CAR RUNNING FINE/STOP AT STORE/GET BACK IN CAR. ENGINE CHECK LIGHT STARTS BLINKING, AND CAR IS SHAKING/ DROVE HOME/CALLED MECHANIC/ DROVE TO MECHANIC/CONFIRMED BLOWN ENGINE HEAD GASKET/ RETURNED HOME/ PARKED CAR SINCE AUGUST. FORD WONT HELP/ CALLED CUST SERVICE AND BEEN TO SEVERAL DEALERS/ALL SAID THAT IT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM BUT WON;T FIXED IT/1ST FORD OWNED/LAST FORD OWNED/TRYING TO FIND OUT HOW TO HAVE THE GASKET FIXED BY THE MANUFACTURER/ HEAD GASKETS SHOULDN'T GO AT 60,000 MILES. CONSUMER REPORTS MAG (10-99) ISSUE SAYS THERE ARE HIDDEN WARRANTIES ON THIS PROBLEM /FORD STILL WON;T HELP/ANY HELP OR INFO WOULD BE APPRECIATED THANK YOU. *AK
WE HAVE HAD THE SAME DEFECTS/REPAIRS THAT MOST OF THE OTHER WINDSTAR OWNERS HAVE HAD. FORD MOTOR COMPANY WILL NOT ASSIST IN HELPING TO PAY FOR THESE REPAIRS. WE FEEL THAT FORD MOTOR COMPANY KNOWS THAT THESE PROBLEMS ARE BECAUSE OF THEIR DESIGN FLAWS, BUT THEY ARE NOT STANDING BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. OUR MOST EXPENSIVE REPAIR HAS BEEN THE ENGINE WHICH NEEDED TO BE REBUILT. PER THE FORD DEALERS, AND OTHER SOURCES, THIS IS DUE TO ENGINE COOLANT LEAKING INTO THE ENGINES, AND HAS BEEN OCCURRING APPROX. 10,000- 20,000 MILES AFTER THE HEAD GASKETS HAVE BEEN REPLACED.
THE HEAD GASKET FAILED ON MY VAN AT 109K MILES AND I STILL OWED $6,000 ON IT ALTHOUGH THE BLUE BOOK VALUE AT THE TIME WAS $8 - 9,000 DEPENDING ON CONDITION. I TOOK THE VAN TO SHARP FORD IN INDIANAPOLIS AND THEY TOLD ME THE REPAIR WOULD BE $3800. THEY GAVE ME $2500 FOR THE VAN AS IS. THAT DAY I PURCHASED A NEW 99 WINDSTAR AND USED THE $2500 FOR A DOWN PAYMENT. I KNOW ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS LIKE THIS. I TALKED TO FORD SEVERAL TIMES TRYING TO GET COMPENSATION FOR THE FAILURE AND WAS TOLD DIFFERENT THINGS INCLUDING THAT THEY WOULD HAVE REINBURSED ME IF I HAD PAID FOR THE REPAIRS. SINCE I BOUGHT THE VAN USED I SUSPECT THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST BLOWN HEAD GASKET FOR THIS VEHICLE. I THINK FORD SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR DEFECTIVE VEHICLE. I LOST $5,500 ON THAT VAN BECAUSE OF THIS DEFECT. *AK
INTAKE GASKET COVER FAILED SHORTLY AFTER RECALL WORK WAS COMPLETED ON OTHER RECALL GASKET FAILURE. FORD AND DEALER REFUSED REPAIRS WHILE BOTH CONFIRMED THEY HAVE HAD A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH THESE GASKETS. *AK *****DIMS 11 IVOQ ENTRY POSTED AFTER 12/12/02 CUT-OVER TO ARTEMIS------759790.
HEATER CORE FAILURE THAT LED TO IMMEDIATE CYLINDER HEAD CRACKING THAT LED TO COOLANT ENTERING ENGINE OIL SYSTEM AND TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE. TRANSMISSION FAILURE OF ORIGINAL AND REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION. TOLD BY AUTO PARTS STORE EMPLOYEE ABOUT THE CYLINDER HEAD RECALL AS HIS SISTER OWNED SAME 1995 WINDSTAR 3.8L, FORD HAD A VENDOR ANSWERING CALLS. REPRESENTATIVE STATED THAT FORD HAD MAILED RECALL INFORMATION TO THE WRONG ADDRESS, THAT IS WHY I NEVER RECIEVED IT. REP UNABLE TO EXPLAIN HOW FORD MAILED HOOD RECALL INFO TO CORRECT ADDRESS, BUT NOT THE CYLINDER HEAD RECALL INFO. REP REFUSED TO ADDRESS ISSUE FURTHER. I WOULD LOVE TO TAKER PART IN ANY CYLINDER HEAD OR TRANSMISSION CLASS ACTION PROCEEDING.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD THERE WERE FUMES IN THE VAN. COULDN'T CONTINUE DRIVING AND PULLED VEHICLE OVER. CONTACT DEALERSHIP, AND HAD VEHICLE TOWED. WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A LEAK IN INTAKE MANIFOLD WHICH WAS GETTING INTO THE VENT SYSTEM. TOXIC COOLANT FUMES WERE A RESULT OF MANUFACTURERS DEFECTIVE ENGINE GASKETS; FORD MADE NO RECALL NOTICES, BUT WOULD CORRECT GASKET PROBLEMS IF THEY OCCURRED BEFORE 60,000 MILES. *AK
FORWARD CLUTCH PISTON CRACKED ,CAUSING VEHICLE TO BEHAVE LIKE IT WAS IN NEUTRAL. ALSO, WHEN TRANSMISSION WOULD FINALLY KICK IN, VEHICLE WOULD SERGE FORWARD. CLUTCH PISTON WAS REPLACED BY A PRIVATE MECHANIC. THE MANUAFCTURER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. *AK
LEFT STRANDED IN RURAL SOUTH DAKOTA WHEN ENGINE BLEW, RELATING TO THE ENGINE HEAD GASKET PROBLEM ON FORD'S 3.8 LITRE ENGINES. HAD PREVIOUSLY HAD THE HEAD GASKETS CHECKED AND REPLACED, BUT ENGINE STILL DAMAGED. FORD WOULD NOT COVER THIS BECAUSE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED AT 60,000 MILES AND OUR VEHICLE WAS AT 62,000 MILES. WE HAD TO PAY TO HAVE A NEW ENGINE INSTALLED, WERE WITHOUT OUR VEHICLE FOR 8 WEEKS, AND HAD TO DRIVE 10 HOURS BACK TO SD TO GET IT. *AK
CAME OFF OF HIGHWAY AND WHEN I TRIED TO STOP THE BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR. WHEN THE BRAKES WERE DEPRESSED AGAIN THEY WENT TO FLOOR AGAIN, RISKING HITTING CARS WAITING AT STOP LIGHT. I WAS ABLE TO STOP BY PUMPING THE BRAKES, BUT NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, WHEN I PULLED OVER AND OPENED THE HOOD I SAW THE AREA AROUND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTOR ON FIRE. THE BRAKE LINE HAD CORRODED AND LEAKED ON THE CONVERTOR CAUSING THE FIRE AND BURNED A WIRING HARNESS AND DAMAGED THE OXYGEN SENSOR ALSO. THE COST TO ME WAS 483.00 WHICH WAS NOT COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTEE DUE TO RUST BEING THE CAUSE OF FAILURE.
THE HEAD GASKET IN THE ENGINE MALFUNCTIONED CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. NLM
I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED WITH 40,000 MILES ON IT . ONE MONTH AFTER PURCHASE IT STARTED SKIPPING AND HESITATING, BROUGHT IT BACK TO DEALERSHIP WITH 46,000 MILES ON MARCH 25 1997 HAD BLOWN HEAD GASKET. RECEIVED AN "OWNERS NOTIFICATION" ON HEAD GASKET TOOK IT IN TO DEALERSHIP THEY SIGNED OFF STATING NOTHING WRONG. TEN MONTHS LATER ON AUGUST 12TH 1999 BROUGHT INTO DEALERSHIP WITH 96,000 MILES ON IT FOR A TUNE UP AND AGAIN HAD BLOWN HEAD GASKETS. THEY WILL REPAIR AT A COST OF $1200. I DO NOT FEEL THAT I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS TO BE FIXED AS THEIR PARTS HAVE FAILED WITHIN SUCH LITTLE TIME OF "OWNERS NOTIFICATION". WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS MY PROBLEM
CONSUMER BROUGHT VEHICLE IN DEALER TO HAVE RECALL REPAIR (97V-180) REPLACED. HOWEVER, CONSUMER WAS TOLD REPAIRS COULD NOT BE DONE, DUE TO LACK OF PARTS (#97S88). *YC
HAD VEHICLE PARKED IN DRIVEWAY. NOTICED FUEL LEAKING FROM FUEL TANK AREA. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALER. MECHANIC PLACED VEHICLE ON RACK & NOTICED THE LEAK. ALSO THAT THE TANK WAS MADE OF PLASTIC & WAS CRACKED. THE FUEL TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK

WIFE NOTICED CAR JERKING ON INTERSTATE FROM BURKE TO NORFOLK, VA. TOOK CAR TO FREEDOM FORD, WHERE PURCHASED NEW. LINDA CREASON (BLUE TEAM) TOLD WIFE AND ME THAT ENGINE HEAD GASKETS ARE LEAKING. NEED TO REMOVE HEADS AND SEND TO MACHINE SHOP FOR HEAT CHECK OF CRACKS. ESTIMATE = $68 (DIAGNOSIS) + $780 (REPLACE 2 HEAD GASKETS) + $200 (MACHINE SHOP CHECK) + $300 (PLUGS, SENSORS, FLUIDS, ETC) = $1350. MS. CREASON TOLD ME FORD SERVICE PROGRAM 98M01 DOES NOT APPLY BECAUSE CAR PAST 60000 MILES. WHEN I ASKED FOR REGIONAL SERVICE MGR SHE CALLED BACK AND OFFERED: (1) FORD WOULD PAY FIRST $1000 OF REPAIR OR (2) IF I BOUGHT 75000 MILE/6 YEAR POWER TRAIN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR $495 THEN FREEDOM FORD WOULD COVER ALL THE REPAIRS. VEHICLE IN FOR BRAKE SERVICE, DEALER REQUESTED PERMISSION TO REPLACE HEAD GASKETS UNDER FORD EXT. WARR. 98M01, ENGINE FAILED WITHIN 600 MI. OF REPAIR SERVICE, NO INDICATIONS OF PROBLEMS PRIOR TO DEALER VISIT
WHEN PULLING OUT A PARKING SPACE THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATED, INDIATING A MALFUNCTION WITHIN THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM. CONSUMER HAS CONTACTED THE DEALER, DEALER HAS YET TO REPLACE PARTS. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER DETAILS. *AK
ON 12/21/98 (50,795 MILES), OUR WINDSTAR HAD BEEN BUCKING AND BEGAN OVERHEATING. WE HAD THE TRANSMISSION SERVICED, THE THERMOSTAT REPLACED, AND THE COOLANT FLUSHED. ON 12/27/98 WE BEGAN TO EMIT WHITE SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST. THE FOLLOWING DAY IT WAS TOWED TO FORD WHICH REPLACED A BLOWN HEAD GASKET UNDER RECALL. HOWEVER, WE HAD TO REPLACE WITH A RE-BUILT TRANSMISSION AT A COST OF $1,993 SINCE WE WERE OVER 50,000 MILES. A TRANSMISSION LEAK REPAIRED ON 5/17-18/99 (56,866 MILES) UNDER WARRANTY. ON 8/7/99 WE HAD OUR GAS TANK REPLACED AT A COST OF $445 DUE TO WHAT THE TECHNICIAN CALLED A STRESS FRACTURE - AN INHERENT DEFECT.
ENGINE OVERHEATED. AT 82,904 MILES, DEALER REPLACED THERMOSTAT AND HEAD GASKET ON 8/7/99. ON 10/29/99 WITH 86,411 MILES IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, THE ENGINE JUST STALLED ON US75 N. DEALER NOW STATES THAT ENGINE IS BLOWN AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.
FORD AND THE DEALERSHIP WERE NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. FORD TRIED TO MAKE ME HAPPY IN THE END WITH AN ADDITIONAL WARRANTY FOR 24 MONTHS OR 24,000. BUT WOULD NOT PAY FOR REPAIRS. TO SORRY TO BAD THEY SAID. THIS PAST YEAR WE HAD MORE PROBLEMS, IT WAS VERY VERY VERY STRESSFUL AND EXPENSIVE. WE HAD TO CHARGE REPAIRS AND PUT SOME ON HEME EQUITY. THINK OF THE INTEREST $. I WAS SCARED TO DRIVE. I HAVE SINCE SOLD VAN. I WILL STILL PURSUE THIS TO GET BACK $ AND TO TELL OTHERS. NO SAFETY DEFECT LISTED IN SUMMARY. *AK

TRANSMISSION WAS SERVICED EVERY 20K MILES - JUST QUIT
ON AUGUST 4, 1999 MY WIFE RETURNED HOME FROM AN ERRAND, PARKED THE VEHICLE ON THE FLAT SECTION OF OUR DRIVEWAY, PUT THE CAR IN "PARK" TURNED OFF THE IGNITION AND REMOVED THE KEYS FROM THE IGNITION. SHE THEN WENT TO THE BACK LIFTGATE, OPENED IT TO REMOVE SOME ITEMS AND CLOSED THE LIFTGATE, WHICH REQUIRES A FAIR AMOUNT OF FORCE. SHE THEN WENT INTO THE HOUSE TO PUT AWAY THE ITEMS AND GET READY TO LEAVE AGAIN. DURING THIS TIME 2 OF OUR CHILDREN, PLUS A FRIEND OF ONE OF MY CHILDREN, GOT INTO THE BACK SEATS OF THE VEHICLE TO GET READY TO LEAVE WITH MY WIFE. THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY BEGAN TO ROLL FORWARD OFF THE FLAT DRIVEWAY, BEYOND WHICH IS A DOWNWARD SLOPING SIDE YARD. THE CAR ROLLED DOWNHILL APPROX 80 FEET AND HIT A TREE. BOTH AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AND THE FRONT END SUSTAINED MAJOR DAMAGE. THE EXACT COST OF THE REPAIRS IS STILL NOT DETERMINED - THE CAR MAY BE TOTALLED. I HAVE HEARD ANTECDOTAL STORIES OF FORD TRANSMISSIONS JUMPING INTO GEAR, BUT I AM VERY CONCERNED IF MY VEHICLE IS NOT TOTALLED THAT I WILL HAVE TO TAKE BACK A DEFECTIVE VEHICLE. MY INSURANCE COMPANY INFORMS ME THEY ARE CONCERNED ONLY WITH COLLISION DAMAGE, NOT WITH A POTENTIALLY DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION. HOW SHOULD I PROCEED AFTER SUBMITTING THIS NOTICE?

MY MECHANIC TELLS ME THIS IS HIS 28TH HEAD GASKET REPAIR TO A FORD CAR THIS YEAR SO FAR. I CONTACTED MY DEALER'S SERV. DEPT. AND THEY TELL ME THERE WAS A RECALL IN 1998 FOR THIS PROBLEM FOR MY TYPE OF CAR. I DID NOT GET A NOTICE. I CALLED FORD'S 800# AND THEY TELL ME THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO.
PE99-025/FUEL TANK CRACKS: WHENEVER FUEL IS PUT INTO THE VEHICLE FUEL WOULD LEAK FROM THE BOTTON OF THE FUEL TANK; LEAKS WOULD CONTINUE UNTIL THE LEVEL WAS BENEATH THE CRACKED AREA. *AK

REPLACED HEAD GASKET LESS THAN ONE WEEK AGO. REPLACED OXYGEN SENSORS SAME DAY OF FAILURE. ON HIGHWAY HEADED FOR VACATION ENGINE DIED AND LOSS ALL POWER. HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED FROM THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE TWO CHILDERN AND A PREGANT WIFE - OUT ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE I WAIT FOR A RIDE. MECHANIC SYAS I NOW NEED FULL REBUILD OF THE ENGINE TO REPAIR DAMAGED BEARINGS AND RODS FORM THE BLOWN HEAD GASKET. UTHIS WILL COST ME $2,500 IN ADDITION TO THE 1,300 I HAVE ALREADY SPENT. I WILL LOSE THE USE OF THE VEHICLE FOR ANOTHER 10 DAYS. FORD HAS DENEID ANY RESPONSIBILITY.
VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A HEAD-ON COLLISION AT A IMPACT OF APPROX. 40-45 MPH AT THE FRONT CORNER OF DRIVER SIDE. THE DEPLOYMENT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG, CAUSED INJURIES TO LEFT EAR. DEALER / MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED AT THIS TIME. *AK

ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON AND WON'T GO OFF, INDICATING THERE IS A LEAKAGE COMING FROM ENGINE HEAD GASKET. ALSO, SPARK PLUGS CAME OFF. *AK
EXPERIENCED COMPLETE AND SUDDENT BRAKE FAILURE DUE TO CORRODED BRAKE LINES.
HEAD GASKET FAILED WITHOUT WARNING OR PREVIOUS PROBLEM (I.E. NO OVERHEATING, NO POOR HEATER OPERATION, ETC.). CAUSED VAN TO START RUNNING VERY ROUGH. ALMOST STALLED IN SEVERAL MID-INTERSECTIONS AFTER STOPPING, WHICH COULD HAVE LED TO REAR-END COLLISION. MANAGED TO MAKE IT SAFELY HOME (LESS THAN 3 MILES). ENGINE TEMPERATURE HAD INCREASED, BUT WAS STILL CLEARLY WITHIN "NORMAL" ZONE OF INDICATOR. TURNED OFF ENGINE AND WAS UNABLE TO RESTART LATER IN THE EVENING. TOWED TO LOCAL SERVICE STATION. THEY DIAGNOSED IT AS A BLOWN HEAD GASKET, ADVISED TAKING IT TO DEALER. DEALER'S "ENGINE PERSON" BOOKED SOLID AND UNABLE TO LOOK AT IT UNTIL 8/10 (TWO WEEKS!). HAD IT TOWED TO ANOTHER DEALER (C&C FORD, HORSHAM, PA) WHICH CONFIRMED BLOWN HEAD GASKET, AND SAID IT HAD A SEIZED ENGINE WHICH WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. ESIMATED COST: $4600. FORD'S "OWNER NOTIFICATION PROGRAM" EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE TO 60,000 MILES, BUT DID NOT ADVISE OWNERS TO BRING IN VANS TO BE CHECKED FOR DEFECTIVE HEAD GASKETS. COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET SHOW THAT THIS IS CLEARLY A MAJOR PRODUCT DEFECT ABOUT WHICH FORD IS AWARE BUT REFUSES TO COMPENSATE OR WARN OWNERS (I.E. OWNERS ARE NOT ADVISED TO HAVE THE HEAD GASKET CHECKED). THIS DEFECT CAN CAUSE SUDDEN LOSS OF ENGINE POWER AND STALLING, WHICH CAN LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT AND/OR SERIOUSLY JEOPARDIZE THE SAFETY OF THE OCCUPANTS.
