THERE IS AN ONGOING ACCERLATION FAILURE AND REVERSE FAILURE. WHEN PUT INTO DRIVE THE VEHICLE DOESNOT ALWAYS PROCEED FORWARD, BUT ACTS AS IF IT IS IN NEUTRAL. THIS OCCURS ABOUT 20% OF THE TIME. WHEN PUT INTO REVERSE ABOUT 70% OF THE TIME IT ACTS AS IF IT IS IN NEUTRAL AND WILL NOT REVERSE. 100% OF THE TIME THE TRANSMISSION CLUNKS INTO GEAR IF IT WILL GO INTO GEAR AT ALL. *AK

THE REARVIEW MIRROR FELL OFF THE WINDSHIELD TWICE. THE FIRST TIME THE MIRROR WAS GLUED BACK ON BY THE OWNER. THE SECOND TIME WINDSHIELD HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE WHEN THE MIRROR FELL OFF THE WINDSHIELD WAS CRACKED. THE WINDSHIELD WAS REPLACED BY THE OWNER. THE PROBLEM WAS REPORTED TO THE MANUFACTURER. *AK
HEAD GASKETS FAILED AT CYLINDERS 3 AND 4. BOTH GASKETS FAILED IN THE SAME LOCATION AND TIME FRAME. THIS POINT TO A DEFECT IN THE GASKETS. AK
WHEN TRYING TO CLOSE THE SLIDING DOOR ON THE SIDE OF VEHICLE, DOOR FELL OFF. NO WARRANTY. DEALER CONTACTED AND UNAWARE OF PROBLEM. REPAIRS DONE AT OWNERS EXPENSE, ORIGINAL PART NO LONGER USED, REPLACED WITH AN UPDATED PART. OWNER WANTS FORD TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY. *AK *ML
ON NOV. 7, 1998 I WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON I-4, JUST NORTH OF ORLANDO FLA. I WAS IN THE LEFT (FAST) LANE, DOING BETWEEN 60 AND 65 MPH. WHEN THE RIGHT (DOOR) REAR VIEW MIRROR BROKE LOOSE OF ITS BACKING AND SAILED BACK INTO TRAFFIC. AS IT SAILED AWAY, IT STRUCK THE RIGHT FRONT DOOR OF MY MINI-VAN IN THREE PLACES, GOUGING THE PAINT DOWN TO BARE METAL. I DID NOT SEE WHERE THIS MIRROR (LENS) CAME TO REST. I LAST SAW IT SAILING ABOUT 3 OR 4 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND INTO THE PATH OF THE VEHICLES FOLLOWING ME. I KNOW THAT IF IT HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE PAINT, GLASS, AND/OR SHEET METAL OF THE VEHICLE IT HIT.
I WAS INFORMED BY RAMP FORD IN NY THAT THE HEAD GASKETS NEEDED REPLACEMENT - THIS WAS DONE NO CHARGE . BUT THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE TIMING CASE COVER GASKET WAS LEAKING AND SHOULD BE REPLACED . I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THIS PART IS COVERED BY A RECALL .
THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCED A PROBLEM WITH FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY. AFTER TURNING VEHICLE OFF, NOTICED THAT HOOD WAS SMOKING AND VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE. THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT BY EXTINGUISHERS. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT CAME TO SCENE, AND SUGGESTED THAT THE FIRE CAME FROM THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN CONTACTED. *AK

THERE IS A GROWING LIST OF '95-'98 WINDSTAR OWNERS EXPERIENCING TRANSMISSION FAILURE. THIS MANIFESTS ITSELF ANYWHERE FROM TRANSMISSION SLIPPAGE TO COMPLETE FAILURE. FORD CONTINUALLY DENIES A COMMON DEFECT THAT WOULD WARRANT A RECALL. IN ADDITION, THESE FAILURES ARE EXPENSIVE, RANGING IN REPAIR BILLS FROM $1500 - $2000.

CAR IS GETTING INCREASINGLY MORE DIFFICULT TO PUT INTO GEAR. LOCKS INTO PARK. HAVE TRIED WORKING BRAKE, TILTING STEERING COLUMN, BUCKLE SEAT BELT, ETC. SEEMS TO LOCK UP IN THE COLUMN. CAN HEAR AN AUDIBLE CLICK WHEN IT FINALLY RELEASES..USUALLY ABOUT 5 TO 10 MINUTES AFTER PLAYING WITH IT. HAVE SEARCHED THE WEB TO SEE IF ANY PRIOR RECALLS ON THIS PROBLEM AS I HAVE MANY FRIENDS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM WITH WINDSTARS. (MILEAGE NOT ORIGINAL...HAD DASH REPLACED BY FORD'S FOR A FAULTY TEMPERATURE GAUGE) APPROXIMATELY 60,000 ORIG MILES.
THE TIMING CHAMBER GASKET HAS FAILED CAUSING COOLANT TO LEAK INTO ENGINE. REPLACEMENT REQUIRES 9-10 HOURS OF LABOR SINCE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE LIFTED. AS FOR THE TRANSMISSION, AFTER CAR WARMS UP, FROM STANDSTILL, ENGINE REVS THEN KICKS INTO GEAR.
HEAD GASKET FAILED CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM, VEHICLE REPAIRED HOWEVER HEAD GASKET FAILED AGAIN CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE AND LEAKAGE, WHICH REQUIRES ENGINE REPLACEMENT.*ET
THIS IS AN ISSUE RELATED TO THE PAST, IS CURRENT FOR ME AND MAY BE IMPORTANT IN THE FUTURE. I BROUGHT MY VAN TO APPLE FORD BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION WAS SHIFTING ERRATICALLY AND BANGING INTO GEAR. THEY 'REPROGRAMMED' IT, I WAS TOLD. IT WAS OK FOR A WEEK OR TWO AND THEN IT STARTED TO 'BUCK OR BUMP' WHEN I CAME TO A STOP. I BROUGHT IT THEN TO MILLER FORD TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT AS MY PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE AT APPLE WAS NOT A GOOD ONE. MILLER TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE SYMPTOM. I TAKE IT BACK. MY WIFE, THE PRIMARY DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE TELLS ME THAT ITS DOING IT AGAIN AND WORSE. SHE REPORTED TO ME THAT IT ACTUALLY 'CHIRPED THE TIRES, UPON STOPPING AND SHE HAD TO HOLD THE BRAKE. I CALLED MILLER AGAIN AND I AM CURRENTLY WAITING FOR AN APPOINTMENT. I DROVE THE CAR MYSELF A FEW TIMES AND WHAT I HAVE DETERMINED IS THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS HANGING UP IN SECOND GEAR AND JUMPS INTO FIRST ON A QUICK STOP. THE LAST TIME I CHECKED IT, IT JUMPED INTO FIRST GEAR SO HARD THE IT PUSHED THE VAN FORWARD. IF I HAD NOT HELD THE BRAKE, I WOULD HAVE HIT THE PERSON IN FRONT OF ME. IT ACTUALLY FELT LIKE THE CAR ACCELERATED. PERHAPS IT FOOLED THE COMPUTER? I AM ASE CERTIFIED AND I KNOW CARS QUITE WELL. PERHAPS THIS IS WHAT CREATED THE AUDI PROBLEM AND NOT THE ACCELERATION OF THE ENGINE? WHAT HAPPENS IS THIS-YOU COME TO A QUICK STOP AND THE VEHICLE COMES TO REST, ABOUT 3-4 SECONDS AFTER THE STOP THE TRANS DOWNSHIFTS AND LUNGES FORWARD. AT A STOP, YOUR FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE. IF YOU STOP THEN RELESE THE BRAKE AND THIS SHIFT OCCURS IT PUSHES THE VEHICLE FORWARD. I AM STILL WAITING FOR AN APPOINTMENT AT MILLER.
WHILE DRIVING AND COMING TO A STOP AND APPYING THE GAS PEDAL, THE VEHICLE JERKED AND TOOK OFF. THE ALUMINUM PISTON WENT BAD, AND THE KENNEDY TRANSMISSION IT WITH A STEEL PISTION, AND THE SHIFTING WASN'T ACTING PROPERLY. *AK
WHEN WARM AND DRIVING, THE TRANSMISSION WILL SHIFT DOWN INTO 2ND GEAR, OR EVEN 1ST GEAR NO MATTER THE SPEED, AND STAY THERE.
WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THIS IS A COOMON PROBLEM.THAT THE ALUMINUM PISTON WAS NOT DESIGNED RIGHT AND IT CRACKS.WHICH CAUSES THE VAN TO BUCK IN NOT SHIFT AS YOU PULL OUT INTO TRAFFIC CUSING THE VAN TO BE A HAZZARD.WE HAVE BEEN TOLD A NEW STEEL PISTON HAS BEEN DESIGN NOT TO CRACK WITH WEAR.IF FORD DESIGNED IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME,I WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM.
VEHICLE FAILS TO START.
WHEN I AM DRIVING THE VAN, IT WILL DOWN SHIFT INTO 2ND GEAR AND I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE IT OUT OF THIS GEAR. THE CAR WILL NEED TO SIT FOR APPROX. 2 HOURS BEFORE I CAN DRIVE IT AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED TO ME AND MY FAMILY ON A HIGHWAY GOING APPROX. 40MPH ON A LIGHTLY SNOWED MASS TURNPIKE WHICH ALMOST CAUSED ME TO LOSE CONTROL SECONDARY TO THE SUDDEN DECREASE IN WHEEL SPEED. THIS IS WHEN I BECAME AFFRAID OF THIS PROBLEM. THE TRANSMISSION ALSO NEUTRALIZES DURING ACCELERATION WHICH HAS ALMOST CAUSED A REAR END COLLISION INTO ME. THE DEALER SAID THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS SO I AM LEFT WITH THIS POTENTIAL HAZARD TO MY FAMILY AND OTHERS. I KNOW OTHERS WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM ALTHOUGH THEY WHERE DISSABLED ON THE ROAD AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED. ALL OF THESE EXAMPLES HAPPENED WITH MILES UNDER 50,000. SOME DAYS I CAN DRIVE THE VAN ON 100 MILE TRIPS AND OTHERS I WILL BE DRIVING FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES AND THE GEAR WILL GET STUCK IN 2ND. I TAKE GOOD CARE OF THIS VAN AND HAVE NON AGGRESSIVE DRIVING HABITS WITH THIS CAR. PLEASE HELP. THIS TRANSMISSION IS DEFECTIVE ON MY 95 WINDSTAR.
8/3/98 OUR '95 WINDSTAR HAD THE HEAD GASKETS REPLACED UNDER FORD'S "EXTENDED WARRANTY" PROGAM. WE HAD HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE MISSING IN THE PAST. ON 10/26/98 THE ENGINE MISSED SEVERAL TIMES, WHILE GOING 70MPH ON AN INTERSTATE, THEN I LOST ENGINE POWER AND HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT STARTED SMOKING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND ANTIFREEZE RAN OUT THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE. WE NURSED IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WERE TOLD THAT A CRANK SHAFT BEARING HAD GONE BAD. THE ONLY REMEDY WAS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE TO THE TUNE OF $3000. WE QUESTIONED THE DEALER'S MECHANIC AT THAT TIME ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS BEING RELATED TO THE RECALL AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO RELATIONSHIP. WE DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY TO DO THE REPAIR UNTIL APRIL. AFTER TALKING MORE WITH THE DEALERSHIP WE DISCOVERED THAT FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAD PAID FOR OTHER ENGINE REPLACEMENTS AFTER HEAD GASKET WORK, BUT BECAUSE OUR DEALER DIDN'T CONTACT THEM PRIOR TO THE DEC '98/JAN '99 EXTENDED WARRANTY EXPIRATION DATE, EVEN THOUGH WE NOTIFIED THE DEALERSHIP, THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE OUR ENGINE. WE FEEL THAT EITHER THE HEAD GASKETS HAD ALREADY LEAKED ENOUGH COOLANT INTO THE ENGINE TO CONTAMINATE THE FLUID AND CAUSE THE BEARING FAILURE PRIOR TO THE HEAD GASKET REPLACEMENT OR THERE WAS FLUID CONTAMINATION DURING THE HEAD GASKET REPLACEMENT. WE FEEL WE HAVE BEEN TREATED UNFAIRLY BY TOWN AND COUNTRY FORD AND FORD MOTOR COMPANY. *AK
TRANSMISSION FAILED (SECOND TIME). FORD DEALER (SAWGRASS FORD OF SUNRISE, FL) CLAIMED IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO INSTALL A 'NEW" TRANSMISSION, ONLY A 'REBUILT' ONE. DEALER WOULD NOT WARRANT REPAIRS (REBUILT TRANSMISSION) FOR MORE THAN 12 MONTHS OR 12,000 MILES. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO AND REPAIRED AT A TRANSMISSION SHOP THAT WOULD GUARANTEE REPAIRS FOR A LONGER PERIOD.
AFTER BRINGING THE VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP TRANSMISSION SEEMED TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL BECAUSE WHEN I TAKE MY FEET OFF THE BRAKE AND PRESSED ON THE ACCELERATOR, ENGINE JUST REVVED AND THE VAN DID NOT MOVE. THEN SUDDENLY THE TRANSMISSION ENGAGED, AND THE VAN JUMPED FORWARD DANGEROUSLY AND ACCELERATED. THIS VEHICLE WAS BOUGHT FROM DI BLASI FORD, 112-21 NORTHERN BLVD., CORONA, NY 11368 (TEL: 718-898-6100). MONTCLAIR-BLOOMFIELD MOTORS IS THE DEALER CLOSEST TO ME AND HAS INSPECTED THE VEHICLE. BOTH DEALER & THE MANUFACTURER CLAIMED THAT THIS WAS AN UNUSUAL PROBLEM, AND THAT I HAD TO PAY $2,000 FOR THE REPAIR BECAUSE I AM PAST THE 3 YEAR STANDARD WARRANTY (ALTHOUGH I AM UNDER 36,000 MILES). AGAIN FORD CLAIMED THIS WAS AN UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE AND NOT A DEFECT. BUT IF ANYONE SHOULD RESEARCH THE VARIOUS INTERNET SITES, IT WOULD BECOME APPARENT THAT WINDSTAR 1995-6 OWNERS HAVE BEEN COMPLAIMING ABOUT THIS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM FOR SOMETIME. OWNERS HAD THEIR TRANSMISSION REPLACED AS MANY AS THREE TIMES FOR VEHICLE WITH LESS THAN 60,000 MILES. ALSO MAJORITY OF THESE OWNERS FELT THAT FORD WAS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, BUT REFUSED TO ADVISE THE PUBLIC, AND WAS PUTTING PROFITS AHEAD OF THEIR CUSTOMERS LIFE. AFTER BEING SUBJECT TO THIS LIFE THREATENING SITUATION, I FELT COMPELLED TO REPORT THIS MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE, HOPING IT COULD SAVE LIFE AND PROPERTY. IN CLOSING, I BEG YOUR INVOLVEMENT TO CURE THIS PROBLEM FOR THE SAKE FOR PUBLIC SAFETY. BOUGHT WINDSTAR LX 3.8 USED 1996, TWO YEARS LATER HEAD GASKET BLEW,. I HAD EXTENDED WARRANTY INSURANCE TO COVE ALL EXPENSES, HOW EVER THE REPLACEMENT HEAD GASKET BLEW THIS WEEK DESTROYING THE ENGINE, FOR TELL ME I AM OUT OF LOOK, BECAUSE I DID MY OWN OIL CHANGES IN THE PAST YEAR, MY VAN HAS NEVER BEEN RECALLED, NOR WAS I NOTIFIED IN MARCH 2000 ABOUT A DEFECTED HEAD GASKET, THE REPLACEMENT GASKET IN 1998 WAS THE DEFECTED GASKET, THE COST TO REPLACE ENGINE ID\S $6000,00. WHILE CLOSING THE SLIDING DOOR IT BROKE OFF, AND IT WAS HOLDING BY A HINGE WHICH CAUSED THE DOOR TO INOPERABLE. *AK SLIDING DOOR DETACHED FROM CAR, DEALER HAD MADE A RECALL REPAIR TO SLIDING DOOR ABOUT 18 MONTHS AGO BUT REPAIR WAS NOT MADE PROPERLY. *YH
TRANSMISSION SLIPPAGE - DEFECT WAS ALUMINUM FORWARD CLUTCH PISTON CRACKED.
WE CURRENTLY ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION,WHEN DRIVING THE OVERDRIVE LIGHT COMES ON AND IT SHIFTS HARD GOING AT ALL SPEEDS INCLUDING ABOUT 30 MPH. IT FEELS AT TIMES THE WHOLE TRANSMISSION IS GOING TO FALL OUT.

THE TRANSMISSION SLIPES OUT OF GEAR WHILE DRIVING AND WILL NOT SHIFT INTO REVERSE AFTER THE ENGINE GETS WARMED UP.
WHILE DRIVING AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTIONED, CAUSING THE GEARS TO BURN OUT. CAUSE UNKNOWN. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMAITON. *AK
THE CONSUMER STATES THERE IS A CRACK IN THE GAS TANK WHICH CAUSES GAS TO LEAK OUT. WHEN PUTTING IN GAS, CONSUMER CAN ONLY PUT IN FIVE DOLLARS WORTH OF GAS BECAUSE THAT'S ALL THE VEHICLE WILL HOLD. ALSO, NO MATTER WHERE CONSUMER PARKS THE VEHICLE GAS WILL LEAK OUT. *AK
FORD IS AWARE THAT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THIS $15.00 PART AND THEY CHOOSE TO SOAK THEIR CUSTOMERS FOR $1,700.00 FOR THEIR DEFECTIVE PART. THE ALUMINUM PISTON IS CRACKING OR SHEARING OFF COUSING THE TRANSMISSION TO FAIL. THIS IS THEIR PART & THEIR PROBLEM TO FIX NOT THE CUSTOMERS!
UPON COMING TO A STOP TRANSMISSION DOES NOT DOWNSHIFT INTO 1ST GEAR. THEN, UPON ACCELERATION TRANSMISSION SLIPS AND VEHICLE DOES NOT MOVE. WHEN TRANSMISSION DOES GRAB VEHICLE JERKS DUE TO INCREASED ENGINE RPMS. PROBLEM IS ENCOUNTERED BY MANY WINDSTAR OWNERS BUT FORD FAILS TO ACKNNOWLEDGE PROBLEMS ARE WIDE SPREAD. MECHANICS SEEM TO KNOW THE PROBLEM IS A CRACKED FORWARD CLUTCH PISTON. THIS IS A VERY SCARY POSITION TO BE IN WHEN MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN THRU TRAFFIC OR WHEN HAVING TRAFFIC APPROACHING FROM THE REAR. FORD HAS AND IS WILLING TO REPLACE MANY TRANSMISSIONS DUE TO THIS PROBLEM BUT DOES NOT FEEL IT IS A SAFTEY ISSUE REQUIRING A RECALL. THANKS AND I HOPE YOU CAN HELP. *AK

IT IS NOW LESS THAN A YEAR LATER AND THE HEAD GASKET ON THE ENGINE WHICH WE HAD INSTALLED,( WHICH WE HAD TO GET A LOAN FOR) HAS FAILED AGAIN. ON TOP OF LAST YEARS COSTS ON A NEW ENGINE, THIS WILL BE AT LEAST ANOTHER $700 . AND NEW ENGINE AGAIN SHOULD IT THROW A ROD AGAIN. THE VEHICLE CAN NOT BE DRIVEN NOW. *AK

THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED USED AND ONLY HAD 35000 MILES ON IT AT TIME OF PURCHASE JUNE 1997. SINCE PURCHASE, IT HAS NEVER SHOWN OVERHEATING. THE HEAD GASKET SHOWED ZERO COMPRESSION AT A SHOP WE TOOL IT IN TO, MEANING IT FAILED. WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO AL PACKER WEST IN ROYAL PALM, FLORIDA TO EFFECT REPAIR. THE REPAIR PERSON IN SERVICE TOLD US THEY WOULD COVER THE REPAIR COST AND ALL INCIDENTAL COSTS. WE HAD TO RENT A SMALL DODGE NEON FOR A 2 WEEK PERIOD, $300.00 BIL. FORD SAYS THEY WILL NOT COVER THE CAR RENTAL. THEY DID COVER THE ENGINE GASKET AND VALVE REPAIR, ALTHOUGH WE WERE TOLD THEY WOULD ALSO COVER ALL INCIDENTALS. AL PACKER WEST TOLD US THAT THE REPAIR PERSON WE HAD DEALT WITH, TONY, WAS NO LONGER WITH THE COMPANY. AL PACKER ORIGINALLY TOLD US THE VAN WOULD BE READY ON TUESDAY OCTOBER 20, BUT IT WAS NOT READY UNTIL THE 22ND OF OCTOBER. SO, THIS INCREASED THE RENTAL CHARGES ON THE DODGE NEON THAT WE HAD TO RENT. AL PACKER WEST OWES US COST OF THE RENTAL CAR, OR A PORTION THEREOF, BASED ON OUR UNDERSTANDING ON THE TYPE OF REPAIR THAT WAS DONE.
