THE 1998 FORD WINDSTAR 3.8L V-6 ENGINE'S HEAD GASKET LEAKED ON OUR WINDSTAR AND THE COOLANT CONTAMINATED THE ENGINE OIL, WHICH CREATED ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO EXCESS BEARING WEAR. IN THE LAST 2,000 MILES WE LOST APPROXIMATELY 2 QUARTS OF COOLANT. FORD SAYS IT DOES NOT HAVE A RECALL FOR THE 3.8L HEAD GASKET PROBLEM AND WILL NOT COMPENSATE US FOR THE COSTS OF INSTALLING A NEW FQR 3.8L ENGINE. THE NEW FQR ENGINE ONLY HAS A 24 MONTH/24,000 MILE WARRANTY, WHICH MAY FAIL AGAIN AFTER THE 2YEAR/24,000 MILE AND THE CUSTOMER IS TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF AGAIN! FORD IS AWARE OF THE 3.8L ENGINE HEAD GASKET PROBLEM AND HAS HAD THE PROBLEM SINCE 1988 MODEL YEAR. FORD HAS ISSUED TWO ONPS (OWNER NOTIFICATION PROGRAM) 98M01 WHICH EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR 5YEARS/60,000 THROUGH 1995 MODEL YEARS, AND THE 00M09 WHICH EXTENDED THE 98M01 WARRANTY TO 7YEARS/100,000. I HAVE CHECKED THE NHTSA COMPLAINT DATABASE AND FOUND THEY ARE STILL HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE 3.8L HEAD GASKETS THROUGH THE 1999 WINDSTARS, MUSTANGS, SABLES, TAURUS, LINCOLN CONTINENTALS, AND COUGARS. MANY OF THESE VEHICLES ARE HAVING THE PROBLEM AS EARLY 18,000 TO 36,000 MILES BUT THE BULK ARE HAVING THE PROBLEMS IN EXCESS OF 3YEARS/36,000 AND THE CUSTOMER IS STUCK WITH A HUGE REPAIR BILL, OF $4,000 TO $6,000 DOLLARS. FORD CLAIMS THEY CORRECTED THE PROBLEM AFTER THE 1995 MODEL YEAR WITH NEW HEAD GASKETS EVEN THOUGH IT IS OBVIOUS THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED. FORD HAS SOLD AND STILL MAY BE SELLING A PRODUCT THAT IS DEFECTIVE THAT COULD LEAD TO CREATING ACCIDENTS WITH MULTIPLE FATALITIES. FORD HAS ADMITTED TO THE FACT THAT THE 3.8L HEAD GASKETS SHOULD NOT FAIL BEFORE 7 YEARS/100,000 MILES FOR VEHICLES MANUFACTURED THROUGH 1995 WITH THE 00M09 OWNER NOTIFICATION PROGRAM. FORD IS STILL HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE 3.8L HEAD GASKETS FAILING THROUGH THE 1999 MODEL YEAR! WHY AREN'T THEY TAKING CARE OF THESE PROBLEMS. WHY HASN'T THE GOVERNMENT (NHTSA) INVESTIGATED THIS AND PERMIT FORD TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CONSUMER?*AK
TRANSMISSION WAS REBUILT/REMANUFACTURED. ATTENDING SERVICE TECHNICIAN INDICATES THAT ,ALTHOUGH IT MAY HAVE COME FROM FACTORY IN THIS CONDITION, IT LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE CONSIDERED PUTTING IN A TRANSMISSION COOLER, STARTED DRILLING A HOLE FOR A PLUG, AND CHANGED THEIR MIND WITHOUT COMPLETING THE JOB. THIS WEAK SPOT FAILED, SPEWING TRANSMISSION FLUID, AND CAUSING TRANSMISSION FAILURE. WE BELIEVE THIS IS A CLEAR-CUT INSTANCE OF DEFECTIVE MATERIALS/WORKMANSHIP.*AK
PURCHASED TIRE FROM T & T TIRE ON 6/23/2000. TIRE SEPARATION AT 75 MPH. STORE SOLD TIRE TO ME AS NEW WHEN IT WAS 9 YEARS OLD. MICHELIN IS WORKING WITH ME ON IT BUT STORE OWNER DOESN'T SEEM TO FEEL THAT HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGE DONE TO VEHICLE AND FUTURE DEBTS TO BE ASSESSED TO GET BODY DAMAGE REPAIRED. DO NOT FEEL THIS IS RIGHT AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE CHANGES MADE TO HOLD THE STORE OWNER LIABLE FOR ALL DAMAGES WHEN KNOWINGLY SELL A TIRE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM STOCK. *AK (DOT NUMBER: 1991 TIRESIZE: P215/70R15)
THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD TWO ENGINES, TRANSMISSION WORK AND A LOT OF SMALLER PROBLEMS. RIGHT NOW IT IS HAVING THE DRIVERS SEAT TRACK AND ADJUSTERS REPLACED. WOULD LIKE TO BE PART OF A CLASS ACTION SUIT. THE WINDSTAR MAY BE SAFE, BUT IT ISN'T RELIABLE.*AK
ALTHOUGH THERE HAVE NEVER BEEN ANY ACCIDENTS OR INJURIES, WE FEAR THERE IS A GOOD POSSIBILITY FOR A REAR-END COLLISION. INTERMITTENTLY, THE VEHICLE DOES NOT REACT WHEN DEPRESSING ON THE ACCELERATOR, THE ENGINE DOES NOT RACE. THEN, THE VEHICLE LURCHES FORWARD, ALMOST AS IF THE CLUTCH WAS RELEASED QUICKLY. AFTER EACH OCCURRENCE, WE HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO A REPAIR SHOP. TO DATE, THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DETECT THE PROBLEM. *AK
SOME TYPE OF COMPUTER CHIP FAILED THAT ENABLE THE VEHICLE TO SHIFT GEARS. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP AND WAS REPAIRED AT NO COST TO ME. WE WERE TOLD BY THE SERVICE ADVISOR THAT A RECALL WAS DONE ON THE PART. HOWEVER I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED, THE AMOUNT OF THE REPAIR WAS UNKNOWN. NOW THE PAINT IS FALLING OFF & RUSTING EVERYWHERE! STARTED TO RUST ON TOP OF THE VAN ROOF THEN PAINT STARTED "CHIPPING" ON THE ROOF SIDE, WAS SMALL AT FIRST THEN ONE DAY WE HAD A LOT OF RAIN AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN AT THE END OF THE DAY I NOTICED A LOT MORE PAINT MISSING. I TAKE EXCELLENT CARE OF MY VEHICLE AND THIS IS NOT USUAL FOR ANY OF MY CARS.

WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED VEHICLE WILL START TO LOSE STEERING, AND CONSUMER CAN NOT CONTROL VEHICLE. CONTACTED DEALER. *AK
3 OF MY 4 TIRES SEPARATED DUE TO A FACTORY DEFECT - THE BELTS SEPARATED, CAUSING THEM TO BE UNSAFE ENOUGH NOT TO PASS VIRGINIA STATE INSPECTION. THE TREAD WEAR ON ALL OF THEM WAS 67%. MY FAILED TIRES CAUSED ME TO HAVE TO BUY 4 BRAND NEW TIRES, EVEN THOUGH THE PROBLEM WAS A FACTORY DEFECT. WE DID NOT GET INTO AN ACCIDENT - YET. THE ABS WARNING LIGHT REMAINS ON WHILE DRIVING. I HAD THE SYSTEM CHECKED BY A MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THE ABS SENSOR WAS DETECTING A CRACK IN A COMPONENT USED BY THE ABS SYSTEM. I INDICATED THAT THIS WAS THE RESULT OF A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND NOT WEAR AND TEAR. THE COSTS OF THE REPAIRS WILL EXCEED $500.00 BECAUSE THE AXLE WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. IN MY OPINION THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. LIKE OTHERS THAT HAVE SUBMITTED SIMILAR COMPLAINTS TO YOUR SITE, I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE PRIMARILY BECAUSE OF ITS SAFETY FEATURES. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY THE COSTS OF REPAIRS FOR A MANUFACTURING DEFECT ESPECIALLY RELATED TO A SAFETY FEATURE.
CAR STOP/STALL ABRUPTLY, EITHER DRIVING (0-10MPH), WHILE TURNING, OR WAITING AT THE RED LIGHT. ALMOST GOT A TICKET FOR STALLLING IN MID TRAFFIC, AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT.*AK
PROBLEM AREA: WIRING IN GAS TANK-- THE HOSE CLAMP INSIDE GAS TANK HAS RUBBED THROUGH THE WIRES WHICH POWER THE ELECTRIC PUMP. THIS CAUSED TO BLOW THE FUSE FOR THE GAS PUMP. *NOTE-POSSIBLE ELECTRIC ARC INSIDE THE GAS TANK.
DURING OIL CHANGE MECHANIC DISCOVERED CRACKS IN LEFT FRONT AND REAR RIM. PLEASE ADD FURTHER COMMENTS. *AK RIGHT REAR RIM CRACKED AND WAS REPLACED, NOW THE LEFT REAR AND LEFT FRONT ARE CRACKING. *SLC
I HAD A FUSE BLOW ON MY FUEL PUMP.THIS PUMP IS IN THE TANK AND THE TANK WAS FULL.WHEN THE MECHANIC REMOVED THE TANK HE FOUND TWO WIRES WITH THETHE COATINGS BURNT OFF.A PIECEOF ONE WIRE WAS WELDED TO ONE OF THE TUBES.THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A FIRE OR IF THE TANK WASNOT FULL MORE LIKELY AN EXPLOSION.IT IS FUSED WITH 25AMP.I BELIEVE THIS TO BE AVERY DANGEROUS CONDITION .IHAVE THE PUMP ALSO PICTURES OF SAME.PLEASE KEEP ME ADVISED OF YOUR FINDINGS.IF YOU NEED MORE INFO JUST CALL OR E-MAIL.*AK
INTERNAL RACK AND PINION PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING, DIFFICULTY ALIGNING THE VEHICLE, AFTER TWO ALIGNMENT STEERING STILL SQUEALING AND PULLING TO THE LEFT.
THIS VAN IS 3 YEARS OLD. CORROSION MOST LIKELY CAUSED THE PROBLEM WITH STRUT RODS & SWAY BAR LINKS. OBVIOUSLY THIS MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONCERNED WITH QUALITY B/C OF ALL THESE PROBLEMS. THE FORD COMPANY WILL NOT REIMBURSE ME (MY VAN IS NO LONGER COVERED BY FACTORY WARRANTY) UNLESS THEY ISSUE A RECALL ON ANY PARTICULAR PROBLEM. I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY I WOULD HAVE ALL THESE PROBLEMS WITH A VEHICLE THAT WAS LESS THAN 2 YRS OLD WHEN THE PROBLEMS STARTED. MAYBE YOU CAN'T HELP ME, BUT I WANTED TO LODGE A COMPLAINT.*AK
DEFECT HAPPENED WHILE NORMAL BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY. KNOW OF AT LEAST ONE OTHER EXACT INCIDENT WITH ANOTHER WINSTAR IN THIS AREA. NO SAFETY DEFEC TMENTIONED. *AK
WHILE TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH VEHICLE STARTED PULLING TO RIGHT, AND CAME TO A STOP. CONSUMER EXAMINED VEHICLE, AND SAW THAT LEFT REAR TIRE WAS POSITIONED AGAINST BUMPER OF VEHICLE. DEALERSHIP HAS EXAMINED VEHICLE AND DETERMINED THAT REAR AXLE/ TIE ROD BROKE. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/ATTACHMENTS.*AK

WHILE TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH LEFT FRONT WHEEL DISCONNECTED FROM VEHICLE DUE TO ROTOR BOLTS SHEARING OFF. CONSUMER STATED THAT A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR THIS PROBLEM IN CANADA WHEN AFTERMARKET ROTORS WERE PUT ON VEHICLES IN PLACE OF FORD BRAKE ROTORS. I'M HAVING THE ABS CONTROLLER REPALCED WHICH LEFT ME WITH NO BREAKS WHEN IT WENT OUT. THE BUSINESS WHICH IS DOING THE REPAIRS SAID HE HAS REPLACED THIS CONTROLLER ON OTHER WINDSTARS LIKE MINE. I CAN'T BELIVE THAT THE BREAK SYSTEM HAS ALREADY FAILED AFTER 3 YEARS. I LIVE IN NE. WHERE THERE IS NOT AN ECESSIVE AMOUNT OF STOP/GO TRAFFIC. THE ABS SYSTEM WENT OUT OVERNITE. ONE DAY ITS GOOD, NEXT DAY NO BRAKES WHAT IF I WERE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WHEN THIS PART DECIDED TO GO OUT? I FEEL THAT THE BRAKES SHOULD LAST MORE THAN 3 YEARS AND MAYBE ONLY NEED SHOES IN HEAVY CONDITIONS, NOT TO HAVE MAIN COMPONENTS GO OUT !!!!*AK

WHILE PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, THE FRONT RIGHT SPRING BROKE. HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED TO REPAIR SHOP. I WAS TOLD I NEEDED TO REPLACE COIL SPRINGS ON BOTH FRONT SIDES. REPAIR COULD NOT BE MADE ON SAME DAY BECASUE FORD IS THE ONLY MANUFACTURER OF THE SPRING AND NO ONE IN TOWN HAD THE REPLACEMENT SPRINGS. I HAD TO RENT A CAR FOR THE WEEKEND.*AK
WHILE VEHICLE IS IN OPERATION AND MAKING ANY TYPE OF TURN, THERE IS A LOUD "METAL TO METAL" SOUND COMING FROM FRONT OF VEHICLE. A PRIVATE MECHANIC HAS REPLACED TIE ROD IN AN EFFORT TO REPAIR PROBLEM. *AK *JB
WHEN DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60 MPH THE WINDSTAR SPEEDOMETER DROPPED TO ZERO, THE ENGINE REVVED AND THE CAR LOST FORWARD DRIVE FOR A FEW SECONDS. THIS OCCURS INTERMITTENLY. CROSSROADS LINCOLN-MERCURY REBUILT THE TRANSMISSION ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO AND CHARGED $2400. LAST WEDNESDAY WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60 IT AGAIN LOST POWER AND SEEMED TO BE OUT OF GEAR AGAIN, FOR A FEW SECONDS. IT AGAIN WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD. THIS OCCURRED TWICE MORE IN THE NEXT FEW MINUTES. WE PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AND WERE ABLE TO GET IT TO DRIVE AGAIN. WE RETURNED IT TO CROSSROADS LINCOLN MERCURY LAST THURSDAY. THEY STILL HAVE IT AND SAY IT DOESN'T DO IT WHEN THEY DRIVE IT. THEY HAVE NOT OPENED UP THE TRANSMISSION TO LOOK AT IT AGAIN. THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEM IS THAT SOMETIMES THE INTERIOR LIGHTS DON'T SHUT OFF. THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD STAYS ON. THE CHIMES STAY ON UNDER 15 MPH. THE LOCKS CAN'T BE LOCKED. WHEN THE LOCKS ARE LOCKED WITH THE DOOR LOCK BUTTONS, THEY AUTOMATICALLY UNLOCK.*AK
RIGHT PASSENGER'S SIDE TIRE VEERED TO RIGHT. DEALERSHIP WAS AWARE OF PROBLEM. HAD TIRES REPLACED WITH BRAND NEW ONES. DEALERSHIP CHANGED THE TIRES TO LEFT. *AK
WE HAVE BEEN REPORTING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS TO THE DEALERS, TRANSMISSION SLAMMING INTO GEAR,. THEL TELL ME NOTHING IS WRONG. WE NOW HAVE A COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FAILURE.*AK
VEHICLE WOULD SLIP IN AND OUT OF GEAR WHILE AT A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN (WHILE IN DRIVE GEAR). REQUIRED HIGH RPMS TO ENGAGE CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LURCH FORWARD. TRANSMISSION REPLACED AT OWNER'S COST.*AK
THE VEHICLE WOULD REV UP WHEN THE ACCELERATOR IS APPLIED AND WOULD NOT SHIFT GEARS UNTIL THE ODOMETER AND SPEEDOMETERS BEGAN TO WORK WHICH TAKE ABOUT 5 MILES DRIVE. *YH
TIE ROD ENDS ARE FAILING. DEALERSHIP SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE ADVISED US THIS MODEL WAS DESIGNED WITH NO LUBRICATION FITTINGS; AND THAT FAILURE TYPICALLY OCCURS BETWEEN 50 TO 60 THOUSANDS MILES. I CONSIDER THIS A HAZARD THAT WAS DELIBERATELY DESIGNED INTO THE VEHICLE IN ORDER TO SAVE MONEY AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CONSUMERS SAFETY. *AK
VEHICLE WOULD NOT START, TOOK VEHICLE TO FIRESTONE AND THEY REPLACED THE STARTER. 5 DAYS LATER, VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. FIRESTONE STATED IT WAS THE PIN SWITCH THAT DRAINED THE BATTERY. *AK CONSUMER STATES THAT THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AT 81000 MILES. *SLC

UNEXPECTED CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. LOW MILAGE VEHICLE WITH COMPLETE SERVICE RECORDS AND NO WARNING THREW PISTON ROD DURING NORMAL OPERATION. DEALER ESTIMATES COST TO REPAIR AT $4900. DEALER ESTIMATES DAMAGE DUE TO FAILED HEAD GASKET. ANTIFREEZE LEAK FILLED CYLINDERS. *AK
DRIVER NOTICED A NOISE IN FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WHEN MAKING TURNS. THIS WAS DUE TO FRONT COIL SPRINGS BREAKING. NEEDED NEW COIL SPRINGS. *AK *JB
ON THE 20TH OF MAY I WAS DRIVING THE VAN WHEN IT FELT LIKE IT HESITATED(SLIPPED) AND THEN IT PROCEEDED TO DRIVE NORMALLY. WE WENT HALF A MILE THEN STOPPED THE VAN AND PARKED. ON RETURNING TO THE VAN AND STARTING IT, IT RAN VERY ROUGH(LOUD) AND WOULD NOT GO PAST 30MPH ON OUR WAY HOME. WE PROCEEDED TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP IN THE NEXT WEEK AND FOUND OUT THE TRANSMISSION HAD GONE OUT AT ONLY 35000 MILES. OUR WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED ON 4/16/01. BARELY A MONTH OUT OF WARRANTY AND A POWERTRAIN ITEM HAD FAILED ON US. WE KNOW TWO OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS THAT HAVE OWNED WINDSTAR VANS THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAS GONE OUT WITH LOW MILEAGE. THE DEALERSHIP HAS OFFERED TO REPAIR IT FOR $495. THIS WILL INLCUDE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE POWERTRAIN FOR 75,000 MILES. WE FEEL WITH SUCH LOW MILEAGE, A RECENTLY EXPIRED WARRANTY AND KNOWING OTHER PEOPLE IN OUR FAMILY THAT HAVE DEALT WITH THE SAME THING, THAT FORD SHOULD STAND BEHIND THERE AUTOMOBILE AND REPAIR THIS FREE OF CHARGE. I AM SURE THIS IS A MORE COMMON PROBLEM THAN FORD WANTS TO ADMIT.*AK
CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING 15MPH ON A TWO LANE RAMP AND HEARD SOMETHING POPPED, AND STEERING COLUMN WAS DIFFICULT TO STEER. SHE WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO SHOULDERS, AND NOTICED THAT A COIL SPRING HAD FALLEN OUT AND PUNTCURED RIGHT TIRE. *AK CONSUMER STATES LEFT AND RIGHT FRONT COIL SPRING WAS REPLACED.*JB
THIS VAN HAS ALL THE DEFECTS AND COMPLAINTS LISTED ON THEGOVT. FRONT RIGHT COIL SPRING BROKE WHILE CONSUMER'S DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH. WHEN COIL SPRING BROKE, IT CAUSED FRONT RIGHT TIRE TO BLOWOUT. CONSUMER REPLACED ORIGINAL TIRE WITH A SPARE, RESULTING IN SPARE BEING DESTROYED BECAUSE OF BROKEN COIL SPRING. *AK *JB

PAINT PEELING ON THE VEHICLE. STARTED AT ROOF AND NOW IS PEELING ALL OVER. ALSO THE FRONT SUSPENSION MAKES A BANGING NOISE WHEN TRAVELING ON BUMPY ROADS. HAVE TRIED TO HAVE FIX BUT 2 OR LESS MONTHS IT STARTS AGAIN.
HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT AND ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT BOTH HAD TO BE REPLACED WITH ONLY 40,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THIS FAILURE OCCURRED SUDDENLY AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO HAVE VERY LITTLE BRAKES WHILE DRIVING. AN ACCIDENT WAS NARROWLY AVOIDED. THE COST TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WAS IN EXCESS OF $1,500. *LA

DRIVER'S SIDE COIL SPRING HAD TO BE REPLACED.*AK COIL SPRING BROKE RIPPING THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE AND BENDING THE STRUT AND STRUT MOUNTING PLATE, DEALER WOULD NOT COVER REPAIRS AND FORD SAID THEY HAD NO RECORD OF THE PROBLEM.
