RE: SLIDING DOORS- WILL NOT OPEN RELIABLY SINCE NEW- TROUBLE INTERMITTENT-DEALER LAKELAND FORD REPLACED DOOR SWITCHES WHEN I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO DEMONSTRATE INTERMITTENT CONDITION(NOT EASY)DEALER CONTACTED FORD WHO TOLD THEM THAT THE DOORS WERE DESIGNED TO OPERATE THAT WAY TO CONSERVE BATTERY!(BELIEVE IT) FORD DESIGN ENGINEER SAID THE POWER TO THE OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLES WAS CUT OFF AFTER 30 MINUTES OF NO USE TO CONSERVE THE BATTERY, FURTHER, THAT THEY HAD RECEIVED NO OTHER COMPLAINTS.. THIS IS SIMPLY NOT SO. THE VAN CAN SIT FOR 24 HOURS AND THE DOORS WILL OPEN , MOST OF THE TIME. RE HORN BUTTON: MOST PEOPLE USE THE PALM OR HEEL OF THE HAND TO OPERATE THE HORN. I HAVE HAD THREE CLOSE CALLS BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO SOUND THE HORN TO ALERT OTHER DRIVERS. IT CAN ONLY BE OPERATED BY USING THE THUMB OR INDEX FINGER DIRECTLY OVER THE HORN SYMBOL. THIS CONSTITUTES AN AREA OF SLIGHTLY MORE THAN ONE SQUARE INCH. RE EMISSION CONTROL:ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE MANAGER THIS NOISE IS CAUSED BY ONE OF THE EMISSION CONTROLS UNDER THE HOOD. IT CAUSES A WHIRRING SOUND WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN GEAR AND MAKES A SQUACK LIKE A DUCK WHEN THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF. SERVICE MANAGER SAID THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. HAD IDENTICAL TROUBLE IN '96 WINDSTAR, TURNED OUT TO BE COMPUTER AND TRANSMISSION RELATED.*AK
TREAD SEPERATED FROM TIRE. I HAD DEALER REPLACE ALL 4 TIRES. THIS SIZE SHOULD BE ADDED TO YOUR TIRE WARNING LIST. I AM USING THESE TIRES ON A 1973 DODGE W-200 PICKUP WITH A LARGE CAMPER AT FULL 8,000 LB CAPACITY.( DOT NUMBER: VDXF/WBU/3 TIRE SIZE: 33X12.5R16 )
WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY AT 60 MPH FELT A SHARP JERK TO THE SIDE. ONCE CORRECTED, JERKED AGAIN THE OTHER WAY. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER, AND DEALER STATED THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG. PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES SINCE FIRST INCIDENT. NO ACCIDENTS OR INJURIES HAVE OCCURRED. *AK

SLIDE DOOR REOPENS WHEN CLOSED WITH KEY OR INTERIOR CONTROLS. SLIDE DOOR NOT OPERABLE WITH INTERIOR CONTROLS ( WILL NOT CLOSE AT ALL).
WHILE ACCELERATING AT SPEEDS OF 35 TO 40 THERE IS A KNOCKING PINGING NOISE, TOOK TO DEALER AND THEY REPLACED A VACUUM HOSE. PROBLEM REOCCURED. CONSUMER STATES THERE IS OIL BEING CONSUMPT SOME WHERE IN VEHICLE. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. TS
WHILE DRIVING AT ABOUT 10 TO 25 MPH, IF CONSUMER PUTS ON BRAKES OR SLOWS DOWN, WILL EXPERIENCE A LOUD BANG. CONSUMER SAYS THIS IS A VERY SCARY SOUND. *AK
VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKES ON AND IN PARK, THERE WAS LOUD POPPING NOISE, AND CAR APPARENTLY ENGAGED IN GEAR AND PROCEEDED TO GO OUT OF THE GARAGE, DRAGGING MS DAVIS . CAR WENT SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET AND THEN STOPPED ON AN INCLINE. EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS STILL ON, AND THE INDICATOR SHOWED IN PARK. CONTACTED DEALER, AND DEALER SUGGESTED TO CONTACT MANUFACTURER. *AK
DUE TO THE DESIGN AND LOCATION OF THE BRAKE PEDAL, OCCUPANT WITH A LARGE STANDARD FOOT SIZE CAN PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE GAS PEDAL AT THE SAME TIME, WHICH MAY RESULT IN SUDDEN ACCELERATION. *AK
SAFETY PROBLEM: PASSENGER SIDE REAR POWERED SLIDING DOOR. DRIVE CABLE COVER BECOMES LOOSE AND JAMS IN GUIDE HOLE PREVENTING DOOR FROM OPENING PRESENTING SAFETY PROBLEM TO REAR SEAT PASSENGERS. TOOK OVER TWO WEEKS FOR SERVICING DEALER TO GET PARTS AND IN MEANTIME REAR SEARS WERE UNUSABLE FOR PASSENGERS. *AK
CONSUMER STATES THAT WATER GETS UNDER THE HOOD OF VEHICLE IN RAINY CONDITIONS CAUSING SERPINTINE BELT TO COME OFF. RESULTING IN LOSS OF BRAKES, POWER STEERING, ETC. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. TS
THE GRACO INFANT CAR SEAT/CARRIER, MODEL# 8458 HH, WILL NOT ATTACH SAFELY TO THE CAR SEAT BASE WHEN THE UPPER POSITION SHOULDER STRAP LOCATIONS ARE USED TO SECURE THE INFANT. WHEN THE UPPER SHOULDER STRAP LOCATION SLOTS ARE USED, THE STRAPS ARE JOINED BY A METAL JUNTION TO THE TIGHTENING STRAP, FORMING A "Y". BECAUSE THE SHOULDER STRAPS ARE TOO SHORT, EVEN WHEN USED WITH A SMALL INFANT (<13 LBS) AND WITHOUT BULKY CLOTHING, THIS JUNCTION PIECE AND THE "Y" FORMED BY THE TWO SHOULDER STRAPS AND THE TIGHTENING STRAP INTERFERE WITH THE MAIN LATCH MECHANISM TO THE CAR SEAT BASE. THE RESULT IS THAT THE CAR SEAT CAN APPEAR TO BE LOCATED IN THE SEAT BASE PROPERLY, BUT UNLATCHED. FURTHERMORE, DUE TO THE INTERFERENCE OF THE STRAPS AND THE LATCH MECHANISM, THE SHOULDER STRAPS BECOME DISPLACED TO ONE SIDE OF THE LATCH HOUSING/PROTRUSION UNDERNEATH THE CAR SEAT. THIS RESULTS IN UNEVEN TENSION ON THE SHOULDER STRAPS SECURING THE CHILD IN THE SEAT -- I.E., ONE SHOULDER STRAP IS TIGHT WHILE THE OTHER IS LOOSE. THE MODEL OF THE GRACO INFANT CAR SEAT IS 8458 HH, SERIAL # IS MM0519990643, MANUFACTURE DATE: 05199, SHOULDER STRAPS NUMBER F12217, LOT ID 175191-02, 263630, APR 99 (AS SHOWN ON THE TAG). I CONTACTED GRACO AT THEIR CUSOMTER ASSISTANCE PHONE NUMBER (888 224-6549) ON 10/25/99. THE GRACO REPRESENTATIVE INFORMED ME THAT THEY WERE "AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM" AND THEY BELIEVED THEY WERE "WORKING ON IT" BUT SHE HAD NO INFORMATION ON WHETHER OR NOT A SERVICE/REPLACEMENT PART(S) WOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE AND WHEN GRACO MIGHT HAVE FURTHER INFORMATION REGARDING THIS SAFETY PROBLEM. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE! OUR NEWBORN SON IS APPROXIMATELY 2-1/2 MONTHS OLD, AND THIS PROBLEM HAS RENDERED THE INFANT CAR SEAT UNSAFE AND USELESS. EVEN IF THE CAR SEAT IS USED WITHOUT THE BASE TO AVOID THE LATCH INTERFERENCE PROBLEM, THE STRAPS WILL NOT FIT EVENLY ON THE CHILD AND WILL NOT HAVE ENOUGH LENGTH TO ACCOMMODATE THE CHILD DURING WINTER MONTHS WITH BULKY CLOTHES OR AS HE GETS LARGER!
WHILE DRIVING THE BACK WINDOW SHATTERED TWICE, FELT LIKE AN EXPLOSION. WHEN THIS HAPPENED, GLASS FELL INTO PASSENGER'S COMPARTMENT WHERE THE CHILDREN WERE IN. *AK
CONSUMER WAS DRIVING AT 30 MPH AND HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE HEAD-ON, AND DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG DIDN'T DEPLOY. *AK
TRANSMISSION SHIFTS HARD FROM 1ST GEAR TO 2ND GEAR. TRANSMISSION DOWNSIHFTS HARD TO 1ST GEAR AT TIMES. PROBLEM HAS CONTINUED TO GET WORSE OVER TIME. AT FIRST JUST A LITTLE BUMP FEELING BUT AFTER ABOUT 40,000 MILES GOT WORSE AND NOW AT 150,000 CAR IS NOT DRIVABLE. PROBLEM OCCURS ALMOST ALL THE TIME, 95% OR MORE OF THE SHIFTS. TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN SERVICED WITH FILTER AND FLUID CHANGE EVERY 30, 000 MILES BUT THE PROBLEM DOES NOT GO AWAY. WILL TRY A NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH BUT MAY HAVE TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION IF THAT DOES NOT CLEAR UP THE PROBLEM BECAUSE IT CURRENTLY IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. *TR
MY 1999 FORD WINDSTAR WITH 95000 MILES EXPERIENCED COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FAILURE DUE TO THREE NOW UPDATED PROBLEMS THAT FORD DOES NOT WANT TO RECOGNIZE OR BE RESPONSIBLE FOR. THE FIRST IS A SHUDDER DURING THE 1-2 UPSHIFT CAUSED BY A FAULTY SOLENOID WHICH IS NOW UPDATED IN THE REMAN TRANSMISSION. THE SECOND IS A FAULTY TORQUE CONVERTER THAT WAS ALSO AN UPDATED ITEM AND CAUSES MY VAN TO NOT WANT TO SHIFT AT THE APPROPRIATE TIMES. THE THIRD IS SLIPPING WHICH OCCURS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND IS CAUSED DUE TO A FAULTY CLUTCH PISTON WHICH IS ALSO AN UPDATED ITEM IN ALL REMANUFACTURED TRANSMISSIONS FOR THAT MAKE AND MODEL. FOR IT TO BE A COINCIDENCE THAT ALL THREE CAUSED PREMATURE TRNSMISSION FAILURE AND ALL THREE ALSO TO BE UPDATES IS UNDENIABLE EVIDENCE THAT THE ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION WAS NOT ENGINEERED CORRECTLY OR NOT MANUFACTURED CORRECTLY. THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED OR BE COVERED BY EXTENDED WARRANTY BECAUSE AFTER READING BULLETINS AND SIMILAR COMPLAINTS IT IS CLEAR THAT FORD KNOW ALL ABOUT THIS AND IS TRYING TO JUST COVER IT UP.
CONSUMER HAD PROBLEM WITH TRANSMISSION TWICE. TRANSMISSION WOULDN'T SHIFT DUE TO A CABLE BEING LOOSE, AND DEALER REPLACED TRANSMISSION TWICE. ALSO, DEALERSHIP REPLACED A CABLE ON THE SLIDING DOOR, AND INSTRUMENT PANEL PERFORMS ERRATICALLY. *AK
THE INTERNALLY MOUNTED LATCH LOST ALL (3) SCREWS WHICH FASTEN IT TO THE DOOR CAUSING THE PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR TO FAIL. *YC
LESS THAN TWO MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING OUR VAN WE HAD TO JUMP START IT AND LOST THE CABLE ON THE POWER SLIDING DOOR. SINCE THEN THE CAR'S ENGINE WAS WORKED ON BUT STILL STALLS OUT SOMETIMES.THE TRANSMISSION STILL JERKS IN PARK.(THEY COULDN'T FIND A PROBLEM.) FOR THE POWER SLIDING DOOR, AFTER A NEW CABLE,NUMEROUS ADJUSTINGS,ALIGHNMENTS AND TWO CONTROL MODULES PUT IN. IT STILL WORKS ERATICLEY AND THE DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO SEE A PROBLEM. THE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN, WHEN IT FINALLY OPENS IT WILL NOT SHUT. WHEN IT IS CLOSED IT DOES NOT LATCH AND THE INTERIOR AND DOOR AJAR LIGHTS STAY ON. IT CONSTANTLEY MAKES A RACKET AND POPPING NOISE. ON OCCASION THE DOOR OPENS WHILE DRIVING. I HAVE THREE SMALL CHILDREN AND THIS IS A SAFTEY HAZARD!! WORKING WITH A FORD REP HE STATES THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO BUT TO BRING IT IN "AGAIN" FOR REPAIRS. BUT THEY REALLY CAN'T SEE A PROBLEM. HE DID STATE THAT THEY WOULD GIVE ME 1,500 REBATE TOWARDS ANOTHER VAN OR TRADE IN. I TOLD HIM I WANTED THIS UNSAFE VEHICLE MASHED NO FURTHER OWNERS. HE SAID THAT WOULD NOT HAPPEN. AFTER LOOKING AT YOUR REPORT ON 1999 AND 2000 WINDSTARS AND THE SAME REPEATED PROBLEMS WITH ENGINES AND SLIDING DOORS.THEN COMPARING TO OTHER MAKES OF MINI VANS AND THERE FEW PROBLEMS. I WOULD NOT WANT TO OWN ANOTHER FORD!! I WILL BE SUBMITTING THIS PROBLEM TO THE DISPUTE SETTLEMENT BOARD. I'TS TO BAD FORD DOES NOT STAND BEHIND THERE PRODUCTS.*AK
BOTH REAR SLIDING DOORS HAVE FAILED, DEALER REQUESTED WE DRIVE VEHICLE TO SHOP WITH REAR DOORS OPENED

VEHICLE HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS: 1. STEERING COLUMN OUT OF ALIGNMENT, CAUSING DIFFICULTY IN STEERING; 2. POWER STEERING PUMP MAKING GRINDING SOUNDS WHEN ENGINE IS COLD AND, INTERMITTENTLY, WHEN THE ENGINE GETS HOT; 3. ONGOING PROBLEM WITH WINDSHIELD FOGGING UP AND DEALER IS UNABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLE;. 4. BRAKE PEDAL GOES TO THE FLOOR BEFORE STOPPING, CAUSING EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE; AND 5. A LOUD SOUND COMING FROM THE FRONT OF VEHICLE. SEEKING HELP FROM NHTSA IN THIS MATTER. *AK
UPON DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL TO MAKE A STOP VEHICLE ACCELERATED, RESULTING IN UNWANTED AND UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION. ALSO, SPEEDOMETER AND ODOMETER MALFUNCTION INTERMITENTLY. OWNER BELIEVES A COMPUTER PROBLEM EXISTS. CONSUMER HAS CONTACTED THE DEALER. *AK.ET.
THE PAINT ON THE ROOF IS PEELING OFF AND I HAVE TAKEN IT IN TO THE FORD DEALER A TOTAL THREE TIMES AND IT ONLY LASTS FOR A FEW MONTHS AND STARTS TO PEEL OFF AGAIN. THE FOLLOWING NUMBER IS THE CASE NUMBER FROM FORD MANUFACTURING: TRACKING ID: KMM348947C0KM CASE ID: 101425. NO SAFETY DEFECT. *AK
POWER STEERING HAS BEEN MAKING NOISE FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS. IT IS LOUD ENOUGH THAT OTHERS TURN AND STARE. IN ADDITION, IT NOW SHUDDERS AND GRINDS WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL AT A SLOW SPEED. IT IS NOT AS EASY TO STEER ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT AS HARD AS WITHOUT POWER STEERING. I HAVE BEEN CONTINUALLY TOLD FORD MOTOR IS INVESTIGATING THE PROBLEM BUT IT'S BEEN ALMOST TWO YEARS AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. I'VE HAD SEVERAL SURGERIES ON MY ARM/HAND AND IF I TOTALLY LOSE THE POWER STEERING FUNCTION, I'M NOT SURE I COULD MAINTAIN THE GRIP ON THE WHEEL IF I NEEDED TO DO SOME FAST TURNING. THE DEALER HAS TOLD US THAT THERE ARE MANY WINDSTARS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND THAT FORD DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT. I'VE ALSO BEEN TOLD IF I BUY ANOTHER NEW ONE, I MAY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AS THEY STILL HAVE NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM. WE ARE AT A LOSS AS TO HOW TO DEAL WITH THIS. WHO IN THE WORLD WOULD TAKE A TRADE IN CAR THAT COSTS $31,785 NEW BUT NOW SOUNDS LIKE A PIECE OF JUNK. IF I GO BACK TO THE DEALER AND BUY ANOTHER WINDSTAR, I MAY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ALL OVER AGAIN ACCORDING TO FORD. WE WERE OBVIOUSLY SOLD A DEFECTIVE NEW PRODUCT AND HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET THE PROBLEM CORRECTED FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS TO NO AVAIL. *AKTHE DEALER KEEPS TELLING US FORD IS WORKING ON THE PROBLEM AND WHEN THEY FIGURE IT OUT, THEY'LL FIX OUR CAR. IN THE MEANTIME, THE NOISE AND SHUDDERING/GRINDING ARE DRIVING US CRAZY. THE ONLY ASSISTANCE FORD MOTOR HAS OFFERED IS A $2,000 CUSTOMER APPRECIATION CERTIFICATE GOOD ONLY AT JOE MACHENS FORD FOR ANOTHER FORD PRODUCT. SINCE I HAVE NEED OF A MINI VAN AND THEY ARE TELLING ME THE 2001 OR 2001 WINDSTAR MAY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, I FIND THEIR OFFER INSULTING. I'M VERY CONCERNED, WITH THE NUMBER OF MILES I DRIVE, THAT THE POWER STEERING WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL SINCE IT IS NOT AS EASY AS WHEN WE FIRST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. WITH MY ARMS/HANDS THE WAY THEY ARE, I'M REALLY NOT SURE MY GRASP WOULD ALLOW FOR SWIFT TURNING OF THE WHEEL SHOULD THE NEED ARISE. HELP!! *AK
FRONT PASSENGER 'SSIDE DOOR LATCH BROKE DUE TO THE BOLT THAT WASN'T PUT IN THE DOOR. *AK
REAR AND THE MIDDLE SHOULDER SEAT BELTS GET TIGHT ON THE CONSUMERS WHEN PUTTING THE SEAT BELTS ON. CONSUMER HAVE TO KEEP TAKING THE SEAT BELT OFF AND KEEP PUTTING BACK ON BECAUSE EVERYTIME HE MOVES THE SEAT BELT GETS TIGHTER. *AK
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE REAR AXLE ON THE VEHICLE WAS CRACKED ON THE BOTTOM. THE CONTACT HAD NOT DRIVEN THE VEHICLE SINCE LOCATING THE CRACK IN THE AXLE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED BY A DEALER WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 170,000.

ENGINE RUNAWAY ACCELERATION PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED THREE (3) MORE TIMES SINCE ORIGIONAL REPORT TO FORD DEALER (TOTAL 4 AS OF 09/15/99). PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED THREE (3) TIMES WITH TRANSMISSION IN DRIVE AND ONE (1) TIME IN REVERSE POSITION.
HORN DELAY EQUIVALENT TO A DELAY IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM. UPGRADED BY FORD FROM OUTGARIOUSLY SLOW TO TERRIBLELY SLOW. USELESS IN A PARKING LOT. INEFFECTIVE IN TRAFFIC BECAUSE OF LACK OF TIMELY RESPONSE. A HORN IS A SAFETY DEVICE USED AS WARNING SYSTEM. IT IS INEFFECTIVE BECAUSE IT IS TIME DELAYED EVEN AFTER AN UPGRADE. I GET ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED EVERY TIME I TRY TO USE IT.

VEHICLE EXPERIENCES SUDDEN ACCELERATION ON ITS OWN UP TO 15-20 MPH. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL DOES NOT HAVE TO BE APPLIED. ON OCCASION TRANSMISSION APPEARS TO BE BETWEEN GEARS.. *AK
BOTH REAR SLIDING DOORS ARE NOT STABLE WHEN MOVED TO FULLY OPEN POSITION, ESPECIALLY ON ROADS/DRIVEWAYS WHERE THERE IS A DECLINE. IN FOUR CASES OVER THE PAST TWO WEEKS, THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN OUR DRIVEWAY WITH APPROX. A 15% DECLINE. I OPENED THE DOOR FOR MY SON AND IT "LOCKED" IN THE FULLY OPENED POSITION. HOWEVER, IN ONE INSTANCE HE WAS EXITING THE VEHICLE WHEN THE DOOR CLOSED AND LODGED HIS HEAD BETWEEN THE DOOR AND THE FRAME OF THE VEHILCE. HE WAS NOT SERIOUSLY INJURED. SIMILAR THINGS HAVE HAPPENED OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS.. WE ARE RENTING THE VEHICLE FROM ENTERPRISE. I BELIVE THAT A VERY SERIOUS SITUATION EXISTS AND SHOULD IMMEDIATELY BE INVESIGAGTED. WE HAVE RENTED OTHER MINIVANS IN THE PAST, AND ALL HAVE HAD ACTIVE LOCKING MECHANISMS WHERE THE HANDLE HAD TO BE LIFTED TO CLOSE THE DOOR. THE WINDSTAR RELIES ON A SIMPLE DETENTE WHICH IS NOT SUFFICIENT FOR VEHICLES ON DECLINES. *AK
POWER SLIDE DOOR AFTER BEING LOCKED DOESN'T STAY LOCKED, OPENS WHILE DRIVING, WHILE IN DRIVEWAY AND IN PUBLIC PLACES. *AK *MJ

SLIDING DOOR ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE KEEPS POPPING OPEN. HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING & THE DOOR WOULD CHIME. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 6 TIMES. IT'S VERY HARD TO CLOSE ONCE IT HAS POPPED OPEN. TOOK TO DEALER & WAS INFORMED THE DOOR WORKS JUST FINE. *AK
VEHICLE STALLS DUE TO FUEL SYSTEM VAPOR LOCK FAILURE. THE DEALER HAS SHORTNED THE FILLER HOSE ON THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE STILLS STALLS. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER NOTIFIED. *AK
