GOING OFF THE HONDA BRAND NAME, WE PURCHASED A 1998 HONDA ACCORD IN NOVEMBER OF 2004. AT THE TIME, THE VEHICLE HAD 101,000 MILES ON IT. LESS THAN A WEEK AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE, MY WIFE NOTICED THAT IT HESITATED AND THEN SHIFTED HARD INTO SECOND GEAR. SHE ASLO NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A SEVERE HESITATION WHEN ACCELERATING AFTER SLOWING DOWN FOR A TURN OR WHEN TRYING TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC. THIS CAUSES AN UNSAFE CONDITION OF A VEHICLE TRYING TO GET INTO THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC AND BEING UNABLE TO ACCELERATE; SHE'S ALMOST BEEN HIT SEVERAL TIMES. WE'VE BEEN ON THE PHONE WITH HONDA, AND BEEN TOLD THAT THEY WON'T PAY FOR ANYTHING. I DON'T HAVE AN ESTIMATE YET, BUT, AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH, THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO COST ANYWHERE FROM $2000-4000 TO FIX. IF HONDA CONTINUES TO REFUSE TO REPLACE WHAT IS OBVIOUSLY A DEFECTIVE COMPONENT, I'VE RESOLVED TO DO TWO THINGS: CONTACT A LAWYER AND NEVER WASTE MY MONEY ON ONE OF THEIR VEHICLES AGAIN.
1998 HONDA CIVIC EX COUPE- GREAT CAR EXCEPT FOR THE POWER WINDOWS. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO HAVE THEM PROFESSIONALLY FIXED BECAUSE OF THE COST. THEY HAVE BEEN STUCK IN THE UP POSITION FOR A FEW YEARS NOW. THEY COME OFF TRACK IF I TRY TO ROLL THEM DOWN AND THE GLASS LITERALLY FALLS INTO THE DOOR. *JB
CAR STALLED WHILE DRIVING UNDER NORMAL CONDITION OR HIGHWAYS.NO WARNING,NO ENGINE LIGHT COME ON.I CALL AMERICAN HONDA THEY SAID MY CAR DOES NOT ON RACALL 02V120000.BUT IT IS DOING THAT EXACT THING THE RECALL SAID.*AK
VEHICLE STALLED INADVERTENTLY. AFTER THE VEHICLE SITS FOR 5 MINUTES OR SO IT WILL AGAIN START UP. CONSUMER CONTACTED THE DEALER, WHO COULD NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM, AND CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER, WHO INSISTED THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT ON RECALL DUE TO THE VIN. *AK
AFTER BEING REAR ENDED AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH , THE CONSUMER STRUCK THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HIS VEHICLE AND THE DRIVER SEAT BACK BROKE. THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. *JB
CONSUMER HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR. CONSUMER DROVE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT EXHAUST MANIFOLD PIPE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT ON RECALL, AND THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. CONSUMER HAD TO PAY FOR PARTS AND LABOR. *AK THE CONSUMER STATED THAT HE WANTED TO CANCEL HIS COMPLAINT. HE WAS ADVISED BY HONDA SERVICE MANAGER TO TAKE HIS VEHICLE TO ANY DEALERSHIP FOR AN INSPECTION. DEFECTIVE PART IMMEDIATELY REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. *TC
WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE COLLIDED WITH A HORSE. UPON IMPACT, THE AIR BAGS DID DEPLOY. THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SUSTAINED INJURIES AND WERE TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. *AK *JB
CONSUMER STATED THAT GRANDDAUGHTER BOUGHT A CERTIFIED HONDA CIVIC AND HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLE SINCE SHE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. ONE MONTH AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED THE HEAD GASKET BLEW OUT, AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS WAS DONE BY THE DEALER THAT SOLD HER THE VEHICLE. THEN, POWER STEERING PUMP LEAKED, AND IT WAS REPAIRED 2 MONTHS LATER. IN MAY OF THIS YEAR THE SAME THING HAPPENED POWER STEERING PUMP LEAKED AGAIN. *AK THE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED AGAIN AT 89440 MILES. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED DUE TO SHIFTING PROBLEMS AT 90552 MILES. *NM
WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE DRIVER TRIED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND WAS ABLE TO DO SO. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A BODY SHOP FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AT THIS TIME. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS. *JB
98 HONDA CIVIC DX TRANSMISSION SLIPPAGE MY CAR HAS BEEN HAVING THIS TRANSMISSION SLIPPAGE PROBLEM INTERMITTENTLY FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS. IT RECENTLY STARTED DOING IT FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS STRAIGHT SO I TRIED TO GO ONLINE AND FIND OUT IF THERE WAS SOME TYPE OF SOLUTION. I FOUND OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS IN HONDA ACCORDS/CIVICS/ODYSSEY'S AND EVEN ACURAS. I CALLED HONDA CORP. AND THEIR ONLY RESPONSE WAS YOU'RE NOT ON THE RECALL LIST SO YOU'LL HAVE TO GO TO THE DEALER AND GET IT REPAIRED. I DID THAT AND THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED TO GET A REFURBISHED TRANS AT 5K A POP! THAT'S A RIP OFF. SO I RESEARCHED IT SOME MORE AND FOUND OUT ON ABOUT.COM THAT YOU CAN BASICALLY JUST DRAIN THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND REPLACE IT WITH HONDA ATP FLUID AND REPLACE A PIECE CALLED THE SOLENOID ASSEMBLY AND A WASHER. IF THIS IS THE CASE WHY ISN'T HONDA DOING A GENERAL RECALL AND HAVE EVERYONE PAY A CERTAIN PRICE OR HAVE EVERYONE WITH CERTAIN VIN NUMBERS COME IN AND HAVE THEIR TRANS CHECKED OUT. THIS IS A RIP OFF THROUGH HONDA CORP. THEY'RE TRYING TO MAKE MONEY AND SO ARE THE DEALERSHIPS! *NM
I OWN A 1998 HONDA CIVIC LX, AND THE SRS LIGHT ON. IT COST ME 64.00 TO TELL ME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. THE HONDA DEALERSHIP SAID IF GOES ON AGAIN THEY WILL REPLACE THE COMPUTER CHIP AND WILL COST $500.00 TO $700.00 TO DO THAT. THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT'S CAUSING IT. I WENT ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE WITH HONDA'S WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. IT APPEARS HONDA IS NOT TAKING THE BLAME FOR IT. HOW SAFE IS IT FOR ME TO DRIVE MY CAR WITH KNOWING THE AIRBAGS WON'T GO OFF? I FEEL THIS IS A VERY UNSAFE SITUATION DRIVING MY CAR, KNOWING THE LIGHT CAN BE SET OFF AT ANY TIME, AND THE DEALERSHIP HAS NO IDEA WHAT'S CAUSING THIS? I'M A LITTLE SKEPTICAL ABOUT THE HONDA DEALERSHIP. AFTER READING ALL THE COMPLAINTS, MANY PEOPLE SEEM TO BE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. *LA
PROBLEMS WITH MICHELIN TIRE EQUIPMENT ON 1998 HONDA CIVIC. *MR DURING THE PAST NINE MONTHS, THE CONSUMER HAS EXPERIENCED 6 FLAT TIRES. TWO FLATS HAVE OCCURRED WHILE COMMUTING ON A DANGEROUS HIGHWAY. THE PROBLEM BEGAN WHEN THE CONSUMER PURCHASED A FULL SET OF MICHELIN TIRES. THE COMMON FACTOR OF THE FLATS, STEMMED FROM A CRACKED VALVE STEM, WITH THE CRACK ALWAYS LOCATED NEAR THE BASE OF THE STEM ON THE WHEEL AXLE SIDE. THE VALVE STEMS MAY BE TOO LONG FOR THE RIMS. *SC *JB
POSSIBLE DEFECTIVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. HAS CRACK IN MANIFOLD FOR UNKNOW REASON!. *AK
CONCERNS WITH PLASTIC LENS COVERINGS IN HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY.*MR THE CONSUMER HAS NOTICED THAT THE PLASTIC HEADLIGHT LENSES, ON THE MAJORITY OF AUTOS/TRUCKS PRODUCED SINCE THE 1990'S, ARE BECOMING DISCOLORED/OPAQUE OVER TIME. THE DISCOLORATION SEVERELY REDUCES VISIBILITY. *NM THE CAR WOULD NOT PASS INSPECTION BECAUSE OF THE HEADLIGHTS. *BF *NM
AS THE CONSUMER WAS PULLING AWAY FROM THE INSIDE OF THE GARAGE, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WITH OUT TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL. THE BRAKES WERE NOT FUNCTIONAL AND THE VEHICLE WENT THROUGH THE WALL. FINALLY, THE VEHICLE STOPPED WHEN IT HIT THE WALL. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED. *AK *SC THE CONSUMER STATED THERE WAS AN OPEN RECALL REGARDING THIS ISSUE. *JB
I HAVE A HONDA CIVIC DX 1998, WITH 60000 MILES NOW PRESENTING WITH A FAILED TRANSMISSION. SEVERAL TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THAT VERY SAME COMPLAINT RESULTED IN NO PROBLEMS DETECTED WITH THE TRANSMISSION. THE PROBLEM BEGAN TWO DAYS AFTER THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY EXPIRED. *JB
WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, WITHOUT WARNING THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE DRIVER TRIED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. THE DRIVER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE DRIVER THAT THE TIMING BELT NEEDED REPLACING WHICH WAS NOT MOUNTED PROPERLY. PLEASE FILL IN ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *JB
HONDA, CIVIC LX, 1998, TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. TRANSMISSION REFUSES TO SMOOTHLY OPERATE SOMETIMES WHEN YOU ARE SHIFTING FROM FIRST GEAR OVER TO SECOND TO THIRD, AND TO FOURTH, THE RPMS'S SPEED UP BETWEEN GEARS. SOMETIMES IT WILL GO COMPLETELY OUT OF GEAR. IF I DRIVE VERY CAUTIOUSLY AND CAREFULLY THIS MOST OF THE TIME WILL NOT HAPPEN. IT STARTED HAPPENING A FEW DAYS AFTER BUYING THE CAR. I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN, THAT CHECKED CONSUMER REPORTS AND THOUGHT THIS WAS A RELIABLE CAR. I'M NOW RECEIVING ALL SORTS OF ESTIMATES SUCH AS COMPLETELY REPLACING AT $2500 . ANY GUIDANCE ON THIS MATTER WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THIS IS HAPPENING IN CITY DRIVING, ONLY ONCE ON FREEWAY. THANK YOU.*AK
WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 40-45 MPH VEHICLE WENT OVER A DIP IN THE ROAD. THIS RESULTED IN BOTH FRONTAL AIR BAGS DEPLOYING. DRIVER SUSTAINED HAND BRUISES AND BURNS FROM THE CONTENTS IN THE AIR BAGS AND WHEN IT DEPLOYED. ALSO, AIR BAGS CRACKED THE FRONT WINDSHIELD. VEHICLE FOUND CURRENTLY AT A BODY SHOP. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT 34 MPH A FIRE STARTED IN THE TRUNK OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER MANAGED TO PULL OVER AND HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED. THE DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE CAUSE WAS NOT DETERMINED. *MR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH DRIVER APPLIED THE CRUISE CONTROL AND SET IT ON 55 MPH. HOWEVER, WHEN APPLYING, CRUISE CONTROL VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. DRIVER HAD TO TURN THE KEY OFF IN ORDER TO GET THE VEHICLE TO SLOW TO A STOP. OWNER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER, WHO URGED CONSUMER TO TAKE VEHICLE INTO A DEALERSHIP. THERE MAY OR MAY NOT BE A CHARGE. *AK
WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC CAR WOULD CUT OFF WITH NO WARNING. IGNITION SWITCH WOULD NOT CATCH RIGHT AWAY AND CARS RPM WAS DOWN TO THREE NOTCHES FROM ZERO WHEN IDLING. TOOK CAR TO MECHANIC 3/22/04 AND THEN AGAIN 3/24/04 FOR CAR TO GO ON DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE. DIAGNOSTIC TESTING SHOWED ELECTRICAL PROBLEM COMING FROM DISTRIBUTOR ASSEMBLY. MECHANIC CONTACTED HONDA AND THIS WAS NOT A RECALL. I CONTACTED GEICO FOR CAR TO BE FIXED UNDER MECHANICAL BREAKDOWN THAT IS INCLUDED IN MY POLICY. GEICO CONTACTED MECHANIC CONCERNING ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AND THEN AUTHORIZED FOR CAR TO BE FIXED WHICH TOOK FROM 3/25/04 - 4/1/04. *NM
THERE IS NO SEATBELT EXTENDER AVAILABLE FOR MY HONDA CIVIC--I HAVE BEEN STOPPED AND GIVEN A WARNING--THE NEXT IS A 150.00 TICKET--I HAVE 5 HONDA CARS...I NEED A SEATBELT EXTENDER--SEATBELTS ARE THE LAW IN THIS STATE AND SURROUNDING STATES.
IGNITION KEY INTERLOCK MALFUNCTIONED. AS A RESULT, THE KEYS WERE LOCKED IN THE IGNITION. *AK
1998 HONDA CIVIC EX, ENGINE CUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING. NO ERROR CODES TO RECOVER AND HAPPENS RADOMLY. NEW IGNITION COIL AND MODULE INSTALLED AND CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. FUEL PRESSURE IS GOOD, NEW PLUGS AND WIRES INSTALLED. WILL RESTART ALMOST INSTANTLY.*AK
I HAVE A 1998 HONDO CIVIC WITH 50, 000 MILES. IT HAS RECENTLY DEVELOPED A JERK WHEN SHIFTING FROM GEAR TO GEAR AND FROM GEAR TO GEAR AND ALSO WHEN DOWN SHIFTING. I HAVE CONDUCTED ALL MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDED SERVICES WHICH INCLUDE TRANSMISSION FLUSHES. HOWEVER, EVEN MY PREVENTIVELY MEASURES COULD NOT SAVE THIS OBVIOUS MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT. THE CAR IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY AND HAS NOT BEEN THROUGH ANY ABUSE. THERE ARE OTHER COMPLAINTS OF THIS NATURE INVOLVING THE SAME VEHICLE THROUGHOUT THE INTERNET. PLEASE CONSIDER A RECALL FOR THIS IS AN EXPANSIVE DEFECT THAT HAS COASTED THIS CONSUMER OVER $1000 TO FIX.*AK
IN A SEVERE HEAD-ON CRASH THAT TOTALED MY 1998 HONDA CIVIC EX BOTH THE DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. ACCORDING TO THE POLICE, BODY SHOP AND OTHER WITNESSES ALONG WITH THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT GUIDE PROVIDED WITH THE VEHICLE, THE CRASH FIT THE EXACT DESCRIPTION AND CRITERIA OF ONE WHERE THE AIRBAGS SHOULD DEPLOY. IN INVESTIGATING THIS PROBLEM ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE, I CAME ACROSS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM (DATED OCTOBER 97 - 3 MONTHS BEFORE I LEASED THE CAR) I HAVE ALL DOCUMENTATION FOR THE VEHICLE AND CAN FIND NO REFERENCE TO EITHER THIS RECALL BEING PERFORMED NOR RECEIVING NOTICE OF SAID RECALL. *JB
BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY WHEN THE CONSUMER WAS INVOLVED IN A MAJOR COLLISION. *PH *SC
1998 HONDA CIVIC EX W/ 55,000 MILES. VEHICLE BEGAN SHIFTING HARSHLY @ 53K. BROUGHT TO DEALERSHIP, REPORTED DTC P0730. DEALER RECOMMENDED REPLACING AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FOR OVER $4000. FOUND TSB 00-012 WHICH RECOMMENDED FLUSHING TRANSMISSION & REPLACING LINEAR SOLENOID. FOLLOWED TSB RECOMMENDATION. HELPED FOR 2 DAYS BUT PROBLEM RETURNED. TSB 00-012 SUGGESTED HONDA MIGHT OFFER GOODWILL CONSIDERATION FOR CARS OUT OF WARRANTY. I ASKED DEALER TO SPLIT THE COST WITH ME WHICH I HAVE HEARD HAS WORKED FOR SOME OTHER PEOPLE WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM. THEY REFERRED ME TO CENTRALIZED HONDA CUST SRV WHICH DENIED MY REQUEST. MEANWHILE I HAVE FOUND THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ON SEVERAL TRANSMISSION REBUILDER SITES REGARDING MY TRANSMISSION MODEL (B4RA): "COMMON COMPLAINTS IN THE A4RA, B4RA, AND M4RA TRANSMISSIONS ARE HARSH UPSHIFTS, DOWNSHIFTS AND FORWARD ENGAGEMENTS, WHILE REVERSE ENGAGEMENT IS FINE. THESE PROBLEMS CAN BE CAUSED BY A BROKEN CPC (CLUTCH PRESSURE CONTROL) VALVE SPRING. THE SPRING IS LOCATED IN THE SECONDARY VALVE BODY, AND NOT AVAILABLE FROM HONDA. SONNAX HAS DEVELOPED A REPLACEMENT SPRING 88894 THAT HAS A WIRE DIAMETER LARGER THAN THE OEM DESIGN. THIS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES THE STRESS ON THE SPRING, PREVENTING FUTURE BREAKAGE." TO ME, THIS SUGGESTS THAT THIS MODEL OF HONDA TRANSMISSIONS CONTAINS A FAULTY PART, RESULTING IN MUCH HIGHER THAN NORMAL TRANSMISSION FAILURES. I BELIEVE THAT HONDA SHOULD STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS & EXTEND THE WARRANTY FOR THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS AFFECTED BY THIS PROBLEM & NOT JUST PROVIDE RANDOM GOODWILL ASSISTANCE TO A SELECT FEW WHO COMPLAIN THE LOUDEST. HONDA'S DENIAL THAT THIS IS EVEN A PROBLEM (EVEN THOUGH THERE IS A TSB IDENTIFYING A HUGE GROUP OF POTENTIALLY AFFECTED CARS & TRANSMISSION REBUILDERS HAVE SEEN THE PROBLEM SO OFTEN THAT ANOTHER COMPANY HAS ACTUALLY SEEN FIT TO CREATE A BETTER REPLACEMENT PART) HAS TURNED ME FROM A VIRTUAL HONDA EVANGELIST TO A VERY DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER WHO WOULD BE HARD-PRESSED TO PURCHASE ANOTHER HONDA.*AK
WHILE DRIVING IT WAS HARD FOR CONSUMER TO SHIFT GEARS, AND THE TRANSMISSION INTERMITTENTLY SLIPPED GEARS. THE DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC SIGNAL, IT WOULD HAVE TO BE PLACED IN PARK WHILE WAITING FOR THE SIGNAL TO CHANGE. *SC
FRONT LAP SEAT BELTS DO NOT RETRACT AFTER RELEASING BUCKETS. BELTS HANG LOOSE ALONG SIDE OUTER SEAT AREA DOOR. DEALER NOTIFIED.*AK
ONE WEEK AFTER HAVING CAR INTO DEALER FOR THE 52,500 CHECK UP IT STARTED JERKING VIOLENTLY BETWEEN GEARS AS I ACCELERATED AND DECELERATED. TOOK CAR BACK TO DEALER TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT IT AND WAS TOLD THAT IT NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION.*AK
10 MONTHS AGO I BECAME AWARE OF EXHAUST SMELL INSIDE MY 98 HONDA CIVIC LX VIN-[XXX]. THE PROBLEM WAS WORSE WHEN I IDLED THE CAR FOR A QUICK WARM UP BEFORE DRIVING. *LA THE PROBLEM GOT WORSE AND I WAS GETTING HEADACHES EACH DAY AFTER MY COMMUTE TO WORK. COMPLAINED OF I REMOVED THE HEAT SHIELD FROM THE ENGINE TO INVESTIGATE THE SOURCE OF THE EXHAUST LEAK. I FOUND THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD HAD SPLIT APPROX. ON EACH SIDE OF THE "Y" FOR A TOTAL CRACK OF 6 INCHES. THIS WAS ALLOWING LARGE AMOUNTS OF EXHAUST GAS TO ENTER THE CABIN WHEN USING THE HEATER OR A/C. I WAS INFORMED BY FOUR HONDA DEALERS LOCALLY THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WELL KNOWN AND ALL 7 LOCAL DEALERS HAD MANY MANIFOLDS IN STOCK IN THEIR PARTS DEPARTMENT. THIS WAS AN INDICATION TO ME THAT MANY OF THESE WERE BREAKING AND I WAS FAR FROM ALONE ON THIS ISSUE. THE REPLACEMENT MANIFOLD PART NUMBER IS- 18160-P2E-A12. AT KEN GARFF HONDA IN OGDEN UTAH, I WAS TOLD THAT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WAS IN EFFECT FOR THE PROBLEM FOR 8 YEARS OR 80K MILES. (MY CIVIC HAS 93,000 MILES) THEY STATED THIS WAS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR 96,97 AND 98 HONDA CIVICS TO HAVE. MY CONCERN IS IF I HAD SUFFICIENT EXHAUST GAS IN MY CABIN TO MAKE ME ILL AND THE PROBLEM WAS WIDESPREAD THAT THIS COULD BE A SERIOUS SAFETY / HEALTH ISSUE. A PERSON SITTING IN THEIR CLOSED, IDLING CAR WITH THE AC/HEATER ON THEY COULD POTENTIALLY SUCCUMB TO CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING. WITH THE ABOVE IN MIND, I CONTACTED AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO. CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 800-999-1009 TO RELAY MY INFORMATION AND DISCUSS THE ISSUE. I SPOKE WITH A WOMAN NAMED [XXX] WHO TOLD ME SHE WOULD RECORD MY CONCERN. I AM ALSO CONCERNED THAT WERE NO SYMPTOMS TO ALERT ME TO THE PROBLEM OTHER THAN ODOR. A NON "AUTO SAVVY" PERSON COULD EASILY OVERLOOK THE GRADUALLY WORSENING PROBLEM JUST LIKE I DID UNTIL THEY DIED. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THE SCOPE OF THIS ISSUE FURTHER AND I AM CONVINCED THAT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD ISSUE DUE TO THE FEEDBACK I GOT. THANK YOU. DISTRIBUTOR FAILED WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LOSE ENGINE POWER. I COASTED TO A STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC, UNABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE. *NM
DEALER REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH UNDER RECALL. ALSO THE ALTERNATOR REPLACED . BUT THE INTERMITTENT PROBLEM TO START THE VEHICLE CONTINUED. *AK THERE WAS INTERMITTENT GRINDING NOISE WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED. SINCE THE NOISE DIDN'T OCCUR WHEN THE CONSUMER BOUGHT IT TO THE DEALER, THEY REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. *PH ALSO THE OXYGEN SENSOR WAS REPLACED. *JB
I HAVE A CLUTH PROBLEM WITH MY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS UNUSUAL AT 70,000 MILES. I HAVE SEEN SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON A FEW MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR AND I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG. I NOW WONDER IF THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN AN ERROR.*AK
CONSUMER CALLED COMPLAINING ABOUT HAVING PROBLEMS WITH AIR BAGS NOT DEPLOYING. WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION WHERE THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY.DEALER WAS CONTACTED, AND STATED THAT THEY DID NOT KNOW WHY THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY.*AK
THE FRONT PASSENGER SAFETY BELT DOES NOT ALWAYS SECURELY "LATCH" INTO THE BUCKLE. WITHIN THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS, THE SEATBELT HAS "UNLATCHED" WITHOUT WARNING ON THE PERSON SITTING IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. I'VE FIGURED OUT THAT AFTER INSERTING THE SAFETY BELT INTO THE BUCKLE, IT'LL "STAY SECURE" IF I PUSH DOWN ON IT ONE MORE TIME UNTIL I HEAR A SOLID CLICK. I HAVE NOT HAD TO DO THIS IN THE PAST, BUT I AM VERY CONCERNED FOR ANY PASSENGERS THAT MAY BE SEATED IN MY CAR WHILE IN MOTION. THOSE UNAWARE OF THE "DOUBLE CLICK" TRICK (TO GET IT "SAFELY SECURED") ARE DEFINITELY AT THE HIGHEST RISK OF INJURY...THEY ASSUME THAT WHEN THEY INSERT THE SAFETY BELT INTO THE BUCKLE (AND HEAR THE INITIAL CLICK) THEY ARE APPROPRIATELY PROTECTED BY THE SEAT BELT. HOWEVER, SEVERAL PASSENGERS HAVE BEEN ALARMINGLY SURPRISED TO HAVE THEIR SEATBELT "AUTOMATICALLY" UNLATCH ITSELF WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION! ALTHOUGH THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT OCCUR EVERY TIME THE BELT IS INSERTED INTO THE BUCKLE, IT STILL CAUSES ME GREAT CONCERN FOR THE SAFETY OF THOSE SITTING IN THAT FRONT PASSENGER SEAT!*AK
1998 HONDA CIVIC LX WIRING HARNESS RUN UNDER INTAKE MANIFOLD SHORTING OUT DUE TO WIRING INSULATION BEING ABRADED BY THE INTAKE MAINIFOLD. ACCORDING TO HONDA SERVICE TECHNICIAN EVERY TIME THE CAR WAS ACCELERATED THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WOULD CONTACT THE WIRES. HE SAID HE HAD SEEN THIS ON OTHER CARS AS WELL. THIS CONDITION CAUSED THE CAR TO NOT SHIFT, SHIFT ERRATICALLY, OR NOT MOVE AT ALL, AND SPEEDOMETER WAS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY EITHER.*AK

EXHAUST MANIFOLD/CATALYTIC CONVERTER ASSY. IS BADLY CRACKED. MANIFOLD/CONVERTER MAKES NOISE AND EXHAUST CAN BE SMELLED IN PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. MANIFOLD/CONVERTER ASSY. WAS ALREADY REPLACED ONCE AT APPROX. 50,000 MILES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM WAS NOTICED AGAIN AT APPROX. 100,000 MILES. *JB
WHEN THE CONSUMER STARTED THE VEHICLE IT MADE A CLANK NOISE, WHICH WAS DUE TO A PISTON SLAP. *JB
THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON IN MY 1998 HONDA CIVIC. THE DEALER HAS ALREADY REPLACED THE OXYGEN SENSOR ONCE UNDER WARRANTY BUT NOW CLAIMS THAT THE WARRANTY PERIOD IS OVER. THE CAR ONLY HAS 34,000 MILES ON IT, AND THE OXYGEN SENSOR WAS REPLACED ABOUT 13,000 MILES AGO. I HAVE FOUND MANY OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON INTERNET BULLETIN BOARDS.*JB
WHILE TURNING LEFT AT 15 MPH, RED LIGHT RUNNER MOVING AT 40+ MPH HIT THE LEFT DRIVER SIDE OF CAR, TURNING IT COMPLETELY AROUND CAUSING SUBSTANCIAL FRONT END DAMAGE ($5000+). DRIVER AND PASSENGER SUSTAINED SLIGHT INJURIES WHILE NO AIRBAG(S) DEPLOYED.*AK

THE PAINT ON MY 98 CIVIC IS FADING....THERE ARE "WHITE CHALKY PATCHES" ALL OVER THE HOOD. IT LOOKS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE; THE DELAMINATION DEFECT IS QUITE OBVIOUS. SUNLIGHT FADES THE PAINT! *JB

WITHIN FIFTEEN MINUTES OF HAVING NEW REAR TIRES PUT ON MY CAR, I EXPERIENCED A SIDEWALL BLOWOUT ON THE LEFT REAR TIRE WHILE GOING AROUND A LEFT HAND TURN AT ABOUT 40 MPH. THIS CAUSED MY VEHICLE TO SPIN OUT OF CONTROL AND SLAM HEAD FIRST INTO A CONCRETE PILLAR AT THE BASE OF A LIGHT POLE. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY TOTALED AND I SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES. HAD I NOT BEEN WEARING A SEAT BELT I WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. IF I HAD ANYONE IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT THEY WOULD HAVE PROBABLY LOST THEIR LEGS AS THE FLOOR WAS PUSHED UP TO THE SAME LEVEL AS THE SEAT. *JB
