NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2021 Honda CR-V. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
While driving on a highway at approximately 60-65MPH, the vehicle in front of me began to brake. I was a safe distance from the vehicle in front of me. I also started to brake, but allowed the gap between us to close somewhat due to a vehicle following closely behind me. The Honda’s emergency braking system suddenly took over with MAXIMUM braking, causing items in my vehicle to fly around AND the vehicle behind me to nearly rear end me. I had NO control over the braking. My wife screamed at me, thinking that I had slammed my foot on the brakes, but it was beyond my control. I’ve asked my Honda dealer if the system can be adjusted but I was given no help. I understand the emergency braking system’s intended purpose, but the manner that this system has engaged (3 times) is unsafe. It’s not like I wasn’t paying attention, I was, and I was already braking. It’s actually scary the way it locked up. Yes, I know that the brakes didn’t actually lock up, they are antilock brakes, but it was like I was standing on the brake pedal. Have there been similar complaints about this? * The date below, 10/26/2021, is approximately the first time that this happened. It happened two additional times. It pretty scary when it happens.
I was driving and stopped for traffic, however, I was rear ended and resulted in a 4-car pileup. Upon being rear ended and pushed fast toward the car in front and crashing the car in front, the airbags did not deploy. I had a passenger as well. During the accident the driver seatbelt did not lock, however, the passenger one did lock to prevent harm.
I bought the car back at September. After 2 week of commuting to work and back home, I notice a large crack near top edge of passenger side windshield one morning. The cracks then continue spread downward in multiple hairline pattern. Luckily my insurance through Progressive cover the windshield replacement cost with $0 glass deductible. The whole windshield was replaced and the camera system onboard was reprogram by Safelite.
My cars automatic braking system engages when nothing is around. This has happened multiple times. One of these time I recall traveling with my child at a sped of 50-+mph. It was fearful for the both of us. This alone is dangerous, it could become deadly given different weather conditions causing loss of control of the car. I believe this issue will eventually cause someone injury and/or death. During this time my child was recovering from traumatic brain trauma. The dealership is waiting on a part the they feel should repair the issue. The emergency brake light flashed, beeped and slammed on breaks. I believe this is more than a sensor issue I believe it’s an electrical issue. The lights sometimes brighten instead of deeming in on coming traffic, there have been times that the usb port don’t work an then times that they do with the same charger, the windows an sunroof open on it’s on, the volume will max out an not turn down or off, the pixels on the screen become broken up(I have pictures) also when the car is idling the rear exhaust smalls like fumes from spray paint or something similar. I bought the car in May 2021 w/5miles - March 2023 w/about 7,500miles, I’ve had to call roadside assistance 3/4 times. I am a single mom with a young son who suffers from 4 rare diseases. I am unable to run out an get a new car. If these issues fix I’ll be on my own in the next 13 months with unnecessary expenses.
The keyless car was accidently turned off while not in not in park The car started to roll. Yes the car is available for inspection. But based on complaints I have seen online this is how the car was designed. Pedestrian or driver could be rolled over and injured or killed, No it has not been confirmed but after I got home I was easily able to reproduce the rolling with the car turned off while not in park. No. At this point the car nor person has needed police or insurance. The car does offer beeps for warning but the car beeps so much I thought it was the car going by. It is an easy mistake we all know because we have driven cars with keys and can't remove the keys without being in park. I was able to exit the car with my keys. Pedestrians do not watch for rolling cars. Needs to be fixed in this model of car.
I purchased Brand new Honda CRV 2021 from Manhasset dealer in April 2021, since then this happened few times randomly that the trunk would not open completely and it gets stuck few inches up , manually or with foot sensor it would not open right away and we need to close back and try again few times so it opens all the way up, also in August while taking the stuff out from the trunk it start closing on me and my elderly mom and it would not stop , we were about to get injured that day very badly , hardly escaped from the closing trunk , I brought this to attention of Honda dealer during first and 2nd service but as per them trunk closed properly and they would not do anything for this. They said we can not give you new vehicle for this we know you are not lying but sorry we can not help. I did not ask for new vehicle I wanted to fix my car issue only. Till now this is happening, I sent them email request as well for this issue to be fixed but I did not get any response.
The seat belt clips in the back seat that are placed together I feel are backwards. If you look in the backseat behind the driver's seat, that buckle and clip for the middle passengers seat should be flipped around. When utilizing the middle seat belt, it has to go around the seat belt to the left. This to me is a big safety concern as it adds extra pressure to the seatbelt buckling in, should there be an accident. Plus it makes it hard for the person to the left to buckle in their belt because the other seatbelt is in the way. I hope this issue can be fixed and may need to even be a recall.
A complete failure of the braking system occurred while operating the vehicle. This resulted in the vehicle "coasting" to a stop under the laws of physics only. No indicators were present until the time of failure at which point a number of them went off. In the aftermath of the incident, the brake pedal laid flat on the floorboard without the sense of hydraulic pressure present. The brake fluid reservoir was full. Had the vehicle been operating at higher speed, the potential for injury or loss of life is evident. This particular vehicle had under 3,000 miles when the incident occurred. The issue was reproduced by the dealership and has a label that reads "DO NOT DRIVE" on it at the moment.
I bought a 2021 Honda CRV on May 01, 2021. On July 22 and again on July 25 this car just suddenly put on the breaks for no reason. On the second occasion my sister was in the car with me and was slung forward. She has had three heart attacks and has a pace maker and was so upset I feared her heart might fail her. I have had one heart attack and my heart was pounding too. Fortunately there was no car close behind me on either occasion or I would have been rear ended. Now I feel I must drive slowly because of this but that increases the likelihood of someone driving too close behind me and hitting me if the car stops suddenly. I took the car to the dealership but they said there was nothing wrong with it.
Purchased car on July 7,2021. That same day the car did not start when stepped on brake and pushed start button. Happened again on July 8, 2021. called dealer. Took it in on July 9th,2021. They could not duplicate problem. Assured me it was not a problem. Drove to CT on July 10, 2021. Did not start several times during the trip. On July 11th, while returning from CT. a warning light came on dashboard. in Black Letters in a Red Rectangular Box - BRAKE. I called dealer on Monday the 12 and reported this. He said it meant there were cars in the way. The BRAKE IN A BOX occurred 2 more times (8/6 and 8/17). I called dealer who said it was not a problem. I subsequently searched the message on line - it says " BRING YOU CAR TO A DEALER. TO CONTINUE DRIVING COULD WELL BE DANGEROUS!" I left the car with dealer for 9 days, Sept 3, 2021 through September 11, 2020. They said they could not find anything wrong. I continue to have problems starting the car. Often getting a message that says: TO START ENGINE: BRAKE + PUSH

Sept 3 through September 11, 2021. They said they could not find anything wrong. I continue to have problems with starting the car, often getting the message that says TO START ENGINE: BRAKE+PUSH. Which is exactly what I do to start the car. When I picked up the car on September 11 (after 9 days with the dealer) the service manager told me he would contact their regional manager to report the problem to the regional manager. That's the last I heard from him except when I called and he said he had not heard from regional manager yet. I called again and left message but have not heard back. I have also submitted a complaint with HONDA and I have written 3 emails to the VP of Customer Relations. the VP has not responded to me at all. The complaint person contacted the dealer and dealer told him they could not duplicate the problem. After many weeks, complaint person contacted me to let me know this. He has no other recommendations. At this time i am afraid to drive the car and just drive it locally. I have avoided the highway, and any long trips because of my fear that there is something seriously wrong with the car and brakes.
On more than one occasion while driving the touch screen went black couldn’t access my navigation nothing couldn’t get the screen to turn on it wouldn’t do anything. Then it will tell me connect device when my phone is plugged in I’ve changed the cords replaced them with generic apple cords nothing bought apple cord and still nothing, apple car play doesn’t connect says you need to unplug device for car play to work nothing. The sensors are not working like they should there will be nothing around the car will alarm brake then it will automatically brake. I should not have to at to replace the touch screen in my vehicle it’s under warranty well under the miles as well. I work at a car dealership and the touch screen issue is a big problem I get several complaints about the touch screens not working.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that the air bag fault message was displayed. The vehicle was diagnosed and repaired but continued to experience a failure. The contact owns a 2021 Honda CR-V. The contact stated she attempted to start the ignition but was having difficulty and was able to start on the fifth attempt. The contact stated shortly after while driving at 47 mph, when depressing on the brake pedal and the vehicle failed to stop and rear-end another vehicle but continued to accelerate and drive forward over the gully, sidewalk, and shopping center sidewalk/street. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated the vehicle came to a stop on a pile of dirt. The air bags did not deploy. The contact did not sustain any injuries but did seek medical attempt due to her blood pressure was high. A police report was filed. The vehicle was not drivable. The vehicle was towed to a towing lot. The contact called the local dealer and was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repairs as of yet. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 3,000.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would independently downshift without warning. The contact also stated that the failure would occur while the cruise control was activated. In addition, the contact also stated that the lane-keep assist would fail to differentiate between road salt and line marking on the roadway, resulting in inadvertent sudden downshifting. The contact's husband had taken the vehicle to a dealer where their concerns were ignored and no diagnostic test was performed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100. In addition to the above, the lane keep assist cannot distinguish between lines & cracks in the road, which is a big deal in Missouri, and an issue I fight with daily on roads I have no choice to travel on. And it's not downshifting that happens with the lane keep assist-it tries to correct, but the corrections if I don't fight them will either run me into the opposing lane or off the road.

Ever since we purchased the vehicle in 2021, it it has made a loud screeching noise when backing up in humid weather or after rain. Whenever we brought it to the dealer's attention, we were told Honda National is aware of the issue and working on a solution. After 3 years of hearing the same thing, we wrote a letter to Honda National and filed a complaint with the NYS Attorney Generals Office. The Attorney General sent our complaint on to Honda for response. See attached documents for the history.
OIL LEVEL RAISED UP TO ABOVE THE UPPER MARK ON DIP STICK AND SMELL GASOLINE. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN OFF AND SITTING MORE THAN A FEW HOURS ON LEVEL GROUND.
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
THE BRAND NEW CR-V HAD A BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE. THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED UPON COMING TO A RED LIGHT AT AN INTERSECTION. THE VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN. IT DID NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. I APPLIED MORE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO MOVE FORWARD. I HAD TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK IN ORDER TO STOP THE FORWARD MOVEMENT. I THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE OUT OF PARK AND CONTINUED TO APPLY THE BRAKES. HOWEVER, THE BRAKES DID NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO MOVE FORWARD. I PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK AGAIN. DURING THIS TIME, SEVERAL ERROR MESSAGES POPPED UP. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND WAS ABLE TO PULL THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE STILL WOULD NOT BRAKE PROPERLY AND CONTINUED TO MOVE FORWARD AFTER THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK. I THEN RECORDED THE ERROR MESSAGES THAT POPPED UP. SEVERAL ERROR MESSAGES CAME UP: 'BRAKE SYSTEM PROBLEM, TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR PROBLEM, BRAKE HOLD SYSTEM PROBLEM, POWER STEERING SYSTEM (EPS) PROBLEM, VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST (VSA) PROBLEM, HILL START ASSIST PROBLEM, ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL PROBLEM, LANE KEEPING ASSIST PROBLEM, COLLISION MITIGATION SYSTEM PROBLEM, ROAD DEPARTURE MITIGATION SYSTEM PROBLEM'.
BLUETOOTH AUDIO BACKGROUND NOISE. I JUST PURCHASED A 2021 CR-V ON 16 FEB 2021. I TRADED MY 2018 HONDA CR-V IN FOR THIS NEW VEHICLE. THE ENTIRE TIME I OWNED THE 2018 CR-V, ANYONE I CALLED COMPLAINED OF THE BACKGROUND NOISE WHEN USING THE BLUETOOTH/HANDSFREE SYSTEM. THE BACKGROUND NOISE WOULD INSTANTLY GO AWAY WHEN DISCONNECTING FROM THE HONDA SYSTEM AND USING THE PHONES INTERNAL SPEAKERS. THE DEALERSHIPS REPLACED THE MICROPHONE, THE ISSUE REMAINED! NOW WITH THE 2021 CR-V AGAIN THE ISSUE WITH THE BLUETOOTH/HANDSFREE IS PRESENT. WHY HAS THIS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED WITH HONDA? THIS OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS MOVING, PARKED, HIGHWAY OR CITY STREETS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2021 HONDA CR-V. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP CONTINUED RUNNING AFTER THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN SHIFTED INTO PARK AND TURNED OFF. THE CONTACT HAD TO RESTART AND SHUT-OFF THE VEHICLE A SECOND-TIME FOR THE FUEL PUMP TO STOP RUNNING. ON ONE OCCASION THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS STILL RUNNING A FEW HOURS AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF. THE CONTACT CONTACTED BIANCHI HONDA (8430 PEACH ST, ERIE, PA 16509, (814) 868-9678) AND NOTIFIED THE DEALER OF THE FAILURE HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120. *BF
THIS VEHICLE CAN NOT WARM UP THE CABIN DURING IDLING. IT WARMS UP ONLY WHEN THE VEHICLE IS MOVING.
Safety defect in my 2021 Honda CRV. Until 11/23/2025 the rearview camera had perfect view. 11/24/2025, camera view became obstructed by the camera Lense black rim in the permanent housing. On 11/28/2025 saw my local mechanic. Told after visual inspection that the lense had slipped down in the housing. This would have to be repaired by Honda. Appt.11 AM on 12/18/2025 at Crown Honda Pinellas Park Fl. I viewed Honda manual for 2021 Honda CRV camera problems. Had to be taken to a Honda dealership for repair. Honda forums, and Honda repair technician blogs stated backup camera lense is a defect, has to be repaired by Honda. At Crown Honda on 12/18/2025 at 10:45 AM, I was checked in by a manager. This guy ran the outside car take in. He looked at the problem in driveway. After 15 min, I was told its “Normal” he said “I looked at the same year in lot and it looks the same.” I told him the camera lense housing is loose and needs repair,“ no its not” he said. I explained the backup camera lense dropped further since 11/24/2025 and almost resulted in a pedestrian injury twice. Backing out of my drive way and in a shopping center parking lot. Both times from the rear right side of the car, a known blind spot in Honda CRVs. Both times the camera did not see the cross-traffic movement. I insisted a mechanic look at the car. Another shop manager comes and says its normal. I showed both of them the proof it is not normal, my obstructed view is a safety concern. At 12:07 they finally agreed to have mechanic # 971716A look at it. The second manager says “nothing is wrong.” I said, “if an injury occurs which is a result of this obstructed view, I will hold you/him accountable.” I said” check the housing holding the camera” he said “No, and the truth is; not enough people are complaining for Honda to pay for this repair”. I am truly concerned this is a serious safety hazard that can result in injury or death due to an obstructed view of rear camera.
Dear NHTSA, There needs to be an immediate recall on this (VIN#: [XXX] ) 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid Motor Nightmare. Despite proper maintenance and care, the vehicle has experienced persistent problems that stem from known defects. The engine has a fatal flaw with the head gasket. The high compression turbo engine stretches the head bolts, lifts the cylinder head just enough to blow the gasket causing coolant to leak into the cylinders and mix with the oil and destroys the bearings. Along with oil dilution where gas washes pass the piston rings. This is a widespread problem affecting this model as indicated by the numerous technical service bulletins. The issue appears to occur during the 20,000 to 30,000 mile mark where it begins to experienced recurring engine performance issues, misfires, loss of power, and excessive radiator fluid consumption resulting in premature engine wear and sludge buildup. Honda sites have pointed out: "This can happen when the car is frequently idled or driven for short commutes, which can prevent the oil from flowing properly" and my commute is a 3 minute drive and 5 minute to the market. [XXX] "it’s a well documented issue and Honda America is aware of it that they’ve released an article about it for mechanics" One customer wrote "I have a 2021 Honda CRV and the engine had a terrible knock" [XXX] Please do something immediately! Several Mechanics acknowledge these widespread issues, the Lane Manager that advised me to reach out to the manufacturer pointed out that this is a “common issue”, and Your Website highlights that you all have already received similar recall campaigns for the engine oil and gasoline dilution issue that occurs approximate at the 22,500 mileage. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
When driving along a straight stretch of road, the steering sticks and must be jerked or forced to adjust direction of vehicle. The steering makes a clicking noise with minor movements of the steering wheel. The condition is much worse in hot humid weather. We just returned from several months in Florida where the problem was significantly worse. It is also bad on long interstate drives. The problem is just as described on the recall for the 2022 and 2023 Honda CRV's. We have taken it to a Honda dealership for repair -they said it had something to do with the air bag. They were not interested in properly diagnosing the problem because it was not on the recall list.
