NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Honda HR-V. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact's daughter owns a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving 35 MPH, the vehicle shut off unintendedly, and occasionally the vehicle failed to start. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the owner's residence. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case and referred the owner to the dealer for a diagnostic test. The failure mileage was approximately 69,000.
Odometer display malfunction. Periodically, the display will go blank or display incorrectly. It also blinks on and off a lot.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the instrument cluster malfunctioned and displayed a blank screen. During the failure, the driver was unable to view the fuel gauge and speedometer. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent and had occurred immediately after starting the vehicle and while driving. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not contacted regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 45,000.
I was parallel parking and when I put the car in reverse and barely touched the gas it suddenly accelerated into the car behind me. It was so fast it shot backwards like a rock into the car parked behind me. This was not driver error. It is now with an independent mechanic so I do not know at this point if they can reproduce the incident. I did not take it to Honda as I wanted an independent an unbiased report on the car. No warning lights, etc. before hand. The car behind me had somebody sitting in it and he hurt his hand. BUT if there had not been a car parked behind me I would have shot out backwards into a very busy street. Or had somebody been walking behind the car the would have been killed. The body damage to both cars shows that the speed had to be high at impact, and given the small space between cars when one is parallel parking I would have had to put the "pedal to the metal" to cause the kind of damage that was sustained.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. The VIN was not available.
Dash guage cluster randomly stops working. Includes fuel level, odometer, Trip meter, and all extraneous vehicle info. Could result in running out of gas at speed since no info is available
A recall was issued in 2023 for a problem with the fuel pump which can cause a serious accident in the event of a failure. I've received two notices for the recall, however the dealer where I purchased the vehicle has not yet been able to obtain the parts from the manufacturer. I'm very concerned because of the potential consequences of failure of the fuel pump and would like to have the recall remedied as soon as possible.
The dial where the gas milage, temperature and other information is displayed does not come on at all times. The car is started, the display is blank or the radio screen does not work. I sometimes restart the car-up to 3 times to have the dial come on. This has happened a half a dozen times in the last 5 months. the car is parked overnight and this happens when the car is started the next day. the weather has been very cold (30s/40s) or warm temperatures (62/70). I have spoken with two different Honda dealer employees about this issue. They both said that unless this is happening in real time, any Honda dealer could not help me because their testing would not be accurate if they check the car after it happens. I do not know if it is a loose wire, a battery issue or if the digital panel needs to be replaced. I can not get an answer without a paid service call.
A few days ago several lights and warning items came on: Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist Problem, Collision Mitigation System Problem, Road Departure Mitigation Problem, Auto High Beam Problem and the Break System Light is on. I took it to my local Honda dealer- they said the Monocular camera needed replacing and the break hold/emergency parking break switch needed replacing. Then 2 days later my low battery on my fob came on.
Driving on interstate all dashlights came on and then dimmed, car would not accelerate. Stepped on brakes and then car engaged. Also have vibration under gas pedal that can also be felt on floorboard on passenger side. Recently had transmission flushed and shavings were found, technician indicated transmission failure HOWEVER, car gives me no warning lights - this could cause a very bad accident. Incident with dash lights and no accelation was early Jan 24, transmission service was completed on 2/27/24.
I’m very frustrated with Hondas lack of response to the fuel pump recall. Here is what I’ve been told: I called Rusty Wallace Honda in Knox, they told me they can fix my car until earliest November 2024. I called Honda Recall Number- they told me there is nothing they can do at this time. They told me to keep driving it and if something happens to call, but the recall says the call could stall out mid-drive. They also told me they have required all Honda dealers to pull my model from being sold (if this car isn’t safe to sell, why am I driving it?) Rusty Wallace told me they didn’t feel they needed to inspect my car and instead, tried to get me to trade it in and buy a new car (I don’t have a loan and don’t want a new car). I want to feel safe and I drive 35 miles to work one way all highway. The thought of my car stalling is giving me crippling anxiety. Honda is refusing to provide anything to me but to allow me to trade it in. I feel stuck with my car because I tried to go to Subaru to buy a new car with them and they can’t take my car. I don’t want to be stuck with this death machine for 10 months, Honda needs to step up and put me in a rental car.

The contact owned a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact stated while driving 70 mph on cruise control, the contact heard a weird noise and the vehicle decelerated to 0 mph without warning. The vehicle lost power and the contact could not restart the vehicle while sitting in the middle lane of the highway. The check engine and several other warning lights illuminated. While stuck in the middle lane, the contact was rear-ended on the right side by an 18-wheeler and tossed to the left side of the highway crashing into a barricade on the left front side of the vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. The contact sustained injuries to the collar bone, left leg, and upper front teeth and had a blood clot. The contact also suffered emotional distress. The contact was taken to the hospital by ambulance and was treated for the injuries sustained. The vehicle was towed and deemed destroyed. A police report was filed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.

The odometer and other information on that gauge are blank upon starting the car. That includes the fuel gauge, clock, and thermometer. Some fiddling around with the knob eventually brings it back but the total mileage and Trip A mileage are lost (I need them for tax purposes). Today it says "range" where the total mileage should be. The second time it happened, nine months later (today), while driving, the numbers and bars/lines became incomplete. They were moving around a bit. After awhile, they came back. I understand that many other HRV drivers have the same problem and that the fix is expensive. I have had the car for two years and drive 1,000+ miles a year.
2019 HONDA HRV paint began to come off the car at 3 years old. Now the car is 5 years old and the area of concern is growing. The paint is pealing off down to the base of the car structure. This is a safety issue because when it begins to rust, the car parts will fall off. The area around with windshield is pealing decreasing the structural soundness of the car. When it rusts the windshield will not be held in place. Honda USA: Anthony at 800-999-1009. EX: 88024 was contacted and reported that even thought this same make and model car was recalled in 2016-2018 they will not fix the defect they knowingly manufactured. I have had the car inspected by Fisher Honda Colission Center in Boulder, Colorado. They said it is the same paint issue they saw on the cars in 2016-2018. Where Honda did recall the vehicles.
The electrical component on the dash that shows the gas gauge does not work during cold weather or rain mostly. I have looked this up online and many people have the same complaint.
Odometer (trip/fuel/mpg/time display) works intermittently and often has garbled readouts. When it is not working, distance traveled and fuel level is unknown, creating a safety concern. When the display is completely nonfunctional it is unknown when (or if) it will return to functioning.
Car would not turn off. Says vehicles remote keyless start system problem. Won't shut off vehicle motor. Tried for over 10 minutes to turn off vehicle. Had to risk injury by removing battery terminal cable. It's been 2x it has happen. Honda sounds like recalled or extended warranty for 2016-2018 but not 2019.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle jolted forward. The vehicle failed to start. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact called the local dealer and was informed to schedule an appointment for a diagnostic test. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The failure mileage was approximately 55,575.
The speedometer doesn't work in the cold which has happened more than once. This data on the cluster gives data for fuel (miles) amount of fuel in the tank, actual miles driven, percentage of oil… It needs to be addressed as a recall since too many others with the same make and model have this issue…
There has been an issue with the Odometer (trip/fuel/mpg/time display) for my car. There was a factory recall for it and the software had been updated at the end of March or at the beginning of April, 23. However, the same issue has been restarted since last week (around 10/11/23). The odometer (trip/fuel/mpg/time display) is dark when I start my car. After I tapped several times, it was displayed but did not work properly. Also, you can see there is a time display difference between the odometer and the radio. Please see the pictures. Now, the Honda service department wants to charge for the diagnostic fee because the warranty has run out. This is unfair because of the same issue.
- My back windshield spontaneously shattered. - Yes, my safety and the safety of my passenger was put at risk. We were driving on the freeway when the glass spontaneously shattered. IF I had a child in the backseat of the car, they would have been covered in shards of glass. -The problem has been confirmed by the dealer AND by Honda themselves. They issued a Priority/Action notice in May 2023 addressing spontaneously exploding back windshields in 2023 Honda HRV's (my model). There has even been one other person report the SAME issue at my Honda dealership. Honda is not agreeing to repair my back windshield, even though they publicly acknowledged the issue. - There were no prior warnings before the event happened.
The odometer/fuel gauge keeps going out when I’m driving and it’s so scary to not know how much gas I have or how many miles I’ve gone. This has been happening for over a year now.
Since car was new it has surged going up long hills due to fuel pump. Occasionally it would hesitate when pulling out into traffic, causing danger. At 16k miles the fuel pump locked up and left us stranded. After cooling down, the pump worked again well enough for us to get home. This is the same swollen impeller issue affecting around 800k other Honda vehicles of the same make, model, and year in a recall, but the recall does not include our specific VIN. The repair is quoted at the dealership at $1042 for a 1.2 hour repair and an $80 part, according to Honda's own service bulletin (A21-025).
The contact owns a 2019 Honda HR-V The contact stated that the instrument cluster failed to show the fuel mileage or the mileage on the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the instrument cluster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that while attempting to park her vehicle, the vehicle independently accelerated into a tree without warning. The air bags did not deploy upon impact; the contact did not sustain any injuries. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed to a dealer body shop where it remained in their possession. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was also informed that a diagnostic was performed but no defects were found. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 42,000.
I've been stranded at least 5 different times. My fuel pump needs replaced, but with the recall, I won't be able to get it fixed until the Fall 2024. I'm upset because I have to keep worrying about my car for the next 6 months. I've visited the dealership where they couldn't replicate the issues I was having with my car, until after the recall came out and answered the question as to what's wrong with my car. But now I have to wait for 6 months to get it fixed. I shouldn't have to worry about driving my car. I would like a loaner car until the replacement parts come in and my car is fixed. I should not have to pay for this loaner car. I just don't know how Honda expects people to drive a car that may shut down at any time. Please help me.
I started losing my air conditioning on a trip for vacation (7/16). When I got back, I made an appointment for diagnostics. My car at this point is just barely out of warranty. The diagnostics on 8/3 came back that their was a leak in the condenser coil. After doing some searching I saw that there is a warranty extension for other Honda models that fall in the same year my car is in. I called Honda Corp the same day and specifically asked was the condensor coil that is in my car manufactured in the same plant the defective coils were made in and the reply was yes. The dealer filed a good will claim for me and they covered 50% of the coil replacement which i took in for repair on 8/24. Due to the leak, the compressor is bad and they want more money (enough for a down payment) to replace that. The gentleman at the dealer told me this is a known issue but the HRV isn't covered under the extended warranty/recall that was placed for other models. Due to the current problem, I have been told if the compressor locks up, it could cause a belt failure in my car.
I was making a 90 degree right turn and had turned my steering wheel the amount needed to make this turn, however, the car direction did not match the amount the wheel was turned and continued to head towards the oncoming traffic lane. I removed my foot from the gas peddle and noticed that even though the radio was still playing, the screen had gone black. A couple seconds later, the screen came back on and the car jerked into the turn, seemingly finally catching up with the steering wheel. I took the car to my mechanic and the diagnostic scan did not show any codes that matched this issue. My mechanic did note that he looked up the issue and found other reports online of the same thing happening to 2019 HR-Vs after heavy rainfall. My incident occurred 3 days after we had so much rain that flash flooding occurred. Honda corporate directed my to the dealership. The Honda dealer I bought the car (in new condition) from, stated they aren't able to troubleshoot unless the codes are there to show the issue.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact stated while reversing, the back over prevention screen went blank. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V046000 (Back Over Prevention). No additional assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 32,000.
Issues: Sunroof leaks heavily: during the rain and in car washes, into the backseat, which is ruined now from the constant leaking this past winter 2022-23 *Sunroof replaced 3/2023 Continues to leak heavily Weather Strips: Doors lacking weather strips, or the weather strips are so loose and loosely connected, it serves very little purpose, i.e., the seal attaches loosely to widely spread intermittent hooks, these are not attached securely and leak significantly. Brought to Honda: Never repaired Steering: Severe instability when both turning and accelleration!! Very dangerous when making a left hand turn from a stopped position!! This happens daily! Body Parts: Cheaply made, put together incorrectly by the manufacturer Honda in Mexico, e.g., Honda is completely aware of the plethora of body defects, including the sunroof. According to Honda Service Manager Ukiah CA. Brake System: Very poor, I would caution the need to slam on the brakes as they take much to long to engage.
My car computer screen goes black from time to time and therefore the backup camera and radio, etc. won't work. This started the first year I bought it new. The dealer has done two software updates but it still does it from time to time. The last time I took it in for this problem and the warranty had expired, they wanted me to pay either $79 or $179 for a diagnostic so I told them I wasn't doing that. I saw on TV where there is a problem like this for Honda Pilot, Honda Odyssey and Honda Passport. I believe Honda HR-V should be added to this list.
The car randomly decides to slam on it's brakes, it's becoming more frequent as time goes on, the crv and accords of the same year are already recalled due to this issue and I'm sure the hrv will need to be added to this recall.
I'm reporting two issues: 1) The gas gauge (the 3rd circle on instrument panel) keeps going out. Over the 18 months, when starting the car on cold mornings, the gas gauge would show blank, I can't see how much gas I have in the car. After about 10 minutes, the gas gauge information would show up. I initially associated the issue with starting the car in cold weather, but in the last couple of months, the gas gauge will start flickering in & out as I'm driving. These have been on warm days I have been driving at least 30 minutes or more before the issue starts. Nothing unusual happens before the issue starts. The risk part is that you could run out of gas and not know it because you can't see the dial. I asked the dealer to look at the issue when the car was inspected this year and last year and they aren't seeing any error code related to it. 2) The drivers side door lock has on a few occasions been hard to lock from the inside. When I try to push down the lock switch, it is very hard to push and the click sound is very loud with an associated metal grinding sound. It's becomes a risk if I'm not able to lock by car to protect my safety or my possessions.
The car hesitates to start. Its a push to start and the start is slow and takes a minute to actually start. Just wondering if this is an issue w this vehicle itself.
The odometer/fuel gauge (trip/fuel/mpg/time/temp/oil life display) is blank when the car starts. It occasionally goes out while driving. I originally thought it was just in cold weather but it has happened in summer too during extreme heat. The majority of times is when the temperatures are below 40. After a few miles it with flicker and eventually come back on when I reach my destination but if it's in the low 30s it doesnt come on at all. I have had it completely out for 3 days in a row when we had a cold spell. I even park in a garage with the hopes it would help but it does not. I feel not knowing how much fuel I have is a safety concern. I constantly have to top off my tank in cold weather not knowing if it will be out for days at a time. I have done research online into this issue, there are many other 2019 Honda HR-V owners that are having the same issue. In March of 2023 I showed my dealer pictures and videos of the gauge blank and flickering and they were able to get Honda to agree to replace the Meter Assembly at no cost to me when the part came in even though it was out of the warranty period. It has been a year and they still tell me the part has been backordered every time I call. They also told me they believe it stops keeping track of mileage when the gauge goes out.
the panel lights come on out of nowhere, showing the problem is a coil. The coil and the torques are changed but the problem continues. As soon as the lights come on, the car, HR-V, starts making a mistake that doesn't let me drive well. It has already been taken to the dealer on several occasions but they cannot solve the problem.
I was driving on a curved road, going approximately 25mph (safe speed) and a car came around the curve coming towards me (also going a safe speed). We were both on the correct side of the road, no danger of a collision, but the Collision Mitigation Braking System started to brake. Fortunately, there was no one behind me and it only engaged for a second. A message to BRAKE came on just before the CMBS engaged.
Twice I was interstate speed driving and lost speed the first time I thought it was the fuel system. The car was towed to the dealership and after they " checked it out" , they told me all they found was a weak battery. The second time was a few days ago but this time, I was revving the engine as I was trying to get my car off the interstate. Thank goodness there was very little traffic. This time however, it restarted and I drove the rest of the way home.
When the throttle is lightly applied from a stop, the vehicle suddenly leapt forward, as if we stomped on the gas pedal. We almost hit our vehicle in the garage. Other times from a stop, giving it throttle to move the HRV would not accelerate.the HR-V would begin to slow down, even if I applied more throttle. It has happened a few times. We took the HRV to the dealer and they could not resolve the problem.
I got into car accident on 2/4/2023 and was hit on my driver side on highway, but my side airbag didn’t came out. I was hit twice on the same side and it was 4 car collision. Concerned about safety of this model. Police report was filed and Geico insurance inspector reported total loss for my car.
The fuel gauge went blank. I started my car and the screen was black. I had to restart the car and press the button that shows the oil life to get the gauge to come back on. This is a new problem and I have not scheduled service yet. The car also lurches forward sometime when I put my foot on the gas pedal. It jumps like I have pressed the pedal hard. The car also bucks when I am driving. It happens when I am going between 30-40 mph. I told the technician about the problem and he said I am the first person to complain about it.
Gas gauge/odometer display blacks out when the vehicle is cold. Does not come on again until the engine warms up.
I had three warning lights come on: brake system, electronic break, and E brake. I was told at the dealership that the factory warranty ended less then two weeks ago and thus neither the diagnostics nor any of the repairs would be covered by the warranty. Even though it is obviously a factory defect. Also after a little research it became very obvious that it is a very common occurrence among HRV’s that seems to be happening anywhere from weeks to years after purchase.
Driver side seatbelt does not latch properly and appears to be defective.
The vehicle developed a rattle and I took it to the dealer and was told that both rear shocks and dampers had to be replaced. When I went to pick up my vehcile, there was another vehicle that was the exact same year and model there with the same issue. My car has only 24,731 miles and was our of warranty by 1 month. This seams too coincidental form my car and another car to come in with the same problem, which leads me to believe that this may be a fault part. Please look out for this problem on other similar vehicles.
Failure of my Odometer/fuel gauge/ outdoor temp. This dial seems to go blank/black screen! This seems to happen in colder & wet weather. This could be a real SAFETY issue if my car ran out of gas on a 4 lane highway due to not being able to see fuel gauge! Also NOT being able to track mileage for oil changes or mileage for replacing tires! I am willing for NTSB or Honda to inspect my car!
