NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2020 Honda HR-V. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I bought my car used when it had around 11,000 miles on it. It didn't take long (maybe a month) before I noticed that the fuel gauge indicator above the steering wheel was malfunctioning. The screen stays off for a period of time and sometimes flickers on with indistinguishable text. There are times that it works just fine, but it is becoming less and less common. At first, I thought it was attributed to the cold weather, but it also happens in the heat. I recently had a separate recall repaired and asked the mechanic about this issue. He stated that several people had told him the same story and he said I would have to replace the entire gauge cluster to fix it. This is very unfortunate because I am someone who travels often and I can't be stuck in the middle of nowhere without gas because I was unable to determine how much I had. There should be another way to monitor how much gas you have. I can't see how much oil life I have left either, or the mileage on my car when the screen goes out. My car was at low mileage when I bought it, and it still only has around 30,000 miles on it so I do not understand why this issue is happening.
The contact owns a 2020 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that while driving at undisclosed speeds, the right side of the instrument panel was glitching or went blank. Over time, the entire right side of the instrument panel went blank and failed to operate as needed. Due to the failure, the contact was unable to view the mileage, oil level, or fuel level. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
I’m having an issue where the odometer/trip/fuel display is dark when I start the car and then it will flicker on and off with gibberish. Eventually it will display accurately. The other displays are not affected. It seems to be worse in the cold.
Driving 65 on freeway, power loss and all the lights came on. pulled over and put it in park, dash said i was still in N and i took my foot off brake and it was rolling. I shut car off and waited so i could get to safer place. was able to start up - with all lights flashing. Poor power, "limped" to the closest parking lot - about 1/2 mile. dealer said it was the battery and there were shavings in the transmission fluid. said they would check it again at my next oil change, but it was fine. 5 days later it happened again - same scenario. had it towed to closest dealership - and waiting for diagnosis. they suspect it needs a transmission replacement. they are checking with their "Honda TechLine"
The gauges on the dash will go blank, flash or have unreadable characters at different times. This happened the first time in February and stopped for a while. Now it is happening more often. Sometimes it will start as it is being driven down the road. There is no warning lamp or anything that happens before it malfunctions. Unless we keep track of the fuel level, we run the risk of running out of gas while driving as the fuel level is part of the gauge.
The contact owns a 2020 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that while driving on several occasions at various speeds, the vehicle stalled. On one occasion while approaching a light at approximately 20 MPH, the vehicle stalled and crashed into the rear of another vehicle. The contact mentioned that the husband completed cosmetic repairs. No injuries were reported. No police report was filed. The vehicle would restart each time within 2-30 minutes. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent half a dozen times and the failure was not able to be replicated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.

There has been an open recall on the vehicle since 12/13/2023 almost a year I have called and they sent a letter saying parts were in. I went over to the place they do not have the part. They said they have gotten one part per month for 500 vehicles on recall list.

This vehicle has some serious acceleration problems. Not only has this vehicle gone into limp mode on me on a very busy city road when it was only a couple of weeks old, but it also takes FOREVER for it to accelerate when pulling into traffic or while going up a hill. I have to press the gas pedal all the way down to the floor and still get nothing until I let up and press the gas again. I have had problems where the car will "spudder" and almost die as I'm exiting the highway coming to a stop and today it actually did completely die as I exited the highway and came to a stop at a red light. No check engine light or anything.
I was driving the car, pushing on the gas, it would barely move and all dash lights came on, I was able to safely pull over, fortunately
Dash cluster malfunctions, usually when starting often when the outdoor temperature is cold. The right cluster display is either blank or flickering gibberish. Cannot read my fuel gauge, temperature, mpg etc. Not knowing how much gas I have makes me feel unsafe.
The contact owns a 2020 Honda HR-V. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V046000 (Back Over Prevention). The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer and completed the recall remedy. The contact stated that a week later the radio would reset independently twice per day and the rear camera screen would be blank. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 46,800.
I was turning left into a parking spot at work with my foot slightly on the break when my engine revvved and my car accelerated at face pace and my brakes were unresponsive causing me to hit a parked truck in front of me. Upon impact my vehicle kept trying to accelerate causing me to keep pushing the truck until my front right side of my car broke off. My car STILL kept accelerating and went across the concrete parking block and finally came to a complete stop. Once stopped I could not get the vehicle to turn off. Within minutes the engine finally died. I work inside a chemical plant right next to a highly explosive unit so this could have been catastrophic. Not to mention the people that work there were coming into work as well and could have been pinned between the two vehicles. The plant I work at has thousands of employees. Had I been leaving work and crossing the highway and this occurred I would have been killed and most likely so would have others. I exit my job onto an extremely busy highway. A police report was not filed because it was inside the plant but several people witnessed it. I had to have my vehicle towed as it was too damaged to drive. I have not contacted Honda because I have seen numerous unresolved complaints so I doubt it would help. Prior to this accident I had no problems with the vehicle. My vehicle is in this shop still as this incident just happened 2 days ago. I would like to get rid of the vehicle but then someone else may buy it and have the same issue.

The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact stated that after parking and turning off the vehicle, the vehicle was not able to be restarted. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts. The contact stated that the failure was a recurring failure. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer and was informed that parts were not yet available to repair the vehicle. The failure mileage was 25,325. Parts distribution disconnect.
LCD screen inside instrument cluster does not read cannot get fuel amount or mileage.
The contact owns a 2020 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that while driving at a low speed attempting to park the vehicle at park, the vehicle unintendedly accelerated, jumped the curb and crashed into a fence. There were no warning lights illuminated. A police report was filed. The air bags did not deploy. There were no injuries sustained by the driver or the passenger. There was fire reported. The vehicle was towed to a body shop. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 3,000.
The sun roof exploded. It is available for inspection. Glass was showered into the vehicle as I was driving. I was on a heavy traffic highway- glass was expelled onto the road and vehicles behind me. The car has not yet been inspected by the dealer. Upon initial phone conversation, they advised that I drive the car in to be inspected, but they will not offer a loaner. Then advised I call roadside assistance and have it towed in. They claim no liability or defect in glass. I advised them that I don't feel safe even driving the car even after any possible repair.
I drive my car and if I tap the break just a little bit too hard, because I have to stop quickly or at lest slow down, my breaks locks up and I skid… i’ve never had this before in any car that I have owned. And I have owned Hondas before. I told the dealership in Richmond Indiana and in Tampa Florida about this problem more than once. they both just brushed it off and told me it was normal. I have complained more than once because my brakes have locked up on me more than once. Sometimes, I am doing 35 miles an hour and while approaching a red light… I try to push down on my brakes a little bit and it may lock up. It’s not good… As I’ve said I have a many new cars and I have never had this problem. The consumer stated the car locked up again at 12 miles an hr.
The car was inspected about 2 weeks prior to the accident. Airbags never deployed nor indicated and the car was smashed in. Electrical problem as I should have seen an indicator and airbags never deploy (wearing seat Belt, neck injury, shoulder and back and bilateral knee injuries)and I am as per dr. Order on medical leave as a result of this auto incident.
The car went up in smoke, the airbags never deployed and there was no indicators. The front was all smashed in. I’m completely disabled.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2020 HONDA HR-V. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE REVERSING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, THE BRAKES FAILED TO FUNCTION. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE REVERSED INTO A PARKED VEHICLE THAT WAS IN THE DRIVEWAY. THE CONTACT STATED NO WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALER OR INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 11,000.
BOUGHT NEW HONDA FROM DEALER, LESS THAN 4700 MILES. CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AFTER PUSHING GAS PEDAL ON HIGHWAY AND LOCAL WHILE DRIVING, IT SLOWS DOWN TO A DANGEROUS SPEED.
Sometimes when I am driving on any road flat, incline, up a hill/mountain trying to merge into traffic/pass a vehicle. I think I covered all of the situations. There is a DRAMATIC LOSS OF POWER or a PLAY or SOMETHING where I have to push the accelerator all the way to the FLOOR in order for it to get gas or gain speed to pass or to accomplish the task at hand. My 2020 HR-V only has a little over 17,500 miles. I also only put in gas from QT which is a TOP TIER GASOLINE. So I don’t know what the problem is but I am going to end up having a wreck because of this or worse dying because of this problem.
THE VIDEO SCREEN RADIO INSTALLED IN THIS VEHICLE IS SO DIFFICULT TO USE THAT IT'S MORE DANGEROUS THAN WATCHING TV AND DRIVING. IT LACKS TACTILE CONTROLS AND REQUIRES 4 TO 6 TOUCH SCREEN INPUTS TO ACCESS A SCREEN THAT REMOTELY RESEMBLES A RADIO. EVEN AS A PASSENGER I CANNOT ACCESS BASIC FUNCTIONS WITHOUT MULTIPLE TRIES.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2020 HONDA HR-V. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG PROTRUDED THROUGH THE PASSENGER SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO BREAKAWAY HONDA LOCATED AT 330 WOODRUFF RD, GREENVILLE, SC 29607, TO BE INSPECTED. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT NO FAILURE EXISTED WITH THE AIR BAG. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,300.
Upright seat back locks have often failed to lock upon adjustment of seat back on many occasions and since the vehicle was new. Honda “repaired” the driver seat, when the car was originally purchased, however refused to fix the passenger seat back lock. Their explanation was they checked other cars and they were all like that, which means they were all defective. Now have to pay to have drivers seat repaired due to this ongoing problem.
