2010 HONDA INSIGHT. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO DEFECTIVE BRAKING SYSTEM. *LD THE CONSUMER STATED THE BRAKE WAS DEPRESSED, BUT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. THE VEHICLE TRAVELED THROUGH A STOP LIGHT AT AN INTERSECTION, OVER A BARRIER, DROPPING APPROXIMATELY 30 FT AND WAS STRUCK BY ONCOMING TRAFFIC. *JS
APPROACHING STOP SIGN AT LOW RATE OF SPEED-I APPLIED BRAKES AND INSTEAD OF STOPPING CAR REVED UP AND WENT FORWARD INTO PATH OF ONCOMING CAR. OTHER PERSON RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES,I RECEIVED BRUISES AND SORENESS (2 OF MY AIRBAGS DEPLOYED) MY CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS,COMPLETE FRONT BUMPER OFF,FRAME BENT,HOOD BENT
UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION WHEN BRAKING, THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT THE SPEED LIMIT ON SECONDARY ROADS ~40 MPH NO TRAFFIC AND THE ROADS WERE CLEAR OF ICE AND SNOW AND THE ENGINE WAS WARM, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INDICATOR FOR COLD ENGINE HAD EXTINGUISHED. I APPROACHED A RED STREET LIGHT I PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL LIGHTLY, THERE WERE NO CARS IN FRONT OF ME (FOOT CLEARLY NOT ON THE GAS PEDAL) I EXPECTED THE CAR COME TO A LEISURELY STOP BY COASTING WITH LITTLE BRAKING HELP. THE BRAKE PEDAL FELT STIFF, RESISTED THE PRESSING OF THE FOOT. THE ENGINE BEGAN TO REV UP AND I ALSO NOTED THE BATTERY IMA CHARGE/ASSIST GAUGE WENT HIGHER INTO THE BLUE (IMA ASSIST). I APPLIED MORE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL THE ENGINE ACCELERATED MORE AND ASSIST GAUGE INCREASED FURTHER INTO THE BLUE AREA. I REPEAT: THE BRAKE PEDAL FEELS HARD LIKE PUTTING YOUR FOOT ON A ROCK, NO GIVE. I NOW KNOW THIS IS THE FIRST SIGN THERE IS GOING TO BE A BRAKING ISSUE. IT HAPPENED EVERY TIME THE PROBLEM OCCURS! BUT THE PROBLEM DID NOT OCCUR EVERY TIME I STOPPED ON THIS TRIP. WHEN I BRAKE AND THE CAR AND THE CAR GOES INTO AUTO-STOP MODE THERE IS NO ISSUE. WHEN THE UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION OCCURS I CAN SHIFT THE CAR OUT OF DRIVE (D) AND INTO NEUTRAL (N) THE ENGINE WILL MOMENTARILY RACE, EXCEEDING 5000 RPM, ALMOST RED LINING, AND THEN RETURN TO A NORMAL IDLE. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE PROBLEM PERSISTED THOUGHT THE TRIP WITH THE CAR BEING SHUT OFF AND PARKED FOR A SHORT TIME (2 OCCURRENCES) RESTARTED AND DRIVEN AGAIN. ONLY WHEN THE CAR WAS LEFT FOR HOURS INCLUDING OVERNIGHT DID THE PROBLEM GO AWAY, MY GUESS IS 19 HOURS. *TR
WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING PLACE AT A NEIGHBORHOOD GROCERY STORE, I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR ACCELERATED WITH A HUGE LUNGE INTO THE CAR FACING ME. IF THE OTHER VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN A LARGE VAN I WOULD HAVE NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STOP THE CAR BECAUSE AT THAT POINT I LOST COMPLETE CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE. JUST THINKING OF WHAT 'MIGHT HAVE BEEN' IS TERRIFYING! IN SEARCHING THE INTERNET I FOUND AT LEAST FOUR OF THESE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ACCOUNTS..... SAME CAR, SAME YEAR, SAME MODEL. NO RECALL YET BUT THERE SHOULD BE. DAMAGE IS EXPECTED TO BE AROUND $5K.
IN JANUARY 2012, MY CAR THE 2010 INSIGHT, "UNPREDICTABLY ACCELERATED, THEN AT THE SAME TIME, THE BRAKES LOCKED". THIS CAUSED THE CAR TO MOVE FORWARD AT AN ACCELERATED RATE WITH NO DRIVER CONTROL. IT HAPPENED TWICE IN A SHORT TIME SPAN BUT DID NOT HAPPEN IN THE PREVIOUS 1 1/2 YRS THAT I'VE OWNED THE CAR. I HAD AN ACCIDENT THE FIRST TIME. IT IMPACTED MY INSURANCE. THE SECOND TIME I WAS LUCKY. I DO NOT WANT TO RISK A THIRD TIME. I'M AN EXPERIENCED CAREFUL DRIVER AND THESE INCIDENTS WERE NOT NORMAL. I HAVE DRIVEN TRUCKS, VANS, CARS, AUTOMATIC AND STANDARD IN EVERY TYPE OF CANADIAN WEATHER. THIS HAPPENED TWICE IN THE SAME WAY CAUSING A LOSS OF CONTROL. I WAS GOING 1 MILE PER HOUR THE FIRST TIME, WHILE SLOWING DOWN FOR A LIGHT. I FELT LIKE SOMEONE WAS PUSHING ME AND I WENT VERY SLOWLY UPHILL INTO THE REAR END OF THE VEHICLE STOPPED AT THE RED LIGHT. THE SECOND TIME AGAIN I WAS SLOWING DOWN FOR A LIGHT, GOING 2 MILES PER HOUR ON A FLAT SURFACE. I HAD TO GO OFF THE ROAD AND HIT A SNOW BANK TO STOP. I DETAILED THE INCIDENTS AND ESCALATED TO HONDA CANADA AND MY DEALERSHIP. I GAVE THE DEALERSHIP THE CAR TO TEST. I WANT TO TRADE IT FOR A CIVIC. THEY TRIED TO BLAME THE PROBLEM ON THE FLOOR MATS WHICH IS NOT LOGICAL SINCE THE PROBLEM DID NOT OCCUR EVERY TIME I BRAKED. AFTER KEEPING MY CAR FOR 2 WEEKS THEY REPLIED, COMPLETELY IGNORING THE LOCKED BRAKE ASPECT, AND TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM WITH THE ACCELERATION SYSTEM. SO. THEIR OFFICIAL DOCUMENTED REPLY IGNORES THE PRIMARY PROBLEM, DEALS WITH THE SECONDARY PROBLEM AND DENIES THERE IS ANY PROBLEM. I HAVE TO PERSIST. I DON'T WANT TO DIE OR HURT OR KILL ANYONE. A RECALL IS WARRANTED. I AM REPORTING THE ENTIRE MATTER HERE, BECAUSE AFTER THEY REPLIED SAYING THERE IS NO PROBLEM, I SEARCHED ONLINE WHERE I FOUND OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. NOTE: I LIVE IN CANADA. THE CAR WON'T STOP COMPLETELY AND KEEPS GOING FOR ANOTHER 2 TO 3 SECONDS IF IT HITS A BUMP DURING BRAKING. MY CAR IS SERVICED AT THE HONDA DEALER EVERY 5000 MILES SINCE I GOT IT BACK ON JULY 2009, THEREFORE, IT COULDN'T BE LACK OF MAINTENANCE. *JS
WHILE APPROACHING A RED LIGHT AT A LOW SPEED OF 35 MPH OR LESS, I BEGAN TO APPLY THE BRAKES WHICH DID NOT ENGAGE. I HIT THE DRIVER WHO WAS STOPPED IN FRONT OF ME. THE IMPACT CAUSED FRONT END DAMAGE AND THE AIR BAG TO DEPLOY AND REQUIRED A TRIP TO THE ER I AM SEEKING ASSISTANCE FROM MY DEALERSHIP AND/OR HONDA. *TR
