HONDA OF CLEAR LAKE IN WEBSTER, TX INFORMED ME THAT ALL THE MOTOR MOUNTS WERE BROKEN AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED ON MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY WITH 61,711 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THE DEALERSHIP WROTE $$$$$$$$$$$$ FOR THEIR ESTIMATE. I'VE READ ONLINE MANY OTHER HONDA ODYSSEY OWNERS WITH THE SAME COMPLAINTS. THE MOTOR MOUNT DESIGNS ARE DEFECTIVE TO HAVE FAILED SO SOON. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL. I REPLACED THE MOTOR MOUNTS ON MY TOYOTA COROLLA AT 180,000 MILES FOR A COMPARISON. *TR
THE DRIVER SIDE POWER DOOR ON MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY WILL NOT CLOSE ALL THE WAY. IT OPENS AS I DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD. IT IS THE REAR LATCH SYSTEM ON THE DRIVERS SIDE POWER SLIDING DOOR. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE THAT THE 1999'S WERE HAVING AND THEY WERE RECALLED. THIS ISSUE IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND IN MY OPINION NEEDS TO BE FIXED ASAP. *TR
OUR 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY HAD A TRANSMISSION FAIL ON US AT 80,000 MILES IN 2008. NOW 2 YEARS LATER AT 119,000 IT HAS FAILED AGAIN. THE FIRST TIME WE WERE STRANDED WAITING FOR A TOW TRUCK, THIS LAST TIME ON SATURDAY, WE WERE ABLE TO MAKE IT UP TO THE DEALERSHIP. WE ARE NOW FACING ANOTHER $4000 REPAIR BILL. THE SECOND TRANSMISSION ONLY LASTED 39,000 MILES OR HALF OF THE ORIGINAL. *TR
SINCE FEB 2010 OUR 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN SLIPPING AT 135,000 MILES. A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, WAS IMMEDIATELY TAKEN TO MECHANIC WITH THE FOLLOWING CODES PO845, PO730, PO700. THE MECHANIC AND HONDA BOTH CONFIRMED THAT THE CAR NEEDS A NEW TRANSMISSION AND THAT HONDA HAS HAD SIGNIFICANT PROBLEMS WITH THESE TRANSMISSIONS. *TR
IGNITION LOCK FAILURE. IN 2007, OUR DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR LOCK CEASED WORKING, BUT WE'VE WORKED AROUND IT. NOW THE IGNITION LOCK STOPPED WORKING. "WEAR AND TEAR" ACCORDING TO THE DEALER. THIS IS THE SECOND INCIDENT LIKE THIS ON NHTSA'S SITE. *TR
INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) I BROUGHT A BRAND NEW 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY VAN FROM AN AUTHORIZED HONDA DEALER. THE VAN IS ONLY HAS 72K MILES ON IT AND THE SECOND GEAR SLIPPING AS MY WIFE DRIVE ON HIGHWAY. THE VAN IS SUDDENLY SLOWING DOWN ON A 65 MILE ZONE WITH LIGHTS FLASHES ON THE DASHBOARD, AND STOP COMPLETELY. I LATER ON FIND OUT THE TRANSMISSION IS DEFECTIVE WITH THE COMPUTER MODULE. THE VIN NUMBER IS [XXX]. HONDA IS SELLING DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION WHICH WAS NOT FIX IN THE FIRST PLACE. THE INCIDENT MY WIFE HAD ALMOST RESULTED IN A CRASH ON A BUSY HIGHWAY. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THERE ARE MORE THAN 350 CASES SIMILAR TO MINE. I ALSO INFORMED THAT HONDA DID A RECALL BACK IN 2004 BUT APPARENTLY DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. NOW HONDA IS NOT WILLING TO TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO FIX IT. *TR
AT 74,000 MY HONDA ODYSSEY'S TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I HAD PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN 2007 AS A CERTIFIED HONDA VEHICLE AT A FLORIDA HONDA DEALERSHIP. WE HAD THEN MOVE TO MASSACHUSETTS WHERE I BEGAN TAKING MY VAN TO ANOTHER HONDA DEALERSHIP CLOSE BY. IT WAS THERE AT THE END OF 2008 I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE COMPLAINING THAT IT SEEMED JUMPY, ESPECIALLY WHEN PUT IN REVERSE. I TOLD THEM I WAS CONCERNED IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION. THIS WAS ALL WHILE MY CAR WAS STILL COVERED UNDER ITS WARRANTY. THEY ASSURED ME THAT MY ODYSSEY WAS FINE. THEN IN THE BEGINNING OF 2010WHEN YOU PUSHED ON THE GAS THE VAN SEEMED TO NOT ACCELERATE AND MY ENGINE AND TCS LIGHT CAME ON. AT THE TIME WE DID NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO DO ANY REPAIRS SO WE STOPPED DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR A FEW MONTHS. THEN IN APRIL I TOOK THE VAN TO A LOCAL GARAGE WHO INFORMED ME THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS IN SHOCK BECAUSE IN NOVEMBER OF 2008 I HAD COMPLAINED THAT I THOUGHT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH MY TRANSMISSION AND WAS TOLD NOTHING WAS FOUND. I OPENED A CASE WITH AMERICAN HONDA WHO OFFERED TO PAY $2000 OF THE REPAIRS. I OF COURSE ASKED FOR MORE BUT THEY REFUSED. I ENDED UP HAVING TO PAY OUT $2600 TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AND REPLACE THE TIMING BELT. I HAVE SINCE SEEN ON THE COMPUTER ALL THE PROBLEMS THAT HONDA HAS HAD WITH TRANSMISSIONS AND AM ASTONISHED THAT THEY ARE NOT BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR POOR QUALITY AUTOMOBILES. SO MUCH FOR BUYING A VEHICLE TO LAST FOR OUR GROWING FAMILY. I AM BEGGING FOR SOMEONE TO INVESTIGATE AND HOLD HONDA ACCOUNTABLE FOR FAULTY AND POOR QUALITY TRANSMISSIONS. IT IS QUITE APPARENT THAT THE TRANSMISSIONS ON THE 1999-2004 ODYSSEY'S AND MAYBE MORE ARE NOT LARGE ENOUGH OR STRONG ENOUGH TO CARRY THE LOAD OF A MINI-VAN. THEY WERE FAULTY FROM THE BEGINNING AND IT IS UNFAIR TO LEAVE US VEHICLE OWNERS HOLDING THE BAG. I HAVE ALSO HAD THE MOUNTING BRACKET FOR THE ALTERNATOR REPLACED 3 TIMES AND HAD THE MOUNTING BOLT BROKEN OFF IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. THAT WAS ALL COVERED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED AFTER SHE DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER AND WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHERE SHE WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION. SHE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED THAT THEY WOULD REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AND PAY 50% OF THE REPAIR COSTS. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 82,650.
2003 HONDA ODYSSEY TORQUE CONVERTER CAME APART. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY DOWN THE HIGHWAY WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN MY WIFE LOST THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE. THE RPM NOZZLE WAS GOING UP BUT THE CAR COULD NOT ACCELERATE ANYMORE. AFTERWARD MY SON BEGAN TO SEE SMOKE COMING FROM THE BACK OF THE CAR. WE PULLED THE CAR OVER AND IMMEDIATELY GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS QUITE A BIT OF SMOKE COMING OUT FROM THE ENGINE AREA AND A LOT OF OIL DRIPPING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR. WE CALLED TRIPLE A AND HAD THEM PICK THE VEHICLE UP AFTER 2HRS OF WAITING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN THE RAIN. THEN WE HAD IT DROPPED OFF TO THE MECHANIC AND HE STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS DEAD. WE THEN DISCOVERED THAT THE 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY HAD A TRANSMISSION RECALL IN 2004. I REJOICED AND THOUGHT CLEARLY THIS IS WHY THIS HAPPENED AS MY VEHICLE ONLY HAD 85,000 MILES ON IT. NEVERTHELESS, WHEN I SPOKE WITH HONDA ABOUT IT THEY SAID THAT THE PROBLEM WAS SOLVED FOR MY VEHICLE IN AUGUST 2004. THEREFORE THE BEST DEAL THEY COULD PROVIDE TO ME WAS TO COVER 60% OF THE COST. I TOLD THEM I CANNOT AFFORD THE 40% DIFFERENTIAL AND I DO NOT BELIEVE I SHOULD PAY IT BECAUSE THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED TO A HONDA UNDER 100,000 MILES. THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS BEFORE OR AFTER THE INCIDENT. NEVERTHELESS, THEY MENTIONED THAT THEY ARE NOT SURE WHAT ELSE THEY COULD DO. I AM COMPLAINING BECAUSE CLEARLY HONDA DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE IN 2004 ELSE WE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE PROBLEM AT 85,000 MILES AGAIN. I AM SOLICITING WHATEVER HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE TO ME IN THIS SITUATION. *TR
WHEN I WAS PROCEEDING AT ABOUT 60 MILES/HOUR ON THE HIGH WAY WITH MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY, THE TRANSMISSION SUDDENLY LOCKED UP PERIODICALLY. WE WERE ALMOST GETTING INTO TWO ACCIDENTS IN A COUPLE MINUTES. FINALLY, THE TRANSMISSION WAS GONE. NOW DEALER IS ASKING ABOUT $5000 DOLARS TO REPLACE IT. HOWEVER, IT WAS HAPPENED BECAUSE OF MANUFACTURER ERROR SINCE THIS CAR WAS RECALLED FOR THE TRANSMISSION ISSUE.
DEAR SIR; ON TUESDAY, MARCH 16, 2010, WHILE DRIVING IN THE VISALIA, THE SUBJECT HONDA'S TRANSMISSION FAILED. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE VEHICLE TO THE YOUR DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED THE TRANSMISSION WAS FAILING IN GEAR RATIO SWITCH FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS INOPERABLE. I WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER THAT THERE WAS A TRANSMISSION RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE IN 2004, I DO NOT RECALL TAKING THE VEHICLE IN FOR INSPECTION/REPAIR. THE HONDA SERVICE MANAGER SAID THE HONDA RECORDS SHOWED THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED; THERE IS NO PAPERWORK WITH MY SIGNATURE INDICATING MY ACCEPTANCE OF ANY SUCH RECALL ORDER. IF THE TRANSMISSION INSPECTION DID, IN FACT, TAKE PLACE, APPARENTLY IT DID NOT THOROUGHLY EVALUATE MY VEHICLE'S TRANSMISSION SITUATION. IN THE PAST THE HONDA DEALERSHIP HAS PERFORMED TWO TRANSMISSION OIL CHANGES, WITHIN A SHORT TIME, BECAUSE THE OIL WAS TURNING BROWN. I USED A DIFFERENT MECHANIC TO DO MY ROUTINE MOTOR OIL CHANGES AND THAT MECHANIC INFORMED ME THE TRANSMISSION OIL WAS BROWN AGAIN AND REPLACED IT, AND THERE WAS NO FURTHER PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION OIL. I CANNOT EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE IN THE OIL CHANGE PROCEDURE BETWEEN AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THE HONDA DEALERSHIP. I WAS INFORMED TODAY BY THE HONDA DEALERSHIP THAT THEY CHANGED THEIR TRANSMISSION OIL EQUIPMENT WITH UPDATED TECHNOLOGY. TODAY, UNDER PROTEST, I AUTHORIZED HONDA DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION IN THE SUBJECT VAN. IT WAS NOT FEASIBLE FOR ME TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER MECHANIC. THE COST OF THE REPLACEMENT WILL BE APPROXIMATELY $5800.00 MINUS 25% = APP. $3900.00. I FEEL HONDA NOT DID PROPERLY TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM THAT WAS SUBJECT OF A RECALL; THEY WERE UNABLE TO SHOW THEY INSPECTED MY VEHICLE WITH MY SIGNATURE ACCEPTING THE CONDITION OF THE VEHICLE. I REQUEST HONDA RECONSIDER THE COSTS OF THE REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION AND AFFORD ME AT LEAST A BIGGER DISCOUNT, IF NOT FULL COVERAGE OF THE REPAIR COSTS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH, THERE WAS A SUDDEN AND ABNORMAL INCREASE IN ENGINE RPMS BEFORE RETURNING TO NORMAL. THE RPMS BEGAN TO RAPIDLY FLUCTUATE INTERMITTENTLY. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER AGREED TO PROVIDE PARTIAL ASSISTANCE FOR THE COST OF REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS LEFT WITH THE DEALER, BUT HAD NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 122,000.
I DROVE MY CAR TO HONDA DEALER IN HILLSIDE , NJ FOR CHECK-ENGINE-LIGHT ON. ITS SERVICE REP GAVE ME CODES PO 700 & PO 740 FOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. HE FIRST GAVE ESTIMATION OF AROUND $4000. I IMMEDIATELY TOLD HIM NO, NOT TO FIX IT. HE THEN SAID TO CHECK HONDA FOR COST. I DROVE AWAY AND HE CALLED ME FOR A QUOTE OF ABOUT $2100. I SAID NO WHEN HE GAVE ME COST OF $4000 BECAUSE I DECIDED TO SELL THE CAR AND BUY A NEW ONE. I TOLD HIM TO ORDER THE PART WHEN HE CALLED ME LATER ON BECAUSE HE COULD FIX THE PROBLEMS AT $2100. DEALER HAD TRANSMISSION CHANGED ON 3/8/10 , AND THE NEXT DAY (3/9/10) THE SAME CHECK-ENGINE-LIGHT CAME ON WITHIN 24 HOURS. I DROVE BACK TO THE DEALER. I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED THAT THE REP GUY TOLD ME THAT ANYTHING COULD CAUSE THE LIGHT ON, AND THE TECHNICIAN GAVE A DIFFERENT CODE. I WAS THEN TOLD IT WAS NOT CHEAP TO FIX IT. I QUESTIONED WHY THEY DID NOT GIVE ME ALL THE PROBLEM CODES AND COSTS IN THE BEGINNING. I WOULD HAVE MADE DECISION TO TRADE IN INSTEAD OF SPENDING $2200, AND THEN BEING TOLD MORE SPENDING TO COME. I WENT IN FOR THE CHECK-ENGINE-LIGHT ON AND I CAME BACK FOR THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITHIN 24 HOURS. WHY WOULDN'T I SELL IT BEFORE I PUT IN $2200? THE SERVICE REP GUY HAD SUCH A BAD ATTITUDE BY KICKING OUT PROBLEMS AND PUSHING AWAY RESPONSIBILITIES. HE SAID DEALER DID NOT MANUFACTURE THE CAR AND INSISTED SAYING MY CAR WAS 10 YEARS OLD. THE SERVICE MANAGER, REQUESTED THE TECHNICIAN TO RESET THE LIGHT, AND SAID HOPEFULLY IT WOULD NOT COME BACK ON AGAIN. I'M AWARE IF A PROBLEM EXISTS, LIGHT WILL COME BACK ON SOONER OR LATER. AND INSPECTION WON'T GO THROUGH WHEN SUCH A LIGHT IS ON. AS PREDICTED, SAME CHECK-ENGINE-LIGHT CAME BACK ON THE 3/10/10 WITHIN 48 HOURS. AND I CALLED THE MANAGER, HE SAID IT WAS GOING TO COST ANOTHER $875 PLUS TAX. I DIDN'T EXPECT A TRANSMISSION'S PROBLEM BEFORE 100K MILES FOR A JAPANESE CAR. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED. *TR
1. FAILURE OCCURRED MUST LIKELY THROUGH DEFECTIVE PARTS IN 2003-2005 HONDA ODYSSEY'S. 2. FRONT AND SIDE ENGINE MOUNTS NO LONGER CONNECTED. 3. FAILURE HAS NOT YET BEEN REPLACED. FAILURE OF THE MOUNTS LEAVES THE POSSIBILITY OF ENGINE DROPPING OUT. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH ODYSSEY'S OF THIS YEAR. NOT NEAR CAR TO OBTAIN VIN#. *TR
THE SHIFT INTERLOCK FAILED IN MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY AND IT ROLLED BACKWARDS IN A PARKING GARAGE AND HIT TWO PARKED CARS. I WAS ABLE TO TAKE THE KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION IN ANY GEAR AND APPARENTLY THAT DAY I PULLED MY KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION WHILE IT WAS STILL IN DRIVE. THE PARKING SPACE SEEMED LEVEL SO I DIDN'T APPLY THE PARKING BRAKE. IT MUST HAVE ROLLED WHEN OTHER CARS DROVE PAST. I CALLED HONDA THAT DAY TO REPORT IT AND ATTEMPTED TO GET THEM TO PAY FOR THE FAILURE. THEY WOULDN'T PAY SAYING THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I HAD THE PROBLEM FIXED AT MY LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP FOR JUST OVER $500.00 THE DAMAGE TO MY CAR WAS OVER $2500.00 AND I DID DAMAGE TO TWO OTHER CARS THAT MY INSURANCE COMPANY HAD TO PAY FOR. THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS AROUND AND NO ONE GOT HURT. THIS HAPPENED IN A HOSPITAL PARKING GARAGE. *TR
HONDA ODYSSEY 2003 - GEAR SHIFTING POORLY, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNS ON AT AROUND 84K. HONDA DEALER DIAGNOSES IT AND STATES THAT THE FAILURE CODE INDICATES INTERNAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE. MECHANICS SAW DARK/DISFIGURED TRANSMISSION FLUID AND REPRODUCED THE GEAR SHIFT PROBLEM. DEALER CLAIMS NO WARRANTY OR RECALL COVERED. SEEMS LIKE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM REQUIRING A RECALL. IN LIEU OF THE TOYOTA PROBLEMS, HONDA SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED. VERY EXPENSIVE TO FIX (QUOTED $5500+TAX), ALMOST THE PRICE OF THE VAN. *TR

MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY(AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) HAS BEEN SLIPPING GEARS AND HAVING TROUBLE SHIFTING INTO GEARS WHEN ACCELERATING OR DRIVING IN TRAFFIC JAM. ON FEBRUARY 28, 2010 AFTER DRIVING SOME 40 MILES ON THE HIGHWAY AND EXITED ON A RAMP, THE TRANSMISSION LOCKED WHEN THE CAR WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP AT A STOP SIGN ON THE RAMP. ONCE THE TRANSMISSION LOCKED, THE ENGINE DIED. THEN I STARTED THE CAR NUMEROUS TIMES AND EACH TIME THE ENGINE STARTED WHEN IN PARKING OR IN NEUTRAL. HOWEVER, WHEN I SHIFTED TO DRIVE OR D1, D2 OR TO REAR, THE ENGINE ALWAYS SHUT OFF. LUCKILY, AFTER A DOZEN TIMES OR SO, I GOT LUCKY TO PUT THE CAR INTO GEAR, AND SLOWLY DROVE HOME, THE CAR JERKING AND ENGINE ON THE BRINK OF SHUTTING OFF AS I DROVE SOME 3 MILES BACK HOME AT 20 MPH. THE NEXT DAY, MARCH 1ST I COULD PUT THE CAR INTO GEAR AT ALL. EACH AND EVERY TIME I SHIFTED FROM EITHER PARK OR NEUTRAL TO DRIVE OR REAR THE ENGINE SHUT OFF. I TOWED THE CAR TO CARRS HONDA IN CHICAGO. DEALER CHECKED AND PERFORMED A RECALL ON THE SECOND GEAR BY INSTALLING AN OIL JET KIT. DEALER SAID MY TRANSMISSION HAS INTERNAL FAILURE AND SAID THAT THIS FAILURE WAS NOT RELATED TO THE RECALL OF THE SECOND GEAR. HOW CONVENIENT! I DID CONTACT HONDA AT THEIR CORPORATE OFFICE IN CA AND EXPLAINED WHAT HAPPENED BUT SINCE DEALER SAID THAT MY CAR IS NOT COVERED BY THE PROVISIONS OF THE RECALL, THEN I COULD NOT GET ANY FINANCIAL HELP FROM HONDA. I MANAGED TO GET PICTURE COPIES OF THE SECOND GEAR FROM MY DEALER AND WANTED TO GET PICTURES OF THE SAME 2ND GEAR AT A DIFFERENT TRANSMISSION SHOP. HOWEVER, HONDA MADE IT CLEAR THAT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES IT WILL ACCEPT PICTURES MADE BY NON-HONDA DEALER. THERE WERE NO CODES TO BE FOUND. 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY HAS AN APPARENT DESIGN FLAW IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. AFTER 60,000 MILES, THE TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED. DRIVING THE CAR DURING THE 3 DAYS AFTER FAILURE WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS WITH THE CLUTCH INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING CAUSING HIGH REVVING AND LACK OF CONTROL. SLOWING DOWN (RESULTING IN DOWNSHIFTING) CAUSES THE CAR TO "JERK" SINCE THE CLUTCH ISN'T FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND THE CAR ISN'T ABLE TO SMOOTHLY CHANGE GEARS. DESPITE HAVING THIS RECALL TAKEN CARE OF BY THE DEALERSHIP IN 2004, THE TRANSMISSION HAS STILL FAILED. VEHICLE: 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY WITH 84,000 MILES. WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR VAN HOME FROM THE GYM AND UPON RETURNING HOME REPORTED TO ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING AS IT SHIFTED FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR. I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE HONDA REPAIR SHOP ABOUT 5 MILES AWAY AND OBSERVED THE SAME THING. THEY WENT AND "DIAGNOSED" THE PROBLEM AND REPORTED TO ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED REPLACED. IN FACT, THEY SAID THAT THEY BARELY MADE IT BACK TO THEIR SHOP AT THE CONCLUSION OF THEIR DIAGNOSIS. IN ADDITION TO TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT, HONDA REQUIRES THAT THE ENGINE CONTROL COMPUTER BE REPLACED AS WELL BECAUSE THERE IS NEW VERSION THAT RUNS THE TRANSMISSION. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS YEAR AND MODEL OF VEHICLE RELATING TO THE TRANSMISSION, BUT WAS SIMPLY AN INSPECTION AN A SUBSEQUENT INSTALL OF AN "OIL JET." THIS RECALL HAD BEEN COMPLIED WITH ON MY VEHICLE. I BELIEVE HONDA KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THESE TRANSMISSIONS AND IS DOING A DISSERVICE TO CONSUMERS. THE EARLY RECALL COUPLED WITH THEIR REQUIREMENT TO REPLACE THE COMPUTER, AND THEIR WILLINGNESS TO PAY A PORTION OF MY REPAIR TO ME IS PROOF OF THEIR ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF A PROBLEM WITH THEIR INITIAL DESIGN. NEITHER SEEMS FAIR. TRANSMISSION FAILED IN OCTOBER AND WAS $5,200 BUT GIVEN A $1,800 DISCOUNT. THIS IS THE 6TH MAJOR REPAIR TO THIS VAN SINCE ITS PURCHASE AS A NEW VEHICLE. OUR AUTO MECHANIC CHECKED THE CODE (PO740) AND FOUND THAT IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE LOCKUP CONTROL SYSTEM (TRANSMISSION). ROAD TEST DIDN'T REVEAL ANY PROBLEMS. THE MECHANIC FROZE THE DATA/CLEARED THE CODE TO SEE IF ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME BACK ON. IT DID NOT. HOWEVER, WE SUBSEQUENTLY EXPERIENCED THE LURCHING OF GEARS WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT HIGH SPEED: NOVEMBER 29TH, 2009; DECEMBER 23RD, DECEMBER 25TH. IT HAPPENS UNEXPECTEDLY AND WITHOUT ANY PREDICTABILITY WHEN WE ARE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. SINCE THE FIRST INCIDENT, WE'VE TRIED TO AVOID DRIVING THE CAR ON THE HIGHWAY. WE ARE CURRENTLY BORROWING A CAR FROM FAMILY AND ARE TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO HAVE IT REPAIRED FOR A REASONABLE COST. WE WILL NOT DRIVE OUR CHILDREN IN THE CAR ANY LONGER BECAUSE WE BELIEVE IT IS PUTTING THEM AT RISK. *TR
2003 HONDA ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON HIGHWAY. DRIVING UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS WITHIN THE SPEED LIMIT, UPON DOWNSHIFT INTO OVERDRIVE THE TRANSMISSION "SLIPPED" CAUSING A DRIVING SAFETY SITUATION AT FULL SPEED PUTTING MY ENTIRE FAMILY AT RISK OF AN ACCIDENT. THE TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED AND CONTINUED TO PERFORM UNACCEPTABLY OFF AND ON THAT DAY. I STOPPED DRIVING IT EXCEPT TO TAKE IT TO THE SHOP WHERE THEY TOLD ME IT HAS TO BE REPLACED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A COMPLETE STOP, THE TRANSMISSION RESPONDED EXTREMELY SLOW WITH SEVERE HESITATION. THE RPMS BEGAN TO INCREASE RAPIDLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, WHO RECOMMENDED THAT THE TRANSMISSION BE REPLACED. THERE WAS A RECALL RELATED TO THE FAILURE ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 04V176000 (POWER TRAIN). THE VIN WAS ELIGIBLE UNDER THE RECALL BUT THE DEALER WOULD NOT HONOR THE RECALL BECAUSE THE SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS IN THE TRANSMISSION WERE NOT BURNT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
