I RECENTLY HAD AIRBAG RECALL WORK ON MY CAR. ALL OF A SUDDEN, 2 DAYS AGO MY DOORS UNLOCKED WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I RELOCKED THEM AND A FEW MINUTES LATER THEY UNLOCKED AGAIN. THIS KEEPS HAPPENING. I AM THINKING THAT THIS IS RELATED TO THE RECALL WORK THAT WAS DONE ABOUT A MONTH AGO. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. I DON'T KNOW IF ANY OTHER OWNERS HAVE REPORTED THESE OCCURRENCES. I SPOKE TO HONDA AND THEY TOLD ME I HAVE TO TAKE MY CAR TO THE HONDA DEALER THAT DID THE RECALL WORK TO CHECK OUT THE PROBLEM, BUT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE DEALER TO CHECK IT OUT. BASED ON NHTSA RECALL 04V-176 - TRANSMISSION RECALL, ANY CAR BELOW 15K MILES WILL HAVE A RETURN LINE INSTALLED TO LUBRICATE THE 2ND GEAR. ABOVE 15K MILES NEEDS TO BE EXAMINED BY THE DEALER FOR DISCOLORATION OF THE CLUTCHE PLATES INSIDE THE GEAR BOX. HONDA STATED THAT THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM WITH A RETURN LINE, BUT IN FACT IF THE 2ND GEAR HAD THIS ISSUE, THIS IS NOT A FIX, BUT JUST A WORK AROUND TO SAVE REPAIR COST FOR HONDA. HOW DID NHTSA APPROVE SUCH A TEMP REMEDIATION, WHEN THE TRANSMISSIONS ARE FAULTY. OPENED UP A CASE WITH HONDA AND I WAS TOLD THAT IF THE TRANNY HAS AN ISSUES BUT IS OPERATIONAL, IT IS NOT CONSIDERED AS FAULTY. HOW CAN HONDA STATE IF THE CAR IS OPERATIONAL, IT IS NOT FAULTY, IN THAT CASE DOES HONDA EXPECT THE VAN TO BREAK AND BE UNOPERATIONAL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD IN ORDER TO CLAIM THE ISSUE AS A RECALL ? MY SERVCE REPORT FROM THE DEALER CLEARLY STATES THAT THE RECALL OF THE RETURN LINE TO THE 2ND GEAR SHOULD ONLY BE DONE IF THE VEHICLE WAS BELOW 15K MILES, HOW WAS THIS DONE ON MY CAR WITH 40K MILES AND ABOVE. AND HOW WAS THIS AUTHORIZED OR IS IT LEGAL ? GOT A REPORT FROM THE DEALER RECENTLY WHICH CLEARLY STATES THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE 2ND GEAR NOT SHIFTING TO THE NEXT GEAR. EVERY HONDA ODYSSEY OWNER KNOWS THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM IS DUE TO FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS AND INFERIROR CLUTCH PLATES IN THE 2ND AND 3RD GEARS. I ANTICIPATE NHTSA TAKE ACTIONS ON SUCH CORPORATIONS WHO TRY TO EVADE THE SYSTEMS AND PROVIDE A PATCH/WORK AROUND SOLUTIONS WHICH IS NOT A PERMANENT FIX. SERVICE REPORTS WILL BE PROVIDED IF REQUIRED
THE GEAR IN THE TRANSMISSION BROKEN IN TO PIECES, SHOT IN TO BEARING AND BROKEN THE CASE OF TRANSMISSION, MADE A TERRIBLE BIG SOUND. THE CAR ON FREE WAY IN MORE THAN 65 MILES, ALL THE LIGHTS IS ON. PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON FOR A FEW SECONDS WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED LIMIT. THEN VEHICLE SEEMS LIKE THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING OR TOOK A FEW SECONDS TO ENGAGE FROM A STARTING MOVEMENT FORWARD LEAVING A STOP LIGHT. AT IDLE THE TACHOMETER STARTED TO REV BETWEEN 1100-2000 RPMS AT STANDING IDLE IN PARK.THE SLIDING DOORS GET JAMMED STUCK WHEN ATTEMPTING TO OPEN FROM THE DASH CONTROLS. I KNOW THESE COULD CAUSE AND ACCIDENT AND NOT BE ABLE TO GET NY CHILDREN OUT OF THE VEHICLE VIA THE SLIDING POWER SIDE DOORS.VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED ON 12-12-2014. *TR
I WAS DRIVING AT NIGHT. I WENT TO CHANGE MY HEADLIGHTS FROM HIGH BEAMS TO LOW BEAMS. ALL THE LIGHTS WENT OFF. I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED. THE LEVER ON THE STEERING WHEEL WAS STUCK. I PUSHED IT FORWARD FORCEFULLY AND THE LIGHTS CAME ON AGAIN. I COULD NOT GET ISSUES TO REPEAT ITSELF. *TR
THE TRANSMISSION DISENGAGED AT 65 MPH AND I HAD TO KEEP CYCLING THE GAS PEDAL UNTIL THE TRANS CAUGHT ON AT 40 MPH AND THIS WENT ON UNTIL I BROUGHT IT HOME. I WAS ABLE TO TAKE IT TO THE HONDA DEALER AND THEY SAID I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. *TR

THE TRANSMISSION WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THE SECOND GEAR TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
I OWNED 2003 ODYSSEY FOR YEARS (APPROX. 125,000 M NOW), LAST WEEK I DROVE ON THE HIGHWAY ABOUT 70 MPH BACK HOME THEN SUDDENLY WITH NO POWER, LUCKILY, THE CAR AFTER ME WAS TOO FAR TO HIT ME. I PULLED THE CAR OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND RESTART AGAIN. THE ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. I MANAGED TO DRIVE HOME IN 20~30 MPH. CHECKED ONLINE AND FOUND OUT HONDA DID RECALL FOR THE TRANSMISSION ISSUE BUT STILL CAN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM. REALLY LOVE THIS VAN, STILL DEBATING HOW TO DO IT, NOT DARE TO DRIVE NOW. HONDA SHOULD TAKE THE FULL RESPONSIBILITY TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE, NO MATTER WHO OWNS THE VAN. NOT JUST CARE ABOUT THE COMPANY?S PROFITS AND IGNORE THE TRAGEDY WILL BE HAPPENED ANYTIME. I CALLED THE HONDA RECALL TELEPHONE NUMBER LISTED ON THEIR WEB SITE. I HAD READ THAT 2003 HONDA ODYSSEYS MAY CONTAIN TAKADA AIR BAG INFLATORS MANUFACTURED WITH INADEQUATE MANUFACTURING CONTROL. THE CURRENT RECALL (AS STATED ON THEIR WEB SITE) IS LIMITED TO 13 U.S. STATES AND TERRITORIES THAT "CONSISTENTLY EXPERIENCE HIGH ABSOLUTE HUMIDITY". THE LIST DOES NOT INCLUDE INDIANA. THE HONDA REPRESENTATIVE SAID THERE WAS NO WAY OF KNOWING WHAT AIRBAG INFLATOR WAS INSTALLED IN MY VAN EVEN WITH THE VIN. THE REPRESENTATIVE SUGGESTED THAT I CONTACT A DEALER. I THEN CONTACTED A DEALER IN CLARKSVILLE INDIANA AND ASKED IF THEY COULD TELL ME WHAT AIRBAG INFLATOR WAS INSTALLED IN MY VEHICLE BASED UPON THE VIN. THE DEALER SAID NO. HONDA & THE DEALER BOTH CONFIRMED THAT THERE IS INADEQUATE PART TRACEABILITY IN THEIR VEHICLES. WITHOUT SUCH TRACEABILITY TO THE VIN, NO RECALL THAT IS CONDUCTED COULD ENSURE THAT ALL OF THE DEFECTIVE PARTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. LETTING THE MANUFACTURER DETERMINE HOW A RECALL IS CONDUCTED IS NOT IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE PUBLIC. MANUFACTURER NEGOTIATION AND BARGAINING WITH NHTSA CONCERNING RECALLS IS ALSO AN INADEQUATE PROCESS. IT LACKS TRANSPARENCY THAT THE PUBLIC DESERVES IN MATTERS THAT ARE RELATED TO LIFE AND DEATH SAFETY ISSUES. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD ALREADY CONDUCTED AIR BAG RECALL WORK ON MANY HONDA ODYSSEY VANS IN INDIANA (10 - 20). THIS CONTRADICTS THE SCOPE OF THE CURRENT RECALL LISTED ON HONDA'S WEB SITE AND CALLS INTO QUESTION THE HONESTY OF THE ENTIRE PROCESS. THE DEALER OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. WHEN A MANUFACTURING SAFETY RELATED DEFECT AS SERIOUS AS THE HONDA ISSUE ARISES, THE PUBLIC DESERVES TO HAVE THEIR INTERESTS PLACED AHEAD OF THE PROFITS OF ANY MANUFACTURER OR DEALER. THE CONFUSION AROUND THIS ISSUE AND THE LACK OF TRANSPARENCY ALSO CASTS A SHADOW UPON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ENTIRE REGULATORY SYSTEM. *TR
I CONTACTED ONE HONDA DEALER FOR AIR BAG REPLACEMENT. THE DEALER REPLACED THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE INFLATER AND ORDERED THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE INFLATER FOR MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY EX-L. WHEN I ASKED THE DEALER ABOUT THE STATUS OF THE ORDER FOR FRONT PASSENGER SIDE INFLATER, DEALER RESPONDED "DO NOT UNDERSTAND MY QUESTION". I TRIED TO CONTACT WWW.HONDA.COM. SRS UNIT IS NOT FUNCTIONING. WE HAVE A LETTER THAT STATES THAT HONDA WILL REPLACE THE SRS UNIT BY MID SUMMER 2015. NEITHER OUR DEALER NOR HONDA KNOWS WHEN THE PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE. IT IS WELL PAST MID SUMMER. DASH LIGHT STAYS ON REGARDLESS OF VEHICLE BEING STATIONARY OR IN MOTION. THE REPAIR NEEDS TO INCLUDE THE SRS UNIT AND THE DASH LIGHT.
LIKE MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE 2003 ODYSSEY, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED A TRANSMISSION FAILURE. LIKE OTHERS, OUR VAN HAS HAD THE ORIGINAL RECALL NOTICE WORK PERFORMED (HONDA RECALL NUMBER 'P30' IN EARLY 2004, AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT), AND YET AT A RELATIVELY LOW 125,000 MILES THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT IN NOV '14, AS CONFIRMED BY A LOCAL HONDA DEALER. HONDA STATED THAT, SINCE THE PREVIOUS WORK HAS BEEN DONE UNDER RECALL, THEY ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY MORE WORK TO BE PERFORMED. MY COMPLAINT IS THIS: IF SO MANY OTHER '02-'04 ODYSSEY OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, IT IS OBVIOUS THAT HONDA DID NOT PROPERLY CORRECT THEIR EARLIER MISTAKE, AND THEY SHOULD PONY UP TO FIX THE TRANSMISSIONS, OR REIMBURSE OWNERS WHO ALREADY HAD THE WORK PERFORMED. MY REQUEST: NHTSA PLACE PRESSURE ON AMERICAN HONDA TO DO THE RIGHT THING, AND OWN UP MONETARILY OR SERVICE-WISE TO MYSELF AND THE THOUSANDS OF OTHER OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD/ARE HAVING/WILL HAVE THESE ISSUES. *JS

THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A CONCUSSION THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION AND THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE SUSTAINED UNKNOWN INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 168,000.

THE DEALER SCHEDULED SEVERAL APPOINTMENTS; HOWEVER, THEY INDICATED EACH TIME THAT THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE FOR LONGER THAN SIXTY DAYS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
I PAID $9,998.48 FOR MY ODYSSEY. I BOUGHT IT USED. I WAS TOLD THAT ALL THE MAINTENANCE WAS UP TO DATE AND THEY SHOWED ME THE PAPER WORK INDICATING THAT AS WELL. I ALSO TOOK THE VAN TO A SHOP TO BE SURE THAT ALL THE MAINTENANCE WAS UP TO DATE. I BOUGHT A 5YR/100,000 MILE WARRANTY FROM THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT THE VAN AS WELL, JUST TO BE SURE THAT IF ANYTHING WAS TO HAPPEN I WOULD BE COVERED. I PUT LESS THAN 40,000 MILES ON MY VAN WHEN IT LEFT ME SITTING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY WITH MY THREE KIDS IN THE VAN ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK. I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHEN MY VAN STARTED ACTING CRAZY. I WAS DRIVING AND THE RPMS WOULD GO FROM 2 TO 5 AND THE VAN WOULD SLOW DOWN. IT KEPT DOING THIS, WHEN SUDDENLY I WAS AT A FULL STOP. I HAD THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE AND WAS PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL BUT THE ONLY THING THAT MOVED WAS THE RPMS. THE VAN WOULD NOT MOVE AT ALL.I HAVE ONLY HAD MY VAN FOR 2.5 YEARS. I KEEP ALL THE MAINTENANCE UP TO DATE AND TOOK VERY GOOD CARE OF MY VAN. NOW THIS VAN THAT I PAID DEARLY FOR IS SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY AND WILL NOT MOVE. PHONED THE HONDA TELEPHONE NUMBER LISTED ON A DOCUMENT FROM HONDA'S WEB SITE ENTITLED "A MESSAGE TO OUR CUSTOMERS ABOUT AIRBAG SAFETY" I PROVIDED ALL OF THE REQUESTED INFORMATION AND ASKED THE HONDA REPRESENTATIVE IF MY VEHICLE HAD A "TAKATA" AIRBAG INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE. THE HONDA REPRESENTATIVE SAID THAT THIS INFORMATION WAS NOT ACCESSIBLE TO THEM. I TOLD THE HONDA REP THAT I WAS CONCERNED BECAUSE THE PRIMARY DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE WAS OF SMALL STATURE, WHICH INFLUENCES THE SEAT POSITIONING, AND THEREFORE I WANTED TO CONFIRM IF A "TAKATA" AIRBAG WAS INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE. MY WIFE SUFFERED A LARGE CONTUSION, BURN AND HEMATOMA OF THE LEFT ARM WHICH HAS BEEN VERY PAINFUL REQUIRING HER TO VISIT HER PHYSICIAN. WE CONTACTED THE LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP (RICK HENDRICKS HONDA) WHO TOLD MY WIFE THAT WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE AIRBAGS WAS IMPOSSIBLE WITHOUT A COLLISION AND STATED THERE WAS NO RECALL REGARDING AIRBAGS FOR THIS CAR. WE CONTACTED THE NATIONAL HONDA CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER WHO ASSIGNED US A CASE MANAGER. WE FOUND OUT ON OUR OWN THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE AIRBAG SENSOR BECAUSE OF THIS VERY ISSUE (SPONTANIOUS AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT). WE WERE NEVER CONTACTED BY HONDA ABOUT THE RECALL. OUR ODYSSEY HAS ALWAYS SHIFTED A LITTLE ROUGH, BUT I ATTRIBUTED THAT TO ITS AGE BUT ON 7/18/14 WE WERE ON GROCERY STORE VISIT AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, TCS LIGHT, AND MAINTENANCE REQUIRED LIGHT ALL CAME ON. WE TOOK IT TO LOCAL MECHANIC TO GET THE CODES READ AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM, BUT IT WAS DRIVING FINE SO I KEPT GOING AND HAD OUR NORMAL MECHANIC TAKE A LOOK AT IT ABOUT A WEEK LATER. HE TOO SAID IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM, AND THAT WE SHOULDN'T NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION, SO TAKE IT TO HONDA AND GET THEM TO LOOK AT IT. THE VEHICLE HAS A DOCUMENTED HISTORY (BY THE DEALER AND PERSONAL RECEIPTS) OF BEING SERVICED MULTIPLE TIMES DURING THAT PERIOD AT THE HONDA DEALER WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW (SINGLE OWNER). ON 2014-07-18, THE DEALER CONFIRMED THE RECALL HAD NOT BEEN PERFORMED, THEN INFORMED ME THEY ARE UNABLE TO PERFORM THE RECALL. I OPENED A CASE WITH HONDA AMERICA, WHO OVER THE COURSE OF 4 WEEKS, FIRST INDICATED THAT THE ISSUE I DESCRIBED (SINCE OWNING THE VEHICLE, SHIFTING FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR WOULD "STUTTER") WAS NOT RELATED, THEREFORE THE RECALL WOULD NOT BE PERFORMED. I REPLIED THE RECALL IS NOT CONDITIONAL TO THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCE, AND MUST BE PERFORMED. HONDA AMERICA THEN REPLIED THE TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN REPLACED, AND WAS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. AFTER MORE THAN A WEEK, THE DEALER AGREED TO PROVIDE THE SERIAL NUMBER OF THE TRANSMISSION, CONFIRMING IT WAS THE ORIGINAL HONDA PART. THE MINIVAN WAS BEING DRIVEN AT ABOUT 30MPH WHEN THE IDLE SUDDENLY JUMPED TO 3500 RPM. THE BRAKE HAD TO BE APPLIED TO KEEP THE CAR FROM DANGEROUSLY ACCELERATING. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO PULL THE MINIVAN INTO A GAS STATION. THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF THEN BACK ON A FEW MINUTES LATER. THE MINIVAN IMMEDIATELY IDLED AT 3500 RPM AGAIN. AFTER LETTING THE VEHICLE SIT TURNED OFF FOR 20 MINUTES, IT WAS TURNED ON AND SHOWED NO FURTHER PROBLEMS. IN THE PAST TWO YEARS THERE HAVE BEEN THREE SIMILAR INCIDENTS WITH THIS VEHICLE. OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE MAY BE A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR SINCE IT HAS ALWAYS HAPPENED IN A TEMPERATURE OF 80+ DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. AFTER LETTING THE CAR SIT FOR 10-20 MINUTES, THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY. THE LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP INVESTIGATED THE PROBLEM, BUT FOUND NO COMPUTER CODES OR OTHER SIGNS OF PROBLEMS. MANUFACTURER LISTS THE TRANSMISSION AS HAVING BEEN REPLACED, BUT THE MILEAGE IS STILL WAY LOW FOR HAVING HAD TWO TRANSMISSIONS. AM LOOKING AT INSTALLING A REBUILT ONE. DRIVING APPROX. 75 MPH, ON I-35 KANSAS, ENGINE STARTED REVVING TO 5,500 RPM, VAN STARTED SLOWING. SEMIS WERE BEHIND AND AROUND HONKING HORNS. PULLED OFF TO SIDE OF ROAD, STILL DANGEROUS AREA. HAD TO GET TOWED 35 MILES TO SERVICE STATION, SAID TRANSMISSION FAILED. REPAIR $ 4,100.00. *TR
I HAD THE SEAT HEATER ON, DRIVER'S SIDE FOR APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES. THE HEATER OFTEN GETS EXTREMELY HOT, SO I DID NOT THINK ANYTHING WAS DIFFERENT. HOWEVER LATER UPON EXAMINING MY BACK IN THE MIRROR, I HAD A HUGE BURN ON MY BACK THAT LOOKED LIKE I HAD LAID DOWN ON A BBQ GRILL. THERE WERE VERTICAL LINES WHERE THE SEAT HEATER HAD BURNED ME, INTERRUPTED BY SECTIONS WHERE THE CUSHION IS UPHOLSTERED, AND NOT TOUCHING MY BACK. THE BURN IS APPROXIMATELY 12 INCHES LONG AND 8 INCHES ACROSS. *JS

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
