I was in a motor vehicle accident, and when the airbags deployed. A woman, who leaned into the passenger side of my vehicle to see if I was hurt, said she could smell something burning and saw the sleeve of sweatshirt jacket on fire. Had she not checked on me, the sleeve of my sweatshirt may have burned all the way up my arm. As I only have use of the arm that caught fire The vehicle is at a body shop, waiting for insurance issues to be worked out. I’d never had an opportunity/reason for the airbags to ever be looked at.
Dear NHTSA Representative, I am writing to formally express my concern regarding the failure of Honda to notify me of a safety recall related to my vehicle, as required by 49 U.S.C. § 30119. As a current owner of the vehicle in question, I was never informed of the recall despite actively driving the car with my children, unknowingly putting our safety at risk. According to the law, manufacturers are obligated to obtain up-to-date owner information from state DMVs and notify all registered owners of safety defects or noncompliance issues. This lack of notification not only violates the legal requirements but also leaves me deeply concerned about how such an oversight occurred. As a consumer, I expect manufacturers to prioritize safety and follow mandated processes to ensure proper communication. I kindly request that you: Investigate why I was not notified of the recall in accordance with federal law. Take appropriate action to ensure no other current owners face similar risks. Provide a formal response outlining the steps being taken to resolve this issue. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust that you will treat this situation with the seriousness it warrants and look forward to hearing back from you promptly. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] VIN: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The vehicle had been repaired for the exterior damage, however the air bag failure was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 81,000.
I came to a stop at the stop sign and dropped off the my kids for PE at a local church. After the stop sign I went left going slowly because of kids in the area. I then went around a dark grey minivan that was pulled over on my right side of the road letting her kids out for PE. I then proceeded to take another left. I was pulling into the first parking space close to the PE field, with a fully turned steering wheel, as in doing a U turn. Since I was going slow my right foot was lightly pressing the brake. My minivan was in the parking spot and I was creeping closer to the concrete parking stop with my right foot pressing more down on the brake so I can come to a complete stop. I was about to place the car in park when the engine revved, the car jerked, it accelerated sending me up and over the curb and into the grassy median in front of the parking space and into a tree. The coaches and one other person came running to assist me since I was in shock. There was smoke coming out of the engine so I placed the minivan in park and shut the engine off. The airbags did not deploy.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED INADVERTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE AIR BAG MAY HAVE DEPLOYED DUE TO A PREVIOUS CRASH THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 12,060.
THE SEATBELTS' MECHANISM THAT REQUIRES THE SEATBELT TO BE FULLY RETRACTED BEFORE IT CAN BE PULLED OUT AGAIN IS ULTRA SENSITIVE. ALMOST EVERY OTHER TIME MY CHILDREN ATTEMPT TO BUCKLE THE SEATBELT, THIS MECHANISM IS ACTIVATED AND I HAVE TO PULL THE BELT OUT OF THE BOOSTER SEAT, REMOVE THE BOOSTER, ALLOW THE BELT TO FULLY RETRACT THEN REINSTALL THE BOOSTER AND THEN ATTEMPT TO BUCKLE. BEYOND A TOTAL ANNOYANCE, I NEVER IMAGINED THIS PROBLEM WOULD ENDANGER MY CHILDREN. ON JULY 10TH, MY SON ATTEMPTED TO BUCKLE HIS SEATBELT, BUT BECAME ENTRAPPED WHEN THE SEATBELT MECHANISM ENGAGED AND CONTINUED TO TIGHTEN AROUND HIS 40 LB BODY TRAPPING HIM IN HIS BOOSTER. I HAVE A PHOTO FOR REVIEW. IT WAS SO TIGHT WE ALMOST HAD TO CUT THE SEATBELT TO FREE HIM. WE WERE BARELY ABLE TO SLIDE HIM UNDER. THERE IS NO MANUAL RELEASE MECHANISM. THE BELT MUST BE FULLY RETRACTED TO RELEASE IT. THIS IS ALARMING AND DANGEROUS, ESPECIALLY IN CONJUNCTION WITH BOOSTER SEAT USE. THE BOOSTER SEAT PREVENTS THE SEAT BELT FROM FULLY RETRACTING. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR THE PHOTO. *TR
CHILD OPERATED BUTTON TOO CLOSE AUTOMATIC REAR PASSENGER DOOR AND REACHED BEHIND FOR SEAT BELT. IT WAS DARK AND THE CHILD WAS FEELING AROUND FOR THE BELT, WHEN THE DOOR CLOSED ON CHILD'S HAND AND CRUSHED FINGERS. THIS WAS IN THE REAR PART OF THE DOOR, NEXT TO WHERE THE SEAT BELT ANCHOR IS. CHILD WAS SCREAMING AND PARENT OPERATED DRIVER SIDE DOOR OPEN BUTTON TO RELEASE HAND. FINGERS ARE BADLY BRUISED. THERE IS NO WARNING THAT FINGERS CAN GET CAUGHT IN THE REAR, SO IT WAS UNEXPECTED. THERE IS ALSO NO AUTOMATIC RELEASE SIMILAR TO THAT WHEN AN OBSTRUCTION IS ENCOUNTERED IN THE FRONT PART OF THE DOOR. *TR
