WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE ENGINE DIED, LOST POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES (LOST VACUUM TO BOOSTER.) THE #1 INTAKE LIFTER BUTTON POPPED OUT AND THE CAM LOBE HAMMERED THE LIFTER AND VALVE INTO THE #1 CYLINDER CAUSING CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. ENGINE OIL WAS IN MID RANGE AND HAD ~2000K ON ENGINE OIL CHANGE. NO FLUID MIXING OCCURRED PRIOR TO OR AFTER THE INCIDENT. WHEN VALVE WAS PUSHED INTO THE CYLINDER IT WAS BENT, THE LOCKING UP OF THE CAM ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE ENGINE CAUSED THE WATER PUMP TO BE BROKEN BENDING THE IDLER PULLEY DOWN DUMPING ANTIFREEZE OUT ONTO THE ROAD. THE FUEL TANK SHIELD FOR MY 2001 HONDA PASSPORT IS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT. UPON RESEARCHING THE SITUATION I HAVE ENCOUNTERED QUITE A FEW PEOPLE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM. I AM SCARED TO EVEN DRIVE THE VEHICLE AS THIS SHIELD IS "BARELY" HOLDING THE TANK UP AND COULD FAIL AT ANY MOMENT THUS DROPPING THE TANK. *TR
THIS MODEL 2001 HONDA PASSPORT HAS A HISTORY OF FRAME RUST. THERE WAS ONE RECALL 2010 BUT IT DID NOT ADDRESS TANK SHIELD RUST - ONLY REAR AXLE PARTS. THE PASSPORT HAS 72373 MILES AND THE HONDA DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE FOR A REPORT REQUESTED BY HONDA MOTORS. ****AT THIS POINT I DO NOT KNOW IF THE GAS TANK IS GOING TO FALL OUT.**** *TR
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL MUST BE DEPRESSED. THE ENGINE ALSO STOPS WHEN DECREASING THE SPEED. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY AND IGNITION SENSOR, AS WELL AS, REPROGRAMMED THE COMPUTER. THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. THE DEALERSHIP IS GOING TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP NEXT.

CONSUMER NEEDED TO REFILL THE FUEL TANK EVERY 60 MILES. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, AND THEY REPLACED THE FUEL SYSTEM PUMP WHICH WAS DEFECTIVE. AFTERWARDS, GAS FUMES WERE LEAKING. *AK
