Defective Keyless Access Unit Car will completely lose power Honda dealer confirmed defective keyless access unit Various problems experienced : a) Car is completely disabled b) Main Battery drained c) Flashing External Lights d) Flashing Dashboard cluster lights and indicators e) Anti Theft security Alarm Horn will sound f) Defective Hood Latch g) Windshield Wipers operational compromised
A connecting rod bearing in the engine of my 2016 Honda Pilot seized while driving on the highway during acceleration while passing a vehicle, causing a complete failure of my engine. The vehicle began to de-accelerate as I was returning to the right lane and the engine light started flashing. I was able to make it onto the shoulder of the highway before all ability to accelerate was gone. The engine was making a kind of clanky sound as I turned the engine off. The vehicle is available for inspection and I would be happy to let it be looked at. Considering the vehicle had a complete engine failure on a fast moving major highway, this put myself and other drivers at risk of a major crash and possible fatalities. I was only able to avoid this due to a large shoulder being available on the stretch of highway I was on. The vehicle was towed to our long term mechanic who confirmed that the connecting rod seized causing catastrophic failure of the engine. The engine needs replaced and the estimate is $10,900. There was no warnings or issues prior to the engine failure. The flashing engine light occurred at the same time as the failure was happening. The vehicle had recently been in for its oil change with the dealer. This is the same issue that a recall has been issued for in 2016 Honda Pilots but my VIN is not included in the recall.
The contact owns a 2016 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, there was an abnormal clunking sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact observed a loud banging sound coming from the same area and the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road and turned off. The vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the connecting rod had gone through the oil pan, and the engine was blown. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Engine is making a knocking noise at startup, continues when accelerating. This was confirmed by the dealer who cited "engine has lower end rod knock. These are the same symptoms as NHTSA Recall #23v-751. I opened a case with Honda but they said because my VIN was not included in the recall, they would not cover the cost of the repair. This is a known problem with the 2016 Honda Pilot and Honda is trying to get away with limiting the number of vehicles it will cover or wait until people's mileage is too high. It's just wait us out with this company.
On several occasions in 2024 1 - 2 months apart I have been stopped at a light in my 2016 Honda Pilot I have around 150,000 miles on it. The car will stall out and I can barely make it to the side of the road. All the dashboard lights come on Vehicle Stability Assist Problem, Power Steering System Problem, Emissions System Problem, Road Departure Mitigation System Problem, Trailer Stability Assist Problem, Hill Start Assist Problem. I had the Catalytic Converters changed about 2 months ago at a cost of $3,000 and this is still happening. Once the battery is disconnected the codes go away and the car drives fine for a while, but not this last time. We had AAA come out and put a new battery, they AAA service drove off, I pulled out 3 feet and the car cut off again and all the lights came back on and the car would not move.
I purchased this vehicle a little less than two months ago… this vehicle is babied and I make sure to stay on top of everything possible as it’s a primary transportation to bring my toddler to his many appointments. While operating on the highway, everything was smooth sailing as expected, until I heard a noise. I glanced in the rear view mirror to see a part flying off of the car and colliding with the vehicle behind me. I couldn’t locate where the item came from. Today, I went to pick my son up from preschool and noticed the entire piece on the roof was hanging outward, right off and over the side of the vehicle. Had I not noticed, it could’ve caused further danger to others. I hopped up to look at my roof to realize the rear trim is the piece that flew off, and the following straight part is what was now dangling over the side. On top of everything else, on the same side, the trim along the side my of windshield is upraised and I am absolutely torn. How dangerously this could’ve ended had I not noticed. I’ve seen other pilot-owners discuss how their trim pieces have caused trouble and even further dented some trunks. This needs to be brought to attention, I didn’t spend $$,$$$ on a vehicle that is not safe.
This issue occurred [XXX]. The fuel door would not open when we were at the gas station to fill up. We opened the side panel inside the back of the vehicle and tried to open using the emergency lever but that did not work either. Had to take to our local Honda dealer, Swickard of Thousand Oaks in Thousand Oaks, California. Our vehicle had only 59,088 miles when this stopped working. On the service order from our dealer In the description of the concern it states that after inspecting the fuel door actuator, fuel door cable and the fuel door grommet it was found that the cable was kinked, causing the plastic grommet to break apart. From the description from the dealer it sounds like the cable was installed incorrectly when the vehicle was made causing the failure. We were fortunate that we were not traveling and not been near a dealer or mechanic when this issue occurred. Car stalled at intersection due to start/stop feature. Engine did not restart when my wife removed her foot from the brake pedal and went to press the gas pedal. Engine stalled. After turning the car completely off it would start back up.
My engine failed at 133,000 miles and had to be replaced. I have owned Hondas for many years and found them to be very reliable vehicles. No accident was involved but I was very surprised that the engine failed so early with no apparent causes. I understand that there have been many issues with engines with 2016 Pilots so I wanted to report my problem in case there is a manufacturing issue that needs to be corrected for safety issues.
-Defective Keyless Access Unit (dealer kept old unit) -My car completely lost power -Honda dealer confirmed defective keyless access unit -Car not inspected by others, except for AAA who had to replace my battery 2 times due to drainage of power -The problems experienced were that the car start would be hit or miss and then complete drainage of battery happened
Honda pilot has multiple warning lights problem. I am an extremely normal and safe driver. However, the warning sign turns on and off again and again. parking collision Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Emissions System Problem This happens frequently when turning on the engine or while driving. Even there have been no accidents, no electrical changes, and even the battery was recently replaced. so I went to an auto shop and had it repaired. The car shop also said that there are too many Honda cars with this symptom. However, even after several days, the same symptoms are recurring. Sometimes it's on and sometimes it's off and it's a mess. It's all directly related to safety, so I feel very stressed every time I drive. If a safety warning light comes on while driving, the driver becomes anxious and doubts safety. I google the forum [XXX] ) and found that there were so many drivers experiencing the same symptoms as me, and they were all seriously concerned and threatened about safety. This symptom has continued since this spring. It's stressful every time I turn on the engine. I don't understand why a car that I paid many dollars for has such safety issues. We respectfully request an official problem resolution and recall from Honda. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Car electric system went down while driving and stopped in middle of the road. It happened sometimes before, usually when the car stops at the red light. All the warning light was turn on when that happen and it took a lot of try to restart the car. This time the car cannot turn on so I have to tow it to my mechanic. The mechanic checked everything including the alternator, battery, starter and told me that the problem is actually in the fuel pumps. I got the fuel pumps replaced and have not had the same issue since then. The mechanic said several Honda model had that issue. I contacted Honda as I see there is a recall on the same year model but Honda told me the VIN number isn't on their list, but I think the recall should cover my vehicle since the problem description and year model is matching.
Transmission slip/jerk/clunk when going above 2 RPMs. This has happened before 3 times with the first time happening in 2019, then 2022 and then again on [XXX], 2024. I've taking it to the dealer all 3 times and they performed a transmission fluid flush since apparently the transmission fluid gets too hot and needs to be flushed every so often. This last time they told me I needed a new torque converter ($5,500) to fix the issue. This a huge safety issue especially when driving in the highway as the cars loses speed and begins to jerk. I see similar issues with the 2017-2019 models [XXX] ) which sound the same as to what's happening to the 2016 models. There are a ton of complaints on the web for 2016 Pilot which the NHTSA should take into consideration. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
To Whom It May Concern, I am submitting this complaint to report ongoing engine and emissions system problems with my 2016 Honda Pilot that raise serious safety concerns and may be related to a broader defect currently under investigation. I purchased this vehicle from a dealership in April of 2024 and the issues began shortly afterward at approximately 67,000 miles. The vehicle currently has approximately 74,600 miles and has received regular oil changes and routine maintenance. The vehicle has repeatedly displayed emissions system warning messages and engine fault codes. It has experienced persistent engine misfiring even after a mechanic performed repairs on cylinder 1. In addition, the vehicle exhibits rough engine shaking during driving and idling, engine stalling, and rough or delayed gear changes continuously since 2024. Despite attempted repairs, the problems continue to occur to present. The stalling, misfiring, and unstable engine operation create a potential safety risk, particularly while driving at speed or in traffic. The rough shifting and loss of smooth power delivery further impact safe vehicle operation. Given the relatively low mileage, proper maintenance, and the recurrence of these symptoms, this does not appear to be normal wear and tear. I am aware that similar engine-related complaints have been reported by other owners of 2016 Honda Pilot vehicles and that this model year is included in an ongoing federal investigation into potential engine defects. I am requesting that this complaint be reviewed as part of that investigation and considered for further action, including possible recall or service remedy, to address the safety risks posed by these engine and emissions system failures. Vehicle Information: Make/Model: 2016 Honda Pilot Mileage: Approximately 74,600 miles VIN: [XXX] Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I am writing about my 2016 Honda Pilot (VIN [XXX] ). The car broke down in the middle of the road on [XXX], with the engine seizing and not able to start again. The car has only 134k miles and has had all of the recommended maintenances since we bought the vehicle Certified Used from Honda in 2017. There were no lights, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The car had an oil change the week prior to this incident at a Honda dealership, and the car's inspection came back showing no repair needs or problems. We have all of the service records for this vehicle. The car has been towed to the Honda dealership in Thousand Oaks, CA. The dealership has indicated the engine requires replacement due to the number 2 piston not being able to move likely due to the crankshaft failing. This damage has caused a catastrophic failure to the engine, requiring full engine replacement. This seems to fit with a current recall for other 2016 Honda Pilots resulting from a manufacturing defect in the engine's crankshaft, despite our VIN not being captured in that recall. The safety of my 1.5 year and nanny were put at risk due to the car stopping in the middle of the intersection and not being able to start again. From a reading of others' accounts online, it appears that this problem is happening to other people with the same vehicle and their VIN is falling outside of Honda's current recall. The contact owns a 2016 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while driving at 35 MPH, the roof railing trim detached from the vehicle. The contact recovered the trim from the roadway. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who informed the contact that the replacement was not covered. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was related to Technical Service Bulletin: 18-040. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.
The digital speedometer on the gauge cluster will sporadically stop working. Traveling at highway speeds with no idea of the vehicle speed presents a hazard for driver and passengers when approaching turns in the road and not knowing your speed. Valley Honda Naperville, IL checked the vehicle and could find no issue. A video of the issue was shared with Valley Honda. The speedometer flashes on and off without warning and sometimes remains off for extended periods of time. No warning lights or messages and the service center stated that no error codes were stored in the on board computer. Vehicle is available for inspection and a video documented the issue is also available upon request. The date listed below is just one of several dates when the problem occured.
Through diagnostic at Honda Dealership, the #5 bearing failed causing engine damage (crank shaft and connecting rod). This pilot year is included in the current Part 573 Safety Recall Report, however this particular VIN is not currently included.
Car started surging while driving in rush hour traffic was very scary and almost caused me to be rear ended at a high speed. It cost 3200.to repair and when I spoke to the dealer they said they were under recall for all models 2017-2024 and it has been an ongoing issue since 2014 I think they should pay to fix it not just let us eat it on the repair because the vehicle is older not that old and it’s a safety issue
The Honda stop-start system in this vehicle has a flaw. On this day the engine shut down as normal at a light, but failed to start when the foot was removed from the brake. The engine sputtered and shut back off. This should be a problem if a restart could have been attempted but this failure was so severe that the car had to be put in park and shut off completely. Almost like a reboot of the computer. Once the car was shut off and then powered up again the car could be started and move under it's own power. Even thought I was quick to turn on hazard flashers, cars behind me became angry at the inconvenience, honking and swerving to get around me when the light was green. Honda needs to make a way to attempt to restart after an unsuccessful attempt by the auto start system. The engine has run fine since the event so no issues with the engine can be found. It had to be something minor that prevented the successful firing of the engine.
Brought my 2016 Honda Pilot (71k miles) to dealer due to loud knocking noise and dealer confirmed rod bearing failure on cylinder 6 caused the issue and ruined the connecting rod and also the crankshaft. Dealer said the VIN wasn't part of the recall however the car's production date is [XXX] which falls under the Production dates listed in here: [XXX] Have to pay for a replacement engine to be put in. Honda should absolutely cover this due to the defect and recall. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Rod bearing and crankshaft failure. Whole engine needs to be replaced. There is a recall on 2016 Honda Pilot engines but apparently this car with this VIN is not covered. Honda is lying. I only have 70000 miles and obviously, my engine developed the same exact problem as the recalled 2016 pilots.
On [XXX] I noticed a knocking noise coming from the engine of my 2016 Honda Pilot so I made an appointment with Pacific Honda in San Diego the next day for a diagnostics test. The following day they called me and said that the technician was able to replicate the issue and it was a rod knock and I would need a new engine. I was quoted $10,725.04 for the repair. I declined the service because I could not afford an almost $11,000 bill all while still making payments on the car. I was still able to drive it home and after a little bit more research I found an open recall for 2016 Honda Pilots describing the same exact issue my car was diagnosed with as well as other years and similar model vehicles (Ridgeline & Odyssey). I read the potential dangers of this issue and finding out that it could cause the engine to stall while driving increasing risks of a crash or potentially catching fire. After reading that I started to feel overwhelmed and afraid that if I had continued to drive this car with my 3 year old son in the back and the engine seized or caught on fire on the freeway on our way to daycare.. I was relieved I was able to catch this issue before any of that could happen. No warning lamps or any other type of message except a knock coming from the engine bay to warn me of any issues displayed on the dash. I initially thought this was an overlook by the dealer and they must have not seen it but after calling them back I was told my specific 2016 Honda Pilot was not covered under that recall and it needed a specific VIN/Manufacturer date. Even though it was diagnosed with the same issue on the recall. I do not feel safe driving in this vehicle knowing that the engine could fail causing a crash at any moment and knowing that there is an open recall attached to it, not having a solution from Honda other than my VIN being from a wrong date is very disappointing. Message is showing in instrumental panel KEYLESS START SYSTEM PROBLEM. I checked on line found Honda have found this problem with 2016 Honda Pilots. When I called Honda Woodbridge, VA dealer about it she (Customer Service agent) took my Vin and said no there is no recall. On line I found Honda Service Bulletin they do have recall. I am including Pic of vehicle and also Service Bulletin about it. Honda Dealers Should have this information.

Dealership involved is Lamacchia Honda at 932 Genesee St, Syracuse, NY 13204. They have the failed engine and vehicle currently. The engine failed rapidly, and could have caused a unexpected stall and made the vehicle hard to control, had it not happened while the vehicle was parked. The issue was noticed in early March, approximately 116,200 miles on the odometer, with a small knocking noise not noticeable under all conditions. Once the knock noise was discovered, the vehicle was driven approximately 100 miles to return home. The next morning the car was started, in order to identify the noise. The engine was running for 4-5 seconds before the knock became rapidly worse, and a low oil level warning was displayed. I immediately shut down the car, and confirmed that the engine oil level was full. After this, I drained 1 liter of engine oil for analysis (from Blackstone Laboratories), and parked the vehicle until it could be towed to Lamacchia Honda. After the engine was disassembled, the dealership stated that the #1 rod bearing and crankshaft journal were damaged. No repairs have been completed yet. Dealership has suggested a long block or engine replacement will be required. I believe this incident is related to NHTSA recall No. [XXX} Attached is the invoice from the dealer. Car engine started knocking a few days ago and yesterday the engine light came on and the car started loosing power even stalling at one point driving. Looks like a connecting rod bearing on bank 2 can be heard clearly. I understand a service bulletin just came out yesterday for this same issue on my year vehicle but I don't see the vin on the list and it should be added to list having the same exact problem. Thank you
Sudden engine knocking noise. Mechanic said the rod bearing is going out.
Our Honda pilot has always had its routine maintenance and been kept in a garage. One day as we started it, the car made a weird noise and before we could get it back home the engine light was flashing red. We immediately shut it off and upon getting it towed to the dealership they took it apart to find the problem, didn’t really give us a conclusive answer and was told it now seized up completely and needs a new motor. I'm wondering if this is a common problem since I've had multiple Hondas in the past and ran them each for over 200,000 miles without anything close to this happening.
I own a 2016 Honda Pilot Elite and I was driving it in March of 2024 when my engine started making a low ticking sound, after about 2 weeks it gradually got louder and louder. It felt like it didn't want to accelerate, meaning it took more force down on the pedal to get it to drive. On the last drive in it the engine shifted so hard it shook the whole vehicle feeling as if I was hit from behind. Once I got it home I parked it and have not drove it since March of 2024.
Our 2016 Pilot errored while driving on the highway at 75mph and went to half power. This happened multiple times; resulting in a dangerous situation. After getting it towed to a Honda dealer, it was discovered that there was a defect of the engine crankshaft. This part needed to be replaced at our cost.
1) First and most annoying is the start button displays code on the screen "keyless start system problem ". Its done it for about two three now. There is no recall for my VIN. 2) Back wheels brakes make very loud kicking noise when car put in reverse and moves in reverse. It started 4 years ago. I took it to dealership and they said breaks are fine and they don't know why its kicking. In cold weather break sensor displays warning "apply break before putting in park" while breaks are applied. So it can't sense that breaks are applied. 3)blue ray DVD player quit working years ago. 4) Transmission is jerking when switches to third gear. This car has 56000 miles. 5) Roof molding in the front came off while driving. The clips somehow broke and it flew away. This car has been parked in the garage during the day and driven carefully with all needed oil changes and one owner. It should not have this problems. 6) the tires fell apart when car was 4 years old with about 25000 miles on it. The dealership said they don't know why and its was not normal. The top of the tires pilled off in chanks.
After the most recent recall fix was applied, the keyless start system started acting up. It would start, but died after 1 second I have video of this happening. In this video, it fails twice and starts on the third attempt. 03/01
the engine has Rod knocking sound engine failure can cause an accident Had dealership verify and recommended a new motor No warning lights or messages about anything wrong
I was driving on the interstate last March of 2024. I have a Honda Pilot 2016. Im going 70 miles an hour or so and my engine just stalls and quits. So many alerts come up on my vehicle as well. Check engine lightTrailer Stability Assist Problem, Power Steering System EPS Problem, Trailer Stability Assist Problem, Hill Start Assist Problem, and others. I make it to the off ramp coasting this is a huge problem because I could have killed someone or someone could have killed me or provided Serious injury. I get it towed and I called the dealership and no recalls. I take it to my Mechanic and discover it was reading Code (P0087) The fuel pump not working at all. I had to replace it to drive the car. I am so livid as I see on the Honda Service Bulletin of a Safety Recall for 2016-2021 Pilot Fuel Pump Motor. This revision supersedes the previous recall of the Fuel Pump Motor from July 19th, 2024. I can see why their wasn't a recall when I checked. Cars from those years are now having this problem and should not be subject to certain VIN# on cars. I called Honda today 10-18-24 and was told this isn't covered.because my VIN wasn't in covered cars. How the heck does a VIN number cover or not cover you. Those years are what matter and my safety was at risk and could have proven fatal. Not warning was given it just happened as I going down the interstate 121 in Texas.Lucily I did not go over a high bridge which was another way to get home and one of the most dangerous interstates in the area I-25E. I could have flipped over the bridge and killed someone else going a descent speed. Im usually really careful on super high bridges cause they are scary. Getting stalled on that bridge is deadly. I'm really Upset over this and gave up my awesome Toyota 4Runner for a Honda Pilot and now this happens. I also stalled 3 to 4 other times after I turned on my hazards and restarted the car. it was 7pm and dark so it was quite scary my vehicle out of nowhere just quit on me.
The contact owns a 2016 Honda Pilot. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V751000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The contact owns a 2016 Honda Pilot. That contact stated while driving 35 MPH, multiple warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the gear shifter failed to move. The contact stated once the vehicle was stopped the transmission failed to shift. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed. The contact stated that several unknown repairs were performed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and the contact was referred to a local dealer for assistance. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE); however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 140,000.
While driving vehicle on freeway heard a loud knocking sound from engine, took vehicle to Honda dealership . Dealership said it was a rod bearing…
The contact owned a 2016 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving approximately 35-40 MPH and approaching the red traffic light, she depressed the brake pedal to come to a complete stop. The contact noticed smoke coming out of the cowl of the vehicle. The contact then turned on the AC and smoke came through the A/C vents. The contact opened the windows. The contact stated that the smoke became thicker and brownish while pulling into the parking lot of a nearby shopping center. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact parked and turned off the vehicle. The contact then noticed that there was a hole in the middle of the hood, and there was a flame coming through the hole. The contact stated that the hood and the windshield became engulfed in fire within 3 minutes even though it was raining. The fire department extinguished the fire, and police officers arrived at the scene, but the contact did not know whether a fire department report and a police report were filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot, awaiting to be totaled. The local dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 51,000.
2016 Honda Pilot EX-L Connecting Rod Bearing Failure. I am the original owner of this vehicle, which has around 98,000 miles on it and now has a serious rod knock. My vin is not covered by the current recall, but I believe it should be. It is unacceptable that a manufacturer fault should not be addressed. Since my car is out of warranty I am on the hook for many thousands of dollars, not to mention the diminished value of a poorly built vehicle.
