NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Honda Pilot. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Honda issued a recall on 12/18/2023 for the fuel pump that it acknowledges could cause the car to fail while driving, 23V-858. Over nine months later, parts are still not available to address this recall. That seems to exceed a reasonable timeframe to allow drivers to continue to drive cars that could critically malfunction.

My vehicle is equipped with a feature that turns it off at brakes stops and restarts when the gas is pushed (example - at a stop sign). Honda did a recall and replaced a part but this feature on my vehicle still stalls and doesn’t start instantaneously with the gas, causing a noticeable delay when I’m trying to go from a stoplight. Hondas remedy has been a button to turn this off - bit it must be turned off every single time the car is started and I’m afraid for my teenagers to take my 2019 Pilot because they may not remember the to do this. Honda at one point did turn this feature off on my vehicle but when I got a new battery put in, the computer reset and it is now active again. They informed me they now do not have the ability to turn off this feature due to a government legality over fuel efficiency so I feel very frustrated and disappointed.
Start/Stop malfunctioning. If activated engine stops and have to physically restart. This is dangerous because can happen in redlight, stop sign, or random. Rear suspension is rough, bumpy and unstable. Yesterday almost lost control going over rough spot in the freeway. Complained numerous times to dealer and opened case with Honda of America. They simply ignore the issue. Many people having the same problem.
The gas tank has a leak. This could result in a fire and is environmentally detrimental. Both a Honda dealer & and independent service center has verified this issue. This was discovered due to a check engine light.
Automatic braking system failure parallel issue that is same to the accord and other models with the emergency braking system which randomly activated and panic stops and sometimes without an traffic near to car and other times have almost caused catastrophic collisions on highway systems with divided medians causing system to activate.
Connecting rod bearing failure. Engine was making knocking noise noticeable under 2000 RPM. Engine could experience sudden loss of power if engine failed. Dealer inspected engine internals and found a spun connecting rod bearing, requiring engine short block to be replaced. Vehicle falls in the production date range stated on recall 573 for this exact issue, however Honda Corporate stated VIN doesn't match affected units.
My vehicle has completely shut-off numerous times after stopping at a stop light or stop sign while my idle stop option is on. I biught a new battery, which did not resolve the issue.
I have a 2019 Honda Pilot (VIN [XXX] ), little over 70,000 miles on it. In early December 2023, I started having problems with screening flashing in cycles every warning and failure message for the vehicle. I get a cylinder 4 misfire on my person code reader. Honda Metro in Indian Trail NC tells me this is fuel injectors, they are on national backorder with no guaranteed delivery AND it will cost me over $1200 to fix there. I asked if it was warrantied or recalled and was told no. Researching I found that the 2014-2018 fuel injectors were recalled. Also, found the 2014 -2020 were same injectors so not sure why the 2019 - 2020 are not covered by same recall. The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated after starting the vehicle, there was a chirping noise coming from the timing belt. No warning lights was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times. The first time, the dealer stated it was normal, the second time, the dealer replaced the serpentine belt, the last time, the dealer acknowledged the noise but stated they did not have a solution to fix the issue. The contact stated the vehicle was taken to another dealer who stated it was a known issue called the timing belt chirp. They also stated when replacing the timing belt, they install a part to prevent the noise as well as prevent wear and tear. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced Hondas Service Bulletin 16-054, which applied to the year make and model of the contact's vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, a case was opened and then closed. The approximate failure mileage was 106,000.
Rear cross-warning and back-up camera image is blurred by extreme colors which impairs visibility when viewing the info screen. This appears to be a common problem with the camera as reported by many other 2019 Honda Pilot owners. Vehicle is out of warranty (53,000 miles). Honda should issue a recall based on the current number of malfunctions reported on the [XXX] " website for this vehicle. My 2019 Honda Pilot is repeatedly having problems, when the vehicle is started and running, first thing in the morning. There is hard jerking when the vehicle is shifting on low speed (ex: from first to second to third gear). This happens repeatedly in the morning start, then doesn't occur again on that day. It reoccurs again, the next day. Have taken the vehicle to the Dealer Service, they notice the issue but are unable to find the root cause. There is no Error Code generated. I find the same issue is being faced many other Honda Pilot owners, refer the link [XXX] . There was an earlier TSB [XXX] and [XXX], but that is only applicable up to 2017 models. Need a resolution from Honda, as this is not only a nagging unresolved problem, but also a potential safety hazard. Details on this issue for the vehicle, can be found from Honda of Gainesville, Florida. Thanks INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
colorful, trippy images from rear camera. Based on my research it is happening for most of Honda 2019 Pilots. Most of the affected people reported thier problem in below website. Please take a look. This must be fixed by HONDA. Requesting you to help us. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
failed torque converter/software results in car surging during moderate acceleration. This is unsafe when vehicle will not accelerate properly under load. The problem was repaired by the dealer who indicated this issue to be a widespread problem with this car. There were no warning messages.
This complaint is regarding safety recall for 2019 Honda Pilot for "fuel pump impellers" (NHTSA Recall Number [XXX]). It was published in November 2023 but Honda dealers still don't have the parts available to do the repair. The Honda dealerships that I have called say that it likely won't be available for another 6 months. I use the car for business purposes and having an open safety recall on a car creates a significant liability issue for me. Please assist with pressuring Honda to quickly fix the safety recall issue. There are many instances where my wife Honda Pilot 2019 touring would shut off at a stop light and on high way with traffice and will not start back up. The whole car shuts off and there is a whole procedure to get the car back on. This has happened to my wife, my daugter and me several times, which is very dangerous situation.
In October 23, 2023, The Honda Pilot Touring 2019 activated the alarm system alone. When I attempted to stop the alarm the unit did not stop and start blinking. It displayed the codes keyless start system problems and auto engine idle system problem. The unit drained the battery. It was replaced by a new one and it showed the problem again in October 24, 2023. The unit turned ON alone the alarm, control panel motor fans and I was unable to turned Off the unit. The only way to turned Off the unit was disconnecting from batery. On October 24, 2023, the car was sent to the Honda dealer and the diagnostic was problem with the control module part 38320TG7A91. As of today I still waiting for repair due to part backorder. Neither the part is available in Honda part supplier in US. Why? It has been a part recall from supplier? Did Honda knows already of this part problem? I want to issue a safety complaint because the Honda Pilot turned On alone due to these problems (codes) described above while I was out of home. This must be investigated since the unit did not turned OFf unless battery is disconnected. In addition I have been waiting since October for repair while the unit is in a parking lot. I trusted in Honda when I adquired this car. Also, all maintenace have been provided by Honda dealer in Ponce, Puerto Rico. I never expected this type of problem in this car. A Case was opened and no response has been received yet. There has been many incidents reported on internet with the same problem in Honda Pilot. Is there is any additional information, please contact me.
All my dash warning lights started coming on for Adaptive Cruise Control, ABS, LKAS, Front Collision Mitigation, Road Departure Mitigation. They all came on at once. I took it to Honda and they said it’s a front camera issue and I’d need to pay $1800 to replace it. Researching it online, I’ve seen many Pilot owners that have had this same issue.
My 2019 Honda Pilot alignment pulls badly to the right while driving on any type of road surface. I have had the vehicle aligned numerous times and the car still pulls to the right. I have heard from other people friends of mine that own Pilots that they have this issue as well. Honda needs to look into this as it is a safety problem out on the road. The problem has been confirmed by my tire dealer and my mechanic the problem continues. No warning lights have ever appeared.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The local dealer was contacted, and it was confirmed that the part was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated that the vehicle hesitated to accelerate while depressing the accelerator pedal. Additionally, the vehicle failed to immediately start-up on several occasions. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 12,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
Auto Idle function stopped the engine while waiting to make a left hand turn on a busy street. When trying to make the left hand turn the engine was unable to restart resulting in engine warning lights as well as battery warning lights and a complete shutdown of the car and all systems. Warning lights only appeared when I took my foot off the break and pushed the gas pedal to reengage the engine and move. This left the vehicles lifeless and stranded in the middle of the street for a few minutes before I was able to restart the car after a few failed attempts to do so. This left me stranded in the middle of a busy multi lane street in San Diego with cars having to go around me back into traffic to get by. I have had other instances of stopping at lights where the auto idle stop function engaged and my entertainment system / radio / navigation system shut down until i turned off the car and restarted it completely later. The other instances did not have a failure to restart the engine. Honda has told me there is no current recall for the auto idle function and that I had a software update for this last visit prior to this latest incident occurring. They are also stating I can come have a full diagnostics run but it is no longer covered by warranty. I will be taking the car to Honda for a diagnostic but have read about ongoing issues with this feature and feel like i will be stuck with this ongoing issue. Currently manually turning off this function every time in the car now and have had no further issues since manually disabling for all trips.
The alarm sounded all through the night killing the battery leaving me stranded almost 500 miles from home. Took it to the Honda in Pensacola to be diagnosed only to be told they couldn’t get the part and had to pay a $80 fee on top of renting a car to use while out of town. Then had to leave a day early from our trip (losing money there) because we could not cut the car off without the alarm, lights, and inside going crazy. When we got back home the Honda here said it was the keyless access control unit and replaced it. After researching I have found the is a common issue with the Pilot.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V431000 (Back Over Prevention) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

1. Component: The backup camera screen is purple and green. It would be available for inspection. 2. Safety: It makes it very hard to see everything around the vehicle when backing up. This has been happening consistently for approximately one month every time we put the vehicle in reverse. 3. We have not taken the vehicle to the dealer for it, knowing they will charge for the diagnostics. 4. The vehicle has not been inspected by police, insurance, etc. 5. There are no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem. The issue first appeared in October 2023.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while his wife was at a red light, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was difficult to restart. The battery was drained and became inoperable. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken an independent mechanic who determined that the battery needed to be replaced. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
excessive vibration on driver's side mirror at highway speed, rendering mirror useless to check for adjacent cars
When my car is at a stop, the engine idles and will not restart. Sometimes, charging the battery will upstart the engine, while sometimes it will not start at all. We've had the battery checked several times, and the battery checks out fine. The car has an electric shift, and I can't place it into neutral to push the car tot he side. So, we wait in the midst of a heavily trafficked intersection until a tow truck comes. This has happened several times in heavy traffic and once in our driveway. After yesterday's incident, I asked my friend who has the same car to see if she has similar issues. She said YES! After bringing the car to the dealer numerous times, she turns off the idle engine everytime she drives, and she hasn't had the issue. I also researched on Google, and this seems to be a recurring problem for Honda cars with the same engine. This needs to be remedied as a global recall. My car is at the Firestone waiting for tomorrow to come, so I can call Honda dealership to remedy this problem. It won't start, even with a charge. We had the battery checked in July, 2023 when it last happened, and the battery is fine. This defect is a safety hazzard for its owners and passengers.
My 2019 Honda Pilot Touring (7 passenger) has a defect with the auto stop-start system that is a major (and scary!) safety concern. On a handful of occasions over the past couple of years, when stopped at a traffic light (and the auto stop-start feature engages) the engine will fair to restart. My wife has complained that this happened to her several times, and finally this week I was in the car to witness it for myself. The car went from drive to neutral ON ITS OWN, instruments began flashing, the "i" indicator came on, and we couldn't get the car back into drive. We had to turn the car all the way off and back on in order to get it back into drive. I took a picture of the dash and will upload it here. I've read online that this might be caused by a cold battery; however, this incident occurred on a warm September day in the southeastern US. Also, we've had the battery on this car replaced a couple of times (a whole other issue that puzzles me). This is scary and dangerous in the middle of a busy intersection! In fact, my wife now refuses to drive the car, so we've switched cars for the time being. We were going to give this car to our daughter in a few years when she can drive, but that's definitely not happening now....way too dangerous! I'm at a loss for what the next steps are and would really appreciate some guidance. I'm taking the car back to the dealership tomorrow for diagnostics, but in the past they've suggested they can't replicate it so it's not a problem. Ugh. Please help.
Back camera failure and shows image with color mixed. This creates an unsafe environment and its hard to recognize anything with this issue. This makes it unsafe for the driver who is backing up and to the people behind the car. Honda will not address it saying its not related to the cable recall NHTSA Recall #: 23V-431. I believe this cable issue actually fails the camera as well and Honda should address it as well. This issue looks like is not a random issue and there are lot of cars that are having this issue.
The MIL comes on with DTCs P0441 (EVAP System Purge Flow Malfunction) P04F1 (EVAP System Low Purge Flow. Detected). I replaced the purge flow valve and joint purge valve which resolved the issue. The reason I am writing is, the coding within the 2019 Pilot also threw an AWD System Problem MIL, but did not have a specific code associated via the OBD reader. It is a false reading that can cause more work to be done to the car than necessary. Once both purge valves were replaced, there are no MIL's present.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V431000 (Back Over Prevention). The contact stated that the part to do the recall repair was available however, after contacting multiple dealers, the contact was informed that only one vehicle per day would be serviced for the recall and the next available appointment was in July of 2024. The contact stated that the manufacturer and dealer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not yet made aware of the issue. The contact that while reversing, the backup camera screen was blank and created a visibility hazard for the driver. The failure mileage was 51,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
I purchased the car 6 days ago. Now the the engine light is on.
To address the General Guidelines questions, the responses are identified below: 1. Charging System problem appeared on dashboard. Took the vehicle for inspection 9/18/23. 2. Possible vehicle crash/death if stopped suddenly, highly possible 3. Yes, see uploaded 2nd file 4. No, the vehicle has not been inspected per entities noted above. 5. There appears to be hesitation in the vehicle operation. See 1st uploaded file as message appeared on dashboard. NOTE: On the dealership report, it appears the tech conducted tests of the components associated with the matter. Did he/she conduct a visual inspection of those components? I am scared of driving of vehicle because of the possibility of being stranded or crash or death to myself or others, as the reasons I am producing this report. I have made my family members aware of the problem and this report to you. Regards, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact's wife owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The owner received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The contact stated that on several occasions when the vehicle was started, while driving or while in reverse, the vehicle hesitated continuously. On one occasion while in reverse, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was able to be restarted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer however, the failure was not replicated. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 33,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while at a complete stop, the vehicle inadvertently shut off after releasing the brake pedal. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the starter was replaced twice; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was determined that the flywheel needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: PE22005 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 100,111.
Pulled to stop. Engine Auto-Stop shut down the engine. When I released the brake pedal the car did not restart. The display stated that I needed to shift the car out of drive before starting. I put the car in park, pressed the Car On/Off button to restart the car, and it restarted without issue. Shifted to Drive and car moved without issue. This has happened 2 times.
Brought vehicle to stop on a hill at a traffic light intersection. Auto Start/Stop activated, shutting engine off. When releasing the brake the vehicle did not restart. Placed foot on the accelerator, there was no response. The vehicle then started to drift backward down the hill toward other vehicles stopped at light. Slammed on the brakes. Had to restart the car manually with the push button starter switch. Vehicle was able to start and move under its own power.
UNKNOWN. In August 2023, I've noticed a noise, not sure where it was coming from- the wheels, engine etc. Brought my 2019 Honda Pilot into the dealership to get it checked out but the problem couldn't be replicated. The noise is still occurring as of this writing Nov. 12, 2024 and I'm still very concerned for my safety as it maybe possibly linked to the connecting rod bearing failure issue, which my vehicle was not included in the recall list. Sincerely, Concerned Valued Honda Customer
My rear camera does not work in my car. I received a recall notice regarding this. It was unable to be completed because my Infotainment system is completely non functional at this point. This is an on going issue that I have had with this car almost immediately after purchase. My speedometer also disappears while driving… the screen goes completely black and I have no idea how fast I’m going. It happens numerous times a week at this point.
I have taken the vehicle to the dealer 3 times since taking ownership of this vehicle, for the same issue. When changing gears, usually going uphill, the car stutters. And it has not been fixed
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated the rear-view camera failed to display the rearview. The contact then learned that the vehicle was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V431000 (Back Over Prevention), so they took the vehicle to the dealer and had the remedy completed. The camera continued to fail to display the rearview of the vehicle. They returned the vehicle to the dealer who then diagnosed that the camera had failed. The camera needed to be replaced. The vehicle had been repaired a second time. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 54,000.
