NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2021 Honda Pilot. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Within one week of purchase, the sideview mirrors were noted as shaking inside the housing. After a week of driving the mirrors are detaching from the housing. This has created a serious issue with visibility because of the movement but it will be worse if the mirror falls out. The Service Manager Douglas Burton and Sales Manager Craig Schwinn said that Honda "does not have a fix" for the issue. Douglas said that the mirrors should be taped down. Honda America has not responded to multiple requests for resolution.
Both side mirrors on the outside of the car shake and vibrate causing images in them to be blurry and hard to see. This is a safety issue, especially at night, because you cannot see truly where the vehicle beside you is. Only until the BSM comes on can you sometimes tell a car is beside you while driving at night. Notified dealer who said there was no permanent fix as of right now. On 7/3/2021 a service advisor did a band-aid fix of double sided tape on the passenger side mirror, but it is now shaking the exact same as before that was done.
The driver side mirror is loose. This is due to a defective batch of mirrors sold in a large number 2021 Honda Odysseys and 2021 Honda Pilots. Honda is aware of this issue. Other drivers are aware of this issue and the dealer has acknowledged this to me. At highway speeds, the driver side mirror vibrates and becomes unusable or distracting (i.e. unable to focus on objects while changing lanes, etc.) resulting in an unsafe driving experience. Bringing the car back to dealer results in them taking the mirror off, putting on more glue, and reattaching. This works for 1-2 months until the glue becomes loose again. According to the dealer, Honda has not come up with a permanent fix but does is not willing to install an entirely new mirror assembly. I believe this mirror issue justifies a recall for all defective vehicles and a permanent fix which may include an entire new mirror assembly if a permanent glue on the mirror actuator cannot be used.
The problem is the driver's outside rearview mirror. The mirror shakes so much that it is useless at highway speed, you cannot focus on vehicles coming up on your left hand side. The dealer and Honda are aware of the problem since the beginning of 2021. That being said both allowed me to purchase the 2021 Honda Pilot in June 2021. I have been in contact with the dealer over 6 times to see if a fix has been made available? I also filed a complaint with Honda in July 2021 and got no date for a fix. I have avoided an accident on three occasions, my daughter once and my wife has had close calls. How can a dealer and Honda sell me a vehicle with a known defect and not be able to fix it?
Front windshield broke while the vehicle was sitting in the parking lot. I was staying overnight at a hotel. When I went to bed the car was fine. When I got up the next morning the windshield was broken. The car had been parked all night and it was in a secure area. The windshield broke on its own. My insurance paid for the broken windshield.
The side-view mirror on the driver's side of the vehicle vibrates to the point of the images not being clear. The vibration gets worse with increased speed. In addition, once the mirror is set and starts vibrating it does not remain in place. This is a safety hazard as driver sets mirror and when they look to see if a car is visible in the mirror is not showing proper location. Furthermore, the vibration of the mirror makes it difficult to see the image in the mirror. This incident occurred on a test drive vehicle while looking for a car and I was told this would be fixed. I indicated I wanted a different car and the car I ended up purchasing had the same issue. When I called the service department they told me this was a known issue and Honda was working on it. The service department did replace my side-mirror with a new one but that did not fix the issue.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH, the Forward Collision Mitigation system inadvertently activated. The contact stated that the brakes were independently activated. The brake and several other unknown warning lights were illuminated with an audible chime. The contact stated that the software independently reset and returned to normal driving. The contact stated that the failure became constant. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer on three occasions, but no repairs were performed. On the third service appointment the contact was advised that the manufacturer was aware of the failure and was developing a remedy. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 10,486.
This is New Honda Pilot 2021 Trim EX-L purchase in Dec,2020. Miles 3300. It seems Honda is having software issues. Without ON of Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) feature is activating automatically and taking over driving or steering of the vehicle and attempt to steer the vehicle back into the center of the lane. Basically it's giving false indicator without ON of LKAS feature and due to this issue driver is becoming panic situation this will be safety issue and this will cause problems for others safety as well(Putting other at risk while driving). This is appearing from past one week onwards. Called Honda Customer Care about this issue and informed. They have taken a notes to inform R&D/Technical team and suggested to take to service to determine system failed or malfunctioned.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving above 20 MPH, the driver's side mirror was vibrating and causing a visibility issue. The failure had been reoccurring since the vehicle was purchased. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and the contact was informed that the failure was due to the adhesive used to secure the mirror. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. In June 2021 consumer bought a new Honda Pilot. From the time consumer drove it off the lot, she noticed that the driver's side mirror shook on rough roads and at highway speeds.
There is an issue with the electrical system in this car. The radio has intermittent static on any station and hands free calls drop after a short period. I have Googled this and it is a very common complaint on this type/year vehicle. I am concerned there are other electrical issues that may be more safety related. The dealer did a hard reboot of the computer, but nothing changed.
We just got the car from the dealer and it is still less than 200 miles and it’s leaking oil. There’s oil leaks in my garage which I thought was water coming from AC. When I check the oil dip stick. It was empty.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Pilot. The stated that the vehicle was pulling to the left or right while driving. The contact stated while depressing the brake pedal the vehicle started pulling to the right. Additionally, while driving over rough road surfaces the vehicle was making a loud rumbling sound as if the traction control was failing. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 9,800.
We were driving on a 8 lane highway at night 8:45 PM in our Brand new 2021 Honda Pilot Elite with less than 2200 miles on it. Our car's tire pressure light cam on. 2 miles later our front passenger tire blown out traveling at speed greater than 55 MPH. My pregnant wife, dogs and myself could have been killed. Currently these tire models are being recalled (2920), however, our tire was made (3920) did not quailfy for the recall. Clearly that was a mistake. Our local honda dealership did a quick inspection of the tire and stated that the warranty would not cover and since continental tires does not have a recall on the tire, there was nothing they could do.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving at high speeds, the driver's and passenger's side mirrors were shaking and vibrating which obscured the view of the driver. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and glue was added to secure the mirrors in place. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was unknown.
The front end collision camera will register on coming traffic and warn me to brake. On one occasion the vehicle actually braked for me. Luckily I was only driving 25 MPH and there were no vehicles behind me. We took the vehicle to the dealer to have them look into the issue but they informed me that Honda did not currently have a fix for the issue and that I would have to turn the camera off every time I started the vehicle to prevent it from potentially braking for me and bringing me to a complete stop while driving. Our main concern is that the camera picks up an on coming vehicle and stops us while driving on the highway causing us to veer off the road or get rear ended potentially injuring us or other drivers. We have tried several times over the course of several months to contact Honda directly about the issue but they will not return our calls.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the driver’s side exterior rearview mirror was shaking forcefully, and the contact was unable to see the road or other vehicles. The contact was able to drive to his destination. The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The contact took the vehicle to a second dealer; Honda of Kenosha (12180 77th St, Bristol, WI 53104, (262) 891-6300) where it was diagnosed with needing the driver’s side exterior rearview mirror to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired but the repair was pending. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20.
The dash crackles sometimes a little and other times it crackles constantly all across the dash. If the radio is playing, it interferes with the radio or using the Bluetooth. At first it seemed like something hit the windshield and now it's worse and crackles all the time. There was a recall on this recently but not for the 2021 Pilot. This needs to be fixed. It is quite distracting and annoying.
The vehicle will provide "BRAKE" warnings on the dash display or display the warning and auto-brake when on a 2 lane road, with only a painted divided line, when on a curve and an oncoming vehicle is coming wards my vehicle, but there is no apparent oncoming collision with the oncoming vehicle and with no vehicle in front of me. This has been intermittent and ongoing since vehicle purchase.
DRIVING ON 495 IN VIRGINIA NORTH TOWARD 66 NEAR ANNANDALE AT AROUND 55 TO 60 MILES PER HOUR ON THE BELTWAY, NON-TOLL PORTION, WE WERE SHOCKED TO HEAR THE SOUND OF EXPLODING GLASS FOLLOWED BY RUSHING AIR, LIKE AN OPEN WINDOW. WE LOOKED ALL AROUND THE WINDOWS TO SEE IF THERE HAD BEEN SOME SORT OF IMPACT, BUT ALL WINDOWS INCLUDING WINDSHIELD WERE INTACT AND FREE OF DAMAGE. I REALIZED FROM THE WHOOSHING SOUND THAT IT WAS COMING FROM THE SUNROOF. THE INTERIOR SHADE WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME, BUT WHEN I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY STOP THE CAR, I REALIZED THAT THE GLASS HAD EXPLODED UPWARDS. SOME SMALL SHARDS WERE STILL INSIDE THE SHADE AS IN THE PICTURE, BUT MOST APPEARED TO HAVE SHOT UPWARD AND BACK ONTO THE HIGHWAY. APART FROM THE SUNROOF, THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF ANY DAMAGE OR IMPACT, AND AT THE TIME THAT THE EXPLOSION OCCURRED, WE LOOKED ALL AROUND TO TRY AND FIND ANY POTENTIAL SOURCE OF IMPACT IN CASE SOMETHING HAD FLOWN UP FROM THE ROAD OR FALLEN FROM ABOVE, BUT THERE WAS NONE (NO DEBRIS ANYWHERE NEARBY ON THE ROAD, NO OVERPASSES NEARBY, ETC.).
I was about to cross the border I was not driving faster than 3 mph when a few functions stop working
I JUST BOUGHT MY BRAND NEW 2021 HONDA PILOT I HAD IT FOR 1 WEEK SO I DECIDED TO TAKE IT TO LAS VEGAS ON THE WAY THERE IT WAS FINE BUT ON THE WAY HOME I'M COMING DOWN I STARTED TO FEEL A JERK IN THE TRANSMISSION I DIDN'T THINK NOTHING OF IT SO I KEPT DRIVING. BUT FOR A NEW CAR IT SHOULD NOT BE DOING ANYTHING LIKE THAT AT ALL SO I TOOK IT TO HONDA DEALER AND THEY DID A MULTI INSPECTION CHECK AND SAID THEY DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT AND EVERYTHING SHIFT FINE BUT WHEN I TOOK IT HOME A WEEK LATER IT'S HAPPENING MORE AND MORE ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S TRAFFIC YOU WILL FEEL IT WAY MORE I JUST HOPE IT DON'T GO OUT AFTER MY 60K MILES WARRANTY RIGHT NOW IT'S ONLY 2,500 MILES AND I FEEL I GOT A LEMON I ALREADY HAVE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS BUT IT JUST TOO NEW TO GO OUT RIGHT NOW
When driving the collision mitigation and brakes apply , flash dash and shake wheel violently. Almost loss of vehicle control. Almost not drivable on 2 lane roads This happens multiple times during any driving. This has been ongoing since Purchase and has been reviewed by Honda dealer without correction. Only recourse was replace controls at owner cost even while under new car warranty
WHILE IN MOTION, GOING STRAIGHT ON A HIGHWAY, MY CAR, 2021 HONDA PILOT TOURING, WITH APPROXIMATELY 1600 MILES ONLY, HAD THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE WALL SEPARATED WITHOUT ANY PHYSICAL AGITATION FROM THE DRIVER. THERE WAS SUDDEN LOSS OF PRESSURE, AND VEHICLE LOST CONTROL. VEHICLE WAS STOPPED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AND PULLED OVER, BUT IN THAT SHORT WHILE THE ROLLING OF THE TIRE ON THE GROUND CAUSED BURNT SMELL TO SEEP INTO THE CAR FOR DRIVER TO NOTICE AND "FREAK OUT". THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE MOTOR WERKS HONDA, BARRINGTON, IL, WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. I WAS ASKED TO PAY FOR THE TIRE REPLACEMENT. THERE HAS BEEN NO OTHER DEFECT OR NOTEWORTHY CONDITION IDENTIFIED BY THE SERVICE TEAM. THIS IS THE SAME CONDITION AS DESCRIBED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 20V725000; "TIRE CARCASS MAY BREAK CAUSING SUDDEN AIR LOSS OVER-CURED TIRES MAY DEVELOP A BREAK IN THE SIDEWALL RESULTING IN SUDDEN AIR LOSS OR A BELT EDGE SEPARATION WHICH COULD LEAD TO A TREAD/BELT LOSS. EITHER CONDITION CAN CAUSE A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH OR INJURY." REF: TIRE: CONTINENTAL, CROSSCONTACT LX SPORT 245/50R20 102 H THE HONDA CORPORATE TEAM HAD PUBLISHED A BULLETIN AT END OF NOVEMBER 2020 RECALLING 214 HONDA PILOT, 2021, VEHICLES FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE, REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF THE DEFECTIVE TIRES. SINCE MY CAR'S VIN IS NOT IN THE RECALL LIST, NEITHER HONDA DEALERSHIP NOR THE CORPORATE ARE ACCEPTING ANY RESPONSIBILITY. THERE WAS NO NAIL OR BLADE FOUND BY THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN. THE MILEAGE IS EXTREMELY LOW. HENCE, THE RESPONSIBILITY SHALL FALL ON HONDA TO ACCEPT AND REPLACE THE TIRE. I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO GET ANY HELP FROM HONDA IN THAT REGARD. THE CAR STILL IS WITH THE DEALERSHIP'S SERVICE TEAM AS I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE CAR UNTIL ALL TIRES ARE REPLACED FOR FREE. I WILL BE TALKING TO MY LEGAL TEAM FOR HELP AS MY INCONVENIENCE CONTINUES TO GROW.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2021 HONDA PILOT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 3 HOURS, THE WIND SHIELD WIPER FLUID SPRAY NOZZLE REMAINED OBSTRUCTED WITH ICE AND THE FRONT WINDSHIELD COULD NOT BE CLEANED. AFTER CLEARING ICE FROM THE NOZZLE, THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE LOCAL DEALER PLAZA HONDA LOCATED AT 2722 NOSTRAND AVE, BROOKLYN, NY 11210 WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,800.
WHEN USING THE HANDSFREE BLUETOOTH FUNCTION, THE RECIPIENT CANNOT HEAR WHAT WAS SPOKEN AS IT MAKES BOISTEROUS/ STATIC NOISE. THIS IS EVEN SEVERE WHEN THE HEATER FAN IS ON. BOTH IOS AND ANDROID PHONES OBSERVE THE SAME RESULTS. MY LOCAL HONDA DEALER SAYS IT IS THE CHARACTERISTIC OF THIS MODEL, AND THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
I have been harassed and yelled at when driving my Black edition car. People are finding it offensive name and if I would have known this I would not have purchased. I have even got threats of harm due to the name in Atlanta. I can not even drive my car when I am going to certain parts of my job due to the fear that I have from the name and yells that I get.
WHILE DRIVING FOR ABOUT AN HOUR ON THE FREEWAY THE SOUND TO MY BLUETOOTH AUDIO QUIT. THEN THE APPLE CARPLAY WOULD NOT CONNECT. WHEN I GOT TO THE GROCERY STORE TRYIN TO MANEAVER INTO A PARKING SPOT THE BACKUP CAMERA DID NOT WORK WHEN I PUT IN REVERSE. AT FIRST I THOUGHT I HAD PRESSED PARK INSTEAD OF REVERSE BUT THAT WAS NOT THE CASE. NOT UNTIL I PARKED, SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND RESTARTED IT DID EVERYTHING START WORKING PROPERLY ( AT LEAST FOR NOW). THE VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 1500 MILES ON IT. I HAVE BEEN READING ABOUT A RECALL ON NEWER PILOTS (Y7Y) AND WAS WONDERING WHY MY VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED SINCE I AM EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. I MENTION ALSO THAT TWICE AT ABOUT 500 MILES I EXPERIENCED THE CRACKLING NOISE IN THE AUDIO THAT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH THE 2018 AND NEWER PILOTS.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, he noticed that several warning lights illuminated and remained illuminated. The contact continued driving to his residence. The following day the warning lights disappeared. Several months later the failure recurred. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The mechanic related the failure to an unknown electrical failure and performed a software update to fix the vehicle. the contact stated that the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer but was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000.
