BREAKS LOCK UP WHILE DRIVING BAD SMELL CAR WONT MOVE
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
I HAD NEW BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS PUT ON MY CAR LAST YEAR 2012 BECAUSE THE BRAKE SHOE FELL OFF ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. I BEGAN TO HAVE A SCRAPPING NOISE IN MARCH 2013 AND THEN ON APPROXIMATELY MARCH 22, 2013 WHEN I WAS RETURNING FROM THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE MY CAR SEIZED WHEN I WAS AT A STOP. IT WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD AND I COULD NOT TURN. TWO GUYS CAME TO ASSIST ME TO PUSH ME TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE CAR WOULD NOT BUDGE. I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO GOODYEAR IN SCHENECTADY. I NEEDED TO REPLACE MY BRAKE PADS, ROTORS, AND PISTONS. THE REPAIR COST $476.00. THE CAR IS NOW MAKING A SCRAPPING NOISE AGAIN. I HAVE READ MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE BRAKES FOR THIS CAR AND I BELIEVE THAT HYUNDAI OR THE STATE AUTHORITY SHOULD MAKE A RECALL FOR THE BRAKES, AND ASSOCIATED PARTS. THE BRAKE LIGHT WOULD ONLY REMAIN ERRONEOUSLY ILLUMINATED UNTIL THE CONTACT ADDED MORE BRAKE FLUID TO THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE ABS CONTROL UNIT MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 04V131000(SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE ), BUT THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REMEDY FOR THE RECALL DID NOT REPAIR THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 91,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 92,000.

2003 HYUNDAI SANTA FE. LEFT FRONT OUTER BRAKE PAD FRICTION MATERIAL FELL OUT AND WAS FOUND ON GROUND. SERVICED FRONT BRAKES AND FOUND 3 OF 4 PADS FRICTION MATERIAL BROKEN AWAY FROM STEEL BACKER. SAME CONDITION FOUND ON REAR PADS. FRONT PADS HAD APPROX 20% FRICTION MATERIAL LEFT AND REAR HAS APPROX 50%. BACKER PLATES HEAVILY RUSTED INDICATING PARTING OF FRICTION MATERIAL OCCURRED SOME TIME AGO. I LUCKED OUT BY NOT HAVING TO STRONGLY APPLY THE BRAKES AFTER THE PAD FELL OUT AND BEFORE I DISCOVERED IT. DROVE APPROX 20 MILES WITH THE PAD MISSING AND STEEL BACKER DID NOT TOUCH THE ROTOR (DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT). I HAVE ALL PARTS IF ANYONE WISHES TO EXAMINE THEM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 HYUNDAI SANTA FE. WHILE DRIVING 4 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL EXTENDED TO THE FLOOR OR WITHIN AN INCH OF THE FLOOR WHEN IT WAS DEPRESSED. WHEN HE PUMPED THE PEDAL, IT RESUMED THE PROPER POSITION. THROUGHOUT THE DAY, THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD EXTEND APPROXIMATELY TWO INCHES FROM THE FLOOR WHEN IT WAS DEPRESSED. IF HE STOMPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, IT WOULD GO ALL THE WAY DOWN AS WELL. MIDAS STATED THAT THEY COULD FIND NO FAILURE AND THAT IT WAS A "HYUNDAI PROBLEM". THE MASTER CYLINDER, BRAKE PADS, AND FLUID WERE CITED TO BE FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 148,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 145,000.

CUSTOMER STATES THAT THE MANUFACTURER TELLS HIM THAT BRAKE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE WARRANTY. *KB THE CONSUMER STATED ONE OF THE BRAKE PADS SEPARATED ALONG THE BONDING BETWEEN THE BRAKE PAD SURFACE AND THE STEEL BACKING PLATE. OF THE 4 BRAKE PADS, 3 WERE SLIGHTLY WORN. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE PADS HAD WORN OUT, HOWEVER THE CONSUMER DISPUTED THE CLAIM AND STATED IT WAS A FAILED COMPONENT NOT DUE TO NORMAL WEAR. *JB

I OWN A 2003 HYUNDAI SANTA FE (V6 2.7L 4 WD). MY ISSUE HAS A LONG HISTORY. ONCE THE BRAKES GET WARMED UP (USUALLY IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC) AND I BEGIN TO COAST THE BRAKE PEDAL WILL SHUDDER AND I HEAR A LOW ROARING OR RUBBING SOUND FROM THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE. THE NOISE WILL STOP IF I DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL - EVEN JUST A LITTLE. THIS GOES FROM A MILD ISSUE TO A BIG PROBLEM - THE VIBRATION AND NOISE WAS SERIOUS ENOUGH THAT I STOPPED AND HAD THE CAR CHECKED IMMEDIATELY. I'VE BEEN TOLD BY DEALERSHIPS ONE TIME IT WAS NOTHING AND ANOTHER TIME, IT WAS TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE MY CAR. THE LAST (AND HOPEFULLY LAST) SOLUTION WAS SOME SORT OF LUBRICANT PUT ON THE BRAKES. I HAVE YET TO GO A FULL YEAR WITHOUT THIS PROBLEM RECURRING. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE I BOUGHT MY CAR AND WHILE SOME OF THE REPAIRS HAVE BEEN COVERED, OTHERS HAVE NOT AND I BELIEVE I HAVE PAID FOR UNNECESSARY REPAIRS. I DRIVE A 2003 HYUNDAI SANTA FE 3.5L V6. ON THURSDAY, MARCH 2, 2006, I WAS DRIVING SLOWLY DOWN A STEEP, SNOWY HILL IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD. WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW THE CAR IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN CONTROL IN THE SNOW, THE BRAKE PEDAL KICKED BACK AND THE BRAKES WOULD NOT ENGAGE COMPLETELY. THEY FELT AS THOUGH THERE WAS A MASS OF SOMETHING SOLID BLOCKING THE PEDAL FROM DEPRESSING ALL THE WAY. I PRESSED HARDER ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, RELEASED THE PEDAL, PRESSED IT AGAIN, BUT NOTHING I DID KEPT MY CAR FROM CONTINUING TO PROPEL ITSELF DOWNHILL. I NEARLY SIDES WIPED A PARKED CAR BECAUSE, AS MY SPEED INCREASED, THE SANTA FE SLID OUT OF CONTROL ON THE SNOW. ONLY BY SOME MIRACLE WAS THE REST OF THIS BUSY NEIGHBORHOOD STREET EMPTY. I FINALLY REGAINED CONTROL AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL. AFTER THAT INCIDENT, THE BRAKES WORKED FINE. BUT THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS DANGEROUS FAILURE HAD OCCURRED. AND THAT SEEMS TO BE THE PATTERN OF THIS PROBLEM: ONE OR MORE INCIDENTS ON A WET OR SNOWY DAY FOLLOWED BY NORMAL OPERATION. IN APRIL OF 2004, THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM DEVELOPED. ANY TIME I TRIED TO STOP ON A WET OR SNOWY STREET, THE BRAKES WOULD SLOW THE CAR, BUT NOT STOP IT COMPLETELY. AT THAT TIME, HYUNDAI DID FIND A PROBLEM. MY SERVICE RECEIPT SAYS THE ABS ACTUATOR WAS BAD, THE ECU WAS REPROGRAMMED, AND THE HYDRAULIC UNIT FAILED AND WAS REPLACED. HOWEVER, THIS TIME, ON MARCH 3, 2006, EVEN THOUGH THE SANTA FE BRAKES HAD FAILED IN THE EXACT SAME WAY AS 2 YEARS AGO, HYUNDAI FOUND NO PROBLEM IN THE DIAGNOSTIC IT RAN AND DID NOT ATTEMPT TO MAKE ANY REPAIR. THEY ACTUALLY TOLD ME THAT THIS IS THE WAY THAT THE ABS IS SUPPOSED TO WORK. I AM CERTAIN THAT MY BRAKES WILL FAIL AGAIN, BUT UNTIL MY HYUNDAI DEALER SAYS THERE IS A PROBLEM, THEY'D LIKE ME TO BELIEVE THERE ISN'T ONE. ON SEPTEMBER 29, 2005 I WAS PULLING INTO A SPACE TO PARK MY VEHICLE I WAS PROCEEDING AT APPROXIMATELY 10 MILES PER HOUR OR LESS I APPLIED THE BRAKE AND IT WAS HARD BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP THE CAR CONTINUED TO ROLL INTO A PARKED CAR WHICH RECEIVED $58.77 WORTH OF DAMAGE PROCEEDING HOME AS I APPROACHED A RED LIGHT I SLOWED DOWN AND THE BRAKES DID NOT STOP THE VEHICLE I USED MY EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE CAR BEFORE I ROLLED INTO A CAR STOPPED AT THE LIGHTS. I HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TWICE MORE GETTING HOME,I CALLED HYUNDAI ROADSIDE ASSISSTANCE TO HAVE THE VEHICLE FLAT BEDDED TO LIA HYUNDAI OF ENFIELD UPON CALLING HYUNDAI ROADSIDE ASSISSTANCE THE GENTLEMAN TOLD ME THAT THEIR HAD BEEN A LETTER SENT OUT ABOUT A REPROGRAM TO THE ABS ON SANTA FE'S I ALSO CONTACTED HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT AND INFORMED THEM OF MY PROBLEM AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD FORWARD ME A LETTER REQUESTING CERTAIN THINGS PERTAINING TO MY VEHICLE AND THE PROBLEM I HAD PART OF THAT REQUEST WAS FOR COLORED PICTURES OF MY VEHICLE. MY WIFE AND I DROVE TO LIA AND TOOK DIGITAL PICTURES OF MY VEHICLE. WE FOUND A SERVICE BULLETIN ON THE FRONT SEAT OF MY VEHICLE HYUNDAI #04-01-002 DATED MARCH 4, 2005 SUBJECT (HYDRAULIC ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT HECU REPROGRAMMING. THIS ALSO SAID IT WAS FOR 2003 AND 2004 MY SANTA FE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.5L V6 ENGINES. MY VEHICLE IS A 2.7L V6 ENGINE. THEIR REPRESENTATIVES ON 11-2-05 TO INSPECTED MY VEHICLE I RECEIVED A LETTER ON FRIDAY 11-25-05 THAT THEY FOUND NO MALFUNCTIONS OR DEFECTS WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM. THEY ALSO SAID THAT THEIR INSPECTOR WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE CONDITION I INDICATED CAUSED MY ACCIDENT. MY INSURANCE ADJUSTER INSPECTED MY VEHICLE ON OCTOBER 10, 2005 TJE INSPECTOR'S REPORT STATES THAT CRAIG THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THERE IS A BRAKE PROBLEM AND AS YET HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED. TECH DROVE VEHICLE AND BRAKE PEDAL PUSHED BACK WHILE TRYING TO STOP. *NM

THE CONTACT WAS NOT AWARE THAT IT HAD COME OFF. SHE WAS GOING APPROXIMATELY 35-40 MPH. THERE WAS PROPERTY DAMAGE. THIS IS A BRAND NEW VEHICLE. THE DEALER SAID THEY NEVER HAD SUCH PROBLEMS.
