AT APPROX 13,000 MILES I NOTICED A HORRIBLE GRINDING NOISE WHILE APPLYING BRAKES AT HWY SPEEDS. AT FIRST THE NOISE WAS ONLY PRESENT AT HWY SPEEDS BUT THEN AFTER A COUPLE HUNDRED MILES BEGAN TO APPEAR AT ALL SPEEDS. DEALER STATED THAT A PIN FELL OUT CAUSING A CALIPER TO FREEZE THUS CAUSING MY BRAKE PADS TO COMPLETELY WEAR OUT! METAL ON METAL...NO BRAKES AND THE DEALER REFUSED TO GIVE ME A LOANER! JUST ONE OF MANY PROBLEMS WITH MY SANTA FE! I'VE COMPLAINED IN THE PAST ABOUT THE ABS KICKING IN WHEN NOT NEEDED AND THE NOISES AND VIBRATION THAT IT MAKES AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS NORMAL. NOW I'M NOT SURE.*AK
CONSUMER COMPLAINED ABOUT A RACK AND PINION STEERING PROBLEM. CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, YET PROBLEM RECURRED. VEHICLE WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO GIVE CONSUMER A COPY OF THE WARRANTY, YET NOTHING WAS BEING DONE TO IMPROVE THE SITUATION. *AK
VEHICLE STALLED INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED. DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *AK
SANTA FE HAS PROBLEMS WITH THE LOCATION OF THE GAS PEDAL AND THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE SONATA HAS PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE OPERATION. *MR THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS WITH THE SANTA FE (SUV) VIN#[XXX] AND A SONATA GLS VIN#[XXX]. THESE WERE BOTH NEW VEHICLES. THE SANTE FE DISPLAYED EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE AND THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD INTERMITTENTLY. THE BRAKE PEDAL AND ACCELERATOR PEDAL WERE SIMILAR IN HEIGHT. THE SONATA GLS DISPLAYED PROBLEMS, THE FIRST TO SECOND MONTH WITH A BACKFIRE AND OR EXPLOSIVE NOISE UPON THE STARTING THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WOULD STUMBLE WHEN SPEEDING, AND FELT AS IF THE A/C COMPRESSOR WAS TURNED ON. *SC *JB INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 HYUNDAI SANTA FE. THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT CONSISTENTLY ILLUMINATES ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL WHEN THE SEAT WAS RECLINED. THE ERROR CODE HAS BEEN RESET OVER 15 TIMES. ALSO THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT AND AIR BAGS WERE REPLACED DUE TO A DEFECTIVE HORN. NONE OF THE REPAIRS HAVE REMEDIED THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 116,000.
WHILE DRIVING AT 50 MPH THERE WAS VIBRATION IN THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. DEALERSHIP INSPECTED VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES, AND ROTATED THE TIRES, BUT COULD NOT DUPLICATE OR CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *AK THE VIBRATION AND FLUTTER OCCURRED AT 40 MPH TO 60 MPH AND WAS MOST NOTICEABLE AT 50 MPH DURING ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION (60 TO 40 MPH). THE FLUTTER/VIBRATION WAS FELT IN THE CONSUMERS HANDS ON THE WHEEL, FEET, AND FEET. THIS WAS AN INTERNAL VIBRATION/FLUTTER AND NOT JUST A ROAD VIBRATION. *SC
RIGHT AFTER I PURCHASED MY SANTA FE IN MARCH OF 2003, AT RANDOM TIMES MY CAR BUCKED WHEN THE CAR WENT OVER 40 AND THEN WHEN IT WENT OVER 60. THE JERK IS STRONG ENOUGH TO THROW THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS FORWARD AND BACKWARD. WHEN I INFORMED THE DEALER, THEY SAID THE COMPUTER SYSTEM JUST NEEDED TO GET USE TO THE WAY I DRIVE. AS THE PROBLEM BECAME MORE FREQUENT AND I BECAME MORE WORRIED, I CONTINUED TO INFORM THE DEALER. I WAS TOLD THAT HYUNDAI WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM;HOWEVER, THE TECHS HAD NOT BEEN AUTHORIZED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. IN EARLY JUNE OF 2004, I FINALLY WAS LISTENED TO BY THE MANAGER OF THE DEALERSHIP AND KOREAN TECHS HAD JUST BEEN IN REFLASHING COMPUTERS ON OTHER SANTE FE VEHICLES, TRYING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS THE ANSWER. THE COMPUTER SYSTEM IN MY CAR WAS REPLACED WITH A REFLASHED COMPUTER, AND I DIDN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS FOR TWO WEEKS. ON JULY 9TH, THE PROBLEM BEGAN AGAIN. *LA
WE PURCHASED OUR 2003 HYUNDAI SANTE FE NOVEMBER OF 2003. IT IS A 2003 MODEL WITH A 3.5 LITER ENGINE. AFTER HAVING THE CAR A COUPLE OF MONTHS, WE STARTED HAVING A LURCHING PROBLEM WHEN SITTING AT STOP LIGHT. IT WOULD FEEL AS IF SOMEONE BUMPED INTO YOU FROM THE REAR. WE BROUGHT THE CAR IN AND WERE TOLD THAT THIS WAS DUE TO AN ABS PROBLEM. THEY SERVICED THE CAR FOR THE RECALLS THAT WERE CURRENT, AND EXPLAINED TO US THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, BUT IT SHOULD BE OK NOW WITH THE RECALL SERVICING THEY HAD DONE. THE CAR CONTINUED TO HAVE THE PROBLEM, DOING IT SEVERAL TIMES A DAY. JUST RECENTLY I WAS PARKED IN A PARKING LOT. I STARTED THE CAR, APPLIED MY FOOT TO THE BRAKE AND SHIFTED THE CAR INTO REVERSE. THE CAR ENGINE SUDDENLY REVVED VERY LOUDLY, AND THE CAR LURCHED BACKWARDS ABOUT 6 FEET, ALMOST HITTING SOME PEOPLE WHO WERE PARKED BEHIND ME IN THE OPPOSITE SPACES, PUTTING GROCERIES IN THEIR CAR. I HAD TO PLACE A LOT OF PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE TO AVOID THE CAR GOING FURTHER THAN THE SIX FEET BEFORE THE ENGINE STOPPED REVVING. THE CAR IS NOW AT THE DEALER, WHOM I HOPE WILL BE ABLE TO HELP WITH THE ISSUE.*AK
CONSUMER RECEIVED NHTSA RECALL 04V131000 CONCERNING ABS BRAKE FAILURE. ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.5 LITER V-6 ENGINES, 4-WHEEL DRIVE AND ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEMS (ABS), IF THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 3 AND 12 MPH WHEN THE BRAKE PAD FRICTION SURFACES ARE WET, A VIBRATION MAY OCCUR BETWEEN THE BRAKE DISCS AND PADS, CAUSING ABS SENSOR ELECTRONIC SIGNAL NOISE TO DEVELOP. AT SPEEDS BELOW 5 MPH, THE ABS SENSOR SIGNAL NOISE MAY CAUSE THE ABS ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) TO ACTIVATE THE ABS, EXTENDING THE STOPPING DISTANCE. THIS RECALL FAILED, DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES, BUT PROBLEM RECURRED. *AK
VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND WITHOUT WARNING THE SUN ROOF EXPLODED. CONSUMER DROVE THE VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC INFORMED CONSUMER THAT A REPRESENTATIVE WOULD COME FOR AN INSPECTION. *AK
ON MARCH 30, 2004 AT 5:52 AM WHILE ON MY WAY TO WORK, MY HYUNDAI SANTA FE WAS HIT ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR BY A MAN WHO RAN A RED LIGHT. AS HIS VEHICLE MADE IMPACT, MY SANTA FE WAS SENT INTO A ROLL-OVER, WITH APPROXIMATELY THREE TO FOUR FLIPS. MY SIDE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, AND AS A RESULT, I HIT MY HEAD ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW. I SUFFERED FROM A CONCUSSION AND DAILY HEADACHES, THAT AT TIMES WERE DEBILITATING. THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE CAR, FROM FRONT TO BACK, WAS DESTROYED. I WAS UNABLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE THIS WAY, AND HAD TO GET OUT OF THE CAR THROUGH THE PASSENGER'S SIDE WITH THE HELP OF A PASSER-BY. BOTH VEHICLES WERE TOTALED AS A RESULT OF THE ACCIDENT. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI AND SENT THEM ALL OF THE REQUIRED PAPERWORK. I RECEIVED A REPLY THAT STATED THEY FELT THE AIRBAGS HAD FUNCTIONED IN THE MANNER IN WHICH THEY WERE DESIGNED, AND THIS WAS THEIR FINAL DECISION ON THE MATTER. I FAIL TO SEE HOW SIDE-AIR BAGS, NOT DEPLOYING IN A ROLL-OVER COLLISION, ARE FUNCTIONING AT ALL. WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, THE DUAL SIDE IMPACT AIRBAGS WERE ONE OF THE SELLING POINTS THAT THE DEALER USED. INCLUDED IN THE OWNERS MANUAL WAS A PAMPHLET THAT ALSO DESCRIBED THE AIRBAGS, ALONG WITH PICTURES OF A CAR BEING HIT IN THE DRIVER'S DOOR AND ROLL-OVER ACCIDENTS. ACCORDING TO THIS PAMPHLET, THE SIDE AIRBAGS WOULD PROTECT YOU IN CRASHES SUCH AS THESE. *JB
THE WINDSHIELD CRACKED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THERE IS NO DAMAGE FROM A ROCK OR ANYTHING ELSE. THE CRACK STARTS APPROXIMATELY 3 INCHES ABOVE THE BOTTOM CORNER OF THE DRIVER SIDE WINDSHIELD EDGE AND MAKES AN ARC TOWARD THE CENTER A FEW INCHES THEN UPWARDS ABOUT 12 INCHES. THE VIEW THROUGH ONE SIDE OF THE CRACK IS DISTORTED AS COMPARED TO THE VIEW ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CRACK.
SLOWING DOWN ON A DECLINE THE CAR RAN OVER A ROUGH POPRTION OF ROAD, THE ABS ENGAGED (CLICKING SOUND) AND THE BAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR - CAR DID NOT STOP. DEALER STATED THAT THERE IS A BULLETIN ON THIS BUT NO FIX AS OF YET. *JB
WINDOE WIPER BOLT BECOMES LOOSE ON MY 2003 HYUNDAI SANTA FE
WHILE DRIVING AT 65 MPH VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. *AK
CRACKED WINDSHIELD. *AK
A CRACK IN THE WINDSHIELD APPEARED ONE DAY. NOTHING HAD HIT THE WINDSHIELD. IT IS A SMALL ARC ON THE DRIVERS SIDE ABOUT 3" FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD. WHEN I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY SAID THAT SOMETHING HIT IT AND THE HEAT INSIDE THE CAR CAUSED IT TO CRACK. THE PLACE WHERE THEY SAID SOMETHING HIT THE WINDSHIELD ONLY THE POINT OF A PIN COULD FIT IN. I KNOW NOTHING HIT IT. ONE A FEW OCCASIONS I HAVE NOTICED A GRINDING SOUND COMING FROM THE TRANSMISSION. I ALSO HAVE HAD THE ABS ENGAGE WHEN THE BREAKS WERE NOT BEING APPLIED AND THE ROAD SURFACE DRY. THERE WASN'T A REASON FOR THEM TO ENGAGE.*AK
WHILE SITTING AT A STOP ON A SLIGHT INCLINE WITH BRAKE ENGAGED VEHICLE ROLLED FORWARD. DRIVER ENGAGED THE BRAKES FURTHER, AND FELT VIBRATION IN BRAKE PEDAL. THEN, VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP. THE DEALER WAS NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *AK
RUSTING BRAKE ROTORS ON MY 2003 HYUNDAI SANTA FE CAUSING EXCESSIVE NOISE AND UNSAFE BRAKE FUNCTION. HYUNDAI WANTS TO REPROGRAM THE ABS ECU, RECALL 04V131000, INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE BRAKE COMPONENTS WITH PARTS THAT WILL NOT RUST. THE REPROGRAMING WILL PREVENT THE ABS SYSTEM FROM FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AT LOW SPEED AND IN MY OPINION COMPROMISES THE FUNCTION OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT 10 MPH LEFT PASSENGER TIRE BLEW OUT. *AK
ON FEBRUARY 3, 2004, THOMAS ASHFIELD, MY HUSBAND, WAS DRIVING TO THE HIGH SCHOOL TO PICK UP OUR DAUGHTER. WHILE DRIVING SOUTHBOUND TOWARD THE HIGH SCHOOL TWO VEHICLES WERE TRAVELING NORTH. THE FIRST CAR WAS TRAVELING AT A HIGHER RATE OF SPEED THAN WHAT THE ELEMENTS CALLED FOR, HITTING THE SECOND CAR AND SHOOTING THE CAR INTO OURS, BROADSIDING TOM ON HIS DRIVER'S SIDE. TOM IMMEDIATELY HEARD A SNAP. HE SUSTAINED BROKEN RIBS, A TORN MENISCUS , AND A HERNIATED DISC IN HIS C5/C6. (HIS FIRST SURGERY IS COMPLETE, WE ARE AWAITING THE SECOND.) THE DAMAGE TO THE CAR WAS ENOUGH TO REQUIRE APPROXIMATELY $8,400.00. DURING THE ACCIDENT, THE SIDE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. THE INSURANCE COMPANY WANTED A RAPID REPAIR. WE NEVER THOUGHT TO GET ENGINEERS OUT TO LOOK AT THE DAMAGE OR TO TAKE PICTURES. WE DID LEARN THAT THERE HAD BEEN A PROBLEM WITH THE AIRBAG AND SENSOR FROM THE BODY SHOP AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD RETAIN THE COMPONENTS SO THAT HYUNDAI COULD VIEW THEM. I WROTE TO HYUNDAI ON APRIL 14, 2004. A REPRESENTATIVE CONTACTED US THE FIRST TIME IN JUNE AND THEN ON JUNE 22, 2004, HE CALLED AGAIN ASKING FOR THE NAME OF THE REPAIR SHOP. TOM GAVE HIM THE INFORMATION. THE REPRESENTATIVE CALLED US BACK AND TOLD TOM THAT THE REPAIR SHOP HAD GOTTEN RID OF THE PARTS. THAT WAS A SHOCK TO US BECAUSE UP UNTIL TWO WEEKS AGO, THEY TOLD US THEY WOULD RETAIN IT. (WE CONFIRMED THIS WITH THEM WHEN THE REPRESENTATIVE FIRST MADE CONTACT WITH US.) IN ADDITION, FROM WHAT THE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD TOM, THE STORY CHANGED ABOUT THE DEFECTIVE PARTS. I DO NOT HAVE THE SLIGHTEST IDEA OF WHAT OCCURRED. SOMETHING IS HAPPENING. I WANT ANSWERS. I WANT TO KNOW WHY THE MALFUNCTION HAPPENED. WAS THIS THE FIRST TIME OR IS IT SOMETHING THAT IS ONGOING AND NOBODY IS PAYING ATTENTION TO. MY HUSBAND SUSTAINED MAJOR INJURIES. WE PAID FOR SAFETY FEATURES ON A NEW VEHICLE AND THEY DID NOT WORK. WHAT WILL IT REQUIRE FOR US TO RECEIVE ANSWERS...A DEATH? *AK
ABS PUMP INITIATED UNNECESSARILY. WHILE PUMP WAS RUNNING, BRAKING POWER WAS LOST AND VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP, COASTING THROUGH INTERSECTION. VEHICLE WAS EVENTUALLY STOPPED BY SHIFTING TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL AND USING HAND BRAKE.*AK
WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP VEHICLE STALLED. CONSUMER MANAGED TO PULL OVER AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE WITH NO PROBLEM. DEALERSHIP HAD BEEN NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED VEHICLE STALLED. DRIVER WAS NOT ABLE TO RESTART VEHICLE, AND HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND REPLACE IT. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM RECURRED, AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THEN, MECHANIC REPLACED THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT RELAY, FUEL SENSOR ASSEMBLY, AND THE COMPUTER MODULE. *AK CONSUMER STATED THERE HAS BEEN 6 INCIDENTS/FAILURES THAT ARE CAUSING SERIOUS CONCERNS WITH STARTING AND STALLING. IT BECAME MORE FREQUENT AND STARTED HAPPENING WHILE DRIVING SANTA FE ON ROADS AND HIGHWAY. CONSUMER HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THE VEHICLE AND FEAR OF IT STALLING IN THE CENTER LANE WHERE THERE IS LITTLE OPTIONS EXCEPT GETTING HIT AND POSSIBLE GETTING SERIOUSLY INJURED. *BF
WHEN AT A STOP VEHICLE WOULD INTERMITTENTLY JERK FORWARD. DEALERSHIPS NOTIFIED, BUT THE PROBLEM WAS NOT RESOLVED. *AK
THE AIRBAG INDICATOR WOULD NOT GO OUT AFTER START OF ENGINE. BROUGHT CAR BACK TO DEALER WHERE I WAS ADVISED THAT DUE TO A SHORT IN THE SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER THAT THE CIRCUIT THAT TIED THE AIRBAGS WITH THE SENSORS IN THE BUMPERS ETC. WOULD KEEP THE AIRBAGS FROM DEPLOYING. DEALER INDICATED THEY WERE ORDERING A NEW PART TO REPLACE THE SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER AND FURNISHED ME WITH A LOANER. THEY DID NOT WANT ME TO DRIVE THE CAR IN THIS CONDITION SINCE IT WOULD TAKE 2 DAYS TO GET A NEW PART. *LA
THE HYUNDAI SANTA FE 2004 INSTALLED WITH A MOON ROOF WITHOUT THE WIND DEFLECTOR CAN GIVE A SEVERE HEADACHE IF KEPT OPEN WHEN ALL OTHER WINDOWS ARE CLOSED. WHEN THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED FOR A WIND DEFLECTOR, THEY SAID IT IS NOT AVAILABLE. *LA
WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH CONSUMER'S VEHICLE REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. UPON IMPACT, NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. *AK THE POLICE STATED THE AIR BAGS SHOULD'VE DEPLOYED. VEHICLE SUSTAINED $5000. DOLLARS IN DAMAGES. THE PERSON WHO VEHICLE SHE HIT, LEFT THE SCENE BEFORE THE POLICE ARRIVED. *PH
VEHICLE HAS HAD A HIGH PITCHED WHINE AT 35 MPH, COASTING, ACCELERATING, OR BRAKING. NOTICEABLE TO ALL DRIVERS/PASSENGERS, BUT NOT TO DEALER TECHNICIAN/SERVICE MANAGER. HAVE HAD IT IN THREE TIMES WITH NO CONDITION FOUND. AS TIME GOES BY I AM NOTICING THAT ALONG WITH THE NOISE, THE BRAKES FEEL WEAK AND I NEED ONLY MOVE MY ANKLE WITHOUT TAKING MY FOOT OFF THE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE WILL MOVE. ON TWO SEPARATE OCCAISIONS WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD IN THE RAIN, IT WOULD NOT STOP AS I BACKED OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY. I REPRORTED IT TO HYUNDAI, AND WENT BACK TO DEALER TO HAVE IT CHECKED AND WAS TOLD (WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE CAR) BY DEALER SERVICE MANAGER THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT AND I AM WASTING THEIR TIME AND WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE IT EXAMINED. FACTORY REPRESENTATIVE WHO HAS NEVER EVEN SEEN THE VEHICLE CALLED TO SAY THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH MY CAR AND I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO USE ANTILOCK BRAKES CORRECTLY ( I DO KNOW HOW TO USE THEM, I'VE ALWAYS STOPPED WHEN I PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL SO I HAVE A GOOD IDEA OF WHAT TO EXPECT). I AM CONCERNED THE CAR WILL NOT STOP WHEN I WANT IT TO SO I ONLY USE IT WHEN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, NOT EXACTLY WHAT A NEW CAR IS MEANT FOR. ON TOP OF ALL OF THAT I CANNOT GO TO THE NEAREST DEALER AS THEY WILL NOT LOOK AT IT UNDER HYUNDAI'S OFTEN MENTIONED 5 YEAR BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY.*AK

THE DEALER REPLACED MANY COMPONENTS; CRANKSHAFT, TRANSMISSION, BELT TENSIONER AND PULLEY. NONE OF THOSE REPAIRS CORRECTED THE NOISE. THE CLOCK SPRING FAILED AND CAUSED THE HORN AND CRUISE CONTROL TO BE INOPERATIVE. *NM

DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE OR CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *AK THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND AND THE CONSUMER HAD TO PUSH ON THE PEDAL TO MAKE IT GO, ESPECIALLY AT A SPOTLIGHT FOLLOWING OTHER VEHICLES. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN TO THE DEALER ON THREE OCCASIONS. THE CRANK SENSOR WAS INSTALLED WHICH DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. ANOTHER MECHANIC SOLVED THE PROBLEM IN A FEW MINUTES STATING THAT IT WAS A MINOR MECHANICAL PROBLEM. *SCC *JB
WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE VIBRATED UNCONTROLLABLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT THE BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS. *JB

THEY STATED THAT THEY REPAIRED THE LEAK BY SEALING THE TAIL LIGHTS, HOWEVER, THERE WAS WATER ON THE CARGO COVER IN ADDITION TO THE CARPET. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT WHEN HE STEPPED ON THE PEDAL TO GIVE THE VEHICLE GAS TO TAKE OFF, IT DID NOT MOVE. THE CONSUMER HAD TO APPLY EXCESSIVE FORCE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO MOVE. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN IN THE SHOP 3 TIMES, AND THE LAST TIME THE MECHANIC PUT IN A SENSOR, BUT THAT DID NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE BECAUSE THE CAR STILL WAS NOT RESPONDING TO THE PEDAL. I TOOK POSSESSION OF A BRAND-NEW HYUNDAI SANTA FE (2003 - 25 MILES ON ODOMETER) ON FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 2003. SATURDAY, JUNE 21,2003 I TOOK THE CAR OUT FOR A DRIVE. DRIVING AT 35 MILES MPH THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTED (BY IT SELF) OUT OF "DRIVE (D") INTO ...? (NEUTRAL, I'M GUESSING BY THE REVVING OF THE ENGINE). THE CAR ROLLED SLOWLY DUE TO ITS OWN FORWARD MOMENTUM, HOWEVER, PRESSING ON ACCELERATOR SUCCEEDING IN ONLY REVVING UP THE ENGINE - "DRIVE" REFUSED TO ENGAGE. SEVERAL ATTEMPTS WERE FUTILE. I SHUT THE CAR DOWN (AFTER LIMPING TO THE SIDE OF A 6-LANE ROAD IN TRAFFIC!). WAITED A FEW MOMENTS (PERHAPS A MINUTE OR TWO) AND RESTARTED THE CAR. THE TRANSMISSION ONCE MORE WOULD NOT ENGAGE INTO DRIVE. I SHUT THE CAR DOWN AGAIN AND WAITED A LITTLE LONGER (PERHAPS TWO -THREE MINUTES) AND STARTED IT AGAIN. THIS TIME THE TRANSMISSION ENGAGED AND I DROVE IT HOME - VERY CAREFULLY! I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP (KEYES HYUNDAI IN VAN NUYS) AND HAD THE CAR FLATBED TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE OUTCOME WILL BE. I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL MONDAY, JUNE 23 AT 7:30A.M. (PST) FOR THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO OPEN. THR CRUISE CONTROL ACCELERATES THE CAR FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION JERKS WHEN SHIFTING DISLODGING ALL PASSANGERS. THE ACCELERATER TAKES A FEW MOMENTS TO GET THE CAR GOING. THE PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION AND THE CRUISE CONTROL HAPPEN AT ALL SPEEDS, WEATHER CONDITIONS AND ROAD CONDITIONS.*AK

THE AIRBAG AND TENSION WIRES WERE RESET NUMEROUS TIMES WITHIN THE LAST YEAR, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUOUSLY RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE, BUT DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE WITH REPAIRS TO THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 500 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 156,000.
