THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN ON A SLOW SPEED EXIT AND LEFT ME WITH NO POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES IN A CURVE. THE VEHICLE STARTED UP AFTER I WAS ABLE TO STOP AND I CONTINUED ON WITH NO MORE ISSUE. JULY 21, 2016 AT 4:45PM. THIS HAS BEEN THE ONLY TIME THIS HAS OCCURRED IN THE 2 YEARS I HAVE OWNED IT BUT ITS A CONCERN.
STARTING ON JULY 15, 2016, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT (MIL) CAME ON, AS WELL THE FUEL GAUGE INCORRECTLY INDICATING THE AMOUNT OF FUEL, IN THE FUEL TANK, AT 107130 MILES. I HAD THE MIL DIAGNOSED AS P0464, FUEL SENSOR DEFECT. MANY OTHER HYUNDAI SANTA FE OWNERS, HAVE REPORTED THIS PROBLEM, REQUESTING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO REPAIR THIS SIGNIFICANT SAFETY PROBLEM, TO HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE, TO NO AVAIL. THEIR RESPONSE HAS BEEN IT IS NOT THEIR CONCERN AND HAVE NOT OFFERED TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. IF I WERE TO BE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED, E.G., 55-75 MPH, AND HAVE THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN, DUE TO LACK OF FUEL, THE POWER STEERING WOULD BE SIGNIFICANTLY IMPAIRED, WITH LOSS OF CONTROL. THIS COULD LEAD TO LOSS OF CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE, WITH SUBSEQUENT PROBABILITY OF AN "ACCIDENT", RESULTING IN PERSONAL INJURY, RESULTING IN DEATH, TO ME AND MY FAMILY MEMBERS, AS WELL AS OTHERS, AS WELL AS SERIOUS PROPERTY DAMAGE. THE COST FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE FUEL LEVEL SENSORS IS APPROXIMATELY $600.00 TO $800.00. THIS FUELS SENSOR PROBLEM AND MIL, OCCURS WHEN STATIONARY, WHEN THE IGNITION SWITCH IS TURNED TO START, AS WELL AS WHEN IN MOTION, AT ANY SPEED. I BELIEVE THAT BEFORE SOME DISASTROUS EVENT OCCURS, HYUNDAI SHOULD ASSIST IN THE REPLACEMENT OF THESE DEFECTIVE FUEL SENSORS.
I'VE TAKEN MY 2009 SANTA FE TO THE RICK CASE ROSWELL, GA ON FRIDAY, 7/1/2016 AND AGAIN TODAY, 7/15/2016, BOTH FOR THE SAME ISSUE, MY CAR IS STALLING WHILE I DRIVE IT. ON 7/1 THEY TOLD ME IT WAS THE BATTERY, SO HAD A NEW ONE INSTALLED WHILE THERE. BOTH TIMES, I'M BEEN TURNING INTO A CURVE (IT WAS A RIGHT HAND TURN ON 7/1 AND A LEFT HAND TURN ON 7/15). THE FIRST TIME I WAS LUCKY AS IT WAS JUST COMING OFF A STOP LIGHT. LAST NIGHT, HOWEVER, IT WAS A CURVE TO GET ON THE HIGHWAY WITH AN 18 WHEELER THUNDERING BEHIND ME WHEN MY CAR STALLED, AND I LOST THE POWER STEERING AND BRAKING AND ALMOST BECAME AN 18 WHEELER HOOD ORNAMENT. AS I MENTIONED, THE DEALER IS PERPLEXED BY THE ISSUE, NOTHING IS SHOWING UP ON THE DIAGNOSTICS AND THEY CAN'T REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. I HAD TO LEAVE THE DEALERSHIP WITH THE SENSE THAT I'M DRIVING AROUND IN A TICKING TIME BOMB. AS A WOMEN WHO FREQUENTLY DRIVES BY HERSELF IN THE CAR, AND ON THE HIGHWAY 99.9% OF THE TIME, I CAN'T TELL YOU THE FEAR THAT KNOWING THAT THIS CAN HAPPEN AGAIN AT ANY MOMENT AND THAT THE NEXT TIME I MAY NOT BE SO LUCKY, INSTILLS IN ME. THIS IS MY SECOND HYUNDAI AND I HAVE ALWAYS CONSIDERED MYSELF TO BE A PROUD HYUNDAI OWNER, BUT I JUST DID A LITTLE RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT THAT A) NOT ONLY AM I FAR FROM THE ONLY PERSON WHO HAS HAD THIS ISSUE, B) THERE HAS ACTUALLY BEEN A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT THAT HYUNDAI LOST REGARDING THE FREQUENT STALLING OF HYUNDAI VEHICLES. I NEED HYUNDAI TO FIX THIS ISSUE ASAP OR RISK BEING SUED BY MY FAMILY AFTER I'M KILLED IN A CAR ACCIDENT THAT IS THE DIRECT RESULT OF YOUR STALLING VEHICLES.
ONE MORNING THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON. WE HAVE HAD THE CAR 18 MONTHS WITH A NEW CAR WARRANTY BECAUSE OF MILEAGE 72,000 WHEN WE BOUGHT IT. TOOK TO DEALER AND IT WAS A BAD CLOCK SPRING WHICH CONTROLS THE AIR BAG. IF IT RETURNS SAYS THE AIR BAG NEEDS TO BE REPLACED $450 AND NOT COVERED UNDER BUMPER BUMPER WARRANTY . CAR WAS IN THE GARAGE. DID NOT BUMP ANYTHING, NO ACCIDENT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HYUNDAI SANTA FE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE HESITATED AND THE ENGINE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SPARK PLUGS WERE AFTERMARKET AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 87,371.
ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE FUEL GAUGE IS NOT REGISTERING THAT THERE IS GAS AFTER HAVING FILLED THE TANK TO CAPACITY. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW IF THE CAR HAS GAS OR NOT.
LONG BREAK LIGHT IN THE BACK ON TOP, FALLS OUT. USED SPECIAL TAKE TO SECURE IT
FUEL LEVEL GAUGE BECOMES ERRATIC AND NON-RESPONSIVE TO ACTUAL FUEL LEVELS. MOST OF THE TIME THE LEVEL GAUGE ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WILL READ AN EMPTY TANK WITH THE FUEL WARNING LIGHT LIT, EVEN AFTER FILLING UP THE TANK WITH GAS. FIRST SYMPTOMS OCCURED WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS.
LIKE THE OTHER POSTED COMPLAINTS, MY 2009 SANTA FE IS HAVING FUEL GAUGE ISSUES. IT NEVER SHOWS THE CORRECT LEVEL. I CHANGED THE FUEL CAP BUT THIS DID NOTHING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. THE READOUT COMES BACK: "FUEL LEVEL SENSOR". THIS CAN BE A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND WILL PREVENT ME FROM PASSING A STATE INSPECTION. I USE MY TRIP ODOMETER TO GAUGE WHERE I AM WITH FUEL TANK LEVEL. I HAVE TO SET MY TRIP TO ZERO AT EVERY FILL-UP. AT 144 MILES I KNOW I'M AT 1/2 A TANK ROUGHLY. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT HYUNDAI IS REFUSING TO ADMIT TO SO THEY CAN SAVE MONEY. MAYBE THIS ISN'T AN AIR BAG, BUT, IF I LOAN MY CAR TO MY DAUGHTER AND SHE RUNS OUT OF FUEL ON A HIGHWAY......I DON'T WANT TO THINK ABOUT IT. FORCE HYUNDAI TO FIX THIS!
FUEL SENSOR SHOWS GAS LEVEL ERRATICALLY BOTH ON GAUGE AND DIGITAL DISPLAY, USUALLY WHEN FUEL LEVEL IS BELOW 1/3 LEFT IN TANK. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALSO THEN DISPLAYS ERRATICALLY. THIS HAPPENS ONLY WHEN VEHICLE IS STOPPED IN TRAFFIC OR IN PARKED POSITION WITH ENGINE ON. HAPPENS ONLY ,SO FAR, IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC AND NOT ON THE HWY. HAS BEEN OCCURRING SINCE MAY 2016 WITH 105,000 MILES.
ABOUT A MONTH AGO MY ENGINE LIGHT KEPT COMING ON AND EVERY TIME I FILLED THE TANK WITH GAS THE CAR WONT START UNLESS I KEEP THE FOOT ON THE GAS WHILE TURNING THE IGNITION KEY THEN I HAVE TO SWITCH THE GEAR TO DRIVE WITH A FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND ONE ON THE GAS. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD TO REPLACE THE PURGE VALVE AND THE PURGE HOSE. NOT EVEN A WEEK I WENT TO FILL THE TANK AND MY GAUGE DROPPED TO EMPTY AND WHILE I DRIVE IT STARTS TO GO UP AND DOWN CONSTANTLY IT IS HARD TO TELL HOW MUCH GAS YOU HAVE, I NOTICE IS VERY COMMON ON THIS MAKE AND MODEL AND YEAR. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL SINCE IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HYUNDAI SANTA FE. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE, THERE WAS A STRONG FUEL ODER EMITTING FROM THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, THE FUEL GAUGE DISPLAYED INCORRECTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP AND GAUGE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,500.

THE PROBLEM IN MY CAR IS FUEL LEVEL SENSOR WHEN I DRIVE IN HIGHWAY MY FUEL GAUGE IS GOES CRAZY THEIR GOING UP THEN DOWN THEN WARNING LIGHT NO FUEL IN TANK BUT FUEL IS FULL THAT THE PROBLEM IN MY CAR. THERE IS A CURRENT RECALL FOR THIS MAKE AND MODEL CAR TO REPLACE THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH FOR SAFETY REASONS BUT IT DIDN'T INCLUDE MY VIN FOR SOME REASON, EVEN THOUGH THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED ON MY VEHICLE. THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH WAS FAILING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE RECALL WOULDN'T BE FOR MY CAR AS WELL AS IT'S THE SAME SAFETY CONCERN.
THERE HAS BEEN NUMEROUS INSTANCES WHEN MY VEHICLE HAS A FULL TANK AND DURING DRIVING THE GAUGE SUDDENLY INDICATE AN EMPTY TANK. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON ON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS MAKE VEHICLE. I AM AFRAID OF TRAVELLING I BELIEVE THAT THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED AS IT COULD CAUSE A SAFETY ISSUE FOR DRIVERS WHO MAKE THE ASSUMPTION THAT THIS IS ONLY A SENSOR PROBLEM AND CONTINUE DRIVING AND SUDDENLY STALL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD.
AFTER FUELING MY CAR, THE GAS GAUGE IMMEDIATELY DROPPED TO EMPTY AND THE LIGHT WOULD COME ON. WHILE DRIVING IT WOULD THEN SLOWLY CREEP UP TO ABOUT 3/4 OF A TANK. AT THE HALF WAY MARK, IT WOULD GO UP AND DOWN GRADUALLY SO THAT I COULD NEVER TRUST HOW MUCH GAS WAS TRULY IN MY TANK, LEADING ME TO ALWAYS WANT TO REFUEL AT THE HALFWAY MARK. THIS HAPPENED CONTINUALLY IN BETWEEN FUELING AND NEVER CORRECTED ITSELF.
AT APPROX 65000 MILES OF NORMAL DRIVING FUEL GAUGE BECAME ERRATIC AND UNRELIABLE. GUAGE READS ANYWHERE FROM FULL TO ONE EIGHTH AND FLUCTUATES ALMOST CONSTANTLY REGARDLESS OF ACTUAL FUEL LEVEL. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON PRODUCED ERROR CODE P0464. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION.

AROUND 90,000 MILES MY FUEL SENSOR STARTED NOT WORKING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL COME ON AND THE NEEDLE WILL GO UP AND DOWN AS WELL AS THE DIGITAL MILES LEFT ON TRIP, I BOUGHT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, BUT IT ONLY LASTED UNTIL 80,000 MILES OF COURSE. THE SENSOR BARELY WORKS AND WHEN IT DOES IT ONLY LASTS FOR A LITTLE WHILE. I HAVE TO KEEP TRACK MYSELF OF HOW MUCH GAS IS IN THE CAR. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND RECALLS FOR MUCH LESS. I DO NOT THINK VEHICLE OWNERS SHOULD HAVE TO PAY TO REPLACE THESE SENSORS AND/OR FUEL PUMPS WHEN THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECT BY HYUNDAI. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER HYUNDAI AGAIN.
THE FUEL GAUGE STOPPED WORKING AROUND 67,000 MILES AFTER FILLING UP THE GAS. THE GAUGE WOULD FLOAT BETWEEN FULL AND EMPTY REGARDLESS OF GAS USAGE USUALLY RESTING AT EMPTY. THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTED GOING ON BECAUSE OF THE FUEL GAUGE MALFUNCTION. THIS IS UNSAFE BECAUSE THERE IS NO WAY TO GAUGE THE AMOUNT OF GAS IN THE CAR,. IT IS ALSO UNSAFE TO HAVE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALWAYS ON, BECAUSE THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO ALERT THE DRIVER OF SAFETY ISSUES.
VEHICLE INSPECTION PERFORMED BY MANUFACTURE CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN. TWO ISSUES WERE RECOMMENDED BY THE TECHNICIAN: A) NEW TIRES. ALL 4 TIRES CURRENTLY ON THE VEHICLE ARE AROUND 5 YEARS OLD (BASED ON THE DOT DATE OF MANUFACTURE), AND HAVE BEEN DRIVEN FOR OVER 100,000 MILES (BASED ON ODOMETER READINGS FROM 2010 AND CURRENT). B) NEW REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. THE INSPECTION REVEALED REAR PADS AROUND 3 MM, AND ROTORS SHOWING RUST. THESE ARE SAFETY ISSUES, WHICH SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SELLING THE VEHICLE. REGULAR MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN PERFORMED ON THIS VEHICLE, BUT EXISTING RECORDS DO NOT SPECIFY THAT RECOMMENDED FLUID/TIMING BELT REPLACEMENTS WERE PERFORMED.
VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE WHILE PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY. VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN FOR APPROXIMATELY 4 HOURS.
I NOTICED THAT WHEN I WAS IN PARK, THE CAR WOULD JUST SHUT OFF. THIS HAPPENED THREE TIMES WITHIN A FEW WEEK'S TIME. I WAS CONCERNED AND WONDERED IF THE CAR WOULD EVER JUST SHUT OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY OR A BUSY STREET. TO MY HORROR, IT HAPPENED! A FEW DAYS AGO I WAS TURNING INTO A PARKING LOT AND THE CAR JUST SHUT OFF!...THERE WAS A CAR BEHIND ME THAT CAME TO A SCREECHING HALT! AGAIN MY GREATEST FEAR IS THAT THE CAR WILL STALL ON ME WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AND IF THAT HAPPENS ON A ROAD WHERE CARS ARE TRAVELLING AT HIGH SPEEDS, THEN I WOULD PROBABLY NOT LIVE TO TELL THE STORY.
FUEL LEVEL STOPPED WORKING, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. MECHANIC SAID THE CODE CALLED FOR REPLACEMENT OF FUEL LEVEL SENSORS. $500 REPAIR AND THE PROBLEM WAS NOT CORRECTED. I NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH GAS I HAVE AND I CAN NEVER PUT MORE THAN 8 GALLONS IN WHEN I FUEL UP. BUT GAS GAUGE WILL GO UP TO HAVE THEN DROP TO EMPTY THEN GO UP TO HALF A TANK. VERY HORRIFIC. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON WHICH WILL CAUSE ME TO FAIL INSPECTION.

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER WAS ACTIVATED AND THE ENTIRE REAR WINDSHIELD EXPLODED, CAUSING GLASS TO SHATTER INSIDE THE VEHICLE. PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE REMAINED PARKED FOR THIRTY MINUTES WITH THE HEATER AND DEFROSTER ACTIVATED. THE OUTSIDE TEMPERAURE WAS 27 DEGREES. THE CONTACT SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO SPECIALIZED IN WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 87,000.
THE ENGINE LIGHTS STAYS ON WHEN YOU FILL THE GAS TANK IT STILL SAYS EMPTY WHEN DRIVING EVERYTHING WILL SHUT OFF THIS IS FOR THE SECOND TIME IN LESS THAN A YEAR
AFTER FILLING VEHICLE WITH FUEL, FUEL GAUGE SHOWED TANK EMPTY AND YELLOW LIGHT ON DASH SHOWS FUEL EMPTY. FUEL GAUGE RECOVERED TO SHOW 1/2 FULL, THEN DISPLAYS ERRATIC RESULTS. ONLINE FORUMS SHOW DEFECTIVE FUEL SENSOR WITH A LARGE NUMBER OF HYUNDAI VEHICLES. THERE SHOULD BE RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. DRIVERS MAY THINK THEY HAVE SUFFICIENT FUEL, TO THEN HAVE VEHICLE RUN OUT OF GAS IN A DANGEROUS DRIVING ENVIRONMENT.
AT AROUND 90,000 MILES, THE FUEL GAUGE STOPPED WORKING. EVIDENTLY, THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. EVEN AFTER FILLING THE TANK WITH GAS, THE GAUGE SHOWS "EMPTY". THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE THE FUEL SENDING UNITS IN THE TANK - THE SENSOR BRUSHES BREAK OFF AND THE UNIT NO LONGER SENDS A SIGNAL TO THE GAUGE. THIS POSES SAFETY ISSUES TO PEOPLE WHO DON'T CAREFULLY TRACK THEIR CAR'S FUEL USE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CAR STALLING ON THE HIGHWAY DUE TO FUEL EXHAUSTION. THE PROBLEM SETS TROUBLE CODES AND LIGHTS THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT.
I AM HAVING THE ISSUE WITH THE GAS GAUGE, WHERE A SHORT TIME AFTER FILLING UP THE TANK, THE GAUGE DROPS TO EMPTY AND THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. I BELIEVE THIS PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY THE SAME ISSUE AS A RECENT RECALL, WHERE OIL WAS DRIPPING ON THE ALTERNATOR. JUST A COUPLE DAYS AFTER I RECEIVED THE RECALL FOR THAT ISSUE, I BEGAN HAVING ELECTRICAL ISSUES. MY RADIO CAME ON AND OFF, MY WINDOWS ROLLED UP AND DOWN VERY SLOWLY. ON MY LAST DRIVE HOME, MY ELECTRONIC BRAKES STOPPED WORKING, THE STEERING WAS HARD AND THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN SHIFTING UP AND DOWN BEFORE I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO PULL OVER AND HAVE THE CAR TOWED. UPON MY DRIVE HOME FROM THE DEALER AFTER THE RECALL REPAIR, I NOTICED THAT A HEADLIGHT WAS NEWLY BURNED OUT. IN LESS THAN A WEEK, THE OTHER HEADLIGHT BURNED OUT. ON THE SAME TANK OF GAS I HAD SINCE GETTING THE CAR BACK FROM THE DEALER, THE GAUGE FIRST DROPPED TO EMPTY BEFORE THE TANK WAS EMPTY. I BELIEVE SOMETHING WAS SHORTED OUT IN THE GAS GAUGE SYSTEM, JUST AS THE HEADLIGHTS AND ALL THE OTHER ELECTRICAL ISSUES THAT RESULTED FROM THE ALTERNATOR NOT WORKING. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY COMES ON AND OFF. THIS IS CLEARLY THE MOST COMMON SAFETY COMPLAINT ON NHTSA, AND OTHER INTERNET COMPLAINT PAGES RELATED TO SAFETY ISSUES WITH THE HYUNDAI SANTA FE. SEVERAL MODEL YEARS APPEAR TO BE HEAVILY AFFECTED. NOT KNOWING HOW MUCH FUEL THE VEHICLE HAS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN AND COULD LEAD TO ACCIDENTS, INJURIES, AND DEATHS. WE WERE REARENDED BY A LARGE PICKUP TRUCK THAT WAS TRAVELLING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED AND THE DRIVER DID NOT APPLY HIS BRAKES. WE WERE STRUCK WHILE ATTEMPTING AND MAKING A RIGHT TURN, SPUN AROUND CLOCKWISE AND FLIPPED ON OUR TOP, TOTALLY DEMOLISHING OUR CAR. OUR CONCERN: THE AIRBAG SYSTEM DID NOT ENGAGE RESULTING IN INJURIES REQUIRING IMMEDIATE TRANSPORTATION FOR HOSPITALIZATION FOR THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON A PAVED, RURAL-TYPE STREET WITH LITTLE TRAFFIC PRESENT. THE DRIVER HAS A BROKEN NECK, MULTIPLE INJURIES INCLUDING A CLOSED HEAD CONCUSSION.
WE WERE EXITING WEST BOUND I-10 IN PENSACOLA, FL, AND WHEN TURNING RIGHT ONTO THE SURFACE ROAD AT SLOW SPEED THE ENGINE DIED AND WE LOST POWER INCLUDING STEERING AND BRAKES. WE WERE ABLE TO PULL OFF OF THE ROAD INTO A RESTAURANT PARKING LOT AND RESTART THE CAR, BUT HAD A CLOSE CALL WITH SUDDENLY REDUCED SPEED IN MERGING TRAFFIC. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED TO US IN THIS CAR. THE FIRST INCIDENT WAS IN AUG, 2013 AND WAS REPORTED AS INCIDENT REPORT #1053149. AT THAT TIME, THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO REPRODUCE THE ISSUE, SO NO REPAIR WAS MADE. WE BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED.
HAD ABOUT A HALF TANK OF GAS AND FILLED UP BEFORE TAKING A ROAD TRIP. LEFT STATION AND NOTICED GAUGE DID NOT MOVE TO FULL. FEW MILES DOWN THE ROAD IT STARTED TO SLOWLY INCREASE UP TO THE FUEL MARK. AFTER STOPPING AGAIN ON DOWN THE ROAD AND RESTARTING FUEL GAUGE WOULD SHOW HALF TANK THEN DROP TO EMPTY AND THEN BACK UP TO HALF TANK. I HAVE TO KEEP GETTING GAS AND KEEP TRACK OF MILEAGE SO THAT I DO NOT RUN OUT WHILE ON THE INTERSTATE. FROM WHAT I'VE READ THIS IS A VERY COSTLY REPAIR AND IS CERTAINLY A SAFETY HAZARD AS I TRAVEL A LOT FOR WORK ON THE BUSY INTERSTATES AND CANNOT CHANCE RUNNING OUT OF FUEL
THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE PAST YEAR AND HAS INCREASED IN FREQUENCY THE LAST 2 MONTHS. AT RANDOM TIMES, IN TOWN OR ON HIGHWAY WITH VARYING SPEEDS, THE RPM WILL JUMP WITHOUT ME USING ANY MORE PRESSURE ON THE GAS PEDAL, WHICH CAUSES THE CAR TO ACCELERATE QUICKLY AND WITHOUT WARNING. THEN, THE RPM WILL GO BACK DOWN IN THE SAME MANNER JUST AS QUICKLY.
SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND WHILE NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE ENGINE, I NEEDED TO PAY $1000 TO REPAIR THE SENSOR BECAUSE I NEEDED MY CAR EMISSION INSPECTED. IN THE LAST MONTH, WHILE ON A ROAD TRIP, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND THE CAR JUST LOST POWER AND STALLED. WHEN WE RESTARTED THE CAR, THE LIGHT WAS STILL ON BUT WENT OFF THE NEXT DAY. SINCE THEN, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON RANDOMLY AND THE FUEL GAUGE JUMPS ALL OVER THE PLACE. IT WILL INDICATE I HAVE 88 MILES TO EMPTY AND THEN JUMP BACK UP TO 130. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL COME ON ONE DAY AND BE OFF THE NEXT.

OVER BALANCE OF DRIVE NEEDLE DANCED AROUND THE 3/4 FULL MARK. I AM READING NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS FROM HYUNDAI OWNERS OF SAME PROBLEM OVER SEVERAL MODEL YEARS. IT APPEARS HYUNDAI IS DENYING A PROBLEM AND HAS TAKEN NO STEPS TO IMPROVE FUEL LEVEL SENSORS AND THUS REPLACING WITH THEM WITH SAME IS ONLY BAND AIDE FIX WITH POTENTIAL OF SERIOUS ACCIDENT IF VEHICLE DOES RUN OUT OF GAS ON HIGHWAY OR CROSSING INTERSECTION. VEY POOR POSITION OF COMPANY AND WHEN SHOPPING FOR NEW CAR I WILL CONSIDER ANOTHER MANUFACTURER.
FUEL GAUGE IS NOT WORKING AND CAR IS RUNNING OUT OF GAS EVEN THOUGH INDICATOR INDICATE THERE IS GAS. I HAD BOTH FUEL SENSORS REPLACED AND THE PROBLEM STILL CONTINUES. I HAVE RUN OUT OF GAS MULTIPLE TIMES AND RECENTLY RAN OUT OF GAS ON AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS STRETCH OF 101. WITH TWO YOUNG CHILDREN, THIS CONTINUES TO BE A MAJOR SAFETY THREAT AND CONCERN FOR ME. BASED ON SOME QUICK GOOGLING IT'S CLEAR THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM AND SECURITY CONCERN FOR OTHER SANTA FE OWNERS AND IT SHOULD BE REPAIRED OR REPLACED UNDER A RECALL.
THIS HAS HAPPENED ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS, BOTH WHILE DRIVING IN TOWN AT SLOW SPEEDS AND ON A HIGHWAY AT HIGH SPEEDS. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL COME ON AND THE CAR WILL CUT OFF, NO POWER AT ALL. ON EACH OCCASION I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND RESTARTED THE CAR IMMEDIATELY AND IT RESUMED IT'S NORMAL DRIVING CAPACITY. IT IS VERY SCARY TO BE DRIVING ALONG AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR CUTS OFF FOR NO REASON. THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A SHARP CURVE, SO NOT HAVING POWER STEERING AT THAT POINT WAS NOT VERY SAFE, AS I ENDED UP IN THE OTHER LANE BUT THANK GOODNESS THERE WASN'T A CAR COMING IN THE OTHER DIRECTION AT THE TIME.
THE LIGHT FOR MY FUEL TANK CAME ON SAYING EMPTY, HOWEVER I RECALLED JUST HAVING PUT GAS IN THE TANK. A FEW DAYS LATER THE ENGINE LIGHT BEGAN TO COME ON. I TOOK MY CAR TO AUTOZONE TO TEST THE ENGINE LIGHT, I WAS TOLD THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL SENSOR. I LATER CALLED HYUNDAI AFTER CONSTANTLY HAVING TO WATCH MY GAS AND MILEAGE TO MAKE SURE THE TANK DOES NOT RUN EMPTY. HYUNDAI ADVISED IT IS POSSIBLY THE FUEL SENDING UNIT WITHOUT EVEN HAVING TO LOOK AT THE CAR AND ADVISED IT WOULD COST ABOUT $800 TO REPAIR. THE REP IN THE PARTS DEPARTMENT STATED THEY HAVE HAD SEVERAL CALLS REGARDING REPLACING THE PART. THIS COULD POTENTIALLY BE A SERIOUS ISSUE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE DRIVING ON A BUSY ROAD OR HIGHWAY. THERE SEEMS TO BE SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE.
MY GAS GAUGE SHOWED A HALF TANK ONE DAY THEN IT SHOWED EMPTY THEN IT SHOWED EMPTY/ THE NEXT DAY IT WOULD NOT START I NEW THERE WAS GAS IN IT AN HOUR LATER IT STARTED BUT AFTER I WAS OUT IT WENT BACK TO EMPTY. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE FOR THIS ISSUE. THE VEHICLE HAS THE 3.3L V6 ENGINE. SE TRIM LEVEL. THE ENGINE STALLED WHEN DECELERATING FROM A HIGHWAY SPEEDS TO A STOP. IT STALLED BEFORE THE CAR STOPPED. IT RESTARTED AND DROVE AFTER THAT. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I STOPPED AT THE DEALER THAT SAME DAY. I HAD THEM CHECK THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM JSUT TO BE SURE THAT WAS NOT THE ISSUE. BATTERY, CHARING, ETC ALL TESTED FINE. I HAVE THE PRINTOUT. SO THE VECHICLE DID NOT SHOW A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THE DEALER OFFERED NO OTHER ASSISTANCE. IT IS CLEAR FROM SEARCHING THE INTERNET THAT MANY MANY PEOPLE HAVE AN ISSUE WITH HYUNDAI VEHICLES AROUND 2009 STALLING. MOST ALL OF THESE PEOPLE REPORT THE ISSUE WITH NO CODES. SO THE DEALER IS LIMITED IN WHAT THEY CAN DO. THEY TALKED ABOUT ECM UPDATES (FIRMWARE), AND A FUEL SYSTEM SENSOR, AND THE CRANKCASE SENOR. THIS IS CLEARLY A LARGE ISSUE PUTTING PEOPLE AT RISK. AT AROUND 4:50 PM ON AUGUST 11, 2015, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 2009 HYUNDAI SANTA FE LIMITED 2WD 4 DOOR WAGON NORTH-BOUND ON SECOND AVENUE, THROUGH THE INTERSECTION OF SECOND AVENUE AND FOOTHILL BOULEVARD IN UPLAND, CALIFORNIA. CANNOT EXACTLY DETERMINE HOW MUCH FUEL IS LEFT IN TANK. HAD FUEL SENSING PARTS REPLACED AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $600 BY A MASTER ASE CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN. AFTER REPAIRS WE FILLED THE TANK WITH FUEL. ALTHOUGH TANK WAS FULL IT ONLY REGISTERED 3/4 FULL WITH A RANGE OF 254 MILES. BEFORE THIS INCIDENT, THE RANGE WAS 320 - 324 MILES. RETURNED TO TECHNICIAN WHO ALERTED US THAT HE HAS SEEN MANY SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH HYUNDAIS AND KIAS. HE BELIEVES HYUNDAI SHOULD RECALL AND FIX PROBLEMS. THIS ATTESTED TO BY SIMILAR PROBLEMS LISTED ON YOUR SITE SAFER CAR.GOV. MY WIFE AND I ARE IN OUR 70S AND ARE CONCERNED WE WILL RUN OUT OF GAS ON A REMOTE HIGHWAY OR ENGINE WILL STALL IN TRAFFIC.
