RIGHT-REAR (I.E., PASSENGER SIDE REAR) TIRE WEARING ABNORMALLY. ROTATING TIRES HAS SPREAD THE PROBLEM TO ALL TIRES MOUNTED AT ANY TIME ON THE RIGHT-REAR. NOTHING HAS HAPPENED TO DAMAGE ANY SUSPENSION COMPONENTS AND RIGHT-REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT IS OKAY. *NLM
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 02V105000 (AIR BAGS: SIDE/WINDOW) AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 01V347000 (AIR BAGS) BUT THE REPAIRS DID NOT CORRECT THE FAILURE AND THE AIR BAG LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT DENIED ASSISTANCE WITH ANY FURTHER REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED FOR THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 13,981.
THE VEHICLE STALLED, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ABRUPTLY PULL. *JB THERE WAS A VIBRATION WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AT HIGH SPEEDS(DUE TO WARPED ROTORS), A TAP NOISE WAS COMING FROM THE TIMING BELT, AND THE VEHICLE WOULD DIE AT THE SPEED OF 60 MPH. THE TIMING BELT, THE BROKEN COUNTER BALANCE, AND THE MISSING TIMING BELT TEETH WERE REPLACED. *SCC
THE TRANSMISSION FAILED.*JB
AIR BAG LIGHT GOES ON WITHOUT REASON WHILE DRIVING. AIR BAG LIGHT STAYS ON UNTIL CAR IS BROUGHT TO THE DEALER. EVEN WHEN RESET, AIRBAG SOMETIMES GOES BACK ON WITHIN SEVERAL WEEKS OF BEING FIXED. CAR HAS BEEN IN TO DEALER 9 TIMES IN 3 YEARS FOR AIR BAG RELATED PROBLEMS. THE LAST TIME IT WAS BROUGHT IN THE DEALER SAID WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY OVER $464 FOR A NEW PPD SENSOR. WE ARE NOT WILLING TO INCUR THIS COST WITH THE HISTORY OF FOLLOW-UP FAILURE WE HAVE EXPERIENCED. *NM
I WAS DRIVING ON HWY 60, TOWARDS LEXINGTON VA. THIS IS A NARROW FOUR LANE, DIVIDED BY A GRASSY MEDIAN, THERE ARE VERY FEW PLACES TO PULL OVER. AS I WAS DRIVING UPHILL, AT ABOUT 55 MPH, MY HOOD FLEW UP AND SMASHED AGAINST THE WINDSHIELD, AND WRAPPED AROUND THE ROOF OF THE CAR. I WAS PASSING A LOG TRUCK WHEN THIS HAPPENED, AND THERE WASN'T ANYWHERE TO PULL OVER, SO I DROVE LOOKING THROUGH THE CURVE UNDER THE HOOD, AND USED ALL OF MY MIRRORS UNTIL I COULD GET TO A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER. MY 13 YR. OLD SON WAS IN THE PASSENGER SIDE, AND WE WERE BOTH COMPLETELY IN SHOCK. THE DAMAGE TO MY CAR, APPROXIMATELY $4000.00. THE OTHER COMPLAINT I HAVE IS I HAD TO WAIT 8 WEEKS FOR HYUNDAI TO GET A HOOD FOR MY CARS, MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR. THEY SAID, THE HOODS WERE ON BACK ORDER AND THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHEN THY WOULD BE ABLE TO GET MY HOOD. I HAD TO PAY FOR THE DAMAGE WITH MY INSURANCE, I THINK HYUNDAI SHOULD PAY FOR ALL OF THE EXPENSES, THAT EVERYONE INCURRED FROM THIS DEFECT. CONSUMER CALLED COMPLAINING ABOUT PROBLEM WITH THE DRIVER SEAT LATCH WHICH DOESN'T LOCK INTO POSITION WHEN IT IS RE-ADJUSTED, THE TECHNICIAN AT THE DEALER MENTIONED TO THE CONSUMER THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *NLM
WHILE TRAVELING ABOUT 5MPH ANOTHER VEHICLE TRAVELING 30 MPH HIT HER, AND THE DUAL AIRBAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY. DEALER IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. PH DEALERSHIP STATED AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY BECAUSE CONSUMER WAS ONLY TRAVELING AT 5 MPH. DRIVER SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES AND THE VEHICLE WAS CONSIDERED TOTALED. *TT

THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE REPAIRED THREE TIMES AND THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD IT REPAIRED ONCE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBERS 01V347000 OR 02V105000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 103,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 12,411.
VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL COLLISION AT 50 MPH. UPON IMPACT NEITHER AIR BAG DEPLOYED. DRIVER SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES, VEHICLE WAS TOTALLED. AIR BAG RECALL WAS DONE IN JUNE OF 2002.*AK

VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL COLLISION AT 35-40 MPH AND NEITHER AIR BAG DEPLOYED. DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED AT THIS TIME. *AK CONSUMER ALSO STATED THAT HE WAS STOPPING THE VEHICLE WHEN IT STALLED THEN SUDDENLY IT SPED FORWARD, EVEN AS CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES. EVEN AFTER PULLING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED ON HI REV. THERE WAS ONE INJURY.*SCC
WHILE APPLYING BRAKES FOR A STOP LIGHT VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WAS FORCE VEHICLE INTO AN INTERSECTION, AND GET INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL COLLISION WITH AN ONGONG VEHICLE. DEALER AND MANUFACUERER WERE NOT NOTIFIED AT THIS TIME. FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFROMATION.*AK

AUTOMOBILE HAS HAD CHRONIC PROBLEMS WITH AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT. CONSTANTLY ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN TO DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES ( MORE THAN 8 TIMES). IN EACH INSTANCE LIGHT IS RESET AND COMES BACK ON SHORT TIME LATER. DEALERSHIP ISSUED ASSURANCE ILLUMINATED AIRBAG LIGHT DOES NOT INDICATE AIRBAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY WHICH IN NOT TRUE. AIRBAG LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED NOW AND DEALER NOW WANTS TO CHARGE TO FIX. RECALL ISSUED IN 2002 FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT WAS NEVER REPAIRED. SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AS AIRBAG WON'T DEPLOY IN AN ACCIDENT. *TR

ENGINE CHECK LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY. DEALER HAS REPLACED A SENSOR THREE TIMES.*AK
ENGINE CHECK LIGHT AND THE AIR BAG LIGHT KEPT ILLUMINATING WHILE DRIVING. DEALER RESET BOTH SYSTEMS ON SIX SEPARATE OCCASIONS ,BUT PROBLEM RECURRED. *AK
CONSUMER HAD VEHICLE FOR 4 MONTHS AND TRANSMISSION WENT OUT. IT WAS TAKEN INTO REPAIR SHOP, AND MECHANIC KEPT IT FOR 38 DAYS. SINCE THEN TRANSMISSION HAS GONE OUT 3 MORE TIMES. *AK
WHILE DRIVING ON ROUTE 202 IN RARITAN NJ, WITHOUT WARNING HOOD BLEW UP INTO THE WINDSHIELD SHATTERING THE WINDSHIELD AND DAMAGING THE HOOD. *AK
WITH LESS THAN 1300 MILES ON THE VEHICLE, IT BEGAN TO BUCK AND SURGE IN TRAFFIC AT 65MPH, AND THE TACHOMETER BEGAN SWINGING WILDLY FROM 0 TO 2500RPM. AFTER GETTING OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD QUICKLY, WHERE IT STALLED AGAIN AND AGAIN, I CALLED HYUNDAI ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE FOR A TOW TO THE DEALER. THEY EXAMINED AND DROVE THE CAR, AND TOLD ME IT WASN'T ACTING UP FOR THEM, AND SUGGESTED I TAKE IT HOME WHILE THEY ORDERED AN EXHAUST PURGE VALVE PER A 2.4L ENGINE PROBLEM SERVICE BULLETIN FROM HYUNDAI. WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY TOWARD HOME, IT BEGAN BUCKING AND THE TACHOMETER WAS SWINGING WILDLY AGAIN, SO I GOT OFF TO THE SIDE, WHERE IT REPEATEDLY STALLED, AND AGAIN I CALLED HYUNDAI ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE FOR A TOW BACK TO THE DEALER. THEY RENTED A CAR FOR ME, AND OVER THE NEXT WEEK REPLACED THE PURGE VALVE, BUT THE CAR ALSO DIED ON THEM, SO THEY DID A MORE THOROUGH ANALYSIS, WHICH SHOWED A FAILED CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR, WHICH CAUSED IGNITION SPARK FAILURE. AFTER REPLACING THAT, THEY CALLED ME TO COME GET THE CAR AND TAKE IT HOME. THIS TIME IT FAILED JUST AS I REACHED MY DRIVEWAY, AGAIN BUCKING AND STALLING WITH THE TACHOMETER SWINGING WILDLY UP AND DOWN. FOR A THIRD TIME, I CALLED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE FOR A TOW TO THE DEALER, WHICH PROMISED A SEARCH TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURES, INVOLVEMENT OF THE DISTRICT MANAGER, AND AN ATTEMPT TO OBTAIN A DIFFERENT SENSOR MODEL IN CASE THE BATCH OF AVAILABLE SENSORS WAS "BAD". SUBSEQUENT PHONE CALLS TO THE DEALERSHIP HAVE NOT PRODUCED ANY ANSWER AS TO THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURES, DELAYS IN OBTAINING A SUITABLE REPLACEMENT PART, AND SO FAR, A TOTAL OF 18 INOPERABLE DAYS FOR MY NEW CAR. THIS FAILURE IS A SERIOUS ISSUE; A PERSON AT THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT "OTHER (HYUNDAI) VEHICLES WITH THE SAME ENGINE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM" ONE OF WHICH WAS THERE WHILE I WAS AT THE DEALER WAITING FOR MY SECOND RENTAL CAR. I REPEAT; THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE; SUCH SUDDEN LOSS OF ENGINE POWER IN TRAFFIC CAN HAVE FATAL RESULTS! *AK

THE MAIN PULLEY CAME DISCONNECTED AND FELL OFF ONTO THE STREET WITH NO WARING WHATSOEVER. LUCKILY I WAS PREPARING TO TURN LEFT AND WAS STOPPED IN THE LEFT TURN LANE. THERE WAS A BAD THUNK AND SHAKE AND THE CAR SHUT DOWN. HAD I BEEN MOVING, IT COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DIFFERENT STORY, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEED. IT IS A BRAND NEW CAR, I JUST HAD THE OIL CHANGED. EVERYTHING WAS FINE, I THOUGHT. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT SHOULD BE REPORTED TO YOU.

PRIOR TO RECEIVING RECALL 02V15, CONSUMER WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT, ANOTHER VEHICLE TRAVELLING 35 MPH STRUCK CONSUMER HEAD ON, THE SIDE DOOR AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY, CONSUMER STATES AT NO TIME SINCE PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE HAS THE SRS LIGHT ILLUMINATED, CONSUMER WAS INJURED IN THE ACCIDENT. *SLC *TS
CONSUMER SAYS THAT HE AND HIS WIFE STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES. THE BRAKES WERE SQUEALING VERY LOUD. CONSUMER SAYS THERE WAS SOMEWHAT A KNOCKING OR SOMETHING LOOSE WITHIN. ALSO THE CONSUMER HAD VEHICLE REPAIRED BUT TWO DAYS LATER THE NOISE RETURNED. *SCC
ON APRIL 28, 2001 I AND THREE OTHER PASSENGERS WERE RIDING IN THE VEHICLE. I WAS TRAVELING DOWN A LONG GRADE AT 35 TO 40 MILES PER HOUR. TOWARD THE BOTTOM OF THE GRADE THE ROAD CURVES TO THE RIGHT AND AT THE BOTTOM THERE IS A TRAFFIC SIGNAL. WHEN I CAME AROUND THE CURVE I SAW THAT THE LIGHT WAS GREEN AND PROCEEDED TO ACCELERATE IN ORDER TO GET UP THE APPROACHING UPGRADE. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE THE ENGINE REVVED VERY HIGH BUT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO SLOW DOWN. TANSMISSION HAD SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL ALTHOUGH THE SHIFTER STILL INDICATED THAT I WAS IN DRIVE. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT AUTOMATICALLY SHIFT OUT OF NEUTRAL. I HAD TO MANUALLY SHIFT INTO LOW GEAR. TWO DAYS LATER I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND, AFTER THREE DAYS, I WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG AND THAT THEY WOULD MAKE NO REPAIRS. ON FRIDAY MAY 4, 2001 I WAS CONTACTED BY THE HYUNDAI REGIONAL SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE WHO TRIED TO CONVINCE ME THAT THERE IS NOTHING THE MATTER WITH MY VEHICLE. HE TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE VEHICLES "ADAPTIVE LEARNING" FEATURE THAT CAUSED THE SHIFT AND THAT WHAT I EXPERIENCED WAS PERFECTLY NORMAL. I FIND IT VERY HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THE NEW CAR I OWN WAS DESIGNED TO SHIFT AND STAY IN NEUTRAL WHEN IT IS IN A SITUATION WHERE ACCELERATION IS NECESSARY. BOTH THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTUER CONTINUE TO INSIST THAT THERE IS NOTHING THE MATTER WITH THE VEHICLE AND REFUSE TO MAKE ANY REPAIRS. ALSO, ONE WEEK BEFORE THE INCIDENT , MY WIFE AND I WERE ON THE SAME ROAD AND THE VEHICLE DID NEARLY THE SAME THING. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE WAS THAT AFTER ABOUT A SECOND OR TWO OF STEPPING ON THE GAS PEDAL TRANSMISSION SHIFTED ITSELF BACK FROM NEUTRAL INTO DRIVE. PLEASE HELP.*AK
FLOOR SHIFT LEVER WOULD JUMP OUT OF GEAR WITHOUT BEING TOUCHED. IT WOULD FAIL TO REMAIN IN CORRECT GEAR. SOMETIMES CAN SLIGHTLY PUSH, AND WOULD JUMP OUT OF GEAR. BEEN TO DEALERSHIP, AND WAS INFORMED BY MECHANIC THAT FLOOR SHIFT LEVER WAS OPERATING NORMALLY. VEHICLE HAD ONLY 900 MILES. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED DURING NORMAL OPERATION VEHICLE FAILS TO START, PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT. DEALER HAS EXAMINED VEHICLE NUMEROUS TIMES, AND FAILED TO REMEDY PROBLEM. *AK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THEN VEHICLE BEGAN HAVINB PROBLEMS WITH NO POWER, STALLING, AND MAKING NOISES, DEALER REPLACED THE PURGE CONTROL VALVE, HOWEVER PROBLEM TILL CONTINUES. ENGINE FAILED AT 1633 MILES GOING 65 MPH ON MAJOR HIGHWAY. ACCORDING TO HYNDAI SERVICE THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH ENGINE SLEEVES IN EARLY PRODUCTION ENGINES. SLEEVES COME LOOSE CAUSING PISTONS TO SMASH SPARK PLUGS. NEW ENGINE INSTALLED, BUT DID NOT RUN PROPERLY. HYUNDAI SERVICE ORDERING SECOND NEW ENGINE. PROBLEM DIAGNOSED QUICKLY DUE TO ANOTHER 2001 SANTA FE WITH 3900 MILES IN SHOP WITH SAME PROBLEM. PEOPLES HYUNDAI IN FOLSOM, CA WERE VERY HELPFUL.*AK
