S10 APPROPRIATE HANDLING RE DEFECTIVE ENGINE-MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT AND ERRATIC RPM READING INVOLVING REDUCE ACCELERATION FM OWNER OF A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA LX. *KB THE CONSUMER STATED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES, ONLY TO BE TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. THE TAIL LIGHTS BURNED OUT, THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED WHEN THE PASSENGER SEAT WAS OCCUPIED, THE ESC LIGHT WOULD BLINK WHILE DRIVING IN THE RAIN AND DUE TO THE ESC LIGHT BEING ON , THE VEHICLE WOULD BECOME UN-DRIVABLE. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER'S SIDE FRONT AIR BAG INDICATOR LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES FOR THE FAILURE. THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT BELT BUCKLE AND THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR WAS REPLACED. IN ADDITION, FRONT PASSENGER'S SEAT SENSOR WAS REPROGRAMMED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 08V161000 (AIR BAGS); HOWEVER THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FULLY REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 100,000. UPDATED 10/24/13*CN
I HAVE A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA. THREE YEARS AGO, THE DRIVER'S SIDE SUNVISOR STOPPED STAYING IN PLACE, DROPPING IN FRONT OF ME AND CAUSING A POTENTIAL OBSTRUCTION. THE DEALER REPLACED THIS UNDER WARRANTY. LESS THAN A YEAR LATER, THE REPLACED VISOR DEVELOPED THE SAME PROBLEM. THE DEALER WILL NOT RESPOND TO MY REQUEST THAT IT BE FIXED AGAIN UNDER WARRANTY. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A MATERIAL DEFECT, AND IT COULD BE HAZARDOUS. *TR

MY AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON, IT WAS FIXED AT THE DEALERSHIP IN MAY 2007, IT REPEATEDLY GOES ON AND OFF. THE DEALERSHIP HAS INFORMED ME THAT IT IS NO LONGER COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE AIRBAG LIGHT PREVENTS ME FROM OBTAINING AN INSPECTION STICKER FROM THE STATE WITHOUT A LARGE EXPENSE. *TR

2006 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS THUMP NOISE IN REAR OF CAR. DEALERSHIP HAS ATTEMPTED 3 REPAIRS AND HAS BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL. *TR
FRONT BRAKES FAILED DUE TO BUILD-UP OF (SALT) CORROSION AT 11K MILES. DEALER HAD TO GRIND CRADLES TO CREATE CLEARANCE (AND LUBE) SO CALIPERS WOULD ENGAGE. DEALER SAID VEHICLE WOULD HAVE TO BE BROUGHT IN EVERY YEAR TO HAVE CRADLES CLEANED, AND THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE! THIS PROBLEM WAS DISCOVERED AFTER DRIVING DOWN STEEP ROAD AND REAR BRAKES WERE SMOKING EXCESSIVELY, DOING ALL THE WORK TO STOP THE VEHICLE (POORLY). REAR BRAKES SUBSEQUENTLY HAD TO BE REPLACED, WORN SO BADLY. FRONT BRAKES WERE LIKE NEW (BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T WORKING). *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGERS OCS SENSOR DID NOT DETECT AN OCCUPANT WHEN THE SEAT WAS BEING UTILIZED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT AND SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED ON THREE OCCASIONS BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 08V161000 (AIR BAGS).THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000. WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP OR SLOW TURN, "CHECK ENGINE" AND "ESC OFF" LIGHT COME ON. THE VEHICLE ACTS AS IF IT IS IN NEUTRAL, WITH NO GAS POWER OR BRAKE CONTROL, BUT THE CAR IS RUNNING AND ALL OTHER ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS ARE WORKING (WINDOWS, RADIO, ETC). IT SHIMMIES AND SHAKES. YOU HAVE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND RESTART NUMEROUS TIMES TO GET IT TO RUN PROPERLY. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINS ON FOR SEVERAL HOURS AND THEN SHUTS OFF. THIS STARTED ABOUT 6 MONTHS AFTER I PURCHASED THE USED CAR IN 2006, AND IS INTERMITTENT BUT STILL HAS THE PROBLEM. IT WILL ACT UP SEVERAL TIMES A DAY FOR MONTHS THEN NOTHING. THIS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A SAFETY ISSUE, HAVING TO STOP IN SINGLE LANES WITH NO SHOULDERS, ON RAILROAD TRACKS, OR INTERSECTIONS AND RESTART NUMEROUS TIMES TO GET IT RUNNING AGAIN. TOOK TO MERCED CA HYUNDAI THEY REPLACED TSP WIRING, WHICH DID NOT HELP. OF COURSE IT APPEARED OK AS IT TAKES TIME FOR THE PROBLEM TO REPEAT. HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO RETURN TO SHOP, WITH THE INCONVENIENCE OF HAVING TO TAKE TIME OFF WORK, DRIVE 30 MILES TO THE DEALER, AND PAY FOR CAR RENTAL. I LIVE IN A RURAL AREA AND BOUGHT A FAIRLY NEW CAR TO BE RELIABLE. THIS WAS NOT IT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT BOTH HEADLIGHTS FAILED TO ILLUMINATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO REPLACED THE HEADLIGHT BULBS. THE FAILURE RECURRED NUMEROUS TIMES AND ON EACH OCCURRENCE, THE BULB WAS REPLACED. THERE WAS A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 06V180000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING) HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. IN ADDITION, BOTH REAR DOORS WOULD ONLY UNLOCK MANUALLY AND THE BRAKE LIGHT FAILED TO OPERATE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS ENGAGED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 19,000. MA 09/25
PASSENGER AIR BAG FRONT SEAT AFTER GETTING HIT BY ANOTHER CAR THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. *TR
I BOUGHT A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MODEL YEAR IN AUGUST 2005. SINCE THAT TIME, I HAVE REPLACED THE LOW BEAM HEADLAMPS AT LEAST 4 TIMES. ON TWO OF THOSE FOUR OCCASIONS, THE HEADLAMPS BURNED OUT AFTER ONLY A FEW MONTHS OF USE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM AND HYUNDAI REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT. *TR
I AM CONCERNED THAT THE PASSENGER AIRBAG IS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY ON MY 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA LX. THERE ARE COUNTLESS TIMES THAT A PASSENGER IS SITTING NEXT TO WHILE I AM DRIVING AND THE "PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF" INDICATOR IS LIT SPECIFYING THAT THE AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY IF AN ACCIDENT HAPPENS. I ASKED HYUNDAI ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND THEY KEEP TELLING ME THAT THE "ECU HAS DETERMINED THAT YOUR PASSENGER IS SITTING IN A POSITION THAT WILL BE BETTER NOT TO HAVE THE AIRBAG DEPLOY. TRY ADJUSTING THE SEAT AND HAVE THE PASSENGER MOVE AROUND ETC". OR THEY TELL ME THAT MY PASSENGER DOES NOT WEIGHT ENOUGH (115 LBS IS PLENTY). THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP IN RECTIFYING THIS SITUATION. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 26,000. THE VEHICLE MAKES A LOUD NOISE WHEN BRAKING. THE DEALER IS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 19,000. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, HE HEARD A LOUD BANGING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE NOISE WAS LOUDER WHILE MAKING A TURN WITH A PASSENGER SEATED IN THE REAR. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE ON TWO OCCASIONS; THE FIRST TIME THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE AND THE SECOND TIME THE DEALER ADJUSTED THE REAR SUSPENSION. THE SUSPENSION ADJUSTMENT FAILED TO SOLVE THE FAILURE. AS OF OCTOBER 9, 2007, THE DEALER HAD NOT REPAIRED THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 12,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 16,997. THE DEALER STATED THE FRONT RIGHT DOOR LOCK INOPERABLE, PASSENGER SEAT AREA MAKES A RATTLING SOUND, RIGHT TRUNK TRIM VIBRATES WHEN VEHICLE IN MOTION AND HEARS KNOCKING SOUND IN THE ENGINE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH DURING NORMAL WEATHER CONDITIONS SHE HEARD A NOISE. SHE ALSO STATED THAT IT DID NOT AFFECT HER DRIVING. SHE MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH HER LOCAL MECHANIC WHO ADVISED HER THAT THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM HER BRAKES AND THE ROTORS AND REPLACED THEM. SHE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY ADVISED HER THAT THE BRAKES WERE NOT UNDER WARRANTY. SHE ALSO STATED THAT THE REAR BRAKES AND ROTORS WERE REPLACED FOUR TIMES AND THE FRONT BRAKES AND ROTORS WERE REPLACED THREE TIMES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 19,830. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,000.

THE DEALER HAD NOT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE 40,000.*AK
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AT 10 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A HUMMING NOISE NEAR THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE MECHANIC AND THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. THE CONTACT HEARD THE NOISE AGAIN AND RETURNED TO THE MECHANIC. THE BRAKES WERE CHANGED, BUT THE NOISE RECURRED. THE CONTACT HAS TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE MECHANIC NUMEROUS TIMES AND IS STILL WAITING FOR IT TO BE PROPERLY REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 21,967 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,053.
IN CAR THERMOMETER NOT ACCURATE. IT IS OFF BY OVER 20 DEGREES. WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPPED WELL BELOW 0, NOTHING HAS BEEN ACCURATE. SENSORS HAVE BEEN CLEANED, BUT PROBLEM STILL EXIST. *TR
TL* - WHILE DRIVING UP A HILL AT A SPEED OF 30 MPH, THE CONTACT WAS APPLYING THE BRAKE PEDAL TO SLOW DOWN, BUT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK, CAUSING THE ENGINE TO ROAR LOUDLY. THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED UNEXPECTEDLY AND THE CONTACT TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THE PEDAL WOULD ONLY GO DOWN APPROXIMATELY AN INCH. THE CONTACT CONTINUED TO APPLY BRAKE PEDAL WITH BOTH FEET, BUT WITH NO RESULTS. AT THIS POINT CONTACT WENT TO THE MIDDLE LANE OF THE ROAD CHANGING THE VEHICLE FROM AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TO MANUAL MODE. THE CONTACT DOWN SHIFTED FROM 5 TO 4 GEAR WHILE THE ENGINE WAS STILL REVVING . AT THIS POINT CONTACT TURN THE IGNITION OFF, BUT THE ENGINE DIDN'T GO OFF CAUSING THE CONTACT TO REAR END ANOTHER VEHICLE AT A SPEED OF 30 MPH. TWICE BEFORE THIS ACCIDENT, THE CONTACT EXPERIENCE THE BATTERY LOSING POWER TO THE VEHICLE. THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED 24 HOURS AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE AND THE SECOND WAS IN DECEMBER 06. WHEN THE CONTACT TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALER THEY STATED THAT THERE WASN'T ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT CAN PROVIDE COPIES OF INVOICE REPAIR AND POLICE REPORT. *JB UPDATED 02/21/07. *JB
TL*- THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA LX, HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING. WHILE DRIVING AT 10 MPH AND TRYING TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN THE VEHICLE STARTED TO MAKE A RACING ROARING NOISE. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON TWO OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO GO 10 MPH, BUT HE COULDN'T STOP IT. HE APPLIED THE BRAKES, AND THE VEHICLE WOULDN'T STOP. THE CONTACT SAT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FOR A FEW MINUTES, TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE LET IT SIT. HE STARTED THE VEHICLE, AND DROVE HOME WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. THE CONTACT DID TAKE THE VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY DID A DIAGNOSTIC AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED ON 2 OCCASIONS AND THE DEALERSHIP DID CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER TOLD THE DEALERSHIP TO MAKE SURE THE MOTOR MOUNTS WERE TIGHTENED, AND TO CHECK AND CLEAN ALL TERMINALS. THIS WAS DONE IN JANUARY 10, 2007. THE CONTACT HASN'T HAD ANY OTHER PROBLEMS SINCE. THE CONTACT WANTED NHTSA TO BE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, HE HAS SENT THE MANUFACTURER A LETTER REGARDING THIS PROBLEM ON 01/20/07 AND HADN'T GOTTEN ANY RESPONSE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 7050.*AK
TL* - THE CONTACT IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG LIGHT, IT WOULD NOT TURN OFF. THE CAR WAS TAKEN BACK TO DEALERSHIP TWICE (MEDILD HYUNDAI), AND THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THAT SEAT COVER WAS THE REASON WHY THE LIGHT STILL ON. THE CONTACT SAID THAT SHE TOOK THE SEAT COVER OFF AND THE LIGHT STILL DID NOT GO OFF. CONTACT SAID THAT THE DEALER TOLD HER THAT A PERSON WOULD HAVE TO BE AT LEAST 110 POUNDS FOR THE AIR BAG TO WORK. THE CONTACT DOSE NOT HAVE RECORD OF SERVICE, BECAUSE CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE MAINLY OCCURS IN COLD SNOWY WEATHER. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY STATED THAT THEY WERE UNAWARE OF THIS TYPE OF FAILURE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT, THE RADIO AND THE HEADLIGHTS SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE, BUT COULD NOT PROVIDE A REMEDY. THEY HAVE INSPECTED THE VEHICLE ON FIVE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. THE FOLLOWING PARTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED: THE ALTERNATOR, FUSE BOX, COMPUTER, ELECTRICAL HARNESS, AND THE BATTERY. THE FAILURE CONTINUES TO OCCUR. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 15,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 9,000.
THIS COMPLAINT APPLIES TO A 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA LIMITED (NO OPTION FOR 2007 WAS AVAILABLE IN DROP DOWN MENU) (ISSUE 1) AT OR AROUND THE INITIAL FEW DAYS AFTER TAKING DELIVERY I BEGAN TO NOTICE ABRUPT VIBRATION AND SHAKING COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL; SUBSTANTIAL ENOUGH TO FEEL IN THE SEAT. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO DEALERSHIP ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM BUT THEY REPORTED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND REPORTED THE VEHICLE TO BE IN MANUFACTURER SPECIFICATION. NONETHELESS, DEALER ATTEMPTED WHEEL BALANCE AND RADIAL FORCE BALANCE AS A "GOOD WILL GESTURE." PROBLEM IS NOW MORE ARTICULATED AND THE ISSUE REMAINS UNRESOLVED. (ISSUE 2) ENGINE EMITS A RATTLE NOISE SIMILAR TO LIFTER CLATTER UPON START AND CONTINUES THROUGHOUT OPERATION; PARTICULARLY IN COLDER WEATHER. TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER WAS REPLACED AND ONE NOISE WAS RESOLVED BUT THE CONTINUAL NATURE OF THE LIFTER CLATTER REMAINS. DEALERSHIP AND HYUNDAI REPRESENTATIVE REPORTED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THE ISSUE REMAINS UNRESOLVED. (ISSUE 3) FUEL SLOSHING COMING FROM THE FUEL TANK. MANUFACTURER AND DEALER CLAIMS THIS TO BE NORMAL AND NOT A SAFETY RISK. SOUND IS MORE PRONOUNCED AT OR AROUND 3/4 TANK. BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER DIRECTLY AND REMAINS UNRESOLVED. *NM

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE TECHNICIAN DISCOVERED NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V161000 (AIR BAGS); HOWEVER, THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE TECHNICIAN FURTHER STATED THAT THE OCCUPANT MUST BE POSITIONED IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT FOR THE RECALL REMEDY. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED OF THE SAFETY RISK INVOLVED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 20,015.

THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT INFORMED HIM THAT THEY HAD TO ORDER A SEAT SENSOR FOR VEHICLE. THE DEALERSHIP GAVE HIM A LOANER VEHICLE, 2006 OR 2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE, AND HE NOTICED THAT THE SENSOR LIGHT HAD THE SAME FAILURE AS HIS SONATA. THE CONTACT DID TAKE THE SANTA FE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHO GAVE HIM ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE SECOND LOANER VEHICLE WAS A 2007 SONATA, AND HE NOTICED THE SAME FAILURE. I PURCHASED A NEW 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA IN JUNE 2006. IMMEDIATELY AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR I NOTICED UPON FILLING UP THE TANK WITH GAS I COULD HEAR A LOT OF NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR. WE NOTICED A CRACK STARTING IN THE PASSENGER SIDE DASHBOARD WHERE THE AIRBAG WAS LOCATED. THE CRASH PAD WAS REPLACED ON 9/29/06 UNDER WARRANTY. A NEW CRACK STARTED IN 2010 WHICH CONTINUED TO EXPAND & SPREAD. ON 10/12/11, WE RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY VERIFIED THE SITUATION. HOWEVER, WE WERE TOLD THAT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS NOW "OFF WARRANTY," REGARDLESS THAT IT WAS IN THE EXACT SAME LOCATION AS THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM, THEY COULD NOT RE-ADDRESS THE ISSUE UNLESS WE PAID FOR THE REPAIR FIRST & THEN COULD BE CONSIDERED UNDER THE "GOOD WILL CONSIDERATION POLICY". WE STRONGLY OBJECTED TO THIS POLICY, BUT WERE TOLD THAT NOTHING FURTHER COULD BE DONE. A FIRE STARTED IN THE ENGINE OF MY TWO-MONTH-OLD 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA AFTER IT HAD BEEN PARKED FOR APPROXIMATELY FIVE HOURS. ON THE NIGHT THAT THIS HAPPENED, I HAD DRIVEN MY SONATA THREE HOURS FROM ATLANTA, GA TO ALBANY, GA AND PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY AT ABOUT 5:30PM. I SUBSEQUENTLY RAN A LOCAL ERRAND AND PARKED MY CAR FOR THE EVENING AT 7:30PM. THE CAR WAS PARKED ABOUT 2.5-3 FEET BEHIND MY MOTHER'S 1994 CHEVROLET CORSICA. AROUND 12:30 MIDNIGHT, MY NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR WAS BANGING ON MY WINDOW, YELLING, "YOU HAVE TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE, YOUR CAR IS ON FIRE!" FLAMES SHOT UP 5-6 FEET IN THE AIR AND IGNITED THE TRUNK OF MY MOTHER'S CAR. TREES NEARBY WERE SINGED, AND MELTED METAL AND RUBBER DAMAGED THE DRIVEWAY. THANKS TO MY NEIGHBOR'S QUICK ACTION, THE FLAMES DID NOT REACH THE FUEL TANK OF MY MOTHER'S CAR OR OUR HOUSE, THEREBY AVERTING A REAL DISASTER. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND DETERMINED THAT THE FIRE STARTED IN THE ENGINE. IT BECAME CLEAR THAT THE LOCAL SERVICE CENTER, MANUFACTURER AND INSURANCE COMPANY WERE NOT THE PARTIES RESPONSIBLE FOR CONDUCTING THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE EXACT CAUSE OF THE FIRE. I NOTICED AROUND THIS TIME THAT THE LATCH HOLDING THE CENTER CONSOLE SHUT IN MY 06 SONATA WAS LOOSE. I TRIED TO PUT IT BACK INTO PLACE, BUT IT THEN BROKE FREE IN MY HANDS. THE CONSOLE WILL FLING OPEN OVER MOST SPEED BUMPS. I'M WORRIED IN A CRASH THAT ANYTHING INSIDE OF IT WILL FLY ALL OVER THE PLACE. PLUS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR THIS TO SURPRISE THE DRIVER AND CAUSE A CRASH.
