I have a 2007 Hyundai Sonata SE v6 3.3L and on January 9th, 2026 I had an incident where on the road my charging system light on signifying alternator failure. I made it home, but the battery was dead which was recently purchased. After recharging the battery I conducted tests with a multimeter and have determined the alternator has failed. The alternator has accrued a coating of oil overtime that was unknown until my research into the matter of root cause. Hyundai manufactures a V6 engine family called Lamba in which a version called Lambda MPi G6DB was introduced in 2007–2009 Hyundai Santa Fe (CM) and 2005–2009 Hyundai Sonata (NF) models. In 2023 Hyundai issued a recall for the 2007-2009 Santa Fe for a Cylinder Head Cover Oil Leak Repair where oil drips from the valve cover directly onto the alternator causing it to fail. I have a 2007 Hyundai Sonata 3.3L V6 engine where the very same issue has occurred with photo evidence that has caused my alternator to fail and have tested the issue. This vehicle model was not included in the recall despite the engine being exactly the same as the recalled model, the year being the exact same as the Santa Fe, and the alternator in the exact placement where the oil drips into the alternator causing failure just like the Santa Fe recall. The Santa Fe recall with the same issue is documented with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration below: [XXX] Hyundai has yet to issue the same recall for the Hyundai Sonata brand of vehicles, despite the same issue occurring and a known issue with the Lambda MPi G6DB engine design effecting multiple models in the same way documented across multiple owners of these vehicles with various fixes suggested on Youtube, Reddit, and enthusiast forums for this engineering failure that causes considerable risk if the alternator fails in operation on roadways. I have been encountering issues with my 2007 Hyundai Sonata SE in the following manners: 1- At times the brake lights will be on and the car will have anyone inside. 2- My ESC OFF light comes on will not go off. 3- When using my headlights the cruise control will not work. (Specifically when the automatic lights would come on the cruise goes off) 4-At random times the key will not turn. All the above mentioned issues concern the electrical system!, Speed Control!, and lighting systems. All are available for inspection upon request. My safety and the safety of others has been put at risk because of system failures causing the car to operate improperly and dangerously. I have not had the extra money to take it to the dealership. No other reports have been made. The only warning light is the ESC OFF light comes on occasionally. This light began coming on 6 months ago.
The contact owns a 2007 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds the vehicle drove sluggish and unresponsive and would not properly accelerate. Upon inspection it was discovered that engine oil from the valve cover gasket had leaked onto the alternator. The vehicle was taken to the local mechanic who diagnosed that the alternator was damaged due to the presence of oil inside and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The contact indicated that the vehicle was previously serviced by the manufacturer to prevent the failure from occurring but the failure had occurred on two separate occasions. No further information was available. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 151,000.
THE ESC OFF LIGHT GOES ON SOMETIMES WHEN DRIVING AND PUSHING THE BUTTON DOESN'T DO ANYTHING. MY PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT FLASHES EVEN WHEN NO ONE'S SITTING ON THE SEAT.

VALVE COVER LEAKS ONTO ALTERNATOR, CAN CAUSE SUDDEN POWER LOSS AND PREMATURE ALTERNATOR FAILURE. I'VE BEEN RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE AND OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS EXACT THING HAPPEN. APPARENTLY ONCE YOU GET THE VALVE COVER GASKET FIXED, IT WILL FAIL AGAIN IN ANOTHER YEAR OR SO. THERE IS A DEFECT EITHER IN THE GASKET OR THE VALVE COVER MATING SURFACE. CURRENTLY MY CAR IS ONLY AT THE STAGE OF OIL LEAKING FROM COVER GASKET AND GETTING ONTO THE ALTERNATOR. NO FURTHER FAILURE HAS HAPPENED YET. MY CAR HAS 67,000 MILES.

TAKARA RECALL . AROUND JUNE OF 2019 MY HYUNDAI SONATA STARTED MESSING UP IT STARTED WITH THE FUEL PUMP THEN FUSES AND ALSO THE BATTERY LIGHT STAYS DIM ON THE DASH TODAY THE BREAK LIGHTS AND DASH LIGHT WOULDNT GO ON
WHEN I EXIT MY CAR AND MY HEADLIGHT ARE TURNED TO OFF POSITION AND CLOSE DOOR, MY RUNNING LIGHTS STAY ON. WHICH I HAVE JAD TO CHARGR MY BATTERY DUE YO THIS. SO ER THOUGHT IT WAS THE HEADLAMP SWITCH. STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. SO LOOKED UP THE PROBLEM AND FOUND A COUPLE DIFFERENT FORUMS STATING THAT THIS IS A RELAY PROBLEM. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT THIS RELAY IS INTEGRATED INTO THE FUSE BOX. SO IN ORDER FPR THIS PROBLEM TO BE FIXED I AM TOLD I HAVE TO REPLACE A FUSE BOX. I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THOS ISSUE. THIS HAPPENES EVERY TIME I EXIT MY VECHICLE AFTER DRIVING IT. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. 2. MY DRIVERS SIDE AND PASSENGER VISORS DO NOT STAY UP. I HAVE GOTTEN HIT IN THE HEAD. THIS SHOULD ALSO BE ON RECALL.
VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO HYUNDAI BECAUSE THE AIRBAG LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED, AND THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT REMINDER LIGHT WOULD BLINK WHEN NO ONE WAS IN THE SEAT. AFTER A DIAGNOSTIC TEST, THE DEALERSHIP ADVISED THIS WAS DUE TO A FAULTY AIRBAG SENSOR IN THE PASSENGER SEAT, THAT WAS PART OF THE ACTUAL SEAT. THE REPLACEMENT SEAT CUSHION WAS GOING TO COST UPWARDS OF $1200, WITH THE INSTALLED PRICE OF OVER $1500! AFTER LOOKING AT THE NHTSA COMPLAINTS, I SAW I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM. A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH ALSO SHOWED A PLETHORA OF OTHER COMPLAINTS IN REGARDS TO THIS ISSUE. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A MAJOR ISSUE WITH THE SENSORS/AIRBAG/SEAT BELT SYSTEM IN THESE VEHICLES, AND I AM HOPING A RECALL WILL BE ISSUED. HYUNDAI COULD NOT TELL ME IF THIS ISSUE WOULD AFFECT MY AIRBAG SYSTEM OR NOT. THANK YOU.

AIRBAG ON THE PASSAGE SIDE WON'T GO OFF, SEATBELT GET STUCK AT TIME, PAINT PEELING OFF THE BODY BACK ,SIDE AND TOP AND THE WINDOW ON THE PASSAGE SIDE WON'T GO DOWN
APRIL 3, 2018: TWO YEARS AGO WE REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR IN OUR CAR. SUDDENLY WE ARE HAVING ISSUES WITH THE BATTERY LIGHT AND SEAT BELT WARNING LIGHTS COMING ON AND OFF OR STAYING ON. WE WENT ONLINE TO SEE IF THERE WERE COMPLAINTS OR ISSUES OF THE SAME KIND. WE FIND THAT OTHERS HAVE COMPLAINED WITH THE OIL VALVE AND ALTERNATOR PROBLEM AS WELL AS THE INDICATOR LIGHTS COMING ON AND OFF OR STAYING ON. SO WE TOOK THE ALTERNATOR OUT AND RETURNED IT BECAUSE THANKFULLY IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. THEREFORE, THIS IS NOW THE THIRD ALTERNATOR FOR OUR CAR. HOWEVER, IF THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM, WE WANT TO BE PART OF DOCUMENTED CASES WITH THE SAME ISSUE. AS OF TODAY, THE CAR IS RUNNING FINE WITH THE NEWEST ALTERNATOR. OUR FRUSTRATION IS WITH THE FACT THAT THIS IS THE SECOND ONE IN TWO YEARS TO HAVE TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF WHATEVER REASON. THANKS...
WHILE DRIVING THE ESC OFF LIGHT COMES ON AND THE BRAKE LIGHTS STAY ON WHILE DRIVING.
I FIRST NOTICED THE VALVE COVER GASKET LEAKING ONTO THE ALTERNATOR AT ABOUT 121,000 MILES AND AT 140.000 MILES I HAD THE VALVE COVER GASKET REPLACED, THERMOSTAT, INTAKE PLENNOM GASKET ALSO. AND HAD THE ALTERNATOR REPLACED AFTER IT FAILED BECAUSE OF THE OIL LEAKING ONTO IT AT 156,092. LUCKILY I JUST DROVE BY MY MECHANICS GARAGE AT ABOUT 50 MPH AND ABOUT A MILE PASSED HIS GARAGE THE CAR STARTED TO BUCK AND STALL AND ALL THE DASH BOARD LIGHTS WERE FLASHING ALONG WITH THE CD TURNING ON AND OFF ALONG WITH THE SEAT BELT LIGHT WHICH WAS FLASHING ON AND OFF WHEN IT WAS BUCKLED FOR ABOUT 1 MONTH PRIOR TO THIS FAILURE. I ACTUALLY MADE IT TO HIS GARAGE BEFORE IT SHUT DOWN IN HIS PARKING LOT.
FOR THE SECOND TIME, I HAVE HAD OIL LEAKING OUT OF THE VALVE COVER OR TIMING BELT COVER ONTO THE ALTERNATOR. SO MUCH SO, THAT THE ALTERNATOR BECOMES SOAKED AND "SHORTS OUT" ACCORDING TO A HYUNDAI DEALER. MECHANICS WHO HAVE REPAIRED THIS ALL AGREE THAT THIS IS A HAZARD AND PUBLIC SAFETY ISSUE. "FIRE RISK" AND "SUDDEN COMPLETE LOSS OF CONTROL AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS" WERE BOTH MENTIONED. HYUNDAI STATES THAT MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY DUE TO MILEAGE AND SAYS THAT THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM DESPITE THE OBVIOUS RISKS THAT THEIR MECHANICS AND OTHER MECHANICS MENTION. AFTER VERY LITTLE EFFORT IN RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET, IT IMMEDIATELY BECAME OBVIOUS THAT THIS IS A COMMON RECALL FOR HYUNDAI CONCERNING THIS ENGINE(3.3L V6). THE RECALLS NAME OTHER HYUNDAI PRODUCTS BUT FOR SOME REASON SKIP MY VEHICLE EVEN THOUGH TWO REPS AT HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE STATE THAT "YOU ARE DESCRIBING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM". WE HAVE SPENT CLOSE TO $1000 ON THIS ONE ISSUE IN THE LAST YEAR. IT NEARLY CAUSED MY WIFE TO BE STRANDED ON THE INTERSTATE 10HRS FROM HOME. AND HYUNDAI ADMITS THAT IT IS AN ISSUE BUT BECAUSE MY VIN IS NOT LISTED, THEY REFUSE TO HELP FIX OR REFUND ANY THING THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN SPENT ON THIS MANUFACTURE DEFECT. AGAIN, I EMPHASIZE THAT THIS IS A PUBLIC SAFETY HAZARD THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. DESPITE RECENT REPAIR, THIS PROBLEM STILL CONTINUES. THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING AT 70MPH EACH TIME THIS ISSUE OCCURRED. I HAVE RECORDS OF REPAIR FROM INDEPENDENT MECHANICS AND STATEMENT FROM HYUNDAI STATING THIS PROBLEM. THIS OCCURRED AT 118,000 AND 132,000 MILES. IT SEEMS LIKE IT OCCURRED PRIOR TO THIS AS WELL(LOOKING FOR RECORDS).
WHEN THERE IS MOISTURE IN THE AIR, MY CAR BATTERY AND SEAT BELT WARNING LIGHTS COME ON. I LOSE MY POWER STEERING, MY WIPERS GO VERY SLOW AND A BELT STARTS TO SQUEAL. ALSO, AFTER ABOUT 30 MINUTES, THE RADIO STOPS WORKING AND ALL INDICATOR LIGHTS COME ON. WHEN IT IS RAINING, I AM UNABLE TO USE MY DEFROST OR AIR CONDITIONING AS WELL.

THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY SERVICED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 09V122000 (SERVICES BRAKES, HYDRAULIC) AND 09V280000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
MY AIR BAG LIGHT HAS BEEN ON FOR OVER A YEAR. COME TO FIND OUT MY AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE IS FAULTY. AN ASE CERTIFIED MECHANIC GRACEFULLY CHECKED MY AIR BAG CODES FOR FREE. THIS IS NOW PUTTING MY LIFE AND ANYONE RIDING WITH ME IN DANGER SEEING AS NONE OF MY AIR BAGS WILL DEPLOY. ACCORDING TO SEVERAL FORUMS I'VE SEEN, THIS IS NOT A NEW PROBLEM. HYUNDAI NEEDS TO SEND OUT A RECALL ON SOMETHING THAT SHOULD NEVER FAIL. MY VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN A COLLISION.

MY RESEARCH HAS UNCOVERED MANY HYUNDAI VEHICLES HAVING RECALLS WITH THE SAME ENGINE SPECS BUT SONATA IS NOT COVERED. WHY IS THIS? WHY ARE SO MANY CONSUMERS PAYING FOR THIS PROBLEM ON THE SONATA WHEN OTHER HYUNDAI VEHICLE (SANTA FE; VERACRUZ) HAVING IDENTICAL ENGINE SETUPS ARE BEING RECALLED? I REALIZE MY SONATA IS ALMOST 10 YEARS OLD BUT SHOULDN'T IT STILL BE A CONSIDERATION?
