The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to provide the contact with a cause for the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 58,000.
There is an issue with this vehicle's panoramic sunroof and lift-gate windows spontaneously exploding while traveling. These incidents occur within 3 weeks of each other. The first incident occurred on Nov 28th with my liftgate glass shattering on its own while traveling with my dog on the interstate. I was maintaining a speed of 70 mph and just made a lane change. It was just an unexpected loud crunch sound, and while checking the rearview mirror; I noticed my window was shattered. I pulled over to check my vehicle, and no point of contact would have indicated something smashed into it. I had to safely leave the interstate to return home with this unstable glass that was falling apart into my vehicle. There was absolutely nothing that cause that glass to shatter, it just exploded on its own. The second incident occurred on Dec 15th with me once again traveling on the interstate with my pet after making a lane change my sunroof just exploded and glass shards just start pouring into my vehicle on top of me and my pet. Again, nothing fell onto my vehicle. the sunroof just exploded. I had to exit the interstate and drive all the way home with glass EVERYWHERE. I had glass in my hair, on my face, and falling inside of my clothes, and I had to sit on the glass shards piled up in my seat. When I returned home, I had tiny microabrasion scratches over my exposed skin. The panel that holds up the glass came off and fell when I just exited the car. I will be contacting my vehicle manufacturer to find out why the heck this happened and hopefully something will be done about this. Luckily, I was not shaken up enough to lose control of my vehicle when these incidents occur. I'm now afraid to drive my vehicle. After all, I only have the bottom half of my sunroof left and I'm worried this will happen again, and that glass is the only one left protecting the interior of my car from the elements.

I WAS TRAVELLING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT AROUND 70 MPH ON A CLEAR MILD DAY. THERE WERE NO VEHICLES NEAR ME. I SUDDENLY HEARD A LOUD *POP* *POP*. I LOOKED IN THE MIRRORS IN CONFUSION THINKING I HAD BEEN OR HIT OR SHOT AT. THEN GLASS STARTED FALLING ON ME AND INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR THROUGH THE SIDES OF THE SUNROOF CANVAS. I PULLED OVER TO FIND MY FRONT SUNROOF PANEL HAD SHATTERED INTO A MILLION PIECES. THERE WAS NO WAY A PROJECTILE IT. NO VEHICLES CLOSE ENOUGH IN FRONT AND NO TREES OVER THAT LANE. NOTHING SEEN BY ME EITHER. JUST A RANDOM EXPLOSION OF GLASS. NO EXTREME TEMPS EITHER.

AS A RESULT, THE SUN ROOF COULD NOT CLOSE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO REMOVE THE PIECE OF FRACTURED HOUSING AND CLOSE THE SUN ROOF. THE HYUNDAI VELOSTER 2012 HAD A RECALL A FEW YEARS AGO CONCERNING THE SUDDEN EXPLOSION OF THE PANORAMIC SUNROOF. I TOOK IN MY VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY TO BE CHECKED OUT AND WAS TOLD THE SUNROOF WAS FINE. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT ABOUT 65/70 MILES PER HOUR ON THE HIGHWAY DURING RUSH HOUR, AN EXTREMELY LOUD BANG OCCURRED. I IMMEDIATELY ASSOCIATED THE LOUD BANG AS A GUN SHOT. GLASS FROM THE CEILING FELL INTO THE VEHICLE AND ON MY BODY AS THE SUNROOF COVER RIPPED OPEN. I WAS SO STARTLED, THAT I DUCKED TRYING TO PROTECT MYSELF AS GLASS WAS FALLING ONTO ME WHILE DRIVING. I WAS ABLE TO TURN ON MY HAZARDS AND PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. ALTHOUGH, I DID NOT SPEAK TO ANY WITNESSES, I AM CERTAIN THE SEMI-TRUCK DRIVING BESIDE ME SAW WHAT OCCURRED AS HE TURNED ON HIS HAZARDS AND SLOWED DOWN TO LET ME OVER. I WAS LITERALLY SHAKING FROM BEING SO SCARED AND CAUGHT OFF GUARD. I GOT OUT OF THE CAR TO SEE WHAT HAD OCCURRED AND MY SUNROOF HAD EXPLODED. THE ENTIRE GLASS PORTION OF THE SUNROOF WAS GONE EXCEPT FOR THE EDGES, WHICH WERE LEFT CRACKED. I ATTEMPTED TO TAKE A PICTURE, BUT IT WAS DARK AND I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY, WHICH WAS NOT SAFE. MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN AT THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP SINCE 12/21/16. I COULD NOT REACH ANYONE AT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, EVEN THOUGH I CALLED DURING HOURS OF OPERATION. I WAS THEN INSTRUCTED TO LEAVE THE VEHICLE OVER NIGHT. AS OF 5:48 PM ON 12/22/16, I WAS TOLD THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT IS WAITING ON INSTRUCTION FROM HYUNDAI'S CORPORATE OFFICE AND HAVE NOT BEEN PROVIDED A VEHICLE. ALTHOUGH, I DID NOT SUFFER ANY SERIOUS INJURIES, I AM VERY WORRIED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF OTHERS DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. NOT ONLY IS THE GLASS ITSELF DANGEROUS, BUT THE SOUND WAS SO STARTLING IT COULD CAUSE SOMEONE TO VEER OFF INTO OTHER VEHICLES CAUSING GREAT BODILY INJURIES. I HAD NOT OPENED THE SUNROOF FOR DAYS, PERHAPS EVEN WEEKS AS IT HAS BEEN VERY COLD. *TR

THEN THE GLASS FROM THE SUNROOF STARTED TO FALL INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR. THERE WAS DAMAGE TO FABRIC LINER THAT CONCEALS THE SUNROOF, AND THE REAR SPOILER. THERE MIGHT BE OTHER DAMAGE YET TO BE DISCOVERED.

CONTROL OF THE CAR WAS MAINTAINED AND SINCE I DID NOT WANT TO PULL OVER ON A BUSY HIGHWAY I PROCEEDED TO DRIVE DIRECTLY TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IN FAIRFAX, VA. WHILE DRIVING, SHATTERED GLASS CONTINUED TO SLIDE DOWN OUR BACKS (ME AND ONE PASSENGER). AFTER WE PARKED AND EXITED THE CAR WE HAD TO SHAKE THE SHARDS OF GLASS FROM OUR HAIR AND CLOTHES. MY PASSENGER AND I WERE ABLE TO REMAIN CALM THROUGH THIS ORDEAL BUT I WAS STILL TREMBLING WHEN WE ARRIVED AT THE DEALERSHIP. ON FEB. 8, 2013 THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP (CHECKERED FLAG HYUNDAI) AND THE SUNROOF WAS INSPECTED FOR A RECALL BY HYUNDAI. AFTER THE RECALL INSPECTION WAS COMPLETE IT WAS REPORTED THAT THE SUNROOF HAD PASSED AND WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALLED BATCH OF GLASS. CLEARLY THE PROCEDURE HYUNDAI CREATED TO TEST FOR THIS PROBLEM WAS NOT SUFFICIENT AND DID NOT CATCH ALL THE PROBLEM GLASS. *TR

DRIVING AT 70MPH SOUTHBOUND ON I-5 NEAR ALBANY OR THE SUNROOF SUDDENLY IMPLODED, SHOWERING THE INSIDE OF THE CAR WITH GLASS. THE SUNROOF WAS CLOSED AS WERE ALL OF THE WINDOWS AND THE SHADE WAS OPEN. DESPITE THE TRAFFIC I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND MY PASSENGER AND I COULD SHAKE OUT THE PIECES OF GLASS FROM OUR HAIR AND CLOTHES. APART FROM SOME SMALL CUTS THERE WERE NO SERIOUS INJURIES. THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF THE CAR IS COVERED IN BITS OF BROKEN GLASS- THANKFULLY WE DIDN'T HAVE ANYONE IN THE BACK SEATS. UPON HAVING THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE DEALER INSPECT THE ROOF, I WAS TOLD TO CONTACT MY INSURANCE COMPANY AND SEE IF I HAVE COVERAGE FOR THE GLASS. WHEN THE SUNROOF RECALL CAME OUT LAST YEAR I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE IN IMMEDIATELY AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS OKAY, SO THIS APPARENTLY ABSOLVES HYUNDAI FROM RESPONSIBILITY WHEN IT FAILS AS MINE DID. WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS WHY THIS ROOF IS NOT MADE OF LAMINATED GLASS OR SOMEHOW COATED SO THAT IF IT WERE TO SHATTER GLASS WOULDN'T ENTER THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. *TR

CAR WAS TAKEN TO A HYUNDAI DEALER, WHERE THEY ENDED UP REPLACING THE SUNROOF BECAUSE IT WAS DEFECTIVE. NOVEMBER 25,2014, WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, WHEN SUNROOF BLEW UP, SENDING GLASS FLYING THROUGHOUT THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF CAR. WIFE HAD SMALL CUTS TO FACE AND ARMS, WITH GLASS PIECES THROUGHOUT HER HAIR AND CLOTHES. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 2012 HYUNDAI VELOSTER ON A PAVED ROAD AT 45 MPH. THE SCREEN FOR THE SUNROOF WAS OPEN BUT THE GLASS WAS CLOSED. ALL OF A SUDDEN GLASS JUST RAINS DOWN ON ME CAUSING SMALL CUTS TO MY ARMS AND FACE, SMALL SHARDS OF GLASS ARE STILL EMBEDDED IN MY CELL PHONE SCREEN PROTECTOR.
