Front passenger air bag occupancy sensor failure. Sensor is located on front passages seat and activates or deactivates passenger air bags based on occupancy and or weight. The vehicle has less than 90,000 miles. Passenger airbag/seat belt warning lamp on. Passenger airbag off indicator light remain on even when passenger seated. Repair cost estimated over $5,000. Vehicle will not pass inspection.
I am the original owner of this 2009 G37 sedan with only 12K miles. This car has never been in an accident. It is perfectly maintained and sits in a garage 99% of the time. Last week the airbag light flashed on. The dealer said the error code was B1018 (Occupant Classification Sensor malfunction). The cost of the passenger seat cushion alone is $7,500. This problem was also found on the 2007 & 2008 G37 models and part of a NHTSA recall (#08V521000). I found this problem all over the internet and this NHTSA site for this model year G37. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM. Why isn't this part of the 2007/2008 recall when the sensor is bad in both instances?
WHEN IT RAINS HEAVY WATER GETS INSIDE THE CAR ON BOTH THE DRIVERS SIDE AND PASSENGERS SIDE LEAVING THE FLOOR EXTREMELY WET. IT IS GETTING THE WIRES WET. MANY INFINITI OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING AND BELIEVE INIFINITI NEEDS TO MAKE A RECALL.
THE PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT IS BLINKING DUE TO A FAULTY SENSOR CONTAINED IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. IF THIS LIGHT DOES NOT TURN OFF, NO AIRBAGS WILL DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT, WHICH IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. INFINITI CHARGES MORE THAN $7000 TO REPLACE THE SENSOR AND THE SEAT TO FIX THIS OUT OF WARRANTY. INFINITI REFUSES TO DO A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE WHICH HAS BEEN FOUND TO BE VERY COMMON IN NISSAN AND INFINITI VEHICLES.
AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE USED, I BEEN EXPERIENCING ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE. THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON INDICATOR HAS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD AFTER TWO WEEKS OF THE PURCHASE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO VALVOLINE FOR THE OIL CHANGE SERVICE, AND THE LIGHT WAS STILL ILLUMINATED. NOTIFIED MY PERSONAL MECHANIC OF THE ISSUE AS WELL AS THE DEALER. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AUTOZONE AND USED THEIR FREE DIAGNOSTIC READER, WHICH STATED THE O2 SENSOR FOR BANK 2 SENSOR 1 AS THE ISSUE. PURCHASED THE PART FROM THE DEALER, TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC FOR SERVICE. AFTER I PAID FOR THE SERVICE, THE SAME DAY THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT ILLUMINATED AGAIN. THE NEXT DAY I TOOK IT BACK TO AUTOZONE AND THE DIAGNOSTIC READ BANK 1 SENSOR 1. TOOK IT TO MULTIPLE MECHANICS TO ONLY HAVE THE RUN AROUND OF PAYING THEM TO LOOK AT BUT NOT FIX THE ISSUE. CALLED THE DEALER I PURCHASED IT FROM, AND THEY WAS SUPPOSED TO SET AN APPOINTMENT WITH THEIR MECHANIC AND DID NOT. I HAD TO RESCHEDULE THE APPOINTMENT ON MY OWN. NEVER TOOK IT BECAUSE I WENT BACK TO MY MECHANIC AND HE SUPPOSEDLY FIXED THE SENSOR. AGAIN, THE SAME DAY OF SERVICE THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT ILLUMINATED AGAIN, THE CAR STALLED VERY BADLY, AND SHUT OFF ON ME. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE, AND DRIVE IT HOME. NOT ONLY AM I MAKING MONTHLY PAYMENTS ON THE VEHICLE, I'M PAYING FOR A VEHICLE THAT IS A HAZARD ON THE ROAD. I AM PUTTING MONEY I DON'T HAVE INTO A LEMON, ONLY HAVING THE VEHICLE FOR TWO MONTHS WITH A ELECTRICAL AND ENGINE ISSUE THAT I CAN NOT RESOLVE ON MY OWN.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 INFINITI G37. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO OPERATE EVEN AFTER THE IGNITION KEY WAS REMOVED. ALL THE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALER WHERE THE FUSE WAS REMOVED TO STOP THE ENGINE. IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE MALFUNCTIONED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. MY 2009 INFINITI G37X LOST POWER WITHOUT WARNING ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE FIRST TWO TIMES THE PROBLEM OCCURRED IN JAN 2013 (CAR WAS STILL UNDER 60K MILES WARRANTY). I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY ON A COLD NIGHT AND MY CAR STALLED AT AROUND 55/65 MPH MARK. THE CAR WAS SHAKING WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE. WHEN I PULLED OVER TO THE EMERGENCY LANE, MY CAR HAD LOST COMPLETE POWER. THEN, I RESTARTED THE CAR AND THE ENGINE ACTED AND SOUNDED NORMAL. I WARMED UP THE CAR FOR 5 MINUTES BEFORE I DROVE HOME. I WENT TO INFINITI TO GET THE PROBLEM FIXED AND I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO INFINITI OF NORTH AMERICA. INFINITI COULD NOT IDENTIFY OR RE-CREATE THE PROBLEM. ON DEC 7, 2013, I NOTICED MY CAR ACTED LIKE IT WAS LOSING POWER WHEN I ACCELERATED THE CAR TO 65 MPH WHILE I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY ON A COLD RAINY NIGHT. I TRIED TO ACCELERATE AND THE CAR FELT VERY CHOPPY AND SHAKY AS IF IT WAS CHOKING ON SOMETHING. SINCE THIS PROBLEM HAD OCCURRED TWO TIMES BEFORE, I DECIDED NOT TO CONTINUE TO INCREASE ACCELERATION TO THE CAR ANY FURTHER. I PULLED OVER TO THE EMERGENCY LANE, PARKED THE CAR, AND I VIDEO RECORDED THE PROBLEM. THERE WAS NO LIGHTING INDICATION OF ANY PROBLEM ON DASHBOARD. WHILE THE CAR WAS PARKED AND THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING, I TRIED TO REV UP THE ENGINE. THE CAR WAS SHAKING INTENSIVELY WHEN IT WAS REV UP TO 2,000 RPM. I ALSO RESTART THE CAR AND I TRIED TO REV UP THE ENGINE AGAIN AND THE CAR DID NOT SHAKE. AFTER RESTARTING, THE CAR ENGINE ACTED AND SOUNDED NORMAL. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR HOME SAFELY. THERE IS A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL. I'VE REPORTED THIS PROBLEM TO INFINITI, BUT THEY DENIED THERE IS ANY PROBLEM. INFINITI NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THIS MODEL. I HAVE 38 PAGES OF SERVICE REGARDING A STARTING PROBLEM. WHEN THE CAR IS STARTED WITH THE AC ON, IT CRANKS BUT WILL NOT START. THERE HAVE BEEN 6 BATTERY REPLACEMENTS, ONE 6 MONTHS AFTER THE CAR WAS PURCHASED AND 5 IN THE LAST 5 YEARS. WITHIN THE LAST WEEK AND A HALF IT HAS NEEDED 4000 IN REPAIRS. A VALVE ASSEMBLY, CONTROL AND NOW AN ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. THE CAR WAS BROUGHT IN DOZENS OF TIMES AND THE PROBLEM NEVER FIXED. WOULD BE HAPPY TO PROVIDE ALL OF THE PAPERWORK.
1. I WAS DRIVING MY 2009 INFINITI G37XS ON I-95 NEAR PHILADELPHIA. I WAS USING CRUISE CONTROL WITH SPEED SET AT NEAR 65MPH. I WAS LISTENING TO PANDORA INTERNET RADIO ON MY HTC EVO 4G ANDROID PHONE USING WIMAX (4G WIRELESS). THE HTC EVO WAS BEING CHARGED USING A CELLET PMOTQ9C CAR CHARGER FOR CELL PHONES. 2. OUT OF BLUE, ALL ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC SYSTEM WENT BLACK. ALL DASHBOARD DISPLAY(LCD), ENTERTAINMEN/NAVIGATION SYSTEM AND AC AND LEFT/RIGHT TURN SIGNAL AND LIGHTING ALL WENT OUT. NOTHING ELECTRONIC WORKS INCLUDING TURN SIGNAL/EMERGENCY LIGHT. I WAS QUITE NERVOUS, BUT DIDN'T WANT TO STOP AT MIDDLE OF INTERSTATE FREEWAY AND DRIVE STRAIGHT HOME AND PRAYED THAT POWER TRAIN STAY WORKING TILL I GOT HOME. THANK GOD, IT DID. AS SOON AS I STOPPED THE CAR BY PRESSING THE START/STOP BUTTON AFTER I DROVE INTO MY GARAGE, I WAITED A MINUTE OR TWO AND TRIED TO START MY CAR BY PRESSING THE START/STOP BUTTON WHILE PRESSING THE BREAK PEDAL. THE CAR WOULD NOT START. I THOUGHT THAT MY WIRELESS CARD KEY HAD BAD BATTERY. SO I SPENT 15MIN OR SO TO FIND MY 2ND WIRELESS CARD KEY AND STRANGELY ENOUGH I WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR. HOWEVER, THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT ON DASHBOARD WENT ON. I CALLED THE DEALER SERVICE AND WANTED TO BRING THE CAR. BUT DEALER DIDN'T HAVE ANY LOAN CAR AVAILABLE TILL NEXT TUESDAY. SO I WAITED AND DROVE CAREFULLY WITH MY CAR AND BROUGHT IT TO DEALER ON THE FOLLOWING TUESDAY. AGAIN STRANGELY, JUST ONE DAY EARLIER, THE "SERVICE ENGINE" LIGHT DISAPPEARED. I TRUSTED DEALER HAD RIGHT EQUIPMENT TO DIAGNOSE. 3. DEALER TOOK A FEW DAYS LOOKED AT IT AND COULD ONLY TOLD ME SOME LIMITED DIAGNOSTIC INFO ABOUT LOSS OF COMM AND COULD NOT PIN POINT THE ROOT CAUSE OF PROBLEM. 2009 INFINITI G37 HAS ELECTRICAL WIRING INSULATION MADE OF SOY-BASED POLYMER. SOY BASED POLYMER IS APPARENTLY BIODEGRADABLE. THE PROBLEM IS THAT IT IS ALSO ATTRACTIVE TO RODENTS, WHO EAT THE WIRING, CREATING ELECTRICAL SAFETY HAZARDS. IN ADDITION TO THE SAFETY HAZARDS, IT ALSO CREATES AN ECONOMIC STRESSOR ON CONSUMERS AND INSURERS WHO HAVE TO PAY FOR REPAIRS DONE TO THESE AUTOMOBILES, WHICH INFINITI CLAIMS IS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY EXISTING WARRANTY. *TR
