ENGINE CHECK LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY, IF HITTING A BUMP ENGINE CHECK LIGHT COMES ON. DEALER SAYS THAT GAS CAP KEEPS GOING TO GAS TANK. THEY HAVE TRIED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM APPROXIMATELY 3 TIMES. *AK *SLC
RIGHT REAR DOOR LOCK/ LATCH HAD CAUGHT ON FIRE WHILE DRIVING. VEHICLE AT DEALER FOR INSPECTION. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE ANY FURTHER DETAILS ON THIS MATTER. *AK
VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE AS SOON AS CONUMER HAD RETURNED HOME, DEALER HAD CHANGED THE WIRES AND WIRING BECAUSE THEY HAD BURNED PREVIOUSLY, CONSUMER HAD BEEN SMELLING SOMETHING BURNING PRIOR TO FIRE IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT, CLAIM 11-3602-682. *SLC
WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE BECAUSE OF WIRES, INSURED STATED THAT THE DEALER HAD CHANGED THE WIRES BECAUSE THEY HAD BURNED PREVIOUSLY. CLAIM NUMBER 11-3602-682. *YH
FRONT END WAS PULSATING WHEN APPLYING BRAKES, STOPPING DISTANCE WAS NORMAL. FRONT ROTORS WERE WARPED, AND PADS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. CONSUMER HAD ROTORS RECUT,THEN INSTALLED THEM AGAIN. CONSUMER FELT THAT RECALL IN 1999, AND EARLIER MODELS FOR ROTORS SHOULD INCLUDE 2000 MODEL.*AK
CONSUMER'S FOOT WAS ON BRAKE AND UPON TAKING FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD. VEHICLE CAN EASILY HIT SOMEONE OR SOMEONE'S VEHICLE. *AK THE SECOND TIME THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD, THERE WAS A CRASH, ONE PERSON WAS INJURED AND THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. *JB
AT 7,000 MILES, THE VEHICLE WOULD SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD PULSATE EXCESSIVELY WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OF 40+ MPH, ESPECIALLY DOWNHILL. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY WERE ABLE TO REPLICATE CONDITION. DEALERSHIP EXPLAINED THAT SHAKING AND PULSATIONS WERE DUE TO DEFECTIVE ROTORS WHICH HAD WARPED FROM EXCESSIVE HEAT - NOT DUE TO EMERGENCY BRAKING, BUT JUST NORMAL USE. DEALERSHIP REPLACED ROTORS AND PADS WITHOUT COST TO CUSTOMER. UNFORTUNATELY, THE SAME PROBLEM AROSE SOON AFTER MY FIRST ANNIVERSAY WITH THE VEHICLE AT ABOUT 17,500 MILES. TOOK TO SAME DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE SAME PROBLEM (ROTOR WARPING DUE TO OVERHEATING - NOT FROM ABUSIVE BRAKING, BUT FROM NORMAL BRAKING BY CUSTOMER). THEY REPAIRED THE PROBLEM BY RESURFACING FRONT ROTORS AND REPLACING FRONT PADS WITHOUT COST TO THE CUSTOMER (EXCELLENT SERVICE DEPARTMENT). MY CONCERN IS THAT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT REP STATED THAT THE SAME PROBLEM WOULD COME UP AGAIN AFTER ABOUT 8-10,000 MILES BECAUSE THE ROTORS AND BRAKING SYSTEM ARE DEFECTIVE FROM THE MANUFACTURER. HE STATED THAT JEEP AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAVE TO "BUMP HEADS" BEFORE THIS PROBLEM IS PERMANENTLY CORRECTED. PLEASE MAKE JEEP ACKNOWLEDGE AND CORRECT THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED. JEEP NEEDS TO STAND BEHIND ITS PRODUCT IF IT WISHES TO MAINTAIN ITS RATHER GOOD REPUTATION. IF NOT, JEEP WILL LOSE ITS CUSTOMER BASE AND WILL EVENTUALLY GO THE WAY OF THE DODO BIRD. THE OTHER PROBLEM I HAVE EXPERIENCED IS THE MALFUNCTIONING OF THE MY REAR TRUNK DOOR LOCK. IT GETS STUCK QUITE OFTEN, SUCH THAT I CANNOT DISENGAGE THE LOCK TO OPEN THE TRUNK. I MUST LOCK AND REOPEN THE VEHICLE'S LOCKS (WITH THE REMOTE CONTROL) TO GET THE REAR HOOD LOCK TO WORK PROPERLY. OTHERWISE, MY 2000 JEEP CHEROKEE IS QUITE SATISFACTORY. HOWEVER, I WORRY ABOUT MY OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES ONCE MY WARRANTY EXPIRES. CAN YOU INVESTIGATE THESE PROBLEMS AND TRY TO GET JEEP TO COMMIT TO A RECALL?*AK
VEHICLE WAS PARKED WHEN ENGINE COMPARTMENT CAUGHT ON FIRE, APPEARS TO BE CAUSED BY A FUEL LEAK, CLAIM 52-2453-799. *SLC
INSURED PARKED VEHICLE AND WENT INTO SCHOOL, ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER HE WAS INFORMED HIS VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE, THE FIRE STARTED FROM A FUEL LEAK IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. CLAIM NUMBER 52-2453-799. *YH
FRONT BRAKE ROTORS WOULD VIBRATE AND SHIMMY WHEN APPLIED. PROBLEM WAS GETTING WORSE. ROTORS WERE WARPED. WOULD NEED TO HOLD TIGHT TO STEERING WHEEL FOR CONTROL OF VEHICLE.*AK
BRAKES BEGAN PULSATING AND SHAKING ON 12/2000, 22422 MILES. REPAIRED 1/04/2001. REPEATED PREVIOUS PROBLEM ON 4/05/01, 27028 MILES. REPAIRED. NOW 1/17/2002 AND BRAKES ARE AGAIN IN NEED OF REPAIR. I FEEL THIS COULD BE DANGEROUS AND AT THE VERY LEAST THEIR IS A DEFECT IN THESE BRAKES. THANK YOU. *AK
THIS IS A RIGHT HAND DRIVE JEEP CHEROKEE. THE SPARE TIRE IS MOUNTED ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE CAUSING A VISIBILITY PROBLEM THAT IS A SEVERE SAFETY HAZARD WHEN PULLING ONTO THE ROAD. THE SPARE TIRE WAS MOUNTED ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE IN THE 1995-1998 RIGHT HAND DRIVE CHEROKEE MODELS, BUT THEN FOR SOME REASON WAS MOUNTED ON THE LEFT IN THE 1999 AND 2000 MODELS. DEALER REFUSED TO REMOUNT THE TIRE ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE, SAYING THERE WAS NO WAY TO DO THIS.*AK
WHILE TRAVELING45-50 MPH HIT SLUSH ON SHOULDER, SLID INTO AN ICE EMBANKMENT, PROCEEDED INTO A DITCH, AND CAME TO REST AFTER HITTING A STONE WALL. UPON IMPACT, NEITHER AIR BAG DEPLOYED. DRIVER WAS ONLY ONE IN VEHICLE AND WAS WEARING SEAT BELT. *AK
VEHICLE EXPERIENCED AN INTERNAL FIRE, CONSUMER STATED THAT THE TOP WIRES WERE MELTED, CLAIM 15-DEC-2000. *SLC
VEHICLE FIRE ORIGINATED UNDERHOOD, VEHICLE TAKEN TO DEALER AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT PROBLEM WAS DUE TO HEADLIGHT SELECTED SWITCH. VEHICLE WAS PRONOUNCED AS TOTALLED BY DEALER/MANUFACTURER. *AK
WIRES WERE MELTED, INSURED STATED THAT THIS WAS AN INTERNAL FIRE AND FEELS INCIDENT COULD BE A POSSIBLE DEFECT. CLAIM NUMBER 30-V293-535. *YH
ROTORS WARPED EXCESSIVELY EVERY 17,000 MILES. ALSO, EXTENDED STOPPING STOPPING DISTANCE. CONSUMER SMELLED BRAKE FLUID WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED ,AND THE FRONT END SHOOK. PROBLEM HAS EXISTED SINCE DECEMBER 2000, AND PROGRESSING. DEALER WAS NOTIFIED. PLEASE PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION. *AK
AFTER 4 ATTEMTS TO REMEDY THIS PROBLEM CHRYSLER HAS ONLY "THANKED" ME FOR "SHARING MY CONCERNS". IN THE MEANTIME I AM DRIVING A VEHICLE THAT REQUIRES NEW BRAKES EVER 3000 MILES. CONSUMER STATES WHILE TRYING TO STOP THE BRAKES SEEM TO HESISTATE, LIKE GOING OVER GRAVEL BUT THEY'LL STOP. TOOK TO A MECH AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE ROTORS.
WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 65 MPH RIGHT REAR TIRE HAD A BLOWOUT AND A TREAD SEPARATION. GOODYEAR TIRE, NO DOT NUMBER OR TIRE SIZE. *AK
WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 55 MPH STEERING WHEEL WILL START VIBRATING. COULD FEEL IT ON PASSENGER SIDE, AND IN FRONT OF VEHICLE. *AK
CONCERNED THAT FAILURE OCCURRED ON A VEHICLE THAT IS FAIRLY LIGHT DUTY. NO SAFETY DEFECT LISTED IN SUMMARY. *AK
FRONT BRAKE ROTORS HAVE BEEN REPLACED ,AND REAR SECONDARY BRAKE PADS AND SHOES WERE CRACKED DOWN THE MIDDLE. *AK
CONSUMER COMPLAINS THAT ROTOR, WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED, WILL FORCE VEHICLE TO JUMP INTO ANOTHER LANE OF TRAFFIC. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/ATTACHMENTS.*AK
WHILE DRIVING 30-40 MPH HAD A FRONTAL IMPACT IN WHICH THIS VEHICLE T-BONED ANOTHER VEHICLE, AND DRIVER'S/ PASSENGER'S AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, WHICH DID NOT PROTECT THE OCCUPANTS. JEEP DEALER WAS NOT WILLING TO HELP. *AK
WHEN CONSUMER WILL TURN VEHICLE ON THERE WAS HESITATION. ALSO, VEHICLE WAS HARD TO PUT IN GEAR. SHE CONTACTED JEEP, AND VEHICLE NEEDED TRANSMISSION. DEALERSHIP WILL REPLACED TRANSMISSION ON THE WARRANTY. *AK
HEAVY DUTY FRONT ROTORS...NON COMPONENT STYLE....BUILT TO RUN MAIL ROUTES..RIGHT HAND DRIVE. FRONT BRAKES CONTINUALLY OVERHEATING CAUSING ROTORS TO HAVE TO BE TURNED EVERY 3 TO 6 THOUSAND MILES. FRONT BRAKES GETTING SO HOT...ROTORS TURNING BLUE. NOW WITH A BRAND NEW SET OF ROTORS AND NEW PAD ON FRONT..NEW SHOES AND TURNED ROTORS ON BACK...AFTER ONLY 30 MINUTES OF RUNNING..OVERHEATED..BLUED ROTORS AND BRAKES FADED..COMPLETELY AWAY. VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP. BACK BRAKE DO NOT APPEAR TO BE HOLDING AT ALL. ONLY ONE SET OF BACK PADS NEEDED IN 26,OOO MILES WHILE 4 SETS OF FRONT PADS WORN OUT OR BROKEN FROM OVERHEATING OF ROTORS. FIRST SET OF ROTORS REPLACED AFTER TURNING 2 TIMES..THEY WARPED CAUSING SHIMMY IN FRONT END ON BRAKING. THIS VEHICLE HAS NEVER HAD GOOD BRAKES. PEDAL HAS FELT MUSHY FROM DAY ONE AND VERY HARD PRESSURE MUST BE APPLIED TO PEDAL IN ORDER TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. DEALERSHIP HAS ALREADY REPLACE ONE MASTER CYLINDER AND I JUST HAD ANOTHER ONE INSTALLED. DON'T KNOW WHERE THE PROBLEM IS...BUT WHEN VEHICLE IS UP ON STANDS IN REAR..AND PLACED IN GEAR..BACK WHEELS CONTINUE TO ROLL WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED. SEEMS THAT THERE IS NOT NEARLY ENOUGH PRESSURE BEING SENT TO BACK BRAKES. VEHICLE SEEMS TO BE RELYING SOLELY ON FRONT BRAKES. ALL LINES HAVE BEEN CHECKED..AND WHEEL CYLINDERS AND CALIPERS ARE OKAY. DEALERSHIP SAYS...NO RECALLS OR PROBLEMS FROM OTHER CUSTOMERS. I CAN SEE FROM READING THIS FORUM...THAT IS NOT TRUE! PLEASE HELP! I DON'T WANT TO WRECK WHEN MY BRAKES FAIL AND POSSIBLY INJURE MYSELF, GRANDKIDS, OR SOMEONE ELSE. ESPECIALLY DON'T WANT TO WRECK ON THE MAIL ROUTE. THE POST OFFICE MIGHT JUST FROWN ON THAT...ESPECIALLY SINCE JEEP IS VERY MUCH AWARE THAT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM BUT STILL INSIST THAT THERE IS NONE! HELP!!!!*AK
THERE WAS A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM FRONT OF VEHICLE DURING NORMAL OPERATION AND WAS DIFFICULT TO CONTROL/ PREVENT VEHICLE FROM WANDERING. DEALERSHIP REPLACED FRONT SIDE, AND PINION BEARINGS TWICE. ALSO, REPLACED STEERING DAMPNER. PROBLEM IS OCCURRING AGAIN, AND DEALERSHIP IS NOT PROVIDING ANY ASSISTANCE TO CONSUMER. I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR 07/21/00 & THE CAR WAS SMOKING FROM THE BACK NO LIGHTS CAME ON TO INFORM ME THAT THE CAR WAS SMOKING - PEOPLE FLAGGED ME DOWN TO LET ME KNOW THE CAR WAS SMOKING. *AK
AT 50-55 MPH VEHICLE SHIMMIES, WENT TO ARBITRATION, TIRES WERE EXCHANGED, NO CHANGE.*AK THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER COULD NOT FIND THE CAUSE FOR SHIMMING AND THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE SAFE TO DRIVE. *YH
ALL TREAD WORN OFF RIGHT FRONT TIRE AFTER 5500 MILES AND TIRE GOES FLAT. JEEP DEALER AND GOODYEAR TIRE DEALER SAY ALIGNMENT OK. GOODYEAR SAYS POSSIBLE WHEEL BEARING FAILURE CAUSING TIRE TO DRAG. JEEP WILL NOT INSPECT BEARING. AFTER 2 HRS DRIVING AT 25MPH CANNOT STEER CAR, BRAKING CAUSES STEARING WHEEL TO VIBRATE, TOUCHING LUG NUTS WILL BURN FINGER, HUB AND BRAKE ROTOR HOT. *AK( DOT NUMBER: )

IN SUMMER OF 2000 DRIVESHAFT AT REAR UNIVERSAL JOINT SNAPPED IN-TWO. AGAIN, IN SPRING OF THIS YEAR SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. BOTH EVENTS REPLACED AT DEALER' S FACILITY. INITIAL FAILURE WAS A WARRANTEED EVENT SECOND WAS AT MY COST. TODAY (6/11/01) THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL 'PINION' WAS FOUND TO BE FAULTY. I TRULY THINK THERE IS A METALLURGICAL PROBLEM HER. DEALER PERSONNEL ARE UNABLE TO PROVIDE CAUSAL INFORMATION. SO FAR NO INJURIES OR ACCIDENTS RESULTING FROM THESE PROBLEMS BUT CLEARLY THIS IS INDICATIVE OF METALLURGICAL FAILURES. *AK

PRIOR TO RECALL NOTICE (02V104000) CONSUMERS VEHICLE EXPERIENCED AN UNDER HOOD FIRE IN WHICH A MOUSE NEST HAD IGNITED, CONSUMER IS REQUESTING REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE RAPIRS AND A FIFTY DOLLAR DEDUCTIBLE THAT WAS PAID TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY.*JB

VEHICLE WAS PARKED INSIDE GARAGE AREA AT WORK. SOMEONE CAME INTO THE OFFICE AND STATED THAT A VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE. FLAMES WERE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE GRILL AREA. FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS NOTIFIED. THE FIREMEN HAD TO OPEN THE HOOD AREA WITH AN AX. HEAT FROM THE FIRE CLOSED THE HOOD TIGHTLY. CHRYSLER DETERMINED FIRE STARTED IN POWER STEERING MOTOR. *AK *ML
