My "service 4wd" light continues to come on and the shop said my PTU needs replaced but my VIN number isn't part of the recalls so it's going to cost me several thousand dollars.
My 4X4 service light came on and I was advised by the Dealership that my Power Train Unit needs to be replaced.
I was driving mid day today and I noticed my display on the dash had gone dim as if the headlights had turned on and the dash lights dimmed expecting it to be dark inside. I then got a ding about the auto shutoff when stopped feature not working (this has been dinging for a few years and hasn’t worked since shortly after I got the vehicle in 2018, however it’s been working the last few weeks). I was pulling into a grocery store looking for a spot when all of a sudden the car died. I lost brakes and power steering but luckily was going slow. I turned off the key, put it in park, and it turned right back on. I pulled into a spot and then noticed the engine light on. I’ve read countless forums about this exact issue. Other owners have experienced this since their Jeep was brand new. I’ve had this for 5 years without issues until lately. Prior to the is event, my car was experiencing the same issue with the display dimming. A week prior to the stall today, I was driving around 70 mph when the dash dimmed and I think went completely dark for a bit. I got a ding about the auto shutoff and another stating that 4wd was not available. I tried to turn my headlights on and off but there was nothing. I didn’t have any blinkers either. I pulled over, turned it off and back on and all was fine the rest of the hour-long drive home. I am extremely concerned about it stalling, especially if I’m turning in front of traffic at an intersection. This is not uncommon and other owners are concerned for their safety as well.
My electronic parking brake malfunctioned AGAIN. The vehicle was parked and turned off without activating the parking brake. When I returned to the vehicle and restarted it the parking brake was engaged and would not turn off. In addition, the red ‘brake’ light, and yellow electronic park brake warning light on the dashboard appeared; the odometer was flashing. After several attempts putting the vehicle in D and then R, in effect “rocking it”, the parking brake did disengage. All of the lights remained on. Each time the car was placed back into ‘park’ the parking brake would re-engage, and I needed to go back through the same process to disengage the parking brake.” About the third time, the Parking Brake permanently engaged and could not be disengaged by any means. The car is at the dealer to have the Brake Module replaced for the 3rd time, ALL due to water intrusion. Water is getting in the electrical systems. There’s a recall for a minor water intrusion issue on the lift gate! This is the SAME issue. Please issue a recall before someone is seriously injured or killed. This brake could engage at any moment and easily cause a collision.
Transmission failed in vehicle with only 96K miles. When attempting to accelerate, car would not switch gears properly and this hinder the ability to gain speed. We had an original diagnosis that the input output sensor needed to be replaced, and after weeks and several thousand dollars, we were told that the part still failed and a whole new transmission needed to be put in.
PTU motor failure.
PTU failure, dealer cannot effectively perform recall 45A without a whole PTU replacement, at a cost of upwards of $4000. This is a known issue with the PTUs in these Jeeps, with numerous service bulletins and recalls regarding the part. Failure of the 4x4 system has put my, and others’ safety at risk because unreliability in inclement snowy weather conditions and forcing the vehicle into 2wd mode unexpectedly could cause loss of traction or control. The problem is well known, simply search “Jeep Cherokee PTU failure” and hundreds if not thousands of other owners have experienced the same issue. The component has been inspected by a Jeep dealership/service center and confirmed to be faulty. At highway speeds, seemingly randomly, the warning message “4WD System Temporarily Unavailable” would sometimes come on briefly, then go away. After failure of the part, “4WD System Unavailable, Service Required” would come on persistently and 4WD was not functional at all.
The contact owns a vehicle 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V338000 (Electrical System, Structure) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Approx. 4 weeks ago (6/14/23), the service 4WD service light started to come on/off at random times in my 2016 Jeep Cherokee (upon starting car, putting car in reverse, making a turn and just during driving). On 6/22/23, I took my vehicle to an independent auto shop to see if they could pull a code as to the issue of the service 4W drive light and they could not pull a code to find out what the issue was. I then scheduled an appointment with a Chrysler/Jeep dealership on 7/6/23 to have them investigate the service 4WD light. I was advised that the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) needs to be replaced as metal was found inside. A new PTU has been ordered as of 7/11/23 but was advised that this part is on backorder with no ETA. Upon research, Jeep issued a recall in 2020 for 2016 and 2017 Jeep Cherokees over PTU's affecting 93K vehicles. I believe the internal recall # was 45A and the previous recall # was W47. My 2016 Jeep Cherokee (64K miles) was not a part of said recall. I believe Jeep has a larger problem with the PTU's being used in their vehicles but does not want to admit it. Upon reading the NHTSA Part 573 Safety Recall report - 23V-302 regarding the recall of the PTU's, the safety risk is a loss of motive power which can cause a vehicle to crash without prior warning. My Jeep may not have had the component parts numbers listed in said report but did the recall for the PTU's go deep enough than the part numbers listed? Has Jeep really corrected the issue with their PTU's? At this time, I do not know if I have a safe vehicle to drive. I do not know if I am putting myself and other's at risk for an unknown time period. I am concerned about the safety of driving my vehicle based on the Safety recall report.
Keep makes a loud grinding noise when I turn right or left. Sounds like it’s coming from the back & underneath. Took it to a mechanic & he checked every thing. It’s not the brakes. He couldn’t figure out the problem. I’m scared to drive it. Don’t want to have the bottom fall out; which is what it sounds like is going to happen. There are recalls that sound like what the problem is but of course they aren’t for my car.
My 2016 Jeep Cheroke with 75,000 miles started to show a yellow 4WD service light. It would come on and off. I brought it to a Jeep service repair center, where it currently sits, and they confirmed the PTU is NO good. Needs to be replaced at a cost of over $3,000. And to make matters worse, I was advised not to drive the Jeep because it is a safety issue! Also, there is a recall out for "certain" Jeep Cherokees, not mine, with the same exact issue! My Jeep Cherokee was manufactured during the time of the recalled Cherokees but it isn't part of this recall at this point?! I do not have $3,000 to repair a failed PTU which is part of a recall but not my jeep "yet," but if I am driving the Jeep and the PTU totally fails, the Jeep will lose power to the wheels and it can cause an accident. Jeep knows this PTU is an issue but won't help. This is a safety issue.
While driving on the freeway transmission went out without any warning or signs. Was going 65 mph in the fast lane and engine rpm went up but speed dropped to 35 mph almost getting rear ended and barely made it to the emergency lane.
I have been trying to get into my dealer for months concerning this recall they continue ton give me the run around and have been no help
For months now I keep having something wrong not sure whats wrong either it’s engine, powertrain. It keeps doing different stuff. First it’s acting like it want to dye like stall out for no reason. Sometimes it loses power like hitting the gas peddle but won’t go engine just fires up. The other day I had issues trying to put into reverse to back up hit the gas and it just accelerated really bad but didn’t move almost like it was stuck in gear. I’ll be driving down road and out of nowhere my car accelerated gears to 3/4 wouldn’t go down when i was going 40 on straight road. Took few minutes to unstick. Whatever is going on seriously needs looked into bc i am worried it’s gonna cause me get hit. This been going on for couple years and i am about ready to trade my Jeep in for different dealer
Check 4 wheel drive indicator light came on. Brought to dealership and they confirmed something is wrong with PTU MOTOR. Code C14A7-97. I see there has been recalls for this as it’s a safety issue(campaigned number 23V302000. Vehicle may lose power) but I don’t see any recall information when I input my vin number. If this is an issue with other vehicles why isn’t my vehicle coming up in the recall notice? Please let me know if this can be part of the recall.
I just bought my vehicle and I looked it’s been driving funny I took it to the shop they said I need my ptu fixed when I looked it up there is a recall but I don’t understand why my car not involved in the recall when it’s majority jeeps problem right now
The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the “Service 4-WD” warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the power transfer unit and informed the contact that the unit needed to be replaced. After investigating the cause of the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
I had the Emergency Brake Module replaced in Nov 2020 at a cost of over $900, plus a rental car for 2 weeks. Yesterday, 05/28/23, my emergency brake started setting itself AGAIN, plus the dash shows same error codes as before. Being a holiday weekend, I took it to the only place that was open. They cannot fix it. It requires the dealer. It’s the same issue as before. The emergency parking brake sets every time the vehicle goes into park. I’ve been able to get it unstuck 2x, so I didn’t have to have the vehicle towed YET, but I’m not sure I will be able to get the brake unstuck again. It’s very scary driving it because the emergency can engage randomly at any speed. This is an issue the NHTSA must investigate further. Clearly with a second failure of the same system, there is a serious safety issue. Warranty doesn’t cover it because it’s out of warranty. Extended warranty doesn’t cover it because it’s “water intrusion”. Chrysler/Jeep has known about this issue. It’s a manufacturer defect and a serious safety issue. Chrysler/Jeep needs to be held accountable before someone is seriously injured or killed.
The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at approximately 50 MPH, the steering column was moved, and the 4-WD warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the light remained illuminated until the wheel was straightened. Additionally, the contact stated that when the steering wheel was turned, a grinding sound was coming from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the powertrain control unit (PCU) had an internal malfunction and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 73,000.
We were told at dealership that the vehicle needs a new PTU, however, we are not under recall as of now. This looks like a widespread issue with 2014-2016 jeeps and they need to be replaced.
The contact's daughter owns 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that the Service 4WD warning light was intermittently flashing on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken a dealer to be diagnosed. The mechanic discovered a failure with the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). The vehicle was not repaired. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train) which he linked to the failure. The manufacturer had not been notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 90,400.
The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V302000 (Power Train) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
Recently my emergency brake locked up while driving and lost control and bumped my head pretty hard the car would not release it brought it to jeep dealer they said it’s corrosion due to water intrusion in the electronic emergency brake module after doing a little research on finding that a lot of people are having the same problems and have reported them to you. I also called jeep and had a customer service representative. That was very rude and did not care about the accident. I’ve just been in Is there anything you can do as my car is stuck in the shop at the moment, don’t want to put a new part in if it’s going to happen again because it’s a manufacture defect, and I also don’t want the brakes to lock up while me or my wife is driving. This is very dangerous and needs immediate attention now
The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while her son was driving at an unknown speed, there was smoke coming from the liftgate. Fellow motorists alerted her son of the failure as he pulled over and allowed the liftgate to cool down. The contact stated that her son was able to drive the vehicle home without further incidence; however, the liftgate failed to open. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure; however, the vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V338000 (Electrical System, Structure). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 78,000.
Engine and drive bad engine but just bought less 7 month ago
Tire and brake , bear , park brake etc less 6 month issue
Ever since I bought this vehicle new in 2016 every once in a while it was like the transmission was skipping a gear. Today I was stopped at a red light and then excelerated(not heavily) to go.. and it seemed to keep slipping and would not pick up speed.. i had vehicles behind me so slowly moved over to the shoulder, put vehicle out of gear and then back into gear.. hesitated a bit and then went fine.. This was the scariest incident for me. only has 95000 kms. Checked ViN.. lots of power train issues.. but like the others.. my VIN has not been recalled.. I think this issue needs to be looked into .. with so many of the same complaints.
Blower module, a/c module and yes it’s available anytime. For starters my a/c doesn’t work completely and I have a newborn that cannot be in this vehicle due to that issue. Also with my first encounter with the issue, my car turned off and all the lights came on then turned off and warned that autostart/stop didn’t work, and my emergency brakes didn’t work along with my traction control. The a/c error has be confirmed by a dealer for me, but they said it was rare for a bunch of electronics to go out with it. The vehicle has not been looked yet by a manufacturer dealer due to money being tight. The car stopped working for about 5 minutes with my brother inside the vehicle. The lights flashed on then threw out all those warnings I had mentioned up top.
The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V338000 (Electrical System, Structure) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
PTU. Car jumps while in park
The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while her daughter was driving approximately 35 MPH, the transmission was slipping. The contact's daughter pulled over and turned off the vehicle and was able to restart the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an unknown local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the power transfer unit (PTU) needed to be replaced; however, the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
4WD Service light came on for 2 mins then would turn on off after driving for 3 weeks. Then light came on and would not turn off. Car was taken to independent auto shop and was diagnosed as a bad PTU (power transfer unit). Currently waiting for service at jeep dealership. Service wait is over 3 weeks. Car is stuck in 2wd and has no traction control even if it is stated as being engaged. Front wheels spin on slightest touch from a stop and on turns at speeds over 35 mph.
PTU failed at 81000 miles and needs to be replaced. This repair is estimated to cost me $3400 and happened after just completing regular maintenance on the vehicle. When the Service AWD light came on the vehicle swerved on its own into another lane and could have caused an accident.
I took my Jeep to get serviced on March 16, 2023 for a 'service shifter' light. This had already been replaced before and had a 2 year warranty so this was fixed however my issue now lies that last week around April 20, 2023, I got another light indicating "service 4wd". I took my car to the dealership today to be told the diagnosis was "internal PTO failure". I was quoted an insane amount to repair and was told that the part is not available as it is on BACK ORDER. After looking this information up online I see that Jeep had multiple recalls for this same issue for vehicles 2014-2017 however mine is not appearing on the recall. I called Jeep and was told there was nothing they can do and I'm extremely upset because the simple fact that the part is on back order let's me know that this is a common issue that others must be having as well yet Jeep has yet to take any action for their faulty equipment. This poses an immense danger for me because the repricautions are that if I drive my vehicle I am risking my life in that the car might come to a complete stop mid drive. Should I be in an accident I can only hope Jeep will take accountability for their ignorance and delayed responses. If Jeep is aware of PTU/PTO issues with their vehicles ALL jeeps within the 2014-2017 timeline should be eligible for this replacement under the recall and the part should be mass produced to ensure every customer gets from point A to point B safely. When driving my car home from the dealership I felt my car tug when making a sharp left turn and my car swiveled immediately thereafter. I also noticed that it is taking immense amount of effort for my car to accelerate when pressing the gas which terrifies me that it will simply come to a complete stop and jeopardize my life at any given moment. This needs to be addressed ASAP and a new recall needs to be issued to remediate this error.
When I came to a stop, and turned right or left, I could hear a low "growl" in the rear. This started around April, I went for my oil change and regular maintenance on June 2 and mentioned to my mechanic about the noise. The warning light "service 4WD" was coming on. A computer check was done. It was suggested it was most likely a differential issue with the 4WD. The repairs were not done at the time. I reviewed the cost of repair/replace and also found reports of other people with the same vehicle and issue. I saw the campaign #23V-302, 20V343000, and FCA recall 45A.
IN EARLY 2022 THE VEHICLE JUST SHUTOFF WHILE I WAS ACTIVELY DRIVING. I COULDNT GET THE CAR TO NEUTRAL ONCE IT SHUT OFF AND HAD TO BE TOWED. BOOSTING DID NOT IMMEDIATELY RESOLVE THE ISSUE. BUT A DAY LATER THE CAR WOULD START AND THEN DRIVE FOR A WHILE AND JUST RANDOMLY SHUTOFF. I HAD BATTERY CHANGED, INCIDENT OCCURED AGAIN AND I HAD TO BE TOWED A COUPLE OF THE TIMES AND JUST DECIDED TO READ UP ON LINE IF ANYONE WAS HAVING SIMILAR ISSUES AND I CAME ACCROSS THIS ARTICLE BUT WHEN I ENTERED MY VIN NUMBER IT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL EVEN THOUGH THE ISSUE I AM HAVING IS SIMILAR.
All of the warning lights on the dash light up at once. The car then suddenly goes into limp mode. The car has been to the dealer 4 times for this problem. The dealer thought is was a bad module, however the car is continuing to have problems after replacing it twice. I'm scared to drive the car. We already had a problem with the car with oil consumption where the car would turn off while driving, the dealer fixed that problem.
Power Train is failing; Service 4WD light blinks on and off affecting the driving of the vehicle. Dealer stated is a failing PTU; but my VIN is not in the recall from the 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokees Safety Recall W47 / NHTSA 20V-343. Dealer stated the part is on backorder and there is no expected timeframe for repair/replacement. Obviously, a larger problem for this specific vehicle Make/.Model It appears there is a need to extend this recall to all Jeeps; as the PTU's seem faulty for all Jeeps from 2014-2017. My Jeep is a 2016.
My Vehicle shuts down once a day, every morning after about a couple minutes of driving. The engine shuts off, the dash notifies me to "Shift vehicle into park then desired gear" but with my engine off, I have to restart my car as well. My car won't restart unless I try over and over and hold the key while turning the ignition. Occasionally I get a "Service Shifter" notification on my dash but no lights or notifications besides that. I've been to one Jeep dealership service department so far and they were not able to locate the cause.
The contact's son owns a 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. The contact stated that while his son was parking, the transmission was shifted into park (P), the contact's son lifted his foot off the brake when the vehicle sporadically accelerated, crashing into another parked vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. No injuries were sustained. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V302000 (Power Train). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 121,000.
For last yr i keep having car want stall did recall on it. Helped for bit, then it’s always wanting stick between 2/3 when trying change gears. On different recall it fixed for bit the temp on transmission bouncing back forth a lot in temps. I have recorded video to show it. Now my engine light is on for P0441 code with power train possible evap leak. It just keeps being one problem after another like it’s not wanting to get gas to it what seems like. It’s all happened over last year and engine light came on Sat
Ptu fail the second day of purchasing my car on my birthday with my 2 daughters was in the car with me a 1 year old and 2 year old the car made a big boom and stop it put it self in park. I took the car to a shop yes it was confirmed the ptu yes I took it to Jeep no they appeared after that happen
The contact owned a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that she had parked the vehicle in the driveway near the garage of her friend's residence, and 10 minutes later, she was informed that the vehicle had caught on fire. The contact stated that the vehicle caught on fire from the front seats onward. The contact stated that the fire expanded to the garage, causing the whole residence to catch on fire. The contact stated that the five adults and two children, who were occupying the residence immediately exited the residence. The contact was able to extinguish the fire with the assistance of the fire department. A fire department report was filed. The contact did not recall whether a police report was filed. There was no injury sustained. The vehicle was totaled. There was no further information provided. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The manufacturer later informed the contact that the case had been closed as they were unable to investigate the remains of the vehicle. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V338000 (Electrical System, Structure), however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
Warning system telling me of a problem. Problem with the transfer case. 4 wheel drive issue. Only about 65k miles

The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while the brake pedal was depressed at a stop, she then depressed the accelerator pedal; however, the vehicle delayed two to three seconds before responding. The vehicle then stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after several seconds. The contact stated that while making a left or right turn, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact stated that she had to wait several seconds to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact stated that the spark plugs were replaced, and a tune-up was performed but the failure recurred. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000.
Engine oil cooler failure, had to be replaced. Known issue per 3 techs. Leaks oil onto engine and exhaust. No warning, just the smoke and smell of burning oil. Occurred at 73,200 miles more or less.
Let's start with my vehicle was first in the shop back in February for a failed brake line. Some how it failed. Then my thermoset unit failed. Not sure why on that either. Then they noticed some other issues were fixed. I got my vehicle back. A few days later my vehicle was back in the shop because my transmission kept doing something causing me to keep getting kicked out of gear causing me to stop in the middle of the intersections which could have caused an accident. I lost my acceleration control and while driving I kept losing traction. Then supposedly fixed it. Then the same day I got it back I had to send it back to dealership due to the transmission kept getting kicked out of gear causing me to get stuck in the middle of an intersection. They finally towed it. Apparantly they need a part which is currently on back order for some unknown reason.
The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while making a turn, the vehicle experienced the death wobble. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic on two occasions to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the rear knuckles needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired twice; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was then taken back to the independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the rear knuckles and knuckle bushings needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000.
