NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2018 Jeep Cherokee. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The dealership diagnosed a failing PTU (power transfer unit) with metal shavings in the oil and a severe fluid leak onto the exhaust system, which presents a clear fire hazard. I’ve been told not to drive it due to the safety risk, but I rely on this vehicle to work and I have no alternative transportation. This issue is part of Recall #01C, but I was informed that Chrysler has no replacement parts available at this time. In addition to the fire risk, this issue is also causing noticeable power loss, drivetrain instability, and worsening mechanical symptoms. I am requesting immediate assistance — either a loaner vehicle or rental support — until the recall repair can be completed. Please escalate this to Chrysler Recall Support and respond promptly. I am not in a position to purchase or rent another vehicle for a defect that Chrysler is already aware of and has recalled.

After my husband started my Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk today he shifted into 'DRIVE' and pulled the vehicle out of our garage. While in 'DRIVE' and with his foot on the brake waiting for the garage door to close, he noticed that a 'Service Shifter' message had appeared in the center of the dash screen. A few seconds later we both noticed that all of the red lights were lit on the gear selector console. Typically, only the light next to the letter 'D' would be lit when the Jeep is in 'DRIVE'. This is the first time that this problem has occurred on our Jeep. As we made our way to the graduation party we were attending, I did some research re this message on my phone while my husband drove. A few miles later, we pulled off the road, shut the engine off, and 30 seconds later re-started the vehicle. This cleared the message and also all of the red lights on the shifter console. When he shifted into 'DRIVE' only the light next to the 'D' was lit. The problem did not show up again today but I wanted to file this report after reading online that this same problem has been occurring for many years on various JEEP models.

Driving down the Freeway when the car had a warning message please service 4wd so I pulled over but I was unable to put the car in park, all the lights next to the shifter were red and when I tried to shift to park it said please service shifter. With my foot on the brake I pushed the power button to turn the car off counted to 30 and when I turned the car on none of the red lights were lit up and all it said was please shift to park. I contacted the dealer and have an appointment Tuesday. I do know there is a current recall with the PTU that has not been remedied in a reasonable amount of time. I fear for mine and my childs safety.
Service shifter message and all gear indicator lights on PRND. Seeing common problem and a Technical Bulletin on 2014-2018 Jeep Cherokees
We received the warning light "Service 4WD" on May 21, 2025. Our mechanic scanned it on May 27, 2025 and got code C14A7-97 which is for the PTU. This problem has been recalled on certain 2017-2019 Jeep Cherokee's but our 2018 vehicle is not included in the recall, even though we are experiencing the exact same issue as the recalled vehicles. According to reports this issue can cause a loss of power and cause the vehicle to crash without warning. The NHTSA recall number is 25V011000.

Have had intermittent lights for 4wd problem, has an open recall for it that I got notice along time ago but still no fix
While driving, my "service 4WD" light came on, on my dashboard. I took the car to the Jeep dealership where it was purchased and always serviced. They ran a diagnostic check, and it showed I need a new PTU unit. This was on May 13th, 2025. I was told I could drive it home, but not to drive it and they would notify me when the part arrived at the dealership. I would be scheduled for the necessary repairs. The car had a total of 33,740 at that time at the dealership. It is now August 4, 2025, and they still have not received the proper part or PTU unit. They have instructed me that now, after almost 3 months, I can still drive my car, though they said I could not drive it at all except to drive it home on May 13, 2025. Never mind the fact that it could cause further damage and cause me to have an accident if it completely goes out while driving it. It has been a real inconvenience, not to mention the risk involved of having a real accident. I have never received any kind of manufacture's recall concerning this vehicle.

Service 4wd came on. Has been on. Jeep dealership said the switch was bad, replaced and still on. Since then it has turned off while driving 6 times. Now all the time in traffic and when I try to park it will say service shifter. I contacted stellantis directly about this and the supposed recall they announced, but has no fix. They said it isn't their problem it is on the dealer. Not acceptable to make a car that I have to force myself daily not to be in an accident with. Most recent was today. Car died and stuttered to a stop in someone's yard. Power assist stearing goes away! And it is 2wd now.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 44,231.
There is currently a recall for jeep cherokee ptu units. Our vehicle is experiencing all the same issues listed in the recall. The manufacturer claims that our vehicle does not fall in to the recall. Any assistance would be appreciated.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) has malfunctioned. Specifically, the Drivetrain Control Module (DTCM) is reporting a "TestFailed" status with active fault codes C1440-64 (Transfer Case Clutch Pressure Sensor) and C1477-4B (Transfer Case Clutch - Over Temperature). The vehicle and its diagnostic logs are available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The failure creates a risk of sudden loss of motive power while driving or a loss of the PARK function when stationary, both of which can lead to a collision. Furthermore, internal diagnostic data has recorded clutch plate temperatures as high as 437.1°F. This extreme thermal condition represents a significant fire hazard and the potential for mechanical seizure while the vehicle is in motion. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. The problem was confirmed by Larry H. Miller Casa Chrysler Jeep after the 01C recall software was installed, which subsequently triggered the "TestFailed" status. Additionally, an independent inspection by Universal Transmission confirmed the specific PTU fault codes and verified that the overheating issue is originating from the PTU. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The vehicle has been inspected by a manufacturer-authorized dealership (Larry H. Miller Casa Chrysler Jeep) and an independent service center (Universal Transmission). Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes, the vehicle displayed "4WD Overheating," "Temp Unavailable," and "Service 4WD" warning lamps and messages. These symptoms were formally documented in technical scan reports beginning in early March 2026.

My power train unit warning light is on. I took it to a independent licensed auto mechanic that stated there are is a open recall on this vehicle for this part. I have went to the Jeep Dealership and was told to call jeep directly. After numerous calls Jeep denies there is a open recall on this part and refuses to repair this part on the recall and I will have to pay the entire cost of repair. I also researched a Safety Recall number W47, NHTSA number 20V-343PYU Input Spine. There is also NHTSA campaign number 25V)1 1000 and a Jeep recall number is 01C.
At this time, the manufacture is unable to remedy the recall issues for the 2018 Jeep Cherokee that could affect the safety of the vehicle.

I have had the service shifter warning light come on after I start the vehicle. The most recent incident is today. Sometimes it comes on and I cannot start the vehicle. I have also had it come on and then my vehicle dies. The I have taken it in and been told no code comes up so nothing is wrong. But clearly something is wrong.
Received notification of a recall for my jeep called and they stated that there is no fix but if something happens while I’m driving that jeep would have to consume the cost this is unacceptable! This was 3/15/25 still no fix

I started noticing a knocking, vibrating sound as I accelerated. I took it to several places, and they couldn’t figure it out. Then, last Saturday, I was driving on the interstate, and completely lost power. I was stranded with no shoulder to go to. I tried to put it in park, and it almost rolled away. I took it to a Jeep dealer, and they told me it was the ptu, which they can’t do anything with because there is no fix. I am stranded with no vehicle. I offered to pay out of pocket for the repair, but there is no repair.
Manufacture can replace whole PTU unit and not just the snap ring. Issue the recall based on shaft and snap ring incompatibility engineering intolerances resulted in complete PTU unit being replaced. There is a remedy if you replaced the whole PTU unit. Car comes out of gear and rolls freely. Park does not work properly!

My 2018 Jeep Cherokee suffered a Power Transfer Unit (PTU) failure in February 2025 while my family was on vacation. The vehicle was delivered to Walker Jeep in Alexandria, Louisiana and has remained there for approximately one year. I reside in Texas, approximately five hours away. The failure involves the same PTU defect covered under Safety Recall 01C (NHTSA 25V-011). Stellantis’ Part 573 filing acknowledged the defect and scheduled final remedy notification in February 2026. After holding my vehicle for approximately 12 months awaiting recall remedy availability, I was recently informed that my vehicle does not qualify for recall coverage. Stellantis is now offering either a $4,000 buyback or requiring approximately $6,000 out-of-pocket for repair. The vehicle has been undriveable for one year due to a defect covered under a federal safety recall. I am requesting investigation into recall compliance, unreasonable delay of remedy, and denial of coverage after prolonged deprivation of use.

A common issue with Jeeps with plastic oil filter housing is the oil filter housing cracks leading to oil leaks and engine damage.
The SERVICE 4wd light came on at 206,000 miles in February . Had mechanic put code reader on and stated that the PTU is faulty. Then the service shifter light is on as well in February at 206,000 miles. It is a 2018 jeep Cherokee latitude. When checking recall my vehicle has no recall on it.
While driving the vehicle the engine loses total power and says to shift to park. No engine lights come on, no warning lights. Total loss of power is a serious issue - reading on the jeep forums this is not an uncommon problem. Have to try and safely get to the side of the road, put it in park, turn car off and attempts to restart take 1 to 6 tries. This has happened four times in 1 month

When I take a turn or slam on my brakes sometimes my vehicle shuts off and flashes battery on the dash. Even though I’ve changed the battery I’m still having the same issue. I also have issues with my fuel level. The numbers jump around constantly and seem to not add up to the miles I drive.
The oil filter housing on this vehicle is dumping oil from the back. I have had an issue with it not wanting to go over 35MPH and sounds like a misfire in my car it has had sort of an odd sound when turned on I have had to park it to avoid having any further issues but was informed that the particular part always malfunctions in Chrysler vehicles and yet no recall has been issued it seems sort of strange when the part and labor could cost over $800 to fix

Vehicle stalls when driving, will start moving again when put into park and then back into drive
2018 Jeep Cherokee has service shifter appearing multiple times in the last 2 months. It has lasted up to 3 days before resetting. My jeep has 78K miles and I'm the only owner. My jeep has randomly shut down completely while driving 65+ mph. When I restart it, the transmission makes a jerking motion and the rpms accelerate rapidly. Upon investigation I'm finding this is a HUGE problem with this model year, along with 2017 & 2019. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED before someone dies from this jeep being in an accident with little to zero time to recover power!
Service shifter message appears on screen over speedometer. All the gears light up red on the shifter. Unable to change gears unless you turn off the car and restart. Happens multiple times per year. When you search the internet this is a common occurrence and nothing is being done about it.
Power Transfer Unit is bad. Vehicle 4WD light came one and after getting it diagnosed at Jeep Dealership, they determined that my PTU had a code C14A7-97 | Stored. PTU Motor-Component or System Operation Obstructed or Blocked. The PTU part alone costs close to $2,000 alone. With labor at the dealer I’m at approximately $2,500. Vehicle is not safe to drive due to 4WD system stalling when attempting to accelerate and kicks.
My "Service 4WD" light started going on and shutting off and then it would come back a few weeks later. No incident occurred when it started. A few months in, it went to a solid light. I took it to the dealership to get it diagnosed and was told the "range shaft splines had damage" and that I would need to replace my PTU. 3 days later, FCA came out with a recall for my exact car but my VIN wasn't listed in the recall. Now it's making a weird vibration noise, and I lost acceleration while driving on my lunch when I was turning left at a light. I tried to accelerate but it wouldn't go any faster than 20-30mph. So I pulled over, shut the car, off and turned it back on and it went back to normal.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle lost drive power in the middle of the road, nearly causing another vehicle to crash into the vehicle. The contact stated upon restarting the vehicle, the check engine warning light illuminated. Additionally, the vehicle failed to exceed 8 MPH. The contact pulled to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that a fee would be charged for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V011000(Power Train); however, the VIN tool search indicated that the VIN was not included in any recalls. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000.
I have had several times where I will be driving and the engine cuts out and you lose all power and power steering. The screen comes up and says shift to park or neutral press brake + gear. I put in park and after few minutes it usually restarts on first try. The most recent i tried about 10 times and call toe truck. I live in northern maine and below zero temps and tow truck couldn't arrive for 4-5 hrs. I live in remote area and only 1 option and they were hours away. I was in the middle of the road and was blocking traffic for bigger vehicles. After about 30 minutes and many attempts it finally restarted. I immediately drove to garage and they scan for codes and there were none. It was starting normally and running fine.bbthis has happened driving in traffic at stop light or going very slow around sharp corners or after sitting and then taking off. There has been many scenarios all could cause traffic accidents as it is out of your control and you never know when it will happen. It's gone months without doing it and then it happen multiple times. I live in very remote are and drive to the city for appts and travel alot of times after dark and after hours to even get towed . I don't feel safe driving my vehicle anymore fear of accident, bad area, temperatures, being stranded with no cell phone coverage. I live on dirt road and can't always count on help right away. It's happened too many times where I don't feel safe in a vehicle I love. I have tried oil changes, spark plugs, battery and I know there was a few others and nothing works. This has been happening since 50k miles and now 127k. I want to keep this vehicle but not feeling safe. I another garage visit scheduled next week to see if there is anything else to try.
Vehicle: 2018 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk VIN: [XXX] Recall: Manufacturer #01C / NHTSA #25V-011 Complaint: On January 16, 2025, FCA US (Stellantis/Jeep) issued a recall (01C, NHTSA 25V-011) for 2017–2019 Jeep Cherokee vehicles due to improperly seated input shaft snap rings in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). The recall summary itself acknowledges that this defect can cause uncontrolled input shaft movement, spline damage, and/or range fork damage, leading to loss of motive power while driving or loss of PARK function while stationary — both creating a serious crash and injury risk. The recall notice states that the remedy will be a reprogramming of the Drivetrain Control Module (DTCM) with software to detect excessive wear and replace the PTU if needed, along with a warranty extension. However, as of this filing, the recall status for my vehicle remains “Incomplete, Remedy Not Yet Available.” Owners are being left to drive vehicles with a known risk of sudden power loss or loss of PARK, and Stellantis has failed to provide a timeline for the remedy, a loaner vehicle, or interim safety protections. This constitutes an unreasonable delay in providing a remedy to a recognized safety defect under 49 U.S.C. Chapter 301. I request NHTSA investigate Stellantis for failing to make the remedy available in a timely manner, and to compel the manufacturer to expedite corrective action. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
