The auto stop/start feature on this vehicle continues to have issues after parts such as; alternator, batteries and cables were replaced twice!
A few months ago my jeep started giving a "stop safely vehicle will shut off soon" message on the dashboard. It comes and goes randomly, I could be started the car or driving it. I had to get it towed when it did it on the highway. The dealership said it was the batteries, we had those replaced. It was fine for about a week and then started doing it again. Took it again and now they are saying it is the alternator or the starter. Both of those were checked and it isn't that either. I now have a car that I am paying for and can not drive. Called Jeep customer service, they could not find a solution. Multiple people on multiple different forums are complaining about this same issue without being able to find a solution.
Since we’ve bought this car pre owned last year with 48,000 miles we’ve been experiencing bad engine oil consumption. I’ve tried to get it looked at by the car dealership we got this vehicle at and they couldn’t find no oil leaks. I’ve done some research myself on this topic and I have ran into information of others having this same experience with their similar vehicle and engine models. I do know that they’ve sent out recalls on this issue but my vehicle seems to not have been placed on this recall as I did speak with recalls.mopar.com seem like they can’t help me with the issue. Please if I can get any help with this issue it will be really appreciated.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated while driving 30-40 MPH, the message "Stop Safely - Vehicle Will Shut Off Soon" was displayed. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road. The contact stated that upon restarting the vehicle on several occasions, the messages "Service Engine" and “Stop/Start System Unavailable - Service Stop/Start System" were displayed, and the battery warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the failure recurred while driving, and the vehicle shut off while depressing the brake pedal to pull to the side of the roadway. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to restart on several occasions and was towed to the dealer. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times. The dealer secured the positive cable to the junction box, performed an oil change, and replaced cylinder #2 ignition coils. Additionally, an independent mechanic replaced the batteries and the spark plugs; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the engine was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was determined that both batteries needed to be replaced, and the BCM software needed to be updated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.
Connect screen delamination. Screen is hitting all kinds of things on its own, calling 911 while I'm driving causing me to have to take my eyes off the road to frantically hang up the calls every few seconds.
My transmission oil cooler failed causing issues with the coolant system P2797-00 Auxiliary Transmission Fluid Pump & U0155-00 lost communication with cluster/cabin compartment node B0020-13 Left side seat Airbag deployment squib 1- circuit open Body Control Module front left turn lamp control-Circuit short to Battery B163A-15 & U0155-00 lost communication with cluster/cabin compartment node Ground wire from engine to battery causing misfiring issues with start-stop relay & starter relay that both had to be replaced along with both Batteries.
"Coolant Temperature High" warning occur frequently at any situation doesn't matter time or weather. Especially when waiting at a cross section for green light or turning. It shut off the car once on the high way, lucky I was not injured. The problem started more than a year ago. I brought it to the dealer and they ran a thousand of test but could not diagnose the issue. They told me they may have to dissemble the car to find the root cause and returned the car to me, asked me to try to keep driving. After that the problem seemed disappear but it came up again a week ago.
Head light problem lights not working took to dealership brought a new headlight assembly that didn’t fix the problem waited 7 hours they still couldn’t fix the problem took vehicle home I replaced a fuse, relay, and bulb that fix the problem . Six months later the same problem headlight please look in to this , need to be recalled.
While driving I often get an oil warning light and have had my engine system entirely and randomly shut down while driving. I have the oil changed regularly and serviced regularly and still have this problem. The entire system shuts down while driving and I’m left unable to move. It’s incredibly dangerous!
Multiple times now while driving the vehicles emergency park comes on by its self. The vehicle stops and turns off while in the middle of the road. Other vehicles have had to quickly stop and go around. Recently the engine light has appeared. It happens 1-3 times while driving. Mainly while turning a corner.

CAR HAS BEEN STOPPING WHILE DRIVING ON MAJOR ROADWAYS. REQUIRES A RESTART IN THE MIDDLE OF A HIGHWAY AND DOES NOT EVEN MAKE IT TO THE ROADSIDE TO RESTART. UPON BRINGING IT IN TO BE CHECKED, IT HAD 0 BUT NO REPORTED LEAK AND OIL LIGHT DID NOT TURN ON. PURCHASED USED JUST 2 MONTHS AGO AND ONLY DROVE 6K MILES. WAS TOLD TO CHANGE OIL EVERY 5K MILES BECUASE THIS MODEL CONSUMES EXCESSIVE OIL. I SEARCHED AND FOUND THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE HOWEVER MY VIN # DOES NOT SHOW A RECALL.
My Radio has formed a bubble in it which is causing it to glitch and my backup camera to malfunction when driving and backing up I hit my fence because my radio glitched and keep having to replace the auxiliary battery in my jeep it’s been replaced several times
Burning through oil! No light on for oil and not to mileage for oil change. Happened to check oil this morning and there was only a tiny bit on stick like hardly any. This is not the only issue with this vehicle.
My car has completely shut off at an intersection/stop light twice. Shuts off while in drive tells me I need to start again. Emergency brake engages. One of the times I had to be towed out of the intersection. I spent $500 replacing both batteries thinking it may be that. A month later (today) car strands me at a stoplight again. Same thing car cuts off and emergency brakes engages. This time after 4 attempts I was finally able to start it to get out of way of traffic’s.
Car randomly shuts off while driving regardless of speed
When I fill up with gas, the car will shake and die, upon starting. Due to this, I no longer fill up the car - I merely put $20 in gas - at a time.
Unknown. The rear seat belts in the vehicle are being ripped by the plastic trim that the belts go into. There was no accident or anything.
I leased a 2018 jeep compass in the month of September that year brand new. light kept appearing on my dash that I was not familiar with. Basically it had to do with parking on a hill indicator, the radio wouldn’t always work either, and a loud boom on Highway. However we parked the car on flat grounds at all times. That was the beginning of the malfunctioning with this vehicle. I had just got an oil change end of 2019, one day driving in an alley area with my 2year old daughter, my car literally shut off on me while driving at speeds of 10 mph. Everything shut off. Fortunately I was able to turn it back on and the next day took it to the dealership. The result was I needed a brand new engine. WHAT, it’s a little over a year old how can this be? The oil was gone all cylinders were shot, not sure what that meant but a month without my car I received it back with a new refurbished engine. Fortunately all was covered under the manufacturer warranty. Thought the problems were solved. Nope it constantly has malfunctions with the radio, reverse camera doesn’t always work, a loud bang happens when I’m on the highway at the highway speed, let my foot off the accelerator and a loud bang happens. On [XXX], in the middle of an intersection my foot was on the brake and the on/off engine thing went off. Then I proceeded to accelerate and the car shut off. This time all the lights were on inside the dash area but my brake locked up so hard and the steering wheel along with the windows wouldn’t work. I placed the car in park and the e brake and for 15 minutes tried turning it back on. It was terrifying, it turned on and brought it to the dealership and explained the situation. It’s currently there now and at the moment they say it’s the battery. I DO NOT feel safe in this car being that I always have my children in the car all the time. An investigation needs to be seriously opened with these vehicles. I’ve been paying for a car that has potentially risked my families life. radio software prevents the rearview image from displaying on the center screen when in Reverse.
With absolutely zero prior indication of a problem, the car became completely immobilized in drive while attempting to turn after being stopped at a traffic light on a busy four lane road. Every imaginable code was cycling through on the dash and all warning code lights came on. I was unable to shift the car into any gear. Meaning, I could not shift into neutral to push the car safely out of the way of traffic. Additionally the car could not be turned off. I could not roll down the windows and the touchscreen was inoperable. After approximately 6-8 minutes I was able to shift into neutral to push the car to a safer area. The same immobilization issue happened 3 days later after the battery and alternator were replaced. This time, I put the car in reverse and it became immobilized in exactly the same way. The car turned itself off after approximately 10 minutes and was towed to the dealership where it has been for 30 days. The dealership scanned the codes on the car and the result was 300+ error codes. The dealer cannot diagnose the problem but they have been able to replicate the issue. The car is well maintained and there were no warning messages or other symptoms of any problem prior to the first incident January 27, 2024. The car remains at the dealer and it is available for inspection.
I have spent over 2500.00 on my HID headlights. They keep blowing I have replaced the headlight assembly along with bulbs many times. From what I can read it is an ongoing problem with this model. Also my lane departure system goes from side to side does not keep my jeep centered in the lane.
DRIVING AT FREEWAY SPEED, THE ENGINE DIES. STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP AND I COAST TO A STOP. VERY DANGEROUS. AFTER 10-15 MINUTES, JEEP WILL START AND DRIVE AN UNKNOWN AMOUNT OF TIME AND SAME THING WILL HAPPEN. I TOOK TO A LOCAL GARAGE BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE SHOP MANAGER SAID THERE IS NO ENGINE CODE OR DIRECTION FOR THEM TO DETERMINE WHAT IS WRONG. INTERNET SEARCH SHOWS THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH 2017-2019 JEEP COMPASS. HOWEVER APPARENTLY NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE KNOW THEY CAN FILE A REPORT WITH NHTSA OR THERE WOULD BE A GIGANTIC NUMBER MORE COMPLAINTS THAN THERE ARE. SOMEONE WILL DIE IN A CRASH BECAUSE OF THIS WELL KNOWN ISSUE. HOPEFULLY SOMETHING WILL BE DONE BEFORE ITS TOO LATE. BATTERIES REPLACED, CAR SERVICED, AND STILL CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. HAS HAPPENED AROUND 5 TIMES IN LAST 2 WEEKS. AN ISSUE ALL OVER THE INTERNET AND CLEARLY A FAULT IN MANUFACTURING.
In middle of driving, the vehicle suddenly shifts out of gear and won’t accelerate, multiple warning lights appear in dash all at the same time and car at times the vehicle won’t even turn off
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and was jerking. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact drove the vehicle to the residence and used an ODB scanner but was unable to retrieve a fault code. The contact started the vehicle and the vehicle drove as intended. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on 3 separate occasions. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer and was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 32,500.
When the vehicle halts at a red light or stop sign, it activates the auto stop/start feature, causing the engine to shut off. However, when I release the brake to accelerate, the car might briefly restart and then stalls. This has happened several times.
This motor has lots of recalls it has ran out of oil in under 2000 miles the car will stop in the middle of the road cut off and the emergency break will come on won't move until you put oil in to almost got killed 4 times dealership refused to fix it I have a extended warranty and they still refuse to replace the motor very dangerous car to be on the road
Transmission hard shift especially when cold. Makes grinding noise when shifting into 3rd. We have not taken it to a dealer cause we bought it used and it’s 62 thousand miles on the car and 60 thousand is supposedly the limit for the warranty. Car has also stalled while making turns to the left or sometimes when driving straight. At highway speeds when I have gone and tried to accelerate more I push the accelerator down and nothing happens. Then all of a sudden the car takes off with a jerk and I have to hit the brakes cause it was not expected. Auto engine shutoff failure light comes on for no reason. Continually get number 4 cylinder misfire check engine warning which disappears after the car is restarted. Consumes oil like nothing I have ever seen always adding oil. Can’t check the transmission fluid level cause manufacturer did not put a dipstick for the transmission so I have to take it to the dealer to see if that is low. Don’t need the cost just for them to tell me it’s fine.
I was getting my car serviced, I was getting a State inspection the mechanic told me they could not inspect the vehicle due to the fact that a headlight was not working.. they tried replacing the headlight it still did not work.. I had to leave without getting my vehicle inspected!! I was going to try to take it to the dealer to try and get it fixed.. I checked on line and found several other Jeep owners of this make and model also 2018 Jeep Compass had electrical problems involving the headlights.. at times I would turn vehicle on and both lights would be on. On other times only one headlight would be working. Some times if I would cycle thru the switch both lights would come on, other times not.. This is unsafe driving around with one headlight and not knowing when it will happen.I have spoken to both dealerships in the area, and they are no help.. they want me to bring vehicle in to troubleshoot the problem openended I do not have the money for this and Since it is happening to other people with this particular year and make vehicle I think it is a problem that should be looked into..by Jeep! This just started on my vehicle when the mileage reached approximately 32,000 miles I have owned this vehicle since 2019. Thanks for any help available..
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine overheated. The coolant temperature indicated that the engine was overheating. In addition, the contact became aware of smoke coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed to the dealer; however, the contact was informed that the failure was not duplicated. The following day, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics where the vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed by both independent mechanics that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
The vehicle just stopped functioning in the middle of me driving on a road with no shoulder, it spontaneously decelerated the gas did nothing, and ultimately rolled to a stop. I shut it off and it never restarted, the ignition button just made a terrible noise. I was left stranded in a bad service area no longer with the benefit of my car’s wifi because it wouldnt turn on.
I was hit from behind on the interstate 2 weeks ago. My Jeep Compass was stopped in heavy traffic on the interstate. A large white pickup truck hit my car first going at least 80 mph. He did not see that traffic was stopped. This caused my jeep to roll and come to a stop on the passenger side on the ground and the driver side in the air. My airbags did deploy, but not on impact. They deployed after the jeep came to a stop on it's side. After impact and after rolling. The airbags were not useful after the jeep stopped moving. This needs to be addressed. I was hurt and did go to the ER. I did not have any passengers, thankfully, they may not have survived that. My seatbelt held me in well, it was hard to get out of it and I have many bruises from the seatbelt. My only issue was the timing of the airbags. They were very late to deploy. Thought you should know. If this happens to others in an accident, many people will be hurt. The vehicle was only inspected by the insurance company to determine the repair costs and then declared a total loss. I am not sure if anyone else inspected the vehicle. There were no warning lights prior to the accident. I tried to upload photos, but it would not work. I do have photos and a police report from this accident.
While I’m at a stop sign or light, and I let my foot off the break, the high coolant temp light comes on and the car stalls. This has happened at least 30 times over the last 3 years. Today I was almost killed in an accident crossing a busy intersection because I stalled in the middle of the crossing after stopping at a stop sign. I’ve brought the jeep to dealerships and shops and none of them can recreate the event so they don’t know what’s wrong. They’ve checked everything that they can think to check. I’ve seen many complaints online of this happening to others with no resolve. What will it take? Someone is going to get killed. Sometimes it takes up to 15 minutes for the car to start again. Other times I have to have it towed. Today it took about 10 minutes with a lineup of cars behind me.
My gas pedal stuck flat to the floor and the plastic gas pedal broke causing me to hit a cement pillar in front of Knick trip
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, both the driver and passenger side rear windows would roll down independently. The contact also stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would stall as several warning lights would appear on the instrument panel. The contact called the dealer about the failure and was given an estimate for a diagnostic. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic who failed to diagnose the failure. The contact then stated that while driving in inclement, icy weather; the vehicle began to slide upon the depression of the brake pedal while approaching a stop light. As the vehicle began to slide, the vehicle shut off without warning. The contact lost complete control of the vehicle as the vehicle crashed into a light pole. The air bags did not deploy upon impact. The contact did not sustain any injuries. A police report was filed and the light pole was knocked down as a result of the impact. The vehicle was towed from the scene to the contact's grandmother's home where it remained in their possession. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 87,000.
I was driving to work and my car stopped accelerating on its own. My speedometer read 0 and I rolled into a parking lot. I was not able to drive any longer. I turned the car off, then turned it back on. The car made a loud grinding noise, then turned on. I was able to leave the parking lot and started driving home, less than half a mile away. I entered my driveway and it happened again. I rolled to a stop in front of my house then turned the car off. This also happened to my 2008 Jeep Compass. Car parts.com states “: the CVT transmission on their Jeep Compass would overheat whenever the outside temperature is high or when they’re driving at high speeds on the interstate. Their vehicles would suddenly produce unusual whining noises and lose the ability to maintain their speed.” This is what happened to me, 3 times in the last week.
I purchased the vehicle on [XXX] from Mall Chevy in Cherry Hill NJ. From the first day, i was getting an intermittent A! warning for the vehicle start/stop function. The vehicle would feel like it is trying to turn off when not active. Finally on [XXX], it stayed on. The entire time i have been trying to get the dealership to fix it, they refused to look at it. The transmission keeps slipping, jerking forward and back, wants to take off at a stop. They refuse to acknowledge. I finally took it to Performance Dodge in Woodbury NJ, they determined it was a defective IBS( Intelligent battery sensor). Then a BCM issue was determined and 2 wires had insulation exposed, an OHMED was needed as well as HVAC and DTCM updates. It still needs ABS and TCM module work. The vehicle still feels like it wants to shut off, jerks while accelerating and makes a banging sound INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I have notice for some time now that I have been getting oil changes done before my scheduled time. For example, I got my oil changed August 25, 2023, at 66403 mileages. According to the return for service sticker next service date is February 25, 2024, at 71403 mileages. The current mileage on my Jeep is 68599. My concern is not only I require frequent oil changes, but my check engine light is on, and my vehicle stops on me in on-going traffic. I take my Jeep into Griffin's Hub Chrysler Jeep Dodge S 27th Street Milwaukee. On August 25th I informed the 1st technician that my check engine light came on along with low oil/change oil light. He completed a code reader/car diagnostic. After the oil change, I spoke with service advisor Eric P who spoke with the previous tech regarding the diagnostic. I was scheduled to come back in on 9/7 due to a recall issue with check engine light and low oil pressure but when I returned on 9/7 the check engine light was off therefore showing nothing was wrong. I'm concerned because I'm having oil changes before scheduled mileage & service time. This has happened numerous times. I'm concerned because of the check engine/low oil/check oil lights are all coming on and more importantly I'm concerned because my vehicle stops in on-going traffic at any giving time which is extremely dangerous. I decided to reach out to the NHTSA during the recent incident for more assistance with this matter. I am thankful for not being on the expressway.
Car struggles to start, Dashboard shows coolant temperature high then does not start. Usually it will start again once battery is jumped. It has happened 3 times since August 2023. Unsafe because it happens unpredictability and has left me stranded with a child in the car. It cannot be reproduced because it cannot be predicted. It has happened in different weather each time and at different times of the day.
Head lights not working.
On 11/11/23 we were traveling the highway, center lane at approximately 65mph. The jeep just shut off and completely stopped. No warnings, no lights on. Car has gas, 1/2 tank, temp fine. It did start right back up but this was EXTREMELY dangerous as cars and semis traveling 70mph were swerving around both sides of us.
The driver side headlight went out approximately 8 months after purchasing the vehicle used which was out of the 6 months that the dealer had a warranty. I have replaced the headlight and ballast and it is still not working properly. I have checked and confirmed voltage by testing the driver side against the passenger side which does work and all voltages match going into the rear plug of the headlight assembly. Looking on forums, I am not the only individual with this problem and the dealership wants to charge $170.00 dollars to run a diagnostic. This problem is certainly not due to lack of preventative maintenance, this appears to be a defect in the vehicle itself.
My car stalled as I was about to turn after stopped at a red light. I tried to restart it several times and then I looked down and noticed the emergency brake light was on. I turned it off, tried starting it again and then it seemed fine. Later as I was mid turn going left through an intersection the car partially stalled where I could not finish my acceleration through the intersection ( it was still on but I could not accelerate however I was able to get it to sort of drift to the side of the road where it then stalled completely). Thankfully there were no vehicles headed through the intersection as I was trying to get out of the way. When I looked down the emergency brake light was on again. I did not receive any warning lights prior to this happening. I currently have it in the shop to have the issue looked at but I have had numerous issues with this vehicle since I bought it. Previous issues were not as scary as this one.
Jeep Compass shut off without warning at highway speeds, in the middle of highway route 1 while I was going 50 miles per hour. State police had to stay while I got car towed out of road hazards way. When this has happened, the vehicle was no longer able to accelerate, and the power steering did not work. Loss of power steering made the vehicle difficult to steer off the roadway to safety.
After 40,000 miles on the vehicle The stereo screen went black. By doing so, the backup camera does not work enabling us to see what is behind the vehicle.
Stop Safely Will Shut Off Soon appears frequently. Car cuts off while driving. Will cut back on sometimes and sometimes not. Has been happening for at least 3 months now. It’s well documented online that dealerships and manufacturer are aware of this issue. There is no recall issued for this situation. I want the car replaced.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that after coming to a complete stop, the vehicle stalled while making a left turn while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights illuminated after the failure. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to the residence. The next day, the contact restarted the vehicle; however, the vehicle failed to restart while parked at a gas station. The dealer was not notified of the failure. An email was sent to the manufacturer about the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
The headlights do not work reliably. The first time this happened was in June but seemingly resolved itself until this last week. Sometimes the passenger side only works, sometimes the driver side only, sometimes neither side. They will come on and go off or only one will come on or go off as they please. There is no pattern or rhyme or reason. There are no warning lights; in fact, the car says Lights On, the symbol for the high beams shows as on when I pull or push forward, but neither is. This has not been inspected yet but will be shortly. There are several complaints online about this intermittent headlight issue. Even after relays, ballasts, and fuses have been changed. The car is only 5 years old, the last thing I should be worrying about is the headlights.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed in a heavy rainstorm, the front driver's side floor and rear passenger’s side floor became flooded with rainwater, that had entered the vehicle from a failed floor seal. The contact stated that while attempting to depress the brake pedal, her foot had slipped off the pedal several times due to the water inside the vehicle on the floor. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and the contact was informed that the floor seal had corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 42,000.
SUV has died several times for no reason. Taken to dealership several times. They laugh and say it’s normal for this compass. Engine oil is constantly low and they say that it’s common for oil to just disappear on these suvs. Nothing can be recreated at the dealership each time. I’ve been driving down the road with two kids in the car and traffic behind me and the car just dies and doesn’t want to restart. This morning my heater stopped working. No lights came on. No sensors went off. Car was out of coolant and not one single low sensor light came on. Oil has to be added in between each 3000 mile oil change. Seat has broken twice. No sensors for oil low. No sensors for coolant. Nothing to let you know your engine is 3.5 quarts low of oil before the 3000 mile oil change is due. It’s bad when the dealership knows all of this and it’s considered normal to spend $28000 on a vehicle which has all these issues! Now there is a popping noise when you turn the wheels and i see the lower control arms are on recall but not for mine. Engine oil issue is on recall but not for mine. Is it going to take someone getting killed when their car stalls out before anything is done? I’ve also had to replace the batteries already last year and now my auto start stop system has quit working again. Last time this happened it was the battery. So I’m going to have to replace it again. Worst vehicle I’ve ever had.
