CLOCK SPRING ASSEMBLY IS MOUNTED BETWEEN STEERING COLUMN AND STEERING WHEEL TO PROVIDE THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION BETWEEN THE STEERING COLUMN AND STEERING WHEEL FOR STEERING WHEEL MOUNTED SWITCHES AND THE AIRBAG. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE PURCHASED TO HAVE A SCRAPING NOISE WITHIN THE STEERING COLUMN FIXED THAT HAS EXISTED SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW. DEALER INFORMED ME THAT THE CLOCKSPRING MECHANISM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AS IT WAS BROKEN. CLOCK SPRING PROVIDES ELECTRICAL INTERCONNECTION TO THE HORN (WHICH WORKS FINE), THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCHES (WHICH WORK FINE), STEREO CONTROLS (WHICH WORK FINE) AND THE AIRBAG. THREE OF THE FOUR SYSTEMS WORKED PROPERLY AS VERIFIED THROUGH DAILY USE WHILE DRIVING. THE ONLY SYSTEM THAT CANNOT BE TESTED BY THE DRIVER IS THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THE COMPUTER FOR THE SRS IS SUPPOSED TO MONITOR ALL SYSTEM COMPONENTS FOR PROPER OPERATION (INCLUDING THE INITIATOR MECHANISM FOR THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG) AND PROVIDE A FAILURE NOTIFICATION TO THE DRIVER VIA A FLASHING AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. NO INDICATION OF SYSTEM FAILURE WAS EVER PROVIDED BY A FLASHING WARNING LIGHT. DEALER WOULD NOT PROVIDE DETAILS AS TO WHAT PORTION OF THE CLOCKSPRING MECHANISM FAILED, BUT SINCE THREE OF THE FOUR SYSTEMS THAT ARE CONNECTED VIA THE CLOCKSPRING WORKED PROPERLY, I HAVE TO ASSUME THE AIRBAG SYSTEM CONNECTION HAD FAILED. IT IS MY OPINION THAT THIS INCIDENT NEEDS FURTHER INVESTIGATION, SINCE THE OBVIOUS RESULT COULD BE FAILURE OF THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG TO DEPLOY AS REQUIRED IN A COLLISION. *AK
ON MY 2000 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO, STEERING HAS TO CONSTANTLY BE CORRECTED. THE VEHICLE WILL "WANDER" INTO ANOTHER LANE UNLESS YOU CONSTANTLY CORRECT THE STEERING. THE STEERING FEELS VERY DISCONNECTED. DEALER SAYS THAT THIS IS JUST THE WAY THE STEERING WORKS. *AK

VEHICLE HAS ALWAYS PULLED TO THE RIGHT. CASTER/CAMBER ARE OUT OF FACTORY SPECS, BUT THE DEALER SAYS THERE IS NO WAY TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM.*AK

REAR SEAT BELT LATCH PLATE FAILS TO CINCH OR TIGHTEN BELT TO BE USED WITH A CHILD SEAT. CAN PULL ON STRAP & BELTS WOULD LOOSEN UP. CANNOT INSTALL CHILD SEATS DUE TO CINCH LATCH PLATE KEEP COMING LOOSE. *AK

THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH ELECTRICAL SYSTEM CAUSING FUEL LIGHT TO COME ON OR NOT COME ON WHEN FUEL IS LOW. ALARM SYSTEM IS MALFUNCTIONING. DRIVER'S SEAT MEMORY IS NO LONGER FUNCTIONAL. KEYLESS REMOTE WORKS SPORADICALLY. OWNER HAS BEEN TO DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES FOR THESE INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS.*AK

SEVRE BRAKE SHUDDER WHEN SLOWING FROM HIGHWAY SPEEDS. BRAKES PULSATE WHEN APPLIED ON IN TOWN DRIVING. WE OWN 2, JEEP GRAND CHEROKEES AND HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH BOTH VEHICLES. PARTS WERE BACKORDERED WHICH INDICATES THE DEMAND IS GREATER THAN THE SUPPLY. I BELIEVE CHRYSLER KNOWS THEY HAVE A PROBLEM BUT ARE FAILING TO CONSIDER THE SAFETY OF CONSUMERS. WE CONTACTED CHRYSLER TO SEE IF WE COULD GET THEM WARRANTIED. ONE THEY DID THE OTHER THEY DENIED. THIS IS OUR 3RD JEEP PURCHASE. ROTORS ARE WARPING. ALL MY FRIENDS WITH JEEPS HAVE HAD ROTORS FAIL WITHIN 20K MILES. MUST BE DEFECTIVE PARTS FROM MANUFACTURER. VEHICLE SHUDDRERS UNCONTROLLABLY WHEN BRAKING HARD. IF THE DRIVER RARELY BRAKES HARD, HE MAY NOT REALIZE THE EXTENT OF THE PROBLEM UNTIL HE FORCEFULLY APPLIES THE BRAKES. AT THAT POINT, IT IS VERY EASY TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT. SEARCH THE INTERNET, THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF POSTINGS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM! DO SOMETHING TO MAKE JEEP RECALL AND FIX THE PROBLEMS BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. THIS IS A CAR THAT FAMILIES BUY BECAUSE IT HAS A GOOD "SAFETY RECORD, BUT IT HAS A SERIOUS DEFECT.*AK
SPECIFIC PROBLEM PERTAINS TO FRONT ROTORS. FRONT ROTORS WEAR OUT EVERY 4000 TO 6000 MILES OR WHENEVER THEY GET HOT, WHICH CAUSES SERVERE PULSATION WHEN BRAKING AT SPEED OVER 45 MPH. WE ARE NOW LOOKING AT REPLACING ROTORS FOR THE 3RD TIME IN 18 MONTHS AND LESS THAN 21,000 MILES. DEALER HAS EXTENDED WARRANTY TO 36,000 MILES, HOWEVER WE WANT A LONG TERM SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM. WE HAVE TWO FRIENDS WHO OWN THE SAME CAR AND THEY HAVE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. *AK
WHEN BRAKING AT ANY SPEED, THE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATES AND THE WHOLE TRUCK SHIMMIES. MY ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS HAVE BEEN REPLACED 4 TIMES WITH ONLY 20,000+ MILES ON THE TRUCK AND IT IS OCCURING FOR THE 5TH TIME NOW. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT THIS IS GOING TO CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. IT IS VERY DISTURBING TO BE DRIVING AROUND IN AN UNSAFE VEHICLE THAT HAS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH ITS BRAKING SYSTEM. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ASAP.*AK

WHEN APPLYING ABS BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN OR TO STOP WHILE ON A ROUGH ROAD, BRAKES WOULD LOCK UP , AND ROTORS WOULD SHIMMY. TOOK VEHICLE TO MECHANIC, AND INFORMED CONSUMER ROTORS NEEDED TO BE TURNED. IF ROTORS BECOME HOT, AND GO THROUGH WATER, THEY WOULD BECOME WARPED. *AK
I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE IN TO THE SHOP ONCE AT 12,000 MILES BECAUSE EVERY TIME I PUT ON THE BRAKES ABOVE 45 MPH THE TRUCK WOULD SHUDDER DRASTICALLY. THEY TURNED THE ROTORS AND IT WAS FINE FOR 3OOO OR 4OOO MORE BUT IT HAS CONTINUED AGAIN. I ACTUALLY GOT A NOTE LEFT ON MY WINDSHIELD GIVING ME YOU WEB ADDRESS FROM ANOTHER JEEP OWNER REGARDING THEIR SAME COMPLAINT. IT SEEMS TO BE A DEFECT IN THE METAL USED FOR THE BRAKING SYSTEM IF I HAVE TO TAKE IT IN EVERY 4K MILES. GOD FORBID THAT THEY SHOULD EVER COMPLETELY FAIL. *AK
VEHICLE WAS PLACED IN THE PARK POSITION. THEN, CONSUMER SHIFTED GEAR FROM PARK TO REVERSE, BACKED UP ABOUT A FEW INCHES, AND VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED MORE THAN HALF A BLOCK IN REVERSE, CRASHING INTO AN APARTMENT BUILDING. VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER DETAILS.*AK
THE PROBLEM I'VE BEEN HAVING WITH MY JEEP IS THAT THE BRAKES SHAKE VIOLENTLY WHEN SLOWING FROM SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 40 MPH. THE ROTORS HAVE BEEN REPLACED ONCE BEFORE, AND WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO BE REPLACED AGAIN (WHEN I CAN GET THE CAR TO THE DEALER TO GET IT DONE). AFTER READING THROUGH THE LIST OF COMPLAINTS AND SEEING THIS ONE ON THERE 20+ TIMES, I KIND OF FEEL LIKE THERE SHOULD BE SOME SORT OF RECALL ON THE VEHICLE.
FRONT DISC BRAKE ROTORS FAIL AFTER 4,000-6,000 MILES ON MY 2000 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. IT IS NOT AN ISOLATED PROBLEM; CHRYSLER KNOWS OF IT, DEALERS LIKE MINE REPLACE THEM REGULARLY, AND AS LONG AS THE NEW ONES FAIL WITHIN THE 12,000 MILE WARRANTY WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO. BUT CHRYSLER HAS NO APPARENT INTENTION OF DEALING WITH THIS PROBLEM IN ANY OTHER FASHION. MY CAR IS UNSAFE DUE TO BRAKE PULSATION ONCE THE ROTORS HAVE FAILED; I TOW A 2-HORSE TRAILER WITH IT REGULARLY, AND THE DANGER FROM THE BRAKES IS HEIGHTENED WITH THE ADDED WEIGHT. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE FAILURE OF CHRYSLER TO DEAL WITH THIS AS A SAFETY ISSUE. GIVEN THE HISTORY OF BRAKE PROBLEMS ON PREVIOUS YEARS, THIS SHOULD ALSO BE OF GREATER CONCERN TO NHTSA THAN IT SEEMS TO BE. THE "FIX" FOR PREVIOUS BRAKE PROBLEMS (LARGE RECALLS FOR EARLIER MODELS) IN NEWER MODELS HAS INTRODUCED NEW PROBLEMS. MY JEEP IS UNSAFE TO HANDLE AT SPEEDS OVER 30 MPH DUE TO BRAKE PULSATION, FRONT END WOBBLING, ETC., WHENEVER THE PROBLEM HAS RECURRED. IT IS CURRENTLY IN THE SHOP AGAIN FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. *AK
SEVERE SHAKING IN STEERING WHEN BRAKE APPLIED STARTED AROUND 17000 MILES, WHEN VEHICLE PUT IN REVERSE IT HESITATES AND ALMOST STALLS THEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN TAKES OFF IN REVERSE ACTUALLY SPINNING TIRES, VEHICLE PULLS HEAVILY TO RIGHT, DEALER CLAIMED IT WAS DUE TO THE CROWN IN ROADS
VEHICLE BEGAN TO EXPERIENCE VIBRATIONS AND PULSATIONS IN STEERING WHEEL AND BRAKE PEDAL, CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE INTO DEALERSHIP, AND ALL FOUR ROTORS WERE REPLACED AS WELL THE FRONT BRAKE PADS, HOWEVER 10,000 MILES LATER FRONT ROTORS WERE WARPED AGAIN, CONSUMER EXPERIENCED PROBLEM FOR A THIRD TIME.*JB
THE TRANSMISSION FUNCTIONS IMPROPERY, AT LOW SPEEDS THE TRANSMISSION CAN UNEXPECTEDLY DOWN SHIFT CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SLOW AT A RAPID RATE. *YH
WHEN TRANSMISSION IS TRYING TO SHIFT INTO ANOTHER GEAR, WOULD MAKE A CLUNKING NOISE. HAVE TAKEN VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP 6 TIMES FOR THE PROBLEM. MECHANIC HAD INDICATED THAT NOISE COULD NOT BE LOCATED , INFORMED OWNER ALL JEEPS MAKE CLUNKING NOISES. AK *JB
CAR WAS IDLING IN PARK WHILE DRIVER STEPPED OUT OF VECHILE MOMENTARILY. CAR STARTED GOING IN REVERSE AND HIT CAR APPROX. 12FT BEHIND IT CAUSING THE OTHER VEHICLE TO BE FLAT BED TOWED OFF PREMISES FOR EXTENSIVE DAMAGE!*AK
WE RETURNED THE GRAND CHEROKEE BECAUSE WHILE WE WERE DRIVING AND HITTING THE BRAKES, THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO SHAKE. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD US THAT THE ROTORS WERE WARPED. THEY WEREN'T COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE WE HAD MORE THAN 12000 MILES ON IT. THE ROTORS WERE WARPED, BUT THE BRAKES WERE EXCELLENT. WE FEEL THAT THE ROTORS SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED. WE'VE ONLY HAD THE NEW JEEP A LITTLE OVER A YEAR. HOW CAN ROTORS GET WARPED THAT QUICKLY?????*AK

A TSB HAS BEEN ISSUED. *AK CONSUMER STATES WHILE BRAKING, VIBRATION OCCURS TO THE STEERING WHEEL AND BRAKE PEDAL, MANUFACTURER STATES FAILURES ARE NORMAL WEAR AT OR BELOW 12000 MILES. *SLC
