THE CAR COOLANT FINISHED
I TOOK MY VEHICLE INTO LARSON JEEP DODGE IN PUYALLUP, WA TO HAVE TWO RECALLS PREFORMED. ONE OF THE OPEN RECALL CAMPAIGNS ARE RECALL F25. THIS RECALL INVOLVES REPLACING THE ELECTRIC COOLING FAN. IF NOT REPLACED IT COULD SEPARATE CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE RADIATOR, ENGINE, OR BODILY INJURY. I PICKED UP MY VEHICLE ON THE DAY THAT IT WAS IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. I SIGNED AND WAS GIVING A REPAIR ORDER NUMBER JECS380694 DATED 2/25/2016. THE INVOICE STATES THE RECALL WAS PREFORMED AND THE COOLING FANS WERE REPLACED AS DIRECTED BY THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. ON THE DRIVE BACK TO MY RESIDENCE I NOTED A RATTLE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF MY VEHICLE WITH INCREASED SPEED OR WHEN DRIVING OVER BUMPS. WHEN I RETURNED TO MY RESIDENCE I OPENED THE HOOD TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS CAUSING THE RATTLE. I NOTICED NONE OF THE UPPER GRILL BOLTS WERE INSTALLED AND THE GRILL WAS LOOSE. I THEN INSPECTED THE LOWER SKID PLATE OF THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED IT WAS LOOSE AND UNFASTENED AS WELL. I THEN INSPECTED THE COOLING FAN BLADES AND FOUND THEY HAD NOT BEEN REPLACED AS DIRECTED BY THE RECALL OR AS STATED ON THE REPAIR ORDER. I HAVE ATTACHED A COPY OF THE REPAIR ORDER AND PICTURES OF THE UNREPAIRED VEHICLE. I HAVE OPENED A CASE WITH DAIMLER CHRYSLER, CASE #28814838. I DID RETURN BACK TO LARSON DODGE 2/26/2016 AND REQUESTED THE HARDWARE BACK TO FASTEN MY GRILL AND SKID PLATE. THE SERVICE MANAGER AND SHOP FOREMAN INSPECTED MY VEHICLE AT THAT TIME. THEY INSPECTED, DETERMINED, AND ADMITTED THE RECALL WAS NOT PREFORMED. I INFORMED THEM I WOULD BE RETURNING HOME AND CONTACTING THE VEHICLES MANUFACTURER.

AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE BLADES ATTACHED TO THE MOTOR FAN FRACTURED INTO PIECES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING THE FAILURE IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 06V199000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. WHILE STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT, THE CONTACT NOTICED A LARGE AMOUNT OF WHITE SMOKE EMITTING FROM THE TAIL PIPE. THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE READING INCREASED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WHO STATED THAT THE HYDRAULIC FAN MODULE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. ADDITIONALLY, THE HEAT WOULD NOT ACTIVATE. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE BLEND DOOR WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE BLEND DOOR WAS REPLACED BUT FAILED A SECOND TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND THEY STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALL. FOR THE PAST YEAR MY 2001 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO LIMITED HAS BEEN OVERHEATING IF WE IDLE FOR MORE THAN 1-2 MINUTES. AS LONG AS THE RPMS DON'T GO OVER 2000 IT WILL HAPPEN. I WENT ON A TRIP LAST MAY UP A CANYON. DROVE ABOUT 50 MILES TO THE CANYON AND ALL WAS FINE. WHILE GOING UP THE CANYON SPEEDS STAYED BELOW 20 MPH BECAUSE WE WERE FOLLOWING MY IN-LAWS AND THERE WAS QUITE A BIT OF DUST THE AC WAS OFF I DIDN'T NOTICE THAT THE TEMPERATURE GAGE WAS RAISING. WHEN I NOTICED IT, I GUESS IT WAS TOO LATE. I STOPPED THE JEEP AND HOPED THAT IT WOULD COOL DOWN. AS I LIFTED THE HOOD. THE TOP POPPED OF THE COOLANT RESERVOIR AND SPRAYED COOLANT EVERYWHERE. I WAS ABLE TO GET HOME WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM BECAUSE I WAS GOING FAST AGAIN. I PUT MORE COOLANT IN IT AND IT STILL OVERHEATS AT DRIVE-THRU'S AND IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. I HAVE TO TURN IT OFF. IN FACT WHEN I GOT IT REGISTERED THEY LEFT THE JEEP RUNNING AND THE COOLING SYSTEM RESERVOIR TOP POPPED OFF THEN. THEY TOLD ME TO BE CAREFUL AND ADD COOLANT ASAP. I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME, BUT LOOKING AND ALL THE OTHER PROBLEMS I REALIZE THAT THIS IS SERIOUS. THE ELECTRICAL IS ALSO SHODDY. I THINKS IT'S BECAUSE THE COOLANT HAS LEAKED ALL OVER THE WIRES. MY MAIN COMPLAINT IS THE COOLING THOUGH. YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT YOUR CAR OVERHEATING IN SLOW//STOPPED TRAFFIC. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT HE FAN RELAY MODULE HAD FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 128,970 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

CAR STARTED TO RUN REALLY BAD THEN WHEN I TRIED TO CRANK IT BACKUP IT RAN FOR A FEW MINUTES AND DIED. I NOTICED GAS THEN FLAMES COMING FROM EXHAUST PIPE. IT WILL RUN FOR FEW MINUTES BUT REALLY BAD , THEN IT WILL DIE. IT WANT CRANK IMMEDIATELY AFTER IT DIES YOU HAVE TO WAIT A WHILE BEFORE IT WILL CRANK AGAIN. I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEMS ARE TO CORRECT THEM. *TR
COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO SUDDENLY LOOSE ALL POWER. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, THE PISTON SKIRT HAD CRACKED AND EVENTUALLY BROKE AWAY CAUSING A COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE ENGINE. RESOLUTION WAS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE JEEP 4.0 ENGINE AFTER THE PISTON WAS REDESIGNED AROUND 2000-2001. JEEP SHOULD HAVE RECALLED THE VEHICLES AND REPLACED THE PISTONS BEFORE THEY STARTED CRACKING AND CAUSING ENGINE FAILURES. *TR UPDATED 05/29/13*LJ
THE HEAD CRACKING ISSUE SEEMS TO BE THE RESULT OF SEVERAL BAD CASTINGS AND I CAN ONLY SPECULATE THAT THE CAST IRON USED IN ONE LARGE BATCH MADE AROUND THE YEAR 2000 MUST HAVE BEEN OF POOR QUALITY. THE AREA BETWEEN THE NO.3 AND 4 EXHAUST PORTS IS THE HOTTEST PART OF THE HEAD AND IS SUBJECTED TO THE LARGEST TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS, MAKING THAT THE AREA MOST PRONE TO CRACK. THE FIRST SIGN OF A PROBLEM IS UNEXPLAINED LOSS OF COOLANT. IF THERE ARE NO EXTERNAL COOLANT LEAKS, REMOVE THE OIL FILLER CAP AND LOOK BETWEEN THE VALVE SPRINGS OF THE NO.3 AND 4 CYLINDERS.

ENGINE REPEATEDLY OVERHEATS, REPAIRS ARE VERY COSTLY FOR PROBLEM NOT GETTING FIXED. *TR
THE CAR OVERHEATED AND YOU CAN HEAR THE BOILED COOLANT FLUSHING BACK INTO THE RESERVOIR AND POURING OUT THROUGH THE DRAIN. THIS I FOUND OUT WAS CAUSED DUE TO THE MALFUNCTIONING OR RATHER ELECTRICAL SHORTING OF THE ECM (ENGINE CONTROL MODULE) LOCATED IN THE HOOD NEAR THE FIREWALL BEHIND THE COOLANT RESERVOIR. THIS CAUSES A FAILURE IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SO THE FAN THAT IS SUPPOSED TO KICK ON WHEN YOU TURN ON THE AIR FAILS TO START. I ALSO RECENTLY REPLACED MY INLINE-6 DUE TO A CRACK IN THE ENGINE BLOCK CAUSING THE COOLANT TO FLOW AND MIX WITH THE OIL THEREFORE, RESULTING IN LOW LEVELS OR COOLANT IN THE RESERVE AND THE RADIATOR. IT ALSO CAUSES THE OIL LEVEL TO INCREASE DRASTICALLY. *TR

THIS IS THE SECOND TIME HE IS LOOKING AT IT. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR APPROXIMATELY THREE MONTHS. WHAT REALLY CONCERNS ME THOUGH IS THAT IT IS JUST SHUTTING OFF WHILE I AM DRIVING. THIS DEFECT MAY CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT WHILE I AM IN TRAFFIC. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE IT CAUSE IT IS HAPPENING EVERYTIME I DRIVE IT NOW. I DID FIND OUT ON THE INTERNET THAT THERE ARE OTHER COMPLAINTS OUT THERE AND THAT THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE THE FRONT CONTROL MODULE. I HAVE CALLED CHRYSLER TO FIND OUT IF THAT IS REALLY THE PROBLEM. CURRENT FIX IS EITHER (A) PART FROM SUPPLIER OTHER THAN JEEP WHICH FAILS EVERY 6-9 MONTHS OR (B) JEEP RECOMMENDED PART WHICH REDUCED AIR VOLUME SO DRAMATICALLY THAT DEFROSTING WINDOWS IS UNSAFE. FAILURE OF THE BLOWER MOTOR IS ALSO UNSAFE DUE TO THE INABILITY TO DEFROST THE WINDOWS. *TR
HEAT ONLY WORKS ON DRIVER SIDE. COLD AIR FROM PASSENGER SIDE. MY MECHANIC THE A/C BLEND DOOR IS PROBABLY STUCK. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THEY WOULD HAVE TO PULL THE DASH TO FIX THE PROBLEM. A YEAR AGO THE HEATER CORE WAS REPLACED REQUIRING THE NEED TO PULL THE DASH. THE LABOR FOR THAT ALONE WAS $900. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT BOTH OF THESE PROBLEMS HAVE SERVICE BULLETINS ISSUED FOR THE JEEP & THE DODGE DURANGO. I BELIEVE THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COSTS. THESE ARE SO COMMON, THAT THE PARTS NEEDED TO FIX THE BLEND DOOR ARE NOT EVEN AVAILABLE. WITH THE BELOW 0 TEMPERATURES WE ARE HAVING THIS WINTER I CAN'T GO VERY FAR WITHOUT FREEZING! *TR
