NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.

Emergency Light stating "Service Electronic Throttle Control " that caused Engine Light to come on. These Electronic warnings cause vehicle to go limp and unable to drive or move causing severe danger on the road when vehicle just shuts down. It is a software issue and requires software flush and update, this issue is so common, dealership knew what i was going to say before I even said it. Recall needed to prevent a wreck and fix before issue shuts down vehicle, and should be recalled to prevent owner's financial repair for a software glitch needing updated by car maker.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 20V699000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the contact was informed by the local dealer and manufacturer that the recall repair would not be performed on the vehicle due to a faulty engine. No further information was provided. The contact indicated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
Headrest safety feature deployed randomly.
I drove 3 miles to work and pulled into parking spot turned car off went to get out of car and noticed I was over the line started car back up and put it in reverse went to back up and it jumped into park tried it again went back a little and it jumped back into park so I tried putting it in drive and it jumped back into park then I was stuck in the middle of the road and not able to move back In the space I got it in reverse and it would go a little bit and back in to park now it is towed to dealership and they can’t find the problem
The vehicle reported a low battery followed by numerous other warnings in sequence and then within a few seconds stalled and would not restart. Upon taking the vehicle to the garage, the alternator (and consequently battery) needed to be replaced. Reading other Jeep Grand Cherokee recalls, to me the indecent sounds exactly like the NHTSA Campaign ID: 14V634000 - where ''the alternator fails and the vehicle may stall'. (Manufacturer Campaign Number: T36)
The active head restraint on the passenger on the passenger side deployed without any collision. We came out one morning to just find this popped open and it will not reset. It has to go to the dealer for repair (scheduled 6/23) but could have caused serious injury if it deployed while someone was sitting in the seat.
Fuel pump failed. Electric control module/system failed. I have been having these problems since 2021. When it first started my car stalled out, completely died, and started rolling (even though I was pressing the brakes) - I had to pull my E brake and luckily stopped an inch away from hitting the car in front of me coming to a stop because the light turned red. My entire car shut down. I had to get a tow. I took it in to a shop and they had no idea really what happened or what it was. They told me a bunch of stuff was bad (thousands and thousands of dollars worth of stuff) and I ended up only getting whatever was absolutely necessary which was the fuel pump and battery. $1300 later it was driving at least. Ever since then my gas gauge has NEVER been accurate and just goes up and down randomly. I have to track my gas by resetting the miles of my “total trip” when I fill up. My dashboard constantly went on and off and I never knew what was accurate and what wasn’t. About 6 months ago my dashboard went completely black and hasn’t came on since. My car is now barley taking over 4 gallons of gas at a time before the auto stop on the pump cuts off. If I try refilling anyways gas overflows. This makes absolutely no sense. I can’t see how fast im going, hear my blinkers go on and off, see how much gas I have, how many miles are on my car, any check engine lights, and now I can’t drive over 75 miles without having to “fill up” my measly 4 gallons again before the pump shuts off. I was never notified of any recalls but there is absolutely no way my car is excluded from them. The electronic control module is fried, I can’t even get gas, and a brand new battery and fuel pump was clearly just a miniature band aid on this disaster chain of problems. I’ve only had this Jeep for like 5 years too and what it’s worth is not even worth a fourth of the cost it would be to fix all of this.
Front passenger side seat belt won't retract. The seat belt can be pushed by hand back into the upper slot, but after pulling out the belt again, it won't retract again. Believe this is a problem with the upper plastic guide pinching the belt. I have not taken to a dealer since there are numerous identical reports for this vehicle type and I don't want to pay $600 to fix. This is a huge safety issue since there can be slack in the belt for the front passenger.
Steering rack and Pinion failure due to leaking fluid. Dealer will not cover cost. This shouldn't happen to a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee with only 62k. Please investigate and place a recall for this design error. Very dangerous for all drivers and conditions. I am afraid to drive this car now. I am currently driving another car.
When vehicle has not been sitting overnight or a long period, the initial start does not engage. My mechanic referred to it as a long cold start. To work around this I will push the start button with my foot off the break pedal and let vehicle cycle through whatever. I can then start as normal. Using the key fob the startup happens cleanly. My mechanic said there is a complicated TSB on this issue but I am unable to locate. They have verified it’s not a fuel pressure issue.
I currently own 2 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees that suffer from this issue, and found numerous complaints online regarding this dash board delamination issue. Back in 2020 we received a letter indicating that the dash was part of the X81 campaign to send in proof of repair to be reimbursed by the program, however, since we did not know we needed to take it in for this, the form was never completed as the repairs were never done. (this repair is over 2000$ of which we do not have due to covid and the shut down of my wife job) Then I purchased another 2014 in which the dash was in way worse shape. I was under the impression that due to the previous letter that the repair should be covered under the X81. however, the dealer has informed me that the extension was only good for 6 months. On top of that, the parts are taking up to 1-2 years to receive. Also, if I had owned my SRT Jeep back when this campaign was done, given the current condition, I would have had the repair done or had ordered the parts for it. It is my thoughts that this dash, being as common as this is, should be covered due to me not owning the vehicle and the paperwork not being clear about the process could be completed by the dealer at no charge. To me it looked like I had to pay it, and would be reimbursed. I asked if they would be willing to sell me the part at a discounted rate, but the warranty department said there is nothing I could do. To me, this dash issue causes a driving distraction as the dash is in such poor shape, at least with my SRT, that i find myself looking at it, instead of the road.
May 3,2021 while driving on Route 93 south I drove over a rough patch on the road as soon as I felt the bump in the road I heard a very loud pop. I pulled into a gas station and inspected my car that's when I discovered the passenger headrest deployed, fortunatley I was alone at the time. No one was hurt.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the rear license plate light failed to illuminate the license plate. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The mechanic informed the contact that the wiring harness had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 103,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at 30 mph, the front passenger’s side active headrest restraint fractured and detached, hitting the contact's wife on the head. There was no impact to the vehicle that could have caused the active headrest restraint to become detached. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 68,013.
The headrest of the passenger seat popped out (like an explosion). I understand there are several investigations and was wondering if this is something that the company will replace for free?
The glow plugs are “stuck” and have broken by the service department when trying to remove due to the carbon build up in the cylinder head. The dealerships states because this car is a diesel it needs to be driven and gotten to temperature. I commute a short drive to work. This is a safety issue as I could be stranded. The service manager says he will have my car for over 6 weeks!!!
My jeep has developed the 3.6L Penastar tick. I noticed FCA extended the warranties for vehicles equipped with the 3.6L Penastar V6 but for my model they stopped in 2013. How can I get my year added to that warranty since it developed the same problems as the previous years. We had our jeep at a local dealer in Wasilla Ak for a tune up before our long trip and he didn't mention anything to us even though the tick was noticeable. I then had my vehicle state safety inspection completed (Texas) in 1st week of June and the mechanic told me about it and after some research, my jeep has the same tick coming from the engine.
While driving home all of a sudden there was a loud pop and instantly hit in the back of the head WHILE driving. Instant headache and throbbing to the back of my skull. I pulled over as soon as I could to see that my driver side headrest had deployed. Further inspection it appears the plastic inside the head rest is broken so it can not be reset. This is an extreme safety issue! Just driving down the same road we've driven on multiple times to be hit in the back of the head while driving. If my wife was driving I am not sure how that would have turned out as she already has neck issues. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AS THE COST IS TOO HIGH. THE CONSUMER STILL DRIVES THE VEHICLE.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while at a standstill, the vehicle was leaking oil. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed and repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure however, offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 112,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that when the vehicle was turned off, the electrical settings reverted to the default setting. After restarting the vehicle, the settings failed to switch back to the preferred settings. Additionally, the rear hatch failed to stay in the upwards position. The contact stated that while attempting to raise the hatchback to the upward position, the hatch would slam down instead. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.
Active head rest on driver side released while in parking lot. There was no contact or accident. There is a plastic piece inside the head rest that snapped and the head rest launched forward. I need to bring it to dealer to get fixed I suppose and also pay for it I believe, but this seems to be a safety issue and a defect - not something I should have to pay for.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, PASSENGER SIDE HEADREST RANDOMLY EXPLODED OPEN WITH GREAT FORCE AND A LOUD BANG, HITTING THE PASSENGER ON THE BACK OF THE HEAD. THERE WAS NO REASON FOR THE HEADREST TO DO THIS, AND MY PASSENGER WAS INJURED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITH SEVERAL UNKNOWN WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS STARTING HOWEVER, THE ENGINE WAS NOT RUNNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE AND THEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE TONE WHEEL AND CRANK SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. BENNETT CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM (1491 GA-40, KINGSLAND, GA 31548) WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V475000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT YET REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND CONFIRMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 122,000.
The exhaust fuel pump filter gets full every week and it has to run regeneration. This seems to happen too often and can be stressful as you gave to make sure to drive it at high speeds until it is complete
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed on the highway, the instrument cluster became inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was informed by the dealer that they could not diagnose the failure due to the instrument cluster not turning on. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall, and the vehicle was out of warranty coverage. The failure mileage was 94,000.
THE ACTIVE HEADREST ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE JEEP FIRED OFF WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT.
THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT IS NOT RETRACTING. WILL NOT RETRACT REGARDLESS OF STATIONARY OR IN MOTION. THE UPPER PORTION OF THE SEAT BELT WILL NOT RETRACT OR HOLD IN PLACE TO PROTECT.
THE STEERING SHAFT SPLINE STRIPPED. STEERING WHEEL TURNS FREELY IN BOTH DIRECTIONS WITHOUT MOVING THE FRONT WHEELS. HAPPENED BACKING OUT OF IN DRIVEWAY THANKFULLY INSTEAD OF THE INTERSTATE WE WERE HEADING FOR. THE CAR IS AS OEM AS CAN BE AND NO MODIFICATION OR OFF-ROAD DRIVING HAS BEEN DONE. THE PRIMARY DRIVER GOES TO/FROM SCHOOL AND STORE. THIS TYPE OF FAILURE SHOULD NEVER OCCUR, THE CONSEQUENCES OF THIS FAILING STEERING COLUMN ARE DEADLY.
DRIVER SEAT BELT IS NOT RETRACTING AND IT APPEARS THE PLASTIC GUIDE IN THE A-PILLAR IS CREAKED. I AM CONCERNED THE INTEGRITY OF THE SEAT BELT RESTRAINT SYSTEM IS COMPROMISED DUE TO FAULTY PLASTIC TENSION GUIDE. I NOTICED THE CRACK AFTER EXITING THE JEEP AS THE SEAT BELT WOULD NOT RETRACT.
WE WERE IN A CHURCH PARKING LOT, SUNDAY MORNING AT ABOUT 10AM. OUTSIDE TEMP WAS 65 DEGREES. VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. MY WIFE GOT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AND THE HEADREST POPPED OUT AND STRUCK HER IN THE BACK OF HER HEAD. SHE LATER DEVELOPED A HEADACHE AND GENERAL DIZZINESS. WE STAYED IN THE REST OF THE DAY SO SHE COULD LAY DOWN. NOT SURE IF A TELESCOPING HEADREST WAS A FEATURE, I DID A WEB SEARCH TO SEE WHAT THE ISSUE WAS. I READ ABOUT THE 'EXPLODING HEADREST', A TERM THAT DESCRIBES WHAT IT WAS LIKE. LOOKING AT THE INSIDE OF THE HEADREST, I CAN SEE THE BROKEN PLASTIC TABS THAT WERE DESCRIBED BY OTHERS. I ASSUMED THIS WOULD BE A RECALL ITEM, BUT WAS DISAPPOINTED TO LEARN IT WAS NOT. AFTER CALLING THE DEALER, WE WERE GIVEN AN ESTIMATE OF $850 TO REPLACE IT. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A BAD DESIGN AND SHOULD BE REPLACED AS A RECALL FIX. WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY NOW SO WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT EXTENDED.
A serious safety problem when fill the SUV with gas that can cause a fire with the SUV & the filling station. Gas just flows out of the filling port before the nozzle shuts off. This has happen 3 times at different stations. Taken it to the dealer. I’m not the only with this problem. A recall is needed!! Consumer stated vehicle was taken to the service dealer and was diagnosed as gas tank venting system which needs to be replaced at $1400. Manufacture has been notified. LEFT HEAD CYCLINDER IN ENGINE CRACKED WITH COOLANT LEAKING TO ENGINE. 2011-2013 WERE EXTENDED ON WARRANTY FOR THIS BUT NOT THE 2014 YET. TO FIX THE 1 ISSUE APPARENTLY REQUIRES REPLACING SEVERAL OTHER PARTS RESULTING IN A ASTRONOMICAL BILL. WHEN GOT BACK FROM GETTING CHECKED OUT THE ENGINE NOW MAKES A TICKING SOUND. ALSO GEAR SHIFT ISSUES WHERE THE CAR WILL SAY IN DESIRED GEAR AND WON'T GO INTO PARK AND STALL OUT. THE SECOND WAS A RECALL BUT MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. GEAR SHIFT ISSUE HAPPENS AT RANDOM AND HAS LEFT ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET.
DEAR NHTSA: I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED WHEN MY ENGINE DEVELOPED AN OIL LEAK AND THE CAUSE WAS DUE TO A KNOWN MFG'S DEFECT IN THE PLASTIC OIL FILTER ADAPTER & COOLER P/N 68105583-AF. THE DEALER (LANSDALE CHRYSLER JEEP, MONTGOMERYVILLE, PA) STATED THAT THIS PART SHOULD NEVER FAIL, IT'S A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE PLASTIC HOUSING DEVELOPING A CRACK, AND MANY THOUSANDS OF THESE PARTS ARE ON BACKORDER BECAUSE JEEP HAS CHANGED SUPPLIERS. IT DOESN'T HELP THAT THE PART IS MADE OF PLASTIC AND IT'S LOCATED UNDER THE INTAKE MANIFOLD RESULTING IN A BILL FOR $977 TO REPLACE IT. I WAS LUCKY AS THEY HAD A REPLACEMENT IN STOCK. I'VE CONTACTED JEEP SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT. FROM A SAFETY PERSPECTIVE, ENGINE DAMAGE COULD RESULT FROM A LOSS OF OIL AND A RISK OF FIRE IF THE LEAKING OIL CONTACTS A HOT SURFACE. MY VEHICLE HAS 86,325 MILES AND IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. JEEP SHOULD HAVE A REPLACEMENT CAMPAIGN OR RECALL DUE TO THE EXTREME NUMBER OF FAILURES. I HOPE YOU CAN HELP WITH GETTING JEEP TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THIS ISSUE.

OIL FILTER HOUSING CAUSED OIL TO LEAK OUT OF JEEP WITHOUT ANY WARING-PART IS ON 50,000 UNIT PLUS BACK ORDER YOU CANT GET THE PART THERE IS NO FIX
THE SEAT BELT, ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE, WILL NOT RETRACT. THE PLASTIC ABOVE WHERE IT RETRACTS IS CRACKED AND PRESSING DOWN ON THE BELT. I DISCOVERED THIS WHEN GETTING IN TO MY CAR AND TRYING TO PUT ON THE SEAT BELT. I NOTICED THE DRIVERS SIDE SEAT BELT ALSO HAS A CRACK ABOVE IT. I REALIZED THIS WAS A COMMON ISSUE ON GRAND CHEROKEES IN 2014S WHEN LOOKING AT ONLINE FORUMS FOR A SOLUTION.
MY PASSENGER SIDE HEADREST JUST CAME APART ALL OF A SUDDEN MY CAR WAS PARKED IN MY PARKING SPOT AND I NOTICED IT. WAS NEVER INVOLVED IN ANY ACCIDENTS JUST OUT OF NOWHERE THIS HAPPENS
VEHICLE CRANKS, BUT DOES NOT START. VEHICLES ACTS LIKE IT DOES NOT HAVE GAS WHILE DRIVING. IT DOES NOT ACCELERATE OR DECELERATES WHILE DRIVING LIKE IT'S ABOUT TO STALL. ISSUES ARE SIMILAR TO THE 2013 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE RECALL.
