NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
the vehicle is beginning to choke when accelerating - loss of power is noticed. the engine light is on. This recall was issued in June of 2022. here we are almost a year later, and there are still no parts for repair?? Why?
Gear switching to Neutral while driving, stops abruptly, steering locks up, and the vehicle shuts down completely. In order to restart, the battery requires a jump. The battery is fairly new and shows good voltage. 05/29/2023 (UPDATE) The issue was corrected with the installation of a new battery. Although the battery (2.5 years old) was indicating good voltage levels during testing, it would dip below 9v while driving. As explained by the Jeep dealer mechanic, this was causing the vehicle to immediately shut down, lock steering, and abruptly halt. I believe it’s still a safety issue. If I had been on the freeway, it would have likely created a serious danger to anyone unable to stop, or maneuver, in time.
I have to keep replacing my engine oil housing filter. I do believe I was sold a faulty engine from Carvana after I was told it was inspected thoroughly. The car isn't even at 70,000 and I've had more repairs on it than I could imagine. The engine light keeps coming on and if I have to replace the entire engine that will be up to 10,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently shifted into neutral (N). There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure occurred on several occasions and at each occurrence, he waited approximately five minutes in order to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the transmission valve had failed and needed to be replaced. The part was replaced, however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the transmission had failed and needed to be replaced. The transmission was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 119,825.
My jeep has been at the dealership for a year prior to this. On February 21,2023 I gave them a list of a weird smell in my cabin, broken, and missing parts. I was sent an email on the ‘March 14, 2023 saying my jeep was fixed and ready I went in on March 17, 2023 to pick up my jeep, from what I could see the broken pieces were repaired. I got in proceeded to drive, after I went maybe 16 miles one way, I had to turn around, there was a weird smell in my cabin. My eyes, and nose started running and my head was feeling weird. I already have COPD. I found the service manager, he went out and got a technician, the tech stuck his head into the jeep and said it was antifreeze. I told him I don’t know what it is, but I feel weird. They proceeded to lift the hood and there was black smoke, the tech said the “PVC” hose was disconnected. I didn’t know what that was, I left the jeep there. I didn’t feel well throughout the weekend, went to my Dr. Monday March 20, 2023. I had a very bad headache, short of breath, nausea, just feeling really bad and run down. I was told it was possible carbon monoxide poisoning, especially since that PVC hose not connected would distribute exhaust into the cabin. I was then taken back to the emergency room on Sunday March 26, 2023, I couldn’t stop vomiting, stomach hurt so bad and headache. I reached out to the dealership, and informed them what happened. They never replied back. I need help please, I’m a disabled U.S. Air Force retired veteran with COPD and other medical conditions. This situation is unacceptable. I’ve tried to get a meeting with the owners, on several occasions. Since they had my engine taken apart and just sitting out back of their dealership for months. I want the engine replaced completely, or they can send my jeep to another dealership to make sure the engine is complete and fixed. This could have killed me!
The engine had smoke coming from under the hood, the technician said the PVC hose was disconnected. I had just picked my jeep up after a year of being at the dealership consecutively and got carbon monoxide poisoning, had to go to my doctor and the emergency room. https://www.jeepgarage.org/threads/2014-wk2-ecodiesel-occasional-smoke-from-under-or-engine-compartment.232597/
The Active Headrest Restraint (AHR) busted open with the broken clip issue and cannot be fixed without a dealership replacement. The car is available for inspection. This was not the result of an accident or collision, as the car was parked. If I were sitting in the seat, it most likely would have given me a concussion or a hospital visit. Since the AHR is supposed to reduce the occurrence of whiplash in the event of a collision, I am now at increased risk of whiplash if something were to happen. Multiple reports claim it has caused injury, and I am now worried for my passengers if their headrest was to also pop out. As of 2023, the NHTSA has received nearly 500 complaints of headrests bursting open, with at least 71 of them involving injury. The vehicle has not yet been inspected, but will need to be taken to a dealership and paid to be fixed since there is no recall at this time, and I expect a costly repair. There were no previous warnings or indications that this would happen. This is a dangerous situation, and I am scared to drive my car in fear of my headrest not working properly in the event of a FUTURE COLLISION, and am now scared the headrest on the passenger side will bust open and injure someone else. In a proposed class action lawsuit, "65-page complaint states the defect can be traced back to the failure of a “cheap plastic component” inside the AHRs that are unable to withstand the 75 pounds of constant pressure applied by the AHRs springs. The plaintiffs claim this 'cost-saving measure' puts the AHRs at risk of failure and vehicle occupants at risk of injury." Here is a link to a perfectly good summary of this issue. The article was published in 2020. https://thomasjhenrylaw.com/blog/nhtsa-investigates-headrests-bursting-open-in-dodge-jeep-chrysler-vehicles-71-injuries-reported/

Driver side head rest air bag deployed completely on its own while I was sitting at a red light. It slammed forward with such great force hitting me in the back of my head and caused a horrible headache. It is available for inspection. My safety is at risk everytime I get in my car due to the fact it is a safety feature put in place by Jeep to prevent whiplash or any type of head or neck injury. It has been confirmed by a Certified Jeep dealership that it is fact a safety feature that is now inoperable. There was no warning lights prior to and at this time no lights or messages have appeared.
Reluctor wheel / toner wheel is poorly designed and causes the vehicle to go into limp mode when part fails. Manufacture is already aware that the magnet strip can detach and chip as a recall has already been placed. HOWEVER, the fix was NOT to replace the part but update the software so vehicle would not stall. For some reason I was told my particle vehicle was not part of the recall for software update. When my toner wheel went bad it left me in an unsafe situation where I was turning onto a highway and with NO warning my vehicle went into limp mode with vehicles approaching at high speed. I was only able to get up to 15mph in limp mode almost causing a crash as I tried to move over to the shoulder. Limp mode is an UNSAFE practice especially with NO warnings. I would rather take my chances of wrecking additional parts on my vehicle than to have my vehicle go into limp mode on a highway which could lead to a serious crash. The recall 20V-475 should be to REPLACE the tone wheel completely and a recall should be done to prevent a vehicle from going into limp mode without any warnings.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the front driver’s and passenger’s side seat belt failed to retract as designed. No warning lights were illuminated. While stopped at a drive-through with my foot on my break, my head rest exploded, forcing my head forward. There was no accident and it deployed at random. The passive restraint system failed. Had vehicle been in motion it would’ve been a public safety risk. Appointment at the service center of the dealership has been made. It has not yet been inspected.
Have an oil leak in the in the oil filter housing. it bolts to the engine block and is a vital part to the security of the engine. its a possibility that the engine could catch fire. the component has been checked by a authorized jeep dealer and this is the cause of the oil leak. my extended warranty will not pay for the repair of this part. the dealer insisted i buy the extended warranty only to not have said repair covered.
I was drive on the highway
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while his wife was driving 70-75 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact’s wife was able to continue driving. There is an extended recall regarding the driver and passenger seatbelts in 2014-2015 Dodge Durangos and 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees, number D-21-04. My driver seatbelt retracts very slowly and the passenger seatbelt does not retract at all without manual manipulation. Because of this safety issue I brought my Jeep Grand Cherokee into a dealership in January 2023. At the time I was told parts (X90) were not available yet. I have since called monthly because my car at this point is unsafe to drive with passengers without a repair. Today (June 2023) I was told that there is an indefinite backorder and there is no estimated remedy for the part. The service technician from the dealership indicated that the part is likely not being manufactured anymore. He indicated that my only option was to either drive an unsafe vehicle, stop driving it, or sell it. I was informed that Chrysler would likely not be manufacturing a fix for another 6 months to one year.
The top of the Fuel Filler Tube - Mopar (68302344AB) is made of weak plastic. While fueling the vehicle, the capless portion of the part above broke and a small amount of fuel spilt. Now the car is difficult to fuel and the fuel tank is exposed due to the lack of the fuel capping mechanism.
It keeps saying service gear shifter
Driver side seatbelt won’t retract. I’ve cleaned the seatbelt thoroughly and still won’t retract. Vehicle has only 77k miles.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Fuel pump relay has failed. It is internal and soldered onto the tipm board under the fuse block. This is a well known issue and a cheap fix on 2011 - 2013 models of jeep grand cherokees. The fix was to wire in an external bypass relay. My only option at this point is to replace the tipm board which is quite expensive, hundreds of dollars, for a $8 failed relay....terrible design. Thankfully I wasnt traveling 70 mph on the expressway when the failure occurred, (stall/lose power). Please extend this recall thru the 2015 models
My 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee started to leak oil slowly. We started to smell a burning scent when accelerating. This problem has slowly happened for a while before an oil light showed up on the dash. We took it to the mechanic & had an diagnostic test done. It was confirmed that our oil filter housing was leaking. This issue could have destroyed our engine. While pricing this repair, we've contacted several mechanics and all have stated that this oil filter housing is a major issue for Mopar (Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, Fiat). The parts are sold out of Auto Zone, NAPA, Advanced Auto Parts and can only be purchased on the Mopar site or Amazon. The issue with the part is that it's plastic which dries, cracks & can be easily warped. Dorman has made an aluminum replacement which is hard to come by due to the amount of people that are constantly having to repair this part. The oil filter housing was poorly constructed/designed. This is a major malfunction that could completely ruin a vehicle. There are several YouTube videos, blogs and articles discussing this issue. This should've been recalled voluntarily but I'd like to know that I won't have to replace this part again on my dime in the future when a faulty designed item was placed into my car which is a large investment.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that after parking the vehicle, he noticed transmission fluid leaking underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the oil coolant to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.
Safety recall does not have parts available to fix. Vehicle may stop running unexpectedly. My car stopped running in December and has fragments of the engine. I’m not sure if it is related to this recall or not. My car’s engine is being replaced right now by the dealer, under warranty, but I cannot trade it in for what it is worth because of this outstanding safety recall.
In reference to recall W79/20V-699, to date I have attempted on four (4) occasions to have the recall addressed by my dealership, Gettel Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Punta Gorda, Florida without success. I have even contacted corporate about the problem to no avail. Is there anything you can do to force them to follow through on the recall repair?
While stopped at a Stop sign, the passenger side headrest restraint was deployed while my wife was seated. The headrest made a loud noise and did contact her head, but she was not harmed. If this were to happen on the driver's side, especially while moving, the result could be catastrophic.
*NHTSA Please Help* I purchased my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee brand new in June 2014 from a FCA authorized dealership. I have meticulously maintained, gently driven, and greatly cared for this Jeep since day one. Have only ever had the Jeep serviced at the FCA authorized dealership where I purchased. I have followed and complied with all Jeep manufacturer service recommendations since day one. At 115,000 miles, I am currently experiencing a loud ticking noise resulting from failed rocker arms and failed lifters. These failed rocker arms and lifters will result in complete and catastrophic engine failure. I am also experiencing significant engine oil leaking coming from a failed oil cooler. The Mopar oil cooler in this 3.6 Pentastar engine is made of plastic, and is highly susceptible to failure. I have talked to multiple ASE Certified Mechanics that both issues I am currently experiencing are extremely common amongst these 3.6 Liter Pentastar V6 24 Valve VVT engines. I feel very unsafe as the owner and operator of this Jeep Grand Cherokee, and have lost all confidence as it relates to the safety and reliability of this vehicle. If the vehicle cannot provide reliable and safe transportation, that completely eliminates all safety as a driver and for all passengers of this vehicle. *NHTSA* Please help the owners of the vehicles with these engines with appropriate recalls and procedures to ensure the safety of our vehicles. Thank you.
What component: The piece of plastic trim that helps guide the seatbelt into the wall of the car has cracked and is preventing the seatbelt from retracting. Safety Risk: This prevents the seatbelt from retracting while driving the car (if it becomes loose it stays loose and therefore doesn't restrain the driver.) Inspection: The dealer said this is not covered under warranty or recall. (I called and described the problem to them.) This just started suddenly with no warning. My car has about 110,000 miles and this happened recently.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at 35-40 MPH, the message "Low Volt" was displayed. Additionally, the contact stated that he heard an abnormal squealing sound coming from the hood and he noticed a burning rubber odor. The contact was able to drive to his nearby residence where he noticed smoke coming out from underneath the hood. The contact stated upon opening the hood, he noticed smoke and flames coming out of the alternator. The contact was able to extinguish the fire with the water hose. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic the next morning. The independent mechanic diagnosed that the alternator experienced a short circuit. The independent mechanic related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V435000 (Electrical System). The dealer was contacted and informed the contact that they could not repair the vehicle under the recall as the VIN was not included. The independent mechanic replaced the alternator and the battery. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but advised the dealer and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 145,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the front passenger's side active head rest restraint had deployed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the front passenger's side active head rest restraint had deployed. The contact was informed that the front passenger's side active head rest restraint needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that the warranty had expired, and the repair would not be covered under warranty. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.
Jeep placed in park on slight incline and turned off. 5 minutes later seen rolling down driveway (seen on video).
I was driving and pressed on the gas to go and my car shifted into neutral and wouldn't let me go. I almost got hit by a truck due to this. Luckily he swerved to avoid me. Also my seat belt pulls out but won't retract on passenger side door.
The car just stalled in the middle of the road on a busy street with the information 4wd drive temporarily unavailable till service. There was no prior warning, the car has around 80K miles and has been taken care of regularly with no outsanding calls or other maintenance. Checking the resources available, the reliability on this car seems pretty low with many know transmission issues. I had the car towed to the dealer and they are wanting to fix 1. valve body and connector to pan, 2. dtcm and broken engine and trans mount. A few weeks back the drivers side seat belt stopped retracting (the dealer said they would fix that). The car just stalling with no prior notification or issues added to which the car belt retracting happened on a busy street and very well could have happened in the freeway causing safety and security issues for this and other vehicles on the road. There are innumerable cases of transmissions reports and issues for this vehicle, most of those fixed earlier on during the warranty might just seemed to happened a little bit later. It is a disaster waiting to happen with other vehicle owners if not addressed proactively in my humble opinion, I was relatively lucky to have happened without an incident but it could have been worse. Please need your help in addressing this safety issue asap.

While driving normally, the passenger headrest violently shot open. Plastic clips which once held a metal rod inside the headrest can be seen stressed and broken, causing the active head restraint (AHR) systems to deploy. Several independent websites and forums show this is a known issue but there has not been a recall. There were no warning signs of an issue until this point.
The Seat Belt would not retract, and it also would not tighten around the chest area of passengers. The belt would just lay on your lap. It was a safety hazard because if there would have been into a accident, it would not have prevented the passenger from going through the windshield.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact received notification NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not available.
