NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2016 Jeep Renegade. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
You cannot correctly install this car seat with the provided tethers. The loosen/tighten latch that holds the belt stops functioning the second there is any tension. You can not pull the strap through to get it tight enough to hold the seat in place with the base tether or the anchor tether that goes over the seat back. There is always at least 6 inches of slack and you cannot tighten any tighter to get the seat positioned with no movement. Even the firemen at the fire dept could not install this seat safely or get it tightened past a specific point. They advised me to make this report.
My customer satisfaction number is W20. I have been waiting since December 2022 to get the catalytic converter replaced. I was told there were 2 people ahead of me. Everytime I called I was told they were still trying to reach the people. They did update the software but now my Jeep is sluggish. I have to force the gas pedal to force the accelerator to the floor to pick up speed. So my gas mileage is very bad. I hope the engine does not go waiting so long to get a defective part replaced. I am in Arkansas now and will be until my Mom gets out of the hospital. I want to get my Jeep fixed now. I am close to Batesville and Jonesboro Arkansas. Please tell me where I can take my Jeep to get it repaired or do I take the recall card to any Jeep dealer. I feel I have waited long enough.
While running some errands, I put my left turn signal on to change lanes, and I immediately got a dashboard indication that the rear turn signal lamp was out. Curiously enough, I also had a running light out, back up light out, and brake light out indication. I went to a local parts store and purchased two correct bulbs and upon returning home, I replaced them. Didn't fix the problem. After some though, I googled 2016 Jeep Renegade tail light issues and sure enough I got several hits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2p-cHXBEAs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhEzVL0Bcns https://www.carproblemzoo.com/jeep/renegade/tail-light-switch-problems.php I went back and looked at the connector to my tail light, and it was in fact burnt (no corrosion) on both the tail light assembly and the mating connector. (I did not take pictures of my connectors because it looks just like the ones in the videos) After the dealer service associate claimed ignorance of the issue and said they would have to replace the whole tail light assembly, and the wiring harness at my cost since the car is out of warranty, I chose to fix the problem myself and it now it works fine. I see this as a known safety issue and genuinely believe Jeep Inc. should recall all 2016 (and perhaps other years as well) and fix this problem at there cost.
Stopped at a red light stepped on gas to go on the green and car had shut off. Two or three tries later the car restarted. Scary with traffic coming from behind . This is the third time this has happened.
In October 3 different incidents while driving my car went into netural by itself took car back to dealership each time each time it was not resolved The last incident I also was hit by a semi on the freeway with my 11year old child in the car at 5am took car back to dealership they have had my car since Oct Now being told it's the shifter To me this should be a recall being told by dealership and other mechanics this is an on going issue with this make and model This is huge safety hazard Unfortunately this part is on back order so I am out of a vehicle that I am still paying for since Oct Worst experience and concerned for others and their safety
The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Renegade. The contact stated that she had received a manufacturer recall notice, Recall Number: V54 - Engine Cooling Fan (Engine and Engine Cooling). The contact stated that the dealer determined that the cooling fan was working as designed and the fan was not replaced. The contact stated while driving at 30 MPH and various speeds, and while stopped at a traffic light, the engine would overheat. The contact stated that the temperature gauge indicated that the engine was hot. The contact stated that the failure had become a recurring failure. The contact had the vehicle towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine cooling fan needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 117,143.
I started up my Renegade as usual and when I got to the stop sign at the end of my street, I had a message on the screen telling me to press the break and push the start button. I never turned my car off. No check engine lights before or after this incident.
The vehicle just stalls out with no warning. Just shuts off. After a few attempts the car restarted however stalled out again.
This has occurred ever since I’ve bought my car, and not every time. When car is at a slight incline and at a stop, it will not accelerate. Gas cap broke off for no reason. Dealership rep said that’s happened to someone else too. Chip for airbag sensors are not available.
Since I drive the Jeep off the lot 1/20/2017 with 9 miles on the vehicle I got home and saw that the passenger side daylight running light was not functioning. I called the sales rep and he informed me to bring in the vehicle to find out what was wrong. During the next six years of ownership, I have consistently had the same issue with the running light bulb being burnt out and the two messages of daylight running light out and parking light out. On 9/22/20 with 19,437 miles on the vehicle I paid $34.69 to fix broken wires and have two new bulbs installed. Then on 6/30/22 with 27,236 I paid $33.92 to replace the passenger daytime running light and parking light. Then on 8/10/22 with 27,858 miles on the vehicle I paid $319.82 to have the passenger side daytime running light and parking light bulb and the tech also replaced the driver's side running light socket and bulb because driver's side running light because it was making a poor connection. I addition the vehicle was at the dealership for four days running an electrical diagnostic. I picked up the car and no messages existed. Ten days later I called the dealership and told my service rep that the two messages of the daylight running light and the parking. On 9/14/22 with 28,510 miles on vehicle I went in to see the service manager and the service tec to ask how they would resolve this ongoing light issue and was told that they would need to complete more diagnostic and that I was looking at four hours of diagnostics at a cost to me of $600. Since I was at the dealership, I had an oil change and was given a failure on the light evaluation because the passenger side daylight running light and parking light were out. I got home and started researching the 2016 Jeep Renegade and came across dozens of complaints regarding the same issue I was having of the daylight running light and parking light out. I replaced the factory bulb with a led bulb and after that change I am only getting one message of parking light out
The traction control light will come on and the engine will lose power while the vehicle is making a turn at normal low-speed turns on dry pavement. This poses a serious safety hazard for drivers because unexpected loss of acceleration in a turn places the driver in danger of being hit from behind and/or at risk of being struck from the side when traction control comes on and the vehicle loses power while the driver is making a turn across traffic. We purchased this vehicle used on June 1, 2022 and have had multiple incidents of this happening, most recently this morning at 6:55 AM CST. I have not yet had it looked at by a dealer.
Headlights keep going out. multiple repairs have been done by independent service center. No warning. They have been replaced 7 times and they just keep going out.
The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Renegade. The contact stated while parking the vehicle the contact noticed that the headlights were inoperable. The contact replaced the headlight bulbs; however, the headlights remained inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that water was entering the headlight housings which caused dame to the wiring. The contact was informed that the wiring needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle needed to be taken to the dealer to be repaired. The failure mileage was 85,000.
The lug nut wrench doesn’t fit the lug studs due to the shiny cap on each stud. I had to use a hammer to force the wrench on to the studs in order to remove them. I replaced all studs with aftermarket studs without any beauty cover allowing a 17 mm wrench to remove the studs.
I bought my jeep at the end of 2016. Within a year the back seat passenger side seatbelt would not latch. Now I’m 2022 the middle seatbelt also won’t latch. I have a five year old. I discovered this when attempting to move her to a booster seat. There is only one working seatbelt in the back. After reading forums this is a common problem with the limited jeep renegade. Children are at risk.
Ongoing Recall Issue – 2016 Jeep Renegade (Recall U90) This Recall came out 06/16/2022 when I connect the dealership they keep say its backorder and that they have no ETA on. Sometimes I do receive texts about the part being available but when I call, they say no and that it could be scammed when it clearly gives me the dealership info and phone number.
The wheel lug nuts are ballooned. This makes it impossible to remove the wheel without breaking the wheel stud. This is apparently a common problem with some Jeep models. I was told this on my last two visits for service at the Clovis, CA Jeep dealer. On both visits, they were unable to rotate the tires. On my last visit, 10/06/2022 (53,231 miles on the odometer), I ordered at my expense a full set of wheel studs (20) to solve the issue. The parts have still not arrived. This is my teenage daughters car. This is a safety defect because if she gets a flat tire they will not be able to change the tire. Jeep should have recalled all known vehicles that might have this issue and replaced the wheel studs a long time ago.
While at an intersection as I was turning left across the side of oncoming traffic my vehicle completely stalled in the middle of the road the gas pedal was stuck and would not accelerate and then a code on my dash appeared Service Throttle Body, after 45 seconds the code went away and the veh was finally able to accelerate so I could move out of the middle of the oncoming traffic side of the road. I then proceeded to go straight until I could find a parking lot to pull into. Right before I was able to pull into the parking lot the Jeep did the same thing again. Would not accelerate, I put on my flashers, the same dash code came back on Service Throttle Body and after 45 seconds the Jeep went back to acting fine. I was finally able to pull into a parking lot and turn off the jeep.
Oil consumption, electrical problems like lights flickering, fuel odor, brake light olways on
My 2016 Jeep Renegade is my only vehicle for myself and family. There's an open recall (U90) for a part that must be installed by a certified dealership. However, the necessary part is unavailable and has been back ordered for over one year. There are no dealerships in the entire state which have this part avallable. I've been on a waitlist for this part about a year as well. My car registration is due next month in May, which requires this recall to be repaired prior to registration. I also need a smog test, but the recall involves emissions so my smog test is likely to fail. I have contacted Jeep customer service but the representative has stopped responding completely. I have reached out 3 additional times to this representative assigned to help me but have been ignored.
Fog light wiring issue front drivers side. Changed light. It happens to be in the wiring and I’ve heard other people have issues with this and it is a safety concern based on not being able to see or have people see you in the fog.
while driving, car comes to a complete stop and stalls when accelerating. dangerous during oncoming traffic whether it's the pedestrian or the cars surrounding me. car won't move instantly upon pressing on gas pedal-- it stalls for a bit before moving.
In April of 2020 and at 41,800 miles, my vehicle was experiencing very significant vibration and noise from my engine and had become unbearable. I learned, from taking the vehicle to the Dealer, that the Passenger Side Engine Mount was defective - leading to instability under the hood. The Dealer, 'off record' indicated there was a known defect and that they were replacing a fair amount of the mounts for those customers who recognized that there may be a problem. The Dealer wanted $600+ to replace the Engine Mount! I believed an item like that (part of the drivetrain system) should be replaced for free by the manufacturer. However, I purchased the Engine Mount (Part #6841 8168 AA -001) and Bolts and replaced the Mount myself. In addition, I contacted FCA and they reimbursed me for the $241.68 expense. Most unfortunately, again, at 55,231miles the replacement (FCA Part) Engine Mount FAILED - creating incredible vibration and noise!! Again, I purchased another replacement FCA Engine Mount, Bolts and installed the replacement Engine Mount myself. I have tried to reach-out to FCA utilizing the e-mail address that they communicated with me back in 04/2020, although FCA is not responding. This issue, that of a potentially factory defective Primary Engine Mount design, can be a very significant issue as it supports and/or impacts the Drive Train System. The question must be asked, what could happen with the vehicle for those drivers who do not recognize an ever (but slowly) increasing noise and vibration until it is too late?? I would respectfully request NHTSA consider a recall mandate for this item for which FCA should be required to re-design the part and offer free replacements.
The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Renegade. The contact stated that the rearview camera image was intermittently blue or blank while reversing. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The dealer determined that the infotainment system and the rearview camera needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a claim was filed; however, the claim was later denied. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
I have to keep disabling my traction control. I made a left turn onto a small back road and my traction control kicked on and the car accelerated causing me to almost wreck. Now I am having trouble getting the car to start. I practically have to stand on the brake to get it started. And all kinds of alerts pop up from time to time. Low tire pressure, emergency brake, bulbs out....etc.
Jeep lost acceleration and died in the middle of the road. Fortunately I had just gotten off the freeway or we could have been seriously injured. No warning or check engine lights illuminated, it just completely lost the acceleration and died in the road.
When car is backed up and put into drive the transmission hesitates. While coming to a stop the transmission has small jerks while downshifting. Also upon pulling out anytime you are stopped it looses power and then jumps forward. While driving as it changes gears it hesitates then switches and feels like I’m driving with someone learning how to drive a manual. This should not be happening around 67k miles. It’s going to cause a wreck.
Parking/Daylight continually goes out after repeated replacement of the bulb. I will have the vehicle available upon request. I have had it inspected by the dealer and third party services each and every time all they do is replace the bulb. It's only been 1 month since I last had the bulb replaced (But I've had it replaced 3 times this year). Additionally, I found a forum of people also complaining about their jeep renegades with the same exact issue: https://www.jeeprenegadeforum.com/threads/parking-light-daytime-running-lights-out.50874/ Seems to be a widespread problem stemming from faulty wiring from the manufacturer. Surprised there hasn't already been a recall.
there were no warnings on the vehicle to indicate a problem occurring. coming from a complete stop there is a delay in accelerating to speed - feels like a stall and the pedal is not receiving any gas... but the tank is full. dealership never found any issues nor were able to reproduce the same problem. this problem happens multiple times a year. this is dangerous for driving as i'm unable to get to full speed in traffic.
The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Renegade. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, the sunroof failed to close. The contact mentioned that the vehicle needed to be restarted a couple of times for the sunroof to close as needed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the rails were fractured, and the sunroof needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000. The VIN was not available.
UNKNOWN I was recently sold a vehicle that I feel should be under the "safe car" issues. The engine cooling fan. If an engine cooling fan is not working right, this can cause the engine to overheat and the potential exists for a vehicle fire. How is that not a safety issue? Two Manufacturer recalls on the Jeep Renegade 2016: #V54 2015-2017 VM BU FB ENGINE COOLING FAN #W20 2013-2019 Mutli Vehicle 2.4 Reprogram PCM PH1 I bought a car not realizing the signficance of these recalls which were not explained to me at the time of purchase. Neither recall repairs were done by the previous owner. I feel the engine cooling fan is a serious safety issue yet it is not listed on your website. This means other unsuspecting buyers can purchase cars without salespeople being required to disclose detailed recall information. Nor whether or not this recall was taken care of by the previous owner. In my case, it was not.
My seat warning light comes on. Took it to Dutch Miller Jeep in south Charleston, WV. I was informed that the seat built switch was defective. After checking the internet it seems this is a common occurrence on Jeep vehicles. This is expensive to repair and is a safety hazard per the repair technician.
while driving the door locks start activating (locking and unlocking) AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT KEEPS FLASHING BRAKE WARNING LIGHT COMES ON AND DISAPEARS SHIFTER FAILS TO ENGAGE WHEN IN DRIVE VEHICLE LOSES ALL POWER BUT WILL NOT SHUT DOWN ESP INDICATOR LIGHT COMES ON SHIFTER INDICATOR STARTS FLASHING EMERGENCY BRAKE WILL ENGAE WHILE DRIVING
WENT TO CHANGE THE REAR LEFT SIDE LIGHTS, (TAIL, TUNR SIGNAL AND BRAKE). Found that the circuit board holding the lights and the connector pin was burned. The connector pin was actually melted. Research this on-line and found that numerous complaints regarding these circuit boards and connectors have this same problem. Reached out to Jeep and no comments from them. The only place to find a replacement circuit board and connector is on E-bay. Cannot find it elsewhere.
Had this car since 2016,only 39,289miles,no problems whatsoever, and then I did this recall thing the 12th of July 2021,and today the 14th of July 2021 I have an engine light on,I have this horrible noise when I turn it on,I am so pissed and mad!!!really mad!!!Techs should not touch anything else than whats is called for to be fixed!!!i feel that when we take the cars they mess things out so we,the customers have to end up putting money since is free, they need customers to go back and spend on something that it didn’t needed it from the beginning!!!like I said 6yrs and not a problem, even have a multi point inspection sheet that it shows everything was great!!!i am scare to take back, because now I’m going to end up paying for their mistakes/fault/unprofessional work.I am so disappointed, upset, mad.I was planning to buy there again, but now I’m re thinking bout it!it won’t get fixed I know I will end up paying, but I want to make a complaint so that way at least it will pile with other people who end up having the same problems!why do Mechanics do that,or Techs do it!if is not broken, don’t fix it please. They should take an integrity test and not take advantage of the situation.
I have a problem with the radiator fan!it was fix last yr,was a recall also and now is giving me the engine light showing in the computer is something with the radiator fan!i took it to a place where they deal with Jeep brand and I don’t know why didn’t last longer if they fix it!!i need to know why do I have to pay when it was a recall?tomorrow I have the apt but I will end up paying for this problem when they should of just fix it the 1st time, right?since it was a recall, why do I have to pay?is only been a yr since they did this recall!radiator fan are suppose to last more than a yr,right?
On more than one occasion, this car has stalled or stopped, leaving me coasting to the side of the road in active traffic. I was going about 30-35 mph. It has had oil consumption problems since 2021 when I purchased it. It was presented to me at point of sale as gas consumption...it wasn't getting good mileage and would need a tune up. Also misrepresented as having a spare and it did not. On 4 Aug 2024 I completed the most recent oil consumption test and it failed. Leith Jeep refused to provide me with paperwork and said "no charge." But it needed another quart of oil which I added. Before the test was completed it needed a quart of oil. I have all records and will attach here if possible or email under separate emails. Not sure how many doc can be attached. I had recall repairs made. My car is part of the class action lawsuit but is unsafe. I am told to correct I need a new engine which will cost me out of pocket $11,000.00 due to no longer under warranty. But it has had this problem since I bought it and prior, an oil consumption test was done by the dealer in possession then.
After work I got in my renegade Trailhawk and turned it on as usual to go home. Upon starting up the vehicle, warning lights came on telling me the headlights, tail lights, blinkers, daytime lights, tag lights, parking lights and back up lights were not working or out. I got out and inspected them only to see they were in fact all still functioning as should be. I got someone from the dealership to look at the issue and was told it would be alright, but definitely get the service department to look at it in the morning. I am having it inspected today by the service department and hopefully the issue will be resolved.

As an update on this particular issue, I took the Renegade to the Service department the next morning and after just a few minutes I was informed this would be remedied within less than 15 -20 minutes. Apparently there was a new update to the system that was installed by the awesomely knowledgeable crew at Marshall CDJR and I haven’t had any of the same issues since.
The 'Service Engine' light came on and the vehicle overheated 400 miles from home. The servicing Jeep dealer (Vision Jeep in Rochester, NY) stated the engine cooling fan failed, in the same manner as noted in Recall Campaign v54 for the cooling fan in 2015-2017 Jeep Renegades. My car is a 2016 Renegade, and the service manager was surprised my VIN was not included in the recall. He stated it failed in the same way as other recall repairs they did for the same model car, and was the same part that failed. I firmly believe it was a mistake that my VIN wasn't included, despite the model and year of my car being in the range of the cars for recall v54.
THIS CAR COMES ALMOST TO A DEAD STOP AND STALLS WHEN ACCELERATING. ITS DANGEROUS BECAUSE IT WILL STALL RIGHT AS I'M ENTERING TRAFFIC AND ATTEMPTING TO GET UP TO THE SPEED OF TRAFFIC DURING A TIME WHEN ALL OTHER CARS AROUND ME ARE ALSO ACCELERATING, IT'S HAPPENED SINCE THE FIRST DAY I BOUGHT THE JEEP I'VE ALREADY FILED A COMPLAINT. THESE ENGINES SHOULD BE RECALLED.
REAR TAILIGHTS HAVE STOPPED WORKING. DIAGNOSTIC BY THE DEALERSHIP SHOWS THAT THE CONNECTORS IN MOTH REAR TAILLIGHTS HAVE MELTED. I GOT THE DASH ALERT WHEN I FIRST STARTED MY VEHICLE.
HAVING TO PUT OIL IN A MONTH AFTER AN OIL CHANGE. RENEGADE IS DRIVEN 40 HIGHWAY MILES A DAY 5 TIMES A WEEK. ALSO THE COOLANT LIGHT SHOOTS UP TO HOT SUDDENLY THEN BACK DOWN WHILE IDLING IN PARK.
THE MYSKY ROOF ON MY JEEP BROKE OFF AND FLOWN OFF AND ONTO THE HIGHWAY, THE LATCH ON THE INSIDE BROKE OFF INTO TINY PLASTIC PIECES CAUSING THE SUNROOF TO FLY UP AND OUT ONTO THE HIGHWAY. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION GOING 63 MPH AT THE TIME THE EVENT TOOK PLACE, ON A HIGHWAY.
UNKNOWN. System failed to warn me that a car was approaching on my blind spot and if I had the warning it could have prevented an accident. Had a warning been given allowing me to know not to cross the lane I would have been more aware of the car approaching my lane and then the automatic emergency braking system could’ve kicked in to prevent this accident from happening in the first place.
THE CAR ENGINE SHUTS DOWN UNEXPECTEDLY WHILE DRIVING. BOUGHT THE CAR FROM AUTONATION 3 MONTHS AGO. I NOTICED THE OIL LOW PRESSURE JUST STARTED TO COME WITH THE SHUTDOWN. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS IF DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS MODEL NEEDS TO BE RECALLED BECAUSE I FOUND HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR SITUATIONS ONLINE.
WHEN DRIVING, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. THEN THE SERVICE 4 WHEEL DRIVE LIGHT FLASHES AND I'M UNABLE TO USE MY 4 WHEEL DRIVE. MY CAR SHUTS OFF AT STOP SIGNS, ON ITS OWN AND THE AIR BAG LIGHTS COME ON. AFTER READING ABOUT THIS, IT SOUNDS LIKE IT'S A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THE RENEGADES. THIS IS SUPER DISAPPOINTING AND UNSAFE.
I HAVE A JEEP RENEGADE 2016 SPORT I HAVE BEEN HAVING THIS WEIRD ISSUE WITH IT WHERE IT HAS A NOTICE THAT SAYS SERVICE 4 WHEEL DRIVE THEN COMPLETELY SHUT THE CAR OFF WHILE DRIVING I HAVE LOOKED UP THIS ISSUE AND IT SEEMS OTHER JEEP BUYERS WITH THE SAME MODEL HAVE THESE ISSUES TOO I DON'T THINK IT'S SAFE TO HAVE THESE CARS OUT FOR BUYING WHEN THE CLEARLY HAVE A DEFECT THAT NEED FIXING
WHEN YOU FIRST START DRIVING THE CAR AFTER ABOUT 1 MIN THE ENGINE WILL LOSE POWER AND SHUT OFF CAUSING YOU TO HAVE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT THEN TAKES SEVERAL TIMES TO RESTART IT BEFORE YOU CAN GO.
The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Renegade. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 MPH, the steering wheel suddenly began to shake and vibrate, and moments later the front driver’s side suspension system failed to render the vehicle undrivable. The vehicle was towed to the local independent mechanic who diagnosed that the front rack and pinion rod had dislodged. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The local dealer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 122,000.
