NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2018 Jeep Renegade. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Radio has backup that went black. Cost is $1,200-$2,000 to get the radio fix. The map feature doesn’t work. Backup feature doesn’t work. I can’t adjust radio stations. I live in rural TN and need my radio to work for my protection. I live on social security. That would be my whole month paycheck. It should be covered.
The uconnect screen for the instrument controls and back up camera is partially blank. Had the uconnect replaced 3 years ago under extended warranty. This is the 2nd uconnect to go bad.
The rear windshield wiper hose is known to leak in these due to a poor design choice. The entire contents of the windshield washer fluid reservoir empties into the passenger compartment (typically into the rear passenger floorboard). Not only is the fluid being near the passengers a concern, but the reservoir drains completely in a matter of hours. In a snowy environment, you are now unable to clear salt spray crust from the windshield, greatly reducing visibility. I had my mechanic verify this today, and there are countless reports online of people having this issue. The dealer will "fix" it, but they replace things with the same substandard parts that are prone to failure. The dealer needs to have a more permanent fix that uses an actual hose, rather than a plastic carrier that breaks easily.
UNKNOWN Running lights and blinkers. Continually replace bulbs and either burn out black or just stop working. Possible wiring /electrical issues? Dashboard computer works at random. Ongoing for about a year. Last 3 months the dashboard lightning bolt light flashes along with the service engine light. it will lose power to move forward while in motion and at times loses steering power as well. Speed doesn't seem to matter. Can be going 65 mph or 25 mph and happens at random. Usually flashing bolt light disappears after vehicle is turned off and restarted but service engine light remains on for a few days but then disappears after that. Vehicle has been brought in to be repaired and diagnosed several times at different locations but since the warning lights on the dash disappear, the scan device doesn't detect an issue. Ongoing malfunction is potentially dangerous and very frightening despite how fast the vehicle is moving. Not sure how to move forward with resolution when nobody seems to find what is wrong with it? Money continually spent on trying to diagnose without resolution is frustrating and not knowing details puts others at risk as well. No active RECALLS and have not found or any prior RECALLS that would explain. Light issues are inconvenient but mentioned in the chance they are a component of the source of bigger issues that may include electrical , powertrain, etc.... *Dashboard warning lights along with loss of driving power has happened on multiple different occasions. in ADDITIONAL DETAILS BELOW I will record most current episode.
The screen started to glitch out for periods at a time. Now it is just black and nothing works on it now, including the backup camera (safety issue). The seat warmers and steering wheel warmer is on but now there’s no way to turn them off. The amount of people that complain of the same issues online is insane, this needs to be recalled.
I bough this car in February with no knowledge of the prior lawsuit on these cars randomly stalling. The past month- my car has stalled multiple times, in the middle of the road and I lose all control. It is such a safety hazard because people will literally almost hit me. I have to hurry up and turn on the flashers and pull over and restart and try again. There is no warnings for this and once it stalls- the steering wheel locks as well! I thought it was bad gas but after doing all kinds of research , there was 2 previous recalls on this car for the same issue! If it was fixed, why is it still doing this? Now I’m in a contract for this car and can’t afford to take a hit to my credit but it literally scares me to drive it! Check engine light initially came on but since has disappeared. I have recorded my car doing this and honestly have just let it sit because I cannot afford a mechanical bill right now.
Navigation screen not working Reboot by disconnecting battery Temporarily fixes problem Worsening screen problems
Fuel gage no longer accurately displays fuel level after a sudden loss of power of vehicle, and transmission lags when shifting gears.
The rear view camera was glitchy for a few years until finally becoming completely disabled due to the car play system malfunctioning. I have blind spots on each side of the back of my car that do not allow me to check for oncoming traffic when backing out. This also includes looking out for pedestrians. It has come to my attention that this may be a manufacturing issue as multiple clients have complained about similar issues.
Engine stall. The first time it happened I was going about 35 mph down the street and the car quit accelerating. Engine still running all the lights on did not notice any warning lights. Coasted into a parking lot. Turned off car and restarted and drove 1/2 block home. Read online to start car in auxiliary mode three or five times. Did that and did not have a problem. About 3 or so weeks later, it happened on the highway and almost caused a wreck. Very scary! I got to the side of the road 3 times. Restarted and barely would start driving and it would happen again. Had car towed to dealership and started claim with Jeep. They can not duplicate the problem and find no codes. Other issues: passenger car entry warning, head module? Or display will call people randomly, change radio stations and the reverse camera will come on while I'm driving, needs new struts ( only drive highway and in town ), uneven tire wear, auto windshield wipers does not work. Slow to shift out of first gear and jolts car when it shifts. Been at dealership for 3 weeks +
Engine is the big problem. When I drive the engine randomly shuts off without any warning. I’ve been on the freeway when it shuts down and I don’t have enough time to get over to safety. And I fear for my life every time it happens. It’s a safety hazard for others around me as well because my car stops without warning and others are going full speed around me. We have taken it do the dealership, service center, auto shops and no one has an answer or solution for us. We took it to the jeep service center and they didn’t know what was going on. Other than that we haven’t taken it to a manufacturer. There were so symptoms or warnings before this was happening.
The radio head unit (display monitor) has failed. I can not use backup camera, safety and security alerts. This problem is common across all Jeep renegades. No recall has been provided. These units cost $2,000 to replace at the dealer.
Engine stalled (lost power) while driving on the interstate during rush hour traffic. I had to pull into emergency lane. This happened 3 times within an hour or so. We almost wrecked the car. Very scary and dangerous situation. I checked and there are no recalls with my VIN number. I’m not sure what to do now
1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The primary components that failed in my 2018 Jeep Renegade, equipped with a 2.4L engine, include the electrical system and the fuel pump assembly. The vehicle has randomly reset its electrical equipment by morning and has turned off while driving, which stiffened the steering wheel without warning. These components should be available for inspection upon request. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? My safety and the safety of others were put at significant risk numerous times. The vehicle has randomly turned off while driving, causing the steering wheel to stiffen without any warning. This sudden loss of power and control in traffic is extremely dangerous and could easily lead to accidents. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, the problem has been reproduced and confirmed by both a dealer and an independent service center. The dealers identified issues with the electrical system resetting and the engine turning off unexpectedly, but solutions have been inconsistent. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? Yes, the vehicle has been inspected by the manufacturer and the dealership. The manufacturer has been notified of these issues, and the dealership performed diagnostic tests, but the problem persists despite their interventions. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, there were no warning lamps or messages prior to the failures. The electrical system would reset by morning without any prior indication, and the vehicle would turn off while driving with no warning signs. These issues have occurred intermittently since I purchased the vehicle, putting me in dangerous situations multiple times.
The LED screen went out and I cannot access any of the controls. Someone tapped my screen when it was blacked out/not working and now my audio only comes out of the back left speaker and the bass is up so high I can barely listen to music. It needs replaced, this is a distracted driving hazard, I’m shocked there is not a recall after seeing multiple message boards that it is an issue with many of these models. However not surprising since JEEP is cheap and I will never be purchasing one again.
• The fuel pump failed. Yes it's available for inspection • I was driving on a very busy road going about 55mph and the car stalled. I was able to coast to the shoulder of the road to avoid being rear-ended. This put my life at risk along with the other drivers if I was not able to safely get to the side of the road. • I am not able to reproduce the issue as my vehicle will not start after the incident. It has not been confirmed yet by another party as it just happened this morning. • It has not been inspected yet. • There were not warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to the vehicle dying. I was driving this morning (6/4/2024), going up a slight incline going about 55mph and the fuel pump stopped working and my engine cut off off in the middle of traffic.
My 2018 Jeep renegade touchscreen began delaminating and is causing the touchscreen to malfunction, hitting many buttons and eventually just shutting off completely while driving. I live in Florida and the summer temperatures range from the 90s-mid hundreds and it is not safe to drive a vehicle where the electrical systems are erratic and shut off and then turn on again on their own.
the screen in the center console has been in the process of delaminating and has recently become un-usable. If turned on, the effect of delamination (separation of the glue between the LCD and digitizer) results in pushed buttons, unintentional phone calls, and unwanted setting changes. This is disruptive while driving and unsafe since the center console controls a number of functions inside the car.
Following updates To the computer system the radio touch screen develops lines and then blanks out. Can no longer use the vehicle backup camera, control the heat system and other vital systems on the vehicle as the display is unusable. Desler in Colorado Springs says this happens often, Jeep is aware of it but offers no guidance other than replacing the radio at the owners expense..appears in all model year
May u connect. It don’t always connect to my phone. A now the screen it gets lines a then the screen starts to go blank then it will be gin to roll a display the compass seems to only do this while it’s hot. Outside. Then the screen is hot to touch
the turbocharger went out at 75k. had it replaced just after the #2 cylinder went bad. vehicle is unable to get to highway speeds and is very slow to accelerate. it is not due for an oil change for another 5k miles.
Airbags went off for no reason causing me to lose control of vehicle putting my life at risk. My insurance adjustor/investigator said they can't retrieve the info from airbag computer. I am being ticketed because the sheriff's department doesn't believe me.
My screen is not visible. Which doesnt allow me to use camera to reverse or backup with visibly seeing what behind through screen, which causes to be a hazard. Replacing will cause me tons of money that i dont have. Which mechanic stated there has been many jeeps that has had same problem.
When it is raining, the vehicle shuts down and service warning lights come on. The Service Engine, Service Transmission, Service Hill Assist, Service Parking Break lights come on. The vehicle will start, but won't go into drive and no fuel flows into the engine to give enough power to move. After about 30 minutes, the vehicle might run, but it will shift very hard and the Transmission won't fully engage. After 45 minutes, all the warning lights go off, except for the check engine light, and the car is driveable. This ONLY happens in the rain or after a car wash.
The screen of the radio is going black, showing lines. Cannot view what is one the screen
The console on the dash that shows the radio and back up camera view very frequently has white lines running through it. You can not see the screen. As a safety issue, you also can not see the camera view when trying to back up. It is a safety issue. I'm seeing on vlogs that many people have this same complaint.
back up screen
My car shutdowns while running unexpectedly. It has happened more than once while I’m in the middle of the street it’s scary . Also I keep putting oil constantly way before the due date it’s consuming lots of oil .
inspected radio and verified radio is delaminating on top off screen. Will need to replace radio
The vehicle has stopped running while driving. It turns off and the gas gauge will show E (there is a full tank) and the battery will die- it is brand new and it was tested when this happened. The codes are saying it’s the PCM- it hasn’t ran properly without a jump in months. And it will idol super high, over heat and scare everyone in the car. Had it towed and checked AGAIN. And everything was fine. (Note that the entire engine was replaced the year I got it by my dealership for the recall on the engine going through all oil in less than a month) I know I am not the only person who had had this issue with this specific vehicle. I’m still paying on it!! I have children to Think about. And at 700+$ payment monthly I shouldn’t have this issue. This vehicle has been nothing but trouble and the dealership gives me a hard time when I’ve called for help with it. The warranty ran up that I paid extra for. Isn’t that ironic.
My touchscreen is acting up and cannot use it for backup or any thing. This needs to be addressed as i need my backup camera to work as I back up when I park and is a requirement for my job.
The screen is not working half the time which controls heat, back up camera and basically everything! Have been online researching and this is happening to many people there needs to be a recall!
Engine has started to consume large quantities of oil. Had oil changed 1 month ago and have had to add over 2 quarts of oil for less than 1000 miles of driving.
There is a known problem (many online forums discuss this) with the 2018 Jeep renegade display system. The screen has issues that starts out with de-lamination and eventually escalates into the screen malfunctioning. This is extremely dangerous as the screen starts randomly selecting items. I.e. music stations start changing, gps is no longer available, heating settings change, and if CarPlay is used it starts making random calls. This is very distracting to the driver and is known issue with Jeep specific to the 2018 Jeep renegade model.
We were driving on the [XXX] in Nj when the car jerked and turned off without warning in the middle of 60 mph traffic. We had to be towed and were told it was the fuel pump. The dashboard indicated now than half a tank of gas in the car but that wasn't the case. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Oil leakage problems
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Renegade. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle unintendedly lost motive power and stalled. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer and was diagnosed, and it was determined that the engine was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000.
The screen goes out when it’s warm outside (80 degrees or more), which means I can’t use the backup camera at all or easily see a map if I’m traveling. This is an ongoing issue.
Fan inside stereo has stopped working causing stereo screen to overheat and go black. Screen is hot to touch. No back up camera visible or any other controls. Have taken it into Jeep to be looked at and all the do is confirm the issue. $2000 to replace!
Owned since new, the vehicle has 19000 miles on it and the factory head unit is mostly delaminated. Will randomly go into and change vehicle settings or otherwise self modify stations/input while driving. This can be very dangerous depending on what it does without human input. This is a very common problem, unsure why there is not a recall for this.
The glue on the screen melts running into the knobs and controls. As well as delaminating on my screen causing ghost clicks.
2018 jeep renegade STALLING, TURNING OFF WHILE DRIVING!!! 4WD service message, can’t turn steering wheel, car stalls and shuts down where it pleases
See attached document for complaint
in less than 50,000 miles my screen/radio unit that controls many features of the vehicle including heat/ac, rear camera view and radio/navigation tools, has stopped working completely. I'm seeing so many people having the same exact issue. Jeep would not help me with this issue without me paying a huge service fee to even confirm that it is broken.
Was on a busy highway and without warning, car started driving rough and engine light noted to be flashing. Just made it to side of road before engine lost power. Notified by dealership the next day that there was an internal failure of the engine and a new engine was needed. 88,000 miles and regular maintenance performed at a service station. Defective fuel pump was also replaced at 66,000 miles. Jeep is stating these are normal breakdowns in the 2018 Jeep Renegade. Even though there is known problems with the make, model and year of car.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Renegade. The contact stated while reversing, the back-over prevention camera operated as needed intermittently. The contact stated that the camera was occasionally turned on and turned off with the radio. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer and was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
The touch screen has been an issue It does not come on. It his controls the heated steering wheel and cannot be shut off which then over eats and makes it impossible to touch. The screen controls the heated seats and the heat in general.
While driving car will lose power and low oil pressure message appears. Car dies and then shift gear vehicle must be stopped message appears. Then press break petal to start vehicle. When I press the start button it takes a second to get power and start again.
June of 2021 I received an oil consumption recall notice, immediately brought the vehicle into Flagler Chrysler Dodge. Mileage, 20,400. They told me to bring it back in 1000-2000 miles which I did at 22,001 miles, they said it was fine and closed the recall. Shortly thereafter as I was driving my vehicle it would hesitate and by the time I could get it to the dealership within 2 days, I work 2 jobs, it died in the middle of the road. Got it started, brought back to dealership begging them to check the oil explaining the circumstances. The service manager at the time refused to have my oil checked unless I agreed to do an $86.00 oil change. Told him several times I had one with my certified mechanic at 4000 miles prior but still refused, told me I would have to make an appointment and come back to have the oil checked if I didn't do the oil change. At that point I had no choice but to agree to the oil change if I wanted to drive my unsafe vehicle out of there. Fast forward to Atlantic Dodge in St Augustine where I took it afterwards and asked for help. They assured me they could/did start the testing over. It failed the testing twice and because Flagler closed it out Atlantic had to go thru my engine warranty. That began 9/12/22. To date after many visits to the dealership 30 minutes away, pictures, documents etc. I was told in March of this year 2023 that I had been approved for an engine. But again they continued to ask me for copies of my oil changes, come up there to take pics of my engine, send pic of my mileage, vin sticker. I questioned why they needed these things again if I had been approved, the answer was always...they're working on it. On 9/25/23 I sat with and questioned Dan Moreland, service manager. I was told it wasn't my car that was approved in March, it was someone else's. Now told I was denied previous week by Jeep who falsely claimed Atlantic held my car for 30 days! I am [XXX] old driving an unsafe road hazard car and need help! [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Infotainment system constantly cuts out and freezes at random times with any phone connected to it. It takes 5-10 minutes to restart and you are unable to access and vehicle settings or the radio/navigation
