CORRODED TIRE VALVE STEMS,AND SPLIT NUTS
WHILE TRAVELING ON HIGHWAY VALVE STEM FELL INTO RIM THIS ,I BELIEVE WAS CAUSED DO THE FACT THE STEEL RIM HAS A LIP THAT HOLDS WATER IF THE VALVE STEM IS IN THE SIX O CLOCK POSITION IT SITS IN WATER /THE ONLY WAY THE WATER CAN BE REMOVED IS BY THE RIM TURNING ,THE RIM IS STEEL ,THE STEM IS ALUMINUM THE LOCK NUT IS ALUMINUM ALL OF THESE DIFFERENT METALS MIXED WITH WATER CREATES A CORROSION (ELECTROLASIS) PROBLEM INSIDE THE RIM THE VALVE STEM CONNECTS TO THE TPMS SENSOR ON OTHER MODEL JEEPS THE VALVE STEM IS RUBBER IT SEEMS TO ELIMINATE THE CORROSION PROBLEM I CALLED JEEP CASE#25386092 OFFERED NO RESULTS. DRIVING ON I10 NEAR CASA GRAND AZ OCT 4 2013 NOTICED VIBRATION. PULLED OVER AND INSPECTED TIRES AND ALL OK. DROVE SLOWER AND HEADED TO HOME... HEARD BANG... HEAVY RUMBLE VIBRATION PULLED OVER WITH FLAT TIRE AND INCREDIBLE DELAMINATION DAMAGE TO TIRE AND WHEEL WELL. *TR
AFTER DRIVING A SHORT DISTANCE AND PARKING, I RETURNED TO FIND ONE TIRE FLAT. I CHANGED THE TIRE AND RETURNED HOME. THE FOLLOWING MORNING I CHECKED THE DAMAGED TIRE AND FOUND THE VALVE STEM MISSING. I DROVE TO A SERVICE CENTER AND HAD THE TIRE REMOVED. THE STEM (WITH SPEED SENSOR ATTACHED) WAS LOOSE INSIDE THE TIRE. WE CHECKED THE REMAINING THREE WHEELS AND FOUND ALL WHEELS HAD BADLY CORRODED STEM NUTS, AND THAT ONE OF THE NUTS WAS CRACKED INTO THREE PIECES. REMOVING ALL STEM NUTS DAMAGED THE SENSORS AND ALL HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE "NEW" PARTS ARE ALL OF THE SAME MATERIALS AS THE ORIGINAL ITEMS, THUS I WILL HAVE TO REPLACE THE SENSORS, STEMS, AND STEM NUTS EVERY 2-3 YEARS UNLESS A FIX IS INITIATED. *TR
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
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 JEEP WRANGLER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH THE TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT NOTICED THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE WAS DEFLATED. THE CONTACT REPLACED THE TIRE WITH THE SPARE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSE THAT THE VALVE STEM HAD FRACTURED CAUSING THE TIRE TO LOOSE AIR PRESSURE. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE VALVE STEM. THE VALVE STEM ON THE SPARE TIRE WAS ALSO REPLACED WITH A RUBBER VALVE STEM. THE CONTACT NOTICED THE VALVE STEM ON THE FRONT AND REAR DRIVER SIDE AND THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRES WERE ALSO CRACKING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.
THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORS AND VALVE STEMS IN THE JEEPS NEED TO BE LOOKED AT. WE HAVE HAD TWO LITERALLY "BLOW OUT" OF OUR TIRE IN LESS THAN 2 MONTHS. THE LAST TIME MY HUSBAND AND SON WERE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY AND LUCKY THEY WEREN'T HURT OR KILLED AS AFTER IT BLEW OUT THE TIRE SHREDDED AND THEY ENDED UP ON HIS RIM. I CALLED CHRYSLER/JEEP AND THEY HAVE ME A CASE #. OUR LOCAL JEEP DEALER AND A LOCAL TIRE STORE APPARENTLY TOLD ME THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT THE VALVE STEMS/MONITOR RUST AND THE SEAL ISN'T GOOD ON THE TIRE ANYMORE SO THEY BLOW OUT...WE COULD REPLACE FOR $80 IF WE WANTED...HOWEVER THERE IS NO GUARANTEE IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN. ONLY WAY TO FIX IT IS TO REPLACE ALL MONITORS WITH RUBBER VALVE STEMS. I WASN'T WILLING TO WAIT ON THE "CASE" AND HAVE MY FAMILY'S SAFETY AT RISK SO I HAD THEM REPLACED ON OUR JEEP. OF COURSE CHRYSLER SAYS THERE IS NOTHING ELSE THEY CAN DO NOW B/C WE HANDLED IT OURSELVES. WE WEREN'T ASKING FOR MONEY OR FOR THEM TO PAY -- ALL WE WANT IS TO MAKE SURE THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE. THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND WON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED. THESE CAN BLOW OUT AT ANY TIME OR PLACE. MY HUSBAND AND SON ARE JUST LUCKY. PLEASE HELP GET THIS PROBLEM TAKEN CARE OF BEFORE SOMEONE GETS INJURED OR DIES!!! *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SENSOR ON THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE WAS ALSO DETACHED. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INFORMED WHY THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE SPARE TIRE AND THE REAR DRIVER AND PASSENGER TIRE PRESSURE SENSORS WERE FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 24,000.
