NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Kia Sedona. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Unknown the paint is chipping and peeling around the whole vehicle. Auto shop said it shouldn't be doing that and it could be a painting error of the manufacturer.
While my husband was driving the engine failed. The oil pan was filled with metal. The fuel injectors were not pumping oil
the slide door of my van (kia Sedona 2017 has been having issues when it is closing it does not close priority , the brakes as well has a strange movement when i release the brake . and it is making the car shake when i drive
While driving on the highway, the engine stopped working; smoke, metal fragments and oil came out of the front of the car leading to zero visibility. We were extremely lucky that we were able to quickly navigate out of traffic, stop the car on the side of the highway and get all kids out safely. The police and fire department came immediately to help. We had the vehicle towed and examined. The car had an internal engine break down. The connecting rod and the engine block were torn off and the oil pan was heavily damaged. It is deformed to the outside. The vehicle needs a new engine.
All maintenance performed at same manufacturer authorized dealership. My engine is currently full of sludge due the oil pressure switch under the recall not operating correctly before and after repair The was reported to dealer in October 2023 who engaged the manufacturer who authorized the repairs in May 2024 when vehicle would not hold oil at all.Car has not maintained oil level since repair .It has been in dealers since October 2024 seeking assistance from the manufacturer Recall MC-10210267-0001
My airbag light went on, without it having been deployed at all. I took it to the dealership and they said there was a problem with the circuitry in which they couldn't guarantee that it would deploy in a possible accident. I also noticed that there is a recall out for some vehicles of my same make/model/year with an airbag recall out that mentions this same exact problem, except that my vehicle VIN number doesn't come up as it being a problem, so the dealership will not fix the problem unless I pay for it.
The driver side sliding door will not open all the way and gets stuck even when the power door is not engaged. The passenger side sliding door often gets stuck and will not release when the power door button is pushed.
Paint peeling off the vehicle from areas under the rear and side windows.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sedona. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, there were several unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where the recall repair of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V031000 (Air Bags) was completed; however, the failure persisted. The dealer diagnosed that the front passenger's side air bag module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.
Power Doors on both sides of the vehicle do not latch securely. One out of every 25 attempts the door MAY latch properly. On some occasions you can see from outside of the car that the doors are not completely shut. The warning alarm goes off indicating that the doors are not securely latched. I have brought the vehicle to a local KIA dealership which informed me that there was a recall on the latching system. The part #'s outlined in the recall match the defective parts on my vehicle, however the dealership is claiming that its something else and refused to cover the defective latch repairs. The dealer has also not returned any of my phone calls since. This has been going on for nearly a year with no resolution and I am concerned for my passengers safety.
my engine blew while driving on the highway April 2023. my connecting rod snapped. no check engine light or oil warning light ever came on prior to this happening. I had maintained oil changes every 2000 miles since purchase. oil levels were within normal range when this incident occurred. the car showed no symptoms of this happening prior to it happening. Kia has engine recalls but my vehicle was not listed in this recall.
Backdoor paint around the rear glass is peeling off. It seems may be an indication of a bigger issue.
Driving freeway with much traffic. Engine suddenly quit and nothing worked. Had to coast into a safety shoulder and was almost wrecked in the process. There was no warnings on the instrument panel. Car had been routinely serviced. According to Kia Service, the engine froze due to oil sludge (used synthetic oil). The engine is actually a 2016 model. Mileage is 134,682. Event was 2/623.
Kia Sedona 2017 with 134,682 miles. Feb 6, 2023. Sudden engine failure during rush hour traffic resulting in a very hazardous situation. No warnings were given prior to failure. All service and recall stuff done by Kia dealer. Kia diagnosis, engine frozen and needs new engine. Failure of warning systems and failure causing an inoperable condition placed driver at grave risk and needs prompt attention.
I was driving my 2015 Kia Sedona and the airbags imploded out of nowhere, I was not hurt thank god. But my front of my car got damaged and so did the air bags and my steering wheel and all that got broken. I am writing to see if I can be reimbursed as I have fix these issues but I believe they hav to do with a recall Kia has. I spent a lot of money fixing it so I would like to get reimbured as I paid outa pocket for something that was a recall and a safety problem and could have been avoided. Please help me
Power Door (passenger side) closed on me when other door was opened. As I was putting a child into the passenger side middle row seat the passenger side sliding door closed on its own. (The door on the other side of van was opened at the same time the one began to close.) It did not stop when it it my body and kept closing. I tried pushing on the door to stop it from continuing to close but it didn’t stop. My husband reached to push the button to open it back up. I had bruise on my arm and cut on my thigh from the door attempting to close on me.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sedona. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the vehicle began to drive rough. There was white smoke coming from the exhaust and the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local service center to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that cylinder #5 had failed. The vehicle was later taken to the local dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the fuel injector was faulty and had caused the Oxygen sensor to fail. The fuel injector, fuel rail, Oxygen sensor, and gasket were replaced, and the vehicle was fixed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 57,000.
The car stalled unexpectedly while driving on side roads and highway feeder roads. It first stalled as I approached a stop sign. The rpms quickly dropped from 2000+ to about 500. The car stalled. I put it in neutral and restarted the car. It turned over several times before restarting. After restarting and as I sat in drive at the stop sign, the car rocked back and forth as the engine pulsed. I left the stop sign and pulled into a highway feeder road. I got in traffic and slowed down. The car stalled again. Again, I restarted it in neutral. This time it re-engaged immediately. I pulled ahead in stop and go traffic where it very quickly stalled again. Again I restarted it in neutral where it took a few attempts to restart. I do have video of the tachometer and speedometer as I anticipated this happening. There are tell tale signs that it may happen soon such as sluggish acceleration, quick drop in rpms, and pulsed engine revving not a result of the drivers input. These stalls have happened 20+ times in the last year.
Upon starting the vehicle, a loud sound originated from under the hood, but would not become noticeable after driving it. No indicator light would come on. Two or three days after that began, the sound suddenly became quite loud while driving it, which prompted my husband to pull over. Thankfully we were exiting the interstate anyway. He checked under the hood and wasn’t able to locate a loose belt, which is what it sounded like. He restarted the vehicle and the loud noise continued, so we pulled into a parking lot to call a tow truck. Still, no indicator light came on to let us know anything was wrong. Our mechanic determined there was a rod bearing failure in the engine. Upon further research of this issue, Hyundai and Kia have issued many recalls for this same issue in other engines, but have not done so for Sedonas. One main hazard with this particular failure is the risk of fire.
I went to the dealership to get the Air bag recall update and now the light started coming on and off the past couple weeks. And is on every time I start the vehicle. I have little ones and need to get this fixed
Driving and van started decelerating while still pressing gas. Got off road. Turned off van. Smelled something burning. Called tow truck. Tried to re-start and won’t turn over. Mechanic said the fuel rails too low code and cylinder misfire. Engine is now damaged due hydraulic lock. Kia recalled 2011-2012 vans for defective fuel rail and possible fire. Will not assist as we are 2nd owners and don’t fall under warranty. It def could have caught on fire based on what I researched. Please advise.
I purchased this van pre-owned from Bridgewater Kia in NJ with an extended warranty in 2018. There was a recent safety recall for airbags and the airbag warning light was on. I brought the car into Bridgewater Kia on July 18, 2022 and was told that the passenger front airbag module needed to be replaced and that it was not part of the recall. I was also told that this defect SHUTS DOWN ALL OF THE AIRBAGS in the vehicle. There are NO airbags working in this vehicle. I was also told by Bridgewater Kia that (1) the passenger airbag module was back ordered and coming from another country so they do not know when it will arrive; (2) that I would have to pay $1,161.73 upfront before they would even order it; (3) they would NOT provide me with a loaner car; (4) that the airbag was not covered by the extended warranty I purchased from Bridgewater Kia because that warranty ended at 100,000 and we have 101,263 miles on the van and, (5) that I should not drive the car because it is unsafe. This is absurd. An airbag module is not something the owner of the vehicle can maintain. Moreover, the van is only approximately 5 years old and basically designed for people with children. On one hand the dealer is telling me not to drive it because it's unsafe, but I guess expects me, in this economy, to go rent a car indefinitely while we wait from an international shipment? It's not possible for me not to drive the van. This is a major safety problem that involves children that Kia should repair free of charge. They should also provide their customers with a safe means of transportation. They can't delegate airbags to the consumer and it's hard to believe that I am the only one experiencing this. I also want to let you know I have contacted Kia directly out in California and I'm waiting for a call back. I waited because it's only today that I was able to confirm with the dealer that the so-called warranty is useless.
The vehicles paint is peeling off on multiple surfaces of which I have found is widely known consumer issue for Kia and Hyundai. There is a facebook group that details the issue: https://www.facebook.com/DefectiveKiaPaint/ I initially thought this was an isolated incident, but, have come to find out is much worse than expected. Please let me know what I should or can do to have the manufacturer address this issue so I do not lose more value in my investment than what one expects with an aging vehicle.
My 2017 Kia Sedona LX engine is faulty, and the head gasket has blown. My car has less than 100,000 miles (95,560). I have gone online and learned that many Kia Sedona owners have reported faulty engine complaints regarding Kia Sedona. I’m asking that an investigation be conducted.
Vehicle's engine seized while driving on the road. My mechanic I towed it to afterwards said that there was no oil in the engine. Engine was within KIA's recommended 7500 mile range between oil changes. No sign of oil leaking, and no warning lights came on before the incident to indicate there was a problem
Rear tail light housing compartments fill with water causing lights to go out or short. This needs to be turned into a recall for the manufacturer to fix, since there are many other owners of the same vehicle complaining about the same safety issue.
Vehicle automatically turn off power/engine while driving/moving. Able to turn on on next day. Mechanics cannot find issue and cannot fix.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sedona. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the front passenger's side air bag module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V031000 (Air Bags). The failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 86,000.
I will be driving and my headlight shut off. All of my warning lights come on, I lose all power and everything electrical shuts off. I am unable to use my blinkers, my head lights don't work, my radio doesn't work, and the car once put in park, won't shift. I have taken to 3 mechanics, spent over $800 and no one can figure it out. Kia won't help and claim I need to pay and take it to the dealership. They want $100 just to look at it. I fear for me and my children. This is a serious safety issue. I have seen several complaints online of the same thing. This is an issue with this vehicle and I'm scared I will die driving down the highway when my headlights just shut off
the engine failed do to lack of oil, no oil light lite. No warning that the engine used up all the oil
There was an unusual amount of oil "slug" created by the engine which caused the engine to be inoperable. Therefore, we had to replace the engine.
The rear turn signal fill up with water and burn out the bulbs
I was driving my 2017 Sedona and it started making knocking noises and quit running. I then started it back up and it quit again and never restarted. No other lights came on and there was no warning, the car just stalled. I had it towed in and the mechanic stated that the engine has failed. I believe there were recalls on Kias engines and I feel like my Sedona should be covered because the engine has failed just like the Kias that have had extended warranties.
The left side sliding door does not completely latch when closing. I have looked for obstruction and do not see any. I and my children are very concerned that we will not completely shut the door thus causing it to open when in transit or turning resulting in an unnecessary accident, injury or fatality. Whomever is driving the car has to stand outside and push the sliding door inward as it is latching to attempt to make sur the latch is secure. Please let me know what I need to do to ensure this is addressed with the the NHTSA and/ or KIA.
Driving home at night my main headlights randomly turned off while moving and went completely dark. The headlight setting was set to always on at the time of the incident. I quickly tried flipping to the auto setting and the head lights came back on. I drive 50 yards and they went back off. Fortunately I was not to far from home and kept switching back and forth to keep the lights on. I see similar complaints on the internet. Scary!
Engine turned off unexpectedly while driving. It has happened twice since owning the car (bought September 2021). Both instances occurred while I was slowing down into a turn. The first, I was slowing into a turn lane at a stop sign. The second, I was slowing into a turn through a green light. I was able, in both instances, to shift to neutral and restart while still moving. When the engine shuts off, the red engine light turns on, power steering is gone, but electrical stays on
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sedona. The contact stated while using the original jack that came with the vehicle when one side of the jack bent and caused the vehicle to collapse. The contact stated he pulled his back and did seek medical attention at a walk-in clinic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure.
I was unaware of these recalls but have had issues with the air bag sensor in the passenger seat, the automatic doors and with the turn signals switching the way they respond.
Both low beam H7 bulbs have blown out 3 times each. I have used Basic bulbs, and more expensive bulbs and both have failed within several months. I have used gloves when installing them avoiding touching the glass each time. Bulbs seem to fit properly into socket. Called dealer and no advice as to why this reoccurs.
This event occurred on June 3, 2021. The passenger sliding door sunshade (in use) began to rip from the top edge due to a 3.4 year old child pulling on it from their front facing carseat on a long drive. Unknown to the driver, the sunshade fabric had ripped about 5 inches away, leaving a portion of the rod exposed. When the damage was noticed, the driver disconnected the shade and recessed it for the next duration of travel in an attempt to keep the child safe and to ensure no further damage to the shade. While continuing the drive child, the child reached over and had begun mouthing the end of the rod while recessed. The van later stopped. Driver opened automatic sliding door from outside unknowingly while rod was in toddler's mouth. As the door retracted to the rear, the exposed rod end was thrust down the toddler's throat. The child shrieked in pain and fear. Driver reached around and attempted to pull the rod forward from the toddler's throat unsuccessfully (because the door was still in backwards movement. The toddler's head was pinned. The child finally turned their head towards the door and the road sprung out from pressure. Child had bruising and slight bleeding from the back of throat and a scrape along the inside of the cheek where the rod drug on its way out of the mouth. Child was removed from carseat and checked for severe injuries. There was no significant bleeding, the airway was unaffected, and photographs could not be taken due to the location of the injury and the age of the child. The child was held and consoled. The child and parents were extremely traumatized and it took nearly an hour to continue the drive to the destination. Child had instantly become fearful of the carseat. The sunshade was manually removed entirely from the rod and the fabric recessed itself into the opening. The rod is intact and in possession. We will not be repairing it due to fear of a repeated injury. This event could easily occur again.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sedona. The contact noticed a green puddle underneath the vehicle with the low coolant message displayed. The vehicle was initially taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that either the head gasket or the entire engine needed to be replaced. The contact was referred to the dealer for further assistance. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where the contact was informed that leak was caused by stripped bolts inside the engine which caused coolant to leak. The vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The engine was replaced by the dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that there were no recalls or warranties associated with the vehicle. In addition, the contact stated that the driver’s side sliding door intermittently failed to close as needed. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the door ajar warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where an estimate for the repair was provided; however, the dealer could not guarantee that the repair would fix the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 85,012.
MY 2017 KIA SEDONA PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT SIGN WAS FLASHING AND AIR BAG WARNING RED LIGHT WAS TURN ON. ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL AIR BAG ON PASSENGER SIDE MAY NOT WORK PROPERLY. IT'S KEEP GOING ON AND OFF ON MY DASH.
HEADLAMP WIRING HARNESS DEFECTIVE. LOW BEAM INOPERATIVE. HAPPENED AD I WAS DRIVING ON VACATION. I'VE READ SEVERAL BLOGS ABOUT SAME ISSUE WITH OTHER OWNERS. NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. MY VEHICLE IS 4 YEARS OLD.
I HAVE REPLACED THE HEADLAMP BULBS EVERY 3 MONTHS OR LESS, PURCHASING THE BRIGHTEST BULB, USING THE RECOMMENDED GEL,. ALSO HAVE PURCHASED THE LESS EXPENSIVE ONES.. NOTHING SEEMS TO BREAK THIS CYCLE. IT IS GETTING QUITE EXPENSIVE .. OVER $50 FOR 2 BULBS. IS THIS NORMAL? THE DRIVER'S SIDE BLOWS OUT QUICKER THAN THE PASSENGER SIDE. WOULD LIKE SOME HELP IN THIS. THANKS
We purchased this car in Dec 2020, and since that time the rear brake light bulbs have been blowing on a regular basis. Now the headlights blew as well. We took it to the Kia dealer who informed us that the bulbs are shorting due to moisture leaking in to the rear sealed beams. There is no crack and no sign of impact. This issue has been found on two other cars that friends of mine have (VIN#'s shown below), and dealer says they are seeing these on a regular basis. This is an extremely dangerous problem, as most drivers don't know that their rear bulbs are not illuminating. This issue must be addressed ASAP. KNDMB5C11H6293784; KNDMB5C17G6180615
I PURCHASED A 2017 KIA SEDONA FROM A KIA DEALER IN QUEENS, NY, IN 2017 WITH 50 MILES. I HAD AN ENGINE MALFUNCTION AT AROUND 65,000 WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY WITH A RELATIVE AND MY CHILDREN ON NEW YEAR'S EVE 12/31/20. WHEN I INITIALLY STARTED THE CAR, I HEARD A RATTLING SOUND, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS DUE TO THE COLD WEATHER; HOWEVER, AS I DROVE OFF AND DROVE FURTHER AND APPROACHED THE HIGHWAY, THE CAR STARTED TO DECELERATE. AFTER THE CAR DECELERATED, THE CAR CUT OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING. IN A PANIC, I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN AND PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE. I HAD TO REPEAT TURNING THE CAR ON, THE CAR SHUTTING OFF AND DECELERATING, TURNING THE CAR ON, AND DRIVING TEN MILES TO RETURN HOME. THE VERY NEXT DAY, 1/1/2021 THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT HANDLED MY LEASE BUYOUT. THE SERVICE MANAGER EXHIBITED PROFESSIONALISM AND OFFERED EXCEPTIONAL SERVICES TO ENSURE THAT I UNDERSTOOD THE REPAIR PROCESS. HE INFORMED OF CHARGES THAT WOULD BE INCURRED IF KIA DID NOT COVER THE WARRANTY. KIA WILL NOT HONOR THE WARRANTY. THE SERVICE MANAGER INDICATED THAT RECEIPTS WERE REQUIRED TO DOCUMENT OIL CHANGES PERFORMED ON THE 2017 KIA SEDONA. SERVICE RECEIPTS FROM KIA DEALERSHIPS WERE PROVIDED; HOWEVER, ADDITIONAL RECEIPTS WERE REQUIRED. I CONTACTED THE KIA CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE, THE CUSTOMER SERVICES REPRESENTATIVE EXHIBITED PROFESSIONALISM AND ADVISED ME TO GET RECEIPTS OF OIL PURCHASES FOR ANY OIL CHANGES DONE OUTSIDE OF A SERVICE SHOP. DUE TO LIMITATIONS IN RETRIEVING RECEIPTS WITHIN A CERTAIN TIMEFRAME, I AM UNABLE TO PRODUCE ADDITIONAL RECEIPTS. I AM WITHOUT MY CAR FOR ONE AND A HALF MONTHS, I AM RENTING A CAR WHILE PAYING MY MONTHLY FINANCE BILL, AND KIA WILL NOT HONOR MY WARRANTY BECAUSE OF A LACK OF RECEIPTS OF OIL CHANGES, ALTHOUGH THE CAR WAS PREVIOUSLY CAR SERVICED IN NOVEMBER 2020 AT A KIA DEALERSHIP.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sedona. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to immediately start and was experiencing rough driving with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and informed the contact of the head gasket, head gasket bolts, fuel pump, and fuel injector failures. The vehicle was not yet repaired. Additionally, the passenger’s side electronic sliding door failed to properly latch due to a faulty electrical locking mechanism. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failures, but no assistance was provided. The manufacturer informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in an undisclosed Extend Warranty Coverage for the failure. The failure mileage was 50,000.
THE VAN STARTED TO MAKE A RATTLING NOISE FROM UNDER THE HOOD 09/30/2020. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THE NEXT DAY 10/01/2020. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T HAVE AVAILABLE TIME SLOTS AND IT WAS FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE. THEN THE VAN SEEMED TO BE SLIPPING(NOT CATCHING GEARS) 10/04/2020. THAT EVENING 10/04/2020 AS I WAS DRIVING HOME ON THE HIGHWAY 70MPH THE VAN SHUT OFF (AS I WAS DRIVING) I MANAGED TO TRY AND STEER THE VAN TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I TRIED TO RESTART THE VAN, BUT NOTHING(NOT EVEN MY FLASHERS WERE WORKING. I SAT FOR 10 MINS THEN TRIED AGAIN TO START THE VAN. IT WORKED, HOWEVER THERE WAS NOW A WORSE NOISE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE ANOTHER 3 MILES BEFORE IT SHUT OFF AGAIN, MID MOTION 58 MPH. AGAIN I WAITED, AFTER 23 MINS I WAS ABLE TO START THE VAN AND TRY TO GET CLOSER TO THE DEALERSHIP. THIS IS WHEN THE VAN BLEW UP!!!! AS I WAS DRIVING AGAIN, SHUT OFF MID MOTION.THIS TIME HOWEVER, THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM THE HOOD. I CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND OUR VAN IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY ARE STATING WE'VE NEVER DONE MAINTENANCE TO OUR VAN. WE HAVE PROOF OF OIL CHANGES FROM JULY 2020 AND JANUARY 2020, SEPTEMBER OF 2019 AND JANUARY OF 2019. THEY ARE SAYING THE MOTOR NEED TO BE COMPLETELY REDONE AND THAT WERE NOT COVERED UNDER THE 100,000 POWER TRAIN WARRANTY. OUR VAN ONLY HAS 68,000 SOMETHING MILES AND IT'S A LEASED VEHICLE
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD THE LOW BEAMS STOPPED WORKING ON MY 2017 KIA SEDONA, REPLACED BOTH LIGHT BULBS AND THEY STILL DO NOT WORK, THE HIGH BEAMS WORK NOT THE LOW BEAMS.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sedona. The contact stated that she had become aware that the 2nd row middle seat belt clip did not fit in the designated buckle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was informed that it was a factory defect. The dealer determined that the 2nd row middle seat belt buckle assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
