NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2023 Kia Telluride. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The reverse camera remains engaged even after shifting to drive. This can remain after 10-20 seconds. As I started to drive forward, the camera remained engaged and hit on moving cars behind me causing the vehicle to emergency brake even though nothing was in front of me. Almost causing an accident
Second row drivers side captains chair seat belt buckle assembly has been broken side March 2023. Vehicle is brand new 2023 Kia Telluride. Captain's chair has been unusable since sealt belt does not latch (click into place) which is a major safety hazard. Kia claims part is on Nationwide backorder.
Driving down the road and I heard a crack/pop and noticed a dime sized chip in the windshield on the passenger side. No other vehicles nearby to attribute to a rock or something similar.
UNKNOWN-crack in windshield began and spread with out cause. Crack began, noticed within first 1000 miles.
Since owning the car December 27, 2022 the windshield has cracked with even the smallest pebble. In other vehicles it has only chipped the window, without resulting in a crack. The crack will keep going until it goes across the windshield. I have already had 2 windshield claims as of April 19, 2023 and am waiting to file my 3rd as my insurance company said if I have too many claims they will drop my glass coverage. Each windshield is around $2500 to replace. I am concerned with the integrity of the windshield should I not get it replaced again and how easy it is to crack. Although it has not happened to me, many owners are reporting that the sunroof glass implodes without anything hitting it. This causes concern over the overall integrity of all glass on the vehicle.
After 3 months, vehicle started showing intermittent warnings at startup related to multiple collision warning systems-- forward collision, blindspot sensors, rear cross traffic. Over a few weeks, it was no longer intermittent and occurred every time. Multiple ACD systems wouldn't function due to blind spot sensor failures. Multiple repair attempts and issue occurred again and dealer has been unable to repair.
The contact owns a 2023 Kia Telluride. The contact stated that on two separate occasions while driving the vehicle in Snow Mode and attempting to accelerate while making a left turn, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stopped and restarted the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000.
Second time in a week, less than 300 miles, instrument cluster screen went black, no power.
The contact owns a 2023 Kia Telluride. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle hesitated while responding. The dealer and the manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 500.
THE CAR IS BRAND NEW. A WEEK AFTER PURCHASE, I WAS DRIVING IN SNOW MODE. I WAS STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT, TURNING LEFT. I PROCEDED FORWARD WTIH MY LEFT TURN. I LOST ALL ACCELRATION POWER, CREATING A RISK OF BEING HIT OR CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. IT WAS LIKE THE CAR WAS IN NEURTAL. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW MUCH YOU PUSH THE GAS PEDAL. IT DOES NOTHING NOR DOES THE RPM'S MOVE. SWITHING OUT OF SNOW MODE, THE CAR ACCELRATED AS IT SHOULD. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME MORE THAN 5 TIMES. EVERY TIME, IT HAS BEEN ON LEFT HAND TURNS FROM A STOP, IN SNOW MODE. I HAVE SOME ON VIDEO. AFTER SOME RESEARCH, OTHER KIA TELLURIDE AND HYUNDAI PALISADE OWNERS HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. I BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE DEALER AND THEY TEST DROVE IT BUT COULD NOT DUPLICATE IT. SCANNED FOR DTC'S, NONE PRESENT. THEY SAID THE CAR OPERATES AS IT SHOULD. NEVER HAS A WARNING LIGHT SHOWN. ON THE LAST 2 TIMES IT HAPPENED, AFTER ALL ACCELARATION LOST, I HEARD A "CLUNKING NOSE" AND THE CAR JERKED. I THEN SWITCHED OUT OF SNOW MODE AND THE CAR OPERATED AS IT SHOULD. THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING SINCE 100 MILES ON THE NEW CAR. I NOW HAVE AROUND 600.
I have an EX trim. Driver Instrument Display is off and won't turn back on. I have tried turning off the car for extended periods of time and turning it back on but no luck. Not having this display on is a safety hazard not just because I cant see critical information but it seems when the display turned off it also turned off the following: - No audio from the turn signals - No audio from the reverse sensors even when I'm about to hit what is behind me - Can't tell what what gear I'm in from the gear selector as the light won't come on This is not acceptable as I just bought this car about a week ago from making this post. Not even 150 miles on it.
I am reporting a safety concern with the seatbelt system in my 2023 Kia Telluride related to fit and adjustability, not a mechanical failure. The vehicle is available for inspection. As a [XXX] driver, the shoulder belt consistently rubs my neck rather than resting across the center of my shoulder, even when the height adjuster is set to its lowest position. Because I must raise the seat and sit closer to the steering wheel, the belt angle pulls inward toward my neck every time I drive. As a [XXX] occupant ([XXX]), rear seatbelts must be fully extended into locking mode to buckle, resulting in discomfort and concerns about proper belt tension. There have been no warning lights, prior symptoms, dealer confirmations, or inspections by the manufacturer; this condition has been present since initial use and appears to be a design limitation. Improper belt positioning and limited adjustability may increase the risk of neck or upper-body injury in a crash and may discourage proper seatbelt positioning. I request that NHTSA track and evaluate this as a vehicle safety concern in the 2023 Kia Telluride and assess whether current seatbelt adjuster range, belt length, and geometry adequately accommodate shorter and plus-size occupants. I have experienced similar seatbelt fit and adjustability issues in multiple other passenger vehicles, suggesting this may represent a broader cross-vehicle design concern rather than an isolated model-specific condition. Videos showing seatbelt discomfort can be found here: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Driver instrument display is black, no information is displayed. It just happened when starting the car, no display. These LCD displays are dangerous. Go back to analog. I have NO information about anything going on with the car or it's speed. It's dangerous to drive. Multiple engine start/stop cycles do nothing.
My car was sitting in driveway and not moved for 4 days. The windshield broke and cracked completely
The contact owns a 2023 Kia Telluride. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the instrument cluster displayed a blank screen. Additionally, the parking brake inadvertently engaged while driving. The Auto Start/Stop was intermittently inoperable, and the doors failed to unlock with the remote starter. The vehicle was towed to the dealer; however, the dealer only performed a recall repair under NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V035000 (Air Bags). The failure recurred. The contact then stated that while pulling into a parking space at 4 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed, but the vehicle lunged forward and experienced unintended acceleration. The forward collision avoidance failed to activate to stop the vehicle. The vehicle crashed into the median, causing the front passenger's side tire to blow out. The front view camera fault message was displayed. No injury was sustained. The vehicle was then towed to Steve Schmitt Kia (11655 New Halls Ferry Road, Florissant, MO 63033) where the vehicle remained, not yet diagnosed or repaired. The contact later received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V298000 (Electrical System) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 11.
While driving on highway my new Kia Telluride’s suddenly made a very loud and scary popping noise. I pulled off at next exit to find a large chip and crack in the top of windshield. I did not see a rock hit it so I’m not sure how it cracked. Completely unacceptable and a safety concern if the windshield cracks this easily.
This has happened twice in the same day. We have less than 200 miles in the car. Wile accelerating uphill, the rpm’s drop and the acceleration dies and we have had to turn on hazards as it slows down while we pull over to the side of the road. Then it will turn back on and jerk forward and continue to accelerate. The car was in snow driving mode. Works fine but this happened twice. We are taking it to the dealership tomorrow but this stopped traffics behind us and was a huge safe concern as you need to be able to accelerate uphills.
I have owned the car for 2 months. For the 3rd time while pulling out into traffic the car refused to accelerate like it was having trouble with transmission(this made it dangerous for me pulling into busy traffic) For 10 to 20 seconds it would not accelerate and then finally it would operate as normal. The last time it happened when it kicked into gear the car jumped and it made a loud noise. This refusal to accelerate happened 3 different times
Auto Dimming function of interior lights and activation of headlights; This occurs very rapidly on/off in seconds, should be in minutes. When on, it completely darkens the center instrument cluster where it becomes unreadable in daylight conditions. This has occurred since the vehicle was new. On 15 October 2024 University Kia in Durham NC looked at the issue when the vehicle was in for recall SC316R. Tech stated window mounted NC Quickpass was causing the issue with obstructing light hitting the dash sensors. I relocated my NC Quickpass and the vehicle has continued to do the same activation to present time. It is so bad that while driving under a shadow of a tree during the day, it will go from Day into Night mode then back again temporarily losing the interior center dashboard if the interior lighting is set to Dim setting.
Windshield failed on the way home from the dealership after small impact. Passenger side window developed cracks at 486 odometer miles. The windshield chip spread beyond repair during the 6-week warranty claim process in which the claim was denied on 3/8/2023. The side window never took an impact. As shown in the photo's the crack is covered by the sideview mirror and just behind the window molding. Claim was denied as Kia claims it took an impact based on the photos.
VIN: [XXX] Owner: [XXX] Purchase Date: December 2022 I am filing an urgent safety complaint regarding my 2023 Kia Telluride. For nearly two years, I have unknowingly driven this vehicle with multiple active safety recalls, including: •Airbag wiring harness defect (airbags may not deploy) •Seatbelt pretensioner/tensioner defects •Front power seat motor overheating (fire hazard) •Driveshaft engagement defect (vehicle may roll out of Park) Kia never properly notified me of these recalls and never repaired them, despite my family using the vehicle daily. I drove this SUV with my autistic child and infant grandchild, believing it was safe. I have now discovered that Kia allowed me to operate a vehicle that could: •Fail to protect us in a crash •Catch fire •Roll away unexpectedly •Malfunction in ways that could cause severe injury or death This is a serious safety negligence issue. Kia did not offer a loaner vehicle, did not notify me promptly, and has not provided any remedy despite these recalls being federally regulated. I am requesting NHTSA intervention to: 1.Investigate Kia’s failure to properly notify and protect consumers. 2.Require Kia to provide a full replacement vehicle (2025/2026 Kia Telluride) or a full buyback due to prolonged safety risk. 3.Ensure Kia corrects VIN-level recall handling and compliance failures. 4.Document that Kia exposed vulnerable passengers (disabled child and infant grandchild) to unsafe conditions for almost two years. My family has been placed in danger this entire time, and Kia has not provided a timely or adequate remedy. Please investigate this matter urgently. — [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Driving down the road, heard a noise and the sunroof exploded. Thankfully we had the visor closed
Driving home from purchasing vehicle heard a pop like squeezing an empty water bottle. Did not know what it came from. Eventually noticed a fine line crack in lower corner of passenger side of windshield extending from edge of glass towards center and curving up. Length approximately 9-10 inches. Contacted dealer to be told they can't help us.
My Telluride has a factory trailer hitch so I COULD insert a draw bar with ball and hook up a trailer. But....no connection is there for electrical, so no lights or brakes would operate on any trailer I tried to tow!! Obviously this is a horrible SAFETY problem! NHTSA recalled the 2022 & earlier model year Tellurides because the tow wiring harness (essential for operating ANY towed trailer) was causing fires. A “stop sale” order was also issued. I purchased a 2023 model year in November 2022 expressly to tow my travel trailer. The recall was not disclosed to me, nor the fact that no wiring harness was available, or would ever be MADE available for my car. Kia advertises the 5,000 lb tow ability, shows the car in company sales literature towing heavy horse & boat trailers, lists the ability on my window sticker, and describes in detail in the owners manual how the fabulous tow system works! NHTSA had to FORCE Kia to stop selling the 2022’s but Kia has dishonestly continued to misrepresent the tow capability for the 2023’s. I have a $50,000.00 mistake sitting in my garage & Kia will not even respond to letters from me or my attorney. Can NHTSA help me?
The KIA Telluride Tow Hitch Harness Module has been responsible for getting humidity and dirt inside and starting a fires. So, KIA has recalled this issue BACK IN AUGUST, 2022 and told everyone not to park the vehicle inside or near any buildings and expected a solution this October. However, it's December and I have contacted my Dealer as well as KIA corporation and KIA is telling everyone that they do NOT have any solution for this fire hazard and they cannot even provide any date as to when they will have a solution. So, now, they are just shipping all the new Telluride's (that should be coming with the Tow Hitch and Harness) without them and saying they have no idea when you can get the new revised Hitch and Harness Solution????? At this point it feels as though KIA is not taking this seriously and offering ANY SOLUTIONS for their dealers or customers. So, what can be done?
Recall on my vehicle, dealership has not done anything about it despite me taking it to them.
I am reporting a recurring safety concern with seatbelt fit and adjustability that I have experienced in multiple passenger vehicles. As a [XXX] driver, the shoulder belt in many vehicles consistently rubs my neck rather than resting across the center of my shoulder, even when height adjusters are set to their lowest positions. Additionally, as a [XXX] occupant ([XXX]), rear seatbelts in many vehicles must be fully extended into locking mode to buckle, preventing a snug fit and raising concerns about proper tension during a crash. There have been no warning lights, prior symptoms, or dealer inspections confirming these conditions; they have been present since initial use. Improper belt positioning and limited adjustability may increase the risk of neck or upper-body injury and may encourage unsafe seatbelt adjustments. I request that NHTSA track and evaluate this as a broader, cross-vehicle safety concern regarding seatbelt design, adjuster range, belt length, and geometry for [XXX] and [XXX] size occupants.
