MY 2002 MAZDA MPV HAD A TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 42,000 MILES. IT HAD CONTINUOUSLY SLIPPED TO NEUTRAL AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS LEAVING THE CONSUMERS FAMILY IN A PERILOUS CONDITION. UPDATED 09/18/07.
2002 MAZDA MPV ES HAD A TRANSMISSION FAILURE WITHOUT WARNING ON INTERSTATE. WE DID MAKE IT TO A EXIT RAMP, BUT COULD NOT PULL TO SIDE OF ROAD. WITH THREE CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 8 WAS WORRIED ABOUT THERE SAFETY. MAZDA HAS INFORMED ME THAT THE INTERNAL PUMP IN TRANSMISSION GOES WITHOUT WARNING, STRIPING OUT GEARS. MY COST FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION IS 2800.00. UPON RESEARCHING THIS I AM FINDING THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG MPV OWNERS. FIRST AND FOREMOST I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF OTHERS WHEN A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OCCURS WITHOUT WARNING. UNABLE TO MOVE A VEHICLE ON A BUSY HIGHWAY OR ROAD IS DANGEROUS. SECOND I HYPOTHESIZE THAT A DEFECT MAY EXIST WITH THE INTERNAL WORKINGS OF THE TRANSMISSION IN FINDING SO MANY OWNERS WITH THIS PROBLEM THROUGH MAZDA CLUBS, AND COMPLIANT WEBSITES. *JB
I'M EXPERIENCING MISFIRE WITH THE 2002 MAZDA MPV. THE ENGINE COILS ARE THE CULPRIT. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH MANY MPV OWNERS AND IS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT. IT CAUSES THE ENGINE TO JERK AND LOSE POWER AND CONSUME MORE GAS. SOME REPORTED THIS ISSUE WITH ONLY 25,000 MILES AND MINE IS AROUND 47,000. I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE. *JB
(2) OF THE BACK (3) IGNITION COILS FAILED, CAUSING THE MINIVAN TO MISFIRE AND RUN POORLY. THE MINIVAN HAS 24,000 MILES ON IT. THE COILS HAVE BEEN REDESIGNED, SINCE THERE WAS A DESIGN FLAW. MY MINIVAN IS ALMOST (5) YEARS, SO IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. MANY OTHER MAZDA MPVS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM RECENTLY. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MAZDA MPV. AS SOON AS THE WARRANTY EXPIRED, THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED FAILURES WITH HER VEHICLE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD MAJOR ENGINE FAILURE. SINCE THE SUMMER OF 2007, THE ENTIRE VEHICLE VIBRATES WHEN DRIVING 40-50 MPH AND STALLS WHEN APPROACHING A STOP. THE VEHICLE IS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED. THE DEALER STATED THAT CYLINDER THREE WAS MISFIRING AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT NEWER MODELS HAVE BEEN UPGRADED. WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED, BUT THERE WAS NO BRAKE OR STEERING FAILURE. THE CONTACT ALSO SMELLED ROTTEN EGGS IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPAIRED AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WAS REPLACED, IN ADDITION TO OTHER SMALL FAILURES. THE VEHICLE BEGAN RUSTING WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR OF BEING PURCHASED. THE VIN, PURCHASE DATE, ENGINE SIZE, NUMBER OF CYLINDERS, TRANSMISSION TYPE, POWERTRAIN, AND FUEL SYSTEM WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 67,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 7,000.
THE TRANSMISSION WAS SHIFTING ROUGH SO WE HAD THE CAR IN TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP FLUSHED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND REPROGRAMMED IT. AFTER THE SERVICE THE TRANSMISSION STARTED FLARING AND LESS THAN 100 MILES LATER WOULDN'T SHIFT TO OVERDRIVE. I WAS ON THE FREEWAY, SO EXITED AND AT THE SECOND STOP-LIGHT THE CAR WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO GEAR AT ALL. I HAD TO PUSH IT OFF A 4-LANE ROAD AND HAVE IT TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP REPORTED THE TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED COMPLETELY AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. *TR
DRIVING ALONG WITH MY 2 1/2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER ON THE FREEWAY IN VERY FAST AND VERY BUSY TRAFFIC CONDITIONS THE VAN SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING LOST ALL POWER TRANSFER TO THE WHEELS. THE RED LINES RACED UP INTO THE RED, BUT THE VAN WOULD NOT BE PROPELLED ANY FURTHER BY ENGINE POWER. I HAD TO COAST NEARLY A MILE OR MORE ON SHOULDER LESS RUSH HOUR HIGHWAY, ALL THE WHILE TRANSITIONED LANES TO THE FIRST EXIT I COULD ACCESS, THEN AS MOMENTUM DECREASED I HAD TO STEP OUT OF THE CAR INTO EXTREMELY HEAVY TRAFFIC AND PUSH A FURTHER 30 YARDS TO THE FIRST TURN-OFF, DRIVERS DOOR OPEN, BABY SCREAMING WITH 55 MILE AN HOUR TRAFFIC SCREECHING AND SWERVING AROUND ME AND THE BLIND CORNER I WAS HIDDEN BEHIND. THE VAN HAS 54,000 MILES ON IT AND IS WELL LOOKED AFTER MAY I ADD. NOW MAZDA SAYS "NOT THEIR PROBLEM" BUT LOOK AT ALL THE OTHER PEOPLE ON HERE WITH THE EXACT SAME STORY! LOW MILEAGE 2002 MAZDA MPV DROPS TRANSMISSION WITH NO WARNING IN BUSY TRAFFIC. ITS A WONDER NO ONE HAS BEEN KILLED OR INJURED. I FEEL LUCKY FOR ME AND MY DAUGHTER. THEY ARE NOW ATTEMPTING TO CHARGE ME WITH $4000.00 FOR A REBUILT TRANSMISSION, 1/4 OF WHAT I PAID FOR THE CAR USED 10 MONTHS AGO. YES THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY, BUT EVERY MANUFACTURER WORTH THEIR SALT OFFERS "GOOD WILL" PROGRAMS FOR THINGS LIKE THIS, NOT MAZDA. LAST MAZDA I BUY, NOT ONLY IS MY MOST PRECIOUS POSSESSION, MY FAMILY, LEFT IN HARMS WAY BUT THEN THEY TRY TO SOAK YOU AFTERWARDS. DON'T BUY A MAZDA THAT'S MY ADVICE. WHY NO RECALL BY THE WAY? *TR
THE LIFTGATE DAMPER PIVOT BOLT BROKE, CAUSING THE LIFTGATE TO FALL ON MY HEAD. IT ONLY FELL A COUPLE OF INCHES BECAUSE OF MY HEIGHT. I SEE THERE IS A RECALL IN CANADA FOR THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE. I CALLED MAZDA - THEY STATED MY CAR WAS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. I SAVED THE OLD PART. I REPLACED THE 2 DAMPERS AND BOLTS - ABOUT 160.00 IN PARTS. BELOW IS THE CANADIAN RECALL NO: 2905L, DATE : 04/2005, MODEL: MAZDA MPV 2000-2004. SUBJECT: LIFTGATE STAY DAMPERS AND STUD BOLT REPLACEMENT. SUMMARY: NOTE: THIS RECALL IS APPLICABLE TO CANADIAN VEHICLES ONLY. ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, THE LIFTGATE STAY DAMPERS AND STUD BOLTS MAY RUST AND STICK TOGETHER, CAUSING THE STUD BOLTS TO BREAK OFF. IN THE WORST CASE, THIS CONDITION MAY ALLOW THE LIFTGATE TO SUDDENLY DROP DURING OPENING OR CLOSING, INJURING THE OPERATOR. CORRECTION: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LEFT AND RIGHT DAMPERS AND STUD BOLTS. *AK
ENGINE WAS RUNNING ROUGH AND MISFIRED. ONE DEALER SAID THIS WAS A TRANSMISSION MODULE. AFTER KEEPING IT FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND SAID THE SPARKS NEEDED ADJUSTING, WAITED ON THE TRANSMISSION MODULE BECAUSE IT WAS RUNNING FINE. THEN IT STOPPED SUDDENLY IN SNOWY WEATHER, TOWED, I WAS LEFT STRANDED FOR 2 HOURS IN COLD WEATHER, BATTERY REPLACED, 2 MONTHS LATER IT WAS RUNNING EXTREMELY ROUGH AND MISFIRED. A NEW DEALER SAID IT WAS NOT THE TRANSMISSION MODULE BUT THE COILS AND ALL WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED FOR A $1,000. THEY SAID 3 WERE BAD, BUT IF THEY REPLACED THOSE THEY WOULD BE BACK REDOING THE OTHERS WITH IN A FEW WEEKS. CAR HAD 56,000 MILES ,BUT WAS PAST WARRANTY DATE NOT WARRANTY MILEAGE. THIS SEEMED TO BE WHAT WAS WRONG ALL ALONG. I UNDERSTAND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER MIGHT GO DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE HEARD THAT COILS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE REPLACED AT THIS POINT.*AK
2002 MPV AT ABOUT 7000 MILES THE TRANSMISSION STARTED TO DROP OUT SUDDENLY. WE DRIVE A LOTON COUNTRY ROADS AND THERE IS NO SHOULDER TO PULL OVER ON. WE WERE VERY LUCKY NOT TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT. THIS HAPPEND TWICE, THEN WE TOOK THE VAN INTO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM, BUT CHANGED THE FLUID. DRIVING HOME FROM THE DEALER, WITHIN 10 MILES, THE TRANSMISSION STARTED TO SLIP AGAIN. AT A STOP LIGHT IT FAILED COMPLETELY, AND WE WERE UNABLE TO MOVE. MY WIFE WAS IN THE CAR WITH OUR TWO KIDS, STRANDED. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABOUT A MILE AHEAD OF HER, AND CAME BACK FOR HER AND THE KIDS. THE VECHILE ENDED UP BEING TOWED BACK TO THE DELERSHIP, AND THEY ARE NOW REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION. *AK
TRANSMISSION FAILURE AFTER 5 DOCUMENTED TRIPS TO DEALER ABOUT TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS: - CAR BOUGHT 2/2002. - 8/6/02-10,816 - HESITATION FROM START. WIFE COMPLAINING OF POOR DRIVING CHARACTERISTICS. DEALER COULDN'T VERIFY ANYTHING, EVEN THAT THE CEL WAS ON. - 2/21/03 - 21,065 - ROUGH DOWNSHIFTING. WIFE THOUGHT TRANNY WAS SLIPPING AND KICKING IN. DEALER FLASHED TRANNY PER TSB ON THE 3-2 DOWNSHIFT KNOWN PROBLEM. - 8/27/03 - 26,235 - POOR SHIFTING. DEALER SAID SHIFT SOLENOID STICKING. FLASHED TCM AGAIN. (NOT SURE WHAT THEY DID TO CORRECT SOLENOID) - 11/19/04 - 41,979 - TRANNY & TORQUE CONVERTER FLUSHED AFTER COMPLAINING OF POOR DRIVING AGAIN. NOTE: - CONTACTED MAZDA CORPORATE ABOUT THE LACK OF TRANSMISSION MAINTENANCE IN OWNERS MANUAL. MAZDA SAID THERE'S NO MAINTENANCE REQUIRED! - 4/4/07 - 94,XXX - WITHOUT WARNING, NO ACCELERATING, CAR SIMPLY STOPPED MOVING ON THE HIGHWAY. TRANNY WAS SLIPPING BAD AND MY WIFE WAS NEARLY KILLED PULLING OFF THE HIGHWAY! FLUID LEVEL WAS OK, COLOR WAS OK, BUT IT SMELLED BURNT. CAR REQUIRED TOWING. IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH TOTAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE. I CALLED MAZDA USA, WHO SAID THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND NO ASSISTANCE WILL BE OFFERED. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS ALWAYS SERVICED, AND THEY SAID THAT THEY'VE NEVER SEEN MAZDA SUPPORT A CAR OUT OF WARRANTY LIKE THIS. I COMPLAINED TO BOTH ABOUT HOW THIS WAS A DOCUMENTED PROBLEM FROM NEW. IF I WAS SMART, I WOULD HAVE FILED A LEMON LAW COMPLAINT AND GOTTEN A FULL REFUND BACK THEN, BUT THEY JUST KEPT INSISTING IT WAS A TCM PROGRAM. I NEVER IMAGINED THAT THE TCM WOULD BE ABLE TO CAUSE THE TRANNY TO PHYSICALLY FAIL. ALSO, THE FACT THAT THESE TRANNIES HAVE INTERNAL, NON-SERVICEABLE FILTERS IS JUST POOR DESIGN. LASTLY, HONDA HAS THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR ODESSY, BUT THEY ARE COVERING THE REPAIRS IN FULL! MY FRIEND HAD HIS TRANNY REPLACED AT 88K MILES! I'M EXPLORING LEGAL AVENUES OF RECOURSE. *JB
TL*-THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MAZDA MPV. WHILE TRYING TO ACCELERATE INTO TRAFFIC THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE RPMS RACED TO 5000, BUT THE VAN WOULDN'T MOVE FORWARD AT AN ACCELERATED SPEED. HE STATED THAT THE VEHICLE DECREASED IN SPEED, AND THE TRANSMISSION DISENGAGED AND DOWN SHIFTED. HE WAS ABLE TO ACCELERATE A LITTLE AFTER THAT FOR ABOUT A HALF MILE, TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLE LOST ACCELERATION POWER AGAIN. AAMCO INFORMED HIM THAT IT WOULD COST $2,000 TO HAVE A DIAGNOSIS OF THE TRANSMISSION. HE THEN HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO ROSENTHAL MAZDA, WHO HAD THE VEHICLE SINCE 04/02/07. WHILE THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE HE ALWAYS HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION. HE HAD THE TCM MODULE REPROGRAMMED ON THREE OTHER OCCASIONS. HE CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER AND FILED A COMPLAINT, AND WAS GIVEN CASE# 112644580. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE 64,000 MILES.*AK
HAD TO REPLACE TWO IGNITION COILS WITHIN 100 MILES OF EACH OTHER, AND AT LEAST ONE OF THE COILS HAS BEEN CAUSING PROBLEMS FOR A YEAR. ALSO, IT LED TO A CATALYTIC CONVERTER MALFUNCTION. *AK
TRANSMISSION FAILURE. *JB
TL*- THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MAZDA MPV. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ELBOW FITTING CONNECTED TO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD DEVELOPED A TEAR WHICH CAUSED A VACUUM LEAK IN THE ENGINE AND MADE THE BRAKES LOSE VACUUM ASSIST. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE HE FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS PART THAT WAS GOOD UP TO 70000 MILES. THE CONTACT STATED HE WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL. *AK
AT JUST OVER 80,000 MILES THE TRANSMISSION ON MY MPV STOPPED SHIFTING INTO HIGHER GEARS. THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING EXCEPT FOR A FEW TIMES WHEN THE TRANSMISSION SEEMED TO FEEL LIKE IT WAS SLIPPING, CERTAINLY NO WARNING LIGHTS OR MESSAGES SHOWING IT NEEDED TO BE SERVICED. *JB
WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO NOT TRANSFER POWER WHEN AUTOMATICALLY SHIFTING OUT OF OVERDRIVE WHEN THE ACCELERATOR WAS PRESSED. AFTER GETTING OFF THE FREEWAY AND COMING THROUGH A BUSY INTERSECTION, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED COMPLETELY (ZERO POWER TRANSFER) NEARLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT IN THE INTERSECTION AS THE VEHICLE COASTED TO A STOP. THE "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT" DID NOT ILLUMINATE UNTIL AFTER THE TRANSMISSION HAD COMPLETELY FAILED. THE VEHICLE HAD ONLY 57K MILES ON THE ODOMETER AND ALL SERVICE HAD BEEN DONE BY THE DEALER UP TO THAT POINT. THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO THE MAZDA DEALER AND DIAGNOSED AS TOTAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE. THE FAULT CODE WAS P0752, SHIFT SOLENOID CIRCUIT STUCK ON. DESPITE THE VEHICLE BEING PAST THE 3 YEAR/50K MILE WARRANTY PERIOD, MAZDA OFFERED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION WITH A FACTORY REBUILT UNIT. WE WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LABOR COSTS AND SPLIT THOSE COSTS WITH THE LOCAL DEALER. JUDGING BY THE ALREADY LARGE NUMBER OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS REGISTERED ON THE NHTSA SITE, THIS IS A KNOWN, COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES AND AN INVESTIGATION INTO THIS TRANSMISSION DEFECT SHOULD BE STARTED. *TR
AT 68,000 MILES, THE TRANSMISSION ON MY MAZDA MPV TOTALLY FAILED ON A BUSY INTERSTATE HIGHWAY OUTSIDE OF CHICAGO. IT WAS TOWED IN AND NEEDED A TOTALLY NEW TRANSMISSION AT A SUBSTANTIALLY HIGH COST. THE VEHICLE WAS 18 MONTHS OUT OF ITS 3 YEAR WARRANTY. THIS IS APPARENTLY A "KNOWN ISSUE" FOR MAZDA MPV TRANSMISSIONS. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE MAZDA AGAIN. *NM
COMPLETE AND IMMEDIATE FAILURE OF TRANSMISSION ON HIGHWAY GOING 65 MPH OF 2002 MAZDA MPV WITH 39167 MILES FOLLOWED BY FAILURE OF FAILURE OF IGNITION COIL. MAZDA DID OFFER TO GO IN WITH HALF OF THE CHARGE AT $1624.27. IGNITION COIL WAS A 396.03 CHARGE *JB
LIKE SO MANY OTHERS. MY TRANSMISSION FAILED WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. TOTAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE. APPROXIMATELY 80000 MILES. *JB
WHEN RAISING THE REAR LIFT GATE DOOR, ONE OF THE BOLTS THAT SECURES THE LIFTING PISTON TO THE VAN BROKE AND THE LIFT GATE FELL. THE PERSON LIFTING THE DOOR WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE WAY SO NO ONE WAS INJURED. I CONTACTED MY MAZDA DEALER TO REPORT IT TO MAZDA BUT THE SERVICE MANAGER TALKED ME INTO LETTING THEM REPLACE BOTH PISTONS NO CHARGE. THE BOLT THAT BROKE WAS RUSTED AND SO WAS THE OTHER ONE. I THINK THEY SHOULD INSPECT ALL VEHICLES AND REPLACE THEM. *JB
FRONT DRIVERS SEAT SEPARATED FROM FRAME. *NM
MY TRANSMISSION FAILED ON MY 2002 MAZDA MPV (ONLY 49,000 MILES! ON IT) ON A BUSY CALIFORNIA FREE AND I WAS LUCKY I WASN'T INJURED. I HAD NO WARNING, JUST COMPLETE FAILURE WHILE ON A BUSY INCLINE. WAS 250 MILES AWAY FROM HOME TOO, AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO NEAREST MAZDA DEALER. FOUND OUT THE WARRANTY IS ONLY FOR 3 YEARS ON TRANS, BUT IF I HAD PURCHASED THE CAR IN 2003, THE WARRANTY WOULD HAVE BEEN 4 YEARS AND I WOULDN'T BE STUCK WITH A $3500 BILL. ALSO RECEIVED SHODDY SERVICE BY SALESMAN AT DEALERSHIP BECAUSE SERVICE WASN'T OPEN AND I HAD TO FIND MY OWN WAY TO GET RENTAL CAR AND ENDED UP SPENDING 3 DAYS IN THIS TOWN. WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER MAZDA EVER! *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT 20 MPH ON NEIGHBORHOOD ROADS, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO LURCH AS IF BRAKING VERY HARD, AND NEARLY CAUSING A CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO 3 DIFFERENT SERVICE DEALER MECHANICS, WHO COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER DETERMINED THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION SHOULD BE REPLACED. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE ACCELERATING OR DECELERATING, THE TRANSMISSION HAS SHIFTED HARD SINCE PURCHASE. THE DEALERSHIP HAS PERFORMED MULTIPLE SOFTWARE UPGRADES, BUT THE PROBLEM REMAINED. THE TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFTED WHILE TRAVELING UP A HILL AT 75 MPH, AND THE RPM'S REVVED ABOVE THE RED LINE. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER AND TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO DETERMINED THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AND REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION.
TRANSMISSION FAILURE: IF YOU READ OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE MPV YOU WILL SEE MANY PROBLEMS W/ SHIFTING IN THE TRANSMISSION. I HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS AND WAS TOLD THE SAME STORY BY THE DEALER; THAT THE SOFTWARE NEEDED UPGRADE, CHANGE THE TRANS-FLUID. AT 55,000 MILES MY TRANSMISSION DIED WHILE I WAS GOING 75 MPH ON A FREEWAY. I WAS NEARLY HIT BY A SEMI TRYING TO PULL MY CAR OFF THE ROAD. I WAS 5,000 MILES AND 3 MONTHS PAST THE WARRANTY OF THE VEHICLE. MAZDA DID NEGOTIATE W/ ME TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AT A REDUCED COST BECAUSE I HAD REPAIR HISTORY WITH A MAZDA DEALER. THE COST WENT FROM 3,500 DOLLARS (I DID RECEIVE 3 QUOTES FROM DIFFERENT COMPANIES) TO 600 DOLLARS. LIKE MANY OF YOU I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE CONSUMER REPORT RATINGS. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS VEHICLE AND NO LONGER TRUST IT. BY THE WAY I HAVE NOT HAD THE ROTTEN EGG PROBLEM THAT I HAVE READ IN MANY PAST COMPLAINTS.

WHILE DRIVING ON RT. 95 FROM NJ TO BALTIMORE AT 65 MPH, TIRE LOCATED AT REAR DRIVER SIDE EXPLODED. VEHICLE STARTED QUAKERING AFFECTING VEHICLE'S DIRECTION AND CONTROL. THE BROKEN TIRE WAS REPLACED BY AN EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE. TIRE'S INFORMATION: DUNLOP SP 40 205/65 R15 94S M+S
ENGINE WAS HESITATING DURING ACCELERATION CAUSING DIFFICULTY IN DRIVING, ESPECIALLY MERGING INTO TRAFFIC. PROBLEM GOT WORSE AS ENGINE HEATED UP. DEALER DIAGNOSED PROBLEM AS A BAD COIL BUT COULD NOT DETERMINE WHICH OF THE 6 COILS WERE FAULTING. DEALER FINALLY GAVE IN AND REPLACED THEM FOR NO CHARGE AFTER I COMPLAINED TO CORPORATE. POSSIBLE RECALL ITEM?
THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO HAVE A HARD TIME SHIFTING GEARS. THE ROUGH SHIFTING BEGAN VERY INTERMITTENTLY AT ABOUT 45,000 MILES. AT 51,000 THE SHIFTING WAS SO HARD THAT THE TIRES ACTUALLY SCREECHED WHEN THE VAN SHIFTED GEARS. PROBLEM CAUSED BY DEFECTIVE SOLENOIDS. 2 OF THE 8 SOLENOIDS PLUS THE TORQUE CONVERTER HAD TO BE REPLACED TO FIX THE TRANSMISSION. DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT COVER THE COST OF THE REPAIR SINCE WE DID NOT GET THE VAN TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT PRIOR THE 50,000 MILE MARK. THE TORQUE WAS AVAILABLE AS 'REBUILT". *NM
THE DRIVER WAS PULLING INSIDE OF THE GARAGE AND WITHOUT WARNING THE DRIVER'S LEFT TIRE BLEW OUT. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO CHANGE THE TIRE,BUT NOTICED THAT THE LUG NUTS WOULD NOT COME OFF ON THEIR OWN. THE DRIVER CHANGED THE TIRE WITH A STRUGGLE AND DROVE TO THE DEALER. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE DRIVER THAT THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED AND THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING AS DESIGNED. PLEASE FILL IN FURTHER INFORMATION.
WHILE WAITING AT AN INTERSECTION VEHICLE ACCELERATED UNCONTROLLABLY. HOWEVER, CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO APPLY THE BRAKES AND VEHICLE STOPPED COMPLETELY. MECHANIC INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND DETERMINED THAT TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE NEEDED TO BE UPGRADED. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM RECURRED. *AK
SHIFTING WAS "CLUNKY" SINCE WE BOUGHT THE CAR IN MARCH OF 2002. HAD DEALER LOOK AT PROBLEM IN OCT 2004 AND THEY "REFLASHED" (REWROTE THE COMPUTER CODE) ON THE TCM: TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE. THIS SEEMED TO HELP FOR A DAY, THEN THE ABRUPT SHIFTING RETURNED. ON NOV 10, 2004, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED COMPLETELY, UNABLE TO GO INTO GEAR AT ALL. I WAS TRAVELING AT 55 MPH ON A HIGHWAY, IT SHIFTED OUT OF GEAR, AND WOULD NOT GO BACK IN. I WAS LEFT WITHOUT POWER TO THE WHEELS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. DEALERSHIP REPLACING TRANSMISSION UNDER WAARRANTY. *JB
WHILE DRIVING, THE CONSUMER'S VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION AT 35 MPH. THE CONSUMER'S VEHICLE HIT THE OTHER VEHICLE IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE. UPON IMPACT, THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONSUMER WAS INJURED. *AK *SC
STARTING IN 06/04 WHENEVER ONE OF MY CHILDREN SITS IN THE REAR DRIVER SIDE PASSANGER SEAT THEY BECOME SICK COMPLAINING OF FEELING SICK IN THE STOMACH AND CRYING. MY YOUNGEST HAS VOMITED. WE HAVE HAD THE MAZDA MPV 2002 FOR TWO YEARS IN SEPTEMBER AND HAVE NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM. THESE CHILDREN HAVE NEVER COMPLAINED OF FEELING SICK IN THE CAR BEFORE. IF WE KEEP ALL THE WINDOWS DOWN THEY DON'T GET SICK. WE TOOK THE CARE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TESTED IT FOR FUMES SAYING THEY FOUND NOTHING. *AK
I HAVE HAD THREE ISSUES WITH MY MINIVAN. I HAVE HAD A ROTTEN EGG SMELL FOR THE LONGEST TIME AND WAS TOLD TO CHANGE THE TYPE OF GAS I USED. AFTER FURTHER PERSISTENCE WITH THE DEALER, I WAS TOLD THAT THEY ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS AND THEY ARE NOW FINALLY REPLACING THEM AFTER 5 TRIPS TO THE DEALER COMPLAINING. SECOND, THERE WAS A COMPUTER SENSOR FAILURE WHICH CAUSED THE VAN TO OVERHEAT...I HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER AND GET A NEW SENSOR AND TEMPERATURE GAUGE. THIRD, I HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT HESITATION IN THE TRANSMISSION ON TURNS AND WHEN SLOWING DOWN AND THEN ACCELERATING. THIS IS STILL UNRESOLVED. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO STATE THAT THE STEARING COLUMN GEAR SHIFT IS EXTREMELY ANNOYING AND I HAVE ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION HIT THE VEHICLE OUT OF GEAR.*AK
I HAVE A LEMON 2002 MAZDA MPV. WE HAVE TAKEN THE VAN IN FOR SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO FIX THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM, ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS GOING BAD. I ALSO EXPERIENCED THE NASTY ROTTON EGG SMELL IN MY VAN ONLY TO ASSUME IT WAS THE AREA I WAS IN (SEWER). ON APRIL 1, 2004 I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY WITH MY THREE CHILDREN IN THE VAN WHEN MY VAN STOPPED WORKING. I PULLED OVER ONTO THE SNOWY HIGHWAY TO TRY TO RESTART THE CAR BUT FAILED. AFTER SITTING ON THE HIGHWAY FOR 2 HOURS, WAITING FOR A TOW, I CAME TO FIND OUT THAT THE TRANSMISSION WENT BAD IN MY VAN. THEY REPLACED MY TRANSMISSION OVER A PERIOD OF 8 DAYS. THE VERY NEXT DAY AFTER RECEIVING MY VAN BACK, IT WOULD NOT START IN THE MORNINGS AND BEGAN TO BACKFIRE AND STALL. I TOOK THE VAN IN THE NIGHT BEFORE THE SERVICE DAY ONLY TO BE WITH OUT IT FOR ANOTHER WEEK. I JUST GOT MY VAN BACK ON APRIL 23. IT STILL DOES NOT START IN THE MORNINGS OR AFTER IT SITS FOR SEVERAL HOURS!!!! SO IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING THE BUCKING, KICKING, HESITATION SHIFTING GEARS.....YOUR TRANSMISSION MAY FAIL!!!!! I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT MY CAR IS A LEMON UNDER OHIO'S STATE LAWS. I AM GETTING MY MONEY BACK!!! WE PICKED MAZDA FOR THEIR KNOWN RELIABILITY AND SATISFACTION. I BOUGHT A MAZDA 2002 MPV LX USED WITH 9K MILES ON IT. IT HAS A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM SIMILAR TO THOSE I HAVE REVIEWED ON YOUR SITE, INTERMITTENT HARD SHIFTING BETWEEN FIRST AND SECOND IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY FOUND A CODE REFERENCE AN ELECTRICAL ADJUSTMENT. SUPOSSEDLY FIXED, NOT! TOOK IT BACK AND WAS TOLD THE 2002 MPV HAS HARD SHIFTING. SO DOES MY OLD POLICE BATON! I AM TAKING IT BACK AND TALKING TO THE OWNER TO GET THE TRANS FIXED OR REPLACED. IF THEY WILL NOT DO THAT THEN I WILL GO TO 3 REPUTABLE TRANSMISSION REPAIR STORES AND GET IT IN WRITING AND FILE A CONSUMER FRAUD COMPLAINT WITH THE STATE OF FL. CAN YOU LOOK INTO THIS BEING THAT THERE ARE MORE THAN ONE TRANSMISSION COMPLAINT LISTED AND ALL ARE SIMILAR AND WE GET BRUSHED OFF?
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION "BUCKS" OR OTHERWISE SHIFTS VIOLENTLY INTO THE NEXT GEAR (ANY GEAR, PICK ONE). MY MPV CURRENTLY HAS 26,000 ON IT. WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM FOR OVER A YEAR, BUT HAVEN'T HAD THE TIME TO TAKE IT IN. FINALLY TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALER. SERVICE MANAGER STATED (WITH A STRAIGHT FACE) TO ME THAT THE BRAKES (CALIPERS) WERE CREATING "DRAG" AND THE VIOLENT SHIFT WOULD OCCUR WHEN REACHING THE THRESHOLD OF POWER TO GO INTO THE NEXT GEAR. HE RECOMMENDED THAT WE HAVE THE BRAKE PADS REPLACED AND THE ROTORS "TURNED" (FOR $250). WE DID NOT HAVE THE WORK DONE, BUT PICKED UP THE CAR. THE SHIFTING WAS A LOT BETTER WHEN WE PICKED UP THE CAR. THAT LASTED ABOUT A WEEK. NOW IT IS STARTING THAT JOLTING AGAIN. WE TOOK THE CAR TO BIG O FOR OIL CHANGE, TIRE ROTATION AND SPECIFICALLY ASKED THEM TO CHECK THE BRAKES. ROTORS AND CALIPERS ARE FINE AND THE BRAKE PADS ONLY HAVE 25% WEAR ON THEM. NOW, I AM BLONDE, BUT IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IF THE BRAKES WERE CREATING "DRAG" THERE WOULD BE A MUCH HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF WEAR ON THE PADS, OR THERE WOULD BE SOMETHING INDICATING THAT THE CALIPERS WERE MALFUNCTIONING, ESPECIALLY AFTER 26,000 MILES. IN FACT, THE BIG O MANAGER THOUGHT MY HUSBAND WAS A LITTLE DAFT IN ASKING ABOUT BRAKES HAVING ANY SUCH AFFECT ON GEAR SHIFTING. *JB

I HAVE HAD TROUBLE WITH THE MAZDA MPV TRANSMISSION OF MY CAR SINCE I PURCHASED IT IN SEPTEMBER OF 2002. THE TRANSMISSION HAS INTERMITTENT ROUGH SHIFTS/JOLTS. THE DEALER HAS TRIED TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS AND ALSO CHANGED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AT 20,000 MILES (WHICH I WAS CHARGED FOR), BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. LEFT (BEHIND DRIVER) REAR AUTO-SLIDING DOOR WILL NOT SHUT. ELECTRIC DOOR FEATURE MUST BE DISABLED & DOOR MUST BE SHUT AND RE-OPENED MANUALLY. IF NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE PROBLEM FOR MAZDA REPAIRPERSON, THEY WOULD NOT PERFORM SERVICE; BUT PROBLEM WAS SPORADIC & COULD NOT BE PREDICTED. FINALLY THE PROBLEM PERSISTED & LOWER DOOR SWITCH WAS REPLACED. ONE YEAR LATER, PROBLEM IS OCCURRING AGAIN. DOOR TERMINALS WERE CLEANED B/C CONTACTS WERE NOT MAKING GOOD CONNECTIONS. *AK
CONSUMER CALLED COMPLAINING ABOUT ELECTRICAL DOOR PROBLEMS. CONSUMER WAS PUTTING HER CHILD IN VEHICLE AND HER WRIST HIT THE ELECTRONIC SYSTEM THAT CAUSED THE DOOR TO CLOSE PARTIALLY, AND IT GAVE HER AN ELECTRICAL SHOCK WHICH BRUISED HER WRIST. DEALER WAS CONTACTED, AND MECHANIC AT DEALER TOLD HER THAT IT WAS NORMAL ,THAT HE ALWAYS GETS A SHOCK WHEN USING ANY TYPE OF METAL TOOLS. MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED AT THE TIME OF THIS CALL.*AK

WE HAD RESPONDED TO A RECALL PUT OUT BY MAZDA AND TOOK OUR VAN TO FIRST TEAM MAZDA IN CHESAPEAKE, VA THIS PAST JUNE 2003. WE HAD THE RECALL WORK DONE AND ACTUALLY HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE PASSENGER SIDE FOG LIGHT BEING DISLODGED WHENEVER WE TOOK IT IN . AS FAR AS WE KNEW, THE PROBLEMS WERE CORRECTED. AT ANY RATE, WE ARE NOW CONCERNED WITH THE SAFETY ISSUE OF THESE FOG LIGHTS. WHEN WE CONTACTED MAZDA CUSTOMER SERVICE, WE WERE TOLD THAT THEY HAD NOT HEARD OF ANY MPV ACTUALLY CATCHING ON FIRE AND HAVE PROCEEDED TO "CREATE A FILE" ON OUR ISSUE. WOULD REALLY LIKE SOME FEEDBACK ON WHY WE WERE THE ONES WHO HAPPENED TO EXPERIENCE A FIRE. WE HAVE THE OLD PARTS AND HAVE A CLAIM GOING WITH USAA. AT THIS POINT, WE ARE RATHER LEARY ABOUT DRIVING A VAN THAT MAY CATCH ON FIRE AGAIN. PLEASE HELP US GET THE WORD OUT ON THIS HAZARD. *NLM
MPV FOG LIGHT CAUGHT FIRE AFTER WE HAD THE RECALL WORK DONE ON IT THROUGH THE DEALERSHIP WE PURCHASED IT FROM. THE FIRE OCCURRED ON 8/25/03 AND THE RECALL WORK WAS DONE BACK IN JUNE. MY FAMILY WAS IN THE VAN AT THE TIME OF THE FIRE AND LUCKILY NO ONE WAS INJURED.
