TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCEDES BENZ E320. THE CONTACT STATED THAT FUEL LEAKED INTO THE REAR DRIVER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 111,000.
FUEL TANK/SENDING UNITS ARE LEAKING BADLY ON TOP OF TANK AND SEEPING RAW FUEL AND HEAVY FUMES INTO PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. THIS IS A HORRIBLE SAFETY RISK AND I AM AWARE THAT THIS IS BECOMING A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE WITH SUCH A LARGE AMOUNT OF FUEL SOAKING INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. I ALSO HAVE PHOTOS OF THE AFFECTED AREA IF USEFUL. *TR
A STRONG SMELL OF GAS WAS IN THE CAR. TOOK TO DEALER AND THEY HAD TO REPLACE TANKS AND EMITTERS. GAS HAD GOTTEN IN THE SEATS AS WELL AND THEY HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE SMELL WAS SO STRONG THAT IT MADE ME AND WIFE SICK. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCEDES BENZ E500. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, THE "SUSPENSION IS TOO LOW DO NOT DRIVE" WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SUSPENSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
I PURCHASED MY CAR USED AT 132000 MILES. THIS WAS A PRE EXISTING CONDITION THAT DEALER DIDN'T MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT, BECAUSE THE NEXT DAY I FILLED THE TANK AS IT WAS SOLD TO ME WITH LESS THAN 1/4 TANK, NOW I KNOW WHY, I GOT A VERY STRONG ODOR OF GAS THAT FILLED MY GARAGE AND SMELLED INSIDE THE CAR AS WELL. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME I FILL THE TANK. IT ALSO SETS A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM (NOT A MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP) REFUSES ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PROBLEM. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CODE IS "EVAPORATIVE EMISSION LEAK DETECTED (SMALL LEAK)". ALSO BECAUSE OF THE ISSUE MY GAS LIGHT WILL RANDOMLY START BLINKING AND WHEN I ACCELERATE THE CENTER DISPLAY BEEPS LIGHTS UP RED AND SAID CHECK FUEL CAP. FUEL CAP IS FINE, I THINK IT'S RELATED TO THE LEAK.
EVAP CODE - P0456. FUEL SENDER LEAK. FAULTY FUEL PUMP/GAS TANK LEAK. STRONG FUEL SMELL COMING FROM REAR OF VEHICLE AS WELL AS GASOLINE POOLING UNDER VEHICLE. HEAVILY FUMED CABIN AS WELL. *TR
2004 MERCEDES BENZ E500 SMELLS OF GASOLINE BOTH INSIDE AND AROUND THE VEHICLE AFTER REFUELING TO THE FULL TANK LEVEL. IT HAS BECOME NECESSARY TO LEAVE THE GARAGE DOOR OPEN AFTER FUELING IN ORDER TO VENTILATE THE GARAGE AND KEEP FUMES OUT OF THE HOUSE. THE ODOR GRADUALLY DECREASES WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN 40-50 MILES AND THE FUEL LEVEL IN THE TANK DROPS. *TR
ON THURSDAY OCTOBER 23, 2014, I TOOK MY 2004 E320 SEDAN TO SCHUMACHER MERCEDES BENZ IN SCOTTSDALE ARIZONA. I ASKED THEM TO CHECK OUT A 'CHECK ENGINE' LIGHT AND INFORMED THEM THAT THERE WAS AN OCCASIONAL STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE. ON FRIDAY OCTOBER 24, 2014, THE DEALERSHIP CALLED TO INFORM ME THAT THE GAS TANK AND SENSORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF A LEAK. MY SERVICE COORDINATOR ALSO TOLD ME THAT IT IS A COMMON / KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE MAKE AND MODEL OF MY VEHICLE. THE COST TO REPAIR IT WOULD BE $4000 + I CONTACTED THE NHTSA WEBSITE AND LEARNED THAT THERE IS AN OPEN INVESTIGATION AND A COMPLAINT OPENED MARCH 15, 2013 ,,, HOWEVER THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL ISSUED AS OF THIS TIME. THE CAR HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED. ON OCTOBER 24TH, I TOOK IT TO A REPAIR SHOP WHO WORKS EXCLUSIVELY ON MERCEDES BENZ VEHICLES, FOR A SECOND OPINION / EVALUATION. *TR
AFTER FILLING THE GAS TANK, I PARKED THE CAR IN MY ATTACHED GARAGE THE NEXT DAY THE GAS FUMES WERE SO STRONG INSIDE MY BASEMENT THAT I CALLED MY PLUMBER, THINKING I HAD A GAS LEAK FROM THE FURNACE. THEN I WENT INTO MY GARAGE, AND THE GAS SMELL WAS OVERWHELMING. WHEN I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MERCEDES BENZ, THEY DID A DIAGNOSTIC AND DETERMINED THE FUEL SENSOR WAS BAD, ALONG WITH CRACKED INNER TANK MODULE. I HAD TO REPLACE ALL THE ASSOCIATED PARTS (CABLE HARNESS, AUXILIARY PUMP, BRACKET, SEAL RING, ETC. PARTS: $710.13 AND LABOR: $496.80 = 1206.93. THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE REVIEWED AS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. I'VE HAD MANY AUTOMOBILES, AND NEVER DID I HAVE THIS HEADACHE. AND I CERTAINLY WOULD NOT EXPECT THIS FROM THIS CAR. MERCEDES BENZ NEEDS TO OWN UP TO THESE DEFAULTS!!! ADDITIONALLY, MY BATTERY DIED AT THE SAME TIME - ANOTHER PARTS: $284.05, LABOR: $207.00. *TR
I OWN A 2004 MERCEDES BENZ E55. I AM REPORTING A VERY STRONG GAS ODOR IN THE CABIN, AS WELL AS THE EXTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE ESPECIALLY AFTER FUELING THE VEHICLE. THE APPROPRIATE RECALL WAS DONE ON MY CAR IN 2008 AND THE SAME PARTS ARE FAILING. THE SMELL OF GAS IN THE CABIN IS OVERWHELMING!!! SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS ONGOING ISSUE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCEDES BENZ E500. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE "YOU HAVE REDUCED CAPACITY" WARNING SENSOR ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO MERGE TO THE EMERGENCY LANE, WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND SANK TO THE FLOOR FAILING TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TURN OFF AND RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) UNIT WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 124,839.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCEDES BENZ E500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND TRAVELED ABNORMALLY TO THE FLOORBOARD. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO REDUCE IN SPEED AND THE VEHICLE WAS SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 127,000.
WIRE IN WIRING HARNESS TO TRUNK LID SEVERED, PREVENTING THIRD BRAKE LAMP AND BOTH LICENSE PLATE LAMPS FROM FUNCTIONING. *TR

AFTER FILLING THE GAS TACK - I STARTED SMELLING FUEL IN THE GARAGE. I DIDN'T SEE A GAS LEAK ON THE FLOOR BUT THE SMELL OF FUEL WAS VERY STRONG. THIS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT MONTH. IT WOULD GO AWAY AFTER 2-3 GALLONS OF FUEL WERE BURNT OFF. STRONG GASOLINE SMELL INSIDE CAR AFTER FILL UP. *TR
I SMELLED GAS INSIDE THE CABIN WHEN I OPENED THE DOOR ON 8/9/2014. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I SMELLED THIS IN THE CAR. I LOOKED ONLINE TO SEE IF ANYONE HAD REPORTED THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND MANY POSTINGS POINTING TO THIS RECALL PETITION. I WAS THEN ABLE TO VISUALLY CONFIRM THAT I HAVE SMALL POOLS OF FUEL AROUND THE BASE OF THE SENDER/SENSOR UNITS. THESE POOLS OF FUEL WERE PRESENT ON BOTH THE PASSENGER-SIDE AND DRIVER-SIDE UNITS. *TR

THE CONTACT THEN EJECTED THE ENTIRE REAR SEAT BENCH AND NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A PUDDLE OF FUEL WHERE THE FUEL TANK UNIT WAS LOCATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 135,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCEDES BENZ E500. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE CRANK SHAFT SENSOR WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AND THE FAILURE WAS REMEDIED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 49,000. THE CONSUMER NO LONGER OWNS THE VEHICLE. UPDATED 10/21/14
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCEDES BENZ E320. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH AFTER REFUELING THE FUEL TANK, SHE SMELLED A STRONG FUEL ODOR. THE ODOR WAS PRESENT ON 35 OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC HOWEVER, THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 89,854.
FUEL TANK LEAKS AND STRONG ODOR OF FUEL IN PASSENGER COMPARTMENT AFTER A FILL UP. VERY DANGEROUS COMBINATION. A FIRE IS LIKELY AT SOME POINT. TOOK VEHICLE IN FOR REPAIRS UNDER NHTSA ACTION # EA13003 AND MERCEDES DISAVOWS ANY KNOWLEDGE OF EXTENSION OF WARRANTY AND REPAIRS. THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME $2100. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS AND UNACCEPTABLE. PLEASE HELP. YOU HAVE NEGOTIATED A FIX AND THEY ARE REFUSING TO DO IT. YOU SHOULD HAVE MADE THEM RECALL THE VEHICLES. NOW WE HAVE JUST MORE HEADACHES FOR OWNERS OF EFFECTED CARS. *TR
I HAVE A FUEL LEAK ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY FUEL TANK. THE FUMES ARE SO STRONG THAT I CANNOT OPERATE THE VEHICLE DUE THE AMOUNT OF FUEL THAT SETTLES ON TOP OF THE PUMP/ REGULATOR ACCESS OUTLET. THE STREAM IS EMITTING FROM THE AREA OF LEAKAGE SO QUICKLY THAT IT TAKES ABOUT A MINUTE TO PUDDLE AND DRIP TO THE GROUND. THE DANGER OF A METAL OBJECT BEING PICKED UP BY A TIRE AND CAUGHT UP ON A PIECE OF METAL UNDER MY VEHICLE, AT THAT LOCATION, WOULD CREATE A SPARK THAT WOULD SURELY CAUSE A BLAZING FIRE TO ERUPT. ALSO, THERE IS THE DANGER OF A PASSERBY TOSSING A CIGARETTE OUT OF HIS/ HER WINDOW, BEING CAUGHT UP BY THE WIND AND SUCKED UNDERNEATH MY CAR, CAUSING A FIRE. *TR
WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH THE DASH WARNING SYSTEM TURNED BRIGHT RED WITH THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE, BRAKE MALFUNCTION, STOP THE VEHICLE. SHE TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES BUT THE BRAKE SYSTEM HAD COMPLETELY FAILED, SHE HAD NO BRAKES. SHE LET OFF THE ACCELERATOR TO HELP SLOW THE VEHICLE AS SHE SLOWED DOWN SHE PULLED ONTO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD AND THE SLOWLY APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP AND SHIFTED IT INTO PARK. SHE THEN SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND CYCLED THE IGNITION KEY. THERE WAS NO LONGER THE RED WARNING LIGHT OR MESSAGE DISPLAYED AND WHEN TESTING THE BRAKES EVERYTHING WAS FUNCTIONING NORMAL AGAIN. SHE THEN SLOWLY DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME. I THEN RESEARCHED THE SYMPTOMS ONLINE AND FOUND MANY COMPLAINTS FOR THIS EXACT COMPLAINT. I FOUND WHERE THE SBC (SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL) UNIT HAD A SAFETY RECALL (2005070007) ALONG WITH AN EXTENDED WARRANTY OF 10 YEARS WITH UNLIMITED MILEAGE. I THEN CONTACTED MBUSA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS ADVISED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL MB DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE MB DEALER ON 7/14/14 TO BE CHECKED. THE DEALER SERVICE ADVISER ADVISE THAT THE SBC UNIT WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS GIVEN AN ESTIMATE OF 1851.00 TO COMPLETE THE REPAIRS DUE TO THE FACT THAT MY VEHICLE HAD PASSED THE 10 YEAR WARRANTY EXTENSION. MY VEHICLES IN SERVICE DATE IS 4/20/04, SO IT IS NOW PAST THE 10 YEAR WARRANTY BY 2 1/2 MONTHS. I THEN CONTACTED MBUSA FOR POST WARRANTY REVIEW ON 7/15/14. I WAS CONTACTED BY [XXX] FROM MBUSA ON 7/16/14 BUT WAS NOT ABLE TO MAKE ACTUAL CONTACT UNTIL 7/18.14. SHE INDICATED THAT SHE WOULD TO DISCUSS WITH THE LOCAL MB DEALER SERVICE MANAGER TO REVIEW THE NEEDED REPAIRS. [XXX] CALLED BACK ON MONDAY MORNING 7/21/14 TO ADVISE ME THAT AFTER TALKING TO THE SERVICE MANAGER ALONG WITH THE REGIONAL MANAGER NO FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE WOULD BE EXTENDED. ON MY WAY BACK FROM VIRGINIA, AFTER PARKING MY 2004 E500 BENZ CAR AT THE WELCOME CENTER IN WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, FOR A BREAK, A BIG POPPING NOISE WAS HEARD FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR. I THOUGHT IT WAS A FLAT TIRE, BUT I SAW THE FRONT OF THE CAR LOW (ALMOST TOUCH THE GROUND) THE ONLY THING IS THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE WAS NOT AS MUCH LOW AS THE DRIVER SIDE. THEN WHEN I STARTED THE CAR ENGINE, FROM THE CAR CONTROL PANEL, I RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING ERROR MESSAGE: "STOP, THE CAR IS TOO LOW TO DRIVE" AS A RESULT, I HAD TO GET THE CAR TOWED TO MY HOME FOR NEARLY $500.00. THIS IS THE 3RD TIME I HAVE EXPERIENCE THIS AIR SUSPENSION ISSUE; AND EVERY TIME THAT HAPPENED, I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED. THE TWO PREVIOUS TIME THE ISSUE HAPPENED, THE CAR WAS UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY; AND I DID NOT TO PAY ANY OUT OF POCKET MONEY TO GET THE ISSUE FIXED. NOW THAT THE CAR NO LONGER UNDER ANY EXTENDED WARRANTY, I KNOW IT'S GOING TO COST ME A LOT OF MONEY TO GET THE ISSUE FIXED BY THE DEALER. BASED ON MANY REPORTS I HAVE READ FROM PEOPLE WHO EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM, I, AS THEY DO, STRONGLY BELIEVE MERCEDES SHOULD HAVE A RECALL TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. AS IT IS COMMONLY AGREED, THE CAR IS TOO EXPENSIVE TO HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS CONSTANT HEADACHE THAT COMES WHEN IT WANTS TO WITH NO WARNING. LUCKILY FOR ME, DURING THE TIME OF THIS RECENT INCIDENT, MY CAR WAS NOT BEING DRIVEN. OTHERWISE, I HAVE NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT THE CAR WOULD GO OUT OF CONTROL AND THUS CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. GASOLINE SMELL IN GARAGE AND INSIDE THE CABIN. READ ONLINE STATING THAT RECALL ON E CLASS FOR 2004 ON GAS TANK LEAKS OR FAULTY FUEL SENDING UNIT. HOWEVER, MB DENIED THERE IS ANY RECALL LINK TO THE VIN OF MY VEHICLE. *JS
I FILLED UP MY CAR & NOTICED A GAS SMELL I WAS ON MY WAY TO ATLANTA FOR WORK I HAD TO INHALE STRONG GAS FUMES FOR MOST OF MY TRAVEL. WHEN I GOT THERE I TOOK MY CAR TO A SHOP & THEY DISCOVERED MY GAS TANK HAD A LEAK AND GAS WAS LEAKING NEAR BACK SEAT THEY GAVE A ME AN ESTIMATE OF ABOUT 2500 TO FIX I WAS TOLD THAT THIS HAD BEEN A KNOWN ISSUE FOR MERCEDES BUT NO RECALL YET WHICH I DON'T UNDERSTAND. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS NOT ONLY THE INHALATION OF THE FUMES & GAS LEAKING IN A CAR WITH ELECTRICAL WIRING & PARTS THAT GET EXTREMELY HOT. YOU CAN NOT PUT GAS INTO THE VEHICLE IT IS LIKE THERE IS NO VENT HOLES OR SOMETHING BECAUSE IT TOOK ME 1HOUR AND 20 MINUTES TO PUT GAS IN THE CAR BECAUSE THE PUMP KEPT CUTTING OFF LIKE THERE WAS AIR IN THE TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE A DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WAS NOT PERFORMED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 91,691.
REPLACED THE HEADLIGHT BULBS ON MY CAR. THE INSULATION ON THE 2 WIRES TO THE BULB CRUMBLED ON BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT WHEN I TOUCHED THE WIRES. WIRING IS DEFECTIVE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE THE WIRES COULD TOUCH CAUSING THE FUSE TO BLOW AND CAUSE THE HEADLIGHTS TO GO OUT WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. *TR

2004 MERCEDES BENZ E 350. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE REPAIRS. *SMD BOTH FUEL SENDING UNITS WERE LEAKING OIL, THE REAR SEAT CUSHION AND INSULATION WERE SOAKED IN FUEL, AND THE SPARK PLUGS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *JB
I LEFT MY HOME IN CINCINNATI, OH AT 8:25, WITH A 1/2 TANK OF GAS, DROVE ~ 3 MILES TO HWY126 AND MERGED TO 75S. I MOVED FROM THE RIGHT TO THE MIDDLE TO THE LEFT LANE. AFTER BEING AT 50 MPH ~ 2 MINUTES ON THE LEFT LANE, THE CAR SUDDENLY STOPPED. THE DASHBOARD WAS ALL LIT UP WITH WARNING SIGNS, CHECK ENGINE, BRAKES AND OIL. I PUT MY HAZARD LIGHT ON, PUT THE CAR IN PARK, TURNED THE KEY OFF, AND THEN BACK ON. THE SAME WARNING SIGNS CAME ON AND THE CAR DID NOT START. I CALLED MERCEDES ASSISTANCE WHO ADVISED TO CALL 911 AND THAT A TOW TRUCK WILL ARRIVE IN 1 HOUR. I CALLED 911 AND SURPRISINGLY GOT A VOICE MESSAGE THAT ALL OPERATORS ARE BUSY! A MINUTE LATER AN OPERATOR CAME ON THE LINE, SHE ASKED WHERE I WAS AND I TOLD HER THAT I WAS ON THE LEFT (HIGH SPEED LANE). SHE ASKED ME IF I WAS IN A BLACK MERCEDES. SHE INDICATED THAT A DISPATCHER IS ON THE WAY. AT 8:51 I CALLED AAA TO GET A TOWTRUCK EARLIER. THEY SAID THEY WILL COME IN 45 MIN. A CAR ASSISTANCE VAN CAME AND EVENTUALLY THE POLICE CAR. THEY STOPPED BEHIND MY CAR, AND TRIED TO TURN THE CAR ON AND WERE UNABLE TO, THEY ASKED ME TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL BUT THE GEAR WOULD NOT MOVE. THE POLICEMAN STOPPED THE TRAFFIC ON THE HIGHWAY, ASKED ME TO STEP OUT OF THE CAR WHILE HE MANAGED TO PUT THE GEAR ON NEUTRAL AND ASKED ME TO SIT BACK IN THE CAR AND STEER. THEY MANUALLY PUSHED THE CAR TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER BUT I WAS NOT ABLE TO STEER AS THE POWER STEERING WAS NOT WORKING. AT 9:18 THE AAA TRUCK CAME AND TOWED THE CAR TO THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP. THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A SUDDEN FAILURE OF THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR AND REPLACED IT FOR A CHARGE OF $463.46. I FOUND ON THE WEB THAT SEVERAL MERCEDES MODELS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM OCCUR BUT THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A RECALL. THE SUDDEN COMPLETE FAILURE OF A CAR IN THE MIDST OF RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC CREATING A MAJOR HAZARD TO ME AND OTHER DRIVERS NEEDS THE ATTENTION OF THE NHTSA. *TR

ABOUT A YEAR AGO I STARTED NOTICING A STRONG GAS SMELL AFTER FILLING MY TANK. I RECENTLY DECIDED TO RESEARCH IT AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD AND COMMONLY KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE E SERIES W211 MERCEDES CARS AND A SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW WITH THE FUEL SENDING UNIT/GAS TANK. MY DAUGHTER DRIVES THIS CAR NOW, AND I HAVE SERIOUS CONCERNS FOR HER INHALING CARCINOGENIC FUMES WHILE USING IT. I HAVE A 2004 MERCEDES BENZ E55 AND AFTER FILLING THE CAR WITH FUEL THERE IS A STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE. UPON ENTERING MY CLOSED GARAGE IN THE EARLY MORNING, I NOTICED A VERY STRONG GASOLINE SMELL. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MERCEDES REPAIR SHOP (NOT A DEALER) WHO INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS A LEAK IN THE FUEL SENDING UNIT AND THAT THIS WAS A DEVELOPING PROBLEM WITH E CLASS CARS. HE SAID THERE WERE CLASS ACTION SUITS AGAINST MERCEDES FOR THIS PROBLEM. HE SAID MERCEDES WOULD NOT ADMIT IT WAS A SAFETY PROBLEM. WELL, IT SEEMS LIKE A SAFELY PROBLEM TO ME! DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, 61 MPH, START RAINING HARD, POURING, CAR SLIPPED, TURNED AND HIT THE WALL ON THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY HEADS ON STRAIGHT. GOT HIT BY ANOTHER CAR ON THE SIDE, AFTER COUPLE OF TURNS, IT STOPPED ON THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY. COUPLE OF SIDE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED, THE MOST IMPORTANT ONES, THE FRONT AIR BAGS, DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE DID NOT DEPLOYED. *TR
THERE IS A VERY STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE FUMES EMANATING FROM THE AUTOMOBILE, ESPECIALLY OUTSIDE THE AUTO IT SEEMS FROM AROUND THE DRIVER'S SIDE AND REAR OF THE CAR. CAR MAKES AN UNUSUAL, LOUD, HUMMING NOISE FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR, UPON STARTING AND CONSTANTLY, NO MATTER THE SPEED. ON OCCASION, THERE IS NO NOISE, BUT MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, THE HUMMING IS PRESENT. THE NOISE EMANATES FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR, AND CAN BE HEARD ON THE INTERIOR AND FROM THE OUTSIDE. HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR INTO DEALERSHIP 3X FOR THE ISSUE, AND THEY CLAIM THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, AND CLAIM THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR THE LAST 10K MILES. HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED THE GAS SMELL ISSUE SINCE 35K MILES, AND LOST THE BRAKES RANDOMLY; BOTH ISSUES DESCRIBED BY OTHERS. *TR

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 56,000.
STRONG SMELL OF FUEL WHEN PARKED IN THE GARAGE. THIS HAS CONTINUED TO GROW WORSE, AND IS VERY NOTICEABLE AFTER FUELING. THERE APPEARS TO BE FUEL POOLING UNDER THE CAR AS WELL AS IN THE CABIN UNDER THE REAR SEATS. *TR
WHEN THE GAS TANK IS FILLED OVER 75% THERE IS A STRONG FUEL SMELL INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. IF I FILL LESS THAN 75% THERE IS NO PROBLEM. I HAVE EXPERIMENTED WITH FUEL LEVELS FROM FULL ( NOT TOPPING OFF ) DOWN TO THE 75% AND WILL HAVE THE FUEL SMELL. THE SMELL WILL CEASE WHENEVER THE LEVEL DROPS BELOW THE 75%. LEAK IS COMING FROM FUEL PUMP SEAL / GAS TANK. CALLED MULTIPLE DEALERS AND THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THIS IS COMMON PROBLEM. *TR
