2005 MERCEDES E320 STEERING COLUMN WIRING FAILURE ( 'CLOCK SPRING" & STEERING WIRING MODULE & SRS AIR BAG "FAILURE). PARTIAL REPAIR CORRECTED LOSS OF TURN SIGNALS, HORN AND SPEEDOMETER AT A COST TO ME ( OWNER OF $749.). ONE DAY LATER SRS (AIR BAG FAIL INDICATOR) CAME ON AGAIN. BACK TO DEALER WHO SAID A WIRING HARNESS IN THE STEERING COLUMN IS ALSO BAD & NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT AN ADDITIONAL FEE OF $516. BUT THAT THEY WOULD DO REPAIR FOR $429. ??? DID NOT AFFECT REPAIR YET. JUST NOTICED DEFECT INVESTIGATION?? WHAT SHOULD I DO ?? (FAILURE LIGHT FOR SRS IS STILL ON ETC.). CAN I RECOVER (PAST $749) AND FUTURE? ($516 / $429) COSTS??? *TR
MERCEDES BENZ E350 (2005). THE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS ALWAYS MALFUNCTION, IT HAS HAPPENED 4 TIMES IN A WEEK, MY CAR WAS TOOK LONGER DISTANCE TO COMPLETED STOP, AND ALSO DISPLAY A MESSAGE OF ' REDUCED BRAKING POWER DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL FULLY'. SO THAT I TOOK MY CAR TO MERCEDES BENZ DEALER TO CHECK, THE SERVICE ADVISOR GAVE ME THE ANSWER WAS NEED TO REPLACE THE PART NUMBER OF 005-431-81-12, AFTER THAT I WENT HOME AND CHECK ON INTERNET AND FOUND OUT THAT MERCEDES BENZ HAVE A RECALL (RECALL NUMBER 2004050014 & 2005070007) FOR THIS KIND OF BRAKE ISSUES, AND THEN I TOOK MY CAR BACK TO THE DEALER FOR CHECKING ONE MORE TIME, NOW THEY ARE GIVING ME ANOTHER STORY, THEY SAID NOTHING WRONG WITH THE PART LISTED ABOVE, BUT STILL NEED TO REPLACE ANOTHER PART (PART NUMBER IS 000-430-0712). ACCORDING TO THE OPERATOR'S MANUAL, E-GLASS SEDAN, USA EDITION B2006, PAGE 400, IT HAS MENTIONED THAT WHEN THE MESSAGE DISPLAY ON SCREEN OF REDUCED BRAKING POWER DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL FULLY', THAT MEANS IS THE ELECTROHYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM IS IN EMERGENCY OPERATION MODE. CONSIDERABLY GREATER BRAKE PEDAL FORCE IS REQUIRED AND THE STOPPING DISTANCE IS INCREASED. I DEEPLY BELIEVE THAT THE BRAKE PROBLEM MUST RELATED TO THOSE TWO RECALL. BUT THE MERCEDES BENZ WAS REFUSED TO REPAIR AS NO COST. PLEASE ADVISE ME THAT WHAT SHOULD I DO, SHALL I BRING MY CAR TO OUR MERCEDES BENZ DEALER. *TR
MERCEDES BENZ 2005 E500 FRONT AIRMATIC STRUT FAILURE. WHILE DRIVING THE CAR, THE PASSENGER FRONT END SUDDENLY DROP AND CAR VEER TO RIGHT SIDE. FORTUNATELY, THERE WASN'T ANY CAR ON THE RIGHT SIDE AND I AVOID THE CRASH. I STOP THE CAR ON THE SIDE OF ROAD AND FOUND OUT THE FRONT TIRE IS ALL THE WAY DOWN AND REAR DRIVER SIDE IS WAY UP. EXACT SAME FAILURE ON FRONT LEFT SIDE OCCURRED AROUND 35,000 MILES. *TR
AFTER FILLING UP THE CAR WITH GAS, A TERRIBLE ODOR OF GAS WOULD PERMEATE THE WHOLE INTERIOR OF THE CAR. ONCE THE CAR WAS PARKED AND YOU WALKED AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR YOU COULD SMELL GAS AS IF IT WAS LEAKING OUT OF THE CAR ONTO THE GROUND. I WOULD LOOK UNDER THE CAR AND NOT FIND ANY GAS DRIPPING ON THE GROUND. I ACTUALLY GOT SCARED WITH HOW BAD THE ODOR WAS THAT I TOOK THE CAR INTO MY LOCAL MERCEDES BENZ DEALER. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A DEFECTIVE PART ON THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK WHICH IS LOCATED UNDER THE REAR SEAT. I PAID TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. *JS
NOTICED A FUEL SMELL IN CABIN OF CAR AND IN CLOSED GARAGE. VERY STRONG WHEN RECENTLY FILLED UP. BROUGHT TO DEALER AND THEY FOUND LEAKING FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY ON DRIVERS SIDE. REQUIRED COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF FUEL SYSTEM. *TR
2005 MERCEDES BENZ E55 FUEL SENDING UNIT WAS SPRAYING GAS INTO COMPARTMENT WHICH IS UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER SIDE BACK PASSENGER SEAT. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE CAR ALREADY AND IT WAS REPLACED AND FAILED IN JUST 18MONTHS. BROUGHT THE CAR TO MERCEDES OF FREEHOLD AND THEY SAID "BEEN CHANGED UNDER RECALL" AND THEY CANT DO ANYTHING FOR ME NOW THAT THE NEW PART HAS FAILED. ENDED UP BUYING THE PART OUT OF POCKET AND REPLACING IT BECAUSE IT WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY ANY MORE. GAS BEING SPRAYED UNDER THE BACK PASSENGER SEAT IS NOT SAFE AT ALL! NOT TO MENTION MY CABIN WAS FILLED WITH GAS FUMES. *TR
FAULTY CAM AND CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR CAUSED ENGINE TO DIE (STALL) IN HEAVY NYC TRAFFIC IN THE CENTER LANE OF US HWY 9. DEALER INDICATED THAT THE CAM POSITION SENSOR 003-153-28-28 AND SENDER UNIT 004-153-69-28 MUST BE REPLACED, INDICATING THE CAUSE AS AN INTERNAL FAULT. DEALER'S SERVICE REP STATED THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM. THE FAILURE MODE IS THE SAME AS OCCURRED ON MY E 320 MODEL YEAR 2000. *TR
FIRST INCIDENT INVOLVED A STRONG FUEL ODOR COMING FROM INTERIOR OF CAR. TOOK CAR IN TO MB DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A LEAK THAT ALLOWED GAS TO SPILL OUT INTO THE CAR UNDER THE REAR SEATS. ALSO, THE FUEL PUMP AND SENDING UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THAT WAS DONE AT A $1400 COST OUT OF POCKET. WITHIN A YEAR, THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. THE DEALERSHIP HANDLED THE COST ON THIS AS THE PART WAS UNDER 1 YEAR WARRANTY. NOW, WITHIN THE SAME YEAR, THE SAME ISSUE HAS COME ABOUT. I SEARCHED THIS PROBLEM AND IT SEEMS THAT THEIR ARE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF CONSUMERS COMPLAINING OF THE SAME ISSUE. MB IS NEEDS TO FIX THIS ISSUE AND TAKE CARE OF THE COST. I AM NOT GOING TO PAY FOR THE SAME REPAIR 3 TIMES IN A 3 YEAR SPAN. NOT TO MENTION THE HEALTH, ENVIROMENTAL HAZARD, AND POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD THIS CAN CAUSE. *TR
"AIRBAG FAILURE" THE SRS LIGHT CAME ON MY 2005 MERCEDES E320 CDI. I PAID THE DEALER $100+ TO PULL THE CODES AND IT WAS THE AIRBAG CONNECTOR IN THE STEERING COLUMN. SINCE I WORK ON THE CAR MYSELF AND IT WAS JUST OUT OF OUT OF WARRANTY (30,000 MILES BUT 4 YEARS AND A COUPLE OF MONTHS). I BOUGHT ANOTHER CONNECTOR AND REPLACED IT MYSELF. I HAVE A 1992 MERCEDES AND IT HAS GOLD PINS ON THE AIRBAG CIRCUIT WHEREAS THIS 'NEW' CAR HAS GREY 'ZINC' PINS. *TR
VERY STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. REGARDING THE INTERIOR, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS A LEAKING SEAL AT THE FUEL SENDER UNIT. THE SEAL AT THE FUEL SENDER UNIT WAS REPLACED IN MARCH 2010. THIS PROBLEM RECURRED IN LATE 2013. IN MARCH 2014 THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY, FUEL PUMP LOCK RING AND FUEL SENDER SEAL WERE ALL REPLACED WITH NEW PARTS. THE PROBLEM HAS RE-APPEARED AGAIN. REGARDING THE EXTERIOR SMELL IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THERE IS A FUEL LEAK AT THE FUEL TANK VENT AREA. THIS WAS INITIALLY MANAGEABLE BY KEEPING THE FUEL LEVEL BELOW 3/4 FULL. IN THE LAST COUPLE MONTHS THIS PROBLEM EXISTS AT ANY FUEL LEVEL. THIS OVERWHELMING FUEL SMELL WILL COMPLETELY ENVELOP THE ENTIRE GARAGE WITHIN 15 -20 MINUTES AND POSSESSES AN EXTREME HEALTH RISK AND POTENTIAL FOR AN ACCIDENT TO HAPPEN. THE LEVEL OF EXTERIOR ODOR NOW IS SO HIGH THAT IT PENETRATES INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE, WHETHER THE VEHICLE IS STANDING STILL, IN MOTION AND WITH THE ENGINE ON OR OFF. FROM THE RESEARCH I HAVE DONE THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM IS COMMON TO THIS MODEL MERCEDES BENZ AND HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION OR COMMUNICATION FROM MERCEDES BENZ AT ANY TIME REGARDING THIS ISSUE. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! *TR
THE FUEL TANK, PUMP AND SENDER STARTED LEAKING. FUEL HAD POOLED ON TOP OF SENDER UNIT. THIS MADE MY DAUGHTER IN THE BACK SEAT SO ILL WE HAD TO TAKE HER TO URGENT CARE. I CALLED A DEALER. BOUGHT "IMPROVED SEALS FOR THE SENDER AND PUMP. THE PROBLEM IS NOT GONE. NOW THE DEALER IS TELLING ME IT COULD BE $1500-$2500 TO REPLACE THE TANK AND SENDER/PUMP. IT IS UNREAL THAT A POTENTIALLY LETHAL FUEL LEAK IS WIDELY KNOWN ABOUT ALL THE 2003-2008 E CLASS MERCEDES AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE. DOES SOMEBODY HAVE TO BURN TO DEATH IN A FIERY CRASH BEFORE MERCEDES OR THE NHTSA GETS SERIOUS ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THE CAR HAS HAD TO BE PARKED. I AM STILL MAKING PAYMENTS ON IT AND HAVE TO GO BUY ANOTHER CAR THAT IS NOT A ROLLING FUEL EXPLOSION WAITING TO HAPPEN. I AM BEGGING THE NHTSA FOR THE SAFETY OF HUNDREDS OF THOUSAND E CLASS OWNERS TO HAVE MERCEDES RECALL THESE CARS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE SBS SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT CAME ON ALONG WITH LOSS OF MOST BRAKING ABILITY. I MANAGED TO STOP THE CAR, TURN AROUND AND RETURN ABOUT 8 MILES TO MY HOME IN "LIMP HOME" MODE. THERE WAS NO WARNING WHATSOEVER. I THEN CALL THE MB DEALERSHIP WHICH SENT A TRUCK TO PICK UP THE CAR. THE SBS HYDRAULIC UNIT HAD FAILED AND WAS REPLACED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY AT NO COST. WHILE I AM NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT THE COST (NONE), THE FAILURE COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WITH THE LOSS OF BRAKE ABILITY. I TAKE ROAD TRIPS TO THE COLORADO MOUNTAINS AND IF THIS HAD HAPPENED THERE, I COULD HAVE SUFFERED A FATAL INJURY. THIS SYSTEM IS DEFECTIVELY ENGINEERED AND SHOULD BE REPLACED ON ALL MERCEDES CARS SO EQUIPPED. *TR
Several times if the vehicle is not driven in a day or two the battery would be dead.I had to replace the battery twice in 2 years. I now receive a message (check battery) every time I start the vehicle. I bought a battery charger that I keep with me all the time. Once a month I put the vehicle on a battery charger, and if I’m not going to use it for a week or more,I put it on a trickle charger. I own 2 other vehicle and none of them need this type of treatment.
MY CAR IS E500, 2005. IT IS 42,333 MILES BUT IT IS LEAKING RIGHT ENGINE MOTOR MOUNT. WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? DOES IT CAUSE INJURIES OR DEATH? IS IT DEFECT FROM MERCEDES-BENZ? DOES MERCEDES-BENZ NEED TO FIX WITHOUT CHARGE? PLEASE ADVISE. THANK YOU *TR
DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN AN ALERT THAT THE SRS SYSTEM HAD DETECTED A FAILURE AND LIT UP ON THE GAUGE CLUSTER. HAD A AN INDEPENDENT MERCEDES SHOP READ CODES WHICH WERE: FAILURE OF SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM ON A 2005 MERCEDES E500 WAGON. THE "SRS" LIGHT CAME ON FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO A MERCEDES DEALER FOR REPAIR. THE WIRING HARNESS IN THE STEERING COLUMN THAT SENDS AND RECEIVES DATA TO DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG 1 CAUSED A FAILURE IN WHAT IS KNOWN AS THE SQUIB FOR THE AFFECTED AIRBAG. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH THE AIRBAG WOULD NOT DEPLOY. THEY EVEN KNEW ABOUT IT AND HAD A BULLETIN BUT NO RECALL SO I WAS CHARGED ABOUT $735 FOR THE REPAIR. I WAS TOTALLY SHOCKED THAT A BRAND THAT PRIDES ITSELF IN SAFETY TECHNOLOGY WOULD NOT STAND BEHIND THE PRODUCT AND FIX A KNOWN ISSUE ON A GOODWILL CAMPAIGN THAT COULD BE A POTENTIALLY FATAL PARTS FAILURE. THE PROBLEM IS SO COMMON THAT THEY EVEN HAVE A KIT FOR THE WIRING HARNESS FIX. AFTER DOING A LOT READING ON MANY MERCEDES INFO SITES I FOUND OUT IT IS AFFECTING A POTENTIAL OF OVER 100,000 E CLASS CARS AND THE CL CLASS CARS THAT SHARE THE CHASSIS AND MANY COMPONENTS. I AM GLAD I GOT IT FIXED BECAUSE I KNOW HOW MUCH SAFER THE CAR IS WITH A FUNCTIONAL AIRBAG. *TR
AFTER FILLING THE VEHICLES TANK WITH FUEL, THE VEHICLE WILL EMIT A STRONG FUEL ODOR ON THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR WHEEL WELL AS IF THE FUEL TANK WAS LEAKING FUEL. AFTER INSPECTION IS WAS DEEMED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS FAULTY AND WAS INDEED LEAKING FUEL WHEN FULL. THE ISSUE HAS NOT YET BEEN FIXED DUE TO THE EXTREME COST OF REPLACING THE FUEL TANK AT THE DEALER EVEN THOUGH THEY ADMIT THAT THE PART WAS KNOWN TO BE INCORRECTLY MANUFACTURED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E55. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A STRONG FUEL ODOR INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHILE PARKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHERE THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL SENDING UNIT WAS LEAKING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNAVAILABLE.
POOR VISIBILITY AT NIGHT SECONDARY TO LIGHT LENS FOGGING DETERIORATION OF PLASTIC LENS MATERIAL NECESSITATING USING HIGH BEAMS ALL THE TIME. *TR
WHEN EVER YOU FILL THE GAS TANK COMPLETELY UP IT LEAKS FUEL, HAVE RETURNED VEHICLE TO DEALER AND THEY CAN NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. *TR
I TOOK MY CAR 2005 E500 FOR REGULAR MAINTENANCE AT THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE BALL BEARINGS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED IN JULY 2011. THEN AFTER CHECKING EVERYTHING OUT, THE DEALER TOLD ME THE FUEL RING UNDER THE SEAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. COST USD 600. ALSO THERE WAS GASOLINE SEEPING OUT OF CAR ONTO THE DRIVEWAY WHEN CAR WAS PARKED. I STARTED SMELLING GASOLINE SMELL IN MARCH 2012. I TOOK THE CAR AGAIN TO THE DEALERSHIP IN JULY 2012 AND THIS TIME THEY REPLACED THE FUEL SYSTEM. COST USD 2100. THERE WERE PUDDLES OF GASOLINE IN MY GARAGE AFTER THE SERVICE. I WAS TOLD THERE MIGHT BE GASOLINE SMELL. AFTER THE SMELL LINGERED AFTER EVERY FILLUP I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN WANTED TO CHARGE ME USD 3000 FOR THE FUEL LEAK BUT I TOLD THEM I JUST FIXED THE FUEL LEAK PROBLEM. THIS WAS IN SEPT 2012. THIS TIME THE DEALERSHIP DIDN'T CHARGE ME ANYTHING. I AGAIN TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THAT CAME ON IN SEPT 2013 TO MERCEDES BENZ IN GRAPEVINE, TX. I WAS TOLD THERE IS A LEAK IN THE FUEL TANK AND THE COST IS USD 2115. I TOLD THE DEALER ABOUT THE NHTSA INVESTIGATION, CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FOR THE FUEL SYSTEM ON MERCEDES E500 VEHICLES AND THE SERVICE ADVISOR, MATT PINECREST, TOLD ME THE CASE WAS SETTLED AND MERCEDES WON. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A FALSEHOOD. THIS PROBLEM HAS NOW TAKEN AN EMOTIONAL TOLL ON ME SINCE I CAN'T DRIVE MY CAR PROPERLY WITHOUT WORRYING. THERE WASN'T ACTUALLY A PARTICULAR INCIDENT, PER SE. MY COMPLAINT IS ABOUT THE FUEL TANK IN MY CAR LEAKING. WHEN I FILL THE CAR AL THE WAY UP WITH FUEL, GAS LEAKS OUT ONTO THE SUSPENSION, UNDERCARRIAGE AND THE GROUND. THIS IS DUE TO A STRESS FRACTURE THAT HAS DEVELOPED ON THE TOP OF THE TANK BY THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. A VERY HIGH NUMBER OF OTHER OWNERS OF THIS MAKE, MODEL AND RANGE OF YEARS (2003 - 2006) OF MY CAR HAVE THIS PROBLEM. SRS INDICATOR LAMP ON. THE SRS LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED AND DASH DISPLAY REPORTS COMPLETE FAILURE OF ALL SRS SYSTEMS. ERROR CODE 9103, DEFECTIVE CONNECTOR AND WIRE, AIRBAG LINE TO STEERING COLUMN, CAUSED ENTIRE SRS SHUTDOWN. *TR
FUEL LEAK IN SENDING UNIT ABOVE GAS TANK. VERY STRONG SMELL OF GAS IN CAR AND GAS LEAKING IN MY GARAGE. TOOK IT TO MERCEDES BENZ OF COLORADO SPRINGS AND IT TOOK THREE VISITS TO FIX THE PROBLEM IN 2009. NOW 9/14/14 HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH STRONG SMELL OF FUEL IN THE CAR AND FUEL LEAKING IN THE SENDING UNIT ALL THE WAY TO THE FOAM OF THE BACK SEAT. *TR
THE FUEL TANK ON THIS VEHICLE LEAKS WHENEVER THE TANK IS FILLED TO THE TOP. THE LEAK OCCURS INDEPENDENTLY OF WHETHER THE CAR IS DRIVEN OR PARKED (ENGINE OFF). ENOUGH FUEL LEAKS OUT THAT IT RUNS DOWN ADJACENT COMPONENTS, TO THE CAR'S UNDERCARRIAGE PANELING, AND THROUGH A WEEP HOLE ON THE CAR'S PLASTIC PANELING, AND FINALLY ONTO THE GROUND. THE NOXIOUS ODOR OF RAW FUEL IS PLAINLY APPARENT IN AND AROUND THE CAR WHENEVER IT'S LEAKING. THE ONLY THING THAT KEEPS THE PROBLEM FROM OCCURRING IS TO NOT FILL THE TANK TO THE TOP. THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT WHILE I'VE OWNED IT. I BOUGHT IT IN 2009 WITH APPROXIMATELY 50,000 MILES ON IT. THE PROBLEM EXISTED WITH THE ORIGINAL FUEL TANK, AND FUEL SENDING UNIT THAT WAS INSTALLED ON THE CAR WHEN IT WAS BEING ASSEMBLED. SINCE THEN I'VE REPLACED THE FUEL SENDING UNIT AND FUEL SENDING UNIT GASKET IN HOPES OF CURING THE PROBLEM. THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE REPLACEMENT FUEL SENDING UNIT IS NON-OEM. THE REPLACEMENT GASKET IS OEM. *TR
DURING THE PAST 2-3 YEARS, MY WIFE AND I BEGAN TO NOTICE A GASOLINE VAPORS IN OUR CLOSED GARAGE IMMEDIATELY AFTER OUR 2005 E320 HAD BEEN REFUELED. WE ALSO NOTICED THAT AFTER A FEW DAYS DRIVING, THE GASOLINE VAPORS, DIMINISHED. MORE RECENTLY, IT ALSO SEEMED THAT THE GASOLINE ODOR HAS BEEN STRONGER AFTER REFUELING. IN ADDITION, MY WIFE, WHILE DRIVING THIS CAR, HAS RECENTLY BEGUN TO SMELL GASOLINE VAPORS FROM INSIDE THE CAR, AND WHILE DRIVING. DURING A RECENT VISIT TO MY DEALER FOR SERVICING, I ASKED THEM TO LOOK INTO THE ISSUE. THEY REMOVED THE REAR SEAT, FILLED THE FUEL TANK, AND THEN DISCOVERED GASOLINE LEAKING AND PUDDLING AROUND THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, THE DEALER TOLD ME TO EITHER 1) REPLACE THE ORIGINAL FUEL TANK WITH A SLIGHTLY REDESIGNED TANK, OR 2) WHEN REFUELING, FILL THE GAS TANK TO A LEVEL LESS THAN COMPLETELY FULL. THEY ADMITTED THAT THE EXISTING DESIGN PROBABLY CONTRIBUTED TO THE LEAKING. THE DEALER STATED ALSO THAT A REPLACEMENT FUEL TANK WOULD COST US AROUND $2,600 AND THE COST WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER ANY VEHICLE WARRANTY, INCLUDING THE EMISSIONS WARRANTY. THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED NEW IN DEC 2004 AND NOW HAS 75000 MI. IN ANOTHER 2 WEEKS, IT WILL BE 8 YEARS OLD. MY GREATEST CONCERN IS THAT THE GAS TANK DESIGN AND SUBSEQUENT GASOLINE LEAKAGE COULD CONTRIBUTE TO A VEHICLE FIRE AND SERIOUS BODILY INJURY IF THE VEHICLE WERE INVOLVED IN A COLLISION. THIS IS NOT TO MINIMIZE THE IMPACT OF HAVING TO BREATH GASOLINE VAPORS THAT ARE INSIDE THE VEHICLE AND WHILE DRIVING IT. ON OR ABOUT JUNE 22, 2009, I WAS DRIVING HOME ON INTERSTATE 64 WHEN THE LEFT FRONT SPRING BROKE FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I DID NOT HIT A POT HOLE AND THE CAR WAS NOT INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS CAUSED THE LEFT FRONT SHOCK TO IMMEDIATELY BREAK. THE FRONT END OF THE CAR FELL ONTO THE TIRE WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH. I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED. THE MERCEDES DEALER COULD OFFER NO EXPLANATION FOR THIS PROBLEM. I CORRESPONDED BY E-MAIL WITH 2 MERCEDES REPRESENTATIVES WHO TOLD ME THEY COULD DO NOTHING FOR ME BECAUSE THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE WARRANTY WAS OUT AT 50,000.00 MILES AND THE CAR HAD APPROX. 56,000.00 MILES AT THE TIME. I EXPLAINED THAT I KNEW THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY WHEN I CALLED, HOWEVER, I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A PREMATURE FAILURE THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. THE MERCEDES REPS TOLD ME I PURCHASED THE CAR AS A USED VEHICLE AND THEY COULD DO NOTHING AND HOPED THAT MY CONFIDENCE IN MERCEDES WOULD BE RESTORED AS I CONTINUED DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THE CAR WOULD NOT BE SAFE UNLESS I REPLACED THE SPRING AND SHOCK ON BOTH SIDES. THE REPAIR BILL WAS JUST UNDER $1,800.00. *TR

IN 2009 WE STARTED TO NOTICE THE SMELL OF GASOLINE COMING INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT AND STRONGLY FROM THE LEFT READ WHEEL WELL FOLLOWING FILLING THE TANK WITH GAS. AT TIMES THE SMELL OF GASOLINE WOULD BE SO STRONG THAT THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE PARKED OUTSIDE OF THE GARAGE AND LEFT OPEN TO VENT THE INTERIOR. IN ALL, THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED FOR THIS ISSUE WITH THE FUEL SENDING SEALS OR THE FUEL SENDING UNIT 9 TIMES. ALL INSTANCES, SAVE ONE, WERE REPORTED BY THE DEALER TO BE THE SEALS AS THE CULPRIT. I HAVE ALL OF MY SERVICE DOCUMENTATION ON THESE SERVICE EVENTS. RECENTLY, AS A RESULT OF A "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT, MY MECHANIC FOUND AGAIN THAT THE SEAL WAS LEAKING. THIS COMPLAINT IS IN REFERENCE TO NHTSA ACTION #PE12001. DURING 2009, AT APPROXIMATELY 31K MILES ON THE VEHICLE (2005 MERCEDES BENZ E55), A STRONG FUEL SMELL/ODOR WAS EVIDENT IN THE PASSENGER CABIN. THE SMELL WAS STRONGEST AT THE REAR SEAT DRIVER'S SIDE. THIS ISSUE WAS BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF A SERVICE ADVISOR AT A MERCEDES BENZ AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER. AN OPEN RECALL WAS INDICATED TO REPLACE THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE FUEL SENDER UNITS IN THE FUEL TANK, LOCATED BELOW THE REAR SEAT. THE RECALL WAS PERFORMED AT 31,300 MILES AND WHILE THE FUEL TANK WAS NOT REPLACED, THE PROBLEM DID APPEAR TO BE RESOLVED. DURING 2012, AT APPROXIMATELY 50K MILES, THE SAME STRONG FUEL SMELL/ODOR IN THE PASSENGER CABIN REOCCURRED, SUBSEQUENT TO THE FACTORY WARRANTY EXPIRATION DATE. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION, AFTER REMOVING THE REAR SEAT BOTTOM AND DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE ACCESS PANELS, IT WAS IMMEDIATELY APPARENT FUEL HAD COLLECTED/POOLED IN A CAVITY ON TOP OF THE FUEL TANK WHERE THE DRIVER SIDE FUEL SENDER UNIT IS LOCATED--ULTIMATELY CONFIRMING SOME TYPE OF FUEL LEAK. WHEN INSPECTING THE PASSENGER SIDE FUEL SENDER UNIT, THE AREA APPEARED TO BE DRY WITH NO FUEL LEAKING ON THAT SIDE. AFTER THIS INSPECTION WAS COMPLETED, THE POOLED FUEL ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE FUEL TANK WAS REMOVED AND THE SURROUNDING AREA WAS CLEANED AND DRIED BEFORE REINSTALLING THE ACCESS PANELS AND REAR SEAT BOTTOM. CURRENTLY AT 54K MILES, THE FUEL LEAK HAS BEEN SOMEWHAT LESSENED/AVOIDED BY ONLY FILLING THE FUEL TANK TO NO MORE THAN 3/4 CAPACITY (OR, ABOUT 15 GALLONS OUT OF 21). THERE REMAINS, HOWEVER, A SLIGHT FUEL SMELL/ODOR REOCCURRING DURING INSTANCES WHEN THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN PARKED OUTSIDE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS IN THE SUMMER HEAT. THE COMPUTER WAS REPROGRAMMED ON JANUARY 12, 2009. THE CONTACT NOTICED A FUEL SMELL EVERY TIME HE ADDED FUEL TO THE VEHICLE AFTER THE DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE COMPUTER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER ON MAY 6, 2010. THE DEALER REPLACED THE FUEL SEAL IN THE FUEL TANK SENDING UNIT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER ON JANUARY 31, 2011 AND THE DEALER ADVISED HIM THAT THE FUEL TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. MY VEHICLE HAS HAD A SERIOUS STEERING PROBLEM TO THE RIGHT FROM DAY 1 OF DRIVING VEHICLE OFF THE DEALERS LOT. IT HAS BEEN IN THE SERVICE DEPT. FOR 5 TO 6 TIME FOR THE STEERING PROBLEM AND PULLING TO THE RIGHT. THE DEALERSHIP LOCATED ME ANOTHER VEHICLE A MONTH AFTER PURCHASE,. I TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE WITH THE SALESMAN, HE PUT MY NAME IN THE WINDOW OF THE UPGRADED VEHICLE AND THE PICKUP DATE. WHEN I WENT BACK THE NEXT DAY TO PICK UP THE VEHICLE, THE SALESMAN AND SERVICE MANAGER WOULD NOT LET ME HAVE THE UPGRADED VEHICLE AS PROMISED THE DAY BEFORE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E320. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER REFUELING, THERE WAS A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY ADVISED HIM THAT THE FUEL TANK FILL FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED THREE TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 140,000. *TR
2005 MERCEDES 350 CDI - BRAKE FAILURE! IN FACT, CAR ACCELERATED WITH PRESSING BRAKE PEDAL DOWN. BRAKE PROBLEMS ON THIS MODEL HAVE BEEN SUBJECT OF PREVIOUS NHTSA RECALL ADVISORY (PLEASE SEE HTTP://WWW.MOTORTREND.COM/CARS/2005/MERCEDES_BENZ/E_CLASS/E320_CDI_SEDAN/616/RECALLS/). THIS CAR SERVICED WAS REGULARLY AT MERCEDES DEALERSHIP - BEFORE AND AFTER INCIDENTS. THERE IS NO DOCUMENTATION OF FIXING THIS PROBLEM BEFORE OR AFTER RECENT EVENT WHICH LED TO AN MVC. CORPORATE MERCEDES HAS BEEN RUDE AND RECOMMENDED WE TAKE THIS MATTER TO COURT IF WE WISH THE CAR PROPERLY SERVICED. REPRESENTATIVE 'JITEN' REFUSED TO GIVE HIS LAST NAME AND REFUSED TO GIVE A COMPLAINT NUMBER. COULD THIS CAR BE UNSAFE? MERCEDES IS NOT BEING HELPFUL AT ALL. WHAT TO DO? PLEASE HELP. *TR
WE HAVE OWNED THIS CAR SINCE JULY 2007 MB CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED WITH 14,000 MILES.THE CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP MANY MANY TIMES OVER THE YEARS FOR FUEL SMELL. THEY HAVE REPLACED THE SEALS, FUEL PUMPS, FUEL LINE CONNECTIONS, UPPER EVAPORATOR SYSTEM CONNECTOR,FUEL FILTER MODULE ASSEMBLY,FUEL LEVEL SENSOR SEALS,LEAKING AROUND PRESSURE SENSOR SEAM, FUEL TANK AND STILL THE PROBLEM PERSIST TILL THIS DAY. I HAVE HAD MB EXTENDED WARRANTY TILL 2011 AND ALL WORK WAS PERFORMED AT THE MB DEALERSHIP. *TR
AFTER FILLING THE GAS TANK TO FULL THERE ARE GAS FUMES IN THE AIR AROUND THE CAR. THEREFORE WE DO NOT FILL TO FULL. WE JUST SAW NEWS ARTICLE ABOUT FUEL TANK PROBLEMS WITH MB. *TR
FROM A STOP THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE BEYOND AN IDLE, DESPITE DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR. IT HAPPENED ONCE ON THE HIGHWAY AFTER A TOLLBOOTH AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WHILE MERGING. IT ALSO HAPPENED IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD AFTER A STOP SIGN. PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT. DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE PROBLEM AND DID NOT MAKE ANY REPAIRS. *TR
I FILLED MY TANK WITH GAS DROVE IT HOME AND PARKED IT IN MY GARAGE. LATER I WENT OUT TO THE GARAGE AND SMELLED A VERY STRONG ODOR OF GAS. I THOUGHT MY HUSBAND MIGHT HAVE LEFT A CONTAINER OF GAS IN THE GARAGE. A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER I WENT TO A FRIENDS HOME IN THE COUNTRY SIDE AND NOTICED AN INTENSE SMELL OF FUEL IN MY CAR. I THOUGHT SOMEHOW MAYBE MY HUSBAND TRANSPORTED GAS IN A CONTAINER IT THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR, BUT HE HAD NOT. I HAD TO CALL ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCE BECAUSE ON THE RETURN TRIP NOT ONLY WAS THE GAS SMELL MORE INTENSE, BUT I HAD A FLAT TIRE. IMMEDIATELY ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCE CAME CHANGED THE TIRE AND TOOK US HOME AND DROVE THE CAR TO THE MB DEALERSHIP. I PAID FOR A NEW TANK TO BE INSTALLED AND THEY PAID TO REMOVE THE PADDING AND LINER AND REPLACE IT FROM THE SEAT BEHIND THE TANK. FROM 2010 TO 2014 THREE MORE EVENTS OF FUEL SMELL IN AND OUT OF THE CAR AFTER FILLING THE TANK HAVE SINCE OCCURRED AND REQUIRED REPAIR. ONCE IT WAS SAID TO BE THE LINES OR INJECTION SYSTEM. AFTER THE LINES WERE REPAIRED THOUGH THE SMELL REMAINED AND THIS WAS SOLVED BY PLACING A NEW TANK AGAIN IN OCTOBER 2012. THE LATEST LEAK OCCURRED JUST AS THE FIRST, AND ON NOVEMBER 7, 2014 A NEW TANK HAS NOT BEEN PLACED YET. THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR IS INTOLERABLY CAUSTIC WITH GAS FUMES. I AM OUT OF WARRANTY AND AM DRIVING AN EXPLOSIVE TIME BOMB FILLED WITH CARCINOGENIC PETROLEUM. THESE CARS NEED A RECALL. I SEE I AM NOT THE ONLY TO SUBMIT A COMPLAINT FOR THIS DANGEROUS HAZARD. THE TANK FUEL LEAK FOR THE S CLASS AND E CLASS SPANNING 2003-2008 IS DISCUSSED ON MERCEDES BENZ FORUMS, AS WELL. *TR
