The car brakes suddenly by itself just after the ESB/ABS lights come on along with an exclamation point (!). This has happened randomly at least 4 times since we purchased the car. Once at high speeds on the highway. It appears this problem is common with other owners of Mercedes 2001-2002 ML's. According to the forums below, the problem seems to be a "YAW RATE SENSOR" malfunction or defect. My Mercedes mechanic saw no error codes for this component and it seem extremely expensive (forum states part is $3000) to replace. There is a serious defect in the YAW rate sensors in these Mercedes ML W163's. Thank God I was driving down a secluded road and nobody was behind me, but my vehicles brakes locked up, on their own, even with my foot on the accelerator pedal, with no warning lights or warning signals. I have no error codes, and my vehicle is well maintained. There are many many people that are having the same issue with their Mercedes ML's. Some people have experienced this happening to them at freeway speeds. The YAW rate sensors are at fault, and send a signal to the ABS pump which in turn locks up the brakes without even touching the brake pedal! This is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS to everyone in the vehicle, and to ANY other vehicle in the area. People can DIE! Again.. This is a terrible defective function of a sensor that will spontaneously apply the brakes fully to lock up automatically with no persuasion from the driver. It is extremely dangerous and can cause fatal injuries. This has been researched thru many Mercedes forums including benzworld.org, mbworld.org, Mercedesforum.com, and ml w163 Facebook forum, all of which many ML owners have experienced the braking system lockup, and in some cases accidents have occurred. Another unfortunate issue in this happening, is that the brake lights do not light up when this sudden braking happens due to the YAW rate sensor malfunction. If there is a vehicle behind a Mercedes ML when this sudden braking occurs, there is NO WARNING LIGHTS, and can cause a serious accident and injury or death! Many people, including myself, do not feel safe behind the wheel of our Mercedes ML's for fear of the brakes locking up in their own because of this poorly programmed default function of a possible faulty YAW rate sensor. This is the worst default function to ever have a vehicle do. I now steer clear of other Mercedes ML's in the road knowing they can automatically lock their brakes for no apparent reason. Please research this and take action!
BRAKES APPLIED ON THEIR OWN WITHOUT PEDAL PRESSURE WHILE CAR WAS MOVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED. FRONT BRAKES WERE SMOKING BY THE TIME I FOUND A SAFE PLACE TO STOP OFF THE 4-LANE ROAD ON A SIDE ROAD. REAR BRAKES SEEMED HOT, BUT NOT SMOKING. NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. IMMEDIATELY BEFORE THIS HIGHWAY EVENT, CAR HAD JUST BEEN TRAVELING AROUND 35 MPH ON HILLY SIDE ROADS WITH STEEP ASCENTS AND DESCENTS. THIS IS THE FOURTH TIME BRAKES HAVE SELF-APPLIED IN A SIMILAR MANNER. AFTER SECOND EVENT, DEALER EXAMINED CAR BUT COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM OR FIND ANY FAULTS ON COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS. WHEN BRAKES COOL, CAR RESTARTS WITHOUT BRAKES COMING ON. BRAKE PADS AND SENSORS WERE REPLACED 6,000 MILES EARLIER; SIGNIFICANT BRAKE DRAG WAS PRESENT FOR AROUND TWO HUNDRED MILES AFTER THAT REPAIR; DEALER SAID BRAKES WERE SELF-ADJUSTING AND DECLINED TO EXAMINE CAR AT THAT TIME. IT WAS ABOUT 4,000 MILES AFTER BRAKE PAD/SENSOR REPLACEMENT THAT THE SELF-BRAKING PROBLEM STARTED.

WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH MY ABS LIGHT SHOWN UP AND ALL 4 TIRES LOCK UP. ALMOST CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. *TR
I RECENTLY TOOK MY 2002 ML320 INTO MY LOCAL MERCEDES REPAIR SHOP (FAIRFIELD, CT) TO HAVE SOME WORK DONE. WHEN I COLLECTED THE VEHICLE AND AS I WAS LEAVING, THE ESP/BAS, ETS AND ABS LIGHTS CAME ON SIMULTANEOUSLY. THIS HAD HAPPENED ON MANY PREVIOUS OCCASIONS OVER THE YEARS AND EVERY TIME I HAD MENTIONED IT TO THE MERCEDES SERVICE PEOPLE THEY HAVE SAID THAT THIS IS A COMMON FAULT AND THAT I SHOULD TURN OFF THE ENGINE, WAIT AND THEN RE-START AND THIS SHOULD CLEAR THE ISSUE. THIS HAD MOSTLY WORKED UNTIL THIS RECENT OCCASION. INSTEAD IT THE LIGHTS REMAINED ON AND SO I IMMEDIATELY DROVE THE CAR BACK INTO THE REPAIR SHOP. THE REPAIR SHOP KEPT THE VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL DAYS TRYING TO ISOLATE THE CAUSE. EVENTUALLY THEY FOUND SOME SERIOUS CORROSION IN THE ESP/HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT. THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS RELATED TO AN ACCIDENT THE CAR WAS INVOLVED IN AND SUGGESTED I CONTACT MY INSURER. THE INSURANCE ASSESSOR EXAMINED THE CAR IN DETAIL AND CONCLUDED THAT THE FAULT WAS ENTIRELY UNRELATED AND THEIR DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT THE DESIGN OF THE UNIT WAS FLAWED. IN OTHER WORDS THIS IS A DESIGN FAULT. THEY SAID THAT GIVEN THAT THIS UNIT CONTROLS THE ENTIRE BRAKING SYSTEM, ANY FAILURE COULD BE CATASTROPHIC. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO AUTHORIZE THE REPAIR. HOWEVER, I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THE UNIT HAS BEEN REPLACED AT A COST OF NEARLY $2,400 BUT IF AS THE GEICO INSURANCE ASSESSOR BELIEVES, THIS IS A DESIGN FAULT THEN THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN. ADDITIONALLY, IT SEEMS THAT THE UNIT HAD BEEN CORRODED FOR SOME TIME AND COULD HAVE FAILED AT ANY TIME BUT BECAUSE IT IS SUCH A COMMON OCCURRENCE FOR THESE WARNING LIGHTS TO COME ON, NO-ONE INVESTIGATED THE ISSUE WITH THE UNIT UNTIL RECENTLY. MY RELATED CONCERN IS THAT THE UNIT COULD FAIL AT ANY TIME AND THIS POSSIBILITY PLACES ME AND MY FAMILY IN POTENTIAL DANGER. MERCEDES DECLINED TO TAKE ANY ACTION. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MERCEDES BENZ ML55. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKE STABILITY CONTROL ACTIVATED WITHOUT WARNING, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO IDLE ABRUPTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WHICH CONCLUDED THAT THE YAW RATE CENSOR FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RELATED RECALLS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT AWARE OF THE FAILURE. NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 70,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
2002 MERCEDES BENZ ML 500. CONSUMER WRITES REGARDING VEHICLE BRAKE FAILURE *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE BRAKES FAILED ON THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE BRAKE LINES LEAKING. *JB
THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM WOULD ENGAGE WITHOUT DRIVER ACTIVATION. THE BAS/ESP LIGHT WOULD COME ON WITHOUT ANY REASON EITHER. ONE DAY I WAS ON THE FREEWAY WHEN IT HAPPENED AND SUDDENLY THE BREAKS WERE ENGAGED AT 73 MPH WHEN I WAS ON THE FAST LANE AND OTHER VEHICLES FOLLOWING AT ABOUT THE SAME SPEED. MY LEG WAS ON THE ACCELERATOR GASSING TO CONTINUE, BUT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM FORCED THE CAR TO ALMOST A STOP - ABOUT 10MPH, BEFORE THE BREAKS DISENGAGED AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO MOVE (THAT IS ACCELERATE AGAIN). I ALMOST GOT RAMMED BY THE VEHICLE BEHIND ME. I TOOK IT TO MECERDES BENZ DEALERSHIP IN GEORGE TOWN TX. THEY SAID IT WAS UNEQUAL SIZE TIRES THAT WAS THE PROBLEM. I CHANGED THE TIRES TO ALL NEW AND THE SAME SIZE TRIES AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE GEORGETOWN DEALERSHIP AGAIN. THIS TIME THEIR DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT THE LATERAL ACCELERATION AND YAW SENSORS WERE FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED FOR $1250.00. WHAT I DESCRIBED ABOVE WAS JUST AN EPISODE. IT HAPPEN FIRST WHEN MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR. IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL OTHER TIMES BEFORE I FINALLY TOOK IT FOR REPAIRS. I HAVE PACKED THE CAR FOR NOW BECAUSE I HAVE OTHER CARS TO USE AND THE PROBLEM HAS NOT STILL BEEN FIXED. NHTSA SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL. *TR
[MERCEDES BENZ ML 320 2002] WHILE DRIVING EAST ON ROUTE 80 AT 65 MPH AND APPROACHING THE TOLL BOOTHS OF THE GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE, I TAPPED MY BRAKES TO DISENGAGE MY SPEED CONTROL. THE SPEED CONTROL DID NOT SHUT DOWN. I HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL SEVERAL MORE TIMES HARDER AND HARDER, BUT THE SPEED CONTROL STAYED IN CONTROL. I PUSHED DOWN VERY HARD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL WITH BOTH FEET AND ALTHOUGH THE CAR SLOWED A LITTLE, THE SPEED CONTROL DRAMATICALLY SPEEDED UP THE ENGINE WITH THE TACHOMETER GOING ALMOST FULL SCALE. I WAS ABLE TO REDUCE THE CAR'S SPEED FROM ABOUT 65 TO UNDER 50 MPH, BUT WAS STILL PRETTY SCARED. THIS WAS A TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE AND AS AN ENGINEER I REALIZED MY OPTIONS AND TIME TO REACT WERE VERY LIMITED! I FIGURED MY CHOICES WERE FEW: 1) BRAKE UNTIL THE CAR EITHER STOPPED OR I HAD HIT THE STOPPED CARS AT THE TOLL BOOTHS (MAYBE DAMAGE THE TRANSMISSION FURTHER), 2) SHIFT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL HOPING THAT EITHER THE SPEED CONTROL WOULD DISENGAGE OR AT LEAST I COULD STOP THE CAR (ENGINE RPMS MIGHT RUN AWAY AND DESTROY THE ENGINE), OR 3) TRY TO SHUT OFF THE SPEED CONTROL WITH THE CONTROL STALK ON THE LEFT OF THE STEERING COLUMN (WHICH I OBVIOUSLY COULD NOT READ CLOSELY TO FIGURE OUT WHERE THE STOP MIGHT BE). FORTUNATELY, WITH SEVERAL TRIES I WAS ABLE TO FIND THE STOP POSITION ON THE SPEED CONTROL STALK AND DISENGAGE THE CONTROL. I BRAKED VERY HARD TO STOP SHORT OF A COLLISION..... AND GOT HARSH WORDS AND LOOKS FROM THE ADJACENT TOLL COLLECTORS. I SUSPECTED THAT THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH WAS NOT WORKING AND THIS WAS CONFIRMED BY MY MECHANIC (EDDIE RODRIGUEZ OF EDDY'S TOTAL AUTO CARE). THE MECHANIC ALSO HAS TO REPLACE THE BRAKE PRESSURE SENSOR. MY WIFE IS INSISTING THAT I GET RID OF THE CAR IMMEDIATELY AND BUY A NEW CAR. I LOVE MY ML 320..... BUT I LOVE MY WIFE TOO! *TR
2002 ML 320 FRONT BRAKES LOCKED UP BY THEMSELVES NEARLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. BURNING SMELL DETECTED FROM FRONT WHEELS. VEHICLE TAKEN TO DEALER WHO CLAIMED SENSORS HAD FAILED AND THAT THIS WAS A RARE PROBLEM; CONSUMER CHARGED TO REPLACE SENSORS. LESS THAN ONE MONTH LATER THE SAME THING OCCURRED, DEALER NOW STATES IT IS A PRESSURE ISSUE BUT WANTS TO KEEP VEHICLE OVERNIGHT TO DUPLICATE STATED PROBLEM. OWNER INITIALLY NOTICED THIS PROBLEM OVER 1 YEAR AGO, TAKING IT TO THE DEALER THINKING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS STICKING, CAUSING THE BURNING SMELL AND SLUGGISHNESS. DURING THAT VISIT THE DEALER STATED IT FOUND NO PROBLEM WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. OWNER PAID TO HAVE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS REPLACED DUE TO PITTING AND GROVING CAUSED BY THE FRONT BRAKES SELF-ENGAGING; THIS DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AND THE DEALER IS CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING A PRESSURE ISSUE. VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 24K MILES ON IT AND WAS PURCHASED FROM THE DEALER BRAND NEW. *TR
FOUND IDENTICAL PROBLEM PER NHTSA ACTION # EA08009 DEFECT INVESTIGATION. CONSTANT LOSS OF BRAKE PRESSURE. WARNING LIGHTS INDICATED LOW BRAKE FLUID. FOUND FLUID UNDER CAR AND IN FRONT LEFT WHEEL-WELL. UPON INSPECTION, FOUND BRAKE HARD LINE FROM MASTER CYLINDER WAS CHAFFED FROM ADJACENT FUEL LINE, CAUSING SMALL PIN-HOLE LEAK IN BRAKE LINE. WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED, BRAKE FLUID WOULD SPRAY OUT, RESULTING IN INSUFFICIENT BRAKING PRESSURE TO HOLD VEHICLE AT STOPS. CONTACTED MERCEDES DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THEY WERE UN-AWARE OF ANY PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS. ESTIMATED COST OF REPAIR WAS >$1000. ($112 FOR PART, $975 FOR 6HRS LABOR) PART NUMBER: A1634201526 PURCHASED LENGTH OF HARDLINE MYSELF AT PARTS STORE. CONSTRUCTED AND INSTALLED MY OWN REPLACEMENT PART FOR $155 INCLUDING PURCHASE OF TOOLS TO COMPLETE JOB. *TR

WHILE DRIVING, ML500 BEGAN TO BRAKE RANDOMLY . ALSO ABS TURNED ON WHILE STOPPING AND ACCELERATING. ALSO BRAKES WERE CONSTANTLY SCREECHING. WARNING LIGHTS FOR ABS, BAS, AND WASHER FLUID. FLUID LEVEL WAS FINE. I TOLD DEALER ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS BEFORE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTICS TEST AND FOUND NOTHING WAS WRONG. THEY ADVISED ME TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN SHOULD THE SAME EVENTS OCCUR. (THE RANDOM BREAKING BEGAN TO OCCUR AFTER WARRANTY EXPIRED). THE PROBLEM CONTINUED TO PERSIST AND WITH THE FAILURE OF ABS SYSTEM, I BROUGHT THE ML500 BACK TO THE SERVICE CENTER. AFTER TWO DAYS, I RETRIEVED THE VEHICLE AND THE COST TO REPAIR WAS $1100.00. "CONVENIENTLY" THEY FOUND THE SAME PROBLEMS I SPOKE OF BEFORE AFTER THE WARRANTY WAS UP. WE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO PAY TO RESTORE FUNCTION TO THE VEHICLE. AFTER TAKING IT HOME WE NOTICED THAT THE THERE WAS NO SOUND IN THE VEHICLE. THE SOUND AND NAVIGATION VOICE WORKED PERFECTLY BEFORE GETTING SERVICE. AND AFTERWARDS IT DID NOT. WE CALLED THE SERVICE CENTER, AND THEY SAID TO BRING IT BACK AT OUR EARLIEST CONVENIENCE, AND THEY WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. I ASSUME THAT THIS WAS A MISTAKE ON THEIR PART. WHEN I RETURNED TO RESTORE THE SOUND THEY APPROACHED ME AND TOLD ME THAT A "VOICE MODULATION UNIT" BENEATH THE DRIVER'S SEAT HAD GONE OUT, AND THAT IT WOULD COST $750.00 PARTS AND LABOR TO REPAIR. THEY TRIED TO EXPLAIN TO ME THAT THIS WAS JUST A COINCIDENCE, AND THAT THE UNIT WAS IN NO WAY RELATED OR CIRCUIT LINKED TO THE SENSORS THEY REPLACED. I BELIEVE THAT THEY MUST HAVE MISTAKENLY SHORTED IT. WE HAVE SPENT ALMOST $10,000.00 IN THE PAST YEAR FOR REPAIRS TO THIS VEHICLE AND ONE OTHER MERCEDES. THEY DID NOT GOOD WILL CREDIT THE WORK SO I DID NOT ACCEPT THE REPAIR SERVICE. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A $750.00 COINCIDENCE. I PURCHASED A USED 2002 ML320. ONCE THE VEHICLE CAME OF THE LOT IT WAS FINE IN THE BEGINNING; HOWEVER, THE BAS/ESP CONTINUES TO COME ON EVERY TWO TO THREE MONTHS. AT FIRST, I TOOK IT TO NAPA ON METRO PARKWAY IN FORT MYERS WHICH THEY REPLACED THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH AND THEN TWO MONTHS TO THREE MONTHS LATER THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK FOR THE SAME SITUATION. THEY REPLACED THE SWITCH AND SAID THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH THEY RECEIVED WAS FROM MERCEDES BENZ. IN THE SPRING 2007 THE SAME SITUATION OCCURRED AND TOOK IT TO MERCEDES BENZ OF FORT MYERS AND THEY ALSO REPLACED THE SWITCH AS WELL. HOWEVER, MERCEDES OF FORT MYERS CHANGED AND FOLLOWED ORDERS FROM CORPORATE ON WHAT TO DO BUT TO NO AVAIL. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE SINCE THE PURCHASED OF THE ML320. CURRENTLY, OCTOBER 1, 2009 THE VEHICLE IS AT MERCEDES AT FORT MYERS FOR THE SAME ISSUE. MY WIFE AND I HAVE CONTACTED MERCEDES CUSTOMER COMPLAINT WITH THIS ISSUE BUT WE FEEL ENOUGH IS NOT BEING DONE TO RESOLVE. THE SITUATION BEGAN IN THE MONTH OF DECEMBER 9, 2006 AND CONTINUES PRESENTLY WHICH I HAVE INDICATED. OTHER DRIVERS CAME CLOSE TO CRASHING INTO ME DUE TO NO BRAKES LIGHTS. MY WIFE AND I FEEL THAT WE PURCHASED A USED VEHICLE THAT IS CONSIDERED TO BE A LEMON THAT HAD ABOUT SEVENTY TWO PLUS THOUSAND MILES ON IT. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE HAD REPEATED PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKE ASSISTANCE SYSTEM. THE PROBLEM PRESENTED ITSELF BY THE ILLUMINATION OF THE DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN SEVEN TIMES FOR SERVICE ON THE BRAKE ASSISTANCE SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE ALSO HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, SHUT OFF, AND RESTARTED LATER, THE GEARSHIFT BECAME STUCK IN THE PARK POSITION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER, AND THE DEALER TEMPORARILY REPAIRED BOTH ISSUES. THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE TWO PROBLEMS WERE RELATED.*AK
DASH BOARD BRAKE LIGHT WENT ON AND THE BRAKES FAILED. *LA
WARRANTY ISSUES AND/OR MANUFACTURING DEFECTS THAT SHOULD BE COVERED BY WARRANTY. ON OCTOBER. 21, 2003 TOOK MY ML500 YEAR 2002 TO DEALER FOR SQUEALING AND SCRAPING BRAKES. SERVICE DEPARTMENT COULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM THE SQUEALING AND SCRAPING AND TOLD ME THAT BRAKE DISC AND PADS LOOKS FINE. HOWEVER THEY ADVISED ME TO BUY NEWER VERSION OF BRAKE PADS, WHICH WOULD NOT SQUEAL. I REFUSED TO BUY BRAKE PADS, AS THEY SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I WAS NOT SATISFIED, THEREFORE TOOK THE VEHICLE AGAIN NEXT DAY (OCTOBER 22,2003) AND TALKED TO THE SALES PERSON FROM WHOM I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. HE AND SERVICE MANAGER PERFORMED TEST DRIVE. DEALERSHIP CHECKED THE BRAKES AGAIN AND TOLD THE SQUEALING AND SCRAPPING WAS DUE TO A ROCK STUCK BETWEEN BRAKE PADS AND DISC. SINCE YESTERDAY, I HAD DRIVEN MY VEHICLE ONLY 24 MILES BUT NOW THE PADS AND ROTORS HAVE BEEN DAMAGED. BECAUSE OF THEIR NEGLIGENCE AND UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, DEALERSHIP CHARGED ME $348.04 FOR MY 18 MONTHS OLD VEHICLE, THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. DEALERSHIP AND MERCEDES BENZ DID NOT HONOR THE WARRANTY. SAME DAY, ANOTHER CUSTOMER CAME TO THE DEALERSHIP WITH SIMILAR PROBLEM, HIS MERCEDES ALSO HAD A ROCK STUCK BETWEEN BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON DEFECT IN THE MERCEDES THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL. *AK
