An SUV crashed into an apple store in Hingham Mass. The driver told police his foot became stuck to the gas pedal. More likely his foot became hooked under the brake pedal as he tried to quickly shift his foot from the gas pedal up and to the left onto the brake pedal. This has happened to me several times after accelerating and then having to make a 'panic' stop. I had to quickly wiggle-foot from under to the top of the brake pedal. Brake pedals should be changed from a T shaped to a 7 shaped configuration. This would eliminate the hook. T configuration-the 'stem' is attached under the center of the brake pedal 7 configuration-the 'stem' is attached under the right edge of the brake pedal
I WAS DRIVING AT 45 MPH AND APPLIED THE BRAKE TO STOP. THE ENGINE REVVED TO 2,000 RPM. I WAS ABLE TO STOP WITH VERY HARD BRAKING USING BOTH FEET. THE ENGINE CONTINUE REVVING AT 2,000 RPM EVEN AFTER THE CAR HAD STOPPED. I PLACED THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE REVVED EVEN FASTER. THE ENGINE DID NOT SLOW DOWN UNTIL I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. AFTER LEAVING THE ENGINE OFF FOR AROUND TWO MINUTES, I RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND IT RESUMED RUNNING AT AROUND 500 RPM. MY 23 YEAR OLD SON WAS SEATED NEXT TO ME AND VERIFIED THAT NOTHING WAS TOUCHING THE ACCELERATOR WHILE THE ENGINE WAS REVVING AT 2,000 RPM AND THAT BOTH OF MY FEET WERE ON THE BRAKE. THE ENGINE HAS REVVED WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKE AT LEAST SEVEN OTHER TIMES; HOWEVER, THE REVVING STOPPED AFTER ONE OR TWO SECONDS. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO A FORD DEALER THREE TIMES FOR THIS PROBLEM; HOWEVER, THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. *TR
I APPLIED THE BRAKES AT AROUND 20 MILES PER HOUR ON JANUARY 25 AND THE MOTOR ACCELERATED FOR ONE OR TWO SECONDS. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR BY PRESSING THE BRAKES MUCH HARDER THAN NORMAL. ON JANUARY 26 I APPLIED THE BRAKES AT AROUND 60 MILES PER HOUR AND THE MOTOR AGAIN ACCELERATED FOR ONE OR TWO SECONDS. I CONTINUED TO PRESS THE BRAKES, THE MOTOR SLOWED DOWN AND THE CAR EVENTUALLY SLOWED. IT SOUNDED LIKE PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR DOWN HARD TO PASS ANOTHER CAR ON A TWO LANE ROAD. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS LS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDALS WERE ENTIRELY TOO CLOSE TO EACH OTHER, CAUSING THE CONTACT TO SIMULTANEOUSLY DEPRESS BOTH PEDALS. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THE BLEED THE BRAKES. THE DEALER ALSO ADVISED THAT THE SPECIFICATIONS OF BOTH PEDALS CONFORMED TO GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT BELIEVED THE PEDAL DESIGN WAS DEFECTIVE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 12,932 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 23,000. UPDATED 10/13/10. *LJ UPDATED 10/19/19*JB
