JUST LEFT THE HIGHWAY AND ENDED UP AT A RED LIGHT TRAFFIC SIGNAL AND ONE THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I WENT TO DRIVE OFF AND A LOUD BOOM I COULD HEAR COMING FROM UNDER MY HOOD, AS I LOOKED IN MY REAR VIEW MIRROR A SEMI TRUCK STARTED HONKING ITS HORN AND SLAMMED TO MISS HITTING FROM BEHIND. I WENT TO PULL TO THE SIDE THE ROAD BUT TRUCK WAS JUMPING ALL OVER AND I HAD TO PULL IN FRONT OF CARS TURNING WHICH I SMELT A SMELL LIKE SOMETHING BURNING. *TR
MY COMPLAINT IS ON THE REAR BACK PANEL. WHEN I BOUGHT THIS CAR MY BACK PANEL CRACKED AT 76,000 MILES. OUT OF POCKET COST TO ME TO REPLACE THIS PANEL $500. NOW 2 MONTHS AGO I NOTICED A CRACK IN THAT PANEL AND DAYS LATER THE ENTIRE PANEL FLEW OFF MY CAR AS I AM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD! I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE SHOCK OF THE DRIVER IN THE VEHICLE BEHIND ME. FORD/MERCURY SHOULD MAN UP AND RECALL THESE. FIND A PERMANENT SOLUTION FOR AN OBVIOUS DESIGN FLAW ON THEIR PART. EVERYWHERE I GO I SEE MOUNTAINEERS AND EXPLORERS WITH CRACKED, HALF GONE OR COMPLETELY GONE REAR BACK PANELS. RIDICULOUS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS. THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND INSPECTED THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE RESUMED OPERATION WITH CAUTION TO THE RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE FRONT AND REAR CONTROL ARM. THE FRONT AND REAR CONTROL ARMS WERE REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 121,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
THE ISSUE WITH MY CAR THE TRANSMISSION I WAS DRIVING IT ONE THE INTERSTATE WHEN I STARTED TO HER A ROAR COMING FROM MY ENGINE AND THAT WHEN I NOTICED MY RPM WAS OFF THE CHART AND I STARTED TO GO SLOWER BY THE MINUTE AND AS I CALLED UP MY MECHANIC HE SAID IT WAS MY TRANSMISSION AND BEING FROM ANOTHER STATE AND ONLY HAVING 100 BUCKS IN THE POCKET IS NOT GOOD SO NOW IM STUCK IN A TOWN WITH NO JOB NOW NEEDING TO GET MY TRANSMISSION FIXED AND NOT HAVING A CAR TO DRIVE I CANT GET A JOB NOT HAVING A JOB MAKES ME LOSE MY CAR AND HAVING NO HOME LEFT FOR ME THAT'S JUST NOT RIGHT FORD SHOULD B THE ONES IN MY SHOES. *TR
RECENTLY, THE PCV VALVE IN MY 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER HAD A LEAK (VACUUM SYSTEM LEAK). AS THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO STALL AS A RESULT OF THIS LEAK, WHILE TRAVELING 55 MPH, AND DECELERATING TOWARDS A TRAFFIC LIGHT, I LOST ALL FUNCTION OF MY BRAKES. WHEN I STEPPED HARD ON THE BRAKES, THERE WAS NO RESPONSE. HOWEVER, BECAUSE I EQUATED THIS TO POSSIBLY BEING TIED TO THE PCV VALVE, I STEPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR TO INCREASE AIRFLOW INTO THE ENGINE SO THAT I WOULD HAVE BRAKE FUNCTION. THIS GAVE ME BRAKE FUNCTION, TEMPORARILY. HOWEVER, THIS MOVE WAS VERY RISKY, AS I WAS APPROACHING CARS IN FRONT OF ME AND ACCELERATING TOWARDS THEM INSTEAD OF DECELERATING, JUST SO I COULD SLAM ON THE BRAKES AND HAVE FUNCTIONING BRAKES. THERE IS AN APPARENT LINK BETWEEN THE BRAKES AND THE VACUUM SYSTEM...WHICH POSES A DEADLY SITUATION. HAD I NOT BEEN AWARE OF VACUUM SYSTEM ISSUES AND HOW TO MITIGATE THEM, I WOULD HAVE PLOWED INTO THE STOPPED VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME WITH NO BRAKES. THIS OCCURRED IN THE EVENING. I HAD TO USE THIS METHOD TO COMPLETE THE REMAINDER OF MY TRIP TO GET HOME, ACCELERATING EVERY TIME I NEEDED TO USE BRAKES, BECAUSE THE STALLING VEHICLE EVERY TIME HAD NO BRAKE FUNCTION. THIS CONDITION PUT ME IN A VERY BAD SITUATION, AS I ALSO HAD MY 5 YEAR OLD IN THE CAR WITH ME. THIS SYSTEM SHOULD BE RECALLED AS IT IS UNSAFE. REPLACING THE PCV VALVE CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. THERE IS ALSO NO NOTICE IN THE OPERATING MANUAL FOR THIS VEHICLE ABOUT THIS VACUUM SYSTEM PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE OPERATING MANUAL THAT CAME WITH THIS CAR IS FOR A PROTOTYPE SOFTWARE SYSTEM, AND DOESN'T EVEN MATCH MY VEHICLE. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO MERCURY/FORD ABOUT THIS INCORRECT MANUAL, BUT THEY DID NOT OFFER TO SEND ME A NEW ONE, AND SIMPLY TOOK THE INFORMATION AND DIDN'T EVEN RESPOND TO MY CONCERNS. *TR
OTHER VEHICLES OF THE SAME MAKE, MODEL, AND YEAR HAVE BEEN INCLUDED FOR A SAFETY RECALL REGARDING THE BRACKETS CONNECTING THE LIFT CYLINDERS TO EACH SIDE OF THE LIFTGATE GLASS. THE ADHESIVE HAS WORKED LOOSE AND THE CYLINDER WILL NOT HOLD OPEN THE GLASS; THE GATE HAS FALLEN AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO, RESULTING IN GLASS BREAKAGE. *TR
FAILURE OF REAR COIL SPRING ON 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER. *TR
BOTH REAR COIL SPRINGS WERE BROKEN. BOTH HAD BEEN WEAKENED DUE TO CORROSION BEFORE THEY BROKE. THIS IS A WIDELY-KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE AND I HAD BEEN CHECKING FOR THIS PROBLEM EVERY COUPLE MONTHS. I LAST CHECKED IN DECEMBER OF 2008 AND NEITHER SPRING WAS BROKEN THROUGH AND NEITHER SHOWED EXTERNAL CORROSION AT THE TIME, BUT THEY MUST HAVE BEEN VERY DETERIORATED EVEN THEN. MY POINT IS THAT A VISUAL INSPECTION WITH THE WHEELS OFF DID NOT REVEAL THE PROBLEM BEFORE THE SPRINGS BROKE. ONE OF THE BROKEN SPRINGS HAS A SPLIT ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE SPRING WIRE SEVERAL INCHES LONG AND A COMPLETE FAILURE ROUGHLY PERPENDICULAR TO THE WIRE. THE OTHER DOES NOT HAVE THE SPLIT; IT IS JUST BROKEN IN SHEAR PERPENDICULAR TO THE WIRE. *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER I HIT A BUMP ON A SMALL BRIDGE AND MY REAR DRIVERS SIDE COILSPRING SNAPPED IN HALF. ODDLY ABOUT TEN DAYS LATER I WAS FOLLOWING A MOUNTAINEER THAT HIT A DIP IN THE ROAD AND THE SAME COILSPRING BROKE. I DO NOT KNOW THE YEAR OF THAT MOUNTAINEER THOUGH. TO REPAIR THE COILSPRING IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE BECAUSE IT IS DEALER ONLY 300.00 FOR THE PART AND 135.00 TO INSTALL IT. *TR
I HAD A FLAT TIRE AT THE LEFT REAR OF THE VEHICLE, WHEN CHANGING THE TIRE I NOTICED THE SPRING WAS BROKEN IN SEVERAL PIECES. I HAVE TO SEE OF THE DEALER WILL REPLACE IT UNDER WARRANTY MY VEHICLE HAS 90,000 MILES. *TR
OD LIGHT STARTING FLASHING, THEN CHECK TRANSMISSION LIGHT STARTING FLASHING, THEN 3 AND 5TH GEAR STARTED SNATCHING, TRANSMISSION WENT OUT. I HEARD ALOT OF THESE SUVS ARE HAVING PROBLEMS JUST LIKE MINE. *TR
I HAVE A 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER, SAME AS THE EXPLORER. MY OD LIGHT STARTED FLASHING AND I HAD FORD SERVICE CENTER RUN THE CODE, CODE 755 SOLENOID B, I HAD THE FORD SERVICE CENTER REPLACE IT TO THE TUNE OF $698 ON MARCH 5. I GOT THE TRUCK BACK MARCH 5, 2009 AT 12PM. MARCH 6, 2009 8 AM, SAME ISSUE. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE SERVICE CENTER AND I'M TOLD I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. MARCH 9, 2009 I TOOK THE TRUCK TO 2 SEPARATE SHOPS, ONE OF THEM BEING A VETERAN TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP. SAME SOLENOID CODE 755 SOLENOID B. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE SERVICE CENTER AND AM TOLD THAT THEY WILL REPLACE AND I STILL NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. THE TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP TOLD ME THAT FORD KNOWS OF THE PROBLEM AND IT IS NOT THE TRANSMISSION, THE WIRING HARNESS IS BAD WHICH CAUSES THE SOLENOID TO SHOW AS BAD AND SHOW THE CODE. SHE SAID SHE HAS HAD DEALINGS WITH THE SAME SERVICE CENTER AND EVERYTIME THEY TELL CUSTOMERS THEY NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ONLINE FOR THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. *TR
REAR PANEL UNDER WINDOW HAS RECENTLY CRACKED, THERE ARE NOW 2 VERTICAL CRACKS RUNNING DOWN THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. ALSO, HITCH TO REAR DOOR DOESN'T STAY UP. THIS VEHICLE HAS ALSO HAD A NEW ENGINE PUT IT AND INJECTORS HAVE POPPED OUT ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION. THIS IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE VEHICLE I HAVE EVER PURCHASED AND IT HAS GIVEN ME MORE PROBLEMS THAN I COULD EVER EXPECT IN A VEHICLE. FORD NEEDS TO COMPENSATE FOR THIS VEHICLE. REAR WHEEL BEARINGS FAILING FOR A SECOND TIME. FIRST TIME WAS ON 3/15/08. *TR
TRANSMISSION SLIPS ON MY 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER 6 CYLINDER AWD. THERE IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS TRANSMISSION THROUGHOUT 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER OWNERS. WHY HAS THERE BEEN NO RECALL ON THIS TRANSMISSION. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE CONTACT APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES AND HEARD A GRINDING SOUND. HE THEN BEGAN TO SMELL SOMETHING BURNING AND NOTICED SMOKE UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. HE INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND DID NOT NOTICE ANY LEAKING. THE FOLLOWING DAY HE NOTICED AN EXTENSIVE AMOUNT OF OIL ON THE GROUND AND THE VEHICLE WAS PULLING. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A MECHANIC AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT OIL WAS COMING FROM THREE DIFFERENT PLACES AND TRAVELING TO THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL. THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER HAVE NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 118,169 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 118,000.
THE TRANSMISSION IN THIS VEHICLE IS DEFECTIVE. THEIR SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS MODEL WHICH IS A 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER. THE PROBLEM IS COSTING ALL OF FORDS CUSTOMERS ALOT OF MONEY AVERAGE COST IS 2600 DOLLARS. THEY KNOW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND WILL NOT HELP EVEN WITH SOME OF THE REPAIR COST. I OWN A 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER 4.6L AWD. AFTER BUYING THIS CAR I HAD HEARD ABOUT HOW BIG OF A LEMON THE TRANSMISSIONS ARE, AND ON JANUARY 27TH I FOUND THIS OUT FOR MYSELF. FIRST MY CAR BEGAN SHIFTING VERY HARSHLY. THEN MY O/D OFF LIGHT BEGAN FLASHING, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AND CHECK TRANSMISSION LCD CAME ON. I LOST THIRD GEAR ON THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY AND HAD TO DRIVE 9 MILES HOME GOING ONLY 25 MPH. THEN I FOUND OUT THAT IT IS GOING TO COST $2500+ TO FIX THE PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY I'M A SINGLE MOTHER AND FULL-TIME STUDENT, SO MY CAR IS JUST GOING TO SIT FOR A FEW MONTHS UNTIL I CAN AFFORD TO FIX IT. FORD SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE HEARD FAR TOO MANY COMPLAINTS AND NO ONE HAS DONE ANYTHING ABOUT IT . *TR
AS I WAS ACCELERATING NOTHING HAPPENED. THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AND DIDN'T GO ANYWHERE AND THEN IT JERKED JUST AS A CAR WAS APPROACHING, WHICH MADE THE OTHER CAR SWERVE AND IT ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT. *TR 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEERS ARE NOTORIOUS FOR BAD TRANSMISSIONS AND THEY ARE A DANGER. FORD REFUSES TO TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR POORLY BUILT TRANSMISSIONS. *TR

TEN MINUTES LATER START THE VEHICLE AND LIGHT NOT ON AND TRANSMISSION SHIFTS FINE. HAPPENS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO SLIP. TAKE TO MECHANIC FLUID LEVEL AND FILTER ARE FINE. HOOK UP TO COMPUTER AND SAYS VARIOUS INTERNAL PROBLEMS. TORQUE CONVERTER ALSO BEGAN WHINING AND MAKING NOISE WHICH PROBABLY MEANS ITS COMING APART INSIDE. ESTIMATED FIX BETWEEN 1800.00-2800.00! REAR TAILGATE LATCH BRAKES ACROSS THIS IS A KNOW ISSUE WITH ALL FORD EXPLORERS AND MERCURY MOUNTAINEERS. IT'S OBVIOUSLY A BAD DESIGN FROM FORD MOTOR CO. FORD NEEDS TO RECALL THIS AND IT'S THEIR DESIGN AND IT ALSO CAN REPRESENT AN INJURY TO SOMEONE IF A PIECE WAS TO FALL OFF AND HIT ANOTHER CAR. *TR
THE TRANSMISSION ON MY 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER. THE O/D LIGHT IS FLASHING, AND SEEMS TRANS IS SLIPPING EVEN WORSE. I HAVE HAD IT TO THE DEALERSHIP MANY TIMES SINCE I BOUGHT IT NEW, AND THEY NEVER COULD FIND THE PROBLEM. NOW IT HAS BEEN OUT OF WARRANTY FOR QUIET SOME TIME AND HAS BECAME A HUGE PROBLEM. I LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND NOTICED A TON OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS EXACT ISSUE AND WAS HOPING IT WOULD BE GROUND FOR A RECALL. *TR
ON DEC. 19, 2008, THE O/D LIGHT BEGAN TO FLASH AND THEN ON DEC.26TH THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON. AS I WAS DRIVING THE CAR BEGAN TO REV UP WHEN I WAS NOT MASHING THE GAS. I HAVE NOT DRIVEN IT SINCE. I CALLED THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD TO DO A DIAGNOSTIC TEST ON IT, IT WOULD COST $98 PER ISSUE. I SEARCHED THE ISSUE ONLINE AND FOUND THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS AND HAVE PAID THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO HAVE IT FIXED. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THIS IS A RECALLABLE ISSUE DUE TO THE ABOUT OF COMPLAINTS? I JUST SPENT $300 HAVING THE DOOR AJAR SENSOR FIXED, SOMETHING THAT OTHERS HAVE ALSO COMPLAINED ABOUT. *TR
WHEN APPROACHING MY VEHICLE (2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER) FROM BEHIND, I NOTICED A CRACK IN THE CENTER OF THE LIFTGATE PANEL, BEGINNING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDOW AND EXTENDING TO THE HANDLE. I RESEARCHED THIS ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT IT IS A PROBLEM WHICH HAS OCCURRED IN FORD-MANUFACTURED SUVS, INCLUDING THE MOUNTAINEER AND EXPLORER. I CALLED THE SERVICE MANAGER OF THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. HE WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE PROBLEM AND STATED THAT THE PANEL WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. SINCE THERE IS NO RECALL ISSUED, THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO. I THEN CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SPOKE TO A PERSON WHO TOLD ME THAT FORD COULD NOT PROVIDE ASSISTANCE SINCE MY VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. SINCE THIS IS AN OBVIOUS DEFECT IN THE PRODUCT, I BELIEVE THAT FORD SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL AND COVER THE REPAIR COST. FORD SHOULD STAND BEHIND THE QUALITY OF ITS VEHICLES AND IF THERE IS A PROBLEM, THEN IT SHOULD PROVIDE THE CUSTOMER WITH A SATISFACTORY REMEDY. *TR

THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 90,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 170,000. EXPERIENCING TRANSMISSION ISSUES AT 75K MILES. TOOK IT TO SHOP WHO REPORTED THESE TRANSMISSIONS ARE NOTORIOUSLY BAD, REPLACING SOME AT 60K MILES AND MOST BY 100K. MINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $2500. PROBLEM IS USE OF ALUMINUM WITHIN METAL AND FAST WEAR. FORD SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR MAKING POOR QUALITY PRODUCTS. TRANSMISSIONS SHOULD HAVE A MUCH GREATER LIFE THAN 75K MILES. PROBLEMS NOTICED - SLIPPING OUT OF GEAR WHILE DRIVING, NOT ENGAGING GEAR WHEN SELECTED, NOT SHIFTING INTO HIGHER GEAR (OVERREVVING),, CLUNKING SHIFTS. DANGER ARISES WHEN YOU SELECT GEAR, ACCELERATE AND NOTHING HAPPENS AND SUDDENLY IT POPS INTO GEAR WHICH CAUSES VEHICLE TO LUNGE FORWARD. *TR
TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. LESS THAN 80,000 MILES ON VEHICLE. MAINTENANCE KEPT UP TO DATE. I STARTED THE CAR AND BEGAN TO DRIVE AWAY WHEN SUDDENLY IT WOULD NOT PICK UP SPEED AND IT KEPT JERKING. IT WAS NOT DRIVEABLE AT ESPECIALLY ON A HIGHWAY. EVERYWHERE I WENT TOLD ME IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION. IT COST ME OVER $2,000.00 FOR ANOTHER TRANSMISSION. I AM SHOCKED TO SEE SO MANY OTHERS WITH TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. I HAD NO PROBLEMS AT ALL WITH THIS VEHICLE UNTIL THIS HAPPENED. I FIND IT STRANGE THAT I NEVER HAD ANY OTHER MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR AND SUDDENLY I LOSE A TRANSMISSION. IT SOUNDS LIKE A RECALL WAS DUE TO MYSELF AS WELL AS THOUSANDS OF OTHERS WITH THIS SAME MAKE AND MODEL. I WAS READY TO MAKE MERCURY MY MAIN CHOICE OF VEHICLE BUT AFTER THIS, I DON'T THINK SO. I WOULD LOVE TO BE INCLUDED IN A CLASS ACTION SUIT.

I BOUGHT THIS MOUNTAINEER IN EARLY 2007 WITH 62,000 MILES ON IT. FROM THE START IT SHIFTED VERY ROUGH. IT HAS PROGRESSIVELY WORSENED UNTIL THIS WEEK WHEN MY WIFE WAS DRIVING IT WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF SECOND GEAR AT ALL AND WAS NEARLY BROADSIDED WITH FOUR CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE BECAUSE SHE COULD NOT MOVE. TOOK IT TO A REPAIR SHOP AND WAS INFORMED THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION FIXED. FROM OTHER COMMENTS I HAVE READ THIS SEEMS TO BE A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. ALSO HAD TO HAVE THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL REPLACED AT AROUND 75,000 MILES WHICH SEEMS FAIRLY RIDICULOUS, AND A BEARING HAS GONE OUT TWICE ON THE SAME WHEEL. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER. WHEN THE CONTACT OPENED THE LIFTGATE, THE GLASS SHATTERED ON HER HAND. THE BRACKETS CAUSED THE LIFT CYLINDERS TO DETACH FROM THE GLASS AND SHATTER. PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE CONTACT HEARD A RATTLING SOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED ACCORDING TO FORD RECALL NUMBER 04S20 AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 01I010000 (VISIBILITY:GLASS, SIDE/REAR). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN BECAUSE THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CONSTANTLY DISPLAYS AN ERROR MESSAGE STATING THAT THE REAR LIFTGATE IS AJAR DUE TO THE FAILURE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH WITH THE FRONT DRIVER SEAT HEATING SYSTEM ACTIVATED, AND THEN THERE WAS AN UNEXPECTED EXCESSIVE HIGH VOLTAGE OF HEAT PENETRATION THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE SEAT. THE DRIVER SMELLED A STRONG BURNING ODOR OF RUBBER IN THE FOAM SEAT CUSHION. THE DRIVER PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AFTER WAITING TWENTY-FIVE MINUTES FOR THE SEATING AREA TO COOL DOWN, HE WAS ABLE TO RESUME NORMAL VEHICLE OPERATION. THERE WAS NO PERSONAL INJURIES SUSTAINED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO A SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE HEATED SEAT SYSTEM. THE TECHNICIAN RECOMMENDED NOT TO ACTIVATE THE HEATED SEAT SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED FOR THE MALFUNCTION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,00. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 89,000.
I OWN A 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER. THE TAILGATE DEVELOPED A CRACK BETWEEN THE EMBLEM AND THE REAR GLASS LIFT. SINCE THIS CRACK HAS DEVELOPED, THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT HAS STAYED ON CONSISTENTLY, CAUSING THE INTERIOR LIGHT TO STAY ON, DRAINING THE BATTERY, WHICH HAD TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE NOTICED THE SAME CRACK IN ALMOST EVERY FORD EXPLORER THAT I SEE. I HAVE NOT YET ATTEMPTED A REPAIR BECAUSE I DON'T FEEL I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR AN OBVIOUS MANUFACTURING DEFECT. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE FRONT LEFT ORIGINAL MANUFACTURES RIM HAD A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. THE RIM IN QUESTION AFTER INVESTIGATING IT HAD A FRACTURE THAT WAS PERPENDICULAR TO THE ROTATION OF THE RIM WHICH RESULTED IN THE LOSS OF AIR PRESSURE CAUSING A SECONDARY FAILURE BY THE RIM FRACTURING IN THE CIRCUMFERENCE CAUSING THE RIM ITSELF TO SEPARATE INTO TWO PIECES. *TR

I WENT TO SHIFT MY CAR INTO REVERSE AND THE STICK SHIFT LOCATED NEXT TO STEERING WHEEL CAME OFF IN MY HAND, WENT TO DEALER AND THE PART WAS $800.00 FOR THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN, THE PART THAT BROKE WAS A SMALL PIECE HOLDING THE STICK, BUT DEALER SAID IT HAD TO REPLACE ALL OF IT. I HAD NOTICED THE STANCE OF THE VEHICLE HAD CHANGE AND DURING A ROUTINE NEW YORK STATE INSPECTION IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE REAR SPRINGS ON MY 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER HAD BROKEN. THE REAR SPRING DEFECT ALSO CAUSE THE REAR SHOCKS TO PREMATURELY WEAR OUT AND NEED REPLACEMENT. THE SPRINGS WERE CRACKED ENTIRELY IN HALF. IT APPEARS AS IF THERE WERE A DEFECT RELATING TO THE METALLURGICAL PROPERTIES OF THE METAL USED OR POSSIBLY A DEFECT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF THE SPRINGS. AT NO TIME WAS THIS VEHICLE DRIVEN OFF ROAD OR USED TO TOW ANYTHING. THE VEHICLE SIMPLY WAS USED BY MY WIFE TO DRIVE BACK AND FORTH TO WORK( 20 MILE ROUND TRIP ON THE HIGHWAY) THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY BY ABOUT 2 YEARS AND HAD ABOUT 50,000 MILES ON IT. A FORD REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER FOR THEM TO INSPECT IT, THERE CONCLUSION WAS THE SAME. TWO REAR BROKEN SPRINGS, AS WELL AS 2 REAR SHOCKS THAT REQUIRED REPLACEMENT . THEIR COST ....OVER $1000.00. THERE IS NO WAY THIS ITEM SHOULD BREAK...GOD FORBID IT HAPPENS ON THE HIGHWAY AT A HIGH SPEED, .... A SPRING BREAK AT HIGHWAY SPEED WOULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO BECOME EXTREMELY UNSTABLE AND POSSIBLY CAUSE A HIGH SPEED CRASH. SPRINGS ACTUALLY SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF THE VEHICLE AND WHEN THERE BROKEN.....THERE IS A SUDDEN AND UNFORESEEN UNSETTLING OF THE VEHICLE.....WHICH IN MY OPINION IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. SIX MONTHS LATER TRANSMISSION WARNING LIGHT IS BACK (WARRANTY HAS JUST EXPIRED).
