STEERING PROBLEM WITH NISSAN ALTIMA 2002 THE STEERING COUPLING IN THE STEERING COLUMN CORRODED MAKING THE STEERING VERY DIFFICULT. POWER ASSIST WAS NOT AVAILABLE AS FAULT WAS IN COLUMN. STEERING CONTROL WAS LOST WHILE DRIVING CREATING A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. *TR
I BOUGHT A NISSAN ALTIMA 2002 2.5 ONE MONTH AGO FROM HER PREVIOUS OWNER I DROVE THE CAR BACK HOME IT WAS SMOOTH AND PERFECT I PUT A TEMPORARY PLATES ON IT TO DO SAFETY AND EMISSION TEST TO IT PUT BEFORE I DO THAT I REPLACED THE OIL IN IT AND AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS I DROVE IT TO DO THE SAFETY CHECKS ON IT SUDDENLY THE CAR WAS MAKING NOISE FROM THE ENGINE WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND I WAS GOING ABOUT 100 AND THE CAR ENGINE SHUTDOWN THANK GOD I CONTROLLED THE CAR ON A HIGHWAY FILLED WITH A LOT OF CARS SO I CALLED A TOWTRUCK TO TAKE IT A WAY FROM THE STREET TO THE GARAGE AND WHEN THE MECHANIC LOOKED AND DID SOME TEST ON IT HE TOLD ME THAT IT NEEDS A NEW ENGINE AND IT COST 1,500 TO BUY AN ENGINE I TOLD HIM ITS IMPOSSIBLE I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR IT CANT BE , I ASKED HIM HOW DID THIS HAPPEN HE TOLD ME THAT THIS CAR HAS A MANUFACTURE PROBLEM THE PROGRAMMING OF THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR GAVE THE ENGINE A WRONG CODES CAUSING THE ENGINE TO OVERHEAT AND TO BURN MORE OIL AND BECAUSE OF THAT THE ENGINE IS DEAD NOW HE TOLD ME TO CALL THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP AND GIVE THEM THE V.I.N NUMBER OF THE CAR I LIVE IN OTTAWA BY THE WAY AND TO ASK IF THERE IS ANY RECALL ON IT SO I DID THAT AND THEY TOLD ME TO CALL THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP IN NORTH AMERICA BECAUSE ITS FROM THERE I DID THAT I SPOKE WITH AN AGENT AND HE TOLD ME YES THERE IS A RECALL ON IT BUT WE CANT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE THE CAR IS NINE YEARS OLD NOW AND THE RECALL HAS ENDED TOW YEARS AGO I TOLD HIM WHY? ITS THE DEALERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY RECALL EVERY DAMAGED CARS OR SOME ONE WILL GET HURT BECAUSE OF IT THAT'S FIRST, SECOND THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND THERE WAS ALOT OF CUSTOMERS HAVING THE SAMETHING SO ITS THE DEALERSHIP FAULT TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERY CAR HAS TO BE SAFE AND PERFECT TO DRIVE IT ESPECIALLY ITS A FAMILY CAR TOO SO ALL IM ASKING IS THAT THEY HAVE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OF THIS AND TO FIX MY CAR AND EVERY CAR THAT HAS A MANUFACTURE PROBLEM IN IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE PLEASE.... *TR
[XXX] [XXX] RE: 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA VIN [XXX] I TOOK MY CAR TO MORIN BROTHERS AUTOMOTIVE ON 2/7/2011 TO HAVE THE 'CHECK ENGINE LIGHT' LOOKED AT . DIAGNOSIS REVEALED A FAILED PRE-CATALYTIC CONVERTER. UPON REMOVAL THE CAT WAS FOUND TO BE PHYSICALLY DAMAGED. BOT WERE REPLACED. SUBSEQUENTLY I DISCOVERED THAT NISSAN OF NORTH AMERICA HAS AN ACTIVE CAMPAIGN OR RECALL COVERING REPLACEMENT OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. (RECALL #'S R3007, R3014, R3015, R3016, R3017) I CONTACTED THE SERVICED DEPARTMENT AT COAST NISSAN IN PERSON AND WAS TOLD THAT SINCE I ALREADY HAD THE CONVERTER REPLACED, THERE WAS NOTHING FURTHER THEY COULD DO FOR ME. I CONTACTED NISSAN CORPORATE OFFICES AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WERE NO OPEN RECALL CAMPAIGNS ON MY CAR. THIS IS WHAT I WANT NISSAN TO DO FOR ME: REIMBURSE ME FOR THE EXPENSE OF RELACING MY CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND OXYGEN SENSOR. VERIFY THAT THE CURRENT PROGRAMMING IN THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE WILL PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. VERIFY THAT THE PROGRAMMING IN THE CONTROL MODULE HAS ALSO BEEN UPDATED TO ADDRESS STALLING ISSUES (RECALL 0712) ASSURE ME IN WRITING THAT SHOULD MY ENGINE BEGIN USING OIL AS A RESULT OF THE FAILURE OF THE CONVERTER, NISSAN WILL REPAIR IT FREE OF CHARGE. *JS INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I GOT A SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT ON AND TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC, HE SAID IT WAS MY ENGINE, AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER(BURNING OIL AND DEBRIS GOING INTO THE ENGINE) AND I NEEDED TO REBUILD IT. HE REBUILT IT AND AFTER ABOUT 7,000 THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED BURNING OIL CONSUMPTION. NOT SURE WHAT TO DO BECAUSE HE SAID THAT NISSAN SHOULD HAVE A FIX FOR THIS AND HE ISN'T FIXING THE PROBLEM EITHER. IT'S SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY WITHOUT A FIX. *TR
2002 NISSAN ALTIMA. CONSUMER REQUESTS REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE EXPENSE OF REPLACING CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND OXYGEN SENSOR *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. WHEN THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE A MECHANIC FOR A DIAGNOSIS, THEY FOUND A STORED CODE P0420; CATALYST SYSTEM EFFICIENCY BELOW THRESHOLD. THEY ERASED THE CODE TO SEE IF IT WOULD RETURN AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER IT RETURNED. ANOTHER DIAGNOSIS REVEALED A FAILED PRE-CATALYTIC CONVERTER. UPON REMOVAL OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER IT WAS FOUND TO BE DAMAGED AS A RESULT OF OVERHEATING. THE FRONT OXYGEN SENSOR WAS ALSO DAMAGED AND BOTH HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE CONSUMER THEN DISCOVERED A RECALL HAD BEEN ISSUED, BUT WHEN HE CONTACTED THE DEALER, THEY INFORMED HIM THAT SINCE HE HAD ALREADY HAD THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACED, THERE WAS NOTHING FURTHER THEY COULD DO FOR HIM, THE CONSUMER THEN CONTACTED NISSAN NORTH AMERICA AND WAS INFORMED THERE WERE NO OPEN RECALLS ON HIS VEHICLE. *JB

NISSAN 02 ALTIMA 2.5S HAS PROBLEM WITH ENGINE/CAT CONVERTER, CAR DEVELOPED A P0420 ERROR AND HAS BEEN ROUTINELY CONSUMING OIL, NOW DEALER HAS DIAGNOSED PROBLEM OF CAT CONVERTER DISINTEGRATING AND GETTING SUCKED INTO ENGINE CAUSING IT TO FAIL, ESTIMATE FOR REPAIR IS ~ $6,000. I HAVE OWNED A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5S SINCE 2003. I BOUGHT VEHICLE WITH 11000 MILES AS A SHORT TERM LEASE TURN BACK. I HAVE DONE ALL REGULAR SERVICE WORK; OIL CHANGES,TIRES, BRAKES ECT. RECENTLY TOOK TO DEALER FOR INSPECTION ON ENGINE NOISE. VEHICLE HAS 113,000 MILES ON IT AT PRESENT TIME. SERVICE WRITER INFORMED ME THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS DISINTEGRATING AND CAUSING THE MATERIALS THAT THIS IS MADE OF TO BE INGESTED INTO ENGINE. CONSEQUENTLY, THE ENGINE NOW NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE DISCOVERED THRU SOME ONLINE RESEARCH AND INQUIRIES, WITH OTHER NISSAN SERVICE DEPARTMENTS, THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THIS VEHICLE FOR THE MODEL YEARS 2002 & 2003. THERE WAS A TSB FOR THIS CAR FOR THE DEALER TO DO A VISUAL INSPECTION ON THE CONVERTER IN 2003. I FEEL THAT A VEHICLE SHOULD NOT NEED AN ENGINE REPLACEMENT DUE TO A DEFECTIVE FACTORY PART. THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE MANUFACTURER DISPLAYS THE VEHICLE BEING TESTED FOR PROLONGED DRIVING . THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE WITH THE AMOUNT OF THESE VEHICLES THAT ARE ON THE ROAD. A CAR OWNER SHOULD NOT BE SUBJECT TO EXTENSIVE REPAIRS DUE TO A FACTORY DEFECTIVE PART. THERE ARE ALOT OF COMPLAINTS POSTED ON THE INTERNET CONCERNING THIS FAULT. *TR
2002 NISSAN ALTIMA HAS ROTTED OUT FLOOR BOARDS ON BOTH SIDES! I CAN SEE THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CARPETING! I HAVE SEEN THIS IN 2 OF 2 CARS THAT I HAVE CHECKED YET THE DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THEY NEVER HEARD OF IT! THEN I WENT INTO THE PARTS DEPARTMENT AND THEY SAID ITS VERY COMMON! I THINK SERVICE DEPARTMENT IS COACHED TO SAY THAT THEY NEVER HEARD OF THE PROBLEM! THIS IS DANGEROUS FOR MANY REASONS! FIRST OF ALL SOMETHING THAT WAS RUN OVER COULD COME INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT! THE CAR IS NOT AS STRONG WHEN THE CHASSIS OF THE CAR IS COMPROMISED! I BELIEVE THIS PROBLEM IS AFFECTING OVER 50% OF THESE VEHICLES! THE DEALER IS ACTING LIKE THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THE PROBLEM AND HAS NO HELP AVAILABLE! I HAVE ALSO HAD TO PUT AN ENGINE IN THIS CAR BECAUSE OF A FACTORY DEFECT! THEY DID A RECALL TO PUT A SHIELD IN BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER BUT THE ENGINE HAS A HOLE IN THE SIDE RIGHT WHERE THEY ALL HAVE A PROBLEM! TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE WARNING LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND THEY DETECTED A FAULTY ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND OXYGEN SENSOR WERE REPLACED. THERE WAS A RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 03V084000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING: EXHAUST SYSTEM: MANIFOLD/HEADER/MUFFLER/TAIL PIPE). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT ELIGIBLE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE EXCEEDED THE WARRANTY. I HAVE AN 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA S 2.5 LITER WITH 95K ON IT. THERE IS HEAVY RUST UNDER THE DRIVERS FLOOR. IT HAS ONLY TAKEN A LITTLE SHORT OF A YEAR TO GO FROM NOTHING TO SOME MAJOR ROT. I AM A PROFESSIONAL DETAILER AND AUTOBODY TECH AND THE CAR HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY WELL MAINTAINED. IT LOOKS AS THOUGH IS A FLAW IN THE DESIGN. I NOTICED IT TODAY WHEN I WAS CHANGING MY OIL AND INSPECTING THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER BROKE AND DAMAGED THE ENGINE. THE ENGINE ALSO BURNED OIL WEEKLY CAUSING THE CONTACT TO ADD OIL EVERY TWO WEEKS. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED CONSTANTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE CONTACT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING $105. THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.
DRIVER SMELLED GASOLINE AT STARTUP. WAS ONLY FAINT AT FIRST, BUT GREW STRONGER OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. ODOR BECAME SO OVERPOWERING THAT DRIVER HAD TO DRIVE WITH WINDOWS OPEN TO VENT FUMES. DRIVER IDENTIFIED GAS DRIPPING FROM FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR VISIBLE ON DRIVER'S SIDE OF ENGINE. DEALER CONFIRMED FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR LEAK, ORDERED REPLACEMENT PART, AND RETURNED VEHICLE TO OWNER STATING THAT IT'S STILL SAFE TO DRIVE. DRIVER CONCERNED OVER POSSIBLE ENGINE FIRE SINCE GAS DRIPS ONTO ENGINE WHILE IT'S RUNNING. DRIVER HAS DISCONTINUED USING VEHICLE UNTIL REPAIR IS MADE. *TR
2002 NISSAN ALTIMA WITH ONLY 80,000 MILES. MY COMPLAINT IS THE SAME COMPLAINT YOU HAVE RECEIVED FROM OTHERS, REGARDING THEIR NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5L ENGINE. EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION/CATALYTIC CONVERTER ISSUES, WHERE THE NISSAN DEALERS SAY WE NEED TOTAL ENGINE REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF OVER $4,000. ON VEHICLES THAT HAVE BEEN MAINTAINED ACCORDING TO SERVICE REQUIREMENTS. I AM AMAZED THAT NISSAN CONTINUES TO GET AWAY WITH THIS. JUST LOOK UP NISSAN ALTIMA ENGINE PROBLEMS, SMOKING, EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION AND YOU'LL SEE ALL THE COMPLAINTS, WITH PEOPLE FROM VARIOUS STATES AMAZED THAT NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT. ESPECIALLY, SINCE THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE A FIRE WHICH WAS NOTED IN NISSAN RECALL ID# 5449. *TR
I HAVE A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA, THAT IS BURNING OIL. I HAVE TO PUT AT LEAST TWO QUARTS OF OIL IN THERE EVERY 2 WEEKS. NOW MY CAR IS SHUTTERING AND HISSING AT ME AND NOT GETTING ANYMORE WHEN I ACCELERATE. I'M BEING TOLD THAT I WILL NEED A NEW CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND POSSIBLY AN ENGINE. THE ENGINE WOULD ALSO EXHIBIT A LOUD, ABNORMAL NOISE WHEN DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER RUINED THE ENGINE WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 03V084000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING: EXHAUST SYSTEM: MANIFOLD/HEADER/MUFFLER/TAIL PIPE) BUT THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 101,000.
2002 NISSAN ALTIMA FLOORBOARD RUST THROUGH. 90,000 MILES, DISCOVERED LARGE HOLE FROM RUST THROUGH ON PASSENGER SIDE FRONT FLOORBOARD. CAR IS WASHED ON NORMAL BASIS AND WAS PARKED IN UNHEATED GARAGE DURING WINTER MONTHS. *TR
WHILE GETTING NEW TIRES PUT ON MY CAR THE MECHANIC NOTICED A LARGE HOLE IN MY PASSENGER SIDE FLOOR. I OWN A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA AND HE MENTIONED THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST CASE ON THIS MODEL OF CAR HE HAD SEEN. UPON FURTHER EXAMINATION IT BECAME CLEAR THAT SOMEONE HAD PLACED TAPE AND SOME TIN TO MASK THE PROBLEM. I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM MY GRANDMA WHO HAD NO IDEA OF SUCH AN ISSUE. SHE HAD BOUGHT IN WHEN IT WAS A YEAR OLD. CLEARLY A CAR THAT AGE SHOULD HAVE NO REASON TO RUST AND HAVE A HOLE IN IT, SINCE I MUST ASSUME THE ORIGINAL OWNERS PLACED THE TIN. EVEN A CAR AT 8 YEARS OLD SHOULD NOT HAVE THE RUST THAT IS FOUND UNDER ONLY THE PASSENGER SIDE AND A HOLE THE SIZE OF A DINNER PLATE. I HAVE RESEARCHED IT ONLINE AND HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS SIMILAR TO MINE FOR THIS MAKE AND MODEL. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING RECURRING ENGINE FAILURES IN WHICH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILED, AND OIL WAS BEING CONSUMED EXCESSIVELY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHERE NUMEROUS REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. VARIOUS REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE, INCLUDING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THE FAILURES CONTINUED. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO HAVE THE ENGINE REBUILT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 03V084000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:MANIFOLD/HEADER/MUFFLER/TAIL PIPE). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
UNDERBODY RUST. AUTO BODY SHOP STATED THIS WAS A VERY UNUSUAL CONDITION FOR A VEHICLE THIS AGE . *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR THE CRANK SHAFT POSITION SENSOR RECALL, BUT THE REPAIR DIDN'T CORRECT THE FAILURE. ON OCTOBER 19, 2010 WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE THE CRANK SENSOR FAILED. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THE FAILURE MIGHT BE CAUSED BY THE CRANK SHAFT POSITION SENSOR. THE VEHICLE WILL BE TOWED TO THE DEALER. REPORT 69622767 WAS FILED WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD ONLY PAY FOR NHTSA RECALL 03V455000, ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING REPAIR ONE TIME. THE CONTACT WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COST. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 60,000.
THE CAR BEGAN TO LOOSE ACCELERATION AND THE ENGINE WOULD KICK AND THEN GAINED THE ACCELERATION BACK. AFTER 20 MILES OF DRIVING STARTED LOOSING ACCELERATION AGAIN AND SHUT OFF ON A UNDER CONSTRUCTION INTERSTATE W/ONE LANE OF TRAFFIC. MY VEHICLE HAS SHUT OFF THREE TIMES WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. OF COURSE, THIS HAS BEEN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS EACH TIME, AND WE HAVE BEEN VERY LUCKY TO AVOID ACCIDENTS. EACH TIME, WE HAVE HAD TO FIND A WAY TO GET THE VEHICLE TO A SAFE LOCATION, AND HAVE IT TOWED. BECAUSE VARIOUS MECHANICS HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO PROPERLY DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, WE HAVE GIVEN UP ON DRIVING THE VEHICLE. WE HAVE NOW BEEN THROUGH THREE ALTERNATORS, A BATTERY, AND SOME WIRING. AFTER HAVING PREVIOUSLY SAID PARTS REPLACED, I DECIDED TO TRY THE DEALER. I DROPPED THE VEHICLE OFF AT THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP ONE MORNING BEFORE WORK. THEY CALLED ME AT WORK AND TOLD ME THAT A BOLT HAD BEEN WELDED TO THE ALTERNATOR, AND THAT IT WOULD COST ME ABOUT $800 TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. THEY ALSO ASSURED MY WIFE THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. I TOLD THEM NOT TO FIX IT. WHEN I WENT TO INSPECT IT MYSELF, IT WAS PLAINLY EVIDENT THAT THE BOLT WAS NOT WELDED TO THE ALTERNATOR, IT WAS JUST NOT FULLY TIGHTENED DOWN. SINCE COMPLAINING TO NISSAN RECALLS ABOUT POOR SERVICE AND THE VEHICLE SHUTTING OFF, I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THERE IS IN FACT A RECALL ON MY YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL, BUT NOT ON MY SPECIFIC VIN. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS A FORMAL INVESTIGATION THAT IS ONGOING OR HAS BEEN RESOLVED. THE CONSUMER STATED DURING A RECENT OIL CHANGE, THE TECHNICIAN NOTICED AN ENORMOUS RUSTED HOLE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE FLOOR PANEL UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE PASSENGER SIDE ALSO HAD A BIG RUSTED SPOT WHERE ANOTHER HOLE WAS DEVELOPING. THE CONSUMER WAS ADVISED BY A REPAIR SHOP TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FLOOR PANEL SINCE IT WAS SO BADLY RUSTED. THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THE DEFECT WAS DUE TO THE ABSENCE OF DRAIN HOLES IN THE FLOOR PAN UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE DRAIN HOLES WERE VISIBLE TO HAVE BEEN OUTLINED, BUT THEY WERE NEVER DRILLED THROUGH. THE CAR INITIALLY USED A LOT OF OIL AND ANTI-FREEZE. BASICALLY WE NEEDED TO PUT A QUART OF OIL AND ANTI-FREEZE IN THE CAR EVERY 100 - 200 MILES. WE HAD THE HEAD GASKET REPLACED AND THIS HELPED WITH THE ANTIFREEZE AND THE OIL BUT AFTER A WHILE IT STARTED TO USE A LOT OF OIL AGAIN. IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE IT WAS GOING THROUGH A QUART OF OIL EVERY 100 MILES OR LESS. MY SON WENT OUT TO RUN SOME ERRANDS AND WHILE DRIVING SMOKE STARTED COMING FROM THE ENGINE AND IT JUST QUIT. UPON LOOKING AT THE ENGINE, HE NOTICED THAT THERE WAS LARGE PUDDLE OF OIL UNDER THE CAR. FORTUNATELY TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT AND NO ONE HIT ME. *TR

IN AUGUST 2010, SHE WAS SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT, IN FIRST GEAR WITH HER FOOT ON THE CLUTCH WHEN THIS OCCURRED, CAUSING THE CAR TO JUMP FORWARD INTO THE BACK OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. AT THE TIME, I FELT THAT HER FOOT MAY HAVE SLIPPED OFF THE CLUTCH INSTEAD, UNTIL IT LOST PRESSURE AGAIN A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO WHILE DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS. I STARTED RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET AND DISCOVERED THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE MODEL EXHIBITING VERY SIMILAR BEHAVIOR. WHEN THIS HAPPENS IN TRAFFIC IT'S DANGEROUS, BECAUSE IT CAN LURCH BY ITSELF OR YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SHIFT INTO GEAR TO MOVE OUT OF THE WAY OF ONCOMING VEHICLES, LIKE IF YOU'RE CROSSING TRAFFIC. IT ALSO INHIBITS THE ABILITY TO DOWNSHIFT WHEN GOING DOWNHILL. NISSAN DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THIS AS A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM, ALTHOUGH MANY PEOPLE HAVE BADGERED THE DEALERSHIPS INTO REPLACING THE CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER AND/OR SLAVE CYLINDER UNDER WARRANTY, AND NISSAN HAS NOT HAD A RECALL FOR THE PROBLEM. MINE IS WAY OUT OF WARRANTY, SO MY ONLY RECOURSE IS TO FILE A FORMAL COMPLAINT SO THAT HOPEFULLY OTHERS WILL NOT BECOME INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AS A RESULT OF FAULTY PARTS OR FLUID BEING USED IN THE CLUTCH SYSTEM. THE GENERAL CONSENSUS IS THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER IS ALLOWING AIR, AND/OR MOISTURE, TO ENTER THE SYSTEM, BUT MOREOVER, THE DOT 3 FLUID THAT IS USED SEEMS TO BE THE MAJOR FACTOR IN THE FAILURE, WHERE AS DOT 4 OR 5.1 SHOULD BE USED INSTEAD. I HAVE NOT DONE ANY REPAIR TO THE CAR SINCE SHE HAS IT AT SCHOOL, BUT I WILL HAVE IT FIXED AS SOON AS I GET IT BACK HOME.

THE ESTIMATE CAME OUT TO A TOTAL OVER $2,000. THIS COMES AS A COMPLETE SURPRISE TO ME, SINCE I HARDLY DRIVE MY VEHICLE AND TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF IT. IT IS KEPT IN A SEALED GARAGE OF A PRIVATE HOUSE. THE VEHICLE ALSO GETS WASHED REGULARLY, ESPECIALLY DURING WINTER MONTHS. WHEN THE FLOOR COVERINGS GET WET DURING THE COLD MONTHS, I TAKE THEM OUT AND DRY THEM BEFORE PLACING THEM BACK IN. THE FRONT TWO WINDOWS IN MY NISSAN ALTIMA ROLL DOWN, BY THEMSELVES, EVERYTIME I TAKE MY KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION! I HAVE TRIED TAKING THE BATTERIES OUT OF BOTH OF MY KEY FOBS, THINKING MAYBE THERE IS A SHORT OR SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY KEY FOBS, BUT MY FRONT TWO WINDOWS STILL ROLL DOWN. I CALLED NISSAN TO ASK THEM ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, AND THEY SAID, THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE NOT TAKEN THE CAR TO NISSAN YET TO GET IT REPAIRED, BECAUSE HONESTLY I CAN NOT AFFORD TO PAY 100 DOLLARS AN HOUR TO HAVE THE CAR SIT ON THE MACHINE TO TEST IT, THEN HOW EVER MUCH IT IS TO FIX THE PROBLEM, WHICH COULD RUN INTO THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. *TR

AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WAS PERFORMING A DIAGNOSTIC TEST ON THE VEHICLE TO DETERMINE WHAT CAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE; HOWEVER, HE STATED THAT THE EXHAUST AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WERE DEFECTIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO CONSUMING OIL EXCESSIVELY. THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONTACT THE VEHICLE NEEDED A NEW CATALYTIC CONVERTER SYSTEM, OXYGEN SENSORS, A NEW ECM REFLASH AND A NEW ENGINE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT SHE WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 78,000.

WE HAVE A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA THAT HAS ABOUT 132XXX MILES ON IT AND IT IS BURNING OIL AT ABOUT 5 QUARTS IN A WEEK. WE HAVE CHANGED THE OIL REGULARLY PRIOR TO THIS PROBLEM STARTING, WHICH WAS ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WERE TOLD WE HAD A CATALYTIC SYSTEM FAILURE AND IT WAS GOING TO COST $900 TO FIX, THEN WE WERE TOLD THAT THE ENGINE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED COSTING UPWARDS OF $4000. I HAVE LOOKED INTO THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND A TON OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM JUST OUTSIDE OF THE "WARRANTY". *TR
CAR SHUTS OF WHILE DRIVING. CAR WILL START IMMEDIATELY AFTER ENGINE HAS SHUT OFF. VERY DANGEROUS ALMOST WRECKED. MY 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA DOESN'T FEEL SAFE. THERE ARE SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED. ALL WHICH COULD CAUSE POTENTIALLY FATAL AND OR SEVERE ACCIDENTS. THE HEAD GASKET BLEW ON MY 2002 2.5 S QR25 4 CYLINDER ENGINE. I HAD THE HEAD GASKET REPLACED AND IT BLEW AGAIN. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION THE HEAD HAD BEEN CRACKED AND THERE WERE THOUSANDS OF MARKS IN CYLINDER 1. ONE OF THE POWER VALVE SCREWS LOCATED IN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD OF THE ENGINE CAME LOOSE AND SHOT THROUGH THE ENGINE, RUINING ENGINE COMPRESSION (IN TURN DESTROYING THE ENGINE) AND IT ALSO DESTROYED THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD, O2 SENSOR AND POWER VALVE INTAKE AND POWER VALVE PLATES. THE ESTIMATE TO REPAIR THIS IS OVER 6000. APPARENTLY ONE OF POWER VALVE SCREWS HAD GOTTEN LOOSE AND WAS BANGING AROUND THE ENGINE. APPARENTLY THIS CAN RUIN THESE ENGINES. I EXPERIENCE POWER LOSS BECAUSE OF THIS. MY CAR HAS STALLED SEVERAL TIMES NEARLY CAUSING A SEVERE ACCIDENT EACH TIME. THE VEHICLE STARTS RIGHT UP IMMEDIATELY AFTER IT STOPS. BESIDES THE COST TO REPAIR THESE ISSUES IT IS VERY CONCERNING DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. IT IS DEFINITELY UNSAFE AND SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO BE MASS PRODUCED IN MY OPINION . I BELIEVE MANY OTHERS WOULD AGREE. THE IS A VOLUNTARY SERVICE CAMPAIGN ON THE 04 AND 05 MODELS, BUT 02 AND 03 OWNERS HAVE THE EXACT SAME ENGINE AND ARE EXPERIENCING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS. ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THESE RECALLS? IT'S RIDICULOUS AND SOMEONE WILL GET HURT OR KILLED IF THESE ISSUES AREN'T ADDRESSED. NISSAN SHOULD BE REQUIRED BY LAW TO FIX THESE ISSUES. T HE RESULTS ARE VERY SIMILAR TO TOYOTAS RECENT PROBLEMS WHICH KILLED SEVERAL. APPARENTLY NISSAN IS TRYING TO USE SOME KIND OF LOOPHOLE BY VOLUNTEERING A SERVICE CAMPAIGN.
