WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH ON A DOWN HILL SLOPE ENGINE SEIZED. AS A RESULT, POWER STEERING AND BRAKES FAILED. *AK
THE STEERING ON THE 2004 MURANO IS HEAVY BUT THE REALL PROBLEM OCCURRED THE OTHER DAY WHEN ANOTHER CAR WAS NOT LOOKING WHERE THEY WERE GOING AND I TRIED TO SWING OUT OF THE WAY AND THE POWER ASSIST WAS JUST NOT THERE, I COULD NOT TURN THE WHEEL HARD ENOUGH FORTUNATE THE OTHER CAR HEAR MY HORN AND JUST MISSED ME. *AK
COMPLAINT RECEIVED VIA E-MAIL. ON THE MORNING OF SEPTEMBER 16, 2004 I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 35 OR 40 MPH ON HIGHWAY 680 SOUTH AT HIGHWAY 101 INTERCHANGE NEAR SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA WHEN I HAD TO RAPIDLY TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO MY LEFT TO AVOID REAR ENDING A CAR IN FRONT OF ME. DURING THE RETURN MOTION OF THE WHEELS I UNEXPECTEDLY LOST POWER STEERING BOOST. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO ACT VERY QUICKLY, AND FORCED THE STEERING WHEEL BACK TO WHERE IT BELONGED. IN DOING SO I AVOIDED A CERTAIN COLLISION WITH THE CAR ON MY LEFT LANE. AS THE RESULT OF THIS INCIDENT, I HURT MY LEFT WRIST. LATER, AT A PARKING LOT, I TRIED TO RECREATE THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING I HAD ENCOUNTERED BY RAPIDLY TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL HALF A TURN TO THE LEFT AND THEN TO THE RIGHT AND EVERY TIME THE POWER STEERING BOOST FAILED. THE SYSTEM APPEARED TO BE NORMAL UNTIL THE DRIVER HAD TO EXECUTE A MANEUVER TO AVOID A ROAD HAZARD. THAT WAS WHEN THE SYSTEM FAILED, AND BY THEN IT MAY BE TOO LATE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. FROM INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM VARIOUS FORUMS ON THE INTERNET (E.G. NISSAN MURANO AND CONSUMER REPORTS MAGAZINE, THIS PROBLEM APPEARED TO BE VERY REAL AND VERY COMMON WITH ALL 2003 AND 2004 NISSAN MURANO VEHICLES, AND THEREFORE IT REPRESENTED A CLEAR SAFETY HAZARD THAT NEEDED TO BE ADDRESSED AND FIXED BEFORE ANY LIVES WERE LOST. *AK
THE REAR HATCH OF MY 2004 NISSAN MURANO SE HAS A HYDRAULIC LIFT THAT CAUSES THE REAR HATCH TO MOVE TO A FULLY OPENED POSITION WITHOUT ANY HUMAN ASSISTANCE (BEYOND PULLING ON THE EXTERNAL REAR HATCH LEVER TO INITIATE THE PROCESS).*AK ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2004, THE REAR HATCH HYDRAULICS FAILED ON 5 SEPARATE OCCASIONS TO LIFT THE HATCH OPEN BY MORE THAN A FEW INCHES. WHEN I MANUALLY LIFTED THE HATCH TO AN OPEN POSITION, THE TOP CENTER EDGE OF THE HATCH CAUGHT ON THE REAR CENTER EDGE OF THE ROOF, CAUSING BODY DAMAGE. MORE IMPORTANTLY, NOW THE HATCH WILL DOES NOT OPEN FULLY WITH ANY CONSISTENCY, EITHER AUTOMATICALLY OR MANUALLY DUE TO THE BODY DAMAGE. WHEN THE DAMAGED REAR HATCH TOP EDGE CATCHES ON THE REAR CENTER EDGE OF THE ROOF, ANYBODY TRYING TO EXIT THE VEHICLE THROUGH THE REAR WILL HAVE DIFFICULTY SQUEEZING THROUGH THE OPENING. I'M TRYING TO GET A NISSAN DEALERSHIP TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE (SURPRISE, SURPRISE, THEY ARE TRYING TO EXCLUDE COVERAGE FOR REPAIRING THE DAMAGE FROM THE VEHICLE WARRANTY), BUT THOUGHT NHTSA SHOULD BE AWARE OF THE REAR HATCH FAILURE AND THE POTENTIAL FOR TRAPPING PEOPLE IN THE REAR.
ALTERNATOR FAILED. *AK PE04077_CAT
WHILE DRIVING BATTERY LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD, VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP,AND TECHNICIAN DETERMINED ALTERNATOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK
ON THE EVENING OF AUG 4, 2004, I WAS DRIVING HOME, NOTICED THAT THE BATTERY AND BRAKE LIGHT WERE ILLUMINATED ON MY NEW (6500 MILES) NISSAN MURANO. I PLANNED TO TAKE IT TO THE LOCAL DEALER THE NEXT DAY, AS SOON AS I COMPLETED TWO UNCHANGEABLE APPOINTMENTS. AS I STARTED TO LEAVE THE PARKING LOT ON THE SECOND APPOINTMENT, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. I CALLED THE DEALER AND MY HUSBAND, WHO CAME TO GET ME. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED. DIAGNOSIS: FAILED ALTERNATOR. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I WAS NOT HAPPY. THEY HAD TO ORDER THE PART, AND THE REPAIR WAS FINISHED ON THE FOLLOWING TUESDAY, AUG 10. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID HE HAD PREVIOUSLY HAD 4 OR SO FAILED ALTERNATORS, AND DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY NISSAN HAD NOT RECALLED THE VEHICLES. THE REPAIR HAS BEEN FINE, THE DEALERSHIP LOANED ME A VEHICLE, EVEN THOUGH I BOUGHT IT OUT OF TOWN. THEN I STARTED TO CHECK THE INTERNET, AND FOUND THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF ALTERNATOR FAILURES. I AM THANKFUL THAT MINE HAPPED IN A LOCAL PARKING LOT INSTEAD OF ON THE ROAD. *AK
DT: THE CONSUMER'S VEHICLE SWERVED TO HIT DEBRIS IN THE ROADWAY. THE DEBRIS STRUCK THE GAS TANK, RESULTING IN A GAS LEAK. 18 GALLONS OF GAS SPILLED FROM THE TANK. NO FIRES OR INJURIES REPORTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER AND THE GAS TANK WAS REPLACED. NO PROBLEMS WITH THE GAS TANK SINCE REPLACEMENT OF GAS TANK. THE CONSUMER PAID OUT OF POCKET FOR THE REPAIRS.*AK *NM
IMMEDIATELY AFTER PURCHASING 2 SEPARATE 2004 MURANOS AROUND THE MIDDLE OF JULY 2004, WE HAD THE DRIVER-SIDE DOORS ON BOTH VEHICLES INTERMITTENTLY LOCK ABOUT 20% OF THE TIME. THE ENGINE CAN BE RUNNING OR NOT, THE KEY CAN BE IN THE IGNITION WITH THE ENGINE OFF, OR THE KEY CAN BE OUT OF THE IGNITION ENTIRELY. THREE SEPARATE FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN SEVERAL TIMES EACH ON BOTH CARS. FORTUNATELY, THERE HAVE BEEN NO DIRE CONSEQUENCES YET. I HAVE WALKED HOME FROM THE MAIL BOX TO GET THE SECOND KEY. MY WIFE AND HER FATHER HAVE BEEN AT A GAS STATION AND COULD ENTER THE CAR THROUGH ONE OF THE BACK DOORS. POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUES: BEING COMPLETELY LOCKED OUT OF THE VEHICLE ON A ROAD IN THE DESERT WITH NO WATER AND UNABLE TO GET INTO THE CAR; MY WIFE BEING OUT ALONE AT NIGHT AND UNABLE TO GET INTO THE CAR FOR HER CELL PHONE TO CALL FOR HELP; A CHILD OR ANIMAL BEING LOCKED IN THE CAR IN THE HIGH HEAT IN THE ARIZONA DESERT (AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A REAL TRAGEDY). WE HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES AND TAKEN THE CARS INTO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. OUR SERVICE MANAGER SAID HE BELIEVED IT WAS A DESIGN FLAW. APPARENTLY THERE HAD BEEN A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH THE 2003 MURANOS, BUT NISSAN SAYS THIS HAS BEEN FIXED ON THE 2004 MODELS. IT HASN'T BEEN FIXED ON OURS. NISSAN'S CUSTOMER SERVICE CLAIMS THERE HAVE BEEN NO OTHER COMPLAINTS AND THAT WE (THE CONSUMER) WERE THE PROBLEM. IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THREE SEPARATE PERSONS ON TWO DIFFERENT CARS ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS HAVE THE SAME ISSUE IF THERE IS NOT A PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. AND THIS IS WITH ALL OF US BEING MINDFUL OF THE PROBLEM AND BEING CAREFUL HOW WE CLOSE THE DOOR. AS A LAST RESORT, I HAVE WRITTEN A LETTER TO MR. CARLOS GHOSN, CEO OF NISSAN, N.A. APPRISING HIM OF OUR DIFFICULTY AND OF OUR INABILITY TO GET ANY HELP WHATSOEVER FROM NISSAN. IN SHORT, NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. NO REPAIR HAS BEEN MADE. NISSAN HAS ESSENTIALLY INFORMED US THAT THEY DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM, WE DO. CAN YOU HELP? *AK
THE BRAKE PEDAL DROPS SO LOW THAT YOU FOOT HITS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAUSING THE AUTOMOBILE TO LEAP FORWARD RESULTING IN NEAR ACCIDENT WITH OTHER AUTO AND I ONE CASE NEARLY STRIKING A PEDESTRIAN. THIS HAS HAPPEN FIVE TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED THE NISSAN MURANO 2004. I HAVE CALLED NISSAN MOTOR AND THEY REFURED ME TO NISSAN OF ST. CHARLES. THE ASSISTANT SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME ON THE PHONE THAT THEY BLED THE BRAKES AND THE CONDITION STILL EXISTED AND THAT THE CHECK OTHER SIMILAR MODEL AND THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL DROPPED LOWER WHEN CONTINUING TO APPLY PRESSER. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR, THE SERVICE MANAGER WROTE ON MY SERVICE TICKET "CONDITION NOT FOUND". THE BRAKE PEDAL STILL DROPS NEARLY TO THE FLOOR WHEN YOU APPLY CONTINUED PRESSURE. IT IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. I HAVE CALLED NISSAN AND TALKED TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AT NISSAN OF ST. CHARLES ABOUT THE PROBLEM BUT GET NO RESPONSE.*AK
THE VEHICLE SHIFTS OUT OF PARK WITHOUT THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION. THE CAUSE HAS YET TO BE DETERMINED. PLEASE PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH CONSUMER NOTICED THAT THE BATTERY AND BRAKE LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD AND REMAINED ON. CONSUMER APPLIED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND REPLACED THEM. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM RECURRED. *AK PE04077_CAT
WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH AND WITHOUT ANY WARNING VEHICLE STALLED/ LOST POWER. CONSUMER HAD TO STRUGGLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO THE SHOULDER. THEN, CONSUMER CALLED THE DEALER, WHO ADVISED HIM TO CALL THE MANUFACTURER.*AK
THE DASHBOARD STARTED SMOKING WHERE THE AIR CONDITIONING UNIT/ THE NAVIGATION DEVICE/ STEREO SYSTEM, AND OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS WERE MOUNTED. DEALERSHIP INDICATED THAT THE SMOKE OCCURRED BECAUSE OF AN ELECTRICAL SHORT. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED ALL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS LOCATED BEHIND THE DASHBOARD PANEL. THE CAUSE OF THE ELECTRICAL SHORT WAS UNDETERMINED. *AK
ALTERNATOR FAILURE AT 4000 MILES ON 2004 NISSAN MURANO. *AK
GAS TANK PLACEMENT AND DESIGN IS POORLY ENGINEERED, PROMOTING THE OPPORTUNITY FOR CATASTROPHIC INCIDENTS WHEN THE DRIVER IS NOT AT FAULT. DEATH TO INNOCENT VICTIMS CAN OCCUR WITH NO COLLISION IN NEAR IDEAL CONDITIONS. *AK SPECIFICALLY, THE DESIGN OF THE GAS TANK AND EXPOSURE TO ROAD HAZARDS IS A MAJOR SAFETY FLAW. THE GAS TANK IS PLASTIC (NOT UNUSUAL TODAY) AND OPEN TO OBJECTS THAT CAN FLY OFF THE FRONT RIGHT WHEEL. THE FRONT OF THE GAS TANK IS OPENLY EXPOSED, WITH NO PROTECTION TO PREVENT THE PUNCTURE OF THE GAS TANK, UNKNOWING TO THE DRIVER, LEADING TO POTENTIAL DEATH. MY PARTICULAR INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE TURNING LEFT THROUGH AN INTERSECTION. I HEARD A SUDDEN NOISE, LIKE SOMETHING LARGE WAS ROLLING AROUND IN THE CARGO AREA AND BANGED AGAINST THE SIDE, BUT WE HAD NO CARGO. I STOPPED AND SURVEYED THE CAR TO FIND A PIECE OF REBAR ABOUT 2' LONG HANGING DOWN UNDER THE CAR, JUST IN FRONT OF THE RIGHT REAR TIRE. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION THE REBAR WAS STICKING OUT OF THE SIDE OF THE GAS TANK, LEAKING GAS. AFTER EVALUATING WHAT LOOKED TO BE A FREAK INCIDENT, ONLY 5 DAYS AFTER I BOUGHT THIS BRAND NEW CAR, IT BECAME APPARENT HOW POOR THE DESIGN WAS, SIMPLY FROM THE PLACEMENT OF THE GAS TANK, AND IT'S EXPOSURE. I CONCLUDED THIS WASN'T SUCH A FREAK INCIDENT, GIVEN THE OPEN TARGET THE GAS TANK IS TO ROAD DEBRIS. SOMEBODY'S GOING TO DIE SOMEDAY BECAUSE OF THE POOR DESIGN UNLESS THE MANUFACTURER FIXES THIS. IT'S SIMPLY A BAD DESIGN THAT COULD EASILY BE FIXED WITH A PIECE OF SHEET METAL TO COVER THE OPEN CAVITY UNDER THE CAR THAT MAKES THE FRONT SIDE OF THE GAS TANK A PERFECT TARGET FOR ROCKS, METAL, PARKING BERMS, ETC. I GUARANTEE THIS WILL NOT BE THE ONLY COMPLAINT ABOUT THE OPEN EXPOSURE TO THIS GAS TANK IN THE NISSAN MURANO. I'M A PRETTY SAFE DRIVER, AND I'VE NEVER HAD SUCH A THING HAPPEN. THE FACT IT HAPPENED ON THE 5TH DAY OF OWNERSHIP TELLS ME SOMETHING. IT'S NOT JUST BAD LUCK, IT'S A BAD DESIGN FROM A SAFETY POINT OF VIEW.
HEARD NOISE FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT. UPON INVESTIGATION NOTICED IDLE PULLEY WAS VIBRATING AND MAKE THE SOUND. I INVESTIGATED ONLINE AT WWW.NISSANMURANO.ORG FOR SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I FOUND A SERIES OF REPORTS THAT THE BRACKET THAT HOLDS THE IDLE PULLEY WAS BROKEN. I DISASSEMBLE THE PULLEY AND FOUND THE BRACKET BROKEN. UPON EXAMINATION OF HOW THE BRACKET BROKE SEEM THAT THE BRACKET IS UNDERDESIGNED. THE CRACK SEEMS TO INDICATE THAT THE BRACKET BROKE BY BENDING FATIGUE. I SAVED ALL THE BRACKET PIECES AND I GOING TO EVALUATE UNDER A MICROSCOPE. THE FAILURE TO THIS IDLE PULLEY COULD LEAD TO AN ALTERNATOR NOT PROVIDING ENERGY TO THE CAR AND A MORE SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES. *NM
ALL DOOR LOCKS QUIT WORKING. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENED AT ONCE. MY FAMILY AND I CAN NOT LOCK OR UNLOCK DOORS.
I DON'T KNOW THE EXACT DATE THIS PROBLEM STARTED SO I HAVE ESTIMATED IT BELOW. THE CAR, WHEN THOROUGHLY WARMED UP (1/2 HOUR OF CONTINUOUS HIGHWAY DRIVING) DOES NOT RESPOND TO THE GAS PEDAL WHEN IN DEAD STOP AND GO TRAFFIC (LIKE AT A TOLL BOOTH) DEPRESSSING THE GAS PEDAL A NORMAL AMOUNT BRINGS NO RESPONSE FROM THE CAR, NO REVING, NO MOTION. DEPRESSING THE PEDAL FURTHER CAUSES THE CAR TO SURGE AHEAD IN A FAST OUT OF CONTROL MANNER. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN THE WINTER, SPRING SUMMER AND FALL ONLY. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT IS UNABLE TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM, THEY SAY, BECAUSE THEIR SERVICE COMPUTER IS NOT GENERATING ANY PROBLEM CODES.
I BOUGHT A NEW NISSAN MURANO 2004 MODEL IN FEBRUARY 7TH 2004 AND MET WITH AN ACCIDENT ON 29TH MARCH 2004 ...THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS ...I WANT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE NOT OPENING OF AIRBAGS IN MY CAR AT THE TIME OF ACCIDENT...I CALLED NISSAN THEY GOING TO LOOK INTO ..AFTER FOLLWING FOR MORE THAN TWO MONTHS THEY CAM BACK WITH A REPLY ..THEY COULDN'T SEE MY CAR BCOZ OF LAPSE OF THIER GUYS ..AND NOW THE CAR IS ALREDAY IN YARD AND THEY CANT FIND IT..I TRIED TO REPORT THIS TO POLICE BUT SINCE THE CARS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WERE TOTALLED ALTHOUGH BOTH OF US GUYS WERE SEEMED TO BE OK AT THAT TIME. MULTIPLE PROBLEMS - TRANSMISSION LEAK & REPLACEMENT; TRANSFER CASE REPLACEMENT; ROTORS OUT OF ROUND @8200 MILES AND CUT; NOW BRAKES DO NOT HAVE EASY STOP (IE FOR IN TRAFFIC) ONLY MIDDLE PEDAL AND HARD STOP BUT DEALER SAYS THEY ARE W/IN SPEC BUT ADMIT THAT SPEC IS SUBJECTIVE TO MY TRUCK VS "OTHERS"; ELEC CABLE TO AIRBAG TWISTED & REPLACED, AC NOT CHARGED 2X (AFTER ENGINE DROPPED TO REPLACE TRANNY), TRUCK DOES NOT START ALL THE TIME (CURRENT PROBLEM). OTHERS -I'M SURE THERE'S JUST BEEN TOO MANY TO REMEMBER. BASICALLY DEALER HAS TOUCHED EVERY MAJOR COMPONENT OF MY TRUCK EXCEPT THE REAR END. CALL TO DISCUSS DETAILS IF NEEDED. *AK
WE BOUGHT A NEW 2004 MURANO END OF OCTOBER OF THIS YEAR - SINCE THEN NOTHING BUT MAJOR PROBLEM. WHILE DRIVING ALONG AT 60-65 - 5 TIMES THE CAR HAS SEEMED TO COME OUT OF GEAR AND SLOWING US TO A SLOW PACE THEN NO PACE OR POWER - FORTUNATELY WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. WE PULL CAR OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD - TURN CAR OFF THEN BACK ON AND NO PROBLEMS AT LEAST FOR AWHILE. WE NEVER KNOW WHEN IT WILL COME OUT OF GEAR OR DOWNSHIFT WITHIN SEONDS LEAVING US WITH NO POWER - NEEDLESS TO SAY A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. DEALER HAS ATTEMPTED TO FIND PROBLEM - EVEN CHANGING THE TCM -(TANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE - WHATEVER THAT IS) THEY SAY UNTIL THEY CAN CAPTURE THE CODES - WHEN PROBLEM OCCURRS - THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT'S WRONG. ASIDE FROM THIS SERIOUS FLAW - WE LOVE OUR MURANO - WE JUST WANT IT FIXED. WE'LL DROP IT OFF AGAIN TO THE DEALER TOMOOW FOR THE 5TH TIME - I FEEL THEY WILL BE OF LITTLE HELP - ALTHOUGH THEY ARE TRYING. I'M NOT SURE WHERE WE WILL TURN NEXT WITH THIS PROBLEM - I GUESS I COULD PURSUE LEMON LAW BUT I REALLY DON'T WANT TO - I JUST WANT THE CAR FIXED AND SAFE! I WANTED TO ALERT OTHERS IN CASE THIS PROBLEM EXTENDS TO OTHER MURANO'S AS WELL. WE HAVE 2,000 MILES ON OUR MURANO AND SACRIFICED GREATLY TO PURCHASE IT - WHAT A MAJOR DISSAPPOINTMENT. THE QUALITY OF MY 2004 NISSAN MURANO IS NOT UP TO PAR WITH NISSAN VEHICLES. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS SINCE I PURCHASED IT THE END OF OCTOBER. THE VEHCILE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER 12 TIMES FOR VARIOUS ISSUES. IE WINDOW RATTLE, WINDOW NOISES, DRIVERS SEAT LOOSE, STEARING RACK BOLTS WERE LOOSE, LOOSE EMERGENCY BRAKE CABLE. *AK

VEHICLE'S BRAKE PEDAL IS HIGHER THAN THE GAS PEDAL. *TS THE CONSUMER HAS TO LIFT HIS FOOT UP OFF THE GAS AND UP AND OVER TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE CONSUMER FEELS THAT THIS CONDITION ADDS TO BRAKING TIME AND RESULTS IN EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. THE DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED OF THIS PROBLEM BUT THEY CLAIM THAT THIS IS THE DESIGN OF THE VEHICLE. *NM
2004 NISSAN MURANO WITH BAD BRAKE REPAIR. CONSUMER STATED THAT THE BRAKES WERE MORE NOISY AFTER THE REPAIR THEN WHEN THE VEHICLE WENT IN FOR REPAIR. DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WILL RETURN HER CALLS. *KB
