NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2022 Polestar Polestar 2. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Recent software update has not resolved recall 25V280000 that referred to rear camera not working properly in reverse. Problems have persisted (Camera Unavailable) while backing up.
Reverse camera does not or intermittently displays video and is unreliable. This makes reversing unsafe, since obstacles like people can not be seen. This problem is known and widepread among owners of this car. This component has be recalled as a software update, however that has been unaffective.
The review camera when placing the car in reverse intermittently does not work, even after the latest recall was completed.
Rear view camera display often glitches out. Sometimes even showing a 360 view instead of the backup camera. This is gotten WORSE since the last software upgrade, 3.6.4. This has happened across many days and instances. Maybe unrelated, sometimes I get random camera views pop up into my tablet when I’m driving normally down the road. Super weird
Received a recall notice Recall 25V-280 related to the backup camera and rear visibility. On July 9, 2025 I took the vehicle to the Polestar repair facility in Westport CT for the identified software update. Before the the recall fix I received the "camera is temporarily unavailable" message approximately every one in ten backups and I could restore the camera view manually (push camera on main screen). After the repair the "camera is temporarily unavailable" appears more than half time and I cannot restore the camera manually. The repair has made the problem much worse.
Despite getting the new software update intended to resolve the prior recall, my car will still consistently fail to show the rear camera view while backing up. Unfortunately Polestar did not resolve this issue with the 3.6.4 software update.
Following software update noted in recall information, backup camera still fails to display when vehicle is put into reverse regularly. Vehicle displays "camera not available" or displays 360 camera view rather than rear more often than not when starting reverse from park.
Occasionally receive “Camera Not Available” screen when entering Reverse. Also occasional lag/stutter with backup camera. This is after addressing multiple recalls for this issue.
The backup camera connected to the infotainment system only works sporadically. 70% of the time it works, 25% of the time it will come back and State that the backup camera is not available, and the other 5% of the time the screen just keeps glitching. After almost a year of this issue there was a recall to correct the problem. The OTA update was applied a few weeks ago but the problem has not been corrected and still persist. This creates a huge safety risk as sometimes the screen just freezes. It is not reliable to tell if there is anything behind me for these reasons.
BACKUP CAMERA SHOWS CAMERA NOT AVALABLE EVEN AFTER THE LATEST UPDATE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO FIX IT
After applying manufacturer’s recall fix for “rear camera temporarily unavailable,” rear backup camera continues to be inoperative at times. Update 3.6.4 was applied by the dealer. This is most recent upgrade that was to correct this problem. Error has occurred several times but intermittent since update.
Despite receiving the recent software update intended to fix ongoing issues with the backup camera, the center stack remains woefully inadequate, hardware-wise, to properly handle all of the vehicle data. Sometimes now, the reverse camera is fine until halfway during my backup procedure when I'm halfway out in traffic and it suddenly shuts off. If anything the unpredictable nature of the failures makes this a worse problem than before. Before the software update I could at least sit in the car for a minute or two and then try backing up and it would work most of the time. Now, it works a good amount of the time but randomly fails.
Multiple instances of the rear camera not appearing or improperly displaying the 360° instead of reverse camera when backing up or when the car is placed into reverse
Since release, the Polestar two has had subpar backup camera experiences. It glitches, stops working, is slow to come up. Polestar has issued 2 safety recalls about it and neither one has given me a fully working backup camera. I have the model year 2022 Polestar 2, which I got in September of 2022 and this has been an ongoing issue. The software recall released in June of 2025 did not fix anything for me. It might be slightly better, meaning my camera now works 60 to 70% of the time. This is a problem with this car as the rear visibility is awful.
The rearview camera often does not turn on while in reverse. The vehicle received the software update to fix this issue due to the recall. But the issue persists after the update was installed. The software patch did not solve this problem.
There was an earlier recall for the reverse camera failing while vehicle is put in reverse, which was fixed by a recent software update. While the frequency of the issue is reduced after update, it is still occurring randomly when car is reversing out of garage, instead of rear camera view, vehicle screen displays "Camera Temporarily Unavailable" message.
I am on car software version 3.6.4 which is above the recall notice. The notice says if you are on this software no recall is needed, but my rear backup camera still fail to come on all the time....
I received the latest software update 3.6.4 but I still have the issue with the backup camera becoming unavailable and not showing behind the car. It is not as frequent, but it is still occurring.
My Polestar 2 was updated to software version 3.6.4 to address an issue with the rear view camera being unavailable when moving in reverse. This was supposed to solve a Safety Recall Notice, but today was the third time since the software update was applied that I received the Camera Unavailable error. This is in response to NHTSA RECALL 25V-280.
My car received the update Polestar said they would push out (3.6.4 is what I’m currently running) and I’m still having issues with the rear camera not working, and to be honest it’s like it’s actually gotten worse. I’m also having issues with other parts of the software of my car that I wasn’t before that’s requiring me to reboot the infotainment system more than I was before. It’s almost like the car doesn’t have enough processing power for the system to work effectively now. I called Polestar and they said I could book a service appointment and take it in which would be fine if the nearest service center wasn’t two and a half to three hours away from where I live (I live in Oklahoma City and the closest place I can take it to is to the Volvo dealership in Grapevine outside of Dallas as the Volvo dealership in Oklahoma City refuses to service it or even look at it even though both Volvo and Polestar use the same program VIDA for anything with their vehicles). They offered to come get my car and tow it down to Grapevine free of charge, but refused to give me a loaner vehicle while they had my vehicle, and that isn’t something I can do (as I drive at least 50 miles everyday to get to and for work). It’s very disappointing that a company that is part of another company that prides itself on safety and invented the seatbelt cannot get anything software related to work correctly.
Rear-view camera sometimes does not work at all or is delayed when vehicle is put in reverse.
The rear view camera issue associated with Manufacturer Recall Number RP1056 has not been resolved after the update associated with this recall. My camera still states unavailable when putting the car into reverse. I am currently on polestar software 3.6.4
Even after updating to 3.6.4 software, the rear view camera remains unreliable. Currently the cameras are not working at all, any of them. Polestar will tell us to restart the UI and that may or may not fix the issue.
Rear camera fails to load even after recall software update. If loads sometimes will flicker/stutter/freeze
The backup camera is often reported as being temporarily unavailable. This has been an ongoing issue with the software and the latest software update was supposed to fix it and it is still occurring on my vehicle regularly.
My vehicle's rear view camera often fails to activate when I shift the transmission into reverse. Instead of displaying the camera feed, the infotainment system presents a persistent message stating, 'Camera is temporarily unavailable.' This issue significantly impairs my ability to safely maneuver the vehicle in reverse, increasing the risk of collision with objects or pedestrians due to the lack of visual information typically provided by the rear view camera system. This occurred after the second recall was performed for the issue.
Rear view camera flickers and cuts out when in reverse.
Even on latest software update rear view camera is unreliable. Flickers and says “Camera is unavailable”
The backup camera constantly fails and malfunctions. When I put the car into reverse gear, the screen that's supposed to show the backup camera footage just displays "Camera is temporarily unavailable" on a black screen (see pictures I uploaded). It is not a one-time occurrence and happens repeatedly, especially when just starting the car. I looked online and many polestar 2 users have the same issue with the backup camera even after installing the latest software (which I did as well and did nothing to fix the backup camera issue). It is likely an infotainment system issue with the processor being too slow which seriously needs to be fixed. Yes, the car is available for inspection upon request. It clearly puts my safety and others at risk since I don't have backup camera visibility when backing up. This is especially dangerous when I try to back out in parking lots with pedestrians walking because I cannot see them without the backup camera. No, the vehicle has not been inspected There were no warning lights, just the black screen showing "Camera is temporarily unavailable"
I continue to see the message that the camera is not available when backing and or parking. The earlier recall and software fix has failed. Running version 3.6.4
Even after the most recent software update to 3.6.4 the ream camera only works about 60 percent of the time.
When in reverse, the center display should display a live feed of the rear view camera, but the rear view camera very often displays a "Camera is temporarily unavailable" screen, which is an extremely dangerous failure while in reverse.
Monday, June 30, 2025 at 12:58 Eastern, I backed out of my garage and my car initially showed the rear-view backup camera. Within about 5 seconds, while I was still backing out, the camera cut out completely and displayed a message about the camera being temporarily unavailable. I waited several seconds - maybe 10 - and the camera came back on. This happens a fair amount. I've received Polestar's 3.6.4 update that supposedly has a fix. Unfortunately, the new update leads to this problem occurring 90% of the time versus the previous 15%.
software update 3.6.4 did not fix backup camera issue, still shows as "not available"
The reverse camera is still problematic even after software update that was supposed to fix it. “Camera unavailable” message consistently shows up while reversing. The infotainment system is dangerously slow, it can take multiple seconds between tap pin and the screen responding. This is insane for a car whose whole controls are in the screen and leads to distractions.
During backup the car, most of the time me the camera is temporarily unavailable.
OTA update was installed to fix backup camera issue, however this is still unresolved: Photos attached
When I put the car in reverse, I occasionally get a blank backup camera screen with an error message that reads, "backup camera temporarily unavailable." This is a longstanding issue that Polestar has attempted to fix through software updates, including the recent 3.6.4 OTA software update offered as the technical fix for a recall specifically for this issue. My car received that software update about two weeks ago, and the unavailable camera problem has persisted.
Randomly the rear camera is unavailable, a software fix was supposed to solve this issue and was applied to my vehicle and it's still having the same error.
Intent of the recent recall was to make the rear view camera reliable, but it has not improved and often (30-40 percent of the time) shows "Camera Is Unavailable".
When I put the car in reverse I received a warning “Camera Temporarily Unavailable.” The backup camera did not work. This has happened multiple times since the software was updated to version 3.6.4 and as recently as this morning.
I just got the 3.6.4 update a couple weeks before receiving the recall letter from Polestar. To my surprise, the car is presenting the “Camera unavailable” way more often after the “fix”. Getting in my car and backing up, I get this error about 3 out of 5 drives, which is super dangerous. I have a toddler at home and feel I’m entitled to have a working backup camera as a safety device. Reddit has plenty of evidence that Polestar did nothing to fix the issue with this update: [XXX] Thank you. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I recently received the new update (version 3.6.4) for our Polestar 2 that was supposed to fix the issue (recall 25V-280) of the rear view camera not working. It did not fix the issue in the safety recall. Since the update the rear view camera works even less often than it did before. I either get a black screen that says the camera is temporarily unavailable, or it displays the 360 view. It happens every day more often than not.
Rear backup camera is unreliable, even after the latest software update. It does not always turn on when going into reverse, instead displaying a "camera unavailable" message.
After the recent update to 3.6.4 my backup camera has failed about 20% of the time. This did not happen as often on the previous version of 3.4.4
My car has exhibited the "camera not available " for the rear camera infrequently, and despite this being addressed in a recall in the 3.6.3 software update, I still received a "camera not available " message today in normal operating conditions, on software 3.6.4. This issue seems to stem from the computer hardware used in earlier models of the Polestar 2, which presents a safety issue. Polestar should be required to replace this compute unit with the one used in more recent cars, where they clearly addressed this issue and are trying to brush this under the rug for early customers. Considering this is a mandatory requirement on all cars in the US produced since 2018, the decision to cheap out and use a cheap processing unit is inexcusable. This system should have been designed to have its own dedicated sub-system, just like the low latency system required for core car functions.
Despite completing the 3.6.4 version OTA update for the most recent recall, the vehicle still sometimes unable to turn on the rear camera when I shift to reverse. It shows the message "camera not available". That software update does not fix the issue and Polestar needs more attention to this issue because it's a safety concern.
Backup camera not working. Says not available when backing up.
Reverse camera consistent either “Not Available” or image freezes.
The rare backup camera sometimes doesn’t come on when the car is put into Reverse. I am on latest software version 3.6.4
