There are 7 owner-reported visibility & wipers complaints for the 2022 Polestar Polestar 2in NHTSA's database. These are unverified consumer reports and may not reflect confirmed defects.
I have had ongoing problems with backup camera, as does everybody else with this car. I was promised a fix in January and the camera is still not working correctly.
Started car and put in reverse. Back up camera stops working mid reversal.
Backup camera can fail to start when putting car in reverse. When backup camera does start, it can also suddenly stop during active reversal so that the driver is then reversing with zero visibility. All car audio can stop or suddenly fail to start in the car. This impacts sensors, blind spot warnings, etc. Driver is reliant and conditioned to hearing these sensors for lane keeping, safety, turn signal sounds, etc and without this - driver can dangerously assume there are no issues. Issues have been reproduced and confirmed by dealer, dealer has attempted to fix this and there have been multiple recalls by NHTSA as well - but nothing has fixed this issue yet. No warnings, no messages before any failures.
When backing up the car, the rear camera often does not work. It gives a message that says "camera not available." It happens sometimes, and when it doesn't happen, the camera will lag and freeze up. It makes it dangerous for cars and pedestrians behind me, as I lose access to the camera. The problem has not been taken to the dealer. There were prior recalls on the car due to this, and were claimed to have been fixed via OTA software update. However, I am on the latest software and this still occurs. It has not been inspected by anyone, and there are no warning lamps or anything.
Backup camera fails regularly even after software update to version 3.6.4. Video feed will stutter and lag, which gives the driver an unreliable view out the back of the car when reversing. Additionally, the screen will show a ‘Camera temporarily unavailable’ message when reversing, and no camera video feed is shown. The driver may be able to fix this by pressing the home button on the screen, and then tapping on the camera icon to bring up the video feed again, however this may not always work and is an extra step/distraction for the driver. This issue puts pedestrians, animals, vehicles, and other property at risk. Due to the design of the car, there is extremely limited visibility through the side and rear windows of the car. Without a reliably functioning backup camera, drivers may accidentally strike pedestrians or vehicles when reversing. When the issue was brought to the attention of my local Polestar/Volvo service center, I was told there was no solution they could offer and owners must wait for the issue to be solved with future OTA software updates to the vehicle. Polestar has issued several OTA updates, but the issue has not improved whatsoever. A quick search of Polestar forums and Reddit threads will confirm that this issue is widespread across the entire Polestar 2 fleet, with many owners reporting the issues described above. One more note: this camera issue has presented itself throughout the 3+ years I’ve owned the vehicle, however it has worsened over time. It is my opinion (and the opinion of many other Polestar owners) that the infotainment computer is seriously underpowered and in this car. Other apps and functions have presented errors and have become sluggish and unreliable (maps, Spotify, etc) and I believe it is because the system is running out of memory or other resources.
The back up camera fails to show intermittently even with the latest update
The backup camera frequently does not work.
