NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2016 Ram 1500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Electronic braking system, traction control system and cruise control are non-operational. This problem affects all vehicles travelling on the road with me. The problem has been confirmed and diagnosed by a dealer. Warning lights on the dashboard are constant, along with "service electronic braking system" on engine start-up. This fault started in November, 2023. The dealership is unable to procure a replacement ABS module. Why is this not a recall issue? This fault prevents the vehicle from passing inspection.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 25–35 MPH, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to the residence. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated after the failure. The contact called the local dealer and was informed that a diagnostic test was needed; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that failure was related to NHTSA Action Number: RQ23003(Steering). The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
Driving down road and truck engine sputtered and lost power eventually completely stalling out. If on a busy highway I could have been hit due to the loss of power at speed. I had it towed to a dealership and they have confirmed it is the High Pressure Fuel Pump that has failed and is under recall. There were no warnings of this failure prior to it happening.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the ABS and traction control warning lights illuminated. The contact depressed the brake pedal however, the brakes were not operating smoothly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed ABS module. The contact was informed that the ABS module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that the ABS module was ordered but would not be available until April 2024. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 59,624.

Power steering becomes stiff intermittently.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Vehicle ABS system, brake, and towing problem warning lights are on as well as loss of cruise control. I started noticing my cruise control not functioning properly about a month or two prior to total failure. The local RAM dealer in Live Oak, FL. verified problem and admitted this has been an ongoing issue. Replacement parts are not available with a tentative availability date in March. In my research I have found these estimates of part availability to be hopeful guesses. In the meantime I am not able to tow my travel trailer or utility trailer due to this unsafe condition. My vehicle has approximately 82,000 miles on it and for this to be happening to so many of these similar vehicles is unacceptable and Chrysler be held liable for this issue. I cannot safely take my family on vacation with our travel trailer without having use of the trailer braking system. I cannot sell the vehicle like this nor can I afford to buy another vehicle to replace this RAM 1500. Thank you.
The Anti-Lock Brake System Control Module as well as the Hydraulic Control Unit associated with the ABS Control Module. The left front Caliper locked up while driving. My safety and the safety of the passengers in my vehicle were at risk, as well as the other vehicles nearby. The vehicle has been inspected and diagnosed by an independent service center, Aaron's Auto Repair and Tire, 2623 Knight Avenue Waycross, Ga, 912-387-0503. The part is showing as being on national back order, so it was unable to be fixed. This is the only vehicle I have available to commute to work. There were no warning lamps prior to the incident, however, the warming lamp came on almost simultaneously.
I’ve been experiencing a loss of power steering in colder temperatures. Nearly impossible to drive.
ABS failure resulted in life-threatening failure of the trailer-brake-system, and associated traction and cruise control November 5th 2023 while towing 7,000 lbs on the Interstate. Local dealership was of no help whatsoever (see attached). This is a widely reported issue on various forums.
ABS Service light is on. Brake light also comes on periodically. Replacement part is unavailable. I have been to multiple service locations to have the issue resolved. At this point I'm told by the Dodge Dealer Service people that they cannot order the part until March 20....On top of that the part repair is over $3000. This: 1) is a common problem with Dodge RAMS and many others from what I've discovered in my research 2) Is a safety issue that is not being properly addressed and escalated. 3) Should not be a short supply part if it's a safety component 4) Needs immediate attention by Dodge
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) and 23V411000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the parts to do the recall repairs were not yet available. The local dealer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
ABS CONTROL MODULE FAILED. LOSE OF TRACTION CONTROL, CRUUSE CONTROL, AND ABS. DEALER CONFIRMED BY DIAGNOSTIC TEST. DEALER STATED THE CONTROL MODULE HAS BEEN PULLED FROM MARKET BY ENGINEER FOR DESIGN REVIEW. PART IS UNAVAILABLE.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 25 MPH, the contact heard an abnormal sound coming from then vehicle and then smelled fumes coming from the vehicle. The check engine warning light and check fuel cap warning light were illuminated. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and determined that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was 71,625.
2016 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7L 4x4 6 speed. Transmission failed at 149000 kms. Highly maintained police fleet vehicle. Never towed any weights. Transmission failed . Both 4th and 5th gear + O/D clutch are bad.
The ABS light and traction control light came on and the cruise control stopped working. Brakes are spongy and require increased peddle pressure to stop. According to dealership the problem is the ABS module. A new ABS module will not be available until May 24.
High pressure fuel pump went out. Dealer refuses to repair stating no parts available since 2022. I purchased vehicle used June 2023, did not know it had a active recall that said "do not sell". Pump went out 4 mo later while driving highway speeds, been parked at dealership for 4 months. No loaner, no attempt to repair, no apology, just say cant do a thing about the 2 year old recall. 1. seems bad faith to sell a flawed veh that has do not sell on recall. 2. no offer to trade it back, fix it or give loaner. 3. repair parts are all over internet including Mopar sales has over 2000 available, dealer said they have no parts.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated while operating the vehicle, the front driver's side seat belt malfunctioned and did not properly retract, and the locking mechanism would not click and properly lock to secure the driver. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 91,500.
Antilock brake system module failure. The system controls the anti-locking brake system as well as vehicle stability control, both federally mandated for this year vehicle. The ABS, stability control, and brake lights are illuminated on the dash. The message “service antilock brake system” is displayed on the message center as well as “service electronic braking system” The part is not available for inspection at this time as it is still on the vehicle and cannot be removed without causing complete failure of the braking system. The vehicle is still being driven as there is no other option at this time. Failure of the system puts anyone operating the vehicle in danger due to the ABS & Stability systems being inoperable. Failure confirmed by independent auto repair technician. ABS system reset and re-initialize without resolution of the issue. The part has not been inspected by the dealership who did not wish to inspect it as it was known issue. No accidents involved with my vehicle due to this as yet. The system failed in November 2023. I contacting the Ram dealer to replace the part and I was informed there were no modules available because it was on “Engineering Hold”. This was explained that the part had to be redesigned due to a continuous failure/problem. I was told it would be available in March 2024. Re-contacted the dealership in March 2024 and was advised it would not be until after June or July. The Part became available sometime after August 2024. However, due to the backlog of vehicles the dealership had to repair, none were available clear into 2025. As I understand, this is a widespread problem that has affected 10’s to 100’s of thousands of vehicles. Part numbers 68295368AA & 68295368AB with the redesigned part being 68295368AC. I also understand that this part has failed on the Durango, Charger, and Challenger vehicles as well.
This complaint is to acknowledge a problem with my 2016 Ram 1500; I understand that NHTSA is currently investigating the issue. I urge NHTSA to require a recall on this in order to expedite a solution. The following warning lights are present: service ABS system, traction control, check engine, brake (parking brake engaged), check fuel tank cap; the turn signals also blink fast and problem message is present. Inspection is available upon request. The main safety concern is whether or not the brakes are functioning properly. It seems as though the dealer is aware of this widespread issue and the parts needed to fix the issue are unavailable and have been unavailable for an extended time. October 2023 is the date when I had the truck evaluated, if I recall correctly.
Power steering failed without warning which rendered the vehicle immobile.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated while making a turn from a complete stop, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact pulled to the side of the road. The contact stated that he continued driving, and the vehicle regained power steering functionality while driving. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring intermittently while driving. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V167000 (Steering). The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 58,333.
I have replaced the heater control valve twice now and both times the seal leaks causing my transmission to over heat no heat and my engine to over heat. The first heater control valve lasted about 800 miles. The second one didn't even last a trip to work and I had to pull over
the abs module brake setstem has not been working properly for about 9 to 10 months. when I call to see if dealership they keep telling that their engineers are still working on the problem. the problem can go out anytime. i would like for the NHTSA to investagate the problem. I was told that this problem is a big safety problem.
ABS control module failure. Chrysler advised they are not producing replacement parts. Have been unavailable for over a year. Advised part may be available in 4 months but no assurance it will be. No aftermarket option not rebuilt parts. Dealer advised to just drive vehicle. Failure has disabled ABS, traction control, stability control, cruise control and electric trailer brakes making vehicle less safe to operate and incapable of towing. Failure occurred while towing travel trailer in rainy, mountainous conditions.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering assist. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic; however, no error codes were retrieved. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: RQ23003 (Steering). The failure mileage was approximately 73,000.
The electric power steering system went out while driving. The truck had been checked for codes that day which indicated a possible need to replace the egr valve but nothing about power steering. I was in a parking lot and was able to pull into a space but was unable to get home.
Electric power steering assist failure periodically. Steering hard to turn at times regardless of speed. Issues come and go without warning. No failure lamps or MIL light. Dodge dealer has NOT been informed as of yet. Failure started on October of 2023. During failure charging voltage drops as well.
Recall was announced in June 2022, there is still not remedy. I was driving my vehicle when all of a sudden it stalled out in the middle of an interstate. I was able to drift to the median to keep myself and others safe. I had it towed to my dealership and they said they can not fix it, it’s part of the recall. Now I’m here without a vehicle and Chrysler will not do anything about it.
Loss of power steering making it hard to steer at low speeds. Power steering on and off intermittently making steering to feel jerky.
BRAKE LIGHT STAYS ON ALL THE TIME & ESC STAYS ON ALL THE TIME. ANTILOCK BRAKE LIGHT STAYS ON ALL THE TIME. TOOK IT TO JACK POWELL DODGE IN ESCONDIDO CA AND THEY SAID MODULE & MANIFOLD WAS BAD BUT THAT IN WAS UNDER ENGINEERING REVIEW & IS UNAVAILABLE NOW. THEY WILL CALL WHEN THEY CAN GET IT BUT IN THE MEAN TIME THE TRUCK IS GOOD TO DRIVE.
Im loosing complete steering capabilty on my truck, it’s scary to drive it. I want to know if my truck its one of the one with the posible steering circuit board contamination. almost got into a wreck.
My electronic power steering stopped working without warning. It is only happening when it’s cooler outside. When the weather is warm it hasn’t been an issue. Now that it’s fall it’s happened again. The first time it happened I shut off the truck and restarted it and it was fine for about a month. But now today the problem hasn’t resolved by restarting it. The dash now indicates “service power steering”. The vehicle is not driveable without power steering.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System/Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the check engine light had appeared on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where a diagnostic showed the warning light was related to the high-pressure fuel pump under recall. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000. Vin tool confirms parts not yet available.
Power steering issue. Truck suddenly very hard to steer, especially at low speeds
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at slow speeds, the steering wheel became firm and difficult to maneuver. No warning lights was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. An undisclosed dealer was notified of the failure and an appointment was scheduled. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V167000 (Steering) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacture was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.

My hpfp failed causing metal to get into the fuel rail and affecting the injectors causing a hot spot on a piston causing piston slap and engine failure was told about recall z46 dealership they didn't fix stellantis will not fix will not support the need for a engine replacement
I believe my electronic power steering is malfunctioning. There are no indicator lights on the dash but the power steering is difficult to steer. It began intermittently but now is difficult to turn the wheel at all times. My 2016 ram now has approximately 102,000 miles on it. At this point I am unable to use the vehicle because of the loss of power steering.
FCA/Stellantis has failed as of 09/06/2023 to provided replacement parts for the high pressure pump under recall 22V-406 continuing to subject diesels under this recall to failure
Front fuel tank strap broke. This is a known issue for Dodge ram trucks. It is the same issue that happened on the 2009 through 2012 Dodge ram recalls. My truck is a 2016 Dodge ram. Has been mostly in Virginia and Ohio over the last 8 years. The strap broke through the chassis due to rust and corrosion. This is a known issue with a lot of Dodge Ram trucks and is something the NHTSA should look into and force the dealerships to issue a recall.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road and the vehicle was able to restart. However, the contact was unable to pull to the side of the road when the failure occurred on one occasion, and the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer. The contact stated that the dealer replaced the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) several times. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel); however, the failure persisted. The contact stated that there was fuel leaking from underneath the vehicle onto the ground. The vehicle was towed to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.
I bought this vehicle used and have had nothing but issues with the factory OEM Air Ride Suspension. Driving down any road, it will dump the air in the rear completely, sometimes it will dump the air on just the drivers side front and rear. I get dash warnings saying the air suspension is overheating and needs to cool. The local Dodge Dealer where I bought it knows about the problem and only advised me to replace it with aftermarket suspension. I bought an extended warranty and I personally believe they didn’t want to warranty the suspension. It will cost me $4-5k to replace with an air delete kit and could be $5-10k for OEM parts depending on what all gets replaced. Now my warranty is expired and it’s all on me. This is a safety problem and is a serious issue as there’s thousands of these vehicles with this suspension system having issues. Dodge is completely aware of it and it needs to be on them, not the consumer.
The ABS and traction control lights come on and off intermittently. When on the cruise control also doesn't work. No traction control or Automatic braking control. Seems to be a common problem with RAM 4x4 trucks.
The warning lights for the ABS/electrical braking system module has come on with no issue with the vehicle's braking system. This causes the cruise control and anti-skid devices not to work. Upon trying to order a new module through tbe dealership, I have received nothing except the excuse that the release date for this module keeps changing. This has been happening since September of 2023. My concern is that if at some point there is an issue with my braking system I will not know due to the malfunction of the module. I have contacted Chrysler to no avail. They say the part is no longer being manufactured and I will have to obtain one through aftermarket makers. I have researched and checked on my own and with help from mechanics and this part is not made/available through aftermarket makers. Chrysler will not release the parts already made stating they do not want to provide me with a possible defective product. My argument is the product they have supplied in my vehicle is defective and they will not make it good by supplying a quality replacement. Therefore, they are putting their customers safety/lives at risk.
As i was driving the gage cluster went blank and immediately the power steering went out on the vehicle. Very difficult to turn.
Same issue as NHTSA is investigating on RAM 2500 is occuring on RAM1500 frequently. ABS computer failure. Warning lights on for ABS, ESC and parking brake. My RAM dealer found defective ABS computer and told me its on back order. My issue popped up in August and apparantly back order is until at least/earliest March of 2024. This is based on multiple comments found on internet from others with same issue. If comments are true, backorder is not for procuring parts but for engineering to advise a solution. Clearly RAM is aware of the issue yet has not issued a recall or offered any solution. According to nhtsa own site there are multiple reports of this type failure on RAM 1500s. Also here is another link to a site where people list there complaints with many related to same symptoms: [XXX] While this has not caused an accident or issue, No one can answer how safe is it driving a vehicle with these lights on and confirmed computer issue -by dealer. Should everyone with this issue just not drive vehicle for months on end? Apparantly that is what RAM is hoping for or crossing fingers and hoping crashes/liabilities are minimal? Please step in and drive RAM to issue a recall and push them to expediate a fix. Thanks. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The ABS module failed on my truck and was replaced using an OEM part. The newly installed module worked for a few months, but failed. Upon failure the speed control failed, the ABS light came on and the truck was stuck in the middle of the street where I tried to restart the vehicle. The truck wouldn't shift into drive or neutral to be moved. The truck was unable to be moved and it took multiple restarts to get it able to be driven again. I have tried to get a new part for repair from Dodge (Ram) and they informed me the part is not being sold due to an engineering review being completed by the company that was going through March of 2024. The truck is far too dangerous and unpredictable to drive in this state and there is no way to repair the issue. What recourse is there to have an operational vehicle for use? This alone tells me Dodge knows there is a problem and they are unwilling to do anything about it in the immediate future. This repair is $1,000 to $2,000 every time it is completed.
The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) and 23V411000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the parts to do the recall repairs were unavailable. The contact stated while driving approximately 10 MPH and entering a parking lot, the vehicle stalled. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was diagnosed, and it was determined that the high-pressure fuel pump had failed. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 184,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
