NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2018 Ram 3500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The truck's ABS system becomes disabled after the ABS light intermittently comes on. Ram dealer diagnosis is a faulty abs pump and module. The parts are not available to fix the vehicle. ETA is June 30, 2024.
As I'm sure you are aware of the ABS issues these vehicles have had over the last few years without any sort of correction it has been a nightmare. The ABS light and service electronic braking system has been beeping for over a year and the dealers and parts people have no resolve for this. We have recently been able to do what was RECOMMENDED by the dealers and found a used module to replace ours that is not working, but for a $1,650.55 repair getting a used part does not make me feel good about it, considering there's nothing to say this unit will not do the same thing in a few months. Again, we have been dealing with this for over a year and was told some point last year things were under review and waited 6 months for that review to be cleared and approved to only be told the review process was extended to try and find some resolve and still do not have any news from the Dealers or Manufacturers about this. To be such a huge safety component of the vehicle you would expect some sense of urgency on this matter, but that has not been the case for us or many others in this same situation.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 3500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V896000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted, and it was confirmed that the part was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. While driving over a bump in the road, the ABS warning light illuminated, the cruise control unintendedly deactivated, and the trailer brake became inoperable. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 25,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Traction control and abs lights have been coming on randomly while driving over the past several years. Seems worse and more frequent in cold temperatures. Scanner reads code C0020. Cruise control suddenly shuts off when this happens causing a safety hazard especially to those traveling behind. Dash lights and constant chimes are very distracting while driving. No abs makes winter driving more dangerous as well. Seems to be a common problem with this vehicle. There should be a recall issued to fix this.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 3500. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the ABS and EBS warning lights remained illuminated. The contact stated that while the failure occurred, the cruise control feature was inoperable. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 151,000.
ABS LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND OFF. Recently both lights stay on all the time and on the truck display it reads service electronic brake system.
The HCU failed twice under warranty illuminating the ABS and TRAC lights disabling ABS functions (obviously fixed by a dealership). This is a safety hazard trying to stop a RAM 3500 without ABS, this in poor weather is beyond UNSAFE. Now, it has failed again not under warranty, same issue, same part. That is four units that have failed in my truck with only 27,000 miles in five years. The brushes in the electric motor start to fail so the ABS/TRAC light will flicker when hitting bumps, or in cold weather. The finally, they stay illuminated disabling crucial brake components and safety systems. I can have my vehicle looked at if necessary, I plan on replacing the HCU myself when the part arrives in a week (I work for a dealership).
For over 3 months the ABS Brake warning, the anti skid control and the cruise has not worked in my truck. I have had it to two different dealers, and opened a case with Ram. Case#89336043. They told me part is not available and has not been for the past year. Just drive my truck like it is??? I dont really know what options i have at this point. Please help!
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 3500. The contact stated that the ABS and traction control warning lights were intermittently illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed, and it was determined that the ABS and air bag control unit had failed. The air bag control unit was replaced, and the brake fluid was refilled. The contact then became aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V896000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) and wanted to know if the VIN was included in the recall. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and confirmed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer had opened a case for reimbursement which had since been closed. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 110,000.
While driving, my "service electronic brake system" and "service antilock brake system" would come on and go off repeatedly. Other times, nothing would happen. Then it would come back on and stay on. Next time, nothing would come on. Shop states that it was antilock brake pump. He said that these are known to be bad but the part is backordered with no timeline available.
The message “service electronic braking system” and service antilock brake system” periodically displays on the driver information screen. If I’m using cruise control when the message comes on the cruise control abruptly disengages causing a lurching slowdown. Often times it chimes and the message displays and disappears and comes back on and off numerous times.
Service ABS brake system and Service Electronc braking system warnings constantly come on and affects braking system and cruise control. Dealers have no answers, Dodge has no answers. As a commercial vehicle driver if my abs doesn’t work properly then I’m shut down, but dodge can get away with this in a regular vehicle. This is a very very common problem with 2018 dodge 3500’s and any help to get this fixed would be greatly appreciated, because they have no fix to the problem.
ABS/Traction control lights and failures of the HCU and/or ABS control module. Warning lights constantly going off at about 25k miles, fixed under warranty. I think they replaced the HCU and control module in about 2020-21, but not sure. The lights continually flash again (starting at about 50K miles) and I'm assuming another HCU failure, but it's out of warranty and was told by dealer a year ago that it would be a expensive fix at my expense, and that they would have the truck for a while and may not be able to get parts. I was told that after getting it fixed, they could see if it would be eligible for any coverage, but their work was only guaranteed for 10k miles. I've researched it and discovered the original part was replaced by another part number, although the new part seems to fail as often, and it's usually the HCU and/or electric motor on HCU. I tried reporting this before, but got no confirmation or follow up from manufacturer of NHTSA, so I'm not sure it went thru. Truck currently has about 63k miles.
Abs and traction control continues to fail. I bought all new sensors. Then replaced abs module and pump and lights went away, after a year they all came back on and it's a repeat process.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 3500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake, cruise control, and ABS warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the cruise control and ABS failed to function as intended. The contact stated that when the brake pedal was depressed, the vehicle failed to stop as intended. In addition, the contact stated that a beeping sound was persistent. The contact was annoyed by the persistent beeping while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times; however, the cause of the failure was not determined. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. In addition, the contact was informed that parts were not available to repair the vehicle. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V896000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the part for the recall repair was not available. The contact stated that the vehicle could not be traded because of the unrepaired recall. In addition, the contact stated that the failure started two years ago, and the recall was initiated a year later. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. In addition, the contact stated that the manufacturer was contacted several times and informed the contact that the parts were not yet available. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
ABS system failure. Also disabling 4x4 wd during winter driving over a snowy pass; no abs, no traction control, no 4wd, no warning. I spun out several times and nearly crashed on my way home. Come to find out thousands of truck owners of this model are experiencing the same problem. This is a threat to public safety. Please address immediately
Service Electronic Braking Service and Service ABS/TRACTION CONTROL. This is intermittent. When it happens Cruise control, 4 wheel drive and abs doesn't work. Happens when I'm towing my camper or not. Trailer brakes won't work when this happens. Hundreds, maybe thousands of complaints about this on Ram forums. This problem occurs no matter what the speed is. It even happens while sitting still.
ABS light and Traction control light turn on and off constantly
The alarm light and bell goes off. The 'Service Antilock Brake System' and 'Service Electronic Braking System' lights flash. This occurs intermittently while pulling a 5th wheel camper. The brakes work @ 30-40% strength. This is a safety issue. We thought it was an issue with the campers breaks, however, after connecting it to another trailer, the same thing happened. We had to take it to the dealership with a trailer to get it to repeat issue so that they could determine what the issue was. The Dealership ran a Diagnosis on the truck and the DTC, Diagnosis Trouble Code was C0020-01 ABS Pump General Failure. The dealership recommended replacing the HCU, Hydraulic Control Unit. They did not have the part and said it was on backorder. The unit costs $830.49. This doesn't include labor.
ABS and Traction Control lights turn on and off while driving
My ABS/Traction Control light has been coming on for over 2 months. There seems to be no pattern to when it happens. Someone pulled out in front of me yesterday and I barely missed them. I understand the problem part is in short supply. I tow a heavy fifth wheel camper. I need to get this fixed!
The Hydraulic Control Unit Chrysler part number 68143491AA failed and was replaced on my vehicle. I had the vehicle back to the dealer numerous times before they replaced this item. 14000 miles later the same problems are happening again. This causes the Anti-lock braking system and Traction control system to no longer function limiting function under wet or slippery conditions. This puts the driver and others at risk. The vehicle/component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. The warning lamps and messages will flicker on and off repeatedly and randomly while driving.
Anti-lock brake system warning comes on the dash and the warning chime sounds. The warning dash lights come on and goes off 10-25 times in 1/2 hour of driving. There are no error codes stored in the computer system.
Anti-Lock Braking system and Electronic Braking system, service system warning come on and off randomly all the time. Seems to happen when bumpy roads are encountered.
My ABS light and Vehicle Stability Assist/Traction Control light came on. I now do not have the ability to use my cruise control. I believe the vehicle is unsafe.
Continued intermittent ABS light and "service ABS System" message with annoying / distracting chime, Loss of ABS and traction control, I have had several instances when the braking of the truck has been affected and could have easily caused an accident. Between the braking issues and the constant distraction of the vehicle chiming and alerting of a system issue, this needs to be looked into. the number of complaints does not show the actual number of people that are having the same issues. I have talked with several other owners that have had the same issue and the dealership repaired them but not reporting anything.
Abs light traction control light come on and off while driving. Warning pops up which service electronic brake system
ABS and traction control lights constantly flash electric brake assist also flashes intermittently.
The Hydraulic Control Unit has failed intermittantly. Complained to the dealer while it was under warranty and received 'cannot duplicate.' Dealer wants $1,000 to fix. This is a well-documented failing component.
The ABS system is failing. The braking system is now uncertain for driving.
ABS/HCU second time malfunctioning. Causing no abs and no cruise control. Parts are on back order until feb 2023. Causing me not to be able to safely operate my vehicle
Abs light/ warning goes off and on continuously. Brought truck in to repair and was told that they aren’t making the parts to repair this known issue on many vehicles. Was told parts available In February which has now been changed to April. This is not acceptable. Along with being very annoying with warning light flashing off and on. It’s also unsafe. As the ABS and traction control are affected by this.
Service Electronic Brake System Warning. This warning started coming on sporadically. When the warning appears in my dash, I will lose abs function, traction control, and cruise control. This appears to be a common problem with this year Ram truck. The fix is an abs module, and or, a hcu module.
ABS, Cruise Control and Traction control warning lights constantly flash on dash informing me that they are disabled. Dealer is saying that Ram canceled their part order for the ABS module part number 68347098AC needed to do the repair with an estimated 1 year date before it is available. Truck is unsafe to drive due to ABS and traction control being inoperable and was warned I may be liable if I choose to drive it and an accident were to happen.
Abs warning light indicator is on. Dealership says abs module and pump have to be replaced, but parts are not available. I've been waiting since Nov of 2023.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 3500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V896000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The local dealer was contacted, and it was confirmed that the part was not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated that the ABS warning light remained illuminated while operating the vehicle, with an audible alarm activated inside the cabin of the vehicle. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The contact owns a 2018 Ram 3500. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle unintendedly steered to the right. There was no warning light illuminated. The contacted turned the steering wheel between the 10 and 11 0’clock positions to keep the vehicle aligned. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was then towed to a local mechanic however, the vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V021000 (Steering). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 102,000.
Service anti-lock brake and traction control system warning lights intermittently flash. This also causes a dinging sound. Problem is persistent. Ram dealer says abs brake module and hydraulic units need to be replaced. Parts backordered until March which means I will have to drive an unsafe vehicle with the constant distraction of flashing lights and warning tones or park my vehicle for 4 months.
ABS and Traction control lights/audible warnings came on at about 25K miles on my 2018 Ram 3500 Dually truck. ABS control module and I think HCU were replaced under warranty. At about 50K the problem came back, ABS and Traction lights constantly coming on. Dealer said the issue is out of warranty now. Dealer said I'd have to pay a diagnostic fee, parts/labor, and computer re-program in the thousands. Dealer said because this is a common issue, and my truck was repaired once under warranty, that after the repairs they could file to see if the manufacturer would cover any of it. Even if I buy and replace the parts that have been back ordered, I'd have to pay thousands for the parts and to have the dealer program the parts to the truck. I have not repaired this yet, because I believe the parts are faulty and will need to be replaced every 25k miles. I've read about many people having these same issues with the brakes on these Ram trucks.
ABS and traction lights come on intermittently with the brakes feeling different.Diagnostic shows code C0020-01 which is apparently a very common issue with 2018 Rams.Dealer told me today(10-25-23) no part’s available at the earliest will be Feb. of 2024.This truck has 81000 miles on it and is my daily driver.I would hope Ram steps up and fixes problems at NO CHARGE for everyone effected.
UNKNOWN. abs pump problem
Service abs system and traction control lights come on and go off at random times. When the lights come on it disables cruise control. While driving it has come on and disabled the cruise on several occasions and is a hazard while driving. I have told I will need to replace the hydraulic control unit but is on back order with no eta on parts
Abs lights jump on beep then go off over and over. Had light checked and was told no fault showing. Month later did it for days then stopped.
ABS sensor lights and sounds activate. Intermittant and irritating. Dealer says it is a well known defect and parts are not available.
Dashboard ABS and Traction Control Lights come on intermittently with message to service breaking system. The lights are accompanied by loud audio alarms. The audio alarms usually cycle through a minimum of three times; sometime five. The dashboard ABS and Traction lights reset by themselves. Scanner codes identify an electrical problem with the ABS HCU and/or hydraulic pump. Dealership maintenance and service departments advise new parts are not available but to check back frequently for supply updates. If/when repair parts become available, this repair will be the second time I have endured this problem. Also, I have been able to reset the above dashboard alerts and audio alarms without the aid of Bidirectional scanner by cycling my windows down and up. So, I’m not sure if I have an ABS/TC problem or a wiring problem.
The ABS and traction control lights come on intermittinly.code c0020-01 for pump motor control was the diagnosis. This truck has a total of 8211 miles.
Antilock Brake light C0020-01 DTC
ABS activator system and stability control out. Dodge has replacement parts but are not replacing or releasing at this time
Service electronic brake system, & service hydraulic brake system warning lights intermittently display on dash. Disables both of those safety features as well as cruise control. These are very important safety features especially when hauling a load!
From what I understand these Ram Pickups have numerous problems with the ABS module and HCU unit going out and our truck has had the same problem we had to replace the HCU unit at only 10876 miles on November 4. 2020 and now we have had the ABS warning lights coming on and took to dealer on 10/11/23 with only 22287 miles and they say we need a ABS module, we are told this part 68347098AB is on back order and as of January we still have not received it and now dealer is telling us they came out with new part number. For ram not to be able to provide parts to fix their defective braking system parts is a safety issue and Ram should make this an urgent recall issue and pay for the replacement. You cannot find the part anywhere and Ram Truck owners are having to drive with dinging warning lights and unsafe braking issues.
