NOW I HAVE ANOTHER TRANSMISSION LEAK THAT I HAVE TO GET FIXED AGAIN. WHICH I FIND IRONIC DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS SEALED. ALSO MY FAMILY AND I ARE MOVING CROSS COUNTY THE END OF AUGUST 2014. NOW SPEAKING TO MY CAR DEALER SHOP THEY WERE HONEST WITH ME AND SAID THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH WOULD PROBABLY BE FIXED BUT NOT MY POWER STEERING MOTOR. NOW WITH THAT BEING SAID IN THE PAST EIGHT MONTHS MY CAR HAS STALLED THREE TIMES STOPPING, OR COMING OFF AN OFF RAMP FROM AN INTERSTATE. IT HAS EVEN NOT WANTED TO START IN MY DRIVEWAY AND ITS NOT BECAUSE OF THE BATTERY OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. I JUST HAD TO CHANGE MY BATTERY IN JANUARY 2014 BECAUSE THE CAR WAS DEAD SOMEHOW IT HAD POWER BUT IT WOULDN'T START. ALSO MY CAR HAS BEEN TRYING TO KEEP MY KEY FOR A COUPLE YEARS AND I HAVE TO FIGHT WITH IT TO GET IT BACK. NOW AS OF THE LAST FIVE MONTHS I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TAKE MY KEY OUT WITH THE CAR RUNNING. WHICH SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING. *TR
ON OCT. 2009 TO PRESENT MY SATURN ION (2005) POWER STEERING FAILURE. THIS HAPPENS EVERYTIME WHEN I DRIVE THE CAR. IN ORDER FOR THE PROBLEM TO GO AWAY, I HAVE TO PULL OVER AND TURN OFF ENGINE AND POWER STEERING IS OK FOR FEW MILES, THEN POWER STEERING FAILURE AGAIN AND AGAIN. THE STEERING WHEEL GETS REALLY HARD AND IT'S HARD TO STEER. ALSO I NOTICED MY MILEAGE FROM 60,000 NOW READS 711,300. I CALLED THE DEALER AND EXPLAIN THE SITUATION AND THEY ARE GOING TO CHARGE ME OVER $1200.00. I STILL DRIVE THE SATURN OCCASIONALLY ON SHORT DISTANCE ONLY. PLEASE HELP. *TR
ON JUNE 15, 2009 PURCHASED USED SATURN ION 2 WITH 45625 MILES FOR MY 17 YEAR OLD. CAME WITH 3 MONTH WARRANTY/3000 MILES. IN SEPT. CAR STARTED STALLING, TOOK TO DEALER WHERE PURCHASED ON SEPT. 17 AND THEY SAID DIRTY FUEL INJECTOR, CHARGED $245.69. DROVE CAR ON TURNPIKE 100 MILES AT 65MPH AND CAR STALLED 2 TIMES!!!! ON WAY BACK, AGAIN ON TURNPIKE DOING SPEED LIMIT 65MPH CAR STALLED 1 TIME. YOU GET CHIMES AND THE PWR STR LIGHT COMES ON. CAR STALLS AN AVERAGE OF 4 TIMES A DAY! CAR RIGHT NOW AT DEALER FOR THEM TO TRY AND FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG. IT IS NOT RIGHT, I PAID 9369.67 + TAX FOR CAR AND 1635. FOR GMPP WARRANTY THAT THEY TELL ME IS NOT COVERED! I DO NOT HAVE THIS KIND OF MONEY. THIS IS SUCH A SAFETY ISSUE, I CANNOT BELIEVE THE NHTSA HAS NOT FORCED SATURN OR GM TO RECALL THIS CAR. LOOK AT THE INTERNET OR YOUR OWN SITE FOR THE COMPLAINTS YOU HAVE ABOUT THIS ISSUE. IT IS A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THERE IS A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT AS A RESULT OF CAR SHUTTING DOWN AND LOSING STEERING!!! *TR
A PIECE OF THE WHEEL (RIM) HAS BROKEN OUT. MAY CAUSE EVENTUAL AIR LOSS. *TR
NOTHING LED UP TO THE FAILURE. CAR WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION. POWER STEERING JUST WENT OUT AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. WILL STAY ON FOR A FEW MINUTES THEN SHUT OFF AGAIN WHENEVER CAR IS IN MOTION. MAKES IT VERY HARD TO TURN AND MANEUVER THE CAR ESPECIALLY AROUND OTHER CARS AND PEOPLE. I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SWERVE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE NOT GOT THIS REPAIRED YET BECAUSE THE SATURN DEALERSHIP QUOTED ME ALMOST $1000 TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN. I ASKED IF THEY HAVE DONE THIS BEFORE AND THEY SAID THEY HAVE FOUND THE PROBLEM BEFORE IN SEVERAL ION MODELS. AFTER RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET I FOUND NUMEROUS CONSUMER COMPLAINTS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM!! *TR
I CURRENTLY OWN A 2005 SATURN ION-2. I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR SINCE IT HAD 12 MILES ON IT. IN 2007 MY CAR DID NOT START ONE MORNING AND SINCE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY THE LOCAL SATURN DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE STARTER. STARTING LAST YEAR THIS PROBLEM RETURNED. WHEN I TURN THE STARTER ALL THE LIGHTS COME ON BUT THE STARTER WON'T EVEN TRY TO START. THIS HAPPENS MOSTLY WHEN IT'S COLD, BUT NOT NECESSARILY. IT HAPPENS AT ALL DIFFERENT TIMES OF THE DAY, AND IS VERY RANDOM. I MISSED WORK ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION AND EVEN MISSED A JOB INTERVIEW BECAUSE OF IT. EVERYTHING I HAVE READ ONLINE SAYS YOU HAVE NOT DONE A RECALL BECAUSE IT IS NOT A 'SAFETY ISSUE' BUT LAST WEEKEND AT 1AM, WHEN IS WAS 10 DEGREES OUTSIDE, I WAS STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE BECAUSE MY CAR WOULDN'T START. NOT ONLY IS IT UNSAFE FOR A SINGLE FEMALE BUT THAT TEMPERATURE IS BELOW FREEZING AND IT IS COMPLETELY UNSAFE, BECAUSE I COULD FREEZE TO DEATH WHILE WAITING IN MY CAR FOR IT TO START. I PURCHASED A NEW IGNITION SWITCH AND INSTALLED IT IN THE WAY THE DEALERSHIP INSTRUCTED ME TO, BUT THE CAR WOULDN'T START AT ALL AFTER I DID THAT AND I HAD TO RE-INSTALL THE OLD ONE. THIS WAS $30 I CAN'T GET BACK AND MY CAR STILL WON'T START. *TR
I HAVE HAD SEVERAL ISSUES WITH THE IGNITION AND NOT BEING ABLE TO IMMEDIATELY TURN THE CAR OFF. THE IGNITION WILL NOT RELEASE THE KEY AND WILL BE STUCK IN THE ACC POSITION MOST TIMES. THE MOST RECENT TIME I COULD NOT GET THE CAR TO TURN OFF AT ALL. THE IGNITION WOULD NOT RELEASE OR ALLOW THE KEY TO TURN EVEN MINIMALLY. HAD TO UNHOOK THE BATTERY, PULL THE FUEL PUMP FUSE IN ORDER TO GET THE CAR TO STOP RUNNING. THE IGNITION STILL WOULD NOT RELEASE THE KEY. I GOT THIS INFORMATION ON HOW TO DO THIS FROM MANY COMPLAINTS THAT I READ ABOUT ON THE INTERNET ON SATURN IONS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. THEY DO NOT ADDRESS THIS IN THE MANUAL, AND WHEN I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP 18 MONTHS AGO TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE THEN, THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG AND THEY REPLACED THE IGNITION WHICH DID NOT SEEM TO HELP WITH THE PROBLEM I WAS HAVING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 SATURN ION. THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHUT OFF. TWO YEARS AGO THE IGNITION WOULD NOT SHUT OFF AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC WHO REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH AND REPROGRAMED THE COMPUTER. THE CONTACT HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. THE FAILURE RECCURRED BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED, STATED THERE WERE NO RECALLS AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 SATURN ION. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE POWER STEERING FAILED AND THE VEHICLE BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER. THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION WHEN RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE FAILURE RECURRED NINE MONTHS LATER. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED OR DIAGNOSED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 48,217. 2005 SATURN ION ELECTRIC POWER STEERING QUITS WITHOUT WARNING. OCCURS AT LEAST ONCE EVERY 40 MILE TRIP. COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT IF CORNERING WHEN POWER STEERING FAILS. TURNING THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTING FIXES THE PROBLEM TEMPORARILY. *TR
FAILED IGNITION SWITCH ON A 2005 SATURN ION. THE IGNITION KEY IS STUCK IN THE SHAFT AND WILL NOT DISENGAGE. THE ONLY WAY TO TURN OFF THE CAR IS TO REMOVE THE STEERING COLUMN COVER AND UNPLUG THE DISCONNECT UNDER THE STEERING COLUMN. *TR
WAS DRIVING TO PICK UP MY SON FROM WORK. HEARD A LITTLE BEEP-BEEP GO OFF, AND WHEN I LOOKED AT THE DASH-BOARD IT SAID "PWR STR" I HAD LOST THE POWER STEERING IN MY 2005 SATURN ION. I HAD TO GET THE CAR TO DRIFT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, THEN I TURNED IT OFF FOR A MINUTE BECAUSE I GOT REALLY NERVOUS AS TO WHAT WOULD HAPPEN NEXT. I TURNED THE CAR BACK ON AND THE LIGHT HAD GONE OUT AND THE STEERING SEEMED TO BE BACK TO NORMAL. I CALLED THE SATURN DEALERSHIP THE FOLLOWING MONDAY (AUG. 31) TO BRING IN THE CAR TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. MIND YOU I HAVE 31,000 MILES ON MY CAR AND MY CAR IS WELL TAKEN CARE OF AND IS ALWAYS MAINTAINED. SATURN TOLD ME AFTER A "DIAGNOSTIC TEST" IT WAS THE POWER STEERING MODULE MOTOR AND IT HAD TO BE REPLACED FOR $1200.00 DOLLARS!! THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL CAR IS ALL OVER THE INTERNET!! GM REFUSES TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DEFECT AND HAS THE NERVE TO CHARGE CUSTOMERS FOR WHAT IS THEIR FAULT TO BEGIN WITH. NEEDLESS TO SAY I AM GETTING RID OF MY CAR AND I WILL NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER SATURN OR GM CAR AGAIN!! *TR
I OWN A 2005 SATURN ION AND THE POWER STEERING WAS GOING. I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID THE STEERING MOTOR HAD TO BE REPLACED, NOW THEY REPLACED IT FOR FREE, BUT MADE ME WAIT A WEEK AND SENT ME BACK OUT ON THE ROAD WITH A CAR THAT HAD POWER STEERING THAT WORKED SOMETIMES AND NOT OTHER TIMES. THEN TWO WEEKS LATER THE ENTIRE CAR STARTED TO FAIL. THE SPEEDOMETER, THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SWITCH GEARS, THE POWER STEERING WENT AGAIN, AND THE BREAKS WHERE PRETTY MUCH GONE. SO AFTER CAUSING A BIG SCENE THE CAR WAS LOOKED AT AND FOUND THAT THE TRANSMISSION MODULE WENT ON THE CAR. SO THEY REPLACED THE PART AFTER MAKING ME WAIT TWO DAYS TO GET MY CAR BACK. MY CONCERN IS WHY IS A CAR THAT WILL BE TURNING 5 YEARS OLD NEXT MONTH AND ONLY HAS ABOUT 27,900 MILES ON IT IS HAVING ALL THESE BIG PROBLEMS. IN THE MATTER OF ONE MOUTH I HAVE HAS A NEW BRAIN PUT INTO THE CAR. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS AWFUL AND RUDE. THEY ALL TRY TO BLAME EACH OTHER. WHEN I WENT TO PICK THE CAR UP THE SERVICE PEOPLE WOULD NOT EVEN TALK TO ME THEY TOLD ME TO SEE THE CASHIER SHE HAS MY KEYS. I SAID I AM NOT LEAVING HERE UNTIL I TEST DRIVE IT, SHE SAID OK, IT'S PARK IN THE LOT ON THE SIDE SOMEWHERE. I WAS LIKE NICE, YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE MY CAR IS ON YOUR LOT. SO IN THE MATTER OF ONE MONTH I HAVE THE STEERING COLUMN AND THE TRANSMISSION MODULE REPLACED. *TR
STEERING: SUDDEN LOSS OF ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM.
I OWN A 2005 SATURN ION WITH ABOUT 46,000 MILES ON IT. I LOVE MY LITTLE CAR AND HAD HOPES OF OWNING IT FOR YEARS TO COME. HOWEVER, MY HOPES OF BEING A HAPPY SATURN OWNER IS QUICKLY FADING AS I CONTINUALLY HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MY STEERING COLUMN. FIRST IT WAS THE IGNITION, WHICH I HAVE REPLACED TWICE, AND NOW THE POWER STEERING IS TURNING OFF WHILE I'M DRIVING. OBVIOUSLY THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND IT ALSO NOT UNCOMMON AS I'VE FOUND OUT BY SEARCHING THE INTERNET ON THIS VERY PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 SATURN ION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH WHEN CHANGING LANES ,THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE POWER STEERING LOCKED UP. HE PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND THEN ON. THE VEHICLE THEN DROVE NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE HE PURCHASED IT, AND THEY STATED THAT IT WAS THE STEERING MECHANISM THAT OVER HEATS AND SHUTS OFF. THERE WERE NO REPAIRS DONE TO THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THIS OCCURS EVERY TIME HE DRIVES THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 36000. I PURCHASED MY 2005 SATURN ION IN MAY OF 2009. SHORTLY AFTER I BEGAN EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH MY POWER STEERING FAILING. RECENTLY GM HAS RECALLED MANY CHEVY AND PONTIAC MODELS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. MY 2005 SATURN ION REDLINE USES THE SAME POWER STEERING UNIT AS THE OTHER MODELS RECALLED, BUT HAS NOT BEEN COVERED IN THE RECALL. *TR

I BOUGHT A 2005 SATURN ION IN MARCH 2008. SINCE THEN, I HAVE HAD THE KEY GET STUCK ON A CONSTANT BASIS. I HAD THAT FIXED, BUT THE KEY STILL STICKS, BUT I PUSH IT IN TO RELEASE IT. AT LEAST IT'S BETTER THAN IT WAS. THE CAR DOES NOT LIKE TO START IN COLD WEATHER. I REPLACED THE BATTERY. COST $421.00. NOW, AT ONLY 45,888 MILES, MY STEERING DISPLAY LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON AND I LOSE POWER STEERING. GOT IS CHECKED TOLD COST $700 TOTAL, BUT THE ONLY PROBLEM IS: NO PART IS AVAILABLE. IT IS ON BACK LOG. SO, I CAN'T AFFORD THE PART AND LABOR ANYWAY, BUT NO PART AVAILABLE? WHAT DO I DO NOW WITH A CAR I AM STILL PAYING ON? I FEEL I A M STUCK WITH A LEMON. *TR
I HAVE A 2005 SATURN ION WITH ONLY 20,000 MILES ON IT. RECENTLY MY POWER STEERING HAS BEEN FAILING REPEATEDLY. IT GOES OUT WITH LITTLE WARNING AT ANY TIME. I HAVE SEEN OTHER GM MODELS RECALLED FOR THIS SAME ISSUE BUT NOT SATURN. I HAVE READ ONLINE ABOUT 100S OF PEOPLE WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM! THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, WHY ISN'T IT BEING RECALLED? I ONLY HAVE A POWER TRAIN WARRANTY LEFT ON THIS VEHICLE AND I HAVE HEARD THIS WOULD COST UP TO $1500 WHICH IS COMPLETELY UNFAIR! I AM STILL MAKING PAYMENTS AND IT HAS HARDLY ANY MILES ON IT! THE DEALER SAID THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL TO HAVE THE ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING CONTROL BOX REPLACED BUT THEY AGREE IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD. IT COST ME $2200.00 TO HAVE IT REPLACED. VERY SCARY WHEN MAKING A TURN AND THE POWER STEERING GOES TO MANUAL. STOPPING AND STARTING THE VEHICLE RESETS IT ONLY TO HAVE IT GO OUT AGAIN IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. *TR
I HAVE A 2005 SATURN ION I BOUGHT NEW IT HAS APPROX. 21,000 MILES ON IT AND THE POWER STEERING KEEPS GOING OUT. WHEN I SHUT THE CAR OFF IT RESETS, BUT AFTER A FEW YARDS IT GOES OUT AGAIN. I PLACED A CALL TO GM AFTER CALLING SATURN NORTH THEY SAID I WOULD HAVE TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTICS DONE AT THE SATURN DEALERSHIP IN WHICH I HAVE DONE, THE FIX IS I HAVE TO HAVE THE STEERING COLUMN REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. NEITHER GM NOR SATURN ARE WILLING TO WORK WITH ME. GM HAS SAID IT IS NOT A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS AND THE FIX IS THE SAME, REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN, FUNNY THAT WOULDN'T BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS KNOWN PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE IS HARMED OR KILLED. GM AND SATURN ARE PUTTING THEIR CUSTOMERS AND EVERYONE ELSE ON THE STREET IN DANGER, BECAUSE THEY ARE IGNORING THE PROBLEM. ALSO, MY POWER WINDOW ON THE DRIVERS SIDE NO LONGER WORKS - IT FALLS DOWN WHEN I TRY TO PUT THE WINDOW DOWN, BUT IT WAS STAYING UP UNTIL GM TOLD MY I HAD TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT BY SATRUN NORTH DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID THE REGULATOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, BUT OF COURSE THEY DID NOT TELL ME THAT IF THEY TOOK THE DOOR PANEL OFF THE WINDOW WOULD NO LONGER STAY UP AND FOR SOME REASON NOW THE MOTOR FOR IT NO LONGER WORKS. COST ME $79.00 FOR THE DIAGNOSTICS AND I LEFT THERE WITH MY CAR WORSE THAN IT WAS. AT 21,000 MILES I DON'T THINK MY CAR SHOULD BE FALLING APART. *TR
DRIVING 2005 SATURN ION, APROX 43,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE...ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING MOTOR GETS"HOT" AND SHUTS DOWN. NO POWER STEERING IN VEHICLE. TURN VEHICLE OFF AND THE ELECTRONIC MECHANISM RESETS ITSELF AND WORKS UNTIL THE NEXT TIME IT SHUTS DOWN WHILE DRIVING. TOOK VEHICLE TO SATURN DEALERSHIP, POWER STEERING MOTOR IS BURNED OUT AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. ROUGHLY 1300.00. OR I CAN JUST DRIVE IT AS IS. TECH VOICED CONCERN THAT THE ELECTRONIC PROBLEMS IN THERE COULD BE VERY PROBLEMATIC BECAUSE THEY COULD GET HOT AND START A FIRE. UPON RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM N THESE MODELS, THERE SEEMS TO BE AN OVERABUNDANCE OF REPORTS OF THE SAME ISSUES. I BOUGHT A 2005 SATURN ION LAST AUGUST 2008. ON NOVEMBER 2008, I EXPERIENCED A DIFFICULTY ON STARTING THE CAR. SO I BROUGHT IT TO SATURN DUBLIN FOR A CHECK UP AND REPAIR, AND THEY DID ALL THE TEST FOR THE CAR AND INFORMED THAT THEY HAVE TO REPLACE THE IGNITION OF THE CAR AS THIS IS THE FINDINGS OF THEIR MECHANIC.. I AGREED AS I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE AUTHORIZED DEALER MECHANIC, I PAID FOR $700+, FOR REPAIR, LABOR AND PARTS.. BUT RECENTLY LAST WEEK, MAY 2009, MY CAR WOULD NOT START AGAIN..I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND HAD IT CHECKED.. THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR, IT STARTED WHEN THEY CHECKED AND THEY ASKED ME TO PAY $130 FOR THE CHECK UP..WHICH I PAID. A FEW DAYS AFTER I WAS AT WORK, WHICH IS IN UNION CITY, 22 MILES AWAY FROM MY HOUSE AND WHEN I WAS ABOUT TO GO HOME,MY CAR WOULD NOT START GAIN.. SAME PROBLEM AS BEFORE... I OWN A 2005 SATURN ION. THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT WHEN DRIVING. IT WAS ONCE A MONTH OR SO BUT NOW IT IS EVERY TIME. HAVE TAKEN IT TO AUTO SHOPS AND THEY CAN'T FIND A PROBLEM. I HAVE A 2005 SATURN ION 2 WITH DEFECTIVE POWER STEERING. I WILL TRY NOT TO LET OUT MY FRUSTRATION BUT TO TRY TO MAKE A GOOD POINT ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE, THIS IS THE WORST ISSUE I'D HAVE TO DEAL WITH IN A WHILE. MY CAR'S STEERING KEEPS GOING OUT ON ME, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT WILL COME ON, THEN THE STEERING WILL BE STUCK. I HAVE A 15MONTHS OLD BABY GIRL AND THIS IS THE ONLY CAR I OWN. I WORK PART TIME AND CAN NOT AFFORD ANY EXTRA EXPENSES, I'M STUCK WITH THIS HORRIBLE CAR, HAVE NO WHERE TO FIND HELP. ISSUE STARTED IN 2009. IGNITION SWITCH WOULD NOT START CAR. ONCE CAR WAS RUNNING COULD NOT TURN OFF CAR WITH IGNITION SWITCH ON OFF. KEY WOULD NOT COME OUT OF IGNITION SWITCH. THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD THE SWITCH REPLACED. HAD THE IGNITION SWICH REPLACED 2 MORE TIMES IN THE NEXT 4 YEARS. I AM STILL HAVING AN ISSUE WITH GETTING MY KEY OUT OF THE SWITCH, EVEN AFTER THE LAST RECALL WITH IT BEING REPLACED THE 4TH TIME. *JS
SINCE I PURCHASED MY CAR, IT WILL NOT START IN COLD WEATHER. I HAVE TO WAIT ABOUT 10 MINS, TRY AGAIN AND IT WILL START RIGHT UP. WELL, ABOUT A WEEK AGO IT "SHUT DOWN" WHILE I WAS DRIVING DOWN A BUSY STREET IN MY CITY. AFTER ABOUT 4 HOURS OF IT SITTING, I WENT BACK AND DROVE IT HOME WITH NO PROBLEMS. THEN, A FEW DAYS LATER IT DID THE SAME THING WHILE RETURNING TO WORK FROM A LUNCH BREAK. I HAD TO LEAVE IT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND GOT A RIDE. AFTER WORK, I PICKED IT UP AND WAS ATTEMPTING TO DRIVE IT STRAIGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP. WHILE DRIVING ON I-10 EAST, IT SHUT DOWN AGAIN. ON THE INTERSTATE!!!!! IT WAS RAINING OUTSIDE AND THE PERSON BEHIND ME ALMOST HIT ME. I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW I COASTED TO THE MEDIAN, EXCEPT GOD! MY CAR WOULD NOT DRIVE ANYMORE. I LEFT IT THERE AND GOT A RIDE HOME WITH SOMEONE BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT TO SIT IN THE RAIN ALONE ON THE INTERSTATE. WHEN I WENT BACK AT ABOUT 11:00 PM TO PICK MY CAR UP, IT WOULDN'T START. I WAITED 10 OR SO MINS AND IT STARTED UP. I DROVE IT STRAIGHT TO A FRIENDS HOUSE THAT WAS NEARBY AND LEFT IT THERE. I CONTACTED GM AND THEY ADVISED ME TO BRING IT TO SATURN, WHICH I HAVE DONE MANY TIMES BEFORE, SO I DID. THEY TELL ME THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY CAR. SO, I TOLD THEM TO KEEP IT UNTIL THEY FIGURE IT OUT BECAUSE I WILL NOT PUT MY LIFE IN DANGER AGAIN. I HAVE BEEN GOING BACK AND FORTH WITH GM AND SATURN AND NO ONE WILL TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS. ITS RIDICULOUS THAT THIS CAR IS PUTTING MY LIFE IN DANGER. I REFUSE TO DRIVE IT AGAIN. UNABLE TO TURN KEY IN THE OFF POSITION OF MY 2005 SATURN ION WHILE THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING. HAD TO EVENTUALLY UNHOOK THE BATTERY TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A SERVICE STATION WHERE THEY ENDED UP BREAKING THE KEY TO REMOVE IT FROM THE IGNITION AND THEN REPLACING THE ENTIRE IGNITION LOCK MECHANISM. *TR
ELECTRIC POWER STEERING FAILURE IN 2005 SATURN ION IN LESS THAN 16000 MILES BUT 8 MONTHS OUT OF WARRANTY. POWER STEERING BECAME OPERATIONAL AFTER EACH RESTART, BUT FAILED AGAIN WITHIN 3-5 MINUTES OF DRIVING. VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER POSING A SAFETY HAZARD FOR MY WIFE. DEALER REPAIR REQUIRED REPLACEMENT OF COMPLETE STEERING COLUMN APPROACHING $1000 IN REPAIR COST. IGNITION SWITCH HAS ALSO FAILED TO PERMIT CAR FROM STARTING ON TWO OCCASIONS. DEALER ALSO REPLACED AT THE SAME TIME. DEALER RETURNED BOTH PARTS TO ME. I HAVE LEARNED THAT BOTH ARE COMMON FAILURES WITH THIS CAR AND OTHER GM COMPACTS. SEVERAL INCIDENTS OF REPEATED FAILURES OF THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLS OR REIMBURSEMENT FOR THESE PREMATURE FAILURES. NO WONDER GM IS GOING BUST WITH A PRODUCT OF SUCH LOW RELIABILITY AND POOR DESIGN. *TR

2005 SATURN ION LEVEL 3. IF IT IS BELOW FREEZING OUTSIDE THE CAR WILL NOT START. THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH SATURN IONS. THE CAR WILL NOT START AT FIRST, THEN IF YOU WAIT 20-30 MINUTES IT WILL START. THE ISSUE IS THE IGNITION SWITCH WHICH IS FAULTY. ALSO, THE DEALERSHIP I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM TOLD ME IT HAD A FULL POWERTRAIN AND BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY AND WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN THEY DENIED THAT. *TR
IT WAS ABOUT 25 F AT ABOUT 8 AM VEHICLE WOULD NOT START OR CRANK. THE PASS LOCK LIGHT CAME ON, WHICH WHEN I RESEARCHED SAID THAT I WAS STARTING WITH THE WRONG KEY. UPON MUCH MORE RESEARCH I FOUND THIS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE 2003-2006 ION. AFTER MANY IGNITION SWITCHES WERE REPLACED AND EVEN THE ONBOARD COMPUTER, THE SAME PROBLEM WOULD RECUR. THE BEST SOLUTION I FOUND CAME FROM AN AIRPLANE MECHANIC. BE SURE THE IGNITION IS OFF. HE SAID TO SPRAY LPS ELECTRO CONTACT CLEANER (ANY PURE ALCOHOL CONTACT CLEANER WILL WORK) INTO THE IGNITION. SATURATE IT. WAIT 10 MINUTES FOR IT TO DRY THEN SPRAY SEA FOAM DEEP CREEP PENETRANT AND LUBRICANT INTO IGNITION SWITCH. THIS WORKED FOR 2 YEARS FOR ME. IT HAPPENED AGAIN THIS PAST MARCH OF 2011. I REPEATED THIS PROCESS AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEM SINCE. THIS WORKS BY CLEANING OUT THE OLD STIFF LUBRICANT GM USED DURING MANUFACTURE AND PUTTING IN A LIGHTER LUBRICANT. TOTAL COST FOR BOTH SPRAYS WAS UNDER $20.
1. EVENTS LEADING UP TO FAILURE I WAS GETTING READY TO LEAVE FOR WORK. THE TIME OF DAY WAS 9AM. THE TEMPERATURE HAD BEEN HOVERING AROUND FREEZING ALL NIGHT. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN SINCE THE PREVIOUS DAY AT AROUND 9PM. I UNLOCKED MY VEHICLE USING KEYLESS ENTRY - DRIVER DOOR ONLY. I INSERTED MY KEY IN THE IGNITION, CLOSED THE DOOR, PUSHED THE CLUTCH TO THE FLOOR WHILE FASTENING MY SEATBELT. I THEN TURNED THE KEY TO THE START POSITION. THE ENGINE DID NOT START - THE STARTER DID NOT ENGAGE AT ALL. WHEN I RELEASED THE KEY, THE SECURITY LIGHT (AN AMBER "PADLOCK" ICON) STARTED FLASHING SLOWLY - ONCE PER SECOND. I THEN FOLLOWED THE RESTART PROCEDURE FOR THIS SITUATION ACCORDING TO THE OWNER MANUAL - SIMPLY WAIT UNTIL THE LIGHT STOPS FLASHING, TURN THE KEY TO LOCK, THEN RESTART. TEN MINUTES LATER, THE SECURITY LIGHT STOPPED FLASHING AND REMAINED ILLUMINATED. I THEN TURNED THE KEY TO LOCK, AND THEN RESTARTED ENGINE. 2. THE FAILURE, HOW OFTEN, ITS CONSEQUENCES: THE VEHICLE DID NOT START DUE TO A FAILURE OF, OR A MALFUNCTION OF, SOME COMPONENT OF THE FACTORY VEHICLE SECURITY SYSTEM. IT HAS HAPPENED A TOTAL OF THREE TIMES BETWEEN THE INCIDENT DATE AND MARCH 30, 2009. IT ONLY SEEMS TO OCCUR WHEN THE TEMPERATURE OVERNIGHT HOVERS AROUND FREEZING, OR DROPS BELOW FREEZING. THE CONSEQUENCES OF THIS FAILURE FOR ME HAVE BEEN MINIMAL, BUT I WAS VERY FORTUNATE IN EACH INSTANCE TO BE PARKED IN A SAFE PLACE, WHERE MY PROMPT EGRESS WAS NOT NECESSARY. I AM REPORTING THIS SITUATION TO THE ODI BECAUSE OF THE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF THIS FAILURE OCCURRING DURING NORMAL DRIVING - IF I STALL THE ENGINE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND AM NOT ABLE TO RESTART FOR TEN MINUTES UNTIL THE SECURITY LIGHT STOPS FLASHING, I WOULD BE IN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, AND MY VEHICLE WOULD PRESENT A SIGNIFICANT HAZARD TO OTHER DRIVERS. 3. WHAT WAS DONE TO CORRECT: NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO CORRECT THIS FAILURE, AS MY DEALERSHIP HAS NO CURRENT SOLUTION. *TR

VEHICLE DID NOT START FOR 4 NON-SEQUENTIAL MORNINGS. BATTERY WAS REPLACED BUT CONTINUED HAPPENING. SATURN ION STARTED AND RAN WELL FOR REMAINDER OF DAYS IT REQUIRED A JUMP START. UPON 4TH DAY OF NOT STARTING, MECHANIC SUGGESTED TO CHANGE IGNITION SWITCH. SINCE DONE, CAR HAS NO PROBLEM STARTING. *TR

THE IGNITION KEY GETS STUCK AND WILL NOT COME OUT OF THE CAR. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME AFTER HAVING THE IGNITION SWITCH REPLACED LAST YEAR. I TOOK IT BACK TO SATURN AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED ON THE NEW PART (OF COURSE) AND THEY KEPT IT OVERNIGHT TRYING TO GET IT TO FAIL. THEY GREASED THE KEY AND TOLD ME IT WAS FIXED, DID NOT REPLACE ANYTHING BUT BLAMED IT ON THE KEY WEARING DOWN... *TR
